Wukong would do anything to protect and have you by his side, which is why the quest for immortality was very important. So he can spend the rest of his existence with you, and nothing gonna matter. Christianity for Dana Terrace and TOH

I have to wonder about and consider The Owl House as an expression of Dana Terrace's own nuanced relationship with Christianity. We know she was raised in a Catholic school, and we've heard of the out-of-context incident where she got put into a headlock by a nun as a child (idk if context even matters in this scenario);

Plus, there's the show's obvious critiques of Christianity, via Belos' fanaticism and demonization of witches, plus his superiority complex and belief in predestination. And then we have Tarak bonding with King as a potential father figure, even being mistaken for his dad, only to sacrifice him anyway for the Grand Huntsman despite whatever hesitations he has; This story beat echoes the tale of Abraham and Isaac. The Emperor’s Coven/Cult is clearly Catholic.

But at the same time, we have Steve's reminiscing over the Titan as perhaps just some dude who doesn't know what he wants, either; And he's saying this as a former member of the Emperor's Coven, which itself applied a very Christian understanding of the Titan via Belos. We have Luz meeting the Titan in-person, and seeing that he's not some deity but just a person who meant well and tried his best.

The show emphasizes people being able to improve and get better and needing that chance, plus what I've said about Luz possibly being meant to represent a more positive, accurate portrayal of Jesus Christ; She dies and is resurrected with the power of the Titan, who isn't quite God but maybe she is in a meta sense? It's complicated.

So to psychoanalyze a real life person through their art (which I guess is what single author classes does to a mf), I have to consider that it's not as simple as Dana condemning Christianity as a whole; More than likely, a specific brand of Christianity, namely Evangelicalism, Catholicism, etc. We have to remember that what we often criticize as Christianity is more so a specific denomination, or group of; Christianity is a widespread religion comprised of countless different takes and interpretations of the Bible.

And IIRC (a source would be helpful), I think Dana even clarified that her experience with Catholic school wasn't wholly negative either? She did not consider herself abused, or at least abused abused. Her feelings might be mixed, especially because one doesn’t need to personally experience the worst to know about it; That is another way in which one might become critical.

I don't think Dana is outright resentful of Christianity as a whole, she might just have complicated feelings, criticisms, and thoughts; Tbf, this is how many denominations came to being. So when I see Steve reflecting on the Titan, and Luz getting to meet him... I think these scenes are, in a way, Dana making peace with the idea of God in her life; Getting to consider her relationship with and belief (or lack thereof) in him, and his paternal status to the world as a whole.

She's also recognizing his fallibility, God is a person and like any person his insight and support is illuminating, but not all-encompassing; It's not doctrine, it's just advice, from one person to another. So when the Titan reassures Luz, or Dana, he's not saying she's the specialest chosen one in the world; He's just someone with a lot of experience who can provide some guidance and clarification on life, not unlike Eda.

The Titan saying goodbye to Luz feels like Dana being able to part on -ultimately- good terms after resolving that major anxiety in her life, on a final note that is no longer resentful and more a fond memory overall. It’s her moving to the next stage of her life, as Luz herself does, now able to carry and believe in herself, and not need that same guidance to figure out what to do.

It’s a coming of age moment appreciating what was given by a paternal figure, with Dana now comfortable exploring other beliefs and practices after making her farewell with Christianity by realizing it isn’t absolute, yet still treasuring what it was able to give her. So she carries on what she can, at least in spirit, like… Luz and the glyphs, remembering them, and now having her own palisman to continue her love of magic that the Titan helped support. So we have both the narrative meaning to Luz behind all of this, and the real-life significance for Dana herself, which aren’t quite the same but there is overlap. And there’s also the other meaning for Dana in how the Titan represents her father, which we’ve already discussed.

So The Owl House and the storyline of the Titan could be Dana's own nuanced takeaway from Christianity; Her exploring how she feels about it, what she appreciates, what she doesn't, how it fits into the rest of her worldview. And I don’t think Dana is trying to convert anyone, nor condemn those who feel irreverent. I think she’s more about deconstructing Christianity to reconstruct it.

Be Gay, Do Witchcraft of course, I think there is a catharsis in exploring that. And also, because the sentiment behind that phrase might be less about Christianity being inherently evil, and more so that many queers don’t care what evangelicals think of them anymore; So sure, we’ll humor your fears for fun, we ARE the demons we’re accused of being. It’s like Eda saying “Well we ain’t!” in response to Belos’ claim that humans are inherently better. Plus demonized belief systems that aren’t Christianity deserve validity as well, hence the pagan influences being portrayed positively, with the narrative questioning the dismissal of certain ideas being ‘demonic’ or ‘savage’.

And of course, co-existence IS possible. And I find this important because it can be easy to just dismiss religion entirely in an edgy internet atheist type of way, but in the end one must reconcile that religion means a lot for a lot of people, many whom ARE chill and willing to co-exist; The narrative presents the spirituality of the Boiling Isles as something precious, for example. All belief systems are valid, not just these select few.

And maybe they don’t have to be mutually exclusive with queerness or “alternative” lifestyles, because a lot of people from these demographics aren’t quite comfortable with just getting rid of religion entirely, and they’re entitled to still maintaining that connection. If feminists can still have a nuanced relationship with femininity, so can believers with their religion.

People are simply asking to be allowed to exist and practice their beliefs in peace, they aren’t really calling for the eradication of the other. Just as queers don’t actually intend to abolish heterosexuality, they just want to be left alone. Let people decide how they feel about certain things, instead of making them get rid of it for their own good; That is every individual’s personal choice, just as yours is. And that feels relevant, given how much Choice is a theme in this show, and especially in the finale in which Luz meets the Titan properly, with the Titan emphasizing this agency to her.

and then its like. waking up in his own grave. digging himself out. pulling up the sleeve on his right arm to see a bright red handprint BRANDED on his skin. linking up with alex who is maybe making inadvisable choices in marc's absence (going insane, drinking demon blood and training to kill the demon that killed marc etc). going to a psychic and vale accidently burning out her EYEBALLS. summoning vale to a barn in the middle of nowhere and vale walks in like a spritely little y2k eurotrash ASSHOLE with sideburns and sparks flying and the windows rattle and he looks at marc and tilts his head and smiles.... and marc asks who are you. and vale hits him with the "im the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition" and then marc STABS HIM…

I’ve been thinking a lot about how good adam’s relationship to cabeswater is as a metaphor for healing and accepting love.

in the raven boys, adam is chafing under his father’s thumb. not just the abuse, but the way that he controls, shapes, or influences every part of adam’s life. adam hates not being able to make his own decisions or be his own person in the way that he wants:

this is why his sacrifice to cabeswater works so well - it’s deeply personal, and deeply hurtful. he truly believes that he is giving up his newly obtained autonomy. it’s not an accident that this happens mere hours after he leaves the trailer for good. in his mind, in that moment, he’s trading one tyrant for another.

in the dream thieves, our boy is struggling with the fallout. cabeswater is frightening him, playing tricks on him, it’s not far off to say that it’s tormenting him. in his narrative climax, persephone helps him to recalibrate and begin to untangle his father’s abuse from cabeswater’s brand of haunting:

this is the first step in understanding that not all ways of being beholden to someone are equal; that sacrificing part of yourself to something (or someone) doesn’t have to be the end of the world, and can actually be an incredibly worthy thing, if it’s done through love instead of hate.

in blue lily, lily blue, we see adam begin to make deliberate choices between them. in particular, we get the scene where he dissociates in front of his father. it’s likely he’d done this before, but this time there’s a clear manifestation of cabeswater as a protector. adam continues to draw parallels between the two:

he’s using persephone’s advice on controlling and managing cabeswater’s mental fuckery to reframe his father’s verbal abuse into something else that he doesn’t need to listen to or accept. and now that he’s drawn boundaries with cabeswater in that way, he invites it in as a physical protector against his father’s physical abuse:

in the raven king, when the demon corrupts cabeswater, it takes adam’s book one sacrifice and tries to turn him into the one thing he fears the most: his father. he’s struggled for the entire series against the cycle of violence, against what he thinks is his monster blood, his tendency towards anger, his worries that he’ll grow up to hurt anyone he loves. he's also fought so hard to carve out his own power and autonomy. all his fears come home to roost at once when his hands try to kill ronan:

but then, the way he gets himself free is by once again choosing to sacrifice to cabeswater:

just because there was a setback, doesn’t mean that all his hard work has been undone.

he just has to keep choosing love.

I always though Olvia might've been scared - she abdnoned her daughter, yet Robin still loved her. She could've been afraid of having been there for her, not living up to what he wished for. Going out like a hero leaves the idealized image in Robin's mind, as selfish as it might seem. Olvia also already sacrificed Robin for her work - trying to back out now, at the very end, might seen like a cowardly move. Like she's running from the danger when it's gotten 'too much'.

”And it may seem especially cowardly, after Robin studied so much AND outed herself as 'one to kill' in front of government just to get Olvia's attention. Robin was risking her life for knowledge, how could Olvia just turn tail and run?”

While I think fear would be a pretty natural reaction for someone in Olvia’s position, it’s not something I feel is supported by the manga itself. Olvia’s (and the rest of the archeologist’s) sacrifice is portrayed a lot like Bellemeres death in that it was maybe not the most logical thing to do in that situation, but noble in that they were sticking to their convictions even if it killed them.

One Piece has always taken this sort of stance though. Yasopp is never demonizes for abandoning his family and Luffy’s done plenty of morally questionable things in his efforts to be the Pirate King. There’s always that element of selfishness when it comes to pursuing your dreams without abandon, and this is a series where that brand of selfishness is treated very positively. Most of the time I’m okay with that; it just rubs me the wrong way here despite being thematically consistent

What's one thing you enjoy about five different DBD characters?

Yessss I'll do my favourites.

Edwin -> He is the most character to ever character. But I think my favourite thing is his unrelenting kindness. After he escaped Hell, his literal #1 priority was helping a dying boy feel comfortable. While he was in hell being chased by a spider demon, he helped the person who killed him rest in peace. He is such a Good person. (I think this is why I so deeply want him to interact with Alastair Carstairs - this is also my favourite trait of Alastair's.

Charles -> I really relate to Charles acting as though he is happy to keep spirits up and make sure everyone is happy. (This is the trait that I relate most to in Matthew, too - but Matthew's brand of Lights, Camera, Bitch, Smile, Even When You Wanna Die is more akin to mine.) Anyway, I just think Charles is such a... selfless person, idk. In a lot of ways, he is willing to sacrifice himself for his loved ones and go to Hell for Edwin. Like, imagine the sheer love that would take. He is so full of love.

The Cat King -> For me, I mostly adore the Cat King because he is a lot of fun and Lukas Gage is an excellent performer. (Like, I think he could easily be portrayed as an extremely unlikeable character, but Lukas Gage really just makes him... fun.) I think he's so Dramatic. Like, he can't materialize in a forest without a rug and a chandelier. But his loneliness is also complex and idk. He appeals to me.

Niko -> I love how she's both endlessly bubbly and whip-smart. People totally underestimate her because they think she's a silly girl, but she honestly is at the core of every interaction. She makes people like her, and it gets them comfortable enough to spill intentions or help her. But she's not doing this on purpose, she's just Nice and Likeable. I also have to mention her relationship with Edwin because it's such a precious highlight of the show to me.

Crystal -> I think it's really interesting to see a character who is going through a really horrible, traumatic situation that is completely invisible to others. Even the boys, though they know about it, do not understand what it's like inside her mind until Charles in 1x6. I also love her sense of humor, like she's so funny and is an icon.

Bonus because I like her too much to exclude her

Night Nurse -> She's literally just trying to live her life in a world under capitalism. Cut her some slack. It's so relatable.

Guts and Griffith in Death Note World:

Both of them would be able to perceive the shinigami, based on how they walk the line between reality and the aethereal world.

Griffith's nearest equivalent status is probably the Shinigami King -Ryuk would be shitting himself if they ever spotted each other

But Guts' demon-attracting brand would have the shinigami swooping at him like seagulls whenever he got too near.

Ooh, it's interesting to imagine the shinigami stuff blended with the monster/god stuff in Berserk! The shinigami visibility rules are a bit like how some people can see Puck and some people can't and whatnot, and the decision to sacrifice something like your life or your humanity to obtain supernatural strength and higher power is def is a theme they have in common as well

I'm so sorry I only just saw your last post on the pirate au^^" it's late though so this is probably gonna be rather short.

So, I do like your idea, for Mel to finally be 'revealed' when Zeldris confronts him. For that to happen though, I think Mel and Zels father would have to want to take Meliodas back for... something. The Liones Naval Fleet is strong and even the Demon King wouldn't risk attacking them unless they had something or someone irreplacable to him, this being Meliodas. Why would he want him back? Well, there could be a few reasons, like he wants to make Meliodas the leader of his crew and snap him out of his "little tantrum" (in which case the DK would obv view Meliodas as nothing more than a small child), or he actually wants Meliodas dead as either revenge or because he knows something that he can't have his enemies know. One Idea I kinda like though is that the DK wants Meliodas back to sacrifice him in some sort of ritual so that he (the DK) can, like, gain immortality or to make Meliodas his puppet or something. Not like in canon, where he takes Meliodas' body for himself, but in a more literal sense. The DK and Mel are still separate people, but after the ritual Meliodas would be unable to disobey the DK. And I mentioned that Meliodas and Zeldris aren't (completely) human, that's also relevant in the ritual, I don't know how yet though. Wait, I just realized, if the DK is attacking Liones to get to Meliodas, he would have to know that Meliodas was with them, otherwise he wouldn't take the risk of getting captured and/or killed.

And one more thing, Zeldris mentioned that a Liones general killed their mother, but would that general be Baltra or Zaratras? Or someone else before them? Would that general be related to Baltra, like maybe it was Baltras father or something? Was Baltra there when their mother was killed? If so, he might have recognized Meliodas from back then already, even before he realized that he was the pirate Meliodas. Ooooh, this could cause a mighty rift between Mel and Baltra, because Baltra took Meliodas in and cared for him, but he also just stood there and watched as his mother was murdered in front of him, which, in Meliodas' mind, would brand him a coward and may even get Meliodas to willingly go back to his father. Not for his father or Zeldris, but so he could enact his own revenge. The ritual his father needs him for could also be a ritual to enhance or awaken his non-human powers. He could be like a giant sea dragon or something. Honestly I'm still not entirely sure about that, but it kinda has to be something monstrous. It could be possible that their father and their mother were two different kinds of sea monsters, so Meliodas and Zeldris could be something new entirely, unknown but powerful.

I love your ideas on why the DK might be attacking the Liones Naval Fleet.

The DK may be strong, but he's not stupid enough to just charge in and ruthlessly attack them. As you said, the LNF are a formidable foe, and very powerful. Maybe there could be rumors that a young boy with golden hair recently joined their crew? And it causes the DK to go in search of him to bring him back.

Meliodas was the general at one point, so he does know some pretty big secrets about their fleet that he could reveal to the enemy. So the Demon King is urgently tracking down Meliodas so he can't spill any secrets to their sworn enemy.

I feel like Bartra could be the best candidate for the general who killed their mother. And the realization that Batra killed their mother would JUST be enough for Meliodas to switch sides again. They showed him kindness by helping him when he was wounded, but now that the cards are out, he's seemingly done helping them.

I also feel like Meliodas wouldn't know it was Batra who killed their mother, as she most likely would have hid them from sight and eventually died. With baby Meliodas and Zeldris crawling out after the fight and realizing that their mother had been killed. when askinig their father, he just says. 'Damn Liones generals did this.'

Just a bit more added to the shock factor in the revelation of this.
