At Tony's previous comment, the Spiderling just shakes his head, clearly bashful. "Well, I might be a little better at school than most people but that's only because I have already read through all the textbooks for this year and senior year and some of the college books for that one Materials Science course when I was trying to figure out my netting, oh and that one course on Physical Chemistry at Northwestern was really interesting and I only found the lectures online by accident and that was so interesting and the professor is a Nobel Price winner, how cool is that?!" The enthusiasm is definitely back at full force. Tony is getting the feeling that it would take quite a bit of effort to bring down the Spiderling's mood for any amount of time. And as the kid babbles on about the college courses he has stumbled across - clearly having forgotten that he is supposedly trying to tell Tony how he isn't a genius - Tony resolves to do his best to protect this pure hearted enthusiasm for all things life and learning as best he can. Because Tony remembers that time of his own life. Remembers what it was like to be interested in everything, to want to learn everything in every single field of study, when everything seemed fascinating. When he had not yet picked a particular field to focus on. And he also remembers how frustrating it had been to always have to slow down for everyone around him simply because no one could understand his babbling and lightning quick changes of topic. Remembers how offended his professors had gotten when he started meshing discoveries and principles from separate fields, completely irreverent of 'established' practices. When he debunked theories in chemistry by applying established principles of quantum mechanics. Or used complex decade-old mathematics from some unknown Russian guy to tear apart supposed revolutionary discoveries in physics. Thinking outside the box is a state of being for Tony and he has always loved combining different fields to come up with entirely new things to learn. It was the reason why he had finally decided to focus primarily on one of the more interdisciplinary fields, electrical engineering. But these days, people tend to only remember Tony's accomplishments in engineering and programming. They like to ignore that he not only holds three PhDs but also a truly absurd number of Master degrees in completely unrelated fields. And that's without even mentioning all the subjects he has simply read up on in the years after. Tony is constantly educating himself about new things, things he wants to know, to learn, to study. People don't like to hear him so much allude to his genius but Tony doesn't get into entirely new fields of study because he wants to show up others, but simply because he needs to gather new knowledge. Constantly. He would die of boredom if he had nothing to keep his brain busy with. But it still took him years to realize that most people didn't in fact enjoy being shown up by a fresh-faced kid who had surpassed them in their chosen field within 24 hours of deciding to start reading up on it. And his unconventional approach of mixing sciences had especially not gained him any favors at MIT, because people who consider themselves smart apparently get quite offended when someone clearly smarter comes along. And by the time any of them could finally bring themselves to actually have a real scientific debate with Tony, he more often than not had long since left their particular field behind, having already switched to an entirely unrelated area of interest. Only to repeat the process. It had driven every single science-minded person at MIT who came in contact with him insane. Tony had probably been the most disliked person in MIT's history. That isn't to say that his fellow students and the professors hadn't used Tony's revelations in order to further their own standing in the scientific community. Of course without ever mentioning where their oh-so-revolutionary ideas had come from. His enthusiasm for all things science had blinded him to the fact that not everyone thought the entire goal was to learn, that humans - and even scientists - are truly selfish at heart. Tony had started hating college then. To be constantly put down by the people around him, only to find out later that they had then used his ideas to get published in scientific journals, taking all credit and not giving Tony the opportunity to join them in arguing their - or rather his - case with others. He had learned quickly to either keep his ideas to himself or to immediately smack a patent on it or to get it published before anyone else could. Once he started churning out scientific publications, Tony had suddenly and completely 'coincidentally' become very popular with his fellow scientists. Their sudden 'change of heart' had only made Tony despise them even more. But thankfully, that was also the time of his life when he had met his Rhodey bear. Rhodey who was more than willing to listen to Tony talk, who tried to keep up with him but didn't get offended when he couldn't. Who was interested in Tony's babbling and even in Tony himself. Rhodey who had made everything better. It had been an incredible release to finally have someone he could talk to and talk at. About his private life, his courses, his professors, his own inventions and discoveries and ideas. Yeah, he more than gets the Spiderling's enthusiasm right now.

“If you were in an accident, I wouldn’t stop for a beer.”/“If you were in an accident I wouldn’t stop for red lights.” - Surprising absolutely no one! This is honestly the most romantic way anyone has ever said “I love you” without saying the words to me. Like... it says SO MUCH about them and their love for each other. The way Josh is taken aback by it. The way she says it so casually. The way she says “yes, you’re better than my old boyfriend.” The way they look at each other, just for a moment, like they’re trying to telepathically say everything they want to say but can’t. It gives me chills. The way he struts around before that but is so soft when he realizes she was in an accident and this guy didn’t come get her right away, he’s just so concerned even though he KNOWS she’s okay. Ugh.

“You’re still here.”/“Yeah. I’m still here.” It’s the first one in action! He travels to GERMANY with the clothes on his back and a laptop and NOTHING ELSE TO SPEAK OF to be with her. He’s still coming off of the fact that she may have sustained some brain damage from the pulmonary embolism surgery, and he’s just so desperately in love with her, and she asked to see him before she went under ... and HIS FACE when she wakes up? God it’s just so much. The blanket thing, when he just gently sits on her bed. He deflects his feelings with a joke about schnitzel. It’s peak Josh Lyman. And HIS NAME BEING THE FIRST THING SHE SAYS WHEN SHE WAKES UP 😭

“You look amazing.” OKAY SO let’s talk about this. Josh clearly has come to the conclusion that he has caught feelings. The way he’s so frustrated with her for taking the fall for Jack’s quote (because she’s important too), the way he takes off his coat (to show his love for her), the way he is so eager to get her to come to the ball via a dramatic gesture (which if you remember is inspired by something she told him in a deleted scene re: Amy COME ON)... he’s just so blown away by her he stops and can’t think or process for a second and he tells her how good she looks. It’s incredible.

“I think you might find me valuable.” I love this so desperately. He can read her like a book. It’s not particularly SHIPPY in the sense that they’re not about to make out or anything (although I would argue there’s absolutely chemistry), but the way they interact already is so much. She convinces him, just like she does hundreds of other times, and the way she GRINS when he hands her the ID badge. (Yes, the jewelry line from the script book slays me.) It’s this life changing moment for the both of them neither of them knew was life changing. It’s fun to watch them meet. I really firmly believe they’re soulmates so it’s sort of fascinating to watch the universe shift as things begin for them.

“You wanna take a walk? Or... something?” Our girl can get it. Honestly, like the fact that they’re both aware that they’re attracted to each other and the fact that they can DO SOMETHING about it now? The way she’s trying to de-stress him in the middle of Election Day? The way his eyebrows just SHOOT UP when she says this. Plus it leads to my favorite Josh moment in this episode - “HAVE HER?!?” Its a joy to watch. It’s just a little awkward but it’s so fun because we’d been waiting for it and FINALLY they decide to go for it and ugh. Also they’re both just really attractive together and individually so. Fun to watch.

a/n: i am close to 1k and was thinking of doing an event but i know i’m gonna forget and it’s just not going to go well so i just wanna say THANK YOU to all you sweet sweet beings for following my mess of a blog! :)

Moonstone. Powdered porcupine quills. Powdered unicorn horn.

The three ingredients repeated themselves over and over in your head as you sat by yourself in the common room nearing two o’clock in the morning, the messy notebook spread open in front of you as your eyes tried to droop shut.

It was nearly impossible for you to focus on the fuzzy words, but you forced yourself to stay as awake as you possibly could so that tomorrow’s quiz would be a breeze. That’s why you were studying, wasn’t it?

Remus and Sirius had promised to help you out, but the two had trudged off to bed nearly an hour ago, practically already asleep. For two people who seemed so adamant on ‘all nighters’ they had gone to bed rather early, in your opinion. You quite missed their company — Remus more than Sirius — and wished you could at least have someone here to help keep your mind sharp.

But, here you were, all by your lonesome and wrapped in a scarlet and gold knitted blanket that your parents had made you, the crackling fireplace heating you up, and the words in front of you making you sleepy.

You couldn’t comprehend why no one else seemed stressed or even worked up about this quiz — exam, actually — which made studying it just that much more frustrating. You figured people would care about their marks and scores, right?

“The potion should result in a cool blue colour,” you mumbled to no one in particular, the words trying their best to etch into your brain, “A cool blue colour. Not to be mistaken with Draught of Peace which is a warm blue colour.”

You let out a quiet groan and rested your head against the back of the couch cushion. Potions class was never your strong suit, but you had found it fascinating. And, of course, hou didn’t want to seem like you were lost, so studying hours on end seemed to be the only passing solution here.

The large ticking clock on the wall told you it was five minutes past two o’clock, and the exam was at ten o’clock the next day. Only eight hours left for you to memorize every last word.

Eight hours.

As you glanced back down at the book, your eyes felt heavier than they were not a minute ago, and your head felt as if it were on a cloud. The room around you seemed to vanish down a long, long tunnel...

“D’you think if we poke her she’ll jump?”

“Sirius, that’s just rude.”

“C’mon, it’d be funny though. What if we poured pumpkin juice on her?”

“No, let’s just calmly wake her up.”

“You’re boring, Remus.”

Your eyes fluttered open to two overly familiar faces crouched in front of you. Remus, his hair messy and his eyes watching you cautiously, and Sirius with his signature smirk.

“Get out of my face,” you sat up, throwing the blanket off of and trying to figure out where you were. The Gryffindor common room felt very different when you were waking up in it.

The fire embers were burning low and the morning sunlight blazed through the windows, the room brighter than it had ever seemed before. The blanket was still comfortable draped over your body, warm and comforting, and the heavy textbook was still open on your lap with the page slightly crumpled as your hand rested upon it.

Suddenly, as if hit by a train once you noticed the book, you remembered, “Bloody hell, it’s the Potions quiz today.”

Remus chuckled, “Relax. It’s in, like, an hour.”

You threw the blanket off of your body and grabbed the book, shaking your head, “You don’t get it, Remus. I don’t know anything.”

“That can’t be true,” Remus furrowed his eyebrows at you.

Sirius pat you on the shoulder, sitting next to you on the couch and closing the book with a loud thump, “You’ll be fine. You just need to eat.”

So you let the two boys lead you down to the Great Hall, where the loud hustle and bustle of the early morning made it nearly impossible to focus on the jumble of words on the worn out pages in front of you. The book, although informative, was clearly written for someone who actually understood what the hell everything meant. And it was harder to understand anything when the ruckus around you made it difficult to even read said things.

It bothered you greatly that Remus — the person you considered your best friend — didn’t seem to care about the exam. Were you overreacting?

It wasn’t your fault, really. You took schoolwork very seriously and sometimes that meant overreacting. Over-studying. Over-planning. All of the above.

But, better to be safe than sorry — isn’t that the saying?

When the Great Hall crowd became dispersed, you knew that meant classes were beginning and you felt your nerves kick in at the thought. You shut the book rather loudly and followed Remus to the Potions classroom, no words being exchanged between the two of you — which you were thankful for, to be honest.

“You got this,” Remus flashed you a grin as you slowly walked into the class together, taking your usual seats in the middle. You didn’t like being too close, nor too far from the teacher. These seats were perfect.

“I don’t need false hope,” you groaned, resting your head on the table, “I need answers.”

He chuckled, “Sorry, you know me. I can’t cheat. But if this test goes wrong, I can tutor you.”

You lifted your head quickly, a bright red spot on your forehead from where it was previously pressed up against the wooden desk, “Wait, really? You’d do that?”

“Of course,” he smirked, running his hand through his hair in a stupidly attractive manner, “What are friends for?”

You flashed him a bright grin, “Oh, you’re the best, Remus.”

His cheeks turned slightly pink as he smiled back, lowering his head slightly as he flushed at the compliment. You felt your heart leap at his flustered state, unsure why the strange feeling decided to make its home in your chest.

You brushed it aside as the professor entered the class and handed out the quiz papers, making sure every student was silent and that no cheating would occur.

Within the first glance at the page, your heart sunk, all previous fluttery feelings gone. You had been so focused on remembering ingredients and potion colours that you forgot to study their purposes. The entire first page was asking about what each potion did and who they helped best. And you hadn’t even brushed on that subject during your late night study session.

Long story short, you were screwed.

You closed your eyes, thinking long and hard about each answer, writing down whatever felt right. It was always good to trust your gut instinct right?

In this case, it didn’t feel so right, but you went with it anyways.

What felt like two hours was only really thirty minutes, and the quiz was officially out of your hands. You felt ashamed handing it back — you knew your Professor would think you were a fool, a student who found excuses not to study. And that feeling was nagging you throughout the remainder of class.

“You don’t look so good,” Remus nudged your shoulder once you packed up your books, your entire body slouched and your lips curved downwards into a frown.

“I botched that so bad,” you groaned, tossing your head back and closing your book bag, throwing it over your shoulder, “I was too tired last night and didn’t study everything I wanted to.”

Empathetically, Remus wrapped his arm around your shoulder, guiding you out of the crowded class. You were too busy sulking to pay attention to the fact that Sirius, James and Peter weren’t even with you guys.

“I’ll help you,” Remus said, voice laced with confidence, “I don’t want you doubting your intelligence so I, Remus Lupin, appoint myself as your own personal tutor.”

“Can people self-appoint themselves that?” your face broke into a grin, his humorous antics thankfully distracting you from your disappointment, “You’re too much.”

“But you love me,” he ruffled your hair, removing his arm from around you and slipping his hand into his pocket.

You chuckled, shaking your head as your heart leapt in your chest, “I really do.”

“I failed.”

Your voice was weak and quiet as you sat down on the Gryffindor table bench during lunch the week after, your mood rather sour. You had been incredibly worked up that morning, knowing you’d be getting your test results. But now that you’d gotten them, you wanted nothing more than to go back in time where you didn’t have to deal with the reality of the failure.

Remus’ face fell and he placed his hand on your knee, “Ah, I’m sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t do so well either. I think this test was marked more strictly than they usually are.”

Though you appreciated the effort, it didn’t lift your spirits.

“I didn’t think I’d do bad enough to actually fail,” you sighed, slouching your shoulders and resting your elbows lazily on the table, “I’m mad at myself.”

“Hey,” Remus lifted his hand off of your knee and poked you in the shoulder, “Stop that. Seriously. Don’t put yourself down so much.”

“Hard not to,” you leaned forwards and rested your head on your hand, eyeing the food with a frown. Your appetite wasn’t present at the moment.

Remus snapped his fingers in front of your face, “I’m serious, Y/N. I’m here to help you, yeah? We’ll get through this. We’ll improve together. The next quiz won’t even stand a chance against us.”

You wanted to keep sulking, but his words brought a smile to your face. Remus had a way of cheering you up — him and his ways. Something about him.. you just couldn’t stay upset around him.

“Thanks,” you grinned, lifting your arm and poking him in the shoulder as he had done to you previously, “I do feel a little better.”

“Good!” he flashed you a toothy grin, his eyes brightening, “That’s always the intention.”

You stared at him for a good moment, the smile not leaving your face. His freckles seemed more visible than usual, his hair lighter and his eyelashes long against his cheeks each time he blinked. Though his hair was thin and brown, his eyelashes were thicker and darker — it was rather cute. His eyes had specks of green in them and, you had never really noticed before, they had some grey in them too.

You had to snap yourself out of the trance he left you in, unaware and unsure as to what caused it.

Had you just checked Remus out? No. Couldn’t be. He was your friend. Friend. Best friend.

You took a deep breath and began filling your plate, appetite suddenly back. You filled your stomach with chicken pot pie and potatoes, hoping that the faster you ate, the better you’d feel.

But nope.

Though your mind was off of your test, you somehow felt even worse. Remus was all you could focus on. His closeness, his kindness, his warmth, his smell.

“Ready for the afternoon?” Remus stuck his hand out to you as he stood up, shaking you from your weirdly romantic thoughts.

“What?” you blinked, “Oh — yeah, sorry.”

You shook your head and stood up, linking your hand with his as the two of you left the hall and took off towards your next class.

“No, no,” Remus shook his head, “You need to add this.”

You stared blankly down at the messy piece of parchment, nodding your head slowly, trying to remember which potion you guys had been talking about in the first place.

“Uh — which one again?” you asked sheepishly, your ears burning at the obvious fact that you weren’t paying attention, “Sorry.”

He let out a small laugh, placing his finger on the page in front of you, “This.”

You were glad that the library was quiet at this time of day, the cloudy weekend morning meaning most students would be choosing to start their day relaxing around in their pyjamas and drinking pumpkin juice.

You, however, while others students got to relax and spend the morning doing nothing, you had the great misfortune of being dragged out of the common room by an equally tired Remus.

“The library is empty in the morning,” he had said at your repeated groaning.

And he was right. The library was empty. The only sound you could hear was your quill scratching against your parchment and Remus’ whispered voice trying to teach you while respecting the library noise rules.

“What potion uses porcupine quills and peppermint sprigs?” he asked, resting his head on his hands and staring at you intently, his eyes focused on you and only you.

“Uh—,” you fought the urge to look down at your parchment notes, “Elixor to Induce Euphoria.”

He grinned, raising his hand to high five you, which you gladly accepted, “See! You got this!” You felt your face warm up at the contact and compliment.

“Next question,” he smirked, leaning even closer to you, “What would you say if I asked you to come to Hogsmeade for a drink?”

“I — what?”

As if the wind was knocked out of you, you couldn’t utter a single sound. Had you heard him right? There was no way.

“Do I need to repeat myself?” he chuckled.

But you still couldn’t find the words.

Yes, you had recently looked at Remus differently, but had it been a crush? It didn’t seem like it at first — but as you looked at him now, his face illuminated by the light outside and the way his hair stuck up in odd places, you realized you did like him.

You liked him. Him and his boisterous laugh, his nervous nail-biting habits, his love for poetry and snow. You loved how he’d always be there for you, ready to crack a corny joke when you were feeling down in the dumps. You loved how he’d always have a book recommendation and a long list of reasons why it would be worth the read. You loved how he always had the neatest handwriting, his notes providing you with bits of information you’d miss in class. How he’d always look forward to dessert because of how delicious he found the pumpkin pasties.

And all it took was him asking you out for you to realize you were falling for your best friend.

“I’d actually like that,” you nodded, aware that your cheeks were probably glowing but you were too giddy to care at the moment. Somehow, you felt as if this was right. There was no strangeness about him asking you — it somehow felt as if you had been waiting ages for him to do so.

“Thank Merlin,” he sighed, relaxing his entire body as his face lit up, “Next weekend?”

“Hm, can’t think of anything I’m doing,” you tapped your finger against your chin, eyebrows raised and your cheeks beginning to hurt from the bright smile you were sending his way. You couldn’t remember the last time you had been this giddy.

He leaned across the table and linked his hands in yours. You melted into the contact, using your elbow to push your parchment and quill out of the way so you could lean forwards without fear of ruining your notes or your sweater.

Safe to say, studying was now long forgotten.

TMNT Headcanon: “The future only belongs...”

Hi hi hi. *bounce* Soo, you know I couldn’t help myself and started headcanoning and head-writing as soon as “When Worlds Collide” was over, and I wrote this bit over the past week while writing other stuff, and it’s going to be a really long fic with actual science and characters wondering Hey yeah why is that a thing because heck off writers the fans may as well do better than you. Also my husband is like Donnie level nerd/geek for physics, chemistry, engineering, astrophysics, biology; and I have a habit of randomly asking him strange things that he randomly has the answers to. And generally when I come to him and the first thing out of my mouth is something like “So if a character has electrokinetic powers what sort of stuff could they do around the house?” I expect a realistic answer that takes two hours and includes a visual lesson on electrons and photons. Sooo yeah, here’s a sneak peek at a fic that is tentatively titled “Electric Youth” because I was a child in the 1980s, but it could change (if you don’t get the reference, try to guess) as the story happens. Also if you want, comment or PM me or PM me at FFnet especially if you know stuff about electric-powered superheroes.

Electric Youth (Part Four of “The Sunshine Child”)

It had could have been different, in that span of a few seconds.

“No! Wait a second, guys, wait! No no, WAIT! BISHOP, NO, NOT YET, LISTEN TO ME!”

And Utrom Bishop had paused. He had paused just long enough to see the electricity suck back into Michelangelo’s skin like water into sand.

Panting, Mikey had kept his hands raised, pleading, words stumbling over each other. “Just…just gimme a while, please. Look. Give the cannon to Donnie, okay? We-we’ll keep it in the lair, and if I start to overload we’ll use it, just please please don’t drain me right now, please, what if we still need these powers, come on…!”

And something apparently shifted in Utrom Bishop. His robot head twitched. He lowered the energy dampening cannon. “Very well. But you understand I must let the Council know.”

“Yeah, sure, tell them whatever! I promise, I’ll be good! I’ll learn to control it.” A massive breath of relief expelled from Mikey’s whole being. He was quiet, save for his loud breathing.

Raph had stopped smirking and was staring at his brother, whose eyes were still wide and huge.

Utrom Bishop hefted the large gun into Donnie’s hands, eyes narrowed. “Do you trust him?” he asked.

Don blinked. “Well, considering his excitement and his desperate promise to commit to controlling himself, I do trust him. Mikey has matured a lot.”

Bishop sighed. “Remember my warning. You do not want to lose him again.”

“O-of course not. Never.” And Donnie’s eyes widened. His fingers tightened against the white weapon, as the Salamdrian commander stepped forward.

Leonardo blinked at his ceiling, crossing his ankles and settling deeper into his pillow. It was still hard to sleep. That had happened. All of that had happened earlier. He could hear the threats of Newtralizer, he could hear Mikey’s sudden scream of agony as he was electrified and disintegrated mid-leap…

With a frustrated huff, Leonardo sat up and threw back the covers. Tea, damn it.

It was getting warmer as spring ended but the lair’s floor was cool on his bare feet as he walked to the kitchen. Tea.

He was heating the kettle and reaching for one of the calming herbal blends when he heard the scrape of a chair. It wouldn’t have alerted him, if not for what sounded like static shock and a whispered “Ow again, damn it.”

“Mikey?”

He turned around, and his little brother looked up almost guiltily, his toe still grinding into the floor and his finger still bouncing rapidly on the table countertop – the metal countertop. Leo blinked.

“S-shouldn’t you not be doing that?”

“M’tryin to figure out how,” Mikey said earnestly. Then Leo understood. Mikey had been randomly touching things, sliding his feet against things, waiting for the static shock to tell him what was safe. But what if nothing was…

Sighing, Leo walked over and gave his brother a one-armed hug. “I’ll admit, this is gonna be weird, Mikey. Are you sure you did the right thing in stopping Bishop?”

“Dude, are you even serious right now? Of course. I got this. I mean, I will. Get this. I said I would, didn’t I? I’m cool. I’m all good!”

Inwardly, Leo chuckled. Mikey trying to act smooth when everyone knew he wasn’t was always adorable. That was one of his real talents, calming down a situation with wit and strange banter until de-escalation.

“Don’t laugh at me, Leo, I’m really really trying this time.”

Sometimes he forgot just how empathic Mikey now was. “Sorry, little brother, it’s just…well, you’re my little brother. It’s not that I don’t believe you’ll be fine, I’m just always going to worry about you.”

Mikey grinned sleepily and nodded. The water boiled. Leo went and poured his tea.

“Hey,” Mikey said, “can you put a tea bag in a mug for me, since you’re there? With regular water? Actually, make it cold.”

Leo raised an eyeridge. “Okaay…”

He brought the mugs to the table and handed Mikey the cold, barely seeping tea. Mikey clutched it with both hands and stared at it. Slowly, a trickle of light blue electricity emerged from the skin of his hands and crawled toward his fingertips. Leo watched, fascinated. The static jumped from Mikey’s fingers to the porcelain, wrapped around it, and if Leo had blinked he would have missed the steam rising.

“Well,” he said, “That’s one way to practice.”

“It worked!” The grin Mikey gave him could have lit the room. “I did it! YES!” Happily, he sipped his tea, feet swinging, and Leo laughed.

Little things like this, he realized. Little tiny things like heating up a mug of water, not huge incredible things like…like battling an elecrokinetic reptile man or blowing up bits of a bug alien spaceship. Or creating a force field to hold back an explosion inside of a damaged bug alien spaceship. If he weren’t living electricity, able to move literally like lightning, he wouldn’t even be here.

That was the other thing. And no matter how many times Raph and April and Karai had gone over it, Leo still wasn’t sure. There had been a visible surge in electrical energy from all over the alley, they said, and then it all just…gathered and coalesced and…BOOM. And then there had been a Mikey from the ground up, from the skeleton up, screaming into existence and suddenly ready to run, like a newborn wild creature. There had been no fatigue, no confusion, just there and whole as if he had never been gone. That was what Donnie had been mumbling about on the way back to the lair, after dropping Mona Lisa and Karai off at the Mutanimals’ warehouse. Granted, Don himself had been in such shock over Mikey making such a grand entrance that he had somehow forgotten Mikey was alive (had brought himself back to life?) and couldn’t stop shaking his head while they waited for Raphael to say goodbye to Y’Gythgba (and it wasn’t like he wouldn’t see her again, but then Leo remembered how Karai had nudged him). It didn’t make sense, none of it made sense, April had reached out to Mikey had had to pull back as if electrocuted, she could barely sense him under the crackling strangeness and the darkness of it all.

“Leo, yours is getting cold,” and he blinked, remembering to drink his tea while watching Mikey stim and fidget and carefully spin his mug while murmuring, “I did it, I’m the best, I’m awesome” under his breath.

It was giving Leo room to think. The way he could move. The sheer ability to turn into energy and move in a blink, was that going to cause problems? It had saved him when he jumped from Dregg’s exploding ship. But was it costing him anything? Could he be in pain? April had said that Bishop’s warning of a burn out killing Mikey seemed extremely serious, but how well did Bishop know the turtles’ mutations or Newtralizer’s powers? And this was Michelangelo they were talking about. He had lived through some bizarre things. And, Leo mused, he had this odd talent for…attracting weirdness. He was just good at supernatural things. The demodragon seal, for one, they still hadn’t figured that out. Kavaxas may have been woefully out of touch by assuming the seal couldn’t be fixed (and with chewing gum for that matter) but perhaps Mikey just…had that aura. And it made sense, Leo decided, since after Splinter’s death Mikey had gotten spiritually very powerful, enough to become nearly telepathic. This, though, was nothing like that. This was physical actual energy. And it still affected Mikey; he had still had to avoid being shocked by Newtralizer. Donnie said he was going to test that; could Mikey eventually absorb external electric shocks, did he create his own energy or did he draw it from the environment, and where in his brain did he instinctively control his energy. Leo had filtered out the longer words, already exhausted.

And now he just couldn’t sleep, and now he was watching Mikey play with raw electricity like a toy, and—

“Mikey, what are you doing?”

Leo nearly inhaled tea and looked up.

Donatello was standing at the table, arms folded. Mikey had apparently been playing with the water, literally playing with it, Leo watched as plumes of steam danced across the table. Mikey’s face had the frozen whoops face of a child caught with a cookie. A grin stretched across his face, his eyes still wide and innocent as he looked up at Donnie.

“Heeeey, Dee. How’s it going?”

“Michael…” and Leo immediately ducked his head so he wouldn’t laugh; Don only used that form of their little brother’s name when he was really irritated, “…what did I tell you when we got home earlier?”

“Thaaat I wasn’t allowed to perform any electricity tricks and I was supposed to wake you up if I felt like my powers were overloading and I needed a release?”

Really? Leo frowned. He didn’t remember that conversation.

“And what are you doing?”

“Yeah, but, Leo started making tea and…”

“Leo, can’t you sleep?” And Donnie turned worried eyes to Leo, who straightened and looked nonchalant as he could. “Actually, I couldn’t sleep. Too wired up from what happened today.”

“Heh,” Mikey giggled under his breath. “Wired. Heh.” And Leo rolled his eyes, even as he smiled. Well, it was true.

“You wanna see wired, I was wired, I was wired like a boss and it--”

“Mikey…” and Donnie sounded like a disgruntled yet resigned parent.

“Sorry, Dee, I couldn’t help it.” And Mikey sounded exactly like a chastised, actually apologetic, hyperactive child. Leo inwardly slapped himself; he was obviously loopy.

“And I decided to make tea,” Leo said, as if he were a hand slapping against the table ending whatever standoff between parent child. “And I heard Mikey, uh, experimenting with his powers. He asked if I could put a teabag in cold water, and then he heated it up. And he was really proud of himself, Donnie, I--”

“Wow, actually, that sounds awesome,” Don interjected. He sat down. “I wouldn’t mind seeing that.”

“Really?” Mikey’s smile turned megawatt. Ugh, puns, Leo thought, there will be an overabundance of energy puns in this house forever. He smiled to himself. It would be worth it if they really did find a way to control Mikey’s powers.

Remus, originating from Latin, means Unknown. People always questioned that meaning, should it occur to them, because how could a boy like Remus be so unknown – what was unknown about him? Each and every student in Hogwarts used to know him the way he was, he wasn’t foreign – the smart Gryffindor Prefect, the boy with the book stuck in his nose and a patient temper which didn’t really peak to aggression often. He was considered predictable, a charted territory. But was he really? So many people claimed how much they knew Remus John Lupin when in reality they didn’t. Hell, even he himself didn’t know himself fully. It wasn’t only because of his lycanthropy, though that was a big part of it – how could one know himself when there was a second creature living in him, uncontrollable and separate from his true self? Perhaps if Remus remained unknown it would be safer for everyone.

REASON FOR CHOSEN CHARACTER

Oh my GOD, where do I start? Alright, I chose Remus Lupin because of the many nuances there are to him. I guess that is the main reason for which I’m fascinated by him because with his lycanthropy condition, his character traits become very much balanced when it comes to flaws and virtues and I think that this is super interesting! Remus Lupin is my definition of a person who has been through TOO much shit from start to end and still remained good, righteous, level-headed. His childhood lasted for about four years before he was slapped to the face with an unbearable curse and for someone to live such a long life only to lose it just at the door of happiness and in a cause so selfless fascinates me to no end.

One of the main reasons I chose Remus for was because of the Marauders. I have always believed that if it weren’t for them, he would not be the same Remus that we see in canon or in my interpretation. As a small child, Remus was very cheerful and very much open to the world around him. His parents gave him enough love and support even if he couldn’t even realize what the world truly was like. In my opinion, Remus was a child who grew so much faster and so much harder than the rest of the children, not only because of the bite, but also because of the psychological trauma settled in his brain if not for eternity. All the monthly pain, torture, depression, weakness; the constant migrations from town to town because it was too hard to keep up with rumors in his native town; all the fear that had settled in his mind, that nobody loved him – it took a toll. So, from this happy child he became a closed person who feared life instead of enjoying it.

Many people helped him – his family, healers, wizards and witches who were willing to help free of cost, alas nothing could ease the pain settled in his heart. When he went to Hogwarts, he believed that despite Dumbeldore’s help he would never be able to have a life. Remus saw the laughing in the common room; the chatter and the happy dancing in the Great Hall; the normal lives everyone led – yet he was a monster stuck in a human body ready to burst out. So, when James, Sirius and later, Peter came around he started forgetting about the entire infection step by step. It took the boy years to overcome this fear of life and in my mind, the Marauders helped him enjoy life rather than fight against it. From the fact that they were so supportive that they became animagi to the incredible plans of keeping his secret a secret – Remus opened his shell and through the course of his Hogwarts experience was able to make the Marauders and his own skills define who he was, not his condition.

I think that with Remus, there is an incredibly complicated arch that we can see in terms of development – he began as a normal half-blood who then got crushed underneath the fists of a predator. Then he continued going down, down, and down, struggling to breathe under all of his childish yet adult emotions and pain until he saw the light in the tunnel and he was able to reach that light and grasp for dear life. In canon, we see that the future takes that light away and smashes it again with ups and downs that lead to his demise. In no way do I think that his life arch is happy; but I do think that it would’ve been worse if it weren’t for the Marauders.

I believe that Remus also has a specific arch when it comes to his development as a person when it comes to my interpretation – he starts off as a happy baby, then progresses downwards to somewhat of an intense depression, and up until the first wizarding war we can see his character opening and becoming more outwards instead of inwards ( maybe not too much, but it still is something ). He started to socialize, he started to see the world not as something he had to protect himself from but something he should celebrate. Then gradually, he loses his friends and he becomes more mature with victims of the war and the atrocities he had to witness – thus leading us to canon Remus who is one of my most favorite figures in the HP verse not because of his despair but because of his painful maturity, one that came with so much losses.

My interpretation of the eighteen years old Remus shows us the character in a light that I think the fandom neglects and overlooks. My Remus is a young adult who believes in the light at the end of the tunnel – because he had grasped it once and he can do it again. The war is cruel and there are victims and he hates it but he is also very active in the movement of the Order of the Phoenix. He is reasonable, levelheaded and not as impulsive as Sirius or James but definitely not reserved, shy and awkward. My Lupin likes to have fun and tries not to make his lycanthropy define him. Despite that, when frustrated he is also aggressive, a trait which I believe comes from the werewolf curse running in his veins but that’s something very rare for him to show. It usually comes in waves of frustration or sadness and an extremely low amount of people are truly able to help him through it. Regardless, he is kind and selfless, an epitome of what a good person should be in such trying times..

That’s why I chose Remus – I want to peak in all these nuances and reasons of why he is who he is.

When it comes to romance he usually takes an initiative after he knows the person well enough and is sure that something might spark from it, going into it with one in mind. + Reasonable – based on or using good judgment and therefore fair and practical; Remus has always been the conscience of the Marauders. Usually tackling on the plans and participating in the pranks which didn’t had the potential to kill him, or worse, face him with McGonagall, Lupin always tried to find the reason behind everything and made his decisions based on his good judgement. Unlike the impulsive pranksters among his friends, he often thought for more than just the impact of his actions; he also considered the repercussions. + Strong – Remus was strong, not only physically but also mentally. For fourteen years he has been enduring the transformation from a human to a wolf and those primal instincts kept him fit and in shape. Mentally, Lupin has always shown calmness in frightening or stressful situations, thus showing a certain amount of levelheadedness and calmness. - Aggressive – When confused to no end or extremely sad, Remus tends to outburst. He blames the wolf inside him for that but he would never know if it was going to be the same if it weren’t for the beast. Very few people are able to get him out of his temporary rage, the Marauders being just a few to name, but during these outbursts he didn’t lose his mind entirely. It’s just how his body deals with these particular kinds of emotions – it prefers to scream them out loud instead of keeping them in.

-A FEW HEADCANONS

1. Remus has a small library of leather-bound books in the flat where he lives. The space is small thus only his favorite books stay on the shelves of the wooden holder. Some of his favorite reads are muggle fairy tales and children’s stories. Sometimes, he reads those before going to bed with the intention of perhaps dreaming about them and forgetting about his inner demons.

2. Lupin has a shelf filled with polaroid pictures of him and the Marauders. Some of them feature some of their other friends too but all kinds of adventures were captured on the tiny pieces of photographic material. From their cliff climbs to their campfires and road trips; from his twelfth birthday to his eighteenth; from this one time when they tried to feed Severus Snape a hair loss potion to the time when they popped the loudest fireworks around the castle at two in the morning right before the exam day in fifth grade. His big journal from Hogwarts is also sitting there but hidden behind the rest of the books.

3. When Remus was younger and still in Hogwarts, his boggart was the full moon. When he had faced one in his third year, the creature transformed into a still puddle of water that contained the reflection of the celestial body, his eyes instantly hurting from its sight by instinct. If Lupin was to encounter the creature now, however, he would see the Marauders being taken away from him by different means – perhaps it would be Sirius going back to his family and being turned to one of the Pureblooded supremasist or James being killed or Peter resenting him for who he was – a monster. Ironically, after the First War ends his Boggart becomes true in one way or another. Either way, the Marauders are broken apart and only left a memory, so his biggest fear becomes the puddle of still water containing the reflection of the siren moon.

4. Remus’ favorites include Pixie Puffs cereal, chocolate, peach juice, history books, the colors brown and dark red, Lupinus flowers ( ironically ). His best classes were Transfiguration and Charms while Potions were his worst nightmare.

5. Remus’ relationship with the Marauders is the one thing he is most afraid of losing. With each and every one of them he holds a special connection, as a group and as different individuals. James always brightens his day with warmhearted jokes and firey heart, Sirius always motivates him to be who he is despite his lycanthropy. However, Peter Pettigrew was the Marauder Remus felt the closest to. Silent and a bit aloof, Wormtail has always been the quiet listener who would listen to his confused mind and offer back advice. As a whole, the Marauders are so much more than just an ordinary group of friends. They are what keeps him sane ever since their first days together until now – through the pranks, the experiences and their relentless bravery of helping a monster out and fleshing into a human worth living.

6. When his father had taken him to the pets shop at Diagon Alley, Remus really wanted a cat. He had always wanted a ginger one that he could love and take care for. Upon entering the little wooden shop, however, all the cats and kittens started hissing at him in fear or aggression so Remus ended up with a Tawny Owl instead.

7. When Remus was packing for his first year at Hogwarts he tried to keep most of the items reminding him of his old life – one filled with pain, nightmares of wolves and Fenrir Greyback and insomnia – behind. He only kept a leather bracelet which still stands on his right hand gifted to him by his father.

-A FEW POTENTIAL PLOT POINTS

1. I would love to explore the relationship between the Marauders in the heated moments of the boiling war. I think in such trying times people let out their true nature out more often than not and with Remus, who has his instincts peaking during stress, it’d be fun to see how the Marauders help him when he’s confused, sad, troubled or anything in between. I’ve always loved the bond between the four boys and their chemistry is definitely something worth exploring.

2. I want to have Remus open up when it comes to his romantic side. He is not exactly reserved when it comes to that but he doesn’t open up as easily. Even if the Marauders make him feel a little bit less self-conscious because of his lycanthropy, he still is a hopeless romantic who limits himself because he doesn’t want to be disappointed. Very few are the constants in his life and he doesn’t want to hurt others just because of the monster residing in him and the things that come with it.

3. We know that in canon, Remus’ life is quite unfortunate after the First Wizarding War. Two of his best friends are dead ( or so he believes ) and the other has suspicions and bears hatred against him. He is left with no one, including his father who he chooses not to bother with his gloomy attitude. I want to discover and perhaps weave on my own the reasons and the build ups that lead to this future life. I know that this RP is semi-AU but I am still eager to explore these little details and chain reactions.

The answer came to him in an instinct, his mouth opening to say it before he bit his tongue. “Uhm, anything that would prevent Sirius’ biggest fear becoming true – hair loss. I swear, this is literally all he whines about and I’m sick of it already so please, let’s just invent something for that. We could add something extra in it too, like a good scent of motorcycles of leather jacket, I dunno.” He laughed, thinking of the impossible to create cure for lycanthropia. Oh, what would he give to revert this beast inside him. But then he wondered, would his bond with these three boys be as strong as it is now if it weren’t for his condition? Nobody knew, not even Remus himself.

♔ You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one other character and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you’d want with you:

“For that one, I’ll probably get someone who wouldn’t want to chase after unicorns and gigantic Acromantulas all the time. Peter’s my best option because there is no way in hell that James and Sirius wouldn’t want to have a ride on their back or whatever. You can’t imagine the lengths they’d go to for some adrenaline. I’m telling you, it’s crazy.” He laughed, pursing his lips while thinking of something to take with him besides his wand. “The eleven years old me would take a book or a dozen of Honeydukes cakes. The eighteen years old me would take something to drink because why not?”

♔ What kinds of decisions are the most difficult for you to make?

Remus furrowed his eyebrows, answering in hesitance. “I-” he paused, thinking about it for some good seconds. “I suppose decisions on life and death. You know, if I am in a situation where I have to kill someone or something I would think twice. Thrice, maybe even four times. It might cost me my life but that’s a life there. It’s hard for me to kill.” Remus took a deep breath, not even fathoming what or how many corpses he would’ve left behind if it wasn’t for the Marauders. “It’s stupidly malicious to take a life just because you have a sick fascination of murdering. It’s…” Lupin looked away, clenching his jaw and exhaling softly, “Can we not talk about it, please?”

♔ What is one thing you would never want said about you?

“I guess that I’m careless. Which I don’t see happening anytime soon because, you know, I care too much about too many things.” He smiled faintly, warm eyes weaving a story too untrue. In reality, Remus was most afraid of being called a beast. A monster like Fenrir Greyback, a destroyer of lives. A killer. But oh, how could he voice that? How could he tell people that he was not this animal who lived to kill and hunt when each month he was reminded of this?

A month after Dumbledore’s advice to begin a diary or a journal or whatever I finally got to do it. You know, being in a new school is kind of scary. It’s like the monsters under my bed which are obviously not there but now dad’s not here to… you know, look over me. Anyways, do I introduce myself here? I’m Remus… Remus Lupin and I’m sorted into the cool red house. People here are very… cheerful and I am… well, I’m me. It’s also kind of intimidating here but I think I’ll manage somehow with the help of the… professors around to you know, keep me in track if I start doing something stupid. It’d be a pity to get expelled so fast because of issues with behavior or something like that. What else do I say? Oh, the library is… neat and there are a couple of classmates who seem to be really nice. I doubt they wanna hang around with me too much though. Frankly, I’m scared to initiate anything by myself, really. *the page continues and finishes with random doodles and lines that begin with a thick jet black color to an inkless trail embedded into the page*

1974, February

I have to study but… I’ve got something on my mind which I can’t get out since my last… trip. Usually, the three days after I get back from… home, are the hardest. You know, it’s just that thing inside that makes you… homesick ( not really ) and… anyways, you know the thing I’m talking about, I’m just avoiding eavesdropping here. What I wanted to tell you was that… you see, ever since my childhood, I’ve never seen hope in the form of something. I read a book once, it was fiction but still, it was revolving around the concept of hope and how one could become happier if their heart were filled with it. Yet, never have I ever experienced the feeling of having my heart peaking with hope. Three days ago though, I saw it. I felt it. Those three boys, I swear, are the entire reason why I’m writing these pages here sanely. These pages would’ve been stained with inner thoughts that would never get out, experiences that would never play out if it weren’t for them. They… they give me hope in my trying times and the world isn’t so grey and negative with them in it. I think it’s too late to say that but I think… I think despite all the tragedies in my life, perhaps they are the thing I need to cling onto to survive… all of this.

1976, May

Do you remember that time when I told you I was the one hatching and developing the more dangerous and reckless plans together with Prongs, Padfoot and Wormtail instead of actually participating in them? You know, when I told you that I acted like their… bodyguard ( Sirius, if you ever find, read and laugh at this, I swear I will not talk to you for a month ), protecting them from teachers and stuff? Well, guess what responsible Lupin did today. He became the wanted DEAD student of the castle. So, we have that exam on Transfiguration and I had studied for it last week. All I needed to do was reread my notes and everything went neatly settled into my brain and ready to pour out of it on a list of parchment. However, just as I was preparing to get in bed, Prongs smashed the door of our dorm room, accompanied by Wormtail, which is the biggest surprise if you ask me, carrying fireworks and other explosives in a bag hanging on his shoulder. The moment I saw them I remembered that I felt a wave of regret but ‘one could not just sleep when James Potter was persuading him’. Long story short, the four of us were awake until three A.M. and hiding under the cloak for around two hours to avoid Filch only to fire up everything in the sky around and inside the castle and ruin everyone’s sleep. It was… look, I’d say unresponsible and definitely foolish, immature and nasty towards our friends and… not that big of a friends but it was fun. Maybe it worked nicely against my stress levels? And, you know, other things. Anyways, when one thinks it’s too good to be ruined by something so insignificant, it turns out McGonagall, a person who I very much respect if I may add, found something on the very same floor where the impact had happened. Yes, my wand. My. Damn. Wand.

Conclusion: This is why I don’t do such pranks.

And, P.S., I got lower on the exam than anticipated. Thanks Prongs, I certainly do not owe you one.

P.S. 2: For the first time it was Wormtail who got us out ( or at least tried to ) of this sticky situation and not me. Oh, how the tables have turned.

1977, late November

I… Today was not my proudest day. But sometimes, you see, a person can just have that much of a certain something and just… well, snap? See, you’d think that after seven years of living under a roof with someone, despite the different houses, bullying would stop at a certain point. I listened to Padfoot when these Pureblood kids tried to get on my nerves or tried to crumble me down and I never seemed to execute his advices well enough. They always got to me. They laughed about my barely visible scars and about my books. About my high grades, and Prefect status and the Marauders kept saying it was because they were jealous. So today a boy from Snape’s house, again, bit me with words and actions. He straight up forced my huge Charms essay up in the air and burned it to a crisp. I don’t know what got into me and I don’t know if it’s because of the wolf inside of me ( the word wolf was scratched, invisible under all the ink ) but I… I just punched the guy. I didn’t even flick my wand I just did it. All I saw in that moment was red and do you know when do I usually see red? When the usual thing happens, when I widen my gaze and lose myself. I immediately felt regret after it but Wormtail was fast enough to get me out of there while also carrying threats of whatnot on his back for me. I’m afraid that maybe my other self is taking the best of me and ripping it apart.

PARA SAMPLE TWO ;; inspired by the nightmare event, a piece in which Remus contemplates about his own visions and the inability to help his friends despite his incredible selflessness ( this is how a reply would look like )

It felt like his mind was a big screen with the nightmarish pictures put on a constant loop. It just kept repeating and his head hurt even days after everything had been over. Remus’ scalp hurt from all the hair pulling, throat sore from the screams that were left unheard in his closed flat and his eyes red, accompanied by the dark circles under them.
