I Tried My Hand at Designing the Full Witches of the Main Cast of Magia Record.

CAMPANELLA (Yachiyo Nanami)

The ticket puncher witch. Her nature is admittance. From not only beneath her dress, but under her hat and as well as the multitude of eyes on her tail, black watery tears spill forth with such intensity that her entire barrier is flooded with her tears. She eternally waits for a train for her board on and be reunited with her friends, but she struggles to find the train station itself. Using her lantern, she will eternally wander her ever flooded barrier to find her way to the station. If one were to be harmed by the ticket puncher at the end of her scorpion like tail, great devastation and tragedy awaits them in the near future.

YU HONG (Tsuruno Yui)

The witch of ham. Her nature is harmonious. Both great fortune and great success are the ingredients used by this witch in her kitchen, but all that she ends up producing is dubious meals that may or may not cause harm to the human body. She detests any form of household tensions and if she senses even the slightest resentment of a family member, she will force her victim into eating a feast of her aforementioned dubious cooking. Only those who don’t hide themselves from family troubles or conflict can defeat her.

BEATRICE (Felicia Mitsuki)

The eyelid witch. Her nature is tumultuous. A witch who spends most, if not all her time completely asleep within her barrier, and will almost never actively hunt humans when awake. On the other hand, this witch for whatever reason harbours a complete and utter hatred for other witches and whenever she is awake, will mercilessly locate and smash other witches flat with her mallet like hands. If there is something positive that catches her attention however, she will fear that they will somehow leave her and attempt to bury them in her concrete like tears that she spews forth from her eyes.

THERESIA (Sana Futaba)

The inquisition chair witch. Her nature is transparency. Eternally sitting atop a chair with a mind of its own, this innocent witch lives in perpetual torment and agony. The chair itself is not a part of the witch, and carries out its duty to keep the witch chained to its spiked body and weaponize the truly staggering amount of torture devices it has at its disposal. The witch desires not to hurt anyone and is further tormented by the acts of intense violence that unfold before her. Due to being invisible, her sobs are the only clue where to strike if one wants to hunt this pitiful witch. When the witch dies, a single innocuous sound of a cat meowing will echo through the barrier.

ZOLA (Kaede Akino)

The witch of plot lands. Her nature is to be territorial. Within this witches’ head is planted the simple goal of expanding her territory. When she arrives to an urban area, she desires nothing but to return it to nature and covers it completely in rotten moss. She doesn’t tolerate any form of pest, as she sees them as encroaching on her property and will mercilessly destroy anything that steps into her barrier. Despite this outwardly aggressive behaviour, she is gentle towards the plant life in her barrier, which she grows herself. For some odd reason, these plants moan and can move on their own like zombies, so it’s best not to approach them at all.

CENDRILLION (Rena Minami)

The glass slipper witch. Her nature is transformative. This witch detests herself, and desires to change no matter what. When she senses someone in her barrier, she rush up to them and tear their face off. These faces are then turned into masks, and the witch can freely transform into them. However, she cannot imitate the soul of her victims and usually just ends up acting like a wild animal. If one were to gaze into the mirror on her arm like appendage for too long, she will steal their soul. When the witch dies, a single glass slipper will fall out of no where and shatter to pieces.

ELFRIEDE (Momoko Togame)

The witch of manicured nails. Her nature is self-discipline. This witch cares not where it’s power flies. It continually and proudly displays and decorates the fingers and nails that not only make up her body, but also fly around her as well. It takes great care of its shoddy manicures, but when someone insults it’s nails it becomes quite depressed and either attempts to pierce the victim with her razor sharp nails, or becomes paralyzed with insecurity. Only those who can get up again and again even after misfortune can successfully defeat this witch.

TOTENTANZ (Mitama Yakumo)

The witch of flower petals. Her nature is forewarning. This witch doesn’t forget that no matter what, death comes to all things. It resents its environment and desires nothing but it’s untimely destruction. It is strangely gentlemanly, and escorts those who enter her barrier with pure white gloves, but her terrifying power that is connected to the untimely end of all things often ends up decaying anything that her petals fall upon. Even if you manage to defeat this witch, the sheer amount of pent up curses will often end up taint a soul gem to its limit and will end with a new witch springing up in her place.

synopsis: abyss unexpectedly finds himself a place at easton and becomes busy with magia lupus

abyss never would have thought that his parents would even send him to school, much less one as prestigious and famous as easton magic academy

although he never understood why, he more or less preferred being in school than live in the same household as his parents

even though there's only little differences to how he gets treated by his peers and his parents

but the worst thing his peers had ever done was talk bad about his cursed eye— not that it actually made the situation much better

at least he managed to get himself into a group that didn't make him feel too out of place

he also found himself admiring a male by the name of abel walker who he swore to serve in gratitude for looking past his evil eye and recruiting him into magia lupus

abyss forgot about meeting the eccentric lady from a few years back since he got busy with wanting to make himself useful to abel in making the goals of magia lupus a reality

the hallways were bustling with more life than usual and abel seemed to be curious what it was about

while walking a bit slower, abyss also tried to listen to the loud whispers but opted to focus his attention to the closest group of girls

“hey, did you hear?”

“are you talking about the new student joining our academy this late into the semester?”

“yeah, yeah. apparently they got in because of family connections”

“ehh… even that kind of thing can't be avoided in easton, huh?”

“well… do you actually know who it is?”

“i heard from someone that it's a girl”

“really? that sucks i was hoping for a cute guy”

“oh stop being delusional already”

“so continuing, she's apparently a double liner”

abel and abyss’ ears immediately noticed and they shared a look

another potential recruit

but before either of them could learn of the new student’s identity, the whispers significantly quieted down, taking notice of abel and abyss' presence

then the gossiping students hurriedly dispersed themselves without further wait

abel calls for abyss to recruit the new student and the masked male only nods in acknowledgement of the task

apparently everyone, even the other fangs, were tasked to try recruiting this new student

one would think it was an easy task with how quick word got around and how many members there were in magia lupus

but alas, none of them were successful in finding even finding out the identity of the new student aside from the information that they were female

none of the gossiping students seem to be spilling anything that could expose the new student's identity despite there being talks about the topic

like a magic spell had prevented anyone from speaking of it— or perhaps it was just a coincidence

some fangs also proposed that maybe the new student is from a very powerful family that anyone who spoke ill or exposed her identity could get in more than just trouble

love cute suggested that maybe news of a new student appearing was fake

at that, everyone also started thinking love’s statement made sense despite a huge percent of the student population buzzing with gossip about this new student

abel then called for the fangs to focus on other objectives instead while keeping an eye out for the new potential recruit

at that, the magia lupus meeting ended

“that's the report, my lady” a maid bows while finishing her report

you sighed at the information you received

“things haven't quieted down yet, huh?”

the maid, your attendant, only nods, dreading what you had schemed in that head of yours

you were due to present yourself in school a few days ago, but then you made a fuss about not wanting to go when the campus would be noisy

your reasoning was that it was bothersome to try and tolerate it

the attendant sighs internally, not even knowing what to expect from her lady anymore

it's pretty obvious this poor attendant should be given a well-deserved vacation at this point

all the while, you were coming up with plans to at the very least entertain yourself in a situation where you got forced by your family to attend easton

you might as well have fun, right?

What is a Witch’s Kiss?

In Puella Magi Madoka Magica and related works, a Witch's Kiss is a marking, the personal symbol or calling card of a Witch, used by a Witch and its Familiars (or Minions) to control the minds of humans and to mark their Labyrinth. These markings can be used to exacerbate pre-existing negative emotions and thoughts, change personalities, make people commit crimes or self-harm, or lure them into a Labyrinth to be consumed by the Witch inside. Some of these actions may not necessarily lead humans to being consumed: some Witches may merely desire to spread evil and misfortune regardless if they get sustenance. Furthermore, a ‘kissed’ human may not always die from it. Familiars can also kiss humans well outside of the Labyrinth they hail from in order to bring them to their Witch.

Note: In the magical hero community, I’ve heard these markings referred to as ‘sigils’ as well, but I hesitate to use that terminology for this case because I think it can cause unnecessary confusion for practitioners who regularly use sigils in their own magia. I can acknowledge that a Witch utilizes their Kiss as a sigil for their own gain, however.

If a puella magi or other magical hero is in possession of a Witch’s Kiss, it generally means that they came across it somehow in their day-to-day or astral travels and took note of its components for later exploration into the corresponding Labyrinth. The Kiss can contain visual elements that reveal attributes of the Witch including her appearance, nature, or even aspects of her Labyrinth or Familiars; this information is extremely helpful for any magical hero who is preparing to engage in magical combat with a Witch. The Kiss itself can also be used as a portal into its owner’s Labyrinth.

As a chaos magick practitioner as well, I assert that one can also reverse engineer a Witch’s Kiss for their own spellcraft. Is there something that you want to combat magically? Sigilize components of whatever you want vanquish and create a Kiss. This, in turn, can help conceptualize the trouble you are facing into a Witch and thus easier to focus energy towards defeating.

If you need a template for understanding or documenting a Witch, whether found or created, I recommend this format that was used for many of the Witch Cards that were displayed on the original Japanese website for the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime:

Ran, the eldest son of the Haitani family, has spent his entire life under the constant pressure of being the heir to a declining noble family.

His life is marked by pain, violence, and secrets that threaten to unravel his world.

Since childhood, he has been the protector of his mother, Teruko, and his sister, Rindou, due to the violence their father, Takumi, inflicted on all members of the family.

He is truly a calm person, indifferent to appearances, and makes no effort to win anyone's favor—he is simply himself.

However, anger, a constant shadow in his life, arises from his helplessness in the face of his father's oppression and the fear of losing his family. He does everything possible to control himself and not beat his father to death for the sake of his sister and mother.

He has absolute trust in his sister, Rindou, whom he often overprotects, even though he knows she is more than capable of defending herself.

The greatest secret between the Haitani siblings is the existence of Rindou's magic, as she can control water and ice, sometimes freezing a bit of the ground beneath her feet when she gets nervous.

Ran does everything he can to keep their father from discovering this secret, as he knows Takumi would not hesitate to send Rindou away or even turn her over to the authorities to be dealt with for witchcraft.

His mother is a woman who, from his perspective, is very mysterious and hides many secrets. He knows there are many things about his mother that he doesn’t understand, but he is certain that she loves them more than anything and would never harm them.

The family faces enormous financial problems due to the vices of the family patriarch, Takumi. This gives Ran constant headaches, as his father’s incompetence as a leader has forced him to take his place in certain situations.

It was because of these financial problems that he met Hajime Kokonoi. A piece of advice from his friend Yasuhiro Muto led him to contact her, the one known as the "Genius of the Inui Family."

After speaking with her for advice on his financial troubles, they managed to establish a small friendship that, for him, is turning into something more.

A part of him wants to be with her freely, but his father’s existence is a huge wall separating them from having a serious relationship.

Magia Record Headcanon: How Memory Drops affected Nanaka

In the epilogue of Memory Drops, Nanaka travels back to the spot where Hanna and Mikoto died in order to find closure, and Kako secretly accompanies her there, where they discover the snowdrop blossoms that the two rogue uwasa girls had previously planted.

Every December after this incident, Nanaka goes to Blossom and buys Snowdrop seeds from Konomi. Wanting to make conversation, Konomi asks Nanaka about it, and she replies that she plants them to honor the memory of two people she used to know, and says they were thorns in her side and caused her no end of trouble. Konomi asks why she does this if she disliked them so much, and Nanaka replies "If I don't remember them, who will?"

She then travels to one of the parks outside the Daito Apartment Complex and plants the seeds, saying a prayer for Hanna and Mikoto. She may not have been able to bring them to justice or prevent their deaths, but she can at least do this much for them. Despite her insistence that this is solely her own responsibility, Nanaka's teammates join her so that she won't have to be alone. It's the only time they've ever seen her cry, though they won't insult her pride by drawing attention to it.

The realms are a tricky thing to map out physically in a way that is both accurate and also comprehendable. The trouble with them, many scholars and realm hoppers alike believe, is that they likely were never meant to be understood by mortal minds. But we try nonetheless.

Imagine Tomalyr as an orb at the very center of a much larger sphere. The miniscule core the other realms encase and orbit. Now imagine that larger sphere encasing Tomalyr. This sphere represents both The Eternal Orchard and the Ethereal realm. Both are infinite expanses, but I must ask you to temporarily ignore that fact, and also to imagine that Tomalyr is very close to the Ethereal Realm as opposed to being in the center of this sphere, as the Ethereal Realm runs parallel to Tomalyr.

On the Orchard, part of the sphere are three bubbles (smaller realms directly attached to the Orchard itself, governed by separate beings but still connected by The Path), one is Faewood, one is the Cat Trees, and the other the Bloodfields. Beneath Death's Door (the Ethereal Realm), but not quite touching Tomalyr, are 2 other bubbles, the Halls of Fate and the Labyrinth of Insanity (the labyrinth almost touches both Death's Door and Tomalyr).

Multiple other realms orbit The Orchard (but not the Ethereal Realm) and are accessible from it. The Fire Fields, Serpent's Cove, the Red Cathedral, and the Crystal Wastes (which contains the Tinkerer's Attic) can all be reached directly from the Orchard, like branches off a tree, but are not connected by The Path.

Similarly, the Hells, also known to us as Gehanemi, is a branch off of Death's Door that contains 2 of its own sub-realms, the War Room and the Executioner's Chamber. It notably does not connect to The Orchard, only to the Ethereal realm.

Assuming you have not yet gone mad attempting to imagine the strange contraption that would have to be made in order to properly visualize the realms thus far, we must now further complicate things by adding yet another sphere. This sphere, which encapsulates all the others, represents both Celestria (the astral realm) and Aphroskaia. While separate realms, much like the Orchard and Death's Door, they are connected to one another, 2 halves of one whole, so to speak. Thankfully, no sub-realms so far appear to attach to either.

If this wasn't enough, I must now ask that you take this collection of spheres we've made and add another around it, but violently break this one and then attempt to rebuild it, but poorly so that it does not connect all the way around and is actually a mix of 2 different metals now haphazardly interwoven. This is Kushiro, Light and Darkness broken and interlocking together. What should be two realms are forcibly one, and there are holes in it where one can fall beyond its bounds.

And now you must be thinking that surely this is it, and it nearly is, but now is when truly most give up on trying to understand. You must now acknowledge the 2 final realms, Magia and Abyss. Magia is everything tangible in the collection of spheres, it is the weave itself, and Abyss is nearly every bit of empty space in and around it. Abyss is almost everything that is nothing. I say nearly because there is, around every sphere, a small barrier of intangibility that manages to connect them all. This is the Space Between as we Realm Hoppers call it, and we know very little of it other than to jot fall into it. None have ever returned from the space between.

It is rumored that somewhere within all of this, there is one final realm that connects them all together; a domain ruled by none, referred to as Haven's Rest. We do not know where it is in relation to all other realms, merely that it does exist and the gods desperately want to keep us Realm Hoppers out of it. But we are mortals. And therefore, we try nonetheless.
