2024 Favorite Reads
I gave eight books the highest rating I could on Goodreads (alongside paragraphs of rambling praise in my reviews). All were absolutely wonderful books, but I didn't want this post to be a ten thousand lines long, and so... here were my top three favorite reads from this year.
Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananthan
A book about growing up during the tragic 26-year civil war in Sri Lanka, and what it means to live in a time of racial tension and relentless violence.
I spent about 40% of the book ugly crying and the other 60% in a trance. Ganeshananthan's prose is magical. Though I should've known going in that this would destroy me. Any book starting like this is sure to be incredible ->
I recently sent a letter to a terrorist I used to know. He lives near me, here in New York City, and when I opened the envelope and slid in the note that said I would like to come and see you, I thought of how much he had always required of me and how little I had ever asked of him. Even when I was growing up in Sri Lanka, before I had ever heard the word "terrorist", I knew that if a certain kind of person wanted something done, I should comply without asking too many questions. I met a lot of these sorts of people when I was younger because I used to be what you would call a terrorist myself.
The Coin by Yasmin Zaher
A wealthy, young Palestinian woman moves to New York City to fulfill her dead mother's last wishes: to live and thrive in the US. Instead, she slowly goes insane in the heart of the American empire.
When I discussed this book with my cousin, she drew a lot of parallels to Moshfegh's My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Probably because The Coin's narrator is a privileged, cruel, and funny woman that constantly dissociates from reality and is always horny.
I argued that both the books and narrators are very different. The trauma isn't localized. This is about a woman trying to cling to her beloved family's last wishes despite the contradictions of her values against those of the American urban elites. She knows of the horrors of the world, but what right does she have to criticize the neoliberal machine when she is one of its beneficiaries?
Besides, if her dear mother wanted her to live this life despite everything the US has done to their people, then...???? surely all is fine?????????
That fall, Vetements erected a massive pile of clothes in the center of Saks. The big pile was mostly jersey and denim, in all the colors I despised: faded black, army green, sports orange, fire-extinguisher red. It was a big pile of rags, like soccer-mom laundry, a monument for mass consumption. I really admired this brand, even though I didn't own anything from there, it was the opposite of my taste. Those brilliant Georgian designers were like the Banksy of fashion, they sold sweatshop hoodies for thousands of dollars, because the young and ultrarich wanted to look like the working class. The slogan was Ugly Is Beautiful. Of course, it's very cruel, but it's a reflection of the truth, isn't it, that the truth is ugly. I used to think that if people saw the real face of wickedness, not the mask, then they would revolt. I used to be a proponent of transparency. When Netanyahu and Trump were elected I thought those were the good days, because the truth had come to light. But it seemed not only that the truth was ugly, but that ugly was beautiful. The people adore the monster, the rich want to look poor.
If I Survive You by Jonathan Escoffery
A series of short stories centered around a young man's coming of age after his parents flee to the US to escape political violence in Kingston, Jamaica.
Despite he and his family's best intentions to fit in and 'survive', they're quickly kicked down by the cruelty and ruthlessness of a capitalistic, race-obsessed society.
It is a very bleak subject-matter, made even more heart-wrenching because Escoffery's narrator covers the events of his life with gracious humor and endearing persistence.
Also, I love that it has second-person narration.
Your Chinese American friend, Caitlyn, confides in you that she feels White. "What does Whiteness feel like?" you ask her. "I imagine it's like walking barefoot on a shag rug." "Oh, I forgot," Caitlyn says. "You must hate White people." "Why should I hate White people? I moved all the way to the Midwest to discover White people." "I just mean that people expect me to have some kind of minority perspective on things. Like I'm supposed to be the ambassador for Chineseness. My Mom and Dad are the only Chinese people I know. Plus we're so well off. I guess I feel too privileged not to be White." "That must be difficult," you say. "I know how this must sound, especially to you, but that doesn't change the way I feel. You wouldn't understand. How could you?" "It sounds like you'd prefer if people treated you less like a generalization and more like a human being. Like how White people treat White people." She bites her lip cautiously, then says, "Right." "And your outward appearance is the only thing preventing this from becoming a reality." "Exactly!" she says. "I know what you're feeling," you say. "And I don't think it's Whiteness."

The History of Duffel Bags: From Military Use to Fashion
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/abe6b6a3907d2ab733f949c838f695a7/826ded32cb39bc0b-68/s400x600/7524ef597bbc04e57d919ff205eab557ef7963e5.jpg)
In recent times when hand luggage prices have continued to soar, the humble duffel bag stands as a testament to practical, affordable, and versatile travel gear. From its military origins to its current status as a fashion statement, the duffel bag has evolved significantly while maintaining its core functionality.
Origins in Belgium
The story of the duffel bag begins in the small town of Duffel, Belgium, located in the province of Antwerp. In the late 17th century, this town became famous for producing a thick, sturdy wool cloth that would later be known as duffel fabric. This material's durability and weather-resistant properties made it ideal for creating robust bags that could withstand harsh conditions.
Military Adoption and Evolution
The duffel bag's travels to widespread use began during World War I when military forces recognised its potential as standard-issue gear. The cylindrical shape and simple design made it perfect for soldiers to carry their equipment and personal belongings. The British Royal Navy was among the first to adopt these bags, followed by other military forces worldwide.
During World War II, the duffel bag became synonymous with military service. American soldiers, in particular, were issued olive drab or navy-blue duffel bags, which they used to transport everything from uniforms to ammunition. These military-issue bags were characterised by their sturdy construction, reinforced handles, and considerable carrying capacity.
Post-War Popularity and Civilian Adoption
After World War II, surplus military duffel bags found their way into civilian life as veterans returned home with their trusted gear. The bags' practicality and durability appealed to the general public, leading to increased civilian production. This transition marked the beginning of the duffel bag's journey from military equipment to everyday luggage.
Global Spread and Manufacturing
The popularity of duffel bags spread globally, with manufacturing hubs emerging in various regions. For instance, duffel bags in Sri Lanka became a significant part of the country's textile and luggage manufacturing industry, contributing to the local economy and establishing the nation as a key player in bag production.
Modern Design and Innovation
The late 20th century saw significant innovations in duffel bag design. Manufacturers began experimenting with different materials, including nylon, canvas, and synthetic blends. New features were added, such as wheels, compartments, and waterproof linings. Luggage accessories in Sri Lanka and other manufacturing centres evolved to complement these new designs, offering everything from organisational inserts to protective covers.
Fashion Evolution
The 1980s and 1990s marked a turning point in the duffel bag's history. Major fashion brands began producing their own versions, transforming the utilitarian bag into a style statement. Luxury fashion houses introduced high-end duffel bags made from premium materials like leather and designer fabrics, elevating the humble bag to a status symbol.
Contemporary Usage and Maintenance
Today, duffel bags serve various purposes, from gym bags to weekend getaway luggage. Their continued popularity has led to the emergence of specialised luggage repair shops that cater to maintaining and restoring these versatile bags. These repair services have become essential in extending the lifespan of both vintage and modern duffel bags.
Sports and Athletics
The sporting world has embraced the duffel bag as essential equipment. Athletes across disciplines rely on these bags to transport their gear, leading to sport-specific designs with features like ventilated compartments for shoes and wet clothing. Major sports brands have developed their own signature duffel bag lines, incorporating innovative materials and ergonomic designs.
Environmental Considerations
In recent years, the duffel bag industry has responded to environmental concerns by incorporating sustainable materials and production methods. Manufacturers are now producing eco-friendly versions using recycled materials, organic fabrics, and environmentally conscious production processes. This shift reflects the growing awareness of sustainability in the fashion and luggage industries.
Cultural Impact
The duffel bag has evolved from a functional item into a cultural icon, symbolising travel, adventure, and military service. It is simple, durable design has been featured in films and literature, often representing journeys or the rugged lifestyle of soldiers. In pop culture, duffel bags are frequently associated with heist movies, adding an element of suspense and intrigue.
Beyond its symbolic meanings, the duffel bag has influenced fashion, with luxury brands offering high-end versions, and has become a staple in sports and fitness. Its versatility also makes it a go-to for everyday use, from gym sessions to weekend trips. As bag makers continue to innovate with sustainable materials and modern designs, the duffel bag remains a timeless blend of style and functionality, embraced by generations.
Future Prospects
As we look to the future, the duffel bag continues to evolve. Smart features like GPS tracking, built-in charging ports, and RFID protection are being incorporated into modern designs. However, the basic principle of the duffel bag – a simple, cylindrical bag with handles and a shoulder strap – remains unchanged, proving that some designs are truly timeless.
The history of the duffel bag demonstrates how a simple military item can transform into a versatile piece of luggage that serves both practical and fashion purposes. From its Belgian origins to its current status as a global fashion accessory, the duffel bag's journey reflects broader changes in society, technology, and consumer preferences. As we continue to travel and seek practical solutions for carrying our belongings, the duffel bag remains a reliable companion, adapting to our changing needs while maintaining its fundamental appeal.

Interview with Teruki Uchise of 14th Addiction Loaded Fashion Magazine Vol. 6 (2014) English Translation:
Page 1 Born in 1971 in Osaka Prefecture. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States alone and then moved to Mexico. Based on the know-how gained locally, he established KMRii, a brand that sells handmade accessories. Established "14th Addiction" in 2007. Without being bound by established theories or preconceived notions, he creates products based on the experiences he gained from his own travels and his own unique values. "We have an atelier in Bali, and all products are handmade by local craftsmen." The brand 14th Addiction offers leather items and other products that seem to have a life of their own. The designer, Mr. Teruki, has a unique background among many fashion designers.
"I had a strong desire to go overseas since I was in junior high school, and it was influenced by the music, movies, and novels that I liked and was exposed to at the time. In particular, the book "Exiles" (by Robert Harris) had a big influence on me and made a strong impression on me. I left Japan as soon as I turned 18 and went to America to find myself. I spent a few years there, but I didn't really like it, so I went to Mexico."
A foreign land with a bad security situation. Gangsters, drug dealers, cult groups, etc. are sometimes in the news. In 1990, the young man in his 20s moved to Mexico on his own, and he didn't feel any particular fear. Instead, he thought, "If I'm going to live, this is the place."
"I'm from Osaka, so Mexico has a similar vibe to Osaka (laughs). When I started living in Mexico, something suddenly occurred to me. To begin with, Japanese people and Mexicans are different in size, and they might even pull out a gun. In a place like that, you can't win physically. So you have to win mentally. It's important to approach the other person without being wary as much as possible and have a heart-to-heart conversation. If you feel fear, the other person will definitely know, and you'll be looked down upon right away. That's the trick, or how to navigate the world, I learned in Mexico."
The thing he wanted most was survival skills. After that, at the age of 24, TERUKI's career as a designer began. He started making accessories by imitating the Mexican Indians he met there.
"Since I was a teenager, I wanted to acquire the ability to survive. Survival skills are the ability to survive in the ultimate situation of traveling around the world, where no one knows you or helps you. When exposed to such a situation, I always wondered, 'What can I do?' That's when I discovered accessory making, learned a lot, acquired the know-how, actually made things, and sold them on the street when they were finished. That's how I began my life."
Make and sell, make money, and move on to the next town. With the help of TERUKI's extraordinary survival skills, his skills were so impressive that even local colleagues in the industry respected him. Whenever they found a new technique or material, they would negotiate and trade know-how with other craftsmen. TERUKI's works were of such high quality that they commanded overwhelmingly high prices on the street accessory market at the time. "I was selling accessories near the resort town of Cancun, and during the Christmas season many tourists came from New York and other places. People from the film and music industries among them saw the things I made and said, 'Why are you selling in a place like this? You can go much further.' I remember that this gave me a lot of confidence and marked a turning point for me." Page 2 His only source of inspiration was his own travel experiences. After that, he continued to travel around the world, visiting America, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Holland, England, Germany, France, Spain, Australia, etc. In 2000, he launched the accessory brand "KMRii" and established an atelier in Bali in the same year. In his atelier in Bali, he created an environment where all production processes could be carried out, from production to the distribution system for overseas shipments. After that, he approached music festivals in various European countries and built a network with overseas artists. In 2004, he also produced a leather jacket for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. In 2006, he handed over "KMRii" to a friend who had been with him since the company's launch, and in 2007, he established the men's brand "14th Addiction" and the women's brand "Catorce", which mainly focus on clothing.
"I didn't intend to start a fashion brand, but I made a few leather jackets, which were very well received, and the brand was born naturally from that. I don't feel like I'm in the fashion business at all, I just incorporate the inspiration I get from my travel experiences into my clothes. I project the people I meet on my travels, the scenery I see, and the messages I feel at each moment. My way of expression happens to be making clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories, so I definitely put my spirit into each and every piece."
The theme of this season is "Eternal Voyager." TERUKI has returned to his roots and created a powerful lineup by tracing his memories of his own travels. At the collection held in Tokyo recently, close friends of his, musician MIYAV- and director Takashi Tamura (Drum Can), also supported the show, adding a touch of glamour.
"I didn't go to fashion school or study fashion, but the experiences and knowledge I gained from traveling alone to unfamiliar places have really helped me. I don't want to get stuck in a mold in the pursuit of individuality, but rather, I want to break the mold and go all out! That's my message. I would be happy if we could give people who come into contact with our work a little nudge in the direction of wear it. I would like to continue making things like that."

Love is ALL You Need!
MIRACLE MOMENT®
“There's nothin' you can do that can't be done
Nothin' you can sing that can't be sung…All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.” John Lennon/Paul McCartney/The Beatles
A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
For the Super Bowl this year, the NFL changed the quote written on one end zone from “End Racism” to “Choose Love.” With all the hatred, violence, fear, and, yes, racism in our world today, choosing love is the perfect refrain. Besides being Black History Month, celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans, it is also the month of love. Valentine’s Day on February 14th honors relationships, love, gratitude, and togetherness. Besides communicating our love for another person, we can also express our love and gratitude to organizations making a difference in the world. Whether you support food banks, animal shelters, or literacy nonprofits like Be the Star You Are!®, this is a great month to build a love connection.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) recently reported that the percentage of eighth graders who have “below basic” reading skills is the largest it has been in the exam’s three-decade history–33 percent. At 40 percent, the percentage of fourth graders at “below basic” is the largest in 20 years. Math had a bit more progress, but not enough to offset losses from the pandemic. These statistics indicate that our educational system has work to do to encourage reading and writing.
Our dedicated volunteers, Book Review Coordinator, Stephanie Cogeos, and our Digital Media Coordinator, Robert Fernandez, are diligently working to move book reviews from a website )that will be discontinued in March to https://www.bethestaryouare.org/book-reviews. You will find honest, peer-to-peer reviews of numerous books to help you find a book to enjoy. Up your reading skills and fall in love with books.
At our Amazon Store, you’ll discover a variety of brand-new books at the lowest prices and if you want autographed copies of our signature books, plus extra goodies, visit our Online Store.
I leave you with my StarStyle®- Be the Star You Are!® radio broadcast sign-off: “Remember…Love always wins. Kindness always prevails. And smiles will keep you happy!”
The Beatles were right on! Love IS all you need!
Have a loving Valentine’s Day.
With gratitude,
Cynthia Brian

HELLO FROM A VOLUNTEER IN SRI LANKA
by Sarani Heiyantuduwa
First of all, I would like to say “hi” to all the members of BTYSA and I wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year ahead. The new year in Sri Lanka has been pretty amazing so far, especially compared to 2022 when we faced a major economic downfall. It seems like we have recovered from it but I am not someone with a good understanding of how the economy works so I can’t say it is completely gone. Tourism in Sri Lanka has been thriving in recent years since after the pandemic people started to travel more. We also got a new president who has never been in power before. Therefore, the citizens are starting the new year with lots of hope. Being a book reviewer for Be the Star You Are is a big milestone in my life as now I can make connections with people outside of my country. English is my second language so this opportunity has brought me good luck in many ways. I can improve my language skills and broaden my knowledge while serving. I am very honored to be a part of this supportive community of Be the Star You Are!®
Volunteer Sarani Heiyantuduwa, is an undergraduate at the University of Sri Jayewardenapura , Sri Lanka. Her biggest passion is Biological Science, along with art. She explores her graphic designing skills by contributing to various projects at the University. Her ultimate goal is to be a molecular scientist.
PEACE BEGINS WITH A SMILE
by Nandini Ghata
With various current conflicts in society on both global and local levels, there is a need for people to understand each other's struggles. Opposing opinions and a clash of ideals contribute to these disagreements. Therefore, it is important to empathize, connect, and put ourselves in one another’s shoes to better appreciate different viewpoints. Whether small dilemmas or larger difficulties, there are numerous methods to forge a path toward reconciliation. As once famously mentioned by Mother Teresa, “Peace begins with a smile”. By providing love and even small gestures of peace, we can both offer kindness and increase our own happiness. Giving back and giving forward can help contribute towards personal satisfaction while encouraging others to do the same. One action, no matter how small, has the ability to impact others in a monumental and positive way. Nandini Ghata is a 10th Grader who enjoys reading, writing, and music. She volunteers for Be the Star You Are!® and recently was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
SPOTLIGHT ON VOLUNTEER, ROBERT FERNANDEZ
Be the Star You Are!® is grateful to our Digital Media Coordinator, Robert Fernandez of Celador Media. Robert has been working with BTSYA to transfer book reviews from our BTSYA.org platform to our BetheStarYouAre.org website. We are merging the two websites beginning in March to streamline our messages of literacy and positive media, providing one website with all our resources. With his company, Celador Media, Robert provides numerous services for new or existing websites, including website services (website design & development), search engine optimization (SEO), and digital marketing (Google Ads). Whether you’re a small business just getting started or an established company looking to revamp your look, Celador Media’s goal is always simple – to help grow your business. BTSYA is thrilled with Robert’s continued volunteerism. He also writes great book reviews! Check out the website at https://celadormedia.com/
KINDNESS AROUND THE WORLD
by Karen Kitchel
While traveling, it’s wonderful to see how kind people can be to each other around the world. I was pleasantly surprised to spot a sign that read "Be Kind" at a resort in Aruba. Everywhere we went, there were individuals committed to making our day even better.
During a mission trip to Guatemala, my husband was a member of a team that built a school in a remote area. The local community was incredibly grateful for their efforts. Although she didn’t have any money, an elderly woman presented a bowl of bananas—grown in her own garden—as a heartfelt gift of thanks to the group’s leader.
Kindness happens all around the world!
Karen Kitchel is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, as a gift for every kindergarten student where she is a volunteer teacher. www.scatteringkindness.com You can read more about Karen’s adoption story in the book Be the Star You Are! Millennials To Boomers.
