I recently found an old movie called House 2: The Second Story. The villain of which is named Slim Reeser and he bares a striking resemblance to Tex Hex from Filmationā€™s Bravestarr, which was of the same vintage, late eighties-early nineties.
Soooooā€¦ā€¦. Whereā€™s our live action scifi/horror/western Hollywood? šŸ˜

REDESIGNING MIRAGE
Thatā€™s no mirage youā€™re seeing, thatā€™s our group taking on Dani Moonstar, aka Mirage! One of the New Mutants from the 80s book, Dani has long been that teamā€™s leader and served in different leadership roles. Sheā€™s most notable for being one of the X-Menā€™s most prominent Native American characters. Her identity is so central to her character, she refused to wear the standard New Mutants training uniform without adding pieces from her Cheyanne heritage.
Our team considered both Daniā€™s unique power - the ability to manifest someoneā€™s greatest hopes or fears into realistic illusions - and her Indigenous background when redesigning her. Taking on a character so strongly rooted in such a specific - and non-White - culture meant approaching the design with respect, and of course always with an eye towards an exciting design!
Give all our talented artists a follow on social media!
Rake | @/pastelrake
Tumblr media
"For Dani I drew on two prominent western themed pieces of media from my childhood. Firstly my father's favourite John Wayne film;Ā  1965's The Sons of Katie Elder and secondly, the 1987 ridiculous children's cartoon BraveStarr. Both of these properties, whilst flawed, gave me a love of Americana/ Wild-Western aesthetics. With this in mind, I wanted to create a vintage-style western movie poster that centred Dani as the protagonist. In particular, I imagined her in the recognizable role of Sheriff, given her established characterization as a protector."
SSTArtwork | @/sstartwork
Tumblr media
"I did two looks for Dani, one is more of a practical field uniform, with padded armour sections and oversized gloves. I've added an extra skill to her power set, as well as creating arrows and bows, she can now create a psychic vulture, which I envision swooping onto an enemy and ripping at the fears and drawing them out, or the desires, to varying effects. The second look is more Valkyrie based, with more opulent armour and headpieces harkening back to her initial days as a Valkyrie. In this state, all her powers are boosted and her bird becomes much larger, around about the size of a very large condor. She can use the bird as an aid in battle, for gliding, shields etc etc."
Alex Buckland | @/blueromanticss
Tumblr media
"Dani's culture has always been really important to her so I tried my best to incorporateĀ that into my design!Ā "
Thwwip Stickers | @/Thwwip_Stickers
Tumblr media
Dani is one of my top two most fave New Mutants and a character Iā€™ve always loved in the comics my entire time as an X-Men reader ( since I was 6ā€¦Iā€™m old lol)
"I had two Goals with this redesign.
I wanted to move Dani into a cyberpunk futurism feelā€¦as I feel like itā€™s time for all the X-Men to be ushered into the age of CyberPunk.
I really wanted to grow Dani up. My goal wasnā€™t to do an entire redesign from the ground up, but rather take what sheā€™s had and mature her. Dani, as well as most of the New Mutants, have a tendency to to revert or be written like teens again and it was high time that we start viewing Dani as the strong, mature, dynamic member of the X-Men she truly is.
I wanted to use style lines and shapes that evoked Indigenous Futurism without (seeing as I am not indigenous) just covering her in a bunch of patterns and regalia that might not be appropriate for Dani as a member of the Cheyenne Tribe. I wanted to really make her seem like a hunter while still honoring her indigenous and mutant roots."

Guys I think should be in MOTU: Origins
My love of MOTU Origins is not very hidden, and they've hit tons of great points, but there's so much further to go. So, here's my rundown of what I'd want to see joint the MOTU Origins lineup.
Section 1: Give it the Sun-Man Treatment.
Blackstar
Tumblr media
The proto-He-Man of yore, Blackstar as an IP is probably well within the price range for Mattel to sweep up to sprinkle into the line the same way Sun Man's universe was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For advantages, it's VERY aesthetically compatible and has several strong character designs. It's no more obscure than Sun-Man, and I want hordes of those imp-demons, damnit.
BraveStarr
Tumblr media
Again, a no-brainer. Find the character rights holders, get the rights. New Texas is out there in space, use it as an excuse to do MOTU:Origins versions of the New Adventures designs ("space travel" He-Man) and Rio-Blast. If they already own all the rights then them not having already done this is toyetic malpractice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Advantages are obvious. BraveStarr rocks. You have a POC lead hero, Tex-Frickin'-Hex, and Thirty-Thirty, who would be well worth the extra tooling to make a deluxe figure of (you can always do an upgraded Stridor repaint). You would scatter them through waves to keep from overloading with the Space Cowboy thing, but def a winner.
Also, Rio-Blast. Rio-Blast, Yo.
Tumblr media
Skeleton Warriors
Tumblr media
It was never strong enough to stand on its own. Give Skeletor some friends. 'Nuff Said.
One-Off Guest Stars
This section is a little different, as these wouldn't be permanent integrations, but more fun crossover one-offs rather than being a whole theme. Characters pulled from other Mattel-owned lines of the past:
Mojo Ken and Thunderpunch Barb-E
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the thing. This line is dead stupid, and should remain that way. Give Ken two heads (one 'bad' Mojo head and one 80s toy Ken style one) give Barbie weirdly plausible MOTU gear, the joke alone is worth the parts reuse. Best if nestled in with some Princess of Power characters.
Lets give Captain Power a hand, folks.
Tumblr media
Its that live action TV show that interacted with the vehicles that landed in the uncanny valley between family TV and advert-traintment that never quite works!
Captain Power and Lord Dread are pretty much the only ones you'd want to hit, maybe the Soaron Sky Sentry. And really, they're not that hard to do. Captain Power could easily be made with Roboto legs and upper arms, any number of gloved hands, a new chest armor and a new head.
Any newly tooled pieces would be useful in MOTU movie and new adventure characters.
Tumblr media
The Construx Alien demands your respect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know it makes no sense, I don't care, it's my list. He's amazing and needs to be big and buff with a weird hand.
Major Matt Mason has nothing better to do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This set's a stretch, as it would require a chunk of new tooling, but again, maybe worth it for the New Adventures and She-Ra applications, plus hey, Astronaut prequel Biff Bestman, Evelyn Powers, and Captain Marlena parts!
He-Man's space-man friend is a role that could still be filled.
Next Up... Crossover Potential.

Protector of Peace, Mystic Man From Afar, Champion of Justice: Marshall Bravestarr! Filmation's still-stellar character schematic for the titular hero from "Bravestarr." This was an excellent series that due to extrinsic circumstances didn't find its footing in the competive Saturday Morning Cartoon lineup of the '80s. It boldly featured a Native American as its leading man, introduced in a feature-length movie that I can remember seeing. His chiseled design with the form-fitting uniform was very, um, stirring to me even then. There were other series that featured fusions of the Sci-Fi and Western genres at the time, but they hailed from Japan, "Bravestarr" having a certain uniquely American quality to it, very much like the classic Western films and TV series that it drew on. Storylines had the hero turning to both modern technology and ancient mysticism in order to police a planet threatened by malefic outlaws. The show had some key strikes against it, though. The audience that had grown up with the big hit Saturday Morning 'Toons was just starting to age out of the show's target demographic at the time. Critically, Mattel botched the timing of the accompanying toy line -- again, the significance of a Native American hero can't be understated, toy companies often balking at producing non-white and even female characters because their salability was in doubt -- by releasing the action figures too early in advance of the pilot film and series, hurting its recognition. "Bravestarr" would sadly prove to be Filmation's swang song. I don't imagine that I'm the only one hoping for a contemporary relaunch of the action figure line.

I'm starting to watch the Bravestarr origin movie. I adore the robotic undertaker who keeps sizing people up for coffins.
Badass: the Shaman protects his failing spaceship by fusing it with asteroids and it becomes Star Peak when it crashes and joins with the land.
Eyebrow raised: I get a better look at his people's spaceships and they're totem poles with metal teepees at the base. Not saying it's wrong, but this is indicative of the line they were trying to navigate in the late 80s-- trying to do rad things in a spirit of First People Futurism aimed at eight-year-olds but having so so many pits of stereotype they could easily fall in.
I will continue these observations tomorrow. For, you know, the attentive audience of Tumblr users searching the Bravestarr tag because that's such a prevalent fandom in 2024.

Note
Pity nobody ever wants to Reboot Bravestarr because the whole concept is awesome. Badass Native American Sheriff fighting a Zombie Prospecter outlaw with his Cyborg horse? Stuff practically writes itself & you wouldn't even need to go "Hollywood Progressive" for it. (Or maybe they would. Ugh.
one - I think a BraveStarr reboot would be awesome. There's nothing about space western I don't like.
two - I'm not wild about the term 'Hollywood progressive.' Shows and movies that make more of a concerted effort to include a broader diversity in their casts and creative teams are not necessarily politically progressive, but rather just making adjustments so that their products are more reflective of the real world.
While I consider myself and my attitudes to be very much politically progressive... I'm not about reducing real life people into political statements. That would be the ultimate in objectification and no better than standard fare bigotry.

Heathers AU 80ā€™s Pop Culture Interests
Veronica: Loves classical literature, John Hughs movies, and Disney movies. Enjoys an occasional fantasy film like The Princess Bride, Willow and Legend (the Tom Cruise movie where Tim Curry plays the devil btw). can usually be found B Dalton Booksellers at the Sherwood Mall pouring through its collection on the weekend. Developed an interest in Transformers from her friendship with Dan.
Martha: Particularly enjoys cute things. A huge movie fan and a bit of film snob, she loves Princess Bride above all else. Likes Jim Henson projects, Disney, My Little Pony, She-Ra, Peanuts, ALF, Garfield, Heathcliff, and sitcoms like Punky Brewster, Saved By The Bell and Mamaā€™s Family.
Dan: Wears his interests proudly. Transformers, ALF and Disney Ducks, specifically DuckTales, are his top interests. Likes sci-fi and fantasy movies like The Last Starfighter, Wizards, Dragonslayer, The Dark Crystal, The Flight of Dragons, They Live, Enemy Mine, and The Transformers: The Movie. Famously he was the only one in his friend group back in Hawkins, NOT traumatized by the death of Optimus Prime. Can usually be found at Waldenbooks, KB Toys, Hills and Ames looking for books and Transformers. Likes sitcoms like Family Matters, Doogie Howser and Growing Pains.
JD: Likes chaos and dinosaurs, especially when the two go together. Dabbles in classic literature, and likes Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde in particular. His favorite non Slushee thing is the trading card series Dinosaurs Attack!. Likes The Transformers, with his favorite teams being the Dinobots and Terrorcons. He also likes Soundwaveā€™s two dinosaur cassettes Overkill and Slugfest. Enjoys westerns, schlocky monster/Kaiju movies, RoboCop, the Mad Max series, Escape From New York, The Terminator, Hellraiser, Critters, The Dark Crystal (mostly because of how gnarly the Skeksis look), The Secret of NIHM, Rock & Rule, and shooting games like Operation Wolf and Duck Hunt. Also enjoys crime shows like Wiseguy and Hunter.
Red Heather: Enjoys romance and mystery movies like Cocktail, Dirty Dancing, Body Double, The Bedroom Window and Vision Quest. Looks down on those who still watch cartoons at their age like Dan and Specs, despite she herself liking a good Bugs Bunny cartoon once and awhile. Enjoys teen gossip magazines like Teen Beat, ā€˜Teen, and Super Teen, but doesnā€™t read much otherwise.
Green Heather: A closet Muppets, Indiana Jones and Star Wars fan. Particularly likes the Ewok spin off movies, but desperately tries to hide this from the other Heathers. Absolutely hates romance movies like Canā€™t Buy Me Love, and chafes when Red Heather forces her to watch them for movie night. Has a thing for musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express and Cats.
Gold Heather: Despite her sweet demeanor and appearance, she LOVES horror and slasher movies like Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Childā€™s Play, Army of Darkness, Creepers, and Fright Night. The bloodier and more chaotic, the better. Red and Green are too disturbed to really judge or comment and just let Gold enjoy herself. She also dabbles in anime because of Specs, owning a Doraemon keychain he gifted her clipped to her purse. When asked by others, she denies knowing what it is and just found it cute in a crude attempt to protect her reputation.
Specs: HUGE Star Wars fan. Had he survived, he would also be a fan of the Prequels and Sequels, mostly happy thereā€™s more movies to enjoy and analyze, despite agreeing the sequels arenā€™t that great. Big anime fan, enjoying stuff like Space Adventure Cobra, Demon City Shinjuku, Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX, Doraemon, Saint Seiya, Space Warrior Baldos, Robot Carnival, Giant Gorg, Ronin Warriors and Sherlock Hound, but particularly loves Tatsunoko Productions like the various Time Bokan series and Tekkaman.
Kurt: Enjoys stuff like Conan the Barbarian, TMNT, He-Man, Thundercats, Thundarr the Barbarian, Blackstar and Bravestarr, but hides it initially. He-Man is his jam, and is both his ā€œgay awakeningā€ and the reason he started working out and getting into sports. Once admitted to Dan that Prince Adam/He-Man is his idol and who he strived to be, but failed and instead became an Evil Warrior like Two-Bad (in conjunction with Ram). Likes to collect He-Man toys but is often in a disguise when going to places like KB Toys to find them. Similarly likes collecting He-Man and TMNT comics but tries to hide them In between workout and swimsuit magazines. Also reads the gay model magazine Stud Puppy, but isnā€™t as good at hiding itā€¦ Actually got to model for Stud Puppy in his early twenties as part of a personal milestone.
Ram: A big TMNT fan, especially the movies and video games, but initially hides it. Is actually a pretty big gamer when heā€™s not playing football, and frequents the arcades to play the games albeit in disguise. An expert BurgerTime, Pole Position, Contra, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong player, and is very fond of Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Isnā€™t particularly great at sports games like ExciteBike and Track & Field ironically. A casual fan of Star Wars, and unsurprisingly his favorite part of Return of the Jedi is the slave Leia stuff. Enjoys testosterone charged movies like Top Gun, The Running Man, Commando, Bloodsport, Big Trouble in Little China and The Warriors.
Betty: Similar tastes to Veronica and Martha. Seems particularly into Care Bears, ironic given her cruelty later on. Likes sitcoms like Family Ties, The Golden Girls and Nightcourt.
Jamie: Shares Dan, Kurt, Ram and Specā€™s interests. Big Dungeons & Dragons kid and loves the cartoon. Big movie guy like Martha. Enjoys stuff like V, Quantum Leap, TerraHawks, Poltergeist, Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator.
Thrash: Shares Ramā€™s interest in testosterone based movies. Big Arnold Schwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone fan.
Throttle: Like Veronica, he is a bit of a bibliophile, and enjoys classic literature. Likes Steven King and the Dune series in particular.

Very much agreed but I would also hear a case for:
Tumblr media
- The Rooster (Alan-A-Dale) in Disneyā€™s Robbin Hood (if weā€™re figuring his childhood predates the 90s.)
Tumblr media
- Maleficent from Disneyā€™s Sleeping Beauty (Same.)
Tumblr media
- Scar from the Lion King (If itā€™s a Disney movie from the 90s.Ā  Also you know he would have been one of those insufferable TLK RPers who keeps spelling ā€˜rogueā€™ as ā€˜rougeā€™.)
Tumblr media
- The evil penguin with the teeth (Drake) from the Pebble and the Penguin (If he grew up on weird direct to VHS movies/under-performing mainstream movies from the 90s.Ā  And just Don-Bluth teeth-licking villains in general.)
Tumblr media
- Shere Kahn but specifically from Talespin (if he watched the Disney afternoon cartoon bracket in the 80s/90s.)
Tumblr media
- American Werewolf in London in general.
Tumblr media
- Dragonheart in general.
Tumblr media
- The Horse (Thirty/Thirty) from Bravestarr (if he grew up in the 80s.)
I would also hear a case from something just insane like Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, Ducktales, Loony Tunes, Gargoyles, Godzilla, etc.
Tumblr media
Or if heā€™s like, actually his same age or a little older as of like, this year - that he just picked up one of the OG Furry room party fliers (the thing that pre-dates furry cons) at some point and just decided he was down to clown.
I feel like Lucioā€™s doorway to being a furry would have been Steele from Balto

BraveStarr The Movie (1987)
Film review #358
SYNOPSIS: On the colony planet of New Texas, the evil demon Stampede and his henchman Tex Hex have assembled a gang of outlaws and villains to take control of the planetā€™s rich supply of the valuable mineral kerium. The inhabitants request help from the Galactic Marshals, the peacekeepers of the galaxy, but are less than impressed when only a single Marshal named BraveStarr and a new judge arrive, the residents are less than impressed, and BraveStarr must prove himself by defeating Tex Hex and also fulfilling his destiny...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: BraveStarr the Movie (also known as BraveStarr the Legend) is a 1987 sci-fi animated film. The film is an extension of the BraveStarr cartoon series, but tells the origin of all the characters and how they met. The story begins with a Shaman telling the story of an evil creature known as Stampede and his plans to conquer the galaxy by mining the mineral Kerium, which is essential to space travel, on the planet of New Texas. He enslaves a rogue space mercenary called Tex Hex and grants him new powers to terrorise the planet. The shaman is unable to defeat Stampede, and when his ship is about to crash land on New Texas, he sends his young protege out in an escape pod with the promise that they will meet again and fulfil their destiny to banish Stampede. The way the story is told as a narration does go on a bit too long, and prevents the viewer from getting fully immersed in the story when itā€™s just being told to them rather than it playing out as it happens. This happens again about a third of the way through, and it just feels like the film takes a while to get into the action. It does take its time to establish the backstory, since the purpose of this film is intended to explain the origins of the characters and settings of the cartoon series, but even then the specific details are a little vague. Maybe the cartoon series fills in some of the gaps, but having never watched it, I cannot judged. When the film eventually does get going, itā€™s entertaining enough for kids, with plenty of action, colourful characters and a unique setting to enjoy. Nevertheless, it does try to push the envelope a little, and it feels a little darker and more menacing than other cartoons of the time, being set on this hostile world plagued with nasty looking villains who create a genuine sense of terror.
The titular character BraveStarr is an interesting character in terms of his design: he is a native american who is also a cowboy (space cowboy anyway...). The two roles are often placed in opposition, so itā€™s interesting to see a synthesis of these two tropes, and especially seeing a native American character in the lead role was practically unheard of (and is still quite rare). I think as a character that synthesises the two roles it allows children to see the role of native Americans as the heroes for a change. Whether he is an accurate or authentic depiction of native Americans is perhaps a more nuanced discussion, but honestly, as a kidā€™s show, itā€™s a good opportunity to introduce children to a more diverse set of heroes. The rest of the characters are also a varied bunch, with the main villain Stampede being a gruesome bull/skeleton hybrid, his henchman Tex Hex being a more typical cowboy villain, and a whole host of varied villains with different powers. Thirty-Thirty, BraveStarrā€™s part horse, part sidekick/partner is an interesting dual role character too, and his short temper and cavalier attitude give him some fun action sequences as well as some funny dialogue. Judge J.B. as the only female character also has a strong personality and exerts just as much authority as BraveStarr most of the time, as well as occasionally putting him in his place. then you have the native inhabitants of New Texas, a race of mole-people including Fuzz, who serve as the cutesy mascot characters. It all adds up to a large cast with some interesting and original characters for children to imagine in all sorts of adventures. Letā€™s be honest though, such a large cast is primarily aimed at selling lots of toys of all of these characters (the toys actually released before the cartoon so you can see where the priorities were).
The animation for BraveStarr isnā€™t especially great, but itā€™s okay for itā€™s time, and is consistent with the other cartoons that Filmation put out (He-Man, G.I. Joe etc.). The music however is pretty good, with an orchestral, epic feel that heightens the tension and the stakes. BraveStarr overall doesnā€™t stand out too much from the cartoons made to push merchandise that were rife in the 1980ā€²s, but if you look a little deeper, you find an interesting and unique world populated with some similarly interesting characters, including the titular character. As a standalone film it is a fairly standard depiction of good vs evil, using the cowboy tropes and giving them a sci-fi twist. As a kidā€™s film it doesnā€™t really need to be much more than that. Some scenes (particularly the narrated ones) go on for too long and may not sustain younger viewers attention, but thereā€™s also plenty of action and variety in the characters to rescue it. You donā€™t have to have watched the series to maker sense of the film (as I havenā€™t), but undoubtedly learning the origins of these characters would make it more rewarding. I donā€™t think films like this need to be anymore complicated than what is done here: theyā€™re designed to sell toys, and this essentially provides a springboard for childrenā€™s imagination to make their own stories to play with said toys, so in this sense I can happily accept BraveStarr the Movie as it is, despite some flaws and a lack of appeal and originality for more mature audiences.
