been reading up on some more aotearoa music history today, specifically the early punk scene. the funniest thing i came away with is that the first two "punk" bands that formed in new zealand did not actually hear a single punk song until about 3-4 months into existing - one guy just read about the '76 sex pistols gig in NME and was like "oh shit. thats gonna be big. let's try to make whatever that would sound like" then walked across town in auckland to pitch this idea to his friends LMAO
"It was mostly social chatter rather than a serious statement of intent, but Brett Salter and Simon Grigg had talked of a jazz band. Neither was musically proficient although Salter played rudimentary saxophone. Little came of this until late 1976 when a mutual friend, the aspiring film director David Blyth, reading the NME at Grigg’s flat, noted a tiny live review of the Sex Pistols and showed Grigg. Deciding that this punk thing had more going for it Grigg immediately went around to Salter’s Ponsonby student flat to do a pitch on “punk” and the stillborn jazz band was henceforth a punk act."
this ended doing something that i find crackup: most of the early NZ punk bands don't sound like The Clash or Sex Pistols or anything, they kinda skip right over that and go straight to weird art-punk bullshit:

Hey!
(This is a promotional post. Scroll if you don't want to see it)
Anyway!
I've had a lot of support over the last year when it's come to building and promoting the disability book archive, largely in the form of people taking the time to share their book recommendations, and one of the largest supporters of the project since its infancy has been a good friend of my mother's.
The Bookish Hermit has routinely suggested books and resources for me to look into while building it. Upon the archive going live in the new year, she even shared it to her own social media where she regularly posts book reviews and read-alongs that she has conducted on her own time.
Recently she even had the opportunity to interview indie author Brett Salter, creator of the Talisman series, and she is looking to do more interviews of a similar nature in the future.
youtube
She has asked if I would kindly repay the favour and give her a little boost here, which I am more than happy to do.
If this doesn't interest you, that is absolutely fine! Thank you for reading this far.
If you do want to go show her some love, tell her Curio sent you (/j) and be kind because I will be watching /lh!👀 [eyes emoji]

Forgotten Lyrics
“Hate in your heart will consume you too”
It gets in your bones, turns everything to ash
Sometimes you can smell it
Burning up the air around you
taking all the breath you have
leaving nothing left of you
nothing you recognize or can comprehend
My core belief has always been
that the reason we’re here is
“To love one another, take care of each other”
I’m not feeling that, and it makes me falter
I have failed and so has she
On so many levels
She is unreachable, unapologetic…
I face the blame alone because she is unwilling to share it.
She wants everything easy and all the attention
But doesn’t want to do any of the learning, giving, growing…
The hard work of maintaining and working through.
Choices were made, some of them bad, all of them hard
I miss my daughter, but I don’t regret the choice to protect what she wouldn’t or couldn’t.
And here we are again, right back where we started…Almost.
With new players, and a remixed lyric with no honor or respect for the layers of history or the concept of truth
Repeating the same mistake and inventing new ones.
I have hit the wall of endurance. I’m done doing backflips and parkours.
“I’m letting go…cause I can’t do this on my own…
Jesus, take the wheel”
You have chosen to build a wall between us
And now you’re putting one between them
This wall cannot stand.
Eventually two men will emerge
And build a bridge
And a river of truth will flow
What will you do then?
“Where are you now…can you hear me?”
~ K. Dylan Spencer

🗡️ The Search for Synergy by Brett Salter
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
The story of two teenagers brought together by design to help save the world from the evil that lurks in The Void. Rome and Julian will vow to join their fledgling powers and become a fighting duo of knight and dragon.
This was a very entertaining middle-grade book! I love the Arthurian-related mythos, the knight and dragon duo, and the writing style. I’m definitely not the main target of this book, as I am an adult, but I feel like lots of people can enjoy it. One of my favorite things was the growing relationship between Rome and Julian, from the beginning of the book to the end.
If you like dragons and fantasy, check it out!

Wʜᴀᴛ'ʀᴇ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʟᴇᴀsᴛ ғᴀᴠᴏʀɪᴛᴇ ɢᴇɴʀᴇs? • The Search For Synergy by Brett Salter                🅑🅞🅞🅚 🅡🅔🅥🅘🅔🅦 First of all, I don't know why this isn't a major #Bookstagram hype! How's that even possible. I'm amazed by how the book was written, everything about it from start to finish. Much thanks to Brett Salter for this wonderful arc copy. It started slowly, a bit of characterization in place. From the first chapter the MC Rome could be understood. Just a regular boy going to a high school in Georgia. But then something keeps bothering him. He becomes restless, and all of a sudden burns his neighbour's yard. With his eyes! Like what?! A fellow schoolmate Julian has seen it all and over the next few days tries to explain to Rome. Apparently he knows the reason Rome is doing all these crazy things. At last, Rome agrees and they visit a sort of Master who tells Rome that he is a special person and has powers. The most shocking thing is that both he and Julian both have to save the world. I was so excited to read this. I love the simplicity of all the characters. It was a fun read too, reading about all the monsters and how #theduo fights them. I love both their characters, Rome a normal boy trying to find answers and the hilarious attitude of Julian. He's a real character. The book gave me major Harry Potter-ish vibes probably because it's a fantasy as well. I however think it'll be nice to read about Rome's parents and friends. There isn't a single dialogue with them in it. I just know he has a family but don't get to read them. Unlike Julian's annoying father who was surprisingly everywhere. I don't even understand how that guy also has sorta powers. He doesn't deserve it. Another character I dislike is definitely that teacher. Somethings off about her especially at the end when said emphasized on "realm". She knows something, I'm 💯 sure. I have a feeling there'll be more of her and also that hooded figure whom I think is still her. Anyway more will be unraveled in the next Installment because YES! There's a book 2! I'm so excited to start reading it. https://www.instagram.com/p/CRzk0UWLMfx/?utm_medium=tumblr
