REUNITE! ── ripped apart.
♯ PAIRINGS - john price x falsely accused reader x 141
♯ SYNOPSIS - tortured for information by your family and the person you loved, john price. you were harmed for something you hadn't even done, you were framed as the traitor and soon they would find out.
♯ TAGS - angst - mentions of torture, panic attacks and breakdowns.
─ previous chapter // masterlist // next chapter ─
Days go by, long fucking days where you're practically stuck in this bed. You could get up and walk around but you didn't want to. You stared at the ceiling, kind of hoping it would fall down on you but it never came. Your face stuck in the same position for hours as you melted into the bare sheets of the hospital bed. A singular tear pricks down your cheek while you look towards the dying flowers that sit on your bedside table.
"Hi honey!" Your nurse walks into your room with some food clumped on the plate. You glance up at her with weak eyes. She places the food on your bedside table. Glancing at the withered flowers, she sighs. "They been in here recently?" Jane asks with a hint of disappointment. Your head shakes, not really wanting to even think about or even talk about them, let alone speak to them. "Listen, I know what they did to you was terrible and you probably never want to open that wound but-"
When you scoff and look away after the 'but', she continues talking. "...You should talk to someone about it. I'm not asking you to talk to them. Because god knows I wouldn't even look at them, but you should see a therapist. You do need one and you can't keep pushing away everyone who wants you to get better." Jane's sweet smile makes you acknowledge that there are nice people in this world.
"I-I uhm- I was forced to go to a session like within the first week of being here but they just..." you trail off, looking towards the flowers that had lost nearly all their life. Huh, you never thought you could relate to flowers.
"I understand, I do." She gently puts her hands on your knee. This time you don't flinch though. This time, memories didn't flash through your eyes - forcing you to relive the horrible things those fucking four put you through. This time, it was peaceful, it was comforting. "You should still give it another go, after what you went through - you need someone safe." Your nurse's thumb rubs against your knee as she speaks.
You take in her words, the lingering feeling of wanting to get better - to heal - stabs at your heart but you also wanted to show those fucking horrible four that this is what they fucking did to you. Not wanting to waste time getting better, if you even could, you knew deep down you'd always hurt. You wouldn't be able to trust anyone again - especially a man. What they did to you tore you apart.
So, you shrugged off your nurse's words before she let you be, to eat your hospital food. The slop slumped onto the plate looked so disgusting. The sandwich that you could tell would stick to the roof of your mouth was unappetizing. Honestly the food there made you less hungry. After sighing and shoving the meal to the bedside table, pushing the dead flowers off the wood so they splattered all over the floor. The hard floor was littered with wilted petals and the dark, pale green stems.
So here you are. Sat in another white fucking room, except there wasn't a lonely bed or flowers scattered across the floor. There were two cream couches and a massive window. And a woman wearing a tight pair of trousers, a white blouse with a blazer swept over the couch she was sitting on top of. The girl was holding a clipboard with text filling the papers. Her hair was straight and was neatly brushed - the total opposite of you. “Ah, y/n? Right? You can call me Jones." she smiled as you came into her viewline. You nod nervously as you swipe down on your little gown the hospital gave you.
Multiple panic attacks. Your body was in pain. The wounds that litter your body - not to be healed ever again. Your 8 fingers that trailed over the stitched up cut across your cheek. The breakdown you had just a week ago. How you flinch when anyone (but Jane) gets close.
All of that flashes through your head while you sit opposite the women. "You're quite famous, you know?” the woman states. You tilt your head towards the left.
“Oh?” you hum, looking around the room, clearly avoiding eye contact. She scribbles something quick onto a clean bit of paper, the one with text flopped over the top of the clipboard. “Heard about your ‘story’ a lot, from a lot of different people.” You slump against the sofa. Feeling the soft fabric beneath your fingertips. “Oh.” mumbling when your eyes finally meet hers for the first time. Her blue eyes connect with yours. A deep passion for helping was buried in her eyes. You could tell.
“I haven't heard the story from the person who went through it all though.” Jones looks down at her clipboard, “why don't you tell me about it? How are you feeling?”
“What's there to tell?" you scoff. Sweat starts pouring from your forehead so you pull an arm that was littered with healing bruises up across it. Your question was not much of a question, more of a statement. What was there to tell? She knew the story, everyone fucking did. “Let's start with how's your day?” Jones smiled with a hint of amusement when your scoff reached her ears. “Fine.” She raised an eyebrow skeptically at your answer but didn't comment on anything. She leaned forward. Placing her clipboard on the seat beside her.
Your figit uncomfortably, "that's.. all? Fine?” Jones questions, her voice hinting at suspicion. “Yep.”
“You know if you aren't honest, I can't help you."
After burying your head into your hands, you drag your cheek down with your palm as you let out a long sigh, "I'm doing better.”
“Well that is good to hear,” she coos, reaching for her clipboard and writing down a few words in the margin. “Has anyone visited you lately?” Her question makes you hesitate for a moment. “Like family and friends?” Jones nods whilst leaning back.
Looking around the office you notice the way the woman in front of you tilts her head in the slightest when you shake your head. Her ramblings go on and on but you end up blurring them out. High squeaking forms in your ears, blinding out your therapist talking.
That's when a loud bang sounds from the door that you entered through. It brings you back to life. You flinch back as the door opens. “Hey Jones, sorry 'm late just got outa trainin’” the blurred man walks through the door, holding tight onto a notebook. His scruffy appearance so familiar.
You wish you didn't have to face him yet.
“Your session is on a Thursday from now on, I told you-” she gets cut off when Johnny drops the book in his hands as he stares at you with wide eyes, his mouth opening slightly as fear shoots through your stomach and heart. The man before you mumbles one quiet word.
“...Bonnie.”

Ponyboy and “Staying Gold.”
Johnny’s last words to Ponyboy are interesting, especially considering everything the audience has learned so far about said words: “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…”
Why does he say that when the only time Pony told him about the poem it was about how that’s not possible? “Nothing gold can stay.” He takes the poem and goes against it.
Furthermore, every other “gold” thing has fallen victim to this rule:
- The sunset the two of them had watched ended, as well as the fact that it was the last one that Johnny ever got to see and enjoy.
- Pony’s mother was golden and then both her and his father passed.
- Mickey Mouse (Sodapop’s horse) was a dark gold and then he was sold and taken from Soda.
- Soda’s eyes were described as gold, and one could say that his breakdown at the end of the book was an ending, but that could be stretch. Another thing is that S. E. Hinton herself said that for Soda’s future, she envisioned him getting drafted in the Vietnam war and dying there, which could also symbolize it.
But Ponyboy stays gold.
Even though he’s noticeably tougher and more rough than before, he hasn’t completely hardened himself the way that Dally had. Even though the Ponyboy at the end of the book would threaten some Socs with a broken glass bottle and make good on it if they didn’t run, he still takes the time to pick up the broken glass off the street so that people don’t get flat tires.
That scene is so important to his character because it shows that despite all of the confusion, the stress, and the mental, physical, and emotional toll, on top of the death of not one but TWO of his closest friends, he still isn’t a bad person.
What separates him from Johnny is that he had people there for him in his time of need. Every Single Time. He had a loving home life with his parents and brothers, and even when his parents were gone, he was still close with his brothers and could rely on them. When he got jumped at the beginning of the book he had the gang —especially Darry and Soda— to save him. He had Johnny when Bob and Randy were trying to kill them. He had Dally to go to when they were trying to run away, as well as to protect him during the church fire, both literally and metaphorically. It was Dally’s hand that physically slapped him to get the smoke out of his lungs and it was Dally’s jacket that prevented him from getting the worst of the flames.
There’s also a fundamental difference between him and the other greasers. One that makes him see the beauty in sunsets —something that not even Johnny cared for until Pony pointed them out to him— and prevented him from using a busted up bottle to fight off the Socs at the beginning of the book. His aversion to fighting and his ability to sympathize with the Socs, even the ones who played a huge hand in this entire mess (Randy).
He’s smart as well, which is another thing. Both Pony and Darry are intelligent and athletic, and had a promising future after school. There are many similarities and parallels between the two, but the reason why even if they had gotten the same exact upbringing they wouldn’t be the same is stated right at the beginning of the book in chapter one. “He doesn’t understand anything that is not plain hard fact. But he uses his head.”
When Two-Bit comments on how Darry would be a Soc if it wasn’t for them, he meant it. What separates Darry and Pony —even though they are already different from your average greaser— is that Darry is a greaser only in name and status. Ponyboy has heart— something that is scorned by Darry, at least at the beginning.
Ponyboy has qualities that make him unique from both Greasers and Socs, and even though he’s young and his perception of things is definitely not completely reliable or accurate, he’s still managed to separate himself from everyone else.
Ponyboy is different, but time and time again he is protected and cared for and loved, and that is what I believe separates him from others and allows him to truly “Stay Gold.”

I was thinking about the first time Jessie and Delia see each other in an emotionally vulnerable place because I enjoy thinking about how the other would just be so gentle and comforting and present and how much it heals them.
I can see Delia explaining a big fear she has or a sensitive memory or possibly just letting Jessie see her breakdown and seek comfort or Delia struggling to ask for help because on the surface she doesn't want to be a bother or burden but deep down its because she hasn't really opened up to anyone and admit that shes just been trying to make everyone happy but now she's burnt out and never stopped since Ashs dad left, just trying to stay strong for Ash so she never actually feels her feelings from his dad leaving.
For Jessie I can see it being about a certain day of the year, either a holiday or just a random date or a specific temperature and weather, just one day every year, and at first she doesn't say anything and tries to joke about it but eventually it leads to explaining something bad happened and later she confesses it was the day her mom left and didnt come home or the last day she talked to her or the day a random TR intern knocked on the door and told her her mom was MIA. Jessie then tries to start making light of it as to not worry Delia but Delia quickly puts her hands on Jessies cheeks and puts her forehead on hers and she just says "I'm so sorry" , cue everyone crying.
Then comfort and tissues and cuddles and jokes and an hour later they are asleep with puffy eyes and smiles.
it's 3am why are you making me cry

acgas season 5 rant
well I must say it’s been some time since I wrote a tumblr essay but I think this one has been building all season. in fact, it will likely be part one of (?) because there are many feelings that need to screamed into the void. let me preface by saying that I am not a “hater” by any means, because I absolutely and unabashedly love this show and it pains me so much to criticise it, instead of celebrate on cloud nine like I usually would be after the finale. I ranked it higher than downton abbey the early seasons, which is a massive compliment for anyone that knows me. and I repeatedly told others not to worry bc it’s the show that keeps on giving and that I trusted these writers implicitly with our beloved characters.
so yes, it royally sucks that I have to eat my words, and that acgas season 5 did not bring what it should have brought. and it also sucks that this is only part one of my rant (for you and me both). if you loved s5, then I am really happy you did, and please don’t read on bc I don’t want to taint your experience. if you hated it but don’t know why, or bc misery loves company, pls read on. spoilers ahead, obv.
1. episode structure
yes so — structure wise, it was a hot mess. I can definitely see what they were going for, in that they gave the limelight to a pair of characters every episode, and thought it would be fine like modern family style episodes. except, another spoiler alert: it was not fine at all, unless your faves are the featured couple for said episode. I would do an episode by episode breakdown but @owlsiehoot already did that. suffice to say, it is not the kind of show where you can enjoy 40 odd minutes when it’s not “your” characters’ turn to shine. they have nearly an ensemble cast, but chose not to treat it like an ensemble show. and while I can see what they were trying to avoid, the chosen execution method was far far worse imo. (we may never know the real reason for this change, but I hate whoever greenlit this decision).
even if they wanted to keep the longer scene structure, fine, maybe it could have worked. but if I could have recommended one change in the writing room, it would have been to split the main cast into threes every episode, instead of pairs. that would resemble the formula a bit more like the prev seasons, and would’ve given much more interesting and diverse back and forths to play off of and keep more general balance. some ways the dynamics could have been done:
Tris & Carmody were fine in ep 4, but keep it in skeldale more and add Mrs Hall into the mix to mother them, even better. (reminding the audience she has a biological son too, and not just these surrogate dumbasses whom she loves would have been a bonus.)
Helen & James are always lovely together, but add Tris in there for some mischief or more Jenny and Heston Grange for some sisterly bonding.
Tris & Siegfried were cute too, but again they were away from the house, and usually Audrey was right in there with them and added something to all their interactions.
Alternatively, give the ladies something to do and put Audrey, Helen and Mrs Pumphrey together again. (I will say though, at least Mrs P had more to do this season).
Where the show suffered most was giving Carmody two stand-out episodes tbh, when in reality, they only had time for one.
2. tone
not only did the previous seasons have an amazing balance of all characters, they also managed to balance the darker story threads with lighthearted humour in an inimitable way. usually three concurrent storylines, two being more serious, and one more lighthearted to break it up. some episodes of course, were more lighthearted than others. but season 5 seems to have turned that on its head because almost all storylines were quite silly?? I respect there has always been a certain amount of physical humour, but it seems now that the gags have now replaced actual plots and meaningful character development. this is not a sitcom after all, unless they’re trying to change genre at the nth hour. notable exceptions include Bingo’s storyline ofc, and Candy & Joan (both which were early in the season btw) and James’ war and brucellosis experience right at the end. the middle was mostly twaddle if you ask me.
which reminds me: overall, the animal storylines seem to have become something of a joke too. the animals used to mean a lot more to their clients before, and the vets used to show them a great deal more love and respect. contrast to this season, many vetting scenes feel almost cavalier. the poor dog with the phantom pregnancy was played for laughs, which I don’t think it would have been in prev seasons. the horse that fell down after the injection, had no greater mystery to solve. Siegfried and Tristan barely seemed to care, and chalked it up to shock. it is quite unforgivable to me, as their great reverence for the animals was one of the things I love(d) about this show.
imo a few subtle changes could have elevated many of the stories to their usual form. I gave an example on discord, but I’ll repeat it here. it’s episode 5, and picture Bosworth coming into Skeldale the same was as he did in canon, asking Audrey to come out to investigate a potential bomb. everything could have remained the same except that Audrey could have told the others where she was off to, and Siegfried or Tristan maybe asked her not to go. the whole family would have gathered together for a moment, expressed their fear for her and she would have said it’s her duty to go and check anyway. in this version, we would have felt the tension and the stakes, and it would be a looming threat of the war finally touching Darrowby. the end would also be the same, a false alarm and nothing more but the emotional impact of the episode would have increased tenfold.
and to me, the worst part of it all is that the season actually started off so promising. the first two/ three episodes, combined with the interviews by the cast, it honestly felt like they were exploring some very interesting things. but they dangled the carrot, only not to deliver imho.
it seemed that Tristan was hiding something painful under his playful exterior, eventually to be teased out, but apparently he really came back from war completely trauma-free.
I was under the impression that Siegfried was supposed to have an identity crisis, where he was feeling left behind, but it didn’t seem to pan out properly either.
Audrey was supposed to be overworked, right? but we didn’t see her actually buckle under the strain of her many, many duties because she’s basically superwoman I guess?
James had this beautiful connection with Banerjee, only for him to be alive but never show up again I guess? really thought James would bring him to Mrs P’s convalescent home but guess not.
3. characters
and here is the crux of it, the beating heart of the show which is now bleeding out. because a truly good show is character-driven, and unfortunately I cannot say that was true for season 5. a glaring deus ex machina comes to mind, when the doorknob fell off in episode 4, trapping Tris and Carmody in a room. never thought the show would stoop to these cliched tropes tbh and it truly disappointed me.
not only did the episode structures do the characters a great disservice, but it seems to have foiled the overall season story arc too for each character throughline. to me, it looked as if the only two people with clear defined story arcs were James with his war trauma, and Carmody (my beloved). was it Sam West who said the characters seemed “busy” this season? bc yes, it’s accurate. but not in a good way. mostly they all had only things to do on the surface, but there was very little going on underneath. which is a crying shame because basically, characters have to suffer a little to grow and be interesting. they need to face challenges and grow and change. let’s do some compare & contrast:
Tristan changed and grew in every season, from 1 to 3 and faced many internal (and external) obstacles to becoming his best self, whether it was by being more studious or responsible and mature in his work and personal life. Now he’s back and we’re supposed to think… what? That he’s already his best self, I suppose.
season 4 Siegfried was holding his found family together, trying to cope with the workload and missing Tristan, worrying about James, terrified that Audrey was going to leave. contrast to s5, and Siegfried is… being adorable with baby Jimmy, and attracted to a goat heiress? if there was something deeper here, please let me know bc I must have missed it.
while last season, Helen was looking forward to starting a family, and then working on keeping her baby healthy and her family (James) intact despite the war. s5 Helen started off strong, struggling with balancing being a mother and big sister to Jenny, but now… she’s what? planting too many strawberries in the victory garden? being a supportive wife to James is important, but it cannot be her only feature.
and last but definitely not least, Audrey in s4 was learning what a life outside her marriage to Robert could truly mean for her, and figuring out for herself where she belongs. conversely, s5has her making jam, and finding non-explosive tinned potatoes. yes she’s a warden, but what is she feeling on the inside?
4. conclusion — an empty vessel
to summarise this not-epic epic is that my true grouse with this season is its utter emptiness. it is truly a season where nothing happened and nobody really changed. okay, some things were different — e.g. Siegfried being better with handling his “boys”, and being more open and less grumbly in general. or Tristan being more responsible with his work, and standing his ground more firmly. but imo those were the results of previous season’s changes. within the course of s5, they did not do much growing or changing.
Tristan’s homecoming episode comes to mind the most. so many missed opportunities for deeper to surface — James being torn between treating a patient and possibly missing his son’s christening would have added some true to character dissonance. Helen leaning on Audrey for support when she had issues with her mother-in-law, could have worked beautifully and explored the character foils in an interesting way. James and Helen asking Siegfried and Audrey to be Jimmy’s godparents would have been truly touching and a testament to how deep their familial bonds are.
anyway, TL;DR I guess? maybe it’s because they’re saving most of the juicy stuff for season 6, but it mostly felt like a filler season, and if you looked forward to it all year just to get that then it’s truly anti-climactic. with all that said now, onwards and outwards. we shall see was the CS brings.

Do you ever get so bitchy from insomnia you start writing a severe mental breakdown
*ahem*
"I'm not the Sabre you know, Light! I'm not him!", "if you want a living memory, look at him! He's got my fucking face!", "you and I both know that if I'm not dead by the end of the day, everyone else will be.", "I was never meant to have any of this, Light. He's fucking taunting me with his memories.", "there's nothing worth saving anymore! I can't go back, Light! This is it, this is what I've become!", "kill me, before what little kindness I have left is drained. Kill me! End my suffering! Let me fucking rest!"
POV TR Sabre gets stuck with TR Shadow in the RQ universe (based on a dream I had where Shadow woke up every day as a different RQ character, like Faceless, but it's once daily. He doesn't know why, and meanwhile, Sabre is uh. Not okay) and fucking hates living
TFC still speaks to him but doesn't answer any of his questions for why he's somehow here, in this place that was never his home. RQ Light and Time eventually become aware of their future/memories (of tfc mostly, they're in the rainbow kingdom here), and they're both people Shadow had turned into. In the dream, Shadow and Sabre had to go look for the original versions of them and wake them up/free them, and then Shadow would start reverting back to himself.

What is your general opinion about TR Netflix show? I saw reviewers complaining about Lara being "whiny" or experiencing PTSD symptoms "way too late".
As someone who strongly identifies with her, having my own share of unworked trauma, I really like her like that.
The first minutes of her with Roth weren’t exactly my favourites because of how it clashes with how we see her in the 2013 game, but I overall loved the show
I know you asked for a general opinion but I feel compelled to share more about it:
Neither in the games nor in the comics she’s had time to work it out, always being on the run and having to focus on the matters at hand, so I think that her finally having a breakdown after three years (and only because part of the source of her original trauma is over, that being Trinity), and because she still doesn’t make time to dwell on it and actually have a good strong cry about it (because she’d rather avoid it), and because afterwards she’s only able to cry for a couple of minutes at a time about what happened in the first game, and about her fear of losing, in her present time, the loved ones she has left, makes sense to me
As someone constantly suppressing my feelings and traumas in order to be able to be there for my loved ones, and because of that when I feel way too much I can’t help but cry, but recovering maybe sometimes way too fast (and so not letting everything out at the moment), I really like that part of her current self because I can identify and I don’t feel too bad about myself for crying too frequently over short periods of time sometimes
#that’s only my opinion#lara croft#tomb raider#lara croft 2013#tomb raider 2013#lara croft tomb raider#tomb raider legend of lara croft#tomb raider netflix#tomb raider animated

A Hero in a City Full of Giants, Part 2
Alright, I've done Shi Association and Blade Lineage, now it's time for Lobotomy Corp and W Corp! These two will probably be relatively brief (they were not), but if you know the context, it won't come as a surprise.
After this will be Don's Middle and N Corp IDs!
Oh, Lobotomy Corp Don. You silly thing, you. I will say, on a completely unrelated note, it's cool to see how abnormalities look without the cognition filter active.
The Walpurgis night IDs feel slightly less "canon" than the others, to me, although that's more of an opinion thing. I'd be happy to explain why if asked.
Anyway, the fact that Don received a Lobotomy Corporation ID instead of one of the Library of Ruina ones is interesting here, as we know this specifically is the Lob Corp facility we play through in the game. So, we get the benefit of knowing a bit more context toward her working situation, although to be perfectly honest, the only thing that actually matters is the knowledge of her assigned abnormality, O-04-84, or Meat Lantern.
For those who don't know, Meat Lantern can be a rather frustrating abnormality to work with. First of all, it doesn't like if a work session with it ends too early, and is a fairly common escapee when shit hits the fan. Now, if it were any other abnormality this would be fairly manageable, it's just a matter of suppressing it and that's that, but Meat Lantern is a special case.
Firstly, you will not be notified that Meat Lantern has breached containment. Secondly, once you do realise, you will notice that it isn't roaming the facility. Instead, it has teleported somewhere in the facility and is waiting with its lantern sprouted out of the ground like a flower. If someone walks over the flower, they are killed instantly. You will need to find it before it kills too many people, or, worse, kills one of your important agents. It is a deceptively lethal abno with the right circumstances.
So why did I take the time to explain all of this? Well, if you were someone who, for example, aspired to be a hero that helped the weak and were given the responsibility of dealing with an abnormality that when left to its own devices can kill dozens of employees without being noticed, you would probably place a lot of importance on making sure it didn't do exactly that.
Lob Corp Don has a different way of seeing things, comparing it more akin to a game of Hide and Seek and punishing it for the "mischief" of killing multiple people by smacking its backside before placing it back in containment.
While, Don has always been an oddball case, this feels... strange to me. The most likely cause of this in my eyes is the armour she's wearing. As we have been shown through a number of different stories in Project Moon's catalogue, wearing E.G.O is not without its side-effects upon one's psyche. Obviously there is also the working conditions, as multiple instances within Lob Corp show that the body count is very high in that place (Lookin at you, Queen of Hatred). The way that it appears to have affected Don's mind is that she appears to have a great deal of affection towards the abnormalities, calling Meat Lantern (which outright eats people) cute and struggling to punish it for, again, eating people.
Suffice it to say, Lobotomy Corporation Don Quixote is no hero, although she has a commendable work ethic at least.
W Corp Don is a prime example of the speed at which The City can and will bring Don to ruin.
If you know how WARP trains work, you know why I don't need to explain much here. If you don't...
WARP trains are a form of near-instantaneous public transit, which is all well and good until you remember how time works when moving at or close to the speed of light. If you are not in first class seating, you will discover a few things.
Firstly, the train does not, in fact reach its destination instantly. Initially, people on the train may think this is the result of some sort of breakdown, and that, once the train is fixed, they will be able to get out at their desired stop soon.
Secondly, you do not need to eat or drink while on the train. This is not immediately apparent to the passengers, but when minutes becomes hours and the train still hasn't reached its destination, this will eventually be noticeable.
Eventually, hours will become days, weeks, then months. People will begin to panic, some may become violent, and if you are unlucky enough to see someone go past the point of no return, you will learn the final, terrible truth of WARP trains.
You cannot die within a WARP train. No matter what happens to you, you will still be conscious. You are forced to experience the full journey, even after a hundred years and you've watched countless people, who were once strangers, but have become life-long friends in the countless years since. Even after three thousand years, when you have long since forgotten your name, language, and what you were when you got onto the train. You will live through it all.
At your destination, a functionally identical reconstruction of you will leave the train at its destination, completely unaware of the eternity they experienced behind them.
This one does not need much explanation, although I will happily point out one very interesting detail about the ID story.
W Corp Don's ID story does not show her Uptie 3 art at all. All we see after her initial ID art is a black screen as it describes that Don's reaction of disgust and horror is the same reaction anyone has upon learning the truth of the trains.
Instead, the Uptie 3 art gives us the aftermath.
It shows us what the revelation has turned Don into.
Do you see a hero here? Because if you ask me, I don't think the word "hero" will appear in W Corp Don's thoughts ever again after this point.

okay. collection of disparate thoughts on the good hal/bad hal thing:
-> I get, mechanically, why they went for it as a creative decision. I can buy the hal we see in the cutler flashbacks and the hal we see in the present day as being the same person because they're separated by sixty years, people change with time, but clearly what they wanted was for hal to go full villain mode in the last episode, and simply making him have a breakdown and do a heel turn on his personality wouldn't make sense. and like, last episode evil!hal is really fun, he's a smug villain who does dance numbers and is blunt enough to deliver the show's thesis as parting wisdom, I see the reasoning.
-> but I'm not sure how much of that was planned from hal's introduction? he says things like "I've been so many people" and "you've got the wrong man, I'm not him anymore," but it always reads as more metaphorical until s5. hal always says "me" when referring to his Evil Self, up until the middle of s5 where he starts saying "him."
-> and because (in my opinion) this element was added for a mechanical function, it overwrites thematic ground we've already covered before. when george split his monstrosity off from himself and called the wolf "it," that was a problem he had to overcome; when mitchell tried to deny his own agency and say he wasn't in control when he hurt people, that was a flaw that got corrected. then in hal's case they flip the script and say it really isn't him who does the atrocities. they try to work around it a bit, having good!hal kill someone and feed in secret so he does have things he's responsible for that lead into the change, but it still feels weird.
-> I also get where this comes from, metaphorically. there is a trend in sci fi/fantasy of portraying addict characters with this sort of jekyll-and-hyde dualism, literalizing internal struggles and the way people change while under the influence of mood altering substances, you find shades of it as far back as medieval morality plays where an everyman's vices and virtues manifest into physical form to duke it out. I don't love it, but I see where the emotional core of it comes from, and I also think it works best when (like with jekyll and hyde) the story comes to the conclusion that the two aspects aren't ultimately different people, and that's not really what they do with hal. unless...
-> how different are good hal and bad hal, anyway? obviously their moral codes are different, but are they different people or two aspects of the same person? bad hal isn't a neat freak, but he shares good hal's passion for vintage showtunes and werewolves who visibly want to do him harm. he's genuinely distraught when lady catherine dies, he keeps up appearances with lady mary for 250 years, young leo gets right under his skin, and he was willing to let let tom and alex have a nice send off from him. and, as should probably go without saying, good hal can also be a bastard, too. he almost attacks people several times, he says awful things to tom, he recruits ian and hides it, he kills larry and hides it, he feeds and hides it even when directly asked, etc. if the show had had one more season, I think the obvious next step for this arc would be bad hal joining the gang and everyone realizing that he's still just hal. this isn't a stranger, their friend hasn't died, this is the same man they've been living with for months and he still thinks the lute is the coolest of all medieval stringed instruments. the only real difference is that now he's decided to stop trying, but he's perfectly capable of changing his mind back.
-> what actually is his deal? what, specifically, is the good hal/bad hal thing? other vampires don't do that, other old ones aren't like that, the closest another character comes is herrick's whole amnesia arc but that was because he came back from the dead. I've seen other people go through and track how hal does actually show a good number of symptoms of a dissociative disorder (traumatic early childhood, out-of-body experiences, some amount of amnesia, etc.), but given that he says he feels like "both" and "neither" of himself when the devil tricks them all into thinking they've been un-cursed, I think we're supposed to read it as something supernatural. the best headcanon I've got is it is a dissociative disorder but hal thinks it's supernatural so the devil took it away as part of the whole too-good-to-be-true thing, but I don't think that was the intention and the show leaves it super unclear, they just drop it in and expect us to roll with it.
#I think five seasons was as long as this show needed to be but I do kinda wish they'd gotten like. a last ninety minute wrap up special.#there are just enough unfinished threads in the second trio's arcs that I want to reach through the screen and tie them up myself#the bad hal stuff as mentioned above#the gang processing their absolute mess of miscommunication that went so badly that it summoned The Devil From The Bible#tom's 'I've killed loads of vampires. it don't change ya.' from the penultimate episode really feels like it needs to be addressed#as a parallel backslide from the ideal of humanity#alex's unfinished business. ik the webseries had her deciding it must be to defeat the devil#but that wasn't in the main show and it's still left hanging from the last we see.#let me go back in time and petition the bbc for a wrap up special or a half-season. I could pitch them my musical episode.#being human#marina marvels at life

So it goes without saying this is basically TR but good. But the one weakness I think it has rn is creating opponents. I know we’re fresh off the Shishtoren arc and there’s only a couple episodes left, so I’m not too mad about the weak antagonists picking on the girl and using that to introduce Kiryu/get Sakura in the group chat etc. but I hope when we get a second season that the opponents have better writing. Even Choji was a little meh on the writing side with no real meaning behind his breakdown.
But in fairness, it was a nice episode and it’s good to see some more light hearted stuff after the emotional roller coaster that was the Shishtoren arc. Sakura might be the biggest tsundere this season. My boy went from basically no contacts in his phone to a phone full of friends and a group chat. Trying to be so tuff and still blushing at everyone lol
Uh oh class election coming up.. this’ll be fun

Takemichi and Chifuyu Friendship Headcanons
Just wanted to share some hcs for my favourite tr duo <33
In the Bonten timeline (ignoring the Bonten part), after Takemichi time leaped back into the future, Chifuyu made sure to record everything that happens in the past through video recordings, photos and diary entries (for things he couldn’t record). Since Takemichi would end up skipping twelve years of his life, he didn’t want him to miss out on all the good things that happened in the past because of him
He also made extra sure to record his proposal to Hina (assuming it was the past Takemichi who proposed), and made multiple copies to keep it safe for him when he returns (Takemichi cried when he found out)
During high school a lot of people would approach Takemichi to ask him to pass on their confessions to Chifuyu because he was the one closest to him. He would at times get overwhelmed with the amount of confessions (I imagine Chifuyu being really popular in high school), but would always make sure each one of them reached him because he was hoping Chifuyu would find someone he can be happy with
The first time it happened they both spent considerable amount of time freaking out over how to reject a confession (in the end they asked Mitsuya for help)
They both share the same brain cells when it comes to Shoujo manga. They would be the kind to have a breakdown together over a couple holding hands for the first time and won’t stop screaming and will get yelled at by the people around them
They would also always end up rooting for the same guy in case of love triangles but for different reasons
Chifuyu invites Takemichi to his house often to hang out and he’s always polite when he comes over so Chifuyu’s mom likes him because he’s the most “normal” friend he has (she doesn’t know he’s one of the captains of the biggest gang in the country)
Basically for Chifuyu, Takemichi is that one friend your mom tells you to be like
Takemichi noticed that Chifuyu gets happier receiving gifts that are for Peke j than receiving gifts for himself so for his birthday he would always get him gifts for Peke j (usually toys) along with getting a gift for him
Chifuyu is the biggest TakeHina shipper (along with Emma of course)
Chifuyu puts tomato ketchup on the most random things before eating and somehow it rubbed off on Takemichi as well, so now they are banned from eating out with the gang if they don’t stop doing that
Chifuyu once tried to take Takemichi to shop for better clothes but Takemichi kept picking up weirdest clothes that Chifuyu gave up and went home
In the final timeline, along with Mikey, Chifuyu is the only person who knows about time leaping because Takemichi wanted him to know even if he couldn’t remember the previous time lines
