This will be a collection of characters that I, the Mod, really enjoyed. I left Ella of Frell (Ella Enchanted) off the list due to the fact that she is in the finals and I thought it wouldn't be fair to put her against the rest of these characters, many of which lost early on.

Vasilisa the Beautiful:

Okay I loved this story so much when I was in middle and high school. Like a lot of people I knew I had a "Russian" phase where I became briefly obsessed with Russian history and mythology between the ages of 13 and 16. Vasilisa the Beautiful was by far my favorite "Cinderella variant" (though it feels weird to have called a lot of these fairytales regional variants throughout the tournament, I didn't know what else to call them) and as a teenager I read a few YA books that functioned as Vasilisa retellings. But none of them are as good as the original tale. It's such a banger and you should read it if you haven't already!

Eun Ha Won:

I don't have much to say about this one. Someone I knew really liked it so I put it on here in honor of her. Seems cute tho.

Yasmin as Cinderella:

I said this for the Mod's poll for Red Riding Hood, but as a child when visiting Pakistan I watched this movie HUNDREDS OF TIMES on a bootleg DVD, so many times that I think I wrecked the DVD. A childhood favorite!

Cinderella / Prinzessin:

As some of you know due to the fact that I am the mod of @yugipoll, I am a Yu-Gi-Oh fan! Watched it as a kid, somehow still am rewatching it to this very day. And she was such a great card! I loved her so much and she's so cute and pretty!!! I also like the arc that she's in, the KC Grand Championship is easily the best filler arc and I really like Ziegfried and Leon. Where are my Yu-Gi-Oh fans?

Mary Santiago:

Not only is this one of my favorite teen comedies, but it's still one of my favorite movies even now. I have no idea why! Like I cannot tell you why I am so fond of this movie! Maybe it's because of the childhood nostalgia! Maybe it's because of Selena Gomez (extension of childhood nostalgia)! Maybe it's the fact I am fond of the late 2000s. But it's so good! Tell Me Something I Don't Know is one of the bops of all time!!!!

Harper Finkle as "Harperella":

Extension of the last one, but I have a lot of Selena Gomez nostalgia because of how much I loved Wizards of Waverly Place. She's not a big part of this episode, but I love and am nostalgic for Jennifer Stone as Harper just as much. I don't know why this episode stuck in my head so much, when it's one of the very last episodes of the entire show, but I feel like when I think of Cinderella retellings in a non-fairytale show, this is what I think of. The fact that there's a magic book that when you read it you have to play the story and that some of the pages ripped out and got mixed up... I really liked that!

Marauders era's girls x girl childhood

Lily - Strawberry Shortcake girl first, human second, collected greeting cards and watched the cartoon religiously. Loves Barbie, had few dolls and watched every movie with Petunia, her favorite ones are Magic of Pegasus and Princess Charm School. Watched Winx, her favorite was Bloom. Favorite Disney Princesses are Belle and Cinderella, Twilight is her favorite out of Mane6 from MLP. One of 10 people on the planet that read Star Darlings.

Marlene - Polly Pocket girl, had a dozen of those tiny boxes. Adores Monster High, got atleast 2 dolls for every birthday, seen every movie. Watched og He-man and She-ra with her brothers and was super hype once the reboot came out. Made James and Peter watch Barbie movies and W.I.T.C.H., they made her watch TMNT and Transformers. Her favorite Barbie movies are Mermaid Tale and Diamond Castle, favorite pony is Rainbow Dash and favorite Disney Princesses are Mulan and Merida

Mary - dances ballet since she was 10, watched Angelina Ballerina almost every day and read as many Angelina books as she could. Collected LPS since she was 6, has two shelfs in her room just for the figurines. Favorite Barbie movie is Nutcracker and Swan Lake, mostly because of the real ballet dances in those movies. Her favorite Disney Princesses are Tiana and Rapunzel and Rarity is her favorite pony. Elle Woods and Cher Horowitz are her heroes

Dorcas - she is Tiana and Tiana is she, she owns colour green, as a kid definitly tried to kiss a frog atleast once and she and Pandora dressed up as Tiana and Lottie for Halloween 2 years in a row. Adored My scene, had many dolls, watched all movies and cartoon episodes and played all of the flash games. Also watched Winx and listened to Winx's albums so often I started to drive her family insine. Was also obsessed with PowerPuff Girls. Watches Sofia the First and Elena of Avalor with her younger sister. Mariposa duology are her favorite Barbie movies, Applejack is her favorite pony

Pandora - W.I.T.C.H. girl, collected comics as they were coming out, still has a box with accessories that came with each issue, rewatched the whole show every year, probably forced Regulus watch with her. Watched all of Disney Fairies movies and read all of the books, forever mad that Rani was not in the movies. Fairytopia trilogy stan, had a Bibble plushie. Pinkie Pie is her favorite pony and Aurora and Ariel are her favorite Disney Princesses. Watches Enchanted atleast 3 time per year

Sybill - One of 5 people that remembers Bratzillaz, but never really got into a Bratz. She just really likes a cartoon where a main character is a seer. She also likes Barbie, Rapunzel is her favorite. Religiously watched Addams family cartoon and Laika's movie. Had all 3 MLP G3 movies on DVD and later got obsessed with Friendship is Magic, her favorite is Fluttershy. Her favorite Disney Princesses are Snow White and Aurora. Practical magic is her comfort movie

Emma - Bratz girl, bought many dolls, watched all of the movies, even the live action one and listen to every album. Was also obsessed with Totally spies and Kim Possible, wanted to be a spy until she was 10. Despite being Bratz girl she did seen few Barbie movies, 3 musketeers is probably her favorite. Will unironically say that Kuzco is her favorite Disney Princess, it's actually Jasmine. Also a big fan of Jem and the holograms. Can quote Mean Girls so well it's actually scary

Amelia - one of those Barbie scholars. Not only has she see all of the movies she also knows deep lore of the toy. Don't ask her which movie is her favorite, she cannot choose. Adores Legally Blonde, movie and the musical. Hello Kitty aesthetic. Favorite Disney Princess is Rapunzel. Read Princess Diaries serie and hates to movie for completly ruining the story

Emmeline - MLP stan, can sing every song on Rainbow Rocks soundtrack, her favorite is Twilight, og LyraBon shipper. Also loves Care Bears, definetly annoys everyone by yelling Care Bear Stare while throwing thing at people. Had a massive crush on David Bowie and watch Labyrinth over and over again. Favorite Disney Princess are Ariel and Mulan and favorite Barbie movie is Princess and the Pauper

Lucinda - Evar After High girl, watch the whole show, bought many dolls and had a diary with a key. Thought Somebody to Love was written for Ella Enchanted. Favorite Barbie movie is Thumbelina. Got really into Buffy as she grew older. Grew up with DreamWorks rather than Disney, but Jasmin is probably her favorite princess

Hestia - lived near sea and had a mermaid phase. Watched H2O and Aquamarine almost every day. Marmaid Tale duology stan. Favorite Disney Princess is obviously Ariel and favorite pony is Pinkie Pie. Had a small Sylvanian Families collection. Was also a big Sailor Moon fan. Adores studio ghiblie movies, especially Ponyo. Story Land Fairy: A Review

Ngl this was an impulse purchase from Tuesday morning. I’d seen these there before I’m sure, and had largely ignored them, but something about this one today caught my eye and made me bring her home. Was it worth the $5? Well let’s find out. 

Her box is pretty generic looking quite frankly, and makes her easy to pass over at first look. Combined with a shoddy looking outfit I first assumed she was an off brand bootleg. But no, she’s Madame Alexander, tho considering the Madame’s other foray’s into play line dolls; I should’ve been less surprised they’d put something like this out. 

On the back there’s images of what I assume to be the entire line, and are obviously based off the disney version of each fairy tale. It’s boring, almost everyone is blonde, and the prototypes somehow manage to look even cheaper than the ones in production.

She’s held in pretty loosely, but it’s adequate and I appreciate not having to pull out head plugs. 

For all my negative talk, her face is what made me buy her. She looks amusingly sarcastic, and she has lovely, delicate eyelashes. She gives off someehat of a vintage vibe too. I like it a lot. 

Now if only this outfit was’t garbage. It doesn’t even fit; I tried pulling the skirt up but it just falls down again. There’s no way to tighten any more either.

The top is decently constructed, and the material doesn’t feel quite as cheap as it looks. 

The base of the shoes are ok, but those pom poms started falling off immediately. they might as well have not been stuck on at all. I was gonna rip them off anyway, but it’s so cheap they couldn’t attach them even slightly better. 

speaking of bad attachments, these wings are a joke. they’re thin, flimsy plastic. useless.  

But this, this is still the worst piece. This skirt is made of felt. 

unhemmed felt. 

with a mesh overlay. This looks like something a kid would make as a craft project. Heck I bet a kid could’ve made her a better outfit. I mean, no snaps, no velcro, you have to tie the skirt on; it’s so cheap.

Out of those bad clothes tho, you actually start to see some of the cute in her. She’s made of a pretty solid, if slightly rubber-y plastic. It’s about like what you see in the disney store dolls. It’s a shame they hid such a cute doll under those bad clothes.

Articulation wise, she has no up/down movement, only side to side.

is just shy of of that right angle with elbow articulation.

But sits very nicely, overall it’s fairly decent for this size of doll, and way more than I usually see in child-depicting dolls. it’s fairly easy to pose her in a relaxed way.

After a little digging I found her a new outfit to wear, and it brings her to life much more that the tinkerbelle bootleg look ever did. Look at that smirk. 

These are Skipper/Stacy clothes btw, but she can also fit a few bratz clothes.  

For a sense of size and scale, here’s her next to Grumpy Bear Barbie. She’s just a little over sized for the 12″ scale. I imagine she’d go nicely with any 14″ doll however, whether it be the Madame ones or singing disney or whatever else. 

I like her overall, tho I don’t recommend spending more than $5 on one (unless you just REALLY want her), considering so much of that outfit will likely end up in the trash. She wasn’t the worst thing I’ve bought on impulse by a mile though, with reasonably decent articulation, cute hair style, and subtly expressive face.

If you’re into this kind of doll, she’s not a bad buy!

Doll debates? and disclosure.

Looking back at my childhood, I honestly didn't really have a problem with my Barbie doll. Tumblr and other sources of opinions made a big deal about Barbie's body image and the mob mentality took me with it for a while. I didn't care about her body type as a kid. Her light skin, blond hair and blue eyes maybe, but I was lucky to have a brown-skinned Barbie with brown eyes that it didn't bother me as much, and I loved that doll. In fact, I am guilty of loving the old Barbie movies, no matter how pink, chickflicky and frilly they may be! Barbie was a kind, relatable protagonist with a heart of gold. She went on different adventures, be it school life or fairy tales. The recent addition of varied body types just adds more good to her line.

Now, I was a Barbie girl, my cousin was a Bratz girl.

As a kid, I never really liked the Bratz line because of how flashy their fashion and makeup were and exaggerated features they had. It just wasn't my kind of style, but it was my cousin's favorite. i think it was just the art style that irked me. Later I watched the Bratz live action movie, and it was actually pretty good. I didnt really know the characters of Bratz, just their merch. They were just as relatable as Barbie was, just with much more attitude.

Similar to Bratz, I didn't like Monster High's style either. Both were heavy on the fashion feature and contrasting colors. But I am guilty of binging MH webisodes. Despite all the cringey overuse of monster puns and high school archtypes, which kinda limits them to high school tv drama , the characters are entertaining and do their best to give a moral message in a monstery twist.

Ever After High was more my cup of tea, and you could almost tell from their dolls how pleasant they were from their soft tones and fantastical designs. They're just like monster high, just softer. Yes, I'm a little tulip who can't take the heat of the sassy and attitude driven fashionistas, don't hate me. For someone who wanted to play it safe, they could easily go for an EAH doll. They're line and show is all about self identity and befriending or facing others at odds.

Modernisation of problems

Based on a mix of history books and fictional stories, we can safely say problems that we experience have changed through the centuries. Where once it was witch trials, poisoning your enemies and kidnapping, now it’s obesity, income and instability. Fairytales have curses placed on kidnapped royals avoiding eating poisoned apples and sleeping for a hundred years until they get technically assaulted by a prince and wake up to marry him, have an evil family and wish to stop being half fish, fall in love with a thief or a man who was turned into a viscous creature or a frog, and still marry them at the end. And considering most of the girls featured in these stories are minors, how would all this translate in todays society?

Well, despite the fact none of them are minors anymore, Shrek is a parody upon classic fairytale and Disney princesses, and puts them into a modernised version of a medical land. Putting modern problems and twists into a past setting. Shrek the Third features the most of the princesses in which they team up to fight Charming’s plan to take over the kingdom. While it’s very clear the traditional princesses wouldn’t take on martial arts against magical trees and Captain Hook, they don’t face overly many issues, but they also never had each other in the in tales. The most Modern part is the hit-legs-looks-and-sounds-like-a-man gag with Dorris distracting the guards.

I think a movie that represents more the issues of the past of the girls in fairytales is the Bratz Kids Fairytales movie, in which the younger version of the Bratz are essentially slagging off the fairytales while rehearsing for small plays where they would act out the fairytales, that the heroine were weak and “lame”. As a result, they are sent into their fairytales by a frog prince, the who cannot take back his princely side until the girls believe in the fairytales again, all caused by the ‘keeper’ overhearing their complaints. So the frog zaps them into the fairytale world

Cloe, as Rapunzel, must escape the witch in her tower. Thinking it’s as easy as climb out of the tower and run, she is caught and nearly thrown into a stew. Her friends had to come to her rescue. Second, Jade, as Snow White, runs from the huntsman instead of the traditional begging for mercy, ending up having to clean the dwarves home for safety while avoiding the evil queen and the dwarves rehearse for their rock band. While the girls got taken back in time, the salty humour and other characters keep to a quite modern attitude. Sasha tries to escape the wolf, not once being fooled by the wolf, and ends up having to run from him where the traditional would have been saved by a woodchopper. The Bratz manage to trip him into the well, where the evil queen and witch end up. Finally, Yasmin as Cinderella must sneak out to the ball, but by acting as if she doesn’t care for it, it causes the step mother and step sisters to stay home to watch her. She manages to run away by convincing them to go to the ball, and with the help of Goldilocks who was turned into a stump by the witch, manage to find her fairy godmother who preps her for the ball and turns Both Goldilocks and Rumpelstiltskin back into humans. On their way to the castle though, the witch, queen and wolf make their way out of the well for a final battle. The frog zaps them back home once they complete the fairytales by midnight.

The Bratz learn how much easier they have it compared to the heroine of the fairytales, and put their faith and value back into the stories. They also learn not to judge people before they’ve walked in their shoes.

A final example of the modernisation of these is between Barbie Princess and The Pauper, and Barbie Princess and The Popstar. Firstly, the remake ruined it, I’m sorry but it was a beautiful re-write of the Prince and the Pauper with an intelligent princess pursuing science, and a pauper trying to pursue singing. In the original, Annaliese was to be married to a king in a nearby kingdom as her kingdom was broke, and Erika was trying to repay her debt to a dress shop owner for lending money to her parents. The queens advisor kidnapped the princess so she would marry him so he could be king, but to foil his plan, the princesses tutor asked for Erika’s help and to pretend to be the princess. It resulted in Annaliese and the tutor being locked away in a flooding mine and Erika in prison, and the advisor marrying the queen. With Annaliese’s studies, she managed to get her tutor and her afloat to the surface in a barrel by increasing the water flow, and the King getting Erika out of Jail to stop the wedding. It was a sweet story of friendship and fighting for the better.

However, the new one had a Princess and a singer who were each jealous of the others life, and with the help of a magic microphone and magic hairbrush, they swapped appearances and spent a day in each others life. The princess realised her stage fright made a popstar’s life difficult, and the singer found writing a speech about a kingdom she knows nothing about made a princess’ life difficult. So as a result, the princess’ dog helped the singer sneak out of doing the speech to help the princess with her show. While the movie had a don’t judge until you know their life moral to it, it was simply an insult to the original movie just to make money, but showed the difference between problems in past centuries versus modern problems, despite the problems being child friendly in these versions for their audience.

Why children are greedy? The thing of course in education. I know that every parent says to the child that you need to share. But it does not always bring the desired effect.

Remember: if you want your child to be generous, be themselves such. No, keep buying expensive toys are not necessary. Just promise baby to buy the same, only much better, but a little bit later.

In this case it is not necessary to mention the price, otherwise your child will understand that you are greedy.

Tips from me:

Promise to buy what the child wants, and make a promise to the extent possible.

Do not tell your child that you can not buy this thing because of its price.

Kids react to presents and gifts - Fail compilation

Explain to the child with the help of a fairy tale or story, why it is important to be generous.

Never argue with someone for money at the child. Especially if you are going to point to the opponent's profligacy.

During submissions, I became so absolutely excited when I saw this pop up. I don't know who decided to submit it, but they unlocked some childhood memories for me. Back when I was a child, my family visited Pakistan (my parent's country of origin) for the entire summer. One day I, bored, asked for some movies to watched and my parents and uncle brought back some clearly bootlegged DVDs dubbed in Hindi/Urdu, and Bratz Kids Fairy Tales was one of them. I watched it so many times, you have no idea- I think that I might have wrecked the whole DVD with how much I watched it. (A similar thing happened later on when I obtained a clearly bootlegged copy of Bratz Fashion Pixie too but that's another, non-Red Riding Hood related story.) I wasn't surprised that it was eliminated right off the bat, but my childhood nostalgia dictated I put it here, or else I would be betraying the 7-year-old in me.

Shang, Tao, and Paotze:

Another childhood favorite of mine. This picture book has such beautiful art and I remember being very surprised by the story as a child. I found a PDF of it online to reread when the contest started and honestly it still holds up. The three sisters that are the Red Riding Hood in the story I feel are genuinely very clever. And for nothing else, look this one up solely for it's beautiful art which is just breath-taking whether you're a child or an adult!

Lamb:

Not going to lie I never played this game. My good friend who I adore submitted this to the poll and it immediately got eliminated and I just felt bad lol. But it does look cool & I trust their taste so I do think that this game is great. I want to play it but I am really bad at getting myself to play games.

Aku:

Samurai Jack is a CLASSIC and I dare you to not watch this clip and crack up. Mako was a gift of voice acting and I miss him so much. Also this episode is just pretty amusing.

Amy Lee:

My sister was actually the one to submit this and I will use her own propaganda here: "Evanescence was a voice of a generation." Honestly this song is kind of just okay, there are better Evanescence songs, but got to respect the effort they put into the music video. Who can resist to choose Amy Lee anyway?

The Path sisters:

Like many people who know this game, I know it through Izzzyzzz's two video essays on it. I didn't play the game afterwards, but I did watch some play-throughs since I don't play many games + it seemed mostly like a walking simulator anyway so I felt like I got the same effect. It is AMAZING and has so much story and analysis and I love shit like that... In particular, Scarlet, Ruby, and Rose are my favorites whose stories really resonated with me, even if I haven't exactly gone through their life experiences. Ginger too. And there's some really horrific imagery in Robin's...I would recommend everyone find a way to experience this game-- whether that's playing it, watching Izzzyzzz's videos, or finding a walk-through/analysis of it, it's worth it!

So this manga is sort of obscure but it is also sort of nostalgic to me. Well, nostalgic by proxy. My sister read it when I was younger and told me some details about it and for some reason it stuck with me. Like??? For no reason. It's not even that good lmao. The first chapter right off the bat is pretty edgy & handles sensitive topics very badly. But goddamn if I do not think about random elements of the story for no reason. I don't really remember shit about Lisette but hey this picture of her looks really cool.

Red:

If you notice a theme among these being "nostalgia" you would be right, as this was another nostalgic offering from my childhood that I would watch semi-annually. I was also fond of the sequel, though I thought it felt like a different series than the first one. (Which isn't unusual with animated sequels to popular movies, but the fact that the sequel was set-up by the ending of the first one implies it was planned? Weird). But anyway Red is iconic and funny and voiced by Anne Hathaway and also her sad emo song "Red is Blue" sometimes still gets stuck in my head, so take that as you will.

Chacha:

I know absolutely nothing about this series. But it looks very cute so I like it. I love cute magical girls they deserve the world. Also I looked it up and apparently the Studio who did the Akazukin Chacha anime would later do the Yu-Gi-Oh animes from the 2000s and 2010s, so there's the obligatory mention of nostalgia.
