BOYCOTT EUROVISION FOR ISRAEL PARTICIPATION.

I am the Eurovision gay this time of year, I love this show. Not only is my country hosting 2024 but it's also in a city I love, but I can't watch as people sing about peace and love while Palestinians are getting killed by one of the participants.

I've complied a couple of petitions, open letters and information regarding Eurovision: Eurovision isn't the highest priority regarding Gaza, but this show is marketing & tourism for countries, Israel is using it to pink wash their politics

According to SVT, Swedish television network in charge of Eurovision 2024 in Sweden Malmö, Eurovision is apolitical, and therefore Israel qualify. They refer to any calls for boycott meaningless ( via )

Eurovision has always been political, and was created as a celebration of peace after WW2. Songs are statements, and EBU took action by banning Russia and Belarus for the invasion of Ukraine. It's a way to show sympathy and solidarity, which Gaza is in need of now.

Why Eurovision is so important to Israel is the opportunity of pink washing, and appearing liberal and LGBTQ-friendly, that the show encourages. This leads to great marketing and tourism for the country, alqueerian on twitter did a great thread about it:

“How does it feel to be on the wrong side of history?” These were the words flung at a student wearing a Star of David necklace by a leader of one of Binghamton University’s LGBTQ+ clubs.

When the visibly shaken student found Myles Resnick, in the Hillel office, Resnick, a queer peer leader, empathized. Tensions were escalating on campus following the narrow passage of a boycott, divestment and sanctions resolution against Israel on campus last April. But the hurled comment stung Resnick because it came from a friend of his who led an LGBTQ+ organization Resnick was active in. 

This exchange reflects the growing rift between LGBTQ+ activists and Jewish students, many of whom feel increasingly isolated by the strong pro-Palestinian stance within queer organizations. At Binghamton, support for BDS from LGBTQ+ groups, including the university’s Rainbow Pride Union, mirrors a broader national trend of queer groups aligning with the pro-Palestinian cause.

These groups include No Justice No Pride, ACT UP NYC, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, and Black and Pink, allof which have taken public stances deeply critical of Israel and Zionism since the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023 and the subsequent war. Many queer Jewish teens who once looked to these groups for solidarity and support now feel marginalized by their positions. Disagreeing with the organizations’ statements, they say they feel ostracized from the broader LGBTQ+ community. For these already vulnerable teens, the shift has deepened their sense of isolation and alienation.

Sophia Barenholtz, a senior at a high school in Essex County, New Jersey, has found herself feeling increasingly unsafe and unwelcome in her own LGBTQ+ community. “I have definitely noticed the tendency for LGBTQ+ organizations to take an anti-Zionist, and often antisemitic, stance on the Israel-Hamas War,” she said. “It has made me feel unsafe and unwanted in my own community, and has me questioning the integrity and critical thinking skills of my LGBTQ peers.” 

Barenholtz said that she finds it disappointing that a community that values open-mindedness and understanding won’t consider the voices of queer Jews asking for Israel to be given a chance. 

“Instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue, some people have called me antisemitic slurs, sent me death threats, and wished for me to impose unspeakable harm upon myself,” Barenholtz said. “It’s especially unfortunate that these remarks have come from members of my school’s LGBTQ+ organizations and members of the LGBTQ+ community.” Barenholtz’s school district is currently under a federal investigation for an unspecified allegation of bias related to the disputes between Muslim and Jewish students

Meanwhile, accusations against Israel of “pinkwashing” highlight another wedge within the community. Israel, which advocates describe as a haven for LGBTQ+ people, decriminalized same sex relations in 1988 and passed many anti-discriminatory laws to protect LGBTQ+ individuals in the 1990s. Critics claim the country uses LGBTQ+ rights and promotes these positions to obscure its treatment of Palestinians. Israel’s defenders point to the harsh treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Gaza and neighboring regions, including Egypt and Lebanon. In 2016, a Hamas leader was tortured and executed after being accused of being gay, according to a report in the left-leaning Haaretz. 

On Oct. 7, the one-year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, the New York City-based Anti-Violence Project, an LGBTQ+ defense group, issued a statement accusing Israel of “genocide.” A Wider Bridge, which promotes ties between LGBTQ+ groups in America and Israel, called the statement inflammatory and unhelpful, and said it reflected a “callous indifference to the human suffering experienced” on Oct. 7 and after, “particularly by LGBTQ Jews in New York City.”

Shir Levenson, a Jewish LGBTQ+ high school junior from Long Island, said that pro-Palestinian stances from LGBTQ+ groups make her feel disconnected. “When these groups take such extreme positions, it makes me feel like I don’t belong,” she said. Levenson explained that she’s unfollowed influencers and celebrities, including  Matt Bernstein and Reneé Rapp, because of what she calls their anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian narrative. “I thought they’d recognize the truth and support Israel, which is more accepting of LGBTQ people, rather than places where we’re persecuted,” she said. “Their extreme positions, like accusing Israel of genocide, don’t acknowledge the humanity on both sides.”

JTA reached out to ACT UP NYC for comment but received no response. The group’s website accuses Israel of genocide and states that “Israel bombs Queers,” while also criticizing GLAAD, a leading LGBTQ+ media monitoring group, for not taking a stance on the conflict. GLAAD, which has faced criticism for its partnership with the Antidefamation League, released a statement in October expressing sympathy for all those affected by the conflict and calling for an end to antisemitism and Islamophobia. Pro-Palestinian advocates boycotted GLAAD’s 2024 awards, an event that celebrates LGBTQ+ trailblazers.

Some within the LGBTQ+ Jewish community do not feel this tension. Avi Chesler, from Huntington, New York, said he feels comfortable in LGBTQ+ affinity spaces. He blames the natural divisions that the issue causes, and laments “some of my Jewish community’s [inability] to acknowledge Palestinian suffering alongside Israeli suffering, despite the constant pain for all affected that so many members of the community feel.”

Jewish Voice for Peace, an anti-Zionist organization, links LGBTQ+ liberation with broader social justice goals, including justice for Palestinians. “At JVP, we understand that all people’s liberation is intertwined, and we work towards a world where everyone is safe and free,” media coordinator Liv Kunins-Berkowitz said. “Our commitment to LGBTQ+ rights is inextricably linked with ending genocide, occupation, apartheid, and militarism, which endangers queer people across the world. Queer liberation in Palestine is only possible in a free Palestine.”

Other Jewish groups remain committed to supporting LGBTQ+ youth while acknowledging the pain on both sides of the conflict. “LGBTQ+ Jewish youth deserve, always, to feel genuine belonging as their full, authentic selves,” Keshet, a Jewish LGBTQ+ organization, wrote in a statement to JTA. 

“Especially since the attacks against Israel on October 7th and the ensuing war in Gaza — with ongoing loss and suffering for both Israelis and Palestinians, we have seen an increase in painful division and hate,” wrote Jamie Krass, Keshet’s director of youth programs. “In these times, it is particularly critical that queer Jewish youth have access to affirming community, without needing to leave any parts of their identities at the door.” 

Amelia Mamlet, a queer, Jewish and openly Zionist high school senior from New Jersey, felt the growing tension firsthand. “I’ve noticed that a lot of LGBTQ+ organizations I once followed have taken pro-Palestinian or even anti-Israel stances. It makes me feel unseen,” she said. Mamlet described her discomfort watching liberal groups that she once supported adopt strong anti-Israel positions. “I’m more liberal myself, but when I see these organizations being anti-Israel, it feels like I can’t stand with them, even though I agree with so many of their other ideologies,” Mamlet said. “It leaves me feeling like there’s no place for someone like me.”

Mamlet said LGBTQ+ organizations should focus on supporting queer individuals rather than taking divisive political stances on international conflicts. “We’re already vulnerable. These spaces are supposed to protect us, not alienate us further.”

Mia Rubenstein, a sophomore at Tufts University, once considered the LGBTQ+ Center on her campus a safe space. “Before the conflict, the Q Center felt welcoming,” she said. As part of a pre-orientation LGBTQ+ advocacy group, Rubenstein found comfort there. “But after October 7, they publicly supported Palestine, and it made me feel really uncomfortable.” The center ran events with Students for Justice in Palestine, or SJP, and Rubenstein noticed the group following SJP on social media while showing no support for Jewish or pro-Israel groups. 

“It felt like you had to be LGBTQ and pro-Palestine to be welcomed. You couldn’t just be LGBTQ without also subscribing to their political stance,” she said. This realization left her feeling disconnected from a community she had invested time in. 

Resnick, the Binghamton student, felt a similar shift when LGBTQ organizations, such as the Rainbow Pride Union, a queer student club, endorsed a BDS resolution in April. Though Binghamton’s official LGBTQ+ center didn’t take an official position, its leadership expressed anti-Israel views and continued to run events with groups such as the Rainbow Pride Union.

“The president of the Rainbow Pride Union used to be a close friend, and now I’m literally blocked on Instagram,” he said. After voicing support for Israel and speaking out against the BDS resolution, Resnick faced backlash from his peers. “I released an article to share at the [BDS] hearing, and after that, I was slammed by people who were very involved in the queer community.”

“That was the moment [when] it all sort of clicked for me. This isn’t just something we’re tiptoeing around. This is something that’s really important to me, and it made me feel like I can’t be in that space if I disagree,” he said.

"You-you just don't understand..." Justin sighed in frustration, the room thick with the ongoing tension between you two. A delightful, relaxing afternoon of the two of you cooking together, talking for hours and making some sweet love now had turned into an argument.

It all had started with a joke you had giggled out, mentioned that Justin's racist fans would maybe try to boycott the final season of The Umbrella Academy due to him dating a gorgeous black woman like you. At first, you thought that he'd laugh along with you because the idea was actually funny but once you were met with Justin's cold stare, you knew that you might have struck a nerve.

A big one even.

"What don't I understand, Justin? It was a stupid joke, of course your show will air its final season. Hundred thousands of people are eagerly waiting for it. Netflix won't consciously fumble their bag like that..." you explained with a sigh, slowly getting annoyed too now.

The two of you were sitting on the couch, not cuddling anymore but shooting cold glares at one another now. You did miss the soft warmth of your boyfriend's chest, the soft thumping of his steady heartbeat near your ear.

"Babe, the joke is offensive. Imagine one of my fans saying that about you? Wanting me to dump you due to your skin color...".

Your eyes widened at this statement while a dark cloud of anger started bubbling in your stomach.

"Wow" you huffed, shaking your head in disbelief while clenching your jaw. "Would you dump me for your fans?". The question shot out of you before you could even realize it. Your boyfriend blinked in shock as his cheeks suddenly changed into a soft pink shade. He didn't say a word.

Justin was prone to blushing for 3 reasons:

3. Being caught doing something

Your eyes didn't leave his rosy cheeks as he suddenly struggled to create a sentence, tumbling over a few syllables as his eyes avoided your face.

"Talk to me..." you whispered, an uneasy feeling now creeping under your skin, a part of you wanting to run and hide but this was not the time for such foolery.

"I-I wouldn't...", your boyfriend hushed in a whisper so light, you easily could've overheard it.

"But..?" , you added.

"I've been having some doubts." , Justin finished. It was quiet after his statement as you needed a few seconds to actually chew over his words. This was new. Not once had you noticed or thought about your lover having doubts about your relationship. About you.

"My love" he gently whispered, panic slowly rising within him. This was not how he had planned to address his fears. The sight of you sitting there, shocked and speechless was very unpleasant. He knew that he had hurt you. He knew that he had reacted in the wrong way.

"What are your doubts about?" you asked, fixing your eyes back to his face while your heart sounded in your chest. Your fingers automatically started to tap softly against your thick thighs, a habit you had when you felt hurt or vulnerable.

"What if my fans could never accept our relationship? I've never dated outside my race and don´t get me wrong (Y/N)- I love our relationship...But I also feel like I´ve somehow turned my back towards like....my people...you know?", Justin finished, anxiety seeping through his body like a massive tidal wave. He had finally voiced his deepest worries and based off the look on your face, he knew that he had also hurt you.

All you could do was blink slowly, his words replaying themselves in your head. The painful pressure you felt in your chest was hard to ignore, the lump forming in your throat very hard to swallow. You were hurt, deeply.

"If...If you-", you could barely form a sentence. This wasn´t your first interracial relationship, you had gained enough experience to feel secure about yourself and your cultural background. But this was new.

"If you feel worried about turning your back on your people, then maybe you shouldn´t be with me..." you whispered, the words slowly killing you inside while you quickly got up in search for your shoes and purse. The need to just disappear growing by the second while you were frantically looking for your things.

"(Y/N), baby it wasn´t meant like that" Justin´s voice sounding higher than usual, he had shot up from the couch and was following you like a dog that had lost its owner. His eyes teared up while he desperately tried to get a hold of your arm, almost sobbing on the spot when you hissed and finally had put your shoes on, now looking for your damn purse.

I should have never said anything, you stupid idiot. Justin thought to himself. He wished that that he had never hushes a word. He couldn´t stand the thought of the two of you breaking up. You were the best thing that had happened to him. He had fallen for you the second his friend Emmy had introduced the two of you. Hell, the love you had blessed his life with was too good to be true, so good that his insecurities tried to sabotage it. Now, the consequences of his stupid actions were creeping up on him.

"Justin" you whispered in pain when he tried to hug you, the tears now having made their way down his soft cheeks. He was holding your hands, swallowing the pain while staring so sadly into your beautiful eyes, he was silently begging you to stay. All you could do was shake your head and mumble a soft "I don´t want you to feel bad for dating outside your race. Stay dating inside your group of people", and with that you quickly made your way out of his apartment, holding back the tears while you quickly made your way to your car and drove away, while your now ex-love was staring defeated into the space you were just standing in, slowly sinking to his knees as a soft sob left his mouth....

honestly…moving forward i don’t think i’ll be able to engage with riize the way i have been. when i say riize i mean the group as a whole with its promotions, management etc, not the other 6 boys themselves. like the institution ?? of riize ?? if that makes sense lol. i didn’t even bias seunghan and i actively kept up with the group during his hiatus, but at this point, i just can’t look at their content without feeling melancholic about it. maybe that’ll change in the future but i don’t know.. knowing that the members were supportive and encouraging of his re-integration and now seeing them walk through the airport so bleakly, that they weren’t there with him when the departure announcement dropped, is so upsetting like my heart genuinely hurts for all of them.

and i think the most cruel part is that seunghan’s decision to leave wasn’t even fully on his terms—sm neglected to protect him and could’ve prevented a lot of damage (granted there will still be a great deal of it regardless) up until this point. they cornered him when he was alone while his members were promoting overseas and left the six of them to deal with that news on a plane ride back where they’d be bombarded with cameras flashing in their faces. riize became one of my ults fairly quickly and i’ve been a fan of sungtaro since 2020 but if i stayed an active briize and interacted with their content normally i’d just be thinking “god they don’t wanna do this fucking shit” when it pertains to fan events (fan signs/calls, concerts, etc). and obviously so many idols put up a front with fan events even if they don’t want to because it’s their job but in riize’s case it’s just….how can they ever look at their fans the same way again knowing they forced their friend and fellow member out? that they can’t step out of line in any way and one misstep means they’re next on the chopping block. the whole thing just sets a dangerous precedent for the rest of the group and i feel so sad for all seven of them.

with the boycott, i can’t say i’m for or against it right now. he’s not coming back to the group…but also lack of sales sends a message (orbits seriously deserve their flowers for standing on their business boycotting bbc post chuu’s exit…like it was so powerful to see that a kpop boycott actually did something)...but it’s sm and unfortunately i’m pink blooded so obviously i know that company has a history of blacklisting people. and even though it’s a totally different case from riize, as a fan of hybe groups, seeing the backlash over the hybe boycott (which if it isn’t clear i 10000% support) has me so pessimistic. hybe hasn’t seen a single cent from me in the longest time but apparently that’s controversial but i digress. edit: i’m leaning towards boycott!

lastly i wish seunghan the utmost peaceful healing journey after all of this. while there’s good intentions i see no point in asking for him to come back to the group. he walked through a parade of wreaths protesting his very existence so how can you expect him to come back to the group, do promotions and fan calls and see those very fans that wished death upon him? even if a million ot7 truthers outnumbered the ugly antis, the people dancing to siren in front of his wreaths and laughing, seunghan shouldn’t be expected to face them ever again. like i don’t know guys this is a real human being who people wanted dead for doing nothing wrong and now his friends have to cater to and be a puppet for such people. i still love riize and all its members and i want to support them so bad but i think i can only do so from a far far distance. goodbye for now briizeville!

ℐׅ 핑크 ─ THE PINKETTES’ DISCOGRAPHY : A DEEP DIVE

THE PINKETTES debuted fresh off of the survival show THE PINK TAPE in 2018 with the mini album WELCOME 2 UR TAPE! which featured their iconic title track, BOOMBAYAH. it was no wonder the group was a success from the get-go, considering the line-up had already had its share of limelight pre-debut, its two most popular members apart of the renowned LEE family and KANAROT family. taking after their company girl group predecessors, they earned their first win at debut. the song went onto bag six music show wins, often praised for the art direction of it’s respective album, which would go on to be a recurring point of acclamation for the pinkettes.

in the earlier half of 2019, the quintet had their first comeback with the mini album PINK IS THE NEW BLACK, and while they achieved domestic success, they were met with an influx of international success, fueling the girl crush concept with the album and title track, BLACK DRESS, which went onto score seven music show wins. this same year, the girls came back with their single GET IT, which peaked at #1 on music charts and earned them their first PAK. however, with this commercial success came the critique of the girls’ image. the groups fashion choices were often criticized for being too provocative and they were being picked apart by netizens, especially male netizens, for their supposed debauchery and individual feminist agenda. they were regularly slut-shamed, commonly being accused of trying to be too “ sexually liberated ” for the general public.

PRETTY SAVAGE was the groups first release of 2020, a controversial single which was presumably a response to the criticism they received from netizens. during this era, they wore even more immodest stage outfits, purposefully challenging the discourse surrounding them. due to this, a boycott lead by male k-netz was formed against the pinkettes, with the intent of opposing their concept and comeback. though the backlash was considerably hefty, this didn’t stop them from bagging three music show wins—while substantially less wins than their previous releases, their streams and views outshined, racking in at 9M and 24M respectively in just 24 hours. although this would not be nearly the peak of their success, with their second comeback this year and first full album being released: HOT PINK. this album and title track went onto be their biggest comeback so far, selling 1.7M copies overall and earning them their second PAK. they also promoted the b-side CRAZY OVER YOU, which also charted fairly well alongside the other side tracks on the album. hot pink was one of those songs that was everywhere and so were they. the girls went on many variety shows during this era, often going viral for funny moments as well as a plethora of other things (ending fairies, performance skills, outfits, etc.) this was like the signature sound for the pinkettes franchise/brand or a theme song, at this point, with how iconic it became within the industry.

their first comeback after officially solidifying themselves as a powerhouse in their generation was in 2021 with their EP HAVE MY CAKE AND EAT IT 2! and while it performed well commercially, earning four wins, fans seemed to be disappointed with how different the title track BIRTHDAY sounded from the hit that was hot pink. they wanted that girl crush, sexier sound that they found from previous releases, but failed to find in birthday and their second comeback of this year with the mini album TOTAL SERENDIPITY. this also performed well, the title track RING THE ALARM scoring six wins and charting in the top 10, but this lead to BFF’s, casual fans, and netizen’s alike to raise the phrase “ LOSING THEIR SOUND ” + “ FORGETTING THEIR ROOTS, ” regarding the group. this era, however, would mark the first piece of music that was self-written, or at least the first self-written or self-produced work that was publicized.

the pinkettes kicked off 2022 with the hit single MIDNIGHT PROMISE, another work written and co-produced by LONDON. it strayed from the concept fans were so desperately waiting for to return but it struck gold nonetheless with its retro sound and styling. the song was so popular that it even attained a RAK. they continued to build up on that triumph with the mini album THE VILLAIN, a fan-favorite among BFF’s. they climbed their way back into the hearts of the general public and netizen’s with it’s nine win claiming title track ATTITUDE, peaking at #1 on charts.

in JUNE 2023, the group came back with the release of their second full album THE DEVIL WEARS PINK which in-turn, they saw the HOT PINK EFFECT return. in spite of the major criticism regarding the title track QUEENCARD’s cringey lyrics, they still went onto earn yet another PAK and sold close to 2M copies. all of the side tracks in the album saw spots in the top 20 in charts, especially its promotional b-side BYE BYE. though some say that bye bye exceeds queencard in musical quality by miles.

If this seems like a relatively subdued Pride Month, that's because the LGBTQ+ community is under more threat than usual this year.

For those in the LGBTQIA+ community, Pride month is a chance to be out, loud and proud.  But in the United States, there's been an uneasy quiet hanging over this June.  Big brands who once didn't think twice about cashing in on the pink dollar have scaled back support. The American offshoot of Target reduced the number of its stores carrying Pride-themed products this year after getting backlash in 2023. Nike, who became the subject of boycott calls last year over its marketing partnership with a transgender influencer, has also pulled back after offering Pride collections since 1999. [ ... ] The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says it's currently monitoring 523 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills across the country. Over 300 of these bills were introduced in the first three weeks of 2024 alone, and 149 are still advancing or have been passed into law.

Just want to interject that the introduction of a bill in a state legislature does not mean it will pass. 2 homophobic bills were introduced in socialist/hippie Vermont, 6 in Illinois which was the first state to abolish sodomy laws, and 9 in liberal New Jersey. Don't count on them passing. But the 39 in deep red Missouri adds to its reputation as currently having the most homophobic state government in the US.

The majority of these bills relate to educational measures, through school sports bans, school facilities bans that prevent transgender students from using communal rest rooms, or curriculum censorship around in-school discussions of the queer community.  Increasing anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric has also seen bills introduced that would forcibly out teachers and staff.  [ ... ]

Notably, Dr Ellis points to billionaire Elon Musk's October 2022 takeover of X — formerly Twitter — which saw the mention of grooming slurs against the LGBTQIA+ community jump by 119 per cent, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate.  The social media sphere also saw anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment being taken up by foreign actors ahead of US election campaigns to sow division, according to Meta's head of Cybersecurity Policy, Nathaniel Gleicher.

Perhaps the most bizarre group in American politics is the Log Cabin Republicans.

Seriously, people in the LGBTQ+ community who support Republicans, Trump, and MAGA are in deep need of therapy. Imagine a hypothetical group like "Gazans for Netanyahu" to get some idea of how self-hating the Log Cabin Republicans are. Republicans are largely under the control of extremist Christian fundamentalists who would pass the most repressive homophobic laws they could get away with.
