summary: in the wake of carole's diagnosis, bradley gets into an accident, duckie's thoughts run wild and take over
Tumblr media
You were in school when you got the call.
Bradley had gotten into an accident on his way to school. He didn’t have a first or second period so he didn’t come to school with you and just came fifteen minutes before his first class started.
Your mother had called you as you went to lunch, crying as she told you your brother was unconscious because he was in a car accident. Thankfully, it was a T-bone on the passenger side, but someone else hadn’t been paying attention and hit Bradley head on. But the doctors said that he should pull through and be just fine.
It didn’t stop the absolute dread that had been sitting on your stomach since you heard your mother sobbing. You went straight to the office with your mother on the phone to tell them that you were going by your remaining classes, collecting your work and leaving.
The secretary didn’t even question it, seeing the very real tears on your face, and said she would send everyone a heads up.
You had taken your motorcycle to school that morning and you were nearly terrified to get on it. But you decided that you would drive home and get your car, not that you were a hundred percent safe in your car but it was better than being completely exposed on your bike.
You couldn’t risk it.
Tumblr media
Later that day, after a check up, Bradley was cleared to go home. And he was ordered to rest the whole weekend and could take half the week off from school, but he was gonna be just fine.
You and Carole made sure he rested and doted on him the whole weekend.
And then the school week started, and you didn’t want to leave the house.
You justified it to your mom and yourself that it was because she needed her rest, Bradley’s insistence on that sentiment helped your side of the argument. She was insisting it was her job and you were insisting that she deserved to be taken care of as well.
But there was another feeling. A feeling you couldn’t quite place, but you knew you didn’t like it.
Tumblr media
“Yeah, but hey you guys have fun though! I’ll be there next time. Thank you for understanding,” you smiled as you talked to your friend Ellie.
You had made plans to go out with her and a few of your other friends today after school but when they noticed you weren’t in first period, Ellie decided to call you during lunch.
“You can go out, you know, Duckie,” Bradley said from the couch. “I’m not dying, I can-”
“You could have died though! Do you know how close you were to dying and leaving me alone!?”
Bradley bruised eyes widened at your outburst.
You were never the loud one. You weren’t the type to lash out. You were more like your dad in that way, not the type to yell unless it was needed. So to hear you shout out of the blue like that was concerning.
“Duckie
”
You shook your head and stood up, “I’m gonna make lunch, sandwich okay?” Bradley just nodded and watched you rush into the kitchen.
When you got there you braced yourself on the sink with one hand as your other came up to your chest as it began to ache and your hand trembled violently. You couldn’t get air into your lungs, it stopped just before filling your lungs, and your legs seemed to stop working. A heat rushed up your body; your feet became too hot in your socks and a cold sweat ran down your back.
It was like you were frozen. The ringing in your ears did not help the nausea as your stomach churned.
Your dad is dead. Your mom is dying. Your twin can die at any time. Then you would be all alone. Sad, lonely little Duckie
the last in the flock. Poor thing.
A sob forced its way out of your body, wracking your chest with force as your legs shook and you lowered yourself to the ground.
Your hand on your chest tapped against your breast bone with no rhythm as you lost control of your thoughts and your breathing. You felt numb, like your nerve endings were on fire – the cool metal of the dishwasher had no effect on you.
“Duckie? Duckie, hey, what’s wrong?”
Bradley had gotten off the couch and came over to you the moment he heard you sob.
He didn’t know what he thought he would see but it wasn’t his twin sister struggling to breath on the floor.
“Hey, Y/N! Y/N! Hey what’s-”
Bradley grabbed you by the shoulders, hoping to get your attention but all you did was sob and push him away. He hit the island with a pained grunt as he looked at you confused.
He realized that you were mumbling something to yourself through your sobs.
“Alone
 Alone
They’re all dead, I’m gonna be alone
”
Then you were sucking in strangled breaths and sobbing them out, coughing hard as you gripped at your shirt. “It’s hot, too hot
Can’t breathe.. Can’t-” You cut yourself of with a sob.
Bradley sat there in shock, he didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t go get your mom, she was out with Sarah Kazansky and he didn’t want to bother them. He couldn’t call Maverick because he wasn’t in the position to come help. But there was one number he could call.
Quickly he pulled out his phone, dialing the three digits.
“9-1-1 what is your emergency?”
“I think my sister is having a panic attack.”
“Okay, are you with her right now or can you hear her in the other room?”
“I’m in front of her, we’re in the kitchen on the floor
I-I don’t know what to do, what do I do?”
“What’s your name?”
“Bradley, my sister’s name is Y/N.”
“I’m Hannah, I’m gonna help you both through this okay? Just follow my instructions to the best of your abilities, can you do that?”
Bradley nodded, forgetting she couldn’t see him, “Y-yes I-I can do that.”
“Alright, what I want you to do first is put me on speaker okay?”
He put her on speaker and sat his phone down, “Okay, I did it.”
Hannah proceeded to walk him through calming you down.
First, Bradley had to let you know that he was there and that he was there to help. He calmly got your attention on him, hating that your eyes looked over his wounds rather than in his eyes. “Duckie, hey, look in my eyes, I’m here I’m right here.”
Then he had to distract you. He asked you to hold your arms up, touch his fingertips with yours above your head. This not only helped you to focus on something but it helped to expand your chest to allow more air in.
“Good job Duckie, you’re doing so good.”
Last he was to help you slow your breathing down. He tried counting down from ten, but that didn’t work so he then tried twenty but that didn’t work either.
“Hannah what do I do?”
“Ask her what she needs you to do.”
He nodded and found your eyes, “Hey, Y/N, tell me what you need.” He waited a beat before speaking again. “What do I need to do?”
“H-Heart
heart beat,” you said, patting your own chest.
Bradley nodded and gently took your hand, putting it to his chest.
“Can you feel that? I’m okay, and you’re okay. We’re safe.”
He watched you nod and your breathing started to even out. “Good job Duckie, I’m so proud of you. You’re doing so good.”
“Bradley, the paramedics are there. Can you let them in?”
“Yeah I can-” He moved to get up but your fist balled in his shirt and you shook your head, “No
 please
”
“Hannah, tell them there is a key under the mat. I can’t leave her.”
“I can do that.”
A few seconds later paramedics arrived in the kitchen as Bradley pulled you into his lap. He held you close and kissed the side of your head. “It’s okay, I got you. I got ya.”
The medics checked your vitals and got you a little oxygen to help you breathe better.
“Okay, Y/N, you’re gonna be really drained the rest of the day, take it easy alright?”
You could only manage a nod and Bradley rubbed your back.
The medics and Bradley shared a nod as the medics left.
He sat there with you until you were ready to get up. He didn’t speak other than gentle reassurances and praises.
“Bradley
”
You broke the silence about fifteen minutes later, your voice still shaky and a little raspy.
He hummed, “What’s up Duckie? What happened?” You sniffled, “I think it was just Mom’s diagnosis
 your accident
 Dad
it was all just a lot. I was scared
 Scared of being alone
 being the last one
”
Bradley rubbed your arm, “Oh Duckie
” “I know I know it’s-” “It’s not stupid, your fear is valid. I hope it’s a comfort to know that I’m not leaving you with a fight,” he said, kissing your temple. “Nothing can take me away from my baby sister.”
You snorted, “You’re only twelve minutes older.” “Still older.”
Rolling your eyes you sat up a little, “Can we go lay down? The floor is uncomfy.” He nodded and you both got up before going to lay down on the couch. “I love you, BradBrad.”
He chuckled and gently rubbed your side, “I love you too, Duckie.”

Tumblr media
- I fully believe you and Bradley are constantly arguing, fighting, and trying to get one-over the other.
- Whether it had been in grades, sports, awards, and friends; there was always competition. Your mother despised it; seeing her too sweet kids fighting and kicking shoes and expensive baseball gear everywhere.
- HOWEVER, if some dickhead idiot tries to hurt his sister? Bradley is getting Out of School Suspension and a call home for what he did to them during baseball practice.
- The sense of protection was almost overlying the competition. You looked after Bradley and he looked after you: it was like an unspoken rule you both followed.
- In middle school, you both found your cliques and friends, and Bradley became a part of the popular guys who picked on girls if they didn't like their weird tactics to try and get a girlfriend. You admitted how you wanted to beat his friends every time they went behind your best friend and messed with her. Then, the next day, Bradley has switched the conversation and pulled the guys away from messing with your friends.
- Whenever Bradley told you and his mother about his choice of joining the Navy like his father before him; that was the first time you saw your mother get so angry. She was sick, lying in a hospital bed, and red-faced as she heard Bradley was being drafted.
- You supported Bradley; during the times when the phones were cut off and all you could do was send letters. You made sure the time you spent with your brother was wisely spent, getting ice cream and watching movies in blanket forts. Then, he would go back to fighter jets and crappy beds that hurt his back.
- Whenever your mother died after a long and hard battle of sickness, it killed you and Bradley, to stand there alone. With no close family to help mourn besides a few random cousins, and Maverick, you and Bradley became each other's protectors.
- You and B always somehow get a prank on every time you see someone from his team. Whether it's something small or something big: it's happening. It's inevitable.
- All in all, Bradley is the best brother ever. With his dumb, stupid mustache and obsession with Ray-Bans and his Ford Bronco, he's the best.
- You and Bradley are like, THE siblings at The Hard Deck. btw.

Sneak peak

Tumblr media
“I must be drunk.” Bradley mutters as he sets his beer down on the table, staring in disbelief at the entrance of The Hard Deck. Lauren shakes her head with a faint chuckle as she pats her boyfriend on the shoulder.
“No, I don’t think so.”
You sit next to Phoenix in slight disbelief and horror. This can not be happening. There's two of them? This can not be happening. Setting down your glass, you put a hand to your mouth. Glancing to Phoenix, then back to the entrance you make a soft ‘oh’.
“Your boyfriend is a twin?” Your voice comes out in a disbelieving mutter. Natasha simply nods with a faint smile. This has to be the worst news of your life and Bradley’s too. Jake freaking ‘Hangman’ Seresin, who is an absolute pain in the butt, is a twin. From afar, they don't even look different. Except Jake is in his navy khakis whereas the duplicate is wearing jeans and a plaid flannel rolled up to his elbows despite the hot California weather.
The world simply does not need two Seresins.

You were the quintessential of the pop-rock star.  You had a lot of problems with the press, both concerning your love life and the setbacks of your ex-band.
The first problem was that you were often seen leaving hotels with different partners : the press loved that you didn't settle down and always made a big deal out of it. You didn't really care, you knew the tabloids always twisted the truth just to sell more garbage. What bothered you was that your mom kept calling you about it, wondering why you couldn't be discreet and serious, have a normal job like your twin; the perfect little Robby, pride and joy of the family. He was in the navy, serving the country, and your father liked to remind you that Robert was doing something useful, something great. Yet, you didn't care what the public and your family thought of you. You just wanted to play your songs, have fun on stage and in the studio. It was your cop-out after some traumatic experiences you went through in high school.
As for your problems with the band, it was a different kettle of fish.
You were the lead vocalist and guitarist. You loved being on stage, it made you feel powerful, in control. You were backed by three talented but lazy guys about your age. It was your agent's idea to put you in charge of them. And what a great idea. At first it was fun, you had a good time. But as time went by, their excesses slowed down your rise in the charts. And they wasted all their time, energy and money on the wrong things. Every day, the press had a scoop about them doing something illegal or immoral. The last one on their list was being seen exiting a bar with underage fans.
Those recent events forced your label to give you a choice; either the whole group was fired or you could continue as a solo artist; your producer and staff knew that you weren't really a troublemaker, so it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for you.  You didn't even hesitate to sign your new contract ; and that led to a new scandal in the press, creating false drama between you and your ex mates. But as much as you were determined to make a name for yourself, you also needed a break from all the “scandal” that was going on. You made a deal with your producer and new agent: you had one month to come up with at least two singles, while you could go anywhere you wanted to find inspiration and relax.
And what could be more relaxing than the seaside ? The beach, the sun, the salty air, the feeling of being in an eternal summer ? It was perfect. You booked your flight to San Diego and rented a small beach house on Airbnb.  What could possibly go wrong?
Well, maybe running into your twin brother at the local bar.
Tumblr media
The Hard Deck seemed like a pretty chill place and the owner, Penny, was really nice. You spent some evenings there, trying to come up with some lyrics over a Coke.  She was curious and you were happy to share what you were working on, even though you hadn't made any progress. She had that reassuring aura, and talking with her was like talking to an old friend that you knew all your life. She was genuinely interested in what you had to share, and gave you some advice when she could. She also was curious to hear your voice and tried a few times to get you at the piano. You refused politely each time, feeling strangely shy.
It took you a week and a half to work up the courage to go to that piano.
The bar was rather empty, which was unusual for a Saturday night but made it easier for you to convince yourself that it was okay. You discreetly started to warm up your voice and started a version of Your Song - Penny confessed to you it was one of her favorite songs.
In a corner of the bar, by the pool table, a group of pilots were surprised to hear the piano playing at this hour. "Looks like someone stole your seat, Bradshaw," a tall blond man sneered.  "Looks like it, Seresin." Bradley raised an eyebrow and leaned over to see who had taken his place at the piano. The others gently urged him to join them; after all, he was the musician among the squad. He pretended to be annoyed by their request and joined you for the last chorus.  You were surprised, but smiled quietly and finished your "performance" with him. You made room for him on the little bench, and with a look of approval, you moved on to another song of his choice: Ain't no mountain higher .  The patrons of the bar, who had become more numerous, were delighted to have a private mini-concert. Some of them started to dance, others joined in singing. It was a fun experience.
After the end of the song, you smiled and shook the hand of your partner of a moment and let him enjoy the piano by himself. You made your way back to your stool and asked Penny for a glass of water. You felt a presence next to you and turned a little to see who was there. You easily guessed it was a navy man ; the uniform - talk about obvious -, the perfectly styled hair. You grinned at the tall blond man in front of you.
“So, does that pretty voice have a name ?” asked Jake with a smirk. You rolled your eyes at his flirtatious tone and his pushed Texan accent.  “Well yes actually, I’m-” “Y/N ?” You frowned, immediately recognizing the voice that had spoken your name. You easily spotted his surprised face among the other navy people that were close to you and Jake. "Robert?" "Don't tell me you're his girlfriend..." "What? No!" you shouted at the same time, making a few of the others giggle. "Gross!" you pretended to vomit. "She's my sister, Hangman," Bob sighed. "Twin sister, to be exact," you precised.
You couldn't help but giggle at the shocked looks on the faces of who you assumed were his colleagues. He was suddenly flooded with questions, and you enjoyed watching him turn redder and redder. Then they focused on you. "You two don't look alike at all," Reuben said, scanning you in detail. You rolled your eyes and smiled, leaning against your brother as you poked his side. "Robert took the height and brains, I took the charm and talent."
Your brother sighed and ran his hand over his neck, slightly embarrassed. His teammates were happy to meet you, especially happy to annoy Bob, and Natasha seemed to realize something. "Your voice sounds familiar... I've heard it somewhere before... in a band, right?" " Nemesis ," you smiled and nodded, mentioning your old band, "but I'm solo now. Kept the stage name though." "Quite a few scandals with that band..." your twin mumbled.  You decided not to pay attention to him. Like your parents, Robert had never understood your career choice, arguing that you were brilliant at school and could have done anything else. Of course you were pretty intelligent but you had fallen in love with music as an outlet for your pain. But your family didn’t seem to accept your way of coping with your traumas.
The rest of the evening went off without a hitch. You got to know your brother's second family. They all had their own personalities, but that's what made them so endearing. Jake invited you to join them the next day, since it was their day off and they wanted to relax at the beach. You gladly accepted.
Robert didn't say much to you, the atmosphere between you was cold and tense. Natasha noticed it, so she joined her WSO to chat. "What's wrong, Bob? Your sister seems nice and yet you're here, not saying anything to her." He sighed a little as he watched you chatting and having fun with the others. "I'm worried about her," he confessed, "she
she hides herself in that personna
 that Nemesis
” “Aren't all artists ? I mean, they wouldn't take a stage name otherwise.” “I guess
but I’m scared she’s losing herself
” he said softly, glancing at you. He grumbled when he noticed that Jake was flirting with you; and you didn't seem to refuse his advances either. Natasha let out a soft “damn” when Jake slid his arm around you and Bob almost jumped off his seat, mumbling an irritated “that’s it”.
You felt a strong hand gripping your wrist and you were drawn out of Jake’s embrace and out the bar. “The hell Robby ?” you scoffed once outside, “I was in the middle of a conversation !” “No you weren’t, you were flirting ! With one of my teammates !” “First off, he initiated it ! And second, in what world is that your business ? We’re grown ups, I can handle some flirting !” “Well, first off , you’re my sister and second , Hangman is
he’s not the type to settle down !” he tried to explain himself but you just rolled your eyes. “Oh my god, you sound just like dad ! Why should I settle down ? I’m having fun, I’m happy that way !” You pinched the bridge of your nose, annoyed. “Stop trying to father me, I’m doing fine since I left !” “Yeah, you seem real good in the local news,” he mumbles, putting his hands in his pockets. He didn't even look at you as he said those words. You hated it when he did that, always half-assing his thoughts. You couldn’t help but let out a nervous laugh, tilting your head back.  “And now you sound like mom. I can handle my life just fine Robert. I don’t need your concern, let alone your judgment ! I’ve never been better, ok ? Leave me the fuck alone !”
You were lying. You both knew that. He could read into you so easily, it made you sick. Call it ‘twin magic’ or ‘sibling intuition’, you still hated the way his blue eyes looked at you with worry and questions in them, knowing all too well that you were not fine.
You passed him, going back to the bar to get your stuff and pay Penny. Out of spit - and mostly because you wanted to - you handed your number to Jake and left with a smirk. You could hear the squad gently hassle Hangman who proudly showed off the piece of paper you gave him.
A little fun won’t kill you, would it ?
Tumblr media
The next day, you joined the Dagger squad on the beach, near the Hard Deck.
They were playing a strange football game ; dogfight football , attack and defense at the same time, Natasha explained to you.  You watched their first round and second, it seemed fun. At least, Bob seemed to have fun. You remembered he was not a teamsport guy younger. He actually hated the fact that your dad made him go to the tryouts for the football team in high school. To his misfortune, he got in. You smiled and sighed remembering those days.  Sometimes, you missed the time you were close to your twin, when you could tell him everything, before it all fell apart in junior year. A cold shiver ran down your spine while you thought back about it. Your life changed so much at that time, you didn’t like to remember it.
Crouching in front of you, Jake snapped you out of your reverie. “Hey there darlin, care to join us ? We’ll be gentle, promise.” he said with a playful grin. You arched an eyebrow and sneered. “Oh please, don’t be, I can handle it.” He laughed and helped you up. You were put in his team against Natasha, Bob, Bradley and Reuben. You were - to your own surprise - pretty fast and efficient. Javy and Jake joked around saying that being stealth had to be running in the family.
You really had fun, even laughing with your brother. You didn’t know who won but you scored the last point of the game, and Jake put you on his shoulders to celebrate before tossing you in the water. “You’re a dead man, Seresin !” you shouted, before laughing. Robert helped you out the water and gave you a towel without a word. You silently thanked him and you all took a water break while deciding what to eat.
Reuben and Mickey volunteered to go get the pizzas and while they did, Natasha proposed a volleyball match. She decided that Bob and you would be in her team and you smiled. Bob couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle ; the two of you loved that sport when you were kids. When you went to your grandma's house for the holidays, you used to play against your cousins. Of course, you kicked their ass. They called you the Evil Twins. Once your heads were in the game, you were unstoppable. And Bradley, Jake and Javy would soon understand why you and Bob were so happy to be on the same team.
The two of you didn’t even need to talk to understand the next move of the other. Even Natasha didn’t really understand what was happening. You won the first, then second, then third match. You laughed at the exasperation of Jake and Javy, Bradley on the other hand was just tired of running around. He quit with Natasha, leaving Jake and Javy to find a strategy to strike Bob and you down. “Like the old times huh ?” your twin smiled, giving you a bottle of water. You returned the smile and nodded. “Let’s show them. Evil Twins ?” “Evil Twins.” He clapped his hands with yours with a grin. Oh, the other two weren't ready for the beating they were about to get.
Javy called it quits after the third set. They lost them all and he was getting tired. Jake was pouting while you jumped on your brother’s back. “Evil Twins for the win !” Natasha laughed. You giggled, while Robert ran around like a doofus, you on his back, taunting Jake.  "Don't tease him too much, you know he's a sore loser!" sneered Bradley. "Nonsense!" sulked Jake, "I always accept my defeats, except they never happen.” The rest of the team rolled their eyes, both annoyed and amused.
Reuben and Mickey returned with the pizzas, and the rest of the afternoon was less athletic. Some went for a swim, others played cards in the shade of an umbrella. You chatted peacefully with Natasha and Jake, Robert never too far away. Strangely enough, you were glad he stayed close. Sometimes he would join in the conversation, but he remained Bob, preferring to watch and listen rather than talk.  It was a nice afternoon, you felt like a teenager on holiday with a bunch of friends. Bradley and Javy started a water fight by grabbing Bob and throwing him in the water. You and Natasha ran at the boys to avenge him and one thing led to another and you all ended up in the water, friendly fighting each other.
The sun slowly got low, the afternoon ending peacefully. You stayed at the bar with the squad, learning more about each one, more about your brother’s ‘new’ life. They told you about their life on base and about the bird strike that Natasha and Bob had suffered from. You scolded your twin because he never told you about it. He defended himself by saying that it was not that big of a deal, but by the looks on the others' faces, you knew he lied.
Part of you was jealous of him. You both left home around the same time, and he seemed so happy now, away from your parents and their intrusive presence, away from your father's demoralizing, degrading and demotivating comments. You couldn't understand how he could be doing so well when you were struggling to find yourself, to be happy. This question echoed in your head and made you feel too much in the room. You excused yourself and went outside for some fresh air. You were pale and shaking, and anxiety was getting the better of you. You tried to ease your breathing and closed your eyes to focus on the sound of the waves in front of you. You could hear the laughter and indescribable conversations in the distance, mingled with the music and singing. It was somewhat peaceful and yet you couldn't calm the flood of painful memories that invaded your mind. Every laugh reminded you of your ex's, every burst of voice a little too loud made you cower. You didn't want to think about it anymore. You wanted to forget everything. You just wanted it to stop. It had to stop. You had to get away from it all. You had to-
“Y/N ? Are you ok ?”
Your brother's gentle voice made everything disappear. You felt yourself breathe again. But you knew it would only be temporary ; because seeing him worried would make you weak and anxious again.  You took a deep, shaky breath before turning to him. You tried to hide the tremble of your voice, and put on a fake smile. "It's okay... I... I have to go home. Thanks for today, it was fun!" You passed him in a hurry, still pale and scrapie.
He sighed and bit his lip before summoning his courage. "What are you running from? You... you looked like you were fine, and then all of a sudden you're running away. " "Robby, please-" "What happened?" "Nothing, I-" "Did someone say something?" "No! I just-" "Did I say or do something wrong? Tell me!" "Then let me talk for god’s sake !" you clenched your fists then sighed. "You didn't do anything wrong, Robby. It's just that... I can't..." your voice cracked a little and you leaned your head back to hold back your tears. Bob's head tilted in concern and he stepped towards you. "Can't what? You can't do what?"
You didn't answer, shaking your head. You couldn't put into words the confusion you felt. You searched for words and began to pace back and forth. "Can't do what Y/N?" Robert insisted gently. "I... fuck... fuck."
Your voice and your whole body were shaking. It was getting harder and harder to hold back the tears. How could you tell your brother that you envied him and hated that feeling ? How could you envy him for building his life, a life filled with healthy loved ones that were there for him? How could you hold a grudge when he was the one who got you out of your abusive relationship at the risk of his acceptance into the naval academy ?
He took another step towards you, reaching for your hand, but you stepped back. "Hey, come on, tell me-" "I can't get over it, okay?! I-I can't figure out how and why you managed to grow up and I'm stuck at 17! Why do I always feel like I'm in pieces, alone, like he 's still running my life, like he 's always there, over my shoulder, no matter what I do?" "Y/N... it wasn't your fault-"  "I know!!! I fucking know it wasn't my fault!!” you cut him, almost screaming, “I know he 's the one who did this to me, who pretended to love me, who beat the shit out of me and abused me every single day for months! I know all of that ! Then why am I still stuck there ? Why am I the one still struggling?! Why am I the one who feels like a complete failure ? Why can't I let it go?!" your bottom lip was trembling as tears rolled down your face. “Why can’t I just move on ? Why do I always hear dad saying ‘told you so’ or mom sighing every time I mess up ? Why don’t they ever want to talk about what happened but they urge me to just forget about it ?! Why don't they support me ? Why don’t you ?!”
You gasped, trying to catch your breath, before you whimpered and cried like a baby. Bob stood still for a moment before pulling you into his arms and hugging you. He suspected that the events of your past were still haunting you, but not to this extent. And you felt that he didn't support you... he felt like shit. How could he neglect your feelings so much, how could he act the way he blamed your parents? He let you cry against him for a long moment, swallowing his discomfort. He was the one to blame, and he had to focus on you. "I... I'm sorry, Y/N. I... I didn't realize that my behavior was hurting you
I'm just worried, and I didn't show it the right way. I'm an idiot." "A big idiot," you mumbled, sniffling. "Yes, a big idiot. And I'd really like you to let me help you. We... We have contacts with some really good therapists for post-traumatic stress and stuff... I could give you their numbers?" You just nodded, your tears finally stopping.  "I'm sorry I yelled at you..." you mumbled. Bob smiled and pinched your side.  "Don't be, I deserved it. I’m sorry I tried to interfere between you and Hangman
" “He’s actually a sweet guy behind his smug facade, y'know ?” you smiled and chuckled to his falsely doubtful face and the little 'meh' he let out.
Tumblr media
As promised, Bob put you in touch with the therapists he'd told you about, and negotiated a longer return period with your agency. You had a full month and a half more. You started to really work on the singles, and your sessions with the therapist were helping. You knew you'd have to keep seeing one when you got home.  But going wasn’t something you wanted to think about. As the days went by, you didn't want to leave San Diego. Your brother and the Dagger Squad were stationed here permanently, and you needed him in your life.
Him and Jake.
You always thought that the two of you were just a fling, that you or he would get tired of it and move on. But neither of you did. You spent more and more time with him, he'd crash at your Airbnb - uninvited - every now and then with a movie or dinner.  The more time you spent with him, the more you fell for him and you didn't want it to end as a one-night stand, you knew that much.
As you got to dig beneath his proud, cocky, arrogant facade, you discovered a gentle man full of insecurities. He talked about his father, who was not exactly the ideal role model and the fact that he didn’t have the best of relations with him. He talked about his mama, and with the look he had in his eyes, you knew he worshiped the woman ; based on what he shared, you figured Mrs Seresin was more than strong and dedicated to her children. He told you about his sisters, both of them a couple of years older than him, and his nieces and nephews. He loved the munchkins - his terms, not yours - and you saw in his eyes how much he meant it. They were his whole world, but he’d never admit it.
You tried to take your time with him but he had a strange effect on you ; you found yourself opening up to him, faster than you thought.  You'd never told anyone about your abusive relationship - except Robert. And Jake had listened to you without judgment or interruption. He sat there, ready to absorb any information you wanted and were able to share.
So you were torn between your desire to get back to the recording studio in New York, to get back to work, and your desire to stay in the peaceful everyday life you'd created in just a few weeks. You had to go back. You had obligations to keep. Maybe after you fulfilled your part of the contract, you could negotiate and come back to San Diego? This thought was the only thing that kept you working hard. You succeeded in writing three more singles than the agreed two. You were quite pleased with yourself.
And sooner than you realized, you had to go back to New York.
Natasha, with the help of the rest of the team, had organized a little surprise going-away party at the Hard Deck. Penny was in on the secret and had given them the bar to themselves. You loved the surprise and the evening was unforgettable. Bradley had insisted on karaoke, and you dragged your twin along. Robert rolled his eyes, but played along. You had the time of your life and enjoyed every second of this last night with your new friends. They made you promise to call them whenever you could, to think of them and to come back as soon as possible. They took you home and spent a few more hours with you before letting you rest. But just when you thought everyone was gone, you found Jake on the couch, waiting for you. You felt butterflies in your stomach as you saw him there, his eyes anchored in yours. You detailed his face, as if to remember it after you'd left; his slightly wavy blond hair, those beautiful green eyes, his perfect jawline, his cocky smile. That damn smile that made you weak in the knees like a teenager. God, you hated that smile as much as you loved it.
"Enjoying the view?"
You didn't realize that he had stood up and was now so close to you. A deep blush spread across your cheeks and yet you couldn't take your eyes off him, your gaze locked with his. You bit your lip and grinned. "So what if I am, big boy?" you teased. He huffed, amused, and his hand slowly reached for yours, your knuckles brushing. His other hand reached for your cheek, his thumb stroking it tenderly. You leaned into his touch, feeling yourself melt under his gaze. He said nothing, his eyes never leaving you. "What?" you whispered, your heart beating a little faster. "That's how I want to remember you." "Like what? Tipsy and tired?" you laughed a little. "Na. Happy... relaxed... you look beautiful." Jake whispered back, his cheeks taking on a rosy hue. Your stomach fluttered and you found the courage to interlock his fingers with yours. "Sounds like I have you under my siren's spell, Lieutenant..." you teased, biting your lip. "You certainly do, ma'am," he whispered again, the gap between the two of you only a few inches. You felt your confidence slip from your fingers, your eyes on his lips.
"Kiss me..."
It's an almost inaudible beg that escaped you, and you didn't even have time to be embarrassed that you felt him on your lips. The kiss was sweet, tender. You squeezed his hand into yours, and his free one slid around your waist, holding you close. You wanted the kiss to last forever. With amazing ease, Jake lifted you against him, his hands going under your thighs. You wrapped your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck. He carried you into the bedroom, his lips exploring yours, your jaw, your neck and your collarbone. Your fingers brushed through his soft hair and soon you felt your back against the mattress.  Your clothes ended up chaotically thrown around the room as you undressed and kissed each other. The moon gave you just enough light to never lose sight of him. His eyes devoured you before his hands discovered your body. He asked you if you were okay every step of the way, and you never thought being asked for consent could be so arousing.
That night was the best sex you've ever had. It was slow and tender at first, and when you were both comfortable enough, it got rougher, in a good way.  You fell asleep curled up against him, rocked by his heartbeat.
The next morning you woke up alone in bed. Jake left a note on the nightstand, saying he had to go to work early. "Call me when you can, have a safe flight. PS: Gonna miss you. PPS: If anything happens to you on the flight, I'll hunt the pilot." You chuckled and tucked the post-it into your notebook. You quickly got ready and Robert took you to the airport.
The ride was rather quiet, neither of you wanting to be separated again. He helped you with your luggage and waited with you until you finally had to go. You hugged him tightly and thanked him for the past weeks. "Call me when you get there, okay? And don't forget to hydrate. And eat. And..." "Ok Dad," you joked with a smile, "I'll call you, don't worry. Love you, Robby." "I love you too. Be safe."
Tumblr media
8 months.
You have been stuck in New York for 8 long months. You did a lot though. A new album, some concerts, some interviews and photo shoots. The 'scandals' in the press disappeared and the journalists finally focused more on your songs. You video called the Daggers as much as you could - almost every day - and texted a lot with your brother, reassuring him that you continued to see a therapist and that you were doing well under the stress. But the one you called and texted the most was Jake. Every day you had a sweet good morning text, and every night you had an equally sweet good night text.
You missed him.
You missed them all, of course. But Jake Seresin was under your skin. And as hard as it was to admit, you loved him. You couldn't wait to see him again. Of course, no one knew you were together. Natasha seemed to have doubts, and sometimes Bob was somewhat suspicious too but as long as they didn’t ask you didn’t say anything.
8 months of hard work and your agent agreed to let you go to San Diego as he made an arrangement between a recording studio and your label.  You told no one but Penny. You wanted to surprise the team. You had one last show to do in New York and then you would catch your flight to California.
Before the concert, you called your brother, knowing that he would probably be at the Hard Deck with the others, since it was almost 7:00 p.m there. As soon as he answered, you could hear the team around him. "Wow, look at you Nemesis! You look great!" Natasha said, smiling broadly. You laughed and thanked her when you heard the other whistle and complimented you. "Not too stressed?" Bob asked as the others calmed down. "Well, it's the last show for at least six weeks. I’ll try to make it fun!" "Of course you will," said a voice you recognized immediately. "Hangman, you look good," you teased as you saw him appear on the screen. You noticed the slight blush on his cheeks as he spotted you in your dress and makeup. He didn't have time to reply that you had to go on stage.  "Ok bye guys, gotta go, love you!" you hung up and had time to see a text message on your phone : 'You better keep that dress'. You smiled. You may have fallen in love with Jake, but you also knew you had him wrapped around your finger.
The show went smoothly, and after a celebratory dinner with your team, you went back to your soon-to-be-outdated apartment. All your things were packed and ready to go. You couldn't wait to move to San Diego. Your flight was at 3 pm in New York and you were scheduled to land in California at 6 pm. Bless the time zone difference, if you were lucky, you could get to the Hard Deck before the team and wait for them.
But since nothing ever goes exactly according to plan, your flight was an hour late. That wasn't too bad, you could still surprise them, you just had to change the way. You contacted Penny and asked her if she could manage to distract them. She agreed and gave you permission to use the back door to be more discreet when you entered. Your excitement was through the roof, you felt like a child on Christmas Day.  By the time your cab reached the bar, your heart was pounding in your chest. You couldn't believe you were finally there, finally where you felt at home. But you had to be reunited with those you considered family to feel completely at home. You almost ran to the back door of the bar, re-reading the instructions Penny had sent you: she'd distract the Daggers by asking them to bring back some heavy beer packs and other beverages, and you could hide discreetly by the pool table.
The perfect plan.
You did as she said, a smile forming on your lips as you heard your friends in the distance. You were stressed, but not in an anxious way, you just couldn't wait. You picked up a pool cue to keep your hands busy. When you finally heard them coming, you bit the inside of your cheek to keep from screaming ‘surprise!’. The first person to spot you was Mickey. His eyes widened and he stopped dead in his tracks, almost tripping Reuben, Natasha and Javy. They didn't have time to grumble before Mickey pointed at you, speechless. A small laugh escaped you as they froze in front of you, one after the other. Only Jake, Bradley and Robert were missing. Bradley and your twin were chatting, a little bit behind, and you soon heard Robert's voice.
"Are you guys okay? You look like you've seen a ghost..." His voice became almost inaudible at the end of his sentence, as he realized they were all staring at you. You smiled at them and tilted your head. "Are we playing, or are you afraid of losing?" you asked with a bit of a laugh. Natasha couldn't hold back her laughter and almost ran to hug you. "It's good to see you again, Mini Floyd."
The others came right after to greet you, hugging you and sometimes lifting you off the ground. You laughed, happy to see them again. Your twin was still frozen, not believing his eyes. You scooted up to him and pinched his cheeks. "Good evening Robby, did you-" You didn't even have time to finish your sentence before he pulled you into his arms. You smiled and hugged him as tightly as you could, small tears of joy escaping from both of you.  "It's good to see you," he finally said, "Missed your stupid face.” "Oh I know you did, you can't live without me dearest brother !" you chuckled. You caught up with everyone, admitting that you were on a break, but not telling them that you were here for good. You wanted everyone to be here to make that announcement but someone was missing.
You paid for your round of beers - and sparkling water for Bob - and went looking for Jake. Why wasn't he here?  Penny grinned as she noticed the look on your face. "Don't worry Y/N, he's just on the phone with his sister. One of his nephews' birthdays, I think." "Thanks Pen- Wait, what are you-" "I know everything dear, he talks too much for his own good if you ask the good questions." "How did you find out?" you whispered, making sure no one was listening. "Well, it wasn't really hard. Some of your interviews or shows have been aired," she pointed at the old TV, "and the calls you made ; he just had that look in his eyes. I can tell when a man is head over heels. He certainly is."
You blinked and shook your head in disbelief. Of course she'd guessed; Penny knew the squadron like her own children. She chuckled and handed you another beer. “Go surprise him.” You smiled and nodded, heading to the front door. Your heart fluttered when you finally heard Jake’s voice. It was hushed but you could feel his smile through his soft laughter. You waited for him to end his call, still hidden by the door. You bit back a chuckle when you heard him saying goodbye to the kids with a baby voice. It was ridiculously adorable.
“Hello stranger, does that pretty voice have a name ? ”
He was a bit startled and turned to you hastily, not believing his ears. A surprised expression appeared on his face, but a flirtatious smile quickly took its place. "That's my line, baby." "Oh really? Supposed I forgot," You grinned proudly and took a step towards him, "Did ya miss me, big boy?" He grinned and grabbed your waist, sending a sweet shiver down your spine. "Not as much as you missed me." You rolled your eyes in amusement and set the beer you had brought him aside. You took a moment to just drown in his green eyes, the light of the sunset making them look surreal. How could he be so handsome ?
He was quite speechless to have you here, it made you smile. Jake was always so talkative, it was strange to have him so quiet around you. "Cat got your tongue, Seresin?" He chuckled and stroked your cheek. "Why don't you check?" You smiled and finally kissed him. You had waited 8 months for this feeling and it was just so good. His soft lips against yours, his strong hands on your waist, fingers digging lightly into your flesh. You put your hands on his neck, parted your lips to let his tongue reach for yours. One of his hands slid up to cup your cheek and you leaned into his touch as the kiss ended.  "I have to admit, I missed that," he whispered with a grin, his forehead pressed gently against yours. You huffed and rolled your eyes, "Told you I had you under my spell." He laughed and kissed the nape of your neck, holding you close. You smiled and stroked his hair before stepping back.  "Let's join the team before ‘Tasha gets suspicious."
You took his hand and headed inside, eager to tell your friends the big news.
You missed the atmosphere of the Hard Deck. The soft songs from the jukebox, the always nice patrons, your favorite people at the pool table or playing darts... everything was so comforting. Your smile widened when you reached the Daggers, dragging Jake with you. "Look who I found outside," you teased, "good old Hangman.” "Ah, you should have let him out," Bradley sneered, sipping his beer. “Real funny Bradshaw, I know you already missed me.”
You let the two men fight like two children and when you noticed Natasha's eyes on your hand in Jake's, you blushed a little. She grinned and whispered something to Reuben. You could read a little 'damn it !' on his lips as he frowned. "Okay guys, Javy and I won! The bet is over!" "What? No!" Bradley was outraged. He grumbled and handed Natasha a bill.  "Wait a minute, what bet?" your twin asked. "Well, my dear Bob, it seems that our little Jake and your sister... are together." You blushed and wanted to hide, not knowing how your brother would react. Jake was already arguing with Javy, telling him he was a traitor for betting on it, since he had confided in him on the subject.
"Oh, I've known for a while," Robert said simply with a smile. "What?!" you huffed, letting go of your boyfriend's hand to face your twin. "What do you mean you knew?" "Well, for starters, Jake stayed with you the night before you went back to New York. And you hid the hickey he left on your neck badly. Then I got suspicious when every time we ended our video calls, he got one in the next two minutes; and he's not the most discreet when he's on the phone. But I knew it when he bought that really nice necklace and asked me, of all people, for advice. A week later you were wearing it. So yeah, I knew," he shrugged with a smile, laughing a little at your expression. "What? I just thought that neither of you were ready to tell anyone? But you seem happy so it's okay."
You were surprised. You didn't think he'd take it so well, but you weren't going to complain.
So the evening began with a secret revealed. You didn't hesitate to stay close to Jake, even ending up on his lap when the bar was full. You listened to their adventures from the last few months - at least what they were allowed to share.  It was good to be with them again, to find that comfort.  After Mickey bought his round, he turned to you. "Well, let's ask the burning question: how long are you staying?" "To tell you the truth... I'm not leaving. I'm moving into my little house 10 minutes from here tomorrow," you smiled. "And you didn't tell me?!" said Jake and Bob at the same time, making them blush under the laughter of the others. "I wanted to surprise you! I've got a new deal with my label, so I can stay here." "Cheers to that! To the definitive return of Y/N Nemesis Floyd," Bradley decreed, raising his beer.
You all laughed and toasted each other, happy with the news.
All was finally well.
You had finally found your place, and you wouldn't change it for the world.

You and Bradley planned a low-key Thanksgiving for the family. It was going to be a laid back and cozy night.
All the kids were asleep while all the adults started to make dinner. It was going to be an early night since everyone had to work early the next morning.
Austin made his famous stuffing. He had brought it the year prior and it had to be the best stuffing you and Bradley had ever had in your lives.
Phoenix made a a potato casserole along with some green beans.
Hangman worked on the turkey, making sure it was pure perfection. (Like himself)
You made mashed potatoes, gravy, and Mac and cheese.
Bradley started to set up the table. He put out the best cutlery you and him had in the house, as well as the best looking plates. The ones that weren’t stained nor microwaved burned from the men of the house.
Bradley wrote name tags for everyone and set each of them on a plate at the table. He grabbed a jar and labeled it “What I am Grateful For.” And placed it in the middle of the table.
“Thanksgiving dinner for brunch is the best idea we’ve ever came up with.” Hangman laughed as he was basting the turkey with broth and butter. “This baby is almost ready!”
Bradley laughed and smiled. “I am so ready to eat. I missed dinner last night so I could be an endless pit today.”
Phoenix scoffed as she finished laying out her dishes she repaired. “You’re always and endless pit, Bradshaw. You and your kids!” She slapped his shoulder as she set the dishes onto the table.
You came over and looked at the table. Bradley had set out some little pumpkins left over from Halloween. He lit a couple of candles, he set put the nice silverware and plates. He put out 2 variances of wine glasses. (Plastic ones for the kiddos) Each plate had everyone’s name on it. It was so cute and simple.
You kissed his cheek. “Thank you for setting the table, Brad.” You placed the Gravy onto the table as Bradley went to grab the mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese.
As everyone started to lay their dishes onto the table, you and Bradley went upstairs to get the kiddies ready. Everyone decided that Thanksgiving themed pajamas were the move.
The boys wore matching turkey onesies, Leia wore a “bring on the leftovers” pajama, Bradley wore a pajama that was full of turkeys, you wore a pajama set that was covered in cute coffees, lattes, pies, and pumpkins.
You and Bradley brought down the kids. The boys were strong enough to start sitting on their own in their high chairs. So you and Bradley placed them into each of theirs. Leia pranced around and looked at all the food that was laid out for everyone.
“GOSH I AM SO HUNGRY!” Leia was so excited. “You and me both, sweetheart.” Bradley picked up Leia and kissed her cheek over and over again.
Everyone started to make their way downstairs.
Phoenix wore an oversized pajama set that said, “official pumpkin pie tester.”
Austin wore a grey pajama set with pumpkin pies all over it. (Hehehe)
Gunner came running into the kitchen with a onesie that had turkeys, pumpkins, and “happy thanksgiving” written all over it.
You all started to take a seat at the table. Bradley sat at the head of the table. You to the left of him. Next to you was Phoenix followed by Austin and then little Bradley in his high chair next to him. On the other side was going to be Leia, Jake, and then Luke in his high chair.
You were all seated and Bradley looked around for Jake.
“Seresin. Hurry the hell up!” You slapped Bradley’s arm and shook your head. “Sorry, sweetheart.” Bradley cleared his throat. “MOVE YOUR ASS, SERESIN!”
“IM COMING!” Jake yelled from the top of the stairs. You could all hear him making his ay down.
“HO-LY. SHIIIIIT.” Bradley, Leia, and Phoenix all said at the same time as Jake made his way down.
Hangman was in a big turkey onesie. He had the hood on and everything.
“That is one big Turkey.” Austin laughed as he looked at Jake.
“Gobble Gobble these nuts, Bradshaw.” Jake laughed and Bradley spit out his water.
“MY CHILDREN ARE IN THE ROOM.” He lunged for Leia’s ears.
Once you all sat down every one took turns writing what they were grateful for and placed it into the jar.
Bradley jumble the jar and everyone took turns asking out a paper and reading what was on it.
You were first, “I am grateful for being able to spend this holiday season (and everyday) with the people I love.” You smiled and looked around. Austin raised his hand. “Mine. I’m grateful to have you all in my life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
You passed the jar to Phoenix. “I am grateful for being alive and being around those I love the most.” Phoenix looked straight at Bradley. Bradley smiled and nodded at Phoenix. “That be me. I love you guys.”
Phoenix passed the jar to Austin. “I am grateful for food.” Everyone looked slowly at Leia. She started to turn red and giggle. “I AM HUNGRY, OKAY!” She crossed her arms and scowled at everyone as you all laughed.”
Austin gave the jar to Leia. “I am grateful for all my friends and family.” Leia looked up at everyone. Phoenix put her finger up. “Me. I’m grateful for all of you. Life would have been lame if I wasn’t here with you all right now.” She looked at Hangman, “That includes you too, Bagman.” They both laughed.
Leia gave the jar to Hangman. “Here, Uncle Jakey.” He kissed her cheek and pulled out one of the folded papers. “I am grateful for the beautiful family I have been given.” You smiled, “I don’t know where i would have been if I hadn’t met or created any of you. I love you, guys.”
Jake reached over Leia and gave the jar to Bradley. “WELL. We all know who is left.” Jake laughed.
Bradley pulled out the last folded paper. “Let’s see what we’ve got here.” He looked down at it and his smile softened. He looked at Jake and gave him a little nod and he nodded back. Bradley sighed. “I am grateful for saving the man that saved me. Thank you Bradshaw for taking me in as one of your own after all these years. I don’t deserve you, buddy. I am thankful for being able to be a part of his and y/n’s family.” Bradley folded the paper back up and smiled at Hangman.
Jake pushed his lips together and smiled. “Of course you’d get mine. But it’s true. I’ll forever be grateful and thankful that you both have allowed me to be a part of your family. Thank you.” You got up and gave Jake a kiss on the cheek. Bradley smiled, “I couldn’t imagine a life without you, Turkeyman.”
Leia gave Jake a kiss. “I love you, uncle Jakey!”
After all the thanks were given you all ate together reminiscing on what the year had been so far. You were all grateful for everything you were given in the last 11 months.
After dinner, you all cozied up on the couches and Leia chose to watch ‘Addams Family Values.’ Her favorite part was when Wednesday sabotaged the play and burned down the thanksgiving set.

duckie universe
ch 7  ch 9
*************
For the next few days, that turned into weeks, Jake talked to you, getting to know you and your son; and both of you getting to know him in return.
He sometimes caught you and Nick at the picnic table and he would go outside, ignoring his friends’ teasing as he did. He then talked exclusively to Nick, getting the kid to laugh and would occasionally catch you watching him.
Jake really wanted to win you over and show you that he was all in, that he wanted to love you and your son.
And you could see that.
********
You, Jake, and Nick were on the beach, sitting on towels and facing each other as Nick sat in between your legs and played in the sand. “So, you run on the beach on your days off?” You asked, replying sunscreen to Nick’s arms and back. Jake nodded and took a sip from the water you had given him, “Yeah, it’s nice. You know, run a few miles, cool off in the ocean, run half the distance and do a cool down walk the last half.”
“And I assume you like the added difficulty because of the sand. You seem to like to challenge yourself.” Jake chuckled and nodded, “Yeah, yeah, I do like to challenge myself.”
You smiled and put the sunscreen away, “Challenge paves the way for change and can make you better. If you know you can do something, you aren’t really challenging yourself are you?”
Jake’s smile matched yours, “No, no you aren’t. But mental challenges and physical challenges are different. Like I know-” He pointed to his head, “-that I can run 8 miles. I’ve done it before, I know I can do it. But is my body going to let me or is it going to try and stop me from finishing my run.”
Before you can speak, Nick gasped as he dug in the sand.
“What did you find bubba?” Jake asked immediately with interested eyes.
You smiled and looked down at Nick’s hands as he held a shell in them. “That’s so cool Nicky!” You said as he showed Jake.
“Look Han’man, a shell!” Jake grinned and held his hand out, “That so neat! Can I hold it?” Nick nodded and put the shell in Jake’s much larger hand, turning what looked like a big shell into a normal sized, or even small, shell.
Nick giggled as Jake carefully held the shell. You played with Nick’s blond hair, “You gonna add it to your collection bubba?” “Can I, Mama?” He asked, looking up at you hopefully. “Of course sweetheart.”
“Oh, wait, hold on
” Jake objected gently. “I don’t think you can add this one Nicky.”
The toddler turned to Jake, pouting, “But.. why?”
Jake felt his heart twist at the pout on the little boy’s face, tears threatening his teal eyes. He didn’t like it when kids cried, especially if he’s the reason.
But he saw this as a learning moment for the 3 year-old.
“Well, come take a look Nicky,” Jake said as he shifted and Nick scooted closer. “Look in there, do you see it?”
Nick tilted his head and leaned in closer to the shell in the pilot’s hands. You leaned as well, curious as to what Jake was talking about.
That’s when you saw the little legs and pinchers curled up inside the shell’s opening. “Oooh, I see. Do you see it baby?” You rubbed Nick’s arms as he looked closer and huffed, “I don’t see anything!”
Then the little hermit crab peaked its head out and started to walk around on Jake’s palm.
Nick squealed and got in your lap, a little scared by the new creature. “It’s okay Nicky. It won’t hurt you,” you reassured him. “What is it?” Nick asked in a hushed whisper, leaning a little closer and becoming more intrigued.
“It’s called a hermit crab,” Jake explained. “Hermit cwab?” Jake nodded, “Yeah, they like to hide in their shells and be alone sometimes. And something that’s really cool is that they get new shells when they outgrow their old ones.”
“Ooooo,” Nick awed as he looked even closer at the little crab.
You smiled as Jake continued to talk to Nick about the sea life in his hand.
Nick loved the water and the beach. He loved to collect shells and give them to people on their birthdays or when he thought they looked sad, because shells made him happy and he figured they would make other people happy too. He loved marine life too, turtles and sharks mostly. But you now had a feeling hermit crabs would be added to the list.
“So, since hermit crabs make some types of shells their homes. You always need to check and make sure that the shell is empty before you take it home,” Jake told your son as he sat the little hermit in the sand and watched it scurry off.
Nick nodded curtly and saluted Jake, “Aye aye, Capan Han’man!” Jake grinned and saluted back. Nick ran over in the hermit and squatted down to watch it scurry and dig in the sand, making you and Jake fall into a fit of giggles.
You calmed down and smiled at Jake again, admiring the way the morning sun made his hair shine and the sweat made his skin glow like Adonis.
“Um, there’s a farmers market just downtown this weekend. Would you want to
” You trailed off feeling a little forward for asking and anticipating the turn down.
But Jake looked at you curiously, wanting you to finish your question.
You smiled nervously and started to lift sand into your hand before letting it fall through your fingers. “Would you want to go with me?”
“It’s totally okay if you don’t! I’m sure you have plans or want to spend time with your pilot buddies. I just wanted to offer,” you spat out after your question before Jake could answer.
You braced yourself for the sympathetic smile before the decline of your offer, but all you received was a genuine smile with a nonchalant shrug. “Sure, sounds like fun,” he smiled at you, his green eyes shining before he covered them with his sunglasses.
Smiling, you let out a relaxed breath before looking back at your son.
“Hey Nicky wanna get in the water now?”
He nodded vigorously, “Yes Mama!”
****
As the morning turned into afternoon, the forecasted rain clouds rolled in.
“I think that’s our cue,” Jake chuckled as he pointed at the sky. He needed to get back to his room and study, since they had to take the day because of the weather, but he loved hanging out with you and Nick and really didn’t want it to end.
“I think our cue was Nick getting fussy at the sand on his feet. He got really tired after lunch, and all the playing and sand castles. So thank you for that, Jake,” you smiled as you started to pack up.
He smiled and helped you, “My pleasure, I’m sure he’ll go down easy for a nap.” You nodded, “Oh he will. As soon as I get him in the bath, I’m sure he’ll be falling asleep.”
Once everything was packed, you slipped your swimsuit cover back on.
“That’s a really nice color on you by the way,” Jake complimented as he shook out your towel and folded it before repeating the process with the other.
You looked down at your yellow cover up and smiled, “Thank you!” He smiled before picking up what he could hold, “You’re welcome. But I mean, you look good in about every color I’ve seen you in.. but yellow just really makes you glow.”
The heat that warmed your cheeks went deeper than the sunburn as you giggled a little.
“This was my mom’s actually. She loved the color yellow,” you smiled as you smoothed over the dress. Jake smiled, “She’s got good taste.”
You smiled wider before unlocking your car. “You can just put it in the back, I’ll be there in just a second.” Jake nodded, “Yes ma’am.” He smirked at the lip bite you tried to hide as you turned around.
“Nicky! Come on bubba, we gotta go home.”
Nick stomped his little foot, “Wanna stay!”
You crossed your arms, “Nick, we gotta go. It’s gonna rain.” He continued to play in the sand, “I like rain Mama.”
You sighed and hung your head before going to him.
“Okay, you get two options,” you held up two fingers. “We go home and we can have a movie day for the rest of the day. Or we go home and we can read by the window. But we are going home, it’s not safe to be on the beach in a storm.”
He pouted and continued to dig in the sand, “Don’t wanna go home
”
You knelt in the sand and gently made him look at you, “Why don’t you wanna go home?” “My hermit cwab
” Nick said, tears pooling as his lip quivered.
“Oooh,” you nodded, realizing why he was so upset. “You don’t wanna leave your buddy, do you?” He shook his head and sniffled, “Wanna take him home
”
You sighed. You understood how he felt. When you were his age, maybe younger, you watched ducklings in a pond at the park and when one let you pick it up, you didn’t want to put it down.
Then your parents told you that you had to leave the park, you cried and cried because you didn’t want to leave your new friend. But your dad found a way to make you feel a bit better.
“Hey, Nicky?” He wiped his eyes as he sniffled and looked at you. “How about I take a picture of you and your hermit crab? That way you have him with you?”
His eyes lit up, “Reawy?” You nodded and pulled out your dad’s polaroid that you had brought with you, “Yeah bub, let’s find him.”
You and Nick dug in the sand for a little bit and you found the little crab. “I found him bubba!” Nick gasped and giggled, “Bootles!”
Your brow furrowed as you laughed, “Bootles?” Nick nodded, “His name is Bootles!” You smiled, “That’s a very good name baby.”
“Okay, hold your hands out. And remember, be gentle,” you instructed as you placed the small crab in his hands. “Okay, say hermit crab!”
“Hermit cwaaaaab!”
He grinned and held the crab by his face as you snapped the photo.
You pulled out your phone and snapped a few more photos while the polaroid developed. “Okay baby, we need to head home.”
Nick nodded, “Bye Bootles!” He placed a little kiss to the shell before sitting the crab down and watching the creature scurry off.
He ran over to you as you put the camera away and looked at the developed photo, “Let’s go home Mama.” You smiled, “Alright baby.”
You smiled at the photo and put it in your bag before standing and holding your hand out, “C’mon Nicky.” He pouted a bit before making grabby hands at you, “Don’ wanna walk.” You sighed and rolled your eyes playfully, “Okay baby.” You grunted a little as you picked him up, “Let’s go home.”
Adjusting your bag, you trekked up the sand back to your vehicle, keeping Nick up on your hip.
By the time you get to your car, Nick was fast asleep on your shoulder.
“Little man all tuckered out?” Jake asked as he put the last of your things in the back of your vehicle.
You giggled, “Yes, very tuckered out. I’m really considering just a movie so he can sleep through it.” Jake smiled and opened the back door for you, “That way you can have a nap too.”
“Oh no, I have so much to do today,” you said as you put Nick in his carseat. Jake nodded, “So, this was your desired outcome?”
You looked at him over your shoulder and giggled a bit, “Is that bad?”
Jake shook his head as he gently shut the door, “No, it’s strategic. Take him to the beach, tucker the little guy out, get home and make sure he’s asleep, and then boom, you’ve got him out of your hair for a little bit to do what you need to do.”
“I feel like he might catch on eventually, but I will milk this strategy until then,” you laughed as you got in the driver’s seat. Jake laughed as well as he leaned on the top of the car and the door, “A mama’s gotta do what a mama’s gotta do.”
You smiled and nodded, looking at Nick sleeping in the rearview mirror.
Looking back up at Jake, you found him already smiling at you. “Thank you for today Jake,” you said softly, your cheeks heating up a bit. “Nick had a lot of fun.”
“What about you?” Jake asked, with a hint of hopefulness in his tone.
You nodded. You had had fun today, Jake was making you laugh and blush, and you started feeling something you hadn’t felt in years.
And if you were completely honest, it was starting to scare you. But there was just something about this that you couldn’t let go of; no matter how scared you were. However, you had to go slow and be careful, for both the sake of your heart and the sake of your son’s heart.
“I had a lot of fun today Jake. Thank you,” you smiled up at him. “Though, I am sorry that you had to stop your run.”
He shook his head, “Don’t worry about that. I can go to the gym on base and hit the treadmill. Maybe the stairmaster.”
You giggled, “Well, I hope you have fun with that.”
“What time should I pick you up this weekend?”
You blinked at him confused for a second before you remembered, “Oh right right! Um, does 0830 sound good?” He nodded and smiled, “Sounds perfect. I’ll see you then.”
“Here let me get you my address,” you said before digging in the console for a pen and sticky notes.
Once you found them and wrote down your address, you gave the sticky note to Jake.
“I’ll see you then?” Jake nodded and smiled, “See you then.”
You nodded back and smiled, “Alright, have a good rest of your day Lieutenant.” “You too, mama.”
He closed your door and watched you drive off before looking down at the yellow sticky note, “I need to find out what flowers she likes
”
**********
A few days later you’re getting ready for your trip to the farmer’s market with Jake.
Now this wasn’t a date, no not at all. Just an outing between friends. Time for you to get to know Jake when he wasn’t around Nick. But it was not a date.
****
You applied your mascara in the floor length mirror in your room, humming a song to yourself as you did so.
“Maaamaaa?” Your toddler called from your bed.
“Yeees Nicky?” You asked as you screwed the lid back onto your mascara.
“Why can’t I go wiff you and Han’man?” He asked as he bounced on your bed.
You sighed a bit and caught him, “Because, mama and Hangman are going to be walking about in the heat and sweating, it wouldn’t be fun for you baby.” You grinned and began to tickle him, “I think Hayden and Serenity have a lot of fun things planned for today.”
He giggled and curled up to escape your hands, “Ah! Mama!” You laughed and continued to tickle him as he flopped onto the bed. You kissed all over his face, “Mwah! Mwah! Mwah!”
You pulled back and took a breath, “Okay baby, Mama has to finish getting ready.” Nick giggled and starfished in the middle of the bed and you went to your bathroom. “You wanna help mama brush her hair?”
Nick nodded, “Yeah!” He rolled onto his stomach and slid into the floor before going into the bathroom.
****
“Duckie, you look good. You sure this isn’t a date?”
“Yes, Hayden, I’m very sure this isn’t a date. I actually have a list of things to look for,” you said, matter of factly.
Hayden put his hands up, “Okay, okay
But I mean you look-” “Hayden, you’re pressing,” Serenity said as she played with Nick.
“Right, sorry. But still, you look great, Duckie.”
You smiled and ruffled his hair, “Thank you Hayden.” You slipped on your shoes and clipped your hair up with a claw clip.
“Okay, I’ve still got fifteen min-” Your sentence is cut short by tires in your driveway. You chuckled, “Military man, should have guessed he’d be early.”
You waited for a honk or something but one never came.
But, then there was a gentle knock on your door.
Your heart rate elevated and you couldn’t hide the grin as you went to open the door.
“Jake,” you said a little breathlessly, smiling as you took in his appearance.
His blond hair wasn’t gelled, allowing it to fluff and rest against his forehead. The green checkered shirt he was wearing matched his eyes and showed off his biceps and tanned arms. His light wash jeans hugged the tops of his thighs but were loose the rest of the way down and bunched around his ankles, brandishing his brown cowboy boots with the contrast.
“You look
good,” you smiled, eyes trailing back up to his eyes.
He chuckled, smiling to show off his forming smile lines, “So do you, Y/N.”
You felt the heat on your face as you bit your lip and looked at your shoes bashfully
“Han’man?”
You turned as Jake looked around you and inside.
“Nicky, hey buddy,” Jake smiled as Nick ran over. Nick wrapped his arms around Jake’s leg, “G’moorrnniing!”
Jake squatted down to give him a proper hug, “Good mornin’ little man!”
Nick put his hands on Jake’s shoulders, “Have fun wiff Mama today! I not going cause Mama said I would get too hot and I wouldn’t have fun. So, I’m playing with Hay and Ren today!”
“Well that sounds fun, and I promise your mom and I will have fun. I’ll make sure she gets home safe.”
Nick nodded before running back to the living room as Jake stood back up.
You smiled and looked at the floor before looking up at Jake, catching the flowers in his hand. “You-you brought me flowers?”
He furrowed his brow before looking at the bouquet in his hand, “Oh! Yeah, yeah, I did. I hope that’s okay. I know this isn’t r-really a date, but-”
“Jake, Jake!” He looked back up at you and you smiled softly, “They’re lovely, thank you.” You gently took them from him, your hands brushing together and making you both blush.
“Would you like to come in for some coffee? We’ve got about thirteen minutes before we need to leave,” you offered, holding the flowers to your chest. He smiled, “Sure, that sounds great. Thank you.” You smiled and led him into your home, “Kitchen’s this way.”
“Where do you keep your vases?” Jake asked once you got to the kitchen. “Oh, um, I think they’re under the sink.” Jake nodded and looked under the sink, “Ah-ha! Gotcha!”
He stood up, “This one okay?” You turned from the drawer you were digging in to see the tall mason jar. “Oh yeah that’s perfect.” He nodded and stood to rinse it out and filled it before sitting it on the island.
“Thank you, Jake,” you said as you smiled, putting the cut stems into the water.
You turned to the cabinet, “Iced coffee or hot coffee?” “Hot if you got it.” You nodded and grabbed a mug and poured him a cup.
“Here you go, there’s sugar and dry creamer, liquid creamer is in the fridge, if you want it,” you told him before grabbing your mason jar glass and opening the fridge.
He thanked you before adding a little bit of sugar. “So, have they done this farmer’s market before? Or is this like a new thing?”
“Oh they’ve done it before, started back when I was a kid. They took off for a while, started it back up a few years ago. Actually the year before I moved back.”
He nodded and sipped his coffee as you sirred yours.
“And a lot of the booths are military families.”
“Oh really? That’s cool.”
“I think there’s a care package booth too. They
They um,” you smiled a little to yourself. “They put it together right there in front of you. My mom would get one made for my uncle every year if he was deployed when we went.”
Jake smiled, “You said your brother was on deployment right?” You nodded back, “Mhmm.” “Well we need to make sure we stop by that booth.”
You looked up at him, “Wait really?” He nodded and sat his mug down, “Of course. I can tell that you and your brother are close, even though I may or may not know him.”
You snorted a bit, “Right, I haven’t told you about him. Honestly, I’m surprised you didn’t ask Penny about him.” He crossed his arms and shrugged, “I won’t lie, I did want to ask. Buuuut, I figured you’ll tell me when you want me to know. I’m not entitled to that information.”
And there were the butterflies again.
Yeah, he did the bare minimum and didn’t try to find out more about you through other people. But the fact he was willing to admit it and be upfront with you was something you really liked, especially after being with Chad.
“Thank you,” you said before sipping your coffee. Maybe today you should tell him; just let him know in case there is any tension between them and if that’s a turn off to being friends, or more.
“Of course.”
You both smiled and continued to drink your coffee and talk for the next fifteen-ish minutes.
“We should probably get going, it opens at 0900 and it takes about 30-45 minutes to get there,” you said when you noticed the time on the microwave.
Jake nodded and rinsed his cup out, “Where do you want this?” You blinked for a second, a little surprised he didn’t just leave it in the sink. “Oh um,” you checked the dishwasher and saw that it was full. “You can just leave it in the sink, I’ll wash it when I get home.”
“Nonsense,” he waved you off and pointed to your glass. “Are you done?” You looked down, “Oh yeah.” You dumped out the ice and put the jar in the basin, “I’ll wash it. It’s not a big deal.”
Jake ignored you and grabbed the rag. “Jake, you don’t have to do that.” “It’s not a problem. You invited me in for coffee, it’s the least I could do. And plus, it’s two dishes.”
You smiled gently at him, “Thank you.” He smiled back and watched you go to the living area.
“Nick, come give Mama a hug.”
****
You and Jake walked past the booths, laughing and stopping when you see something that is on your list.
“Hey, isn’t honey on your list?” Jake asked, stopping as he saw a table full of jars of honey. You hummed and looked down at your list. “Oh, yes! Yes it is.”
Jake smiled as you came over, smiling as you looked at the jars.
“Hi, how can I help you?” The lady behind the table asked with a sweet smile.
Jake watched you smile back, just as sweet. “Hi, I was just wondering what flavors you had?” “Oh we have regular, orange blossom, and lemon honey syrup.”
You bit your lip, “Man, I want all of them..” You looked down at your list. “Okay, I’ll take a pint of regular honey and the lemon honey syrup.” She smiled and grabbed the two, “Is that all?” You nodded and pulled out your wallet, “Yes, for now, I may swing by before we leave.”
She nodded as she wrapped them in tissue paper before putting them in a little crate then into a paper bag.
“That’ll be twelve dollars.” You smiled and handed her the cash, “There you go.”
“Thank you, you two have a good day.” “You too thank you.”
You looked back at your list, “Fruits are next and then care package and then roam the crafts.” Jake chuckled and nodded, “Okay, I’ll catch up in a second.”
You smiled at him, “Alright.”  You thank the lady again before walking away to the fruit stands.
Jake watched you walk away before turning to the table. “Can I get you anything sir?” “Yes,” he smiled and took out his cash, “I will take two pints of the orange blossom.”
The woman gave him a slightly knowing smile as she did what she did with yours. “Twelve dollars.”
He smiled again and gave her fifteen, “Here ya go ma’am, keep the change.” She smiled as Jake walked away, “Thank you, have a good day!”
Jake found you at a peach stand, “Peaches?”
Your head whipped up and you smiled at him, “Nick loves them, his dad loved them too.” Jake smiled as he saw that glimmer of love in your eye.
You and Jake held eye contact for a moment, just looking at each other with smiles on your faces.
A baby giggling in the booth next to you knocked you both out of your trance.
Jake jumped a bit and shook it off, “Wha-what do you make with the peaches?”
You giggled and picked through the peaches, “My mom had a cobbler recipe that I love and Nick likes it too. I’ll juice them and make tea. Then other times we just eat them.”
“My grandma makes amazing peach cobbler,” his eyes trailed to the apple stand. “Her apple pie however, is what she’s known for.”
You smiled at him, “So are apples your favorite?” He chuckled and shook his head, “No actually. I love oranges. Always have.”
“Any desserts your mom makes with them?” Jake nodded with a huge smile, “She makes a loaf cake, it’s amazing.” You smiled, “That sounds delicious.”
“I’ll have to make it for you sometime.” You nodded and finished picking out your peaches and giving them to the woman to weigh, “I would like that.”
“Thank you,” you said as you traded eight dollars for the fruit. “Okay, just a few more booths. Then we can go to lunch.”
Jake nodded, “We can check out the food trucks.” “Oh, yeah! But if we get snow cones we can’t tell Nick
or Hayden.” You and Jake laughed as he made a zipper motion over his lips, “My lips are sealed.”
You nodded, “Thank you.” You grabbed his hand, “C’mon let’s go.” He grinned as you pulled him along, fruit stand to fruit stand.
****
“Okay, let’s go get that care-”
“Miss Bradshaw!”
You turned over your shoulder, “Oh Cheyenne! Hi, how are you?” “Good, I’m good. How are you?” You nodded and smiled as you walked over to her booth, Jake right behind you, “I’m good, Cheyenne.”
“Nicky not with you today?” She asked as she stood up. “Oh no, he’s with Hayden and Serenity today. He would have gotten too hot or run around.” She nodded, “I can understand that. Max is the same way. Except he’s seven.”
You and Jake laughed as she huffed with a grin, “Which is why he is at our dad’s house today.”
Then Cheyenne noticed Jake, “Ohh, who is this?” You blushed and looked up at him, “This-This is um, Jake. He’s a pilot for the Navy.” She nodded, “Oh, and he’s your friend right?” Her emphasis on ‘friend’ making you and Jake blush.
You and Jake looked down at the table. “Oh, did you make these?” Jake asked, trying to change the subject.
“I did, and Miss. Bradshaw, I made this for you to send to Bradley.” She held out a crocheted rooster to you. “Oh my goodness, Cheyenne! It’s so cute, he’s gonna love it. Thank you!”
She smiled, “You’re welcome.” You looked up at her, “How much do I owe you?” “Oh, no, Miss. Bradshaw, it’s free.” “Are you sure? You must have spent days on this.” She nodded, “I’m sure.”
You smiled at her again, “Thank you.” Cheyenne nodded back with a smile.
You looked down at the table and saw something, “Awe Nick would love that
but he has so many stuffed animals already.” You bit your lip and bounced on your toes.
After the internal argument you groaned. You wanted to get it for him but you still needed to get Bradley’s care package squared away. “I’ll come back and see if it’s still here.”
Jake watched you walk away and looked at the table. “I think you know what I’m about to ask.”
She laughed, “For little Nick Bradshaw? Five dollars.” “No, don’t do that. How much, actually?” “Ten.” He nodded, “That’s better.” He held out a ten and she put the crocheted animal in a bag.
“Here you go Jake.” “Thank you, have a good day,” he smiled and walked toward the care package booth.
“Jake?” Cheyenne said as she came up to him.
“Yes?”
“She likes you. A lot. I can tell in the way she looks at you.”
Jake smiled and looked over at you, “I like her a lot too.” Cheyenne smiled and nodded before going back to her booth.
He chuckled and shook his head, his heart feeling a little lighter that he wasn’t seeing things when you looked at him.
He made it to the booth as you were finishing up.
“Bradley is going to love this, Y/N!” You nodded with a smile, “I know and can you put this in there? It’s from Nick.” “Oh of course, I bet Rooster loves getting these shells from his nephew.” You smiled again, “Yeah, he sends some back from Virginia Beach sometimes. Or wherever they’ve docked.”
The woman behind the table smiled, “That’s so sweet. Let me get this totalled up for you, I’ll be right back.”
You nodded and turned as you saw Jake approach.
“Got it all sorted?” You nodded, “Sure did.”
He smiled down at you, his hand moving to rest on your lower back, but he forced it down. “So, roaming the crafts is next?”
You nodded, “Yes! And then lunch.” “Sounds fantastic,” he grinned at you as you smiled up at him.
“Thank you for coming with me today Jake.”
“Of course, I’m having a lot of fun actually.”
You nodded and smiled wider to match his smile, “I’m having a lot of fun too.”
****
“Okay I have a question,” Jake proposed as he sat down with his burger and fries.
You froze a bit, before nodding as you sat next to him, “What’s up?”
“Well, it’s not so much of a question as it is like a statement that could wind up being a question,” he rambled with a fry in his hand.
You giggled, “What is it, Jake?”
“I think I know your brother.” You stayed silent but nodded. “Now here’s the question, is it Bradley Bradshaw, a.k.a Rooster?”
You sighed and nodded, “Yeah, that’s my brother.”
He nodded, “We were in flight school together.” “Really?” He nodded again and took a bite of his burger, “He wasn’t the biggest fan of me to be honest.”
You shifted a little as you brushed salt off your pretzel, “Oh
” You cleared your throat, “Does that- does that change-” You point between you and Jake, “This?”
“No, no not at all. I don’t care how your brother feels about me, I care about how you feel about me.”
You nodded again and opened your mouth to speak but he continued.
“And I totally understand if his opinion matters to you and you-”
“Jake, stop.” You cut him off and held your hands up, making him stop talking. “Take a breath.” He nodded and inhaled.
You giggled, “Okay, now yes, my brother’s opinion matters to me. But I’m also a big girl and can make my own choices. From what I’ve seen, from what you’ve shown me, you’re a good guy, Jake. A great guy. That matters more.”
“Really?”
“Yes! Jake, in flight school, you and my brother were basically rivals. No one is a fan of their rival.”
“I guess that’s true,” Jake smiled.
“And as long as you two don’t fight in front of my son and keep the jabs and smartass comments to a minimum around me, I think we can make it work.”
He nodded, “For you, I can do that.”
You smiled and nodded, “Good. Now let’s eat.”
****
Jake parked his truck in your driveway, “Let me walk you to the door.”
You smiled and unbuckled, the door opening as your hand reached for the handle. “Thank you Jake.” “Of course.”
You grabbed your bags and Jake walked with you to the door.
You sat your bags down and pulled out your keys.
“Is that a duck key chain?” Jake asked, his head tilted with a smile gracing his lips. You nodded and smiled at him, “Yes, it is.” He held it in his hand, a small twinkle in his eye, “It’s adorable.”
“Thank you, my uh
my nickname has been Duckie ever since I was two. My dad had gotten me a duck stuffed animal and I would not let go of that thing,” you said with a light laugh.
Jake smiled at you, “That’s really sweet.” You nodded and unlocked your door.
You opened it and turned back to Jake, “I had fun today.” He blushed and smiled, “I had fun today too.”
“Mama!”
You and Jake looked down as Nick ran to you.
You bend down and pick him up, “Nicky baby! Did you have fun with Hayden and Serenity today?” He nodded and looked at Jake, “I did Mama! Did you and Han’man have fun?”
Jake chuckled and tickled Nick’s ribs, “We did little man! And I brought you something back.”
Nick gasped and your brow furrowed as Jake pulled something out of the bag you hadn’t realized he was holding.
Your jaw dropped when he pulled out the crocheted manta ray with a little cowboy hat; the one you saw and wanted to get Nick but was gone when you had gone back by the table.
“Jake-”
“That’s for me?” Nick gasped as Jake nodded and smiled. “It is Nick!” “I wove it! Thank you Han’man!” Nick stretched out of your arms to hug Jake, which Jake gladly did with his free arm. “You’re welcome, Nicky.”
Jake put him down and Nick looked up at you, “I’m gonna put this on my bed, Mama! With my turtle!” You smiled and ran a hand through his curls, “Alright baby, have you had lunch yet?” He nodded, “Okay. I’ll be in in a minute and we can Octopus.” “Okay!”
You and Jake chuckled as he ran in and to his bedroom.
You looked up at Jake, “Jake, you didn’t have to get that for him.” He nodded and looked at the bag, “I know I didn’t. But I wanted to.”
“Well, thank you Jake. He’s gonna cherish that little cowboy manta ray.” Jake blushed and looked through the door, “You think so?” “He’s putting it on his bed with his turtle, the turtle his dad had when he was a kid,” you said, tearing up slightly as you smiled.
Jake’s heart clenched at your tears but it fluttered because Nick thought of him so highly.
“So yeah, I think he’ll cherish it,” you smiled softly as you messed with his shirt a little.
“I got you something too,” he said as he reached into the bag and pulled out the jar of orange blossom honey.
You smiled and took the jar gently, “Jake
”
“You said you wanted to get all of them, and I wanted to get some orange blossom honey-” You looked up at him, the smile still on your face, “‘Cause you love oranges.” He nodded, a smile matching yours, “Yeah, and I really think you’ll like it.”
“Thank you, Jake. And it’s a good thing I went back to that booth, cause I remember you asking about the syrup
” You pulled out the jar, “So I got you some.”
He took the jar and smiled, “Thank you, Y/N.” You nodded, “You’re welcome. It works great in teas and even water. Maybe whiskey, but you didn’t hear that from me. It’ll help with sore throat as well, works with Nick great.”
Jake chuckled, “Ever wanna know if something works, you ask a mother.” You nodded and held the jar close to you.
“Thank you again Jake, for coming with me today.”
He smiled and nodded, mirroring your actions with his jar, “Thank you for inviting me. It probably sounds a little silly but
it felt like I was back home for a few hours.”
You shook your head, “That doesn’t sound silly at all.” You smiled softly at him, “It sounds really sweet.”
“Thank you,” he said softly with a grin on his face.
You went on your tip-toes and kissed his cheek, “Have a good afternoon Jake. Thank you for today. We should do this again.” He nodded and watched your lips as you went back to your flat feet, “We should. I’ll figure something out and we can talk about it.”
You nodded, “That sounds great. I’ll see you later, Jake.” “See you later, Y/N.”
You and Jake smiled at each other for a moment before you shook yourself out of it and went inside, waving bye again as you closed the door.
Jake smiled and looked at the jar before walking to his truck.
****
Once you closed the door you leaned against it.
You sighed and looked at your jar, smiling like a fool with your heart fluttering like you were a teenage girl before groaning as you heard his truck leave.
“Shit
I forgot to get his number
”
*************
duckie and jake got to spend a day with out nick. it wasn’t a date, just a nice friendly hang- who is duckie kidding, it was totally a date
and jake got to learn who her brother was, but that doesn’t matter to him. what matters is how duckie feels and how nick feels about him, not bradley.
so now they’re planning another ‘hangout’ and let’s see if they can finally cross that path into being more than friends

DANCING WITH OUR HANDS TIED: JAKE SERESIN X READER
Summary; Hailey "Frost" Bradshaw has always known what she wanted to do with her life. To be like her father, to become the best pilot alongside her brother.
When she's called back to Top Gun, everything changes, including her feelings for a certain pilot. Jake "Hangman" Seresin. A cocky, arrogant asshole who knew how to get under her skin.
Tumblr media
Warning(s): cursing, pining, slow burn.
Today was the day. Top Gun, a place where Hailey never thought she'd come back. She had her hair pushed back in a low sleek bun. There weren't any seats left, the only seat available was next to the most annoying person in the world. Hangman.
"Seresin." Hailey's voice was stern. She never really had any emotions in her voice whenever she spoke to him. Usually it was laced with anger, or rage. Then other days, emotionless.
She was called Frost because of that reason. She was good at ignoring those who tried to put her down. Though at night, she'd cry to herself at night. Overthinking everything in her life, somehow there was a little voice in her head saying she was meant to be here. A voice she was all too familiar with. Goose, her father.
She cleared her throat as she sat down next to him. She tried her best not to feel nervous, the way she could feel his warmth against her clothed skin. She wishes she wasn't in her uniform, that she could feel his touch against her skin.
"Nervous Bradshaw?" She could hear the smirk in his voice. She didn't even look at him to know that he had one on his lips.
"Fuck you." Once again she couldn't think of a comeback. And it was frustrating for her.
"Anytime." She couldn't help but roll her eyes, clenching her fists together in annoyance.
"In your dreams."
"You're in all my dreams sweetheart." She felt her stomach ache with butterflies. He didn't sound like his playful-teasing self, but he sounded more serious.
Hailey wouldn't admit it out loud, but she's been in love with the man ever since day one. The flirting, the lingering looks the two give each other, the way their bodies get so close during every petty argument. There were many moments where the two almost broke their pettiness and kissed.
"I'm Admiral Bates, NAWC commander. Welcome to your special training detachment. You're all top gun graduates, the elites, best of the best-" Hailey hummed with a proud grin gracing her lips. She was very well aware of how good of a pilot she was.
Her cockiness ended when she felt Hangman's arm resting behind her, as he leaned a bit closer to her to where their shoulders barely touched, but she was able to feel his warmth.
"That was yesterday, you've all spent your career flying close to air support for troops on the ground with little to no air-to-air threat." He continued.
Hailey felt her skin tickle when she noticed that Hangman had gotten closer to her. His hair tickled the side of her face slightly when he tilted his head.
"What are you doing?" She harshly whispered, getting hot under his touch.
"What do you mean?" He Dumbly asks, a knowing smirk on his lips.
"You know what I mean." She whispered.
"Can we talk after?" He sounded serious, Hailey sighed knowing he would try to find her even if she said no.
"Mhm." She hums in response. She frowned slightly, but she tried not to show it in front of Hangman when he leaned away from her. She misses the feeling of his body heat against hers, the way she could smell his cheap cologne.
"This mission requires two F-18 Echo solo pilots and two foxtrot dual-seat teams. Half of you will make the cut, half will remain in reserve. One of you will be named mission leader." Hailey's head perked up at that. She knew she was going to make it as leader, she had two people to compete against. Her brother, and Hangman.
Hailey leaned her lips near his ear.
"You scared cowboy?" She teased, using his nickname that she always used.
She was the only one who was allowed to call him that. Anyone else who tries would get one hell of a death glare.
"In your dreams." He mocked.
She smirks, with a humorous laugh.
"You're in all of my dreams, twinkletoes." Hangman quickly turned his head in her direction.
"Twinkletoes? That's a new one." Hailey shrugged her shoulders, she herself didn't know where that came from but she thought it was funny.
"Wanted to try something different." She said with a wink.
Before the two could continue they're conversations Hailey froze.
"What's wrong?" Hailey's body heated up in rage. She didn't want to believe that Maverick was here. But she didn't know that her anger would spike up this quickly.
After what he's done to her and her brother, after pulling their papers she wanted to skin him alive for what he's done.
She ignored Hangman's worried gaze. He looked behind her to see Rooster. He has the same look. His eyes narrowed, his face and ears just as flushed with the same rosy red cheeks as Hailey's. Hangman turned back around to see that it had something to do with the man standing in front of their very eyes. Maverick. The Maverick. The man that had been known to be the greatest, yet irresponsible pilot.
"Good morning." Hailey held her harsh glares at the older man.
The two make eye contact. Dark blue eyes meeting chocolate brown.
Hailey quickly averted her gaze when she felt a large hand grabbing one of hers. She looked up to see Hangman grabbing her hand. She didn't know how to feel, but the one thing is she felt a surge of comfort. Her anger subsided very slightly, as she gave the man a soft smile.
"The uh, the F-18 NATOPS, it contains everything there is to know about your aircraft. What's the load limit of three F-18?" Hailey beat Hangman to it.
"7.5Gs. Section four, chapter seven." Maverick nodded his head. Hailey had a smirk gracing her lips knowing she was right. She was always right.
She grabbed the rose gold Aviators that were resting on her lap and put them on her eyes. She still held the same smirk.
"Max airspeed?" Once again Hailey responded.
"Mach 1.8. Section two, chapter one." Hangman was impressed. The way she could say the answers with such confidence, the way she just easily slips them out of her mouth.
Hailey was just like Maverick, most of her life she was raised by him after the death of her father. She was always close to the man, until he pushed back both of their papers. She was just like him, reckless, always getting into trouble by the Admirals. The opposite of her father and her mother. Goose was right, she did take after her Uncle.
"Okay, here's another one." Hailey was enjoying every second of this. Her cocky nature is getting the best of herself.
"Lift limit? " She didn't even think. It's like she's studied her whole life for this, and in reality. She did.
"34 Alpha. C'mon old man, give me a harder one." She waved her hand wanting a better question.
Maverick could see how much she's like him. He curses Goose in his mind.
"Maximum roll rate."
"Two hundred and twenty five degrees. Per second." She crosses her leg over her lap, her grin never leaving.
"Maximum after burner."
"42,000 pounds of thrust."
"Max rate of climb, everyone."
"Forty-five thousand feet per minute." Hangman loved the confidence, how smart she was.
Class was finally over. She quickly rushed after Hangman, as they headed towards his truck. Her bike was right next to his black GMC.
"So, you wanted to talk?" She leaned against her bike, careful not to tilt it.
"Yea." He clears his throat.
"What are you doing tomorrow night?" She smirked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Are you asking me on a date Jake?" Jake's face flushed, she's never used his real name before. The way it smoothly rolled off her tongue the way it did.
Hangman steps closer, only two strides. He was face to face with her. Their foreheads are touching. Her breath hitched in her throat.
"You know we can't." She pushed him away slightly, her hand on his hard chest stopping him.
"We've tried before, and it didn't work out." She shakes her head.
"I know, but we're not teenagers anymore." He reasons.
Placing his hands carefully on her waist, not wanting to scare her.
"Nat texted me last night, they're betting on us. See how long it'll take till we finally get back together." Jake snickers, his lips ghosting hers.
"How much?" He was intrigued.
"50 bucks." He raises his eyebrows.
"I want Nat to win. I love my brother dearly, but I love seeing him lose." Jake raises his hands from her waist, to her hips. She couldn't help the Goosebumps from rising even if she was in her uniform. His hands placed himself on her cheeks.
They still felt the same as they were when they were together. Uncle Ice himself would be partying right now if he saw this. He always knew that the two would get back together. She loved the sky, the feeling of being able to fly and learn what it's like to be a bird. She wishes she could feel the wind whipping her hair and creating little bumps over her skin.
Like right now, she caught him staring at her lips. Then his hazel blue eyes staring back into her brown ones. The same brown eyes like her father.
"Jake." Her voice was soft, he could tell she was scared.
"I don't want to break your heart again." He shakes his head.
"You won't." He promised.
"I talked to Ice last night. He told me you still loved me, that you talk about me everyday. That the only reason why you pretend to hate me is because you love me." Tears brimmed her eyes, his heart clenched at the tears falling down. He was quick to wipe them away.
"Don't let me hurt you again. I won't be able to live with myself if I do." Before he could say a word, she threw her arms around his neck. The kiss was passionate, it was better than their first kiss. This time, this time it was different.
"I love you, Hailey Bradshaw." She couldn't help the smile growing her lips, her pearly whites showing. She could see the love in his ocean eyes. Her eyes held the same affection.
A/N: Should the next chapter be smut? I'm also gonna start with Bradley Bradshaw and a Maverick, and Iceman and Goose. I'm gonna continue my other ones but I have been in the Top Gun mood for a bit. Also I'm gonna make a masterlist tonight.

Aim for the Sky masterlist. This was written to accompany my series Is It Working For You? along with a bunch of my one-shots and other series, but it can be read on its own! Check my masterlist for the reading order.
Tumblr media
"Sweetheart," Bradley sighed. His heart rate finally calmed down after trying several times to reach you by phone. "How are you? How's the Nugget?"
You were quiet for a beat before saying, "We're okay." You did not sound happy, and it was probably because he'd missed several of your calls over the past few days. It wasn't like he meant to, there was just a lot of work and other distractions for him here.
"Yeah? Not amazing?" He couldn't tell if your laugh was one of annoyance, so he plowed on as he stood from the steps outside the barracks, still sweaty from his run. "I'll be home the day after tomorrow, and then I'll take care of Rosie and everything at the house."
You sighed. "First thing we need to do when you get home is talk."
Bradley froze, brow creased in concern as his hand froze on the door handle. "About what?"
Another soft beat of silence. "We'll figure it out when you get back."
"Figure what out?" He didn't know if you were intentionally being vague, but it was irritating him a bit. "Can't we just talk about it now?"
"Shit." He could hear Rose starting to wail in the background, and it sounded like you dropped your phone. "Roo, I need to go. She had another blowout. I love you."
"I love you, too, Baby Girl."
The call ended before he got to tell you about his week. He was hoping you'd ask him about work, but you didn't even check to see if his first few days fully engrossed in his new role were going well.
You were either stressed close to your breaking point, or something else was bothering you. He went back inside to hit the shower, but his thoughts lingered even when the hot water streamed along his skin. Like there was something he was supposed to remember. He couldn't focus on any one thing, which was irritating in itself. He was ready to head home and get back to work in North Island, but he also wanted to make sure he left Texas with everything in order. He and the admirals needed to make their final selections tomorrow, and then he would know who would be joining him in San Diego in a few weeks.
In his opinion, there were ten exceptional pilots here that would be a good fit at Top Gun. Indigo and Rex were at the top of the list with very promising careers ahead of them, and Bradley was looking forward to eventually joining them in the air.
He really wanted to get home to you and Rose, but he had to get through a dinner in his dress blues first. The young pilots would probably be surprised when he finally joined them for a drink.
When he eventually got into bed, he looked through all of the pictures of his daughter on his phone. There were hundreds of them, which seemed impressive for someone just a few months old. Then he scrolled through wedding photos. And then honeymoon photos, not all of which were rated PG.
"Oh, I remember that night," he murmured to himself when he got to a beautiful collection of pictures of you with your ass in the air, looking back at him over your shoulder. "I remember it very well."
Jesus. You looked so good in these photos, it was absolutely insane. Even the PG ones were hotter than hell. But when you wore that red bikini? Perfection. And now he was hard and already searching for the video you and he made together many, many months ago.
He jerked off in the extra long twin bed, getting harder as he watched the recording of him spanking you and calling you his filthy slut. Then he came all over his abs, thinking about how many times he took you rough in his barracks room in San Diego early on in your relationship. When he thought about the Craftsman house he bought for you more than for himself, he couldn't stop smiling. You made it the first home he had since his mom died. And now he had a daughter.
Counting his blessings was pointless when he knew they all came from you. One more long day and he'd be home with his family. He couldn't stop yawning as he cleaned himself up, and he passed out for the night as soon as he was under the covers.
The next day was a flutter of activity. There was a classroom session in the morning that Bradley had to lead. He wasn't used to talking so much and actually found it exhausting. And everywhere he looked around the room, he could feel indigo eyes on him.
Then the afternoon was filled with flight analysis which solidified in his mind the pilots he wanted to select. After a quick conversation with the admirals when everyone else was dismissed, they were all in agreement.
Later that night at dinner, Bradley got to announce to everyone who had been chosen. There were definitely some unhappy expressions, but he was met with Indigo's smile as she shook his hand after the champagne had been served.
"Congratulations," he told her, juggling his champagne flute to his other hand.
"Lieutenant Commander," she replied. "You'll have to let me in on the secret of the best bar in Coronado so I know where to hang out in a few weeks. You found the best one here on your own, after all."
He had to chuckle. He hadn't been back to that bar since his first night in Texas, despite the best efforts of some of the officers. "I have no doubt you'll find it without my help."
She released his hand, eyes roaming his face before settling on his mustache. "I'm sure I will. Are you sticking around for another drink?" she asked hopefully when he set his empty glass on a passing tray.
"Early flight tomorrow morning," he shrugged. "And I'm still not used to this time zone, so I shouldn't. I don't want to miss it."
She nodded once as he turned to leave, and her parting words stuck in his mind. "I can't wait to see you at Top Gun, Lieutenant Commander."
Bradley was going to have to keep an eye on her. He didn't want her trying to gain any sort of advantage over the others. Her gaze was warm on his back as he headed to the silent barracks alone.
--------------------------
The flight to San Diego was turbulent. You would have hated it, but Bradley slept the whole time like a pro. He should have spent the time reading his notes for work on Monday, but he decided it was more important to get a nap in so he could let you rest for the weekend. He had everything planned out on his mind, including making dinner tonight and taking Rose and Tramp for a beach walk tomorrow. That would give you sufficient time to rest.
He was expecting you to look worn out, but when he rushed through baggage claim to find you, he was still surprised by what he found. Rose was crying in your arms, and you looked on the verge of tears yourself. You were wearing one of his ratty shirts he reserved for days he was doing yardwork, and you had on his sweatpants which were rolled up and tied at your waist.
"Baby Girl," he called out, drawing your gaze to his. There was spit up on the burp cloth draped over your shoulder, and Rose seemed to cry louder the closer he got. "Are you okay?"
When you started nodding, it quickly turned into you shaking your head as he got close enough to wrap his arms around both of you. Bradley was immediately lost in the sweet smell of his daughter as he buried his nose against her fuzzy hair and inhaled. He let his lips trail soft kisses along her forehead before taking her from your arms.
"Tell me what's wrong," he whispered, kissing your lips. "Tell me so I can fix it."
He hushed Rose and kept his face close to yours as you cried softly. "Nothing's wrong. Or maybe... I don't know, Roo. I'm fucking pregnant," you sobbed.
Surely he'd misheard. "What did you say?" he gasped, arm wrapping around your waist, pulling you in tighter as you cried and nodded. "You're seriously pregnant?"
"Yes."
"Holy shit." A dizzying smile curled along his lips. "Hell yes!" This was incredible news as far as he was concerned, but you were still crying as your face came to rest against his chest. Then his stomach lurched, because he'd missed several of your calls this week. You must have known for days as you'd been trying to reach him.
He bounced Rose gently in the crook of his arm, listening to her cries soften until she settled against him as well. "Sweetheart. You're not happy about this?"
Your tear streaked cheeks drew his lips as you looked up at him. "I don't know, Bradley," you whispered, voice harsh. "I just don't know what to think at all. I'm sure it happened in La Jolla, when I was supposed to be on the pill."
When your voice broke on a fresh sob, Bradley led you toward his duffle bag which had appeared on the baggage carousel, and he scooped it up seamlessly. Somehow he kept both of his girls close all the way to your red Bronco, his heart hammering the whole time. He was obsessed with his role as a father, and to him this was a best case scenario. He just needed you to understand how he felt about this.
After buckling Rose into her car seat, she was immediately asleep. Then he laced his fingers with yours, leading you around to the passenger side door, kissing your forehead.
"I love you, Sweetheart," he promised, tipping your face up to meet his eyes. "And I'd love another baby. Is this what we needed to talk about?"
"Yeah," you whispered. "This week was so long, and Rose has been miserable. And I could barely reach you on the phone, and-"
"I'm home now. Let me take care of my family." He let his hand trail down to your belly as he kissed you hard.
Once you were buckled in as well, you were sound asleep before Bradley had the Bronco out of the airport loop. By the end of the weekend, he would have your doubts about baby number two erased, replaced with the joy he felt over growing his family.
-----------------------------
You weren't sure how he managed to get both you and Rose inside the house without you waking up, but he did it. Hours later, you rolled over in bed, eyes cracking open when you heard Bradley playing with the baby in the living room. Your whole body ached from exhaustion, but it was your tender breasts that sent you to find them so you could get some relief.
The fact that you still didn't know how you felt about the positive pregnancy test now that Bradley knew about it as well just added to your fatigue. It was almost too much to consider at the moment. Another baby. Another smaller baby crying at night. A chorus of cries, and two babies spitting up.
When you found your shirtless husband laying on the floor with Rose giggling as she balanced on his chest while Tramp licked his face, you couldn't help but smile. He was singing a ridiculous song and tickling her sides. You felt guilty for being so scared about having a second child when you let your fingers rest on your tummy and watched him. He was a natural. Sometimes you felt like you were struggling through parenting, but Bradley made it seem so easy.
"I know it's a lot of responsibility for someone so small, but you're already getting your first rank promotion," he murmured, leaning up to kiss her cheek. "Big sister Bradshaw, you need to report for duty next year."
When you found yourself laughing, Bradley met your eyes and smiled. "How was your nap, Mommy?"
"I feel a lot better," you replied, yanking your shirt over your head, drawing your husband's gaze to your chest as you unhooked your bra. "How did you get her to calm down?"
Bradley looked a bit dazed as he stared at your bare chest. "The Nugget just missed me," he murmured, breathing a little heavy. His cheeks were tinged with pink as you reached for Rose to feed her. "Holy fucking shit, Sweetheart. We're having another baby." You nodded a bit helplessly, feeling so overwhelmed as your daughter latched on to eat as soon as you were sitting on the couch. "Two Nuggets," he said, petting Tramp as he stood. "And another year or more of my wife lactating."
You were dreading the weight gain and nausea and lack of sleep, but when he looked at you like this, it was hard to feel unappealing. Bradley's eyes were absolutely fixed on the beads of milk rolling down to your belly as Rose eventually switched sides.
"Can I have a turn when she naps?" he rasped, adjusting his gym shorts, absolutely unashamed. "It's been a week. I need it."
Soon enough, you had him in bed, practically curled up on your lap with his lips all over your breasts. "We're supposed to be talking about plans for another baby," you whispered, loving the scrape of his mustache against your skin. "I have a lot of concerns."
Bradley moaned, releasing you with a soft pop. "We can talk while I enjoy you," he promised. "What are you concerned about?"
He ran his nose along your taut nipple, and you moaned his name. "Bradley. One baby is expensive. How are we going to manage two? And we'll need to get another crib. And I have to make an appointment with Dr. Morris. And I can't believe you got me pregnant again while Rose is still a baby."
His lips grazed along your sensitive skin, and you were helpless to do anything but let your fingers thread through his hair. "What's so hard to believe?" he whispered. "We worked at it for months to have Rose, so this seems fair. And it's not like I can keep my dick out of your pussy. It was bound to happen whether you missed a pill or not." His tongue was warm as he lapped at you, his big hand splayed low on your belly. "I couldn't be fucking happier."
"Bradley," you gasped, back arching at his touch.
"We'll figure it out. I promise," he crooned. "Two babies. I'm so in love, Baby Girl. And you'll be nice and round again soon. Holy hell."
You didn't want to point out that your belly was still chubby and your hips were still round. Not when he was praising everything about you and the situation the two of you were caught up in. Two babies. Two. He was whining your name and rubbing himself against you, and next thing you knew, he had you on your back, legs flung over his shoulders.
He ate your pussy, taking his sweet time about it while his thumb traced your tattoo. He drew out your orgasm slowly. His lips were latched onto your clit as his big hands kept you spread wide. "Missed you. Love you," he hummed, kissing his way along your slick. "Making me a Daddy all over again, Sweetheart."
"Roo," you whispered, keeping him where you needed him with your hands in his hair. "Daddy."
You came on his face, pussy needy and clenching at nothing before he shoved his cock inside you. The feral sound you made as your orgasm intensified, gripping him as he groaned and grunted in your ear, was loud enough to wake Rose from her nap. But you couldn't stop when he made you feel so good you nearly blacked out.
"I love you. And Rose. And our perfect baby we haven't met quite yet."
--------------------------
By the end of the weekend, you were smiling more. The naps you were afforded by having Bradley back home definitely helped, he could tell. But you seemed more at ease with the idea of two children close in age the more you and he talked about it.
"We have some options," he whispered, kissing you as you snuggled up with him on the couch on Sunday night. The episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was playing in the background, but he'd lost interest in it before it even started. "We can move Rose to the bedroom by the stairs, or we can turn that into nursery number two."
You crinkled your nose. "That's so far away from our bedroom."
"But we can't move Rose upstairs yet."
"No way," you agreed. "Maybe they can share a room?"
"Hmm. That would make it easier for Tramp to nap with both of them at the same time."
Your laughter made him feel so much better as he snuggled you closer. He could happily fall asleep like this until it was time to go to work tomorrow.
"Oh," you murmured, "I didn't even ask about your time in Texas."
Bradley immediately pictured startlingly blue eyes as you laced your fingers with his. "Was good," he replied, realizing just how much busier his life was about to become. A new role at work and a new baby. Students to teach and two kids at home.
"Tell me all about it," you murmured, stifling a yawn.
He found there wasn't much to talk about other than Indigo and Rex, and he didn't want to bore you. "Maybe I was a bit stingy, but I only invited ten pilots to come to Top Gun. Two will more than likely make it through the program. The rest... we'll see."
"Who are the two that will make it through?"
Your yawns grew in intensity as you closed your eyes, and he knew you needed to get plenty of sleep. Bradley kissed the tip of your nose, figuring you would be asleep before he finished his sentence. "Rex and Indigo, but Indigo is the best."
---------------------------
Baby number two! The Nuggets are multiplying! Roo needs to keep his head in the game if he wants a happy wife. Thanks @beyondthesefourwalls

Word Count: 3.6k+
T/W : Arguing (With roos)
Tumblr media
From your first initial brief encounters with Jake "Hangman" Seresin you gathered enough to understand why his reputation for bravado was almost as well-known as his flying prowess. Despite his cockiness, Hangman always treated you with an unexpected kindness and respect that stood out. Particularly in contrast to his usual smugness. Each interaction, though brief, hinted at a depth beneath the showy exterior which intrigued you more than you had ever anticipated. Especially since you knew how your brother, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw felt about the man
how most pilots felt about him actually.
Now, as you stepped onto the prestigious grounds of Top Gun, it's not just as any recruit. You stepped on as a newly minted WSO. The best of the best elite navigators and tactical hearts behind some of the best pilots in the navy. Here, your brother, has already made a name for himself. He was not just a skilled pilot but a protector, especially where you're concerned. The dynamic at Top Gun shifted perceptibly with your arrival. Rooster, your twin and lifelong guardian, watched over you with a hawk’s vigilance. His protectiveness dialed to its peak amidst the competitive pressures of the academy.
The air crackles with a palpable tension as you walk past the rows of gleaming aircraft with Rooster at your side. Hangman caught sight of you both. The easy grin he typically wears shifts into something more measured though his greeting remains warm and inviting. The rivalry between him and Rooster is well-known and your presence as a WSO—not just Rooster’s sister but a tactical force in your own right—adds a new layer to the already charged atmosphere.
During the initial briefings and training sessions you quickly sensed the underlying tension between Hangman and Rooster. Rooster’s protectiveness was palpable. His demeanor shifting subtly whenever Hangman interacted with you. Despite this though you were determined to carve out your own path, proving your skills in the high-stakes environment of Top Gun and navigating the complex dynamics of friendship, rivalry, and the unspoken rules of engagement.
Your journey at Top Gun was set against the backdrop of supersonic jets and tactical challenges where every decision could tip the delicate balance between personal loyalties and professional duties. With Hangman’s occasional flares of interest and Rooster’s watchful eyes your tenure at the academy was bound to be as thrilling as it was challenging.

First Strike
The debriefing room is abuzz as you and the other members of your squadron file in after a challenging flight simulation exercise. As a WSO your role in today’s mission had been crucial. You managed the weapons systems with precision and played a key part in the team's success. The large screens at the front of the room flicker to life as you set down next to Phoenix. It began showing replays of key moments from the exercise.
Maverick who was your teacher and was overseeing the debriefing, commands the room with an authoritative ease. He walks everyone through various segments of the mission, pausing on a particular maneuver — your maneuver — that had decisively shifted the tide in your squadron's favor.
As the replay highlights your actions, Hangman, usually reserved with his commendations speaks out, “I think we ought to acknowledge the sharp tactics from our WSOs today, particularly Ducky,” he begins, capturing the room’s attention and staring right at you. “Her decisions out there were nothing short of critical. Maybe she should take the lead in coordinating our next sim, see what else she's got up her sleeve.”
Your call sign, Ducky, came as naturally as any others and the irony of it being avian themed wasn’t lost on you. One afternoon after a particularly challenging flight where you demonstrated remarkable agility and finesse your fellow WSO jokingly commented that you were "ducking and weaving like a little duckling out there." The room erupted in laughter, and the name instantly clicked. Despite the initial intention of a light tease, the call sign Ducky resonated, symbolizing not only your ability to maneuver with exceptional ease but also your connection to a family known for their distinctive and memorable contributions to the aviation world.
The suggestion by Jake though seems to take the room by surprise, including Maverick, who raises an eyebrow. He was clearly intrigued by this unexpected praise from Hangman. His interest is evident with a slight smile tugging at his lips as he considers the potential of Hangman’s proposal.
Rooster, however, reacts differently. He doesn't speak. He doesn't need to. His expression tightens, a clear sign of annoyance flashing across his features as he shifts uncomfortably. The protective brother who was always wary of Hangman’s intentions towards you is on edge though he chooses to remain silent. His demeanor speaks incredible volumes though.
Maverick picks up on the tension but chooses to redirect the conversation tactfully. “Interesting point, Hangman. We’ll consider all suggestions. Great work today, everyone, especially our WSO team. Let’s keep the momentum going,” he concludes tactfully before moving the debriefing forward but with a thoughtful look that lingers on you a moment longer, pondering the new dynamics unfolding within his team. With you and Hangman particularly.
After the debriefing concludes the room gradually empties as pilots and WSOs disperse, discussing the day's outcomes and upcoming assignments. You’re gathering your notes when you sense a presence beside you. Hangman leans casually against the table with his hands tucked into his flight suit pockets. That usual mischievous glint in his eyes was showing through as he waited on you.
“Hey, Ducky. Good job today,” Hangman starts, his voice low enough for just the two of you amidst the dispersing crowd. “I wasn’t just blowing smoke in there. You really do have a knack for this.”
“Thanks, Hangman. Just trying to make sure you’re not the only hotshot around here,” you quip with a playful smirk, acknowledging his compliment but keeping the tone light and spirited.
Hangman’s grin widens and he nods towards the doorway where Rooster is lingering. He was clearly waiting for you but doing a poor job of hiding his irritation. “You know, I think your brother might actually laser-beam me with his eyes if he tries any harder,” Hangman murmurs. His voice a conspiratorial whisper that tickles the edge of your ear.
You glance over at Rooster and caught the unmistakable scowl etched across his face. “Yeah, he’s not your biggest fan right now,” you admit while feeling a mix of amusement and familial loyalty tug at you.
Hangman chuckles himself while shaking his head. “Well, if he starts throwing punches you’ll cover me, right? I mean, who’s going to lead the next sim if I’m out of commission?”
His joke eases the tension a bit and you nod, playing along. “I’ll do my best but no promises if he’s really got his heart set on it,” you quip back. Your voice light, teasing.
As you both share a laugh Rooster finally approaches, his steps measured, his expression softening just a touch as he nears. Hangman straightens up while giving you a quick, conspiratorial wink before stepping back to afford you and Rooster some space.
“Ready to go?” Rooster asks, his voice a careful neutral.
“Yeah, just about,” you respond before casting a final smile at Hangman who shoots you a mock-salute and heads off leaving a trace of warmth and a promise of more lighthearted banter for another day.
As Hangman strides away with a confident flick of his hand in farewell Rooster steps closer, his expression serious. “Just be careful with him, alright?” he mutters as his eyes tracked Hangman's departure.
You nod, suppressing the urge to roll your eyes which you let slip anyway as soon as Rooster looks away. “I know, I know. Don’t worry so much,” you reply, keeping your voice light to diffuse any further concern. Despite his protective instincts you're not about to let that dictate your interactions. Not even with someone as notoriously charming as Hangman.

Second Wind
The Hard Deck is buzzing tonight. It was filled with the lively chatter and clinking glasses of Top Gun’s finest unwinding after a week of rigorous training. You’re in the midst of a heated pool game against Payback and the stakes are humorously high. As you line up your shot, the cue ball snapping crisply against your target you sunk it smoothly into the corner pocket. The small crowd od pilots and WSO’s around the pool table lets out a mixture of cheers and groans.
Hangman is the loudest. His voice booming over the others as he claps enthusiastically. “Atta girl, Ducky! Show him how it’s done!” he shouts. The grin evident in his voice. As you straighten up he steps forward while offering you a high-five that lingers just a moment too long. His hand warm and firm against yours. Your smile broadens and a laugh escapes you, fueled by the excitement of the game and the infectious energy of Hangman’s support. Around you the others cheer on, but you catch a glimpse of Rooster at the bar. His glass is halfway to his lips but he’s not drinking. He’s watching. His expression is unreadable, but the set of his jaw and the slight narrowing of his eyes speak volumes.
As the game continues Hangman stays close, his cheers punctuating each of your successful shots. You can’t help but feel a rush of adrenaline with each shout. Not just from the game but also from the attention he’s giving you. It’s fun, it's exhilarating, and it’s something you’ve found yourself looking forward to more often than not.
“You’re killing it, Ducky! Payback’s gonna need a consolation prize after this!” Hangman jests from beside the table. His tone teasing but not without a touch of pride.
Glancing over at Rooster again you notice the slight clench of his fist around his glass, his gaze lingering a moment too long on you and Hangman. It’s clear he’s less than thrilled about the growing camaraderie between you two. He was seeing Hangman’s overt praises as more than just friendly support. Despite the fun atmosphere you can’t shake the awareness of Rooster’s protective instincts flaring up, perhaps seeing Hangman’s enthusiasm as a challenge to his role as your guardian.
The banter between you and Hangman grows more spirited as the evening progresses. Each witty exchange draws laughter from the onlookers and adds a spark to the already electric atmosphere of the Hard Deck. “Careful Payback, she’s got more tricks up her sleeve than I've got maneuvers!” Hangman teases loudly, his eyes twinkling with mischief as you line up another winning shot.
“Yeah, and all of them are better than yours,” you retort without missing a beat. The cue stick hitting the ball with a satisfying click as it sends it hurtling into the pocket.
The growing crowd gets into another round of cheers and Hangman’s laughter joins yours, filling the room with an infectious joy. You can’t help but revel in the blissfulness of it all. The ease of the exchange making the night all the more enjoyable.
From the corner of your eye though you see Rooster pushing away from the bar. His demeanor shifting from protective observer to active participant. Without a word he strides over to the piano in the corner of the room. The conversations around you dim as Rooster’s fingers begin to dance across the keys. That familiar tune that you both loved as kids filling the room.
You can’t help but laugh while shaking your head at Rooster’s not-so-subtle way of stealing the spotlight. “Show-off,” you mutter under your breath though the affection in your voice is clear.
Hangman leans closer, his voice low and amused. “Looks like someone’s trying to remind us he’s still the king of cool around here.”
You lean in too, matching his conspiratorial tone with a playful sparkle in your eye. “You know, I think he’s just trying to draw my attention away from a certain someone,” you say winking subtly at Hangman. “But honestly? I’d rather stay here and chat, just to annoy him a bit more.”
Hangman’s grin widens at that. His eyes lighting up with delight. “Oh, is that so?” he chuckles, clearly enjoying the game. “Well in that case, I’m more than happy to provide all the distraction you need.”
The playful exchange hangs between you, adding a layer of light-hearted flirtation to the evening. Rooster’s piano playing becomes a soft background melody to your continued conversation. Each note a subtle reminder of the familial ties that weave through your interactions. Yet, amidst the laughter and music, there’s a thrill in the air. A shared amusement that only adds to the night’s charm, leaving Hangman more enamored than ever.

Third Time’s the Charm (Or Not)
The briefing room is charged with the usual post-flight tension as pilots and WSOs gather for the day’s assessments and comments from Maverick. You and Hangman had recently completed a tandem training flight that not only went exceptionally well but also demonstrated a seamless dynamic between the two of you. The energy from the flight still buzzes between you as you enter the room together, chatting lightly.
Maverick starts the briefing by outlining the objectives and reviewing key tactical points. As the session nears its end, Hangman, unable to contain his enthusiasm, stands abruptly, interrupting the flow. “I just wanted to say,” Hangman begins, his voice filled with a mix of pride and a hint of something deeper, “flying with Ducky here has been the highlight of my training. Honestly, she’s the best wingman I could ask for.” His eyes find yours across the room with a smile playing at his lips. The statement hanging heavily in the air, laden with unspoken implications.
The room falls into a stunned silence with every eye turning to gauge the reactions around them. Rooster’s chair scrapes back loudly as he stands, his face flushed with anger and frustration.
“This is just you trying to get under my skin, Hangman! Every damn time!” Rooster snaps. His voice cutting through the tension like a knife. The accusation hangs heavy, charging the air with an unmistakable intensity.
You feel a surge of frustration, your own temper flaring as you stand to face your brother. “Really, Roos? Is it always about you? Maybe he likes me as his wingman. Have you ever thought of that?” Your voice, sharp and loud, silences the room completely. The weight of your words settling over everyone like a thick blanket.
Maverick was caught off-guard between the sibling spat and simply looks between you and Rooster. His expression unreadable but clearly uneasy with the escalating drama. Hangman, meanwhile, watches the exchange with a look of remorse, realizing perhaps too late the depth of the rift his words have deepened. As the tension reaches a palpable peak you shake your head more in disappointment than anger, and storm out of the briefing room. Hangman hesitates only a moment before following you, his steps quick as he catches up.
Outside, the cool air hits you like a splash of water helping to temper your heated emotions.
Hangman watches you with a concerned expression as you step outside. “Hey, I know that got intense back there. I’m sorry you had to jump in,” he says softly, his tone sincere.
You sigh, feeling the sting of your outburst. “I just... I didn’t mean to blow up like that. It’s just frustrating when it feels like he doesn’t see me as anything more than his little sister to protect.”
Hangman nods while stepping closer, his presence comforting. “I get it. And for what it’s worth, I meant every word I said in there. You really are the best wingman, Ducky.” His voice carries a warmth that makes you look up, meeting his reassuring gaze.
The corners of your mouth lift in a small, grateful smile. “Thanks, Hangman. That means a lot, especially coming from you.” You knew full well he wasn’t one to hand out compliments.
His expression softens and he offers a small, encouraging chuckle. “And, hey, if it’s any consolation, you standing up to your brother in there? That was pretty badass. Not many people can make Rooster pause like that. Trust me, I’ve tried” He smirks trying to ease your frustration.
You laugh at that sounding more relaxed now. “Well, I guess it’s good to know I have a hidden superpower: stopping Bradley in his tracks.”
“Definitely a valuable skill around here,” Hangman agrees, his grin infectious. “Look, I know things can get complicated, but I’m here, alright? Wingman on the ground and in the air.”
The simple assurance brings a sense of relief, and you nod feeling the earlier tension dissipate. “I appreciate that, Jake. Really.”
As you both head back inside the conversation flows more easily, veering into lighter territories—upcoming missions, favorite downtime activities, and the occasional gentle tease. With each step you find yourself genuinely smiling. The weight of the day lifting with the shared understanding that whatever comes next you won’t face it alone.

Clearing the Air
After the tension of the previous day, you know something has to give. Seizing a quiet moment in the early evening you find Rooster and Hangman at the base and steer them toward a secluded spot near the hangar. The impromptu gathering under the fading sky isn’t formal but the air is thick with unsaid things.
“Okay, guys,” you start, cutting straight to the chase. “We need to sort this out. Whatever this is.” You sigh, “Rooster, I appreciate you looking out for me, I really do. But I’m not just your little sister here
I’m a WSO in the Navy, and I need you to trust my judgment. Not just in the air but here on the ground, too.”
He tries to bite his tongue, but he can’t seem to stop himself. “Listen, Y/N, I’m just looking out for you. That’s my job as your brother,” Bradley insisted. His voice stern and unyielding.
Jake shifted uncomfortably, sensing the rising heat in Rooster's tone but remaining silent. His eyes flicking between the two of you.
“It’s not just about being my brother, Bradley!” you shot back, your frustration with him now boiling over. “I’m not a child, and this
this overprotective routine? It’s suffocating. I’m an adult! A WSO and a damn good one at that. I make life or death decisions every day. I can handle Jake. I can handle myself.”
Bradley’s expression tightened. His jaw clenching as he prepared to argue, but you didn’t let him. “I need you to trust my judgment, Roos. Trust that I know what I’m doing. Trust that I can take care of myself.” Your eyes are pleading now.
The raw honesty in your voice seemed to cut through the tension, leaving a heavy silence. Jake watched, his usual bravado nowhere in sight instead replaced by a look of respect towards your fervent declaration.
Bradley looked from you to Hangman, then back again. The fight draining from his stance. He sighed deeply, the lines of his face softening. “I
I’m sorry. I know you’re capable. It’s just hard for me to not see you as my little sister. But you’re right. You deserve to make your own choices. I’ll try to back off.”
You breathed out a mix of relief and residual adrenaline making your hands tremble slightly. “Thank you, Roos. That’s all I ask.”
Turning to Hangman, your tone softens. “And Jake, you’ve been great, really supportive. But sometimes the way you push Bradley’s buttons doesn’t help things. We’re all on the same team, right?”
Jake chuckles while scratching his head sheepishly. He was immensely grateful you were able to handle that before things got too sticky. “Yeah, you’re right darlin’. I might enjoy teasing him a bit too much. I’ll keep it in check.” He nods his head to Bradley. A truce of sorts.
Relief washes over you as the tension begins to dissolve. “Thank you, both. Let’s remember we’re here to make each other better, not make things harder.”
As the conversation winds down, the mood lightens, and Bradley claps you both on the shoulders. “Alright, let’s get back to it then. And maybe I’ll try to keep the drama for the simulators,” he says with a reluctant grin.
As your brother walks away Jake lingers, his smile genuine. “So, now that peace is restored, how about we grab dinner? Just you and me. I owe you one for being the peacekeeper around here.”
Your laughter echoes lightly in the cool evening air. “Sounds like a plan. Just promise it’ll be a drama-free meal.”
“Scout’s honor,” He grins as he fell into step beside you. As you walk towards the mess hall together the easiness between the two of you feels restored. And maybe, just maybe, you feel things a little bit deeper than before.
“Y/N, I wasn’t just trying to get on your good side earlier, you know?” Jake adds as you reach the door. “You really are the best at what you do.”
You nudge him playfully, feeling the last of the day’s stress melt away. “Keep that up and I might let you win at the next sim.”
Hangman laughs loudly. It was a sound you were coming to enjoy. “Deal. But only if you save me a seat next to you at dinner.” As you step into the warmth of the mess hall you can’t help but feel optimistic. With everything laid out and understood the path forward seems a lot clearer. And having Hangman at your side doesn’t just feel good. It feels utterly right.

bradley bradshaw x fem!reader — you’re worried about what bradley will think of your new haircut.
mutual pining, pre-relationship, fluff (very self indulgent since I got my hair cut this week xoxo)
You were feeling good about your new haircut yesterday, when it was freshly cut and styled and so super soft. Today is different. You know you look different and you can help but think different is bad.
You rake a hand through your short hair. “Does my hair look bad?”
Natasha and Bob both give you twin looks of incredulity. It’s not the first time you’ve asked it tonight. They’ve brought you along to the Hard Deck for a night of drinks with their friends and you can’t stop fussing over your hair. You won’t admit to them it’s because you’re harbouring a massive crush on one of their squad members and you’re worried he’ll think you look awful.
“It looks fine,” Natasha tells you, again, not for the first time. “You look pretty. Right, Bob?”
Bob hums, tapping his fingers on the wooden tabletop. “You look great, Y/N.” He gives you a look from behind his glasses. Confusion, a bit of suspicion. “Why are you worrying so much, anyway?”
Your heart stutters. “I’m not—“
“Phoenix, Bob!” Jake Seresin appears seemingly out of nowhere, sidling up to your table with all the charm of a prince. His eyes land on you and your new hair and he grins. “And Y/N. Looking good, sugar.”
He winks at you. He’s a huge flirt and you’d definitely be into him if it weren’t for another certain aviator.
You smile at him. “Thanks, Jake.”
The others, Payback and Fanboy, file in behind him. They both notice and compliment your hair, which is a good sign. Still, you know who’s coming next and you can’t help but curl in on yourself, taking a sip of your drink so you don’t have to see him as he approaches.
“Hey, guys!” Bradley Bradshaw appears, stupid Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses, moustache, golden skin and all. He’s tucking his glasses into his shirt so he doesn’t see you at first. “Hey— woah, Y/N.”
He stops short when he sees you. You lower your drink slowly, heart in your throat. Your knee bounces underneath the table.
“Hi, Bradley,” you say.
Bradley blinks. Blinks again. “Hi. Hey. I— you cut your hair.”
He says it like he’s never heard of a haircut before. You smile unsurely.
“I did,” you say, pushing a lock behind your ear as if that will help your case. “Is it bad?”
“Bad? No, it’s— it really suits you,” he says. If you’re not mistaken, he’s stuttering. Not only that, but unless you’re imagining it, he’s blushing. He stares at you, completely unaware of anything or anyone else, golden cheeks tinged pink. “You look really pretty.”
Your turn to blush. Heat flares behind your cheeks, burning into your smile. Pretty, he called you. “Thanks, Brad.”
Bradley seems to come back into himself, a lopsided grin creeping onto his face. He shoves his hands into his jeans pockets and smiles at you. “Hey, you’re welcome. Just tell me next time so I don’t have a heart attack, okay?”
What’s that supposed to mean? You open your mouth to say something, you don’t know what, but Jake’s southern drawl interrupts you.
“Bradshaw!” Both you and Bradley turn to see Jake at the pool table with the rest of the boys. “Stop flirting with Y/N and get over here so I can beat you. Again.”
Bradley rolls his eyes. “He’s lying, I won last week. I’ll be back, okay? Don’t go anywhere.”
You weren’t planning to. He flashes you a dazzling smile and then you watch him go, your heart thrumming with the sort of electricity you can’t ignore. You think you might burst. He’d called you pretty, said you’d given him a heart attack. You feel like your own heart’s about to give out, too.
Across the table, Bradley now well out of earshot, Natasha wiggles her eyebrows at you.
“Oh,” she says slyly. “Now I get why you were so worried about your hair.”
You groan and bury your burning face in your drink again. “Please shut up, Nat.”
You have a feeling she won’t.

For the Love of Love | Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x Reader | Part II
Part I | Series Masterlist
Summary: You immediately have doubts. As the morning goes on, they only get stronger. Good thing Bradley can be normal about this. Right?
Word Count: 3.9k
Warnings: fake dating, fake dating Bradley Bradshaw in particular, completely implied age gap
a/n: Thank all y'all for the response to the first part :) I was so nervous to post it, but everyone has been so kind and encouraging! Also, I've created a taglist for this series -- please let me know if you'd like to be tagged in future updates! Ok, ok, let's get this show on the road (literally, we're on the way to Tahoe lol), enjoy x
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was 6:15 am. Streetlights washed your walls a bright, sterile white. You paced in front of your door. Next to it, your pink luggage set waited for you dutifully. Bradley was supposed to pick you up 15 minutes ago. He hadn’t responded to any of your texts. Or your calls.
Were you dumb for thinking he really wanted to join you – and your entire family – in Tahoe? Was he drunker than he let on last night, or maybe he forgot entirely? You hoped not, you’d already bought him the seat next to you on the plane. You really didn’t want to explain to your parents why they were paying for two plane seats when only you arrived at the cabin.
You checked your phone. 6:17. Soon, you’d have to drive by yourself. Maybe he’d catch you at the airport.
Just as you made for your keys, there was a sharp knock at your door. You undid the deadbolt and flung it open. Bradley stood in the sickly yellow light of the hallway, looking better than you wanted him to in just gray sweats and a black hoodie.
“Good morning!” He was surprisingly chirpy for how early it was.
“You’re late. Why didn’t you answer my texts?”
“What texts?”
“The texts I sent you?” You grabbed all three pieces of your luggage and struggled through the door frame.
“My phone died.” He was tapping his phone screen like he was just realizing that it wasn’t turning on. He gave up, pocketed the phone, and lifted the two biggest suitcases out of your hands. “Jesus, how long are we going to be gone? It’s like you packed your whole closet.”
“Three days. But I have to be prepared.” You locked up your apartment and started down the stairs, your suitcase clanking down each step. Your neighbors were probably thrilled.
Bradley followed behind you, lifting your other suitcases as if they weighed nothing.
“So you’re just going to travel with a dead phone?” You asked when you finally made it to the lobby.
He shrugged. “Is your phone charged?”
“Of course.”
“Works good enough for me.”
He reached over your head to hold open the front door as you dragged your suitcase into the brisk early morning. His Bronco shone like adventure. You and Bradley loaded your luggage, and he opened the door for you to get into the passenger seat.
“Coffees?” You asked as he slid into the driver’s seat and started the car.
He glanced down at the twin iced coffees lined up in the cupholders between you. “I thought it'd help us get through the early morning. I didn’t know what you liked though, so I just got you my drink.”
You stabbed a straw through the plastic lid of the coffee and took a sip. It was shockingly sweet. You coughed a little.
“You like it?” Bradley smiled, keeping his eyes on the road. “I’ve perfected my order. Caramel and white mocha and cinnamon sprinkle on top.”
You take another sip. Without the sweetness taking you by surprise, it was much better. “It’s good. I would have pegged you for a hot black coffee guy, though.”
“I’m full of surprises.” He merged on the freeway.
The sound of the road passing under the Bronco filled the silence of the car.
“So
” Bradley tapped his thumb against the Bronco’s wheel, the echoes of some song you didn’t know. “What’s your family like?”
You watched lights flick on in the windows of the buildings you passed. People getting ready for their typical days. You pressed down a shock of panic. This was absurd. But Bradley seemed committed, and if it was going to work, you had to set him up for success. That meant warning him about your family.
“Well, my Grandma Sybil and Grandpa Thomas have been married for sixty years. Obviously.” Nervous laughter bubbled from your lips before you could stop it. “They’re Grandma and Grandpa. I grew up going to their house and stuffing myself on her cookies and falling asleep on his lap. But Grandma Sybil can be
 stern.”
He stopped tapping his thumb to snag his coffee and take a sip. “Like, how so?”
“She’s just a little rough around the edges. She had a tough life before meeting my grandfather, and though she softened to him, I don’t think she softened much to the rest of the world. Just, don’t take it personally if she doesn’t warm up to you right away. Or at all.”
“Noted.” You heard him swallow.
You picked at a seam in your pants. “And their oldest daughter is my Aunt Marnie. She’s married to Uncle Jim. They run a crystal shop just outside of Vegas. They might try to push moonstone or onyx on you. Just smile and accept it.”
“Ok. Marnie and Jim. Crystals.” He committed the names to memory.
“Their daughter Sabrine just got married.”
“You went to the wedding, I remember.”
You flushed, grateful that the sun hadn’t quite risen yet and the hotness of your cheeks dissipated in the darkened car. He had remembered. You didn’t think any detail of your life was important enough for him to care to remember – and it really was just one week that you were gone – but maybe your life had bled into the Daggers’ more than you thought.
As the airport came into view, you told him about Sabrine and how she would bring her new husband Matt. She was already seven months pregnant. Grandma Sybil was less than pleased, but Grandpa Thomas either didn’t care or hadn't worked out the math.
“And what do your aunt and uncle think?” Bradley asked.
“I think they’re just happy that she’s happy. They sound excited to be grandparents. But Auntie Marnie did complain that the wedding was tacky.”
Bradley snorted. “Was it?”
“It was sweet,” you said. “It was in his mom’s backyard. The colors were red and black, but it was sweet.”
An airplane roared overhead, glinting in the sun that was just sharpening over the horizon.
Bradley pulled into the airport’s parking garage. He had only packed himself a duffle bag, so he was able to carry all of your luggage plus his own. In exchange, you carried both coffees and locked the Bronco. You slipped Bradley’s keys into his pocket as he instructed, your fingers warming where they grazed the fabric of his sweats.
The airport was fizzing with the whispers of early morning travelers. You rubbed your eyes as you stepped under the fluorescent lights, taking stock of just how many others were yawning and lining up at the baggage counter under those same lights. Why was the airport so busy before 7am?
As if he could read your mind (or maybe he just saw you tense up at the sight of so many people), Bradley said, “It’s ok. We still have time.”
His reassurance drove you to action. You traded his coffee for your bags and shuffled into line for the check in counter. From the standstill line, you watched Bradley as he wandered around the walkway, taking sips of his coffee, staring up at the ceiling, and generally being a 6’1” hazard to the travelers rushing to get to the TSA line. You rolled your suitcases across the green gray carpets the check in counter line eked forward, nearly running into the old man in front of you as you kept your gaze on Bradley. Why was even his boredom endearing?
Just before you got to the front of the line, he stopped and stared up at the ceiling, causing a woman who was looking at her phone to crash into him. You giggled as you watched him apologize, and saw, in real time, as the woman went from indignant to flustered as she realized how hot he was. She tried to strike up a conversation, but he caught your gaze from across the room. Her eyes followed his, and when it hit you, she was quick to disappear into the airport crowd.
Your face grew hot. You mouthed sorry to him as the woman at the counter was calling you forward. You were a little sorry; she was very pretty. But some part of you delighted in being perceived as his girlfriend, even if it was easier to convince a stranger than your family.
“Ma’am, next guest.” The stern voice of the woman at the counter shook you from your thoughts.
Once your bags were checked, you caught up with Bradley. The two of you rounded the corner only to stop short when you saw the enormous security line.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” you groaned.
“We’ll be fine. It’s only 7:15.” Bradley nudged your shoulder with his. “Plus, it gives us time to get our story straight.”
“Our story?” You asked as you both stepped into line.
“Yeah. Like, how did we meet?”
You didn’t skip a beat. “Nat introduced us.”
“That was quick.” He raised his eyebrows.
“Well, let’s try to stick with reality as much as possible. And my family loves Nat, her stamp of approval will go down great.” You really hoped no one could hear you two. But the steady murmur of overlapping early-morning conversation seemed to drown out your weird topic of conversation.
“Well, how long have we been dating?”
That you had to think about. “Well, it can’t be too short, otherwise it would be weird that I’m bringing you.”
“It’s already weird.” He laughed.
“They don’t need to know that,” you said. “How long do you think we could pass for? 2 months? 6?”
“Aren’t they going to ask why you’ve never talked about me or brought me around?”
“Good point. We’ll say 4, and I’ll just tell them I wanted to be sure before I told them about you.”
“You think we could convince them we’ve been dating for four months?”
You shrugged, but your stomach somersaulted. “We can try.”
“Like this?” He grabbed your hand and laced his fingers between yours.
Your hand tensed. Your stomach did a whole gymnastics routine. You were holding hands with Bradley Bradshaw in the airport. You looked around, sure that any TSA agent in your vicinity could sense your anxiety and pull you for secondary screening.
“Relax.” He patted your hand with his free one. “We’re not going to get far like this.”
You forced your fingers to meld with his. The iced coffee and your nerves were a terrible mix for your empty stomach.
“Better.” He kept hold of your hand as you shuffled up the line. Then he grinned.
“What? What’s wrong?”
“You know those couples in lines at amusement parks?” A lopsided smile brightened his face. “When they’re waiting in line?”
“The ones that are really into PDA?”
“Exactly.” He dropped your hand, slid up behind you, and wrapped his arms across your waist and rested his chin on your shoulder. “All we need to do is follow their lead.”
You did everything in your power to stay upright and keep your breathing steady with his chin pressing into your skin. He kept hold of you as the line moved up. You clenched your hands, your nails digging crescents into your palms. There was no way he couldn’t hear your racing heart and your ragged breathing.
“And there’s this move.”
As the line slouched to a stop, he spun you around, still keeping hold of your waist, but now you were face to face. You looked up at him, tried to form a sentence, but found yourself completely dumb. He leaned his forehead against yours. Surely he could feel the warmth of your face, see the confused longing in your eyes. He smiled at you for just a second before he broke away from you and threw his head back laughing, drawing glares from your fellow sleep-deprived travelers.
You were practically mute through the rest of security. Bradley seemed to have fun grabbing your hand, draping an arm around your shoulders, and messing with your hair. You wondered if he knew the effect he was having on you or if he was earnestly trying to practice for your family. Maybe he was just trying to rile you up.
“You were great.” He patted the top of your head, causing your heart to shrivel a bit. “We’ll have them all wrapped around our fingers.”
You cleared your throat and tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear.
Once you were through security, you broke up to scrounge some breakfast. Well, that’s what you let Bradley think anyway. You tried to beat down the butterflies in your stomach as you wove between slow-walking travelers toting huge suitcases and knots of families with waddling toddlers, straight to the bathroom.
The stall offered you just enough privacy to freak out. You felt your face, your waist, flexed your hands right in front of your eyes. It took you months to not freak out about the platonic arm draped around your shoulders, his quick hugs goodbye at the Hard Deck. How on Earth were you going to be normal about this?
He complimented you on a job well done, but in truth, he did all the work. You didn’t reach out for him once in the security line. Would your family even believe you liked him? After that performance, the idea that they could possibly think that you were in love seemed laughable.
The weekend stretched long ahead of you. You were beginning to realize how stupid it was for you to begin such a ruse that you’d have to keep up for three days. You wondered if Bradley would react poorly to being sent home after already getting through security.
You hurriedly texted Nat – who knew very well how you felt about her coworker, almost to the point where she might have purposefully orchestrated your trip. It was a bit of a text wall, detailing the TSA line and your dread about the weekend. If she wasn’t already working, she would probably be asleep for three more hours, so you pocketed your phone after hitting send.
The sound of a flushing toilet reminded you that, yes, you were having a small crisis in a public bathroom. That thought was so sad that you took a deep breath, set your shoulders, and walked out of the stall to face the world.
From a little store, you picked up a berry parfait for breakfast and a bottled orange juice, since the TSA confiscated your half-empty iced coffee.
You found Gate 4. People were falling asleep upright in the airport seats, blankets and pillows abound. It smelled like the Jack in the Box across the way. You found two empty seats by the window and kicked up your feet to reserve one for Bradley.
He found you ten minutes later, carrying a bag stuffed with two bagels – one sausage and egg breakfast sandwich and one cinnamon raisin with strawberry cream cheese, he explained. You nodded as you dropped your feet and scraped the rest of your yogurt out of your cup.
“So your cousin Sabrine is pregnant and your grandma isn’t happy,” he said around a big bite of bagel, egg, and sausage. “What else?”
“Well, my grandparents’ youngest child is Auntie Elaine. She lives in Alaska with her husband. They breed sled dogs.”
Bradley paused right before another bite. “Really?”
“Yeah, it’s pretty cool. Some of their dogs run the Iditarod, and I think one was part of the winning team a few years back. They have twins a little older than me. Nora and her wife Madison, they’re
really cool. Last I heard, they were climbing K2. And there’s Nora’s twin brother Owen. He has a girlfriend named Addison, which I think is funny. Madison and Addison. The twins don’t think it’s as funny as I do.”
Bradley laughed. The bagel sandwich was gone, and he traded the leftover wad of greasy wrapping paper for the cinnamon raisin bagel. “And what’s the deal with Owen and Addison?”
“They’re pretty chill.” You thought about it for a minute. “Owen used to punch drywall, but he’s calmed down.”
Bradley stared at you, waiting for you to laugh.
The gate agent called you to board before you could explain. Though you didn’t think any explanation would be helpful.
The plane ride was nice and short. You slept through most of the hour and a half. You were mortified to wake up on Bradley’s shoulder as the plane jolted in the harsh turbulence that shrouded the Reno airport.
You sat bolt upright, fully awake. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be.” He patted your thigh assuredly. “It’s good practice.”
You didn’t have time to freak out at his touch because the plane rocked again. You’d experienced this turbulence countless times, something about the mountains and the desert air made the plane bounce around like a toy in the hands of an overexcited toddler. Still, as the plane jerked down, it planted a pit in your stomach that made your hands clammy.
When the plane dipped again, you clutched the armrest. You didn’t want to look at Bradley, who probably thought your overreaction was silly. He’d experienced g-forces upwards of 8Gs countless times. It was bad enough flying next to Nat, who you knew would never judge you, but next to Bradley, you felt like a little kid scared of the dark.
“Hey,” he gingerly pried your hand off the armrest and held it with a softness you didn’t expect from him, “look at me.”
You tore your eyes away from the flight tracker on the display in front of you, worried you’d see judgment in his dark eyes. But his expression was everything soft.
He smiled when you met his gaze. “We’re going to be fine. Trust me, I’ve flown a plane or two.”
You laughed despite the plane suddenly banking upward.
He squeezed your hand as the plane leveled. “So here’s the deal: you keep looking at me. You can only panic if I start panicking. Deal?”
You nodded. “Deal.”
He held your hand and your eyes until the plane kissed the blessed tarmac. By then, the pit in your stomach had been flooded with a mushy feeling you simply did not have time to drain because the seatbelt sign dinged off, and you had a rental car to secure.
Getting out of the airport went as smoothly as possible. Within 20 minutes of deboarding, you and all your luggage was crammed into a rental Prius. Bradley’s nose crinkled when he first saw it, but he folded himself into the passenger seat without complaint.
You fiddled with the radio until you got it to play a throwback ‘70s station, then peeled out of the airport. Soon, the dusty city of Reno and its casinos were in the rearview, and the Sierra Nevadas loomed large on the horizon. When the road lifted off the desert floor and began winding through the foothills, childhood excitement drummed through your veins. As the car screamed along the highway, desert scrub blurred into pine trees that jutted straight up toward the endless blue sky. Patches of snow bloomed in their shade.
“Wow,” Bradley said as the trees grew thicker like a tightly stitched blanket over the mountains. Snow carpeted the ground. Little cabins shone through the forest and snow like jewels.
“Wait until we get around this mountain.” You couldn’t keep the smile off your face. You carefully made a sharp turn, the mountainside steep and unwelcoming. But as the car straightened out, the trees yawned apart, and you caught Bradley gawking at the lake out of the corner of your eye.
Nestled between snow-draped mountains, it shone like a sapphire in the late morning sun.
You’d spent several summers splashing in its frigid waters with your cousins until your skin was so covered in goosebumps that Grandma Sybil threatened to pluck you for Christmas dinner. The same lake was the backdrop to hundreds upon hundreds of ski runs and one trip down the mountain with ski patrol. Your arm still ached to think about that late February day, even all these years later.
“It’s beautiful,” Bradley said, and you agreed wholeheartedly.
Your phone’s navigation system stated that there was only 20 minutes until you reached your grandparent’s cabin. You sucked in a breath between your teeth and cracked a window, hoping the cold, piny air would help settle your stomach. It didn’t. But you still had to finish giving Bradley the family rundown.
“My parents are Sean and Catherine,” you said. “My dad might try to intimidate you, but don’t worry, he’s a softie.”
“Ok.”
You couldn’t be sure he was paying attention, as his face was all but pressed against the window, soaking in the spectacular views. Even if you wanted to be mad, you really couldn’t blame him.
You stepped on the breaks as the road started dipping down a little. “My mom will be the most problematic. I swear sometimes she can read my mind. Whatever we do, it’ll be hard to convince her.”
“We’re going to be there in 18 minutes. Next time, a little more heads up please?”
“Sorry, sorry.” Your grip on the steering wheel tightened. “Just tell her that you take me to Vino in La Jolla and buy me flowers.”
“Is that what your ideal man would do?”
Would it be so bad if you just drove off the road? The steep mountainside looked more inviting by the second.
“Shut up.” You froze your gaze to the winding road. “I have a brother, his name is Tommy.”
“I know,” he said. “I think I’ve met him once – when he was in San Diego for spring break?”
“Oh, yeah, I forgot,” you said. “Well, he and his girlfriend Georgia are high school sweethearts. They’re the perfect couple, and it makes me sick.”
Bradley chuckled. “Noted.”
“So first goal: be believable.”
He laid his hand on your thigh. “Done.”
“Good.” His hand was burning hot. The car swerved ever so slightly as you lost focus on the road for a moment. “Second goal: be a better couple than Tommy and Georgia.”
“Let’s not try to overshoot this. We’ve only been dating for 4 months.”
You laughed in spite of yourself. When you eventually found your real partner, and everyone gathered in Tahoe again for Tommy and Georgia’s wedding, or a wintery ski trip, or whatever comes next for your family, you’ll come clean. You’ll cling to your partner and tell everyone all about your good friend Bradley Bradshaw and how the two of you never really dated. Your grandparents’ anniversary will be a hazy memory, but everyone will remember the tall, good-looking naval aviator and his (totally out of season) Hawaiian shirts and giant mustache. There would be shock, but eventually it would be an inside joke for years to come. You just had to get through this weekend.
Too soon, you were pulling into the cabin’s long, steep driveway. The cabin itself jutted off of the mountainside, its tapered roof giving it a harsh look, though you swore when you were little it just made it look cozy and inviting. Its windows were like glassy eyes following the Prius.
You put the car in park and turned to Bradley.
“Ready?” You asked.
“Ready, babe.”
Before you could fully register the fact that he called you babe, the cabin’s front door slammed open, and your family bursted out to greet you and the mysterious man you’d arrived with.
The knot in your stomach tightened like a noose.

“You have got to be kidding me.”
You couldn’t help yourself, already regretting the words once they’d left your mouth. The poor receptionist played no part in this - it wasn’t his fault. You weren’t usually this rude to hotel staff.
“I’m sorry ma’am, but we’re all booked out for tonight. It’s a twin room or no room at all.”
“C’mon, we can make it work.”
You looked up at Bradley like he was out of his mind. And he even had the audacity to grin at you. “It’s just one night.”
“You can’t be serious.”
You couldn’t believe that he was actually supporting this dumb fucking idea. “We can’t share a room. We can’t share a bed, Bradshaw.”
He raised his eyebrows and you bit your lip, mentally roundhouse-kicking yourself in the face. Why did you have to be so obviously avoidant? Your fight-or-flight was kicking in at the mere proposal. It was too obvious. Were normal people as desperately opposed to the idea of sharing a bed with a friend? Probably not. So why the fuck were you?
Because maybe Bradley was not just a friend.
Because maybe you were totally in love with him. And because maybe you’d rather die than ever admit that and get rejected.
“I mean-” You scrambled for words, for a quick excuse that would make sense, that would save you from at least some of the embarrassment. “You know, like, we’re friends. Friends don’t share a bed.”
Welp, that did not work. Horrible miss. Dart stuck in the wall-kind of miss.
“I’ll build a pillow wall if that makes you feel better”, Bradley promised, failing to hide his amusement. You clenched your jaw.
You shouldn’t. You really shouldn’t.
“There’s other hotels”, you tried, desperate to find a different solution.
“Yeah”, he nodded, almost too enthusiastically. “Sure. Because those aren’t booked out.”
Alright. So maybe he had a point.
The only options here were sleeping on the floor of a subway station in San Diego or sharing a bed with him. And the fact that you actually took two seconds debating whether getting chlamydia would be worth not having to sleep pressed up against Bradley’s (warm and very comfortable) chest in a clean bed told you enough about just how far you’d fallen for him already. You were in too deep. And after tonight, you’d be a goner.
But you really, really did not want to spend the night on the subway.
“Fuck this”, you muttered, turning back to the poor receptionist who looked like he’d rather be on the subway getting chlamydia himself than here and forcefully smiled at him. “We’ll take the room, thank you.”
...
The door swung open and you blindly reached for the light switch, flipping it on before trudging into the room with your suitcase in one hand and the keys in the other.
You parked the suitcase in some random corner, threw your jacket onto the tiny table and looked up only to see that Bradley had already claimed the left side of the bed, arms and legs spread out, eyes closed. There was a lump in your throat as you watched him breathe that should not have been there. Neither should the flutter in your tummy. Neither should the heat in your cheeks when he opened his eyes and caught you staring.
“This is like some fucked up scene straight out of a shitty rom-com”, you complained - the only thing you knew how to do so you wouldn’t drool. He looked way too attractive doing literally nothing. You were not okay with that. Especially now that you had to share the bed with him.
He tucked his hands behind his head (his biceps flexed ridiculously) and chuckled.
“You love rom-coms”, he reminded you.
“Yeah, but only good ones with actual plot and characters that have personality.”
(This was, in itself, an absolute and total lie and Bradley definitely knew that. He was right - you loved rom-coms. You loved all of them. Especially the shitty ones with no plot whatsoever except “Oh we’re two idiots in love”. But you’d thought it would be much more fun if life played out like that - you hadn’t thought it would be like this.)
“You’re a bad liar”, he laughed, propping himself up on his elbows to get a better look at you.
“Am not”, you protested. He hummed.
“You definitely are.”
Then he patted the other side of the bed again. “Stop pouting and get in.”
You rolled your eyes and turned away from him, bending down to put your suitcase on the ground and undo the zipper.
“Gotta change first, Bradshaw. You can build that pillow wall while I’m in the bathroom.”
His chuckle followed you even as you closed the door behind you half a minute later and it took you longer than it should have to change into pajamas - shout out to your shaking hands - partly because you spent five minutes brushing your teeth, looking at yourself in the mirror and trying to calm your nerves by telling your reflection all kinds of reassurances. (”It’s just one night” and “If you stay on your side you won’t even know he’s there” and “You’ll both be asleep anyway”)
You almost had a heart attack when you left the bathroom again.
Because yes, Bradley was still in bed, and that in itself was stressful enough. But mainly because he’d kicked the covers to his feet and his pajamas, if one could call it that, consisted only of his briefs.
At least he had the decency to look apologetic.
“Sorry”, he said, gesturing at himself. “I don’t have sleepwear with me. I usually sleep naked.”
Because of course he did. Of course Bradley fucking Bradshaw slept naked.
“Uh”, you managed, mind completely blank. You were very, very much aware of the fact that you should say something. You just did not have the mental capacity to come up with anything whatsoever.
There was a goddamn Adonis in your bed.
If you’d thought you weren’t wearing much before (because you really weren’t, you’d expected San Diego to be warm and had only packed a skimpy little nightgown) then Bradley was wearing literally nothing.
And, well, he kind of was wearing nothing.
Couldn’t he at least have kept the covers up? But no. You knew him. He was basically a live heating pad. He’d die if he pulled them up.
“Okay”, you eventually managed to croax out, forcing your feet to work, to carry you to the right side - your side - of the bed, to flick on the lamp on your bedside table and turn off the big one, all without thinking. “Yeah, no worries.”
“Good.” He nodded his head for what had to be the better part of ten full seconds. “Good.”
The silence felt awkward. You were just sitting on the edge of the bed and he was propped up on his elbows on his side, staring holes into the air, not saying anything. Eventually he cleared his throat.
“Wanna, like, sleep?”
“Oh, yeah.” You busied yourself with the covers so you wouldn’t have to look at him, carefully sliding underneath them. “Yeah, we probably should.”
Only the rustling of the sheets filled the room until you were finally lying flat on the mattress, head resting on the pillow, and then there was silence again and you wanted to scream. This was more uncomfortable than anything else had ever been with him. Usually it was easy and light and that was why you liked him so much, that was why the two of you had initially become friends at all, but this... this was so heavy. Like something looming over the two of you that neither was addressing, just staring at it, aware that it was there but not doing anything about it.
This time, you cleared your throat, reached for the bedside lamp and turned that off too. The room was dark without it. You could only make out his contours next to you, hear the sound of his breath.
“Good night then”, you whispered, listening as his sheets rustled as well as he lay back, turning onto his side so that he was facing you. For a moment you felt the urge to do the same, but before you could even think about moving you were already swatting the idea away with an imaginary broom and locking it out of your imaginary house. Like hell you were gonna face him. Nuh-uh. You’d rather take the subway and the chlamydia after all.
“Good night”, he said softly, adjusting his hands one final time before the quiet of the night enveloped the two of you.
You tried to even your breathing, to focus on anything but him so close to you. You needed to sleep and you needed to sleep quick. But your mind was racing, your heart was beating so fast and so loud that you could hear it, your skin was burning up and you felt like you were about to lose it.
You managed about five minutes before you turned away from him, onto your side, in hopes that that would make it better.
It didn’t.
Five minutes after that, you tried lying on your stomach. Which, to nobody’s surprise, worked no better. It took almost fifteen minutes for you to find the courage to turn onto your right side, to turn so that you were facing him after all. He hadn’t moved an inch.
In fact, he hadn’t tried to sleep at all.
When you turned and caught sight of him (bare chest and messy hair and fuck) you almost screamed. His eyes were wide open, watching you, reflecting the little moonlight that was flooding through the windows.
“Jesus”, you whispered, pressing a hand to your chest as he grinned, his face mere inches from yours. “Bradley, you scared the hell out of me.”
He didn’t even react to that.
“Can’t sleep?”, he asked instead. He was so close that you could feel his breath on your skin when he spoke. You had to swallow.
“No”, you admitted. For a moment you thought maybe he hadn’t heard you, maybe he’d fallen asleep, but then he moved his arms and you felt a shiver down your spine when his fingertips brushed over the exposed skin of your arms. He wrapped one arm around your waist, his palm resting on the small of your back, and pulled you closer to him. So close that your knees bumped into his thighs. So close that your hands bumped into his torso. So close that your nose bumped into his throat.
All of them were innocent touches: chaste, easy, light. His skin was barely grazing yours. But they were enough.
Enough to go crazy over. Enough to hold your breath for a good half minute.
“Relax”, he muttered, his other hand threading through your hair and holding you just as close as the one on your back.
You swallowed hard.
“Bradley”, you murmured, not knowing just yet what you were going to say. Maybe you would have pulled away. Or maybe you would have bit the bullet and, for once in your life, taken the chance - maybe you would’ve told him right then and there just what you felt for him. Because friends certainly didn’t do this.
“We’ll talk tomorrow”, he muttered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head and immediately silencing your inner monologue. “Tomorrow. Just sleep for now.”

New Years
A week has passed since Christmas. The Christmas decor was stuff up, but it was going to be taken down in a couple of days after new years. It was New Years Eve and you all were excited to go into the new year together.
The last year brought a lot into your life. You met new people. Make more friends. You were reunited with the love of your life. Your daughter finally got to meet her dad, his friends, her papa Mav, Penny, Amelia. You got to marry Bradley. You live with him. You guys got a dog for your daughter and best of all, you welcomed two little boys. Expanded your family. Moved to a new place.
The year also brought a lot of hardships. You had to be away from your newly husband just after a month of marrying him. You had to leave your best friend behind. You nearly lost your husband. You went and are still watching him make his recovery and baby steps towards his career. But, all in all. This year brought you so much more purpose in life.
Bradley was at work getting some paperwork done for his officers. Jake, Nat, and Austin were getting ready for the night out. They asked if you wanted to join them for a couple of hours, and Phantom and Evelyn offered to watch the kids for the night. But you opted to stay home so you could give kisses to all three of them.
Austin, Nat and Jake came down the stairs all dressed nicely for their night out. Nat came from behind the couch and wrapped her arms around your shoulders.
“You sure you don’t want to come with for a couple of hours?”
You laughed and patted her hand. “No you all go ahead. I’m going to stay back with the kiddos and wait for Bradley.”
All three of them gave you a kiss on the cheek. “We will all see you in the morning.” Jake squeezed you a little tighter. “Happy New Year, Y/n.”
You patted Jake’s arms and smiled. “Thank you, Jake. Have fun you guys! Be safe!”
The three of them went to go and say bye to the kids as they played. You watched as they picked each of them up and kissed them and wished them a happy new year.
The three kids were playing on the floor. The boys sitting in their half donut pillows to help support them as they sat on their own, played with their toys. Leia was laying on her tummy reading a book from school. You were sitting on the couch watching them all play as you watched TV and drank some tea.
———-
Bradley’s POV
I had been stuck at work all day trying to finish up paperwork for the new year. I couldn’t wait to leave and go home to spend time with my family. I looked over at the clock in my office. 1845. “Damn I’ve been here for nearly 13 hours.” I stood up and stretched my back and looked out my window to the tarmac. A couple of the officers were down there doing their last checks on their planes before leaving for the day. There was a knock at my door.
“Bradshaw? You in here?” Phantom came in as he knocked on the frame.
I turned and smiled. “Right here, sir.” He came in and shook my hand. “You leaving for the day?”
He chuckled. “I’ve got another hour before I head out. Would you like some company or help with anything?” He sat at the chair in front of my desk.
I made my way around my desk and sat in my chair. “I should almost be done. Just going through some last minute changes for some routes the pilots are gonna fly in the new year. But the company will be nice as i finish it out.” I laughed as i continued to read the new route routine.
“You and y/n want Eve and I to watch the kids tonight?” He sat back in the seat and made small conversation with me.
I chuckled. “No, you, Eve, and the girls don’t have to do that for us. Y/n and I planned on staying home with the kids tonight.”
Phantom picked up my little model f-14 on my desk. “Awh the boys first new years!”
I nodded. “They’re getting so big now. And it is their first!” I signed a couple of route routines and put all the paperwork away. “Finally finished.” I neatly stacked all the worksheets and papers i had gone through in a pile.
“You done for the day, Brad?” Phantom placed the f-14 back in its place.
I sighed and nodded. “Finally. I’ve been sitting in this office for the last 12 hours finishing and pushing paperwork.”
Phantom started to laugh. “How do you like being a senior officer?”
I smiled and laid back in my chair. “It is a whole lot of paperwork, but it is a nice change of pace.”
———-
When we finally left the office, it was 1915. Phantom and I said out goodbyes and wished each other a happy new year.
“See ya next year, Rooster.” Phantom waved at me before hoping into his car.
I laughed. “Yea, see ya next year.” I shook my head and smiled. I got into the truck and headed to the store. I went in and grabbed a couple of New Year’s party hats and crowns. I grabbed a couple of bottles of apple juice and apple cider. I also grabbed some poppers and a couple of noise makers for the kids. I loaded the bags into the truck and headed home to you.
1950. “Finally home.” I got down from the car and grabbed the bags from the back. I opened the door. “I’m home, my loves!” I set the bags down and started to take off my shoes and hung up my hat.
“Daddy!!!” Leia came running through the house and jumped into my arms. I covered her in kisses.
“Hey my little love. I missed you today.” I started to make my way over to you. You picked up both boys and walked over towards me. “Oh baby, don’t pick both of them up.” I let Leia down and grabbed Luke from you. “Hi, baby. I missed you.” I gave you a kiss and then kissed the boys.
“I missed you too, Brad. How was work?” You smiled and wiped your chapstick from my lips.
I grabbed Bradley from your grasp and held both boys. “Busy as usual, honey. Just glad to be home.” I smiled and kissed the boys over and over again. We all made our way back to the couch and we all sat. Leia in between us and the boys on my lap. I looked around and listened. “Did the three older kids leave already?”
You started to chuckle. “Yes, our three eldest left already to go out.” You rested your arm on the back of the couch and laid your chin to your hand. The other reaching over to fix Luke’s tag coming out from his shirt. “They asked if we wanted to join again.”
I laughed and laid back as I watched the boys play with each other’s hands. “They just miss being with us, is all.” Brad put his fingers in my mouth. I gasped and munched on them gently as he started to laugh causing Luke to laugh too. “You boys are so big. Stop growing already.” I grabbed their little hands and gave each of them a kiss.
I leaned over and placed a kiss on Leia’s head and on your cheek. “I’m gonna go and clean up, sweetheart. Get out of this uniform.” I smiled at you as you nodded. I placed the boys back up against their pillows and headed up stairs.
———-
As I finished cleaning up, I looked at the time again. 2030. The time was flying by. I headed back down stairs in some sweats and a white t-shirt. You were getting dinner ready for us. I came into the kitchen and grabbed you from behind. I placed kisses on your neck. “What you making, mama?” I placed my chin on your head.
You giggled. “Leia wanted some Mac and Cheese so I’m making that, along with some chicken and rice.”
I took a deep breath in and smiled. “That is my favorite. Need any help?”
You turned around in my arms and shook your head. “I’m okay. But you can try and feed the boys their rice cereal today.” You poked my chest and smiled.
I nodded. “Yes ma’am.” I gave you a kiss before going to get the boys. I put their high chairs next to each other and went to get the boys. I placed each of them into a chair and put on their silicon bibs that had a food catch. I gave each of them a toy to play with while I got their food ready.
“Leia Rey, come and get your Mac and Cheese, babe.” You had a bowl ready for Leia. She ran over and grabbed it and then went to go and take a seat with her brothers.
I went into the fridge and grabbed one of their bottles that had your milk in it. I poured the whole bottle into a bowl and went to the pantry to grab the tub of the boys rice cereal. I brought it back out and started to scoop some to put into the bowl of milk. Then I mixed it and nuked it in the micro for 45 seconds. When it came out i tested it to make sure it wasn’t too hot for the boys.
“Alright boys. Let’s try today. Can you both eat this for daddy?” I said in the mushiest baby voice I had, causing them to both laugh. I placed the bowl onto the table and sat in a chair in front of the both of them. “Baby brother first.” I scooped some with he spoon and blew on it.
“Here we go Bradley boy. Open wide, babas. Here comes the fighter jet.” I started to mimic the noise. My mouth mimicked the movements little Brad’s mouth made. He spit a little bit up but i scooped it and put it back in his mouth. My eyes went wide.
“Babe! babe! He ate it! Bradley had his first dose of solid food!” I gasped and you ran over. “Now Lukey-Bear. Open up big boy. Here comes the airplane!” I mimicked noises again and my mouth mimicked Luke’s. He ate the whole spoon in one bite.
“OH MY GOSH!!!!” You and I jumped up in unison. Our baby boys had their first dose of solid-ish food. You and I hugged and Leia ran over to join. Leia gave her brothers kisses. I kissed your forehead and wiped your tears. “They did it, babe!!”
———-
2330. This was the latest all of us had stayed up in a long while. We were all practically falling asleep on the couch waiting. Leia was cuddled up on you, the boys both cuddled into my chest. Our kids were fast asleep. You and I were in and out of sleep as we patiently waited for the TV to show the ball drop. Frozen was playing on the TV as we all fell asleep.
———-
Phoenix’s POV
Austin, Hangman, and I stumbled back into the house around 0115. We were laughing because Hangman had just tripped up the drive way and fell face first into the front patio. Austin and I couldn’t breathe as he started to get up. We opened the front door shushing each other so we wouldn’t be loud.
I grabbed Hangman by one arm and Austin grabbed the other. We held him up because he was laughing so hard from falling.
“I feel like such a dumb ass! I hope the neighbors didn’t see that!” He barely whispered through his laughs.
We all walked over to the living area and the lights were still on. Austin went and grabbed us all water from the fridge. Hangman and I saw that The Little Mermaid was playing on the TV. Then we looked down on the couch and saw all 6 of you sleeping on the couch together. Leia cuddled up with you. Bradley with the boys cuddled up on his chest. Gunner in the middle of Bradley and you.
I gasped. “Oh my gosh! How cute!” I said in a whisper. Austin came over to see what the commotion was about.
“That is so precious. They fell asleep before the New year.” He handed us our waters.
I snapped a picture and went to grab blankets. We placed blankets onto all of you and gave everyone kisses. “Good night you guys. Happy New Year. See you all in the morning.”
Jake turned the TV off and left a couple of lights on for you all. The three of us went upstairs to change and get ready for bed. The three of us opted to stay downstairs with you all and sleep, just in case if you guys needed the help.
———-
Your POV
The next morning you woke up and saw you all had fallen asleep on the couch. You stretched slightly and sat up. You saw Jake, Nat, and Austin sleeping on the floor in front of you. you started to laugh. You laid Leia down on the couch and covered her with the blanket. Bradley heard you stirring around and he woke up. He looked around and looked at you.
“Did we fall asleep down here?” He was shocked.
You nodded and laughed. “Yes we did. And before the new year.”
Bradley started to chuckled. “Of course, we did, sweetheart.” He puckered his lips and you went to give him a kiss. “Happy New Year, my love. And the many more to come. I can’t wait to see what this year holds for us. I love you, forever, honey.” He smiled up at you as he continued to hold the boys on his chest.
“Happy New Year, Bradley. I love you, always.”

pt 6  pt 8
************** (26 and 3)
It was that time again, yours and Bradley's birthday. But this one you weren’t spending together, Bradley was currently deployed and you were in California at home with your toddler.
“Y/N, why don’t you find a babysitter and come to the Hard Deck? You work so hard, you deserve a break on your birthday,” Penny said through the phone.
The bar wasn’t even open, it was only 4, but Penny didn’t mind letting you come by early before the rush of pilots showed up.
“I don’t know Pen. He’s been such a handful today and I don’t want to bother Serenity, she’s getting stuff ready for school-”
“I’ve already talked to Sarah, you just have to make the call.” You sighed, “Okay, thank you Penny.” “Of course, Y/N.”
You hung up and ran a hand down your face. “Hey, Nicky?” He ran around the corner, “Yeah, Mama?”
“Do you wanna go to Uncle Ice’s?” He nodded, “Yes, ma’am!” You smiled, “Okay, go change and I’ll pack you a bag.”
He quickly did as told and you packed him a bag that would last him a few hours, calling the Kazansky’s in the process.
“Hey, Y/N, you dropping Nick off?” You chuckled at the fact she already knew. “Yes, ma’am. We’ll be there in a bit.”
“See you soon, hun.” You hung up grabbing your keys as you went in search of your son.
“Nicky, you ready?” You asked, leaning on his bedroom door frame. He had a white t-shirt on and a Hawaiian shirt that his uncle had bought him. “Baby, your shirt’s on wrong. Can I fix it?” He nodded, and held his arms out.
You flipped the button up shirt around and put it on him properly. “There we go. You ready?” He nodded and made grabby hands, telling you he wanted to be picked up. You picked him up and you left to drop him off at the Admiral’s house.
****
Once you got there you got him out of his carseat and held his hand as you walked to the door.
“Now, promise me you’ll be good for Ice and Sarah?” He nodded, “Okay, Mama.” You kissed his forehead and gave Sarah his bag.
“Now I packed stuff in case he wanted to go to the beach.” You looked back at your son, “Nicky, I love you baby.” “Wove you too Mama.”
“Is that my favorite Bradshaw?”
“Ice!” Nick turned at the sound of the pilot's voice.
The toddler carefully got off the porch and ran to the man.
“Hey, buddy!” Ice scooped him up and walked up the steps, meeting you with a side hug and temple kiss at the top. “Hey birthday girl.” You hummed and hugged him back, “Hey Ice, you’re home early.” “We had an early day.”
You nodded, “Ah, I see. Okay, well I’m gonna be on my way. Be good, Nicky. Please call me if you need anything.”
“Bye, Mama!” Your son reached up to peck your temple much like he watched Ice and Bradley do, and it made your heart swell.
****
You have been at the Hard Deck nursing the same drink for the past 2 hours. You were having fun; it wasn’t particularly busy, just full of pilots, most of them young and you didn’t recognize them.
You looked around and chuckled slightly, “Where did all the pilots come from?” Penny chuckled, “Did you not hear? They’re all here for Top Gun.” “Wait, Top Gun?!” You looked around again, seeing the young pilots play pool and talking to girls that swoon at the site of a uniform.
“You look awfully lonely, Darlin’.”
You turned back to see a man in his khaki uniform and he was just oozing charm. Penny glanced at you, wanting to know if you need her to handle it but you just tapped the bar and she nodded, moving to another area.
“And you look awfully cocky, Lieutenant.”
The man seemed surprised you knew his rank, but didn’t mention it. “Name’s Hangman.”
“Ah, the call sign,” you commented, hiding your smirk by taking a drink. “I’m Y/N. And I would ask where you got that name, but I think I can figure it out.”
He just chuckled, leaning against the bar and looking at the ground. “So, are you in the Navy or-” “My dad was, my brother and uncle are.”
He nodded, “Right, so did your dad retire?” The way you shifted and took a quick sip of your drink told him that wasn’t the case. “I’m sorry.” You shook off the apology, “Don’t be. It was a long time ago.”
You knew that you had to lighten the mood, cause after that most men make it worse.
“So, what’s the name behind the call sign?” You added a smile to show him that you were comfortable talking to him. He smiled back, “Jake Seresin.”
You sat up straighter, “Well, Lieutenant Seresin, why don’t you sit down? Unless
” You turned slightly towards the pool tables, “You have a pool game to get back to.” He shook his head, sitting down, “I’d rather give you my attention.” You playfully smacked his arm and Jake felt electrified, something that didn’t normally happen to him.
He was the playboy, he didn’t get butterflies. He didn’t smile, he smirked. He didn’t laugh, he chuckled. But something about you just flipped this switch, and he didn’t want to turn it off.
“So, what are you doing here all alone?” You giggled a little, your cheeks tinting pink, “It’s my birthday actually.” He arched a brow, “And you’re spending it alone in a bar?”
“Hey, don’t knock it till you try it,” you laughed dryly. “And you’re here, I’m not completely alone.”
“Well I’m happy to be of service,” he smiled again.
He nudged your shoulder, “But seriously, wouldn’t you rather party? Really let loose.” You sipped your drink, “I’ve never been a fan of partying, not since high school. And, not to get all sentimental, but my twin is currently deployed and I normally celebrate with him.” Jake nodded in understanding.
“Let me buy you a drink, a new drink because you’ve been nursing that one for a while. It can’t taste good.” You shook your head, “No it’s-” You took another sip, “Okay, you’re right. It’s not good.”
Jake couldn’t help but chuckle and that turned into a laugh once you started laughing. “So, is that a yes to that drink?”
You hesitated, not wanting to lead Jake on because, while he had that pilot's cockiness, he seemed to be sweet when it mattered.
You were hesitant to date because, yes, you still loved Kendall, but you knew that you had to move on. You tried a year ago and that didn’t end well, you honestly wanted to just stay single. But being a single mom wasn’t easy

And despite how hard you tried to tell yourself that ‘Mom didn’t move on, why should I?’, it was like she was thumping you on the back of your head and telling you that you aren’t her and you deserve someone that will make you happy.
Not to say you weren’t happy, cause you were.
Nick brought you so much joy, and that was another thing that froze your dating life. Men -let’s be real, boys- aren’t always up to date a single mom. They don’t want the responsibility of a child that isn’t even theirs.
And you weren’t just going to settle with a man that made you happy, you needed a man that made him happy as well. Nick is your world, and Nick deserved someone that loved him as much as his biological father would.
You sighed before smiling at the blond, “Sure, why not? It’s my birthday after all.” Jake smiled in victory.
Penny had overheard and made her way over, “Anything I can get you two?” As Jake reached into his wallet, Penny winked at you. “What’ll it be?” “I’ll take whatever you have on tap. Birthday girl?” You blushed a little at the name. “You want the same thing you had?” You nodded, sliding the watered down Amaretto to Penny. “Please.”
She slid Jake his glass and you yours. “Can I get you two anything else?” You glanced at Jake and he just shrugged, letting you decide, “Not right now, Pen. I’ll catch you if I do.” She nodded and once again, moved on.
“Thank you for the drink, Hangman.” He nodded, “Of course, birthday girl. And please, call me Jake, it’s just the two of us.” Your lips curled into a flirty smirk, “Well, thank you, Jake.”
He comically shivered, but he also actually shivered, “I like the way that sounds. You say my name so pretty. And anything you want tonight is on me.” You giggled and bumped his shoulder a little, “Aren’t you a stud, Lieutenant?” He barked out a laugh, his blush darkening his tanned face.
A song came on, making Jake perk up and smirk. “Wanna go dance?” You looked nervously at Penny who encouraged you with a smile.
You nodded and downed the rest of your drink, coughing a little, “Bad idea.” Jake laughed again, finding your little comments, whether they’re under your breath or out loud, hilarious.
You accepted his outstretched hand and moved to the little area that wasn’t necessarily for dancing, but that’s where everyone normally dances.
As you danced, you and Jake carried on conversing.
“So, Top Gun?” He nodded, “Yeah, best of the best, Darlin’.”
“Well, you’ve already got the ego,” you teased, giggling at the end as Jake spun you.
When you landed back in his arms you looked up at him, “Do you do this with all the girls, Lieutenant?” “Just on their birthday,” he winked as he continued to sway, hands on your hips.
You had honestly been a little surprised that Jake was keeping his hands on your hips or waist, not squeezing or anything and not moving them to your ass like most guys did.
You just smiled back, unconsciously playing with the short hair at the base of his head while getting lost in his green eyes.
All the while he was getting lost in your (e/c) eyes, and melting into your fingertips that gently scratched his head and neck. He didn’t think this was a feeling he ever would crave, but here he was being slowly coiled around this woman’s finger and he didn’t want to run away.
He had gotten so caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t notice that you had started singly softly as the song changed. “Pretty, funny, and can sing? You are just the total package, ain’t ya?” You laugh, a pang of guilt and insecurity in your chest. “I don’t know about that one.”
“Oh,” Jake scoffed, “Don’t sell yourself short, Darlin’. I’m sure you’ve got a line of guys at your door.” You shook your head, “No, actually.” He didn’t hide his genuine shock, “Well, I guess I’m first in line.” “I guess-”
Your phone rang.
You sighed, “I’m so sorry. I need to take this.” Jake nodded and let you go, making sure you made it to the door without interruptions. The pilot sighed and made his way back to the bar.
“Don’t get too close to her.” He heard someone say off to his side.
“Excuse me?”
“Look, she does this all the time,” the man was clearly drunk, but Hangman couldn’t help the slight disappointment in his chest.
“Some poor soul flirts with her, buys her a few drinks. Then she gets a phone call, once it’s over she comes back but is checking it every few minutes. She’s obviously just getting free drinks and getting a kick out of getting some poor guy's hopes up before shutting him down and going home. She’s probably already got a man-”
“Malcolm, do I need to remind you of the rules?” Penny interjected, finally being able to step away from the patron in front of her. “Either: shut the hell up, buy the whole bar a round, or I’ll call you a cab.” The man shut his mouth and held out his card. “That’s what I thought.” She closed his tab but his friend was already at the bar and could drive him home.
“I’m sorry about that, Lieutenant. Don’t listen to him, he doesn’t know shit.” Jake nodded and glanced back outside, seeing you at a table just to the right of the stairs on the sand still on the phone.
“What’s her favorite appetizer?” Penny smiled, already being able to tell what was happening, “Nachos probably.”
Jake turned back to her, “Do you have any deserts? Pie, cake, ice cream?”
“She’ll probably want ice cream, it’s pretty warm out today.” Jake nodded, “Okay, I’ll take nachos and two orders of her favorite ice cream.” Penny nodded and quickly sent the nacho order to the kitchen and made the ice cream herself, making sure to add a little bit more to yours.
****
You had finished your call before Penny had filled the order.
Nick was missing you and was crying because he wanted to talk to you, claiming to have missed your voice. Which instantly made you tear up.
So you talked to him and he managed to let it slip that they were on the way to the beach. You told him to be sure and stay by Sarah or Ice’s side and not wander off. He said okay and told you he loved you then hung up.
“Hey, everything okay?”
“Oh my gosh!” You jumped at the sound of Jake's voice. He laughed, green eyes crinkling in the corner, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” He was still laughing and laughed harder when you playfully narrowed your eyes at him.
You looked at what was in his hands, “Wait, are those nachos?” He nodded, grinning wide, “Sure are, Penny said they were your favorite.” You blushed, realizing he most definitely asked.
“So, was that your boyfriend?”
You shook your head, scratching at your temple, “No, it was a friend. She was needing some help.” He nodded, wanting to believe you but something was telling him you weren’t telling the truth. “Oh okay.”
You grabbed a chip, “Thank you, you didn’t have to.” “You’re welcome.”
You make small talk as you eat the nachos.
“So, you know what I do, but what do you do?” You nodded, swallowing the bite in your mouth, “I’m actually a high school teacher, and I’m an assistant coach for the softball team.” He nodded, humming, “Really? That’s cool.”
You shrugged, “Not as cool as flying a fighter jet.” Jake laughed, “Don’t stroke my ego, now.” “I wouldn’t dream of it,” you winked and ate a chip.
“You said your dad and uncle were in the Navy, and your brother’s on a deployment. Why didn’t you join?” You shrugged, dusting off your hands as you ate your last chip, “I was going to, but something got in the way. I went to Arkansas for college to play softball and I got a degree in teaching.” Jake nodded, swallowing his bite before asking, “Why teaching?”
You brought your legs to lay flat on the bench, “Well I want to help people. So, if I couldn’t do it through the Navy, why not teach and be the support for kids that need it.” He nodded.
“What made you want to be a pilot?” You asked, grabbing a chip. Jake smiled fondly, “My granddad, he was a sailor actually, and that’s why I chose the Navy, but then I heard all about aviation and it just struck a chord.” You smiled as you watched the smile on his face grow, but had to look away when the door opened.
“Hey, I got your ice cream,” Penny said.
You looked from her to Jake. “You didn’t have to, Jake. Seriously this is too much.” Jake scoffed, “Nonsense, it’s your birthday.” You gave me a smile, “Thank you.” “Of course.”
Penny kissed the top of your head, “Happy birthday.” “Thank you,” you squeezed her hand as she walked off.
You opened your mouth to take a bite of ice cream, when a scream made you drop your spoon.
“Mama!”
Both you and Jake snapped your heads in the direction of the sound but saw just a kid getting tickled by his dad screaming for mom to save him while she records.
You and Jake relax, and you sighed rather sadly. He noticed, but didn’t say anything.
Then before you could start a conversation, a force hit you.
“Oh!” You looked down to see a blond head of hair. “Hey, bubba, what are you doin’ here?” You quickly glanced around for Sarah or Ice, seeing them a good couple yards away.
Jake watched you pick up the boy and sit him in your lap. He smiled as he watched the two of you.
“I found a shell!” The toddler shoved the shell in your face, making you flinch back and chuckle. “That’s really pretty, Nicky! Can I see it?” You opened your palm and the 3 year old pressed it into your hand. “It’s for you! Happy birthday, Mama!”
Jake perked up at that, but when he saw how you slightly tensed up he didn’t comment on it.
“Oh, really? Thank you, baby.” You kissed his head. He then pushed his head into your shoulder, and that’s when you realized he must have noticed Jake.
“Nick? You okay buddy?” He nodded, and turned to face the man sitting across from you, but still leaned into you.
“Nick, this is Jake. Jake, this is my son, Nick.” The pilot beamed, “Hi, Nick.” Nick just waved. “Nicky, Jake is a pilot.” Your son perked up at that and it made the both of you chuckle. “Really?”
Jake nodded, chuckling at the excitement on your son’s face.
“Hey, you want some ice cream?” You asked, holding up the spoon. Nick nodded, grabbing the spoon with both hands and taking the bite.
Jake laughed, taking a bite of his own ice cream, “How old are you Nick?” He was answered with three tiny fingers. Jake’s eyes widened, “Wow, 3?” Nick nodded, smiling at the pilot.
You move to take the spoon and Nick moves it out of the way, pouting a little and causing Jake to hold back a laugh. You playfully scoffed, “What if Mama wants a bite?” A mischievous grin spread across your son’s face. You glanced at Jake and he had one too.
Nick took the spoon and got some ice cream on it. He used both hands to guide the spoon to your mouth. Jake chuckled beside you and you narrowed your eyes at him, but took the bite.
You covered your mouth, “Thank you Nicky.” The boy nodded and put the spoon in the bowl. “I’m gonna go swim and build sandcastles with Ice, okay Mama?” You nodded, “Okay baby.” You kissed his cheek and he stood on the seat to peck your temple.
And just like your heart had done hours earlier, Jake’s heart melted.
You put Nick down. “Happy birthday Mama. I love you!” You cupped his cheek and ran your thumb over the apple of it, “Thank you, I love you too.” He turned and waved to Jake, “Bye Mr. Jake!” Jake waved back, “Bye Nick!”
As you watched to make sure Nick got safely back to Sarah and Ice, Jake started to put together the true story versus what was said to him at the bar. But he still wasn’t sure if you had a partner.
“Cute kid,” Jake said, when you turned back around. “Thank you, made him myself,” you chuckled at your own joke, taking a bite of ice cream. Jake scoff laughed, shaking his head while also taking a bite.
He swallowed his bite and prepared himself for the awkward conversation that was about to follow. “So, do you have a boyfriend?” He watched carefully as your brows pulled together and a misty cloud filled your eyes.
Sighing, you spoke quietly, something he could tell wasn’t a normal occurrence despite only knowing you for a little bit. “No, I don’t have a boyfriend.”
While hearing that should have made him happy, he could tell that there was something else. And he braced himself to get shut down for asking this, “What happened?”
Before you could answer he spoke up again, “You don’t have to tell me.” You shook your head, “No, I think it’s time I talked about it, to someone other than Penny and my brother.” You dryly chuckled and braced yourself to tell, practically a stranger, something very personal.
Without really thinking, Jake grabbed your hand in an attempt to comfort you.
“Nick’s dad
He was killed in a car accident before our son was even born.” He squeezed your hand, “I’m sorry, going through that must not have been easy.”
“It wasn’t,” you glanced into the bar seeing Penny go back and forth between patrons. “But I wasn’t alone. Though I’m sure he and my parents are somewhere scolding me.” Jake tilted his head, “What do you mean?”
You bit your lip, “I haven’t really dated since Nick was born. The last time I tried, it didn’t end well
I was expecting too much, trying to replace Nick’s father
and just– it’s hard, honestly. Most guys don’t want to raise a kid that isn’t theirs. And Nick-” Both you and Jake glanced out to where the toddler was splashing in the surf.
“He is my entire world and he will always come first to me. So, anyone I’m with, I need to make sure they make him happy, too. I need to know that they will put in the effort to care about him as much as they care about me.”
That was when Jake decided that he was going to take things slow with you. He wasn’t going to try to get your number right now, he’d wait and get it when you felt like he was all in.
He was going to really make an effort to get to know you and Nick. Because, something about you made him want to be different and then seeing that you had a son, he really knew he had to earn his trust first.
