This fic is FAR from done. I'm just building up most of the background right now (with the amazing wonderful help from @/pinksparkl)

And for once, it's not a character/listener. That's right it's charxchar! And it's not even Damien and Huxley!

But Messy! Who is then? Great question. It's Vega and Brachium because SOMEONE (@/clover-46) sent me art of Vega and Brachium and then I had this angst idea while talking to her about it and now I'm writing it. And chances are it's probably going on Ao3 since it's getting kind of long. But I can still tag people with the link when it's posted (which again, might not be for a while so this taglist is going to be open for quite a bit.)

Fear not, those who still want Warden/Vega because that will be in here too!

We are Sadism demons, Vega. This is our sustenance. Every demon and daemon has a specialty. If you want a feeding partner you’d want to find one of your own kind or an inchoate. They can feed on anything. Empathy and Serenity daemons are too much of a bleeding heart for us to coexist together entirely. Concubi can suffice, but it really depends on what's happening in the interaction for us to properly feed. She answered. The sidelong glance she gave him made Vega suspect that she knew he was thinking about Brachium. He looked away from her, staring down at the lifeless corpse at their feet. "

December tends to bring a chill in the air and the promise of rain. These months also brought Vega the promise of nights spent huddled up in blankets close to the fireplace while his beloved husband Brachium read next to him. 

The past few weeks have been a busy time for the pair, which brought them few opportunities to spend time together before nightfall. With their schedules being packed due to the holiday rush, late afternoons are one of the few moments they get to spend together before Vega has to leave for work in the evening.

Today, it might as well have been nighttime, with how dark the sky had gotten over the course of the afternoon. There are things to like about every season, and while the cold winter brings was never one of Vega’s favorite part, the only upside to it is spending nights indoors. Unfortunately, the rumble of thunder in the distance wasn’t a good omen for the laundry currently drying outdoors. 

The moment Brachium got up from their bundle of blankets, Vega had wordlessly followed, intending to help speed up the process of saving their laundry so the pair could hurry back to their spot by the fire. He just hadn’t expected to be delegated to “holding the laundry basket” duty, standing close enough that Brachium’s shoulder occasionally brushed against his own as they moved.

“Sure you don’t want me to assist you?” Vega offered. “We could get back inside faster if I helped you.”

“You act like a wet cat whenever you’re in the cold,” Brachium took down another one of his shirts, and Vega could practically hear the soft smile in his partner’s voice when he continued. “The storm won’t be coming for a while. We might as well take our time.”

Vega huffed, shifting the basket slightly. “Is it a crime to prefer your warmth over the chill biting through my jacket?”  

Brachium’s first response is to toss a shirt Vega’s way. He managed to barely catched it before it hit his face. 

“You’re lucky I love you,” Vega muttered, tucking the shirt into the basket.

“It’s hardly my fault you grabbed something so thin,”  Brachium’s laugh is light, his smile equally sweet as he tossed another pair of socks. “I can’t control the weather, no matter how much I want it to comply with your preferences.”

Vega rolled his eyes, but a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he watched Brachium move with efficiency, his hands quick but deliberate. He watched the way his husband hummed softly under his breath, entirely at ease despite the chill in the air.

A flash of lightning illuminated the sky for a moment, another clap of thunder serving as their warning. Vega set down the basket to help take down the remaining clothes, and by the time they were done, the first drops of rain were just beginning to fall.

Vega carried the basket into the laundry room, remembering to start the dryer while Brachium lingered by the front door. When Vega returned, he found his husband watching the storm roll in through the doorway, his arms folded as the rain steadily picked up.

The sound of the rain was mesmerizing—a steady rhythm that seemed to fill every corner of the house. The faint smell of wet earth, carried in on the breeze, mingled with the crisp, rain-soaked air. Vega paused for a moment, taking it all in before stepping closer to Brachium.

Brachium turned, smiling when his eyes caught Vega’s. “There you are. Join me?”

“You’re going to catch a cold,” Vega chided, though he made no move to pull Brachium back inside. He knew his husband loved watching storms, loved observing the way the clouds churned and how the rain fell from the sky.

“Not if you stand here with me,” Brachium replied.

So of course, Vega made his way to Brachium’s side. His hand moved to rest on his husband’s hip, while Brachium’s head made its way to rest on Vega’s shoulder. 

“It’s nice. Getting to spend the evening with you like this, I mean,” Brachium said.

“It’s barely six.”

“You know what I mean,” Brachium smiled, leaning into Vega’s warmth. “I miss having you around when you’re off at work.”

Vega hummed in agreement. They spent a few more moments together, enjoying each other’s warmth, the sound and the smell of the rain. A flash of lightning, a clap of thunder in the distance, a rush of wind that tousled Vega’s hair, and the rain grew stronger.

He felt Brachium shift beside him. Vega watched as Brachium stuck his hand out so the back of his hand could feel the rain. So of course, Vega paused to adjust his jacket sleeve so it wouldn’t get wet before copying Brachium — he extended his hand to feel the rain. He felt each drop fall on the back of his hand. The rain was cool and persistent, each droplet distinct yet blending into the next. There was a rhythm to it, the way the rain drummed lightly against his skin.

Vega took a breath before breaking the silence, “What’s on your mind?”

Brachium turned slightly, meeting Vega’s eyes for a moment before looking at their outstretched hands, “You know me too well, don’t you?”

“Comes with the territory of being married for...” Vega paused, pretending to think before continuing, “Oh, a little over a decade maybe? Or is it closer to two?”

Brachium laughed, a sound as light as the rain. “Just… thinking about how life can be so fast sometimes. We barely have time to just rest and enjoy what’s in front of us.”

Vega tilted his head, ready to respond, but Brachium moved before he could speak. Without a word, Brachium stepped into the rain, his hands outstretched as the downpour soaked through his clothes. He turned back, his grin wide and inviting. “So let’s enjoy the rain. Just you and me,”

Vega sighed in mock exasperation, but the smile that tugged at his lips gave his true feelings away. “You’re impossible,” he muttered, a smile tugging at his lips.

So of course, Vega doesn’t even hesitate. He closed the door behind him and joined his husband in the rain. The cold soaked through his clothes almost immediately, but it didn’t matter. He let himself laugh, let Brachium pull him close. Vega cupped Brachium’s face and leaned in, their foreheads touching for a moment before their lips met in a tender kiss.

In that moment, Vega thought maybe the cold wasn’t all that bad after all.
