gruber doesnt die, but him and herbert still go to arkham for reasons (??research opportunity??funding??being removed from zurich for Crimes???). dan's job in reani is vague as 'driving' which im going to say is 'delivery'. i think herbert-the-lab-assistant who is moderately better adjusted should order stupid shit to see his cute delivery boy. but of course all of these deliveries are Normal and Necessary.

the things herbert orders are, of course, not normal, because he's still doing mad science, just slightly less blood-thirsty (20 live rats. a chainsaw. blood. pharmacy orders. live frogs, to compare amphibians to mammals. lab glass. thirty feet of towing rope.)

highlights include:

herbert trying to lure dan into conversation by offering him home-made lemonade. the lemonade is horrible. it's citric acid meant for descaling tools mixed with sugar packets from a diner and some water. but herbert put his entire heart and pussy into it, and possible some reagent as well.

dan calls herbert 'little guy' once and herbert throws a fit and decides that the services are No Longer Needed

herbert milking a mild injury from an experiment (like a twisted ankle) because dan comes in to help him out.

herbert asking arond for a local drug dealer to source the amphetamines for the reagent and instead getting Dan The Weed Guy who only sells dirt and freaks out the second herbert asks for sth harder.

i can't imagine herbert actually believed he could make someone even remotely similar to meg. his field of study when he was still a remotely respectable scientist was neurology (and iirc somwthing to do w brain death)

something about him proposing such an uncharacteristically unscientific concept just to keep dan from leaving him rlly scratches an itch in my brain
