Idea Generation and Initial Research
Going into this project I was set on the general themes and ideas as I’ve been wanting to work on a project that would incorporate my passion for live music and gig photography. I sat down and threw a few ideas around to specify this into a brief. I originally wanted to do a more polished magazine which I would brand but decided what I wanted to achieve for that idea wouldn’t be possible within the time frame. I decided a shorter format and a more specific topic would help the project be achievable. I settled on a project that focused on venues, later deciding to completely focus on Bournemouth venues as getting in contact would be easier and aid the feasability of the project.
To guide myself when designing the zine I sorted through my magazine collection and picked out things I liked. I also researched into a couple other zines and reminded myself of some basic layout principles by reading through pages in ‘New Page Design - Layout and Editorial Design’ published by Hoaki.
I began the project by sending out messages and emails to a number of venues and a couple bands. I got a surprising number of responses and managed to secure interviews with most of the venues I sent messages to. I wanted to conduct these interviews so I would be working with real content that I was passionate about when designing the zine, and also to further understand the places I was documenting to aid my design process.

Hyperfixations 002
I love Autumn. I love October. I love when those leaves begin to fall and that crisp autumn air starts to breeze in through the window and it gets me all excited to put my fluffy pjs on, drink pumpkin spice lattes and go pumpkin picking. lol nevermind it is literally still 22 degrees outside !!!
I've zipped around London, Southampton and [some more of] Bournemouth over the last couple of weeks which means I've got to see lots of different art. Starting off with Arts By The Sea festival; the yearly free festival that takes place across the lower gardens and the beach usually showcasing a ton of work.
Arts By The Sea (Bournemouth)
Portal by Lucid Creates was to be honest, the only piece of work in the entire show worthy of talking about because the rest of the show was once again mostly aimed towards children and some of it was just,,,, well whelming. I saw lots of pieces of work dotted around the garden which had just been abandoned for half the day, a bunch of staff members sat on benches doing nothing and a LOT of negative reviews of the show from our beloved local tax payers. They really hated Portal because it's 'such a waste of us taxpayers money. Boring. Unimaginative. Crass' Bare in mind these pieces of art are commissioned by the artists themselves as well as Arts Council England.
Also there was a whole statement with this entire piece being torn to the ground because it was in a certain part of the beach which displayed the area were two people had died a few months ago. Their parents decided they wanted it down, but the council decided not to since it would already take two days to take the whole thing down so they may as well keep it up. Their parents failed to mention the entire Air Show Festival taking place on the same part of the beach last month by the way.
A is for Artist by Ayo Akingbade (Southampton)
4 minutes and 56 seconds running time filmed on 16mm.
The film itself features a young woman assembling images from her fathers archive after a tragedy which inspires her on her pursuit to become an artist. The short film itself features a selection of images placed together which reference her interest in portraiture and printmaking.
A short clip from the film can be viewed here.
I am gutted I didn't have enough time to be able to see the other accompanying films for the exhibition space, but me and my boyfriend had to shortly after get to the other side of Southampton. But the rest of the gallery space included 'The First' which is filmed outside the very first Guinness brewery outside of the UK, which was on the outskirts of Lagos. It was finished in 1962 after Nigeria's independence from Britain and discusses labour and industrialisation colliding. On the other hand, Faluyi explores their personal relationship with Nigeria and features shots and panoramic images of hills and forests.
Evelyn Hofer @ The Photographers Gallery London
'The most famous unknown photographer in America' is the statement given to German-American Evelyn Hofer. The exhibition in London was her first ever solo UK show and it was a hoot to view. Confusing at times since there were SO many layers to explore and so many things to see, but I really felt like I got to see how her mind worked by her photography alone.
Hofer chooses to shoot between both colour and black & white, she says for her it really depends on the subject and what she thinks is fitting for it. Her subject could be anything. People, places, buildings, anything. It feels like a fancy form of scrapbooking, I love it. It reminds me of those old Stephen Shore books where he would go along the States photographing petrol stations, motels and things he ate while he was travelling state to state. Got to be one of my favourite genres of photography.
Left: Springtime, Washington 1965. Right: Queensboro Bridge, New York, 1964.
Films
I said to my bf this month, it's October and I've barely seen any of those classic horror movies so I'm trying to swiftly make my way through as much classic horror content as possible, but it was very difficult for me because there is just so much. I finally after over 23 years managed to watch The Shining, however I was in such a food coma and was so exhausted because I once again had Covid that I managed to sleep through the first 20 minutes of the film, but not to be controversial here I don't feel like I missed much of the film anyway. I really wanted to like the film, but knowing of Shelley Duvall's treatment on that set I can't bring myself to do it. I watched HAUSU (1977) which has to be one of the most camp psychological horrors I've ever seen. I am obsessed with the class trip being cancelled and the girls managing to convince their teacher into coming to a haunted house except by the time he gets there, he's been turned into a pile of bananas and all of the girls have been eaten by Gorgeous, their bestie.
I watched Twilight again and I'm also hoping to get through all the movies at the end of the month, but who knows. I am always busy. Of course, I also saw the 4k edition of Stop Making Sense and I am simply one step away from becoming a Talking Heads stan account I fear.
Speaking of Talking Heads, I cannot stop listening to their music either, I'm pretty sure they're beginning to overtake my most listened to genre, 'slay the boots mama vroom vroom'; but essentially their music is just a more theatrical version of slay the boots anyway???
And of course, Tom Tom Club's Genius Of Love. I had no idea they had any affiliation with Talking Heads, but it somehow makes sense that they do. The song of course is a classic, the amount I've videos I've scrolled past on TikTok where they play the low quality beat is astounding, when I saw it in the cinema I genuinely thought they were simply doing a cover. I tried to find a link to it on YouTube, but it doesn't seem to exist so here's this instead.
youtube
Lastly, I seem to be hyperfixating on food, I don't really think that's something you can do, but going out, trying new meals, cooking whatever is left in the fridge and making it into one of the best creamy pastas you've ever had, that kind of thing.
I was feeling too sick to cook the other day and so I ordered some takeout from the Thai restaurant my bf works at. I ordered kimchi fried rice, it was SO GOOD. I didn't take a picture of it because I was sicky, but believe me when I say it was really good thanks. I had a seafood linguine earlier on in the week too, though I did have to sit there Googling how to remove mussels out of the seashell without looking too awkward in such a public space. I think it worked, nobody gave me dirty looks.
Creamy pasta with everything I had left over. Spring onions, tomato, mushrooms, tofu, half a bag of spinach. There were some other things, but I can't remember. Having a veggie breakfast from my favourite coffee shop and trying hash browns from an air fryer for the first time was an experience, and also LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE COOKIES in the picture on the bottom left. I liked the look of them, but I am old now so that is too much sugar for me to have in one sitting now. Maybe one day.

Pre-Wedding | Jessica+Gavin - Coy Pond, Bournemouth
Some of us are super confident and some of us are not. Some of us love having our photo taken and some of us do not.
That's the reason why I love a good pre-wedding shoot. Regardless of which one of these applies to you, you will always feel better for having had a pre-wedding shoot come your big day.
I met Jessica very briefly at a wedding I did in March this year, she was one of the guests and a friend of the bride, Clare. And now proof that word-of-mouth exists and pays off. We met up earlier this summer at the Hilton Hotel in Bournemouth, had a lovely cuppa and a chat about their plans (and took in the view of the Level 8 Sky Bar). Glorious.
It was pretty obvious from the first meeting that this was going to be a good one. For one, I'm ticking off another of my wish list venues. Secondly, I'll get to have a couple of cheeky cocktails afterwards with them in the fabulous Sky Bar.
Like a lot of couples, they weren't initially sure if they wanted to have a pre-wedding shoot, but after dropping a little hint in a later message, Jess decided they would have one. Go on girl. Like I've said earlier, not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera, so this is why it's a good idea to take your photographer up on the offer of having a pre-wedding shoot. You won't regret it, I promise. You'll get to have a nice little morning or afternoon out somewhere, you'll get extra photos to look through on your anniversary, and you'll definitely feel much more relaxed on your big day. Trust me!!
Just don't go out the night before your pre-wedding shoot like a certain someone did (I'll mention no names, Gavin. Haha!)
So we met mid-November at Coy Pond, near Westbourne. It's a lovely quiet spot in the Upper Gardens that run the length of Bournemouth down to the sea. No one really comes up this way, so if you're not much of an extrovert or into public displays of affection, it's a great little spot for you. Plus, there's a beautiful pond with ducks to feed (if you want) and lots of trees, which at that time of year have all got there autumnal shades going on.
As always, I like to keep it pretty simple and relaxed. We went for a walk up and down the gardens, did a little posing practice - because I do love a good wall shot on your big day - and I want you to be ready for the few posed shots we will do. The rest of the time is me snapping away getting some great shots of you, ready for me to put my cinematic edit spin on them. Like this little lot below.
Massive props to Gavin for doing this shoot, he wasn't feeling it, but the boy done good.
Until next time

Spaces Between roundabout experiments
I thought about how could I play with the idea. Of a journey of mine I take which includes passing and using roundabouts. Focussing on the space between but also the route. So I set Google maps to take me a route back to bath where I live. Showing my journey, all the roundabouts I use whilst travelling. I screen grabbed all the roundabouts on my journey.
Starting from Bournemouth all the way to Bath. Showing all 16 different roundabouts small and large. Which I am going to experiment with all linked together.
Here is the complete experiment showing all of the roundabouts linked together, by the exit and entrance into each roundabout I take on my journey. Showing the different spaces between big and small on each roundabout. I had to slightly tweak where I stuck some of the roundabouts so that they would all fit on the page and show this journey how I wanted it to look. It would be really cool if I made all the roundabouts link in a circle creating a roundabout of roundabouts which I may experiment with in the future. My next steps I feel from this experiment would be to take away the rest of the image just leaving the roads, roundabout and different exit as I feel like the box images look a little weird and take your eye away from the route I have shown within this experiment.
This experiment I took the roundabout spaces from my journey which I had mapped out above. Focussing on the actual space within the roundabout. The unknown no mans land area which you don't notice do to that fact you are driving around it and keeping your eye on the traffic around you and what junction your going to take. But I am fascinated with this weird piece of land within so I wanted to screen grab and look at the variety of different roundabouts within my journey. The majority of them are covered in grass with a small amount of trees. I also realised from this viewpoint that a lot of them are more oval shaped rather than an even looking circle which I find weird.
I also started to draw out some sketches of roundabouts in my illustrative style. So I could see how they may look when I start to develop my chosen idea which will incorporate illustration in some sort of way. I am thinking a collage based idea. Using photography and illustration combined. By drawing these I looked at the birds eye view screen grabbed images I took from my journey experiment.
From the pin up crit, I feel like I need to focus more on the actual land itself within the roundabout rather than the road system which a roundabout is useful to. As the project is called space between. Which I am going to do. My next steps are further experiments and development by pushing the two methods together which I want to use within my final outcome. Photography and illustration. I have a couple experimental ideas I want to play with before next week. The first being going to do another roundabout visit and photograph again like I have before what I notice which lies within the space. Like the foliage the litter anything I see. Which I then want draw, also cut out images I took. Creating a collage with them I a circular shape showing the contents of the roundabout.
My second experimental idea is to compare roundabout centres what I find what grows etc. Giving them different ratings in a top trump sort of style roundabout ratings. Using photography and illustration as well. I then out of these two ideas choose the most successful and then develop and see where the development and experiments take me.

COUPLE NAMES: Looby & Ryan Bear
WEDDING DATE: 11th November 2018
WEDDING LOCATION: The Green Cornwall:
HOW AND WHERE DID YOU MEET: We met through my sister, we were both out with her and met that night, Ryan approached me first as we had a brief conversation before online. I must add that we met in the dingiest club in Bournemouth, this is what we bonded over!
WEDDING THEME / STYLE DESCRIPTION:
Down to earth, individual
DESCRIPTION OF THE WEDDING DAY:
We decided to elope and planned it a year before. I have no idea how we kept it secret for so long! The day was perfect, we woke up together and went into the local town to get my hair and make up done. This is also when we sent out our announcement cards so that people would find out the next day, leaving the evening totally stress free. The venue we chose was absolutely perfect, very pretty. We took our two pugs and stayed in a little cottage on the grounds.
After having my hair and makeup done by some lovely ladies we headed back and got ready together, no stress! We then walked to the barn, where we were married, together. The ceremony was lovely, so intimate and personal. We had our lovely photographer and a member of staff from The Green as our witnesses.
Following the ceremony we had some photos taken by Mark, he made us feel so comfortable! We chose to marry quite late in the day and so there wasn’t much daylight but we still got some incredible photographs.
We then went back to our cottage, changed out of our wedding clothes and soon after a chef came over to cook us a three course meal. He was absolutely fantastic and made us the best food we’ve ever tasted!
After the chef left we just chilled out, played some battleships and watched Netflix.
All in all it was a perfect day and night.

Hi back again👋🏾,
I got a couple of landscape photographs to share. These were taken at Bournemouth beach, which is situated in southern England. When you’re on the coast, you’re near the beginning of Europe; with only the sea acting as a boundary between the two. It’s weird to think of it from that angle but that’s basically what it is.

Photos from the walk around Bournemouth kickstarting the intersections project. I don't feel these really helped but it was nice to get out and do some photography, I think a couple of these are quite successful images, in particular the church building reflection.

BA (Hons) Photographic Arts
Major Project 1
Research Report
Name
Mary Scott E Journal - maryscott-photography.tumblr.com
Major Project Title
(Or working title - how and why did this title develop?)
I have not yet got a finalised title for this project, however I plan for it to involve the date, day and/or location of my images, as this will be important to give some more insight into what they are and where they were made. The title may also include the words sea and cyanotype in some way, due to the fact that without this information, people often mistake my work for drawings or paintings.
I am currently playing with the idea of captioning each individual image with even further detail, such as the date and time that each specific print was made. So for example, my project may be called something similar to “Sea Cyanotypes - November 2018 - March 2019.” And each caption may be something like “04.12.18 - 14:22.” These idea’s are still far from final, but I am aware that the title of my project is extremely important, so that the technicalities and process of the project are noticed by my audience.
Research Methods
(What methods have you used during this phase of the project and how have they helped you develop your ideas and inform your major project proposal?)
My photographic practice has almost consistently used the cyanotype process now for 2 years, so with this as a starting point I initially began to experiment with the technique further than I have done previously. I bought my own chemicals to use at home, to practice the technique using sunlight instead of the UV light machine at uni. From doing this at home using plants, I realise I could try using water, to wash off parts of the chemical, and expose the rest. I then started researching artists who have done similar things; people such as Susan Derges and Meghann Ripenhoff, and realised this technique could make a really interesting large scale project.
My work has also been centred around the sea since I can remember, growing up in Bournemouth and using the sea as my place of comfort since I was young. In recent years the sea has shown me a darker side, taking a member of my family, and proving just how powerful it can be. This strong relationship I have now developed with it, makes me want to push my limits, and make a project that sees me interacting both physically and mentally with the water. It then seemed obvious to take my cyanotype water experiments and try them out using the sea. This worked so well, that I plan to keep perfecting this technique for my final major project, until I have a series of slightly abstract, large scale cyanotypes.
Pilot Project
(What have you achieved through the development of your pilot project/s? What have you learned from the process? Identify the main concepts that might direct or drive your major project.)
From practicing this technique, I have undoubtably come across some problems that I’ve had to learn from and overcome. The main one being that I need bright, direct sunlight, and I have been making this work in the hight of the British winter, where sunlight isn’t an everyday occurrence. I also have the struggle of needing to get to the seaside, from London, whenever the possibility of the sun appears. This therefore isn’t reliable or cost affective, and means that a lot of my project will need to be made in a couple of months time, however, it has still been possible to make quite a few prints, despite the weather.
Another hurdle I have overcome is the fragility of the technique; with the strength of the sea against delicate paper, I have experienced some rips and tears in my work. However, upon feedback, I am okay with this to continue, as I’m letting nature dictate how my prints come out, and imperfections caused my the sea, sand, wind or any other surroundings will eventually add to, and complete my project.
I am glad to have identified these problems early, as I now know what to do to overcome them, and I feel prepared for my major project, and the obstacles it may throw my way.
Audience and Context
(Has a consideration of Context and Audience made you think about your project in a particular way? Have you been aware of the histories, conventions and audience expectations of particular contexts? Have you considered different contexts and how have you responded to them?)
I’ve had struggles with this project in terms of audience, and audience reaction, as a lot of people can’t recognise my abstract cyanotypes as being photography, or even cyanotypes. I constantly get asked if they’re drawings, paintings or spray painted, and even if the cyanotype process has been recognised, the fact that it’s an image of the sea, is almost never apparent to an audience.
These audience reactions are why I have decided it’s necessary to have a clear title to my project, and possibly a description, or video of the process alongside, to make it clear exactly how I’ve made it.
Production and Presentation
(Discuss the production methods you have been exploring through your pilot project. What effects do these different approaches/ visual strategies have on the work? What choices have you made in the refinement of your visual approach and why? Is the approach you have chosen effective in communicating your ideas to the identified audience?)
The main visual method I want to keep consistent in this project is the composition of the way in which the water hits the paper. The only other artist I’ve found that makes work similar to my project is Meghann Ripenhoff, and she allows the water to hit the paper to create a splash. To keep my visuals different from hers, but also in line with the type of seascape photography I usually make, I want to create a linear wave across the centre of the page on each print, and hopefully have it displayed in a line, joined up, at the exhibition.
Another visual I am still experimenting with is the material in which I am printing on. At the moment I am using paper, and experimenting with different qualities and textures. However, at the very beginning of the process, I was adamant that I want to print onto fabric and have more of an instillation piece, with large pieces of fabric the viewer could touch and walk through. If I have time, I will still experiment with this idea, or at very least, the idea of fabric hanging on the wall.
Visual References / Bibliography
(List the key visual and critical references you have explored during the research process. Discuss how useful these references were for the project and what you learned from them).
As mentioned, my main reference for this project is cyanotype artist Maghann Ripenhoff. As she uses water and the sea to create cyanotypes. I have tried not to reference her too often when making my work, as I am conscious of my project being too similar to hers, however her technical process has been a big part of my research.
Another artist in which I constantly refer to in my photography, when photographing the sea in particular, is Hiroshi Sugimoto and his famous project ‘seascapes’. I have always attempted to capture the horizon with the simplicity that he does, and in this project I am almost trying to mimic that, but in an abstract manner, making him a less obvious reference.
I always try to read to influence my work, reading poems about home, the sea and nostalgia, as well as writing my own. This helps me feel a connection to the places I capture, and understand other peoples connections to these places too.

Autumn and Winter Mini Portrait Shoots
I was born in the spring so I have a natural affinity with that time of year, it certainly can be magical. Deep down though, I just love the autumn and winter seasons. I love the clothes, being able to get wrapped up in a big woolen jumper, scarves and gloves, drinking too much hot chocolate, and heading outside with my camera.
The light at this time of year can be just incredible, shorter days and the sun sitting lower in the sky can create some stunning effects without having to use Photoshop. These seasons also give me the time to combine my love of being outdoors with my other rather obvious passion.
The festive season isn't too far away, and so what better excuse to have some stunning (and fun!) photos of you and your loved ones done. Whether it's just for you, or to give as a gift to your mum, dad, granny or grandad, you can't beat an outdoor photo shoot.
So I'm running an autumn/winter special for a mini portrait session - all for just £50!
You'll get...
A fun and relaxed 45 minute outdoor shoot in Bournemouth
All of your edited photos to view, share and download on your own private online gallery - and if you really love them, you can order extra prints
T&C's apply:
All shoots must be paid in full in order to secure your session
Your portrait session will take place within Bournemouth (Coy Pond, Hengistbury Head, Moors Valley Country Park or Bournemouth Beach) so you must be able to provide your own transport to the location
Offer is only valid on shoots that are booked and take place on or before 1st March 2018
In the case of adverse weather, dates may be rearranged (subject to availability)
Portrait sessions may be gifted, but all T&C's still apply
So what are you waiting for...?
Bring a friend, a loved one, the whole family and if you have one, bring your dog too.

PHOT202: Claire Gillo -The Paper Project.
ABOUT
“I am a photographer and writer based in the South West of the UK. I live in a sleepy village by the sea with my two young children, husband and cat. After graduating from The Bournemouth Arts Institute with a first class degree in Photography, I worked for a number of years in the publishing industry in various roles including technique editor for the prestigious magazine Digital Camera. My work has also been published in NPhoto, Amateur Photographer, PhotoPlus and Digital Photographer amongst many others.I love anything and everything to do with photography! From creating magazine articles to photographing ballerinas on the beach and new born babies (not at the same time may I add) I have a wealth of experience and expertise in many genres. I mainly shoot digital however I also love to dust the old Hasselblad off once in a while.“
The Paper Project is what Gillo stated as “A study of paper, light and dark“ which is more experimentation with the use of a scanner light - it made me think about the lighting that glows for a couple seconds and then produces the stark contrast of colour on black or white, it can change the whole aura that the image shows, leaving it completely up to the photographer to play with.
One thing I noticed the most about this shoot is the use of shadowing that allows the image to create depth and substance within an object. Each image shows a different effect of shadowing that is attainable by changing your paper/object where the light is harder to hit.
I love how Claire has used something as simple as a piece of paper to show off lighting techniques, showing how easy it is to achieve the look. As I learn about the use of scanography I have found that positioning is a huge part that contributes to the end product - this is something to think about in the making of my own art - explore every angle and leave no stone un-turned.

Lose Body Fat For Your Big Day - Sydney Wedding Video 3 Things To Do
Planning a wedding event can be very demanding. It harms the body with all the walking and taking a trip, this is bad for your mind with decision-making and choice, and it likewise harms your pocket when you have a limited budget and you want that perfect, which costs twice as ready spending plan. One of them is to discover the ideal wedding photographer. Of course, you do not desire to depend on this really essential day in his life with anybody.
Necessary Devices For The Wedding Event Photographer
Normally there are a couple of different studios that do videos of weddings, Sydney Wedding Videographer so you can examine out more than one. In reality, this is a good way to go. Do not evaluate them only on the cost, you ought to check the video quality, too. You can generally get an excellent feel for how expert the San Diego Wedding Videographer is by inspecting out the studio. If it is a nice setup and not just a back space someplace, then you most likely have an excellent company on your hands. While many fantastic videos come out of basement studios, there should a minimum of be an effort at professionalism.
Assistance! How Do I Select A Wedding Photographer?
If you are just a novice in the field of photography, the very first thing that you ought to do is take training in some photography school or under some established professional photographer. Unless you understand the broad spectrum well, how will you concentrate on the Cheap Wedding Photographer section independently?
The most visible issue with using one cam to movie a wedding event is the 'Zoom Effect'. The human eye is not efficient in zooming therefore when we enjoy a video where the cameraman is constantly focusing and out and panning around the room it can feel rather sickening. Utilizing 2 cameras negates this concern as you can change in between cameras.
