makes me want to die a little bit how getting cosmetic surgery/filler/botox is constantly getting pushed as some act of female empowerment
#every time a woman is like yeah I'm not doing that i don't like it#it's always 'but let's not shame women who do! it's their choice! it's the best decision i ever made! i did it for my confidence!'#people will go harder to defend a woman's right to botox than to like. abortion or equal pay#talking

Bebe Neuwirth as Avis DeVoto in episode 2x07 of Julia, "Shrimp and Grits"
#bebe neuwirth#avis devoto#julia hbo#julia#edit:bebeneuwirth#edit:julia#edit:avisdevoto#*#`#i dearly love looking at this beautiful woman's face#especially as i take breaks from reading about the ubiquity of postfeminist approaches to successful ageing in celebrity culture#as something to be 'managed' so that the body must be constantly surveilled for fear of deviating from#narrow conceptions of normative feminine beauty defined by youthfulness#raise a glass to every woman in the entertainment industry not dyeing her hair‚ going under the knife‚ or being injected with botox#and pour one out for every woman in the entertainment industry who is in an effort to make the most out of an impossible situation that#would limit her financial mobility and career opportunities if she didn't fall into line!#hear‚ hear#i will say though that i think as many women who can afford not to undergo cosmetic surgery as a 'solution' to aging shouldn't#because those who have prestigious enough careers (think meryl streep) can continue to land rolls anyway#and i think more women could leverage their success without resorting to such means#rant over i guess

I can't believe girls my age and younger are getting
"preventative botox"
I just hope I get the chance to grow old with my partner without too much pain,
embrace my gray hair I'll inevitably grow
and maybe someday even hold my grandchildren with wrinkly loving hands.
We shouldn't be scared of looking our age🩷
Growing older
is a privilege

everyone on tiktok is using that old age filter and being like NOOOOOO I LOOK HORRIBLE and the filter makes them like middle aged at best. i tried it and i looked exactly like my grandma and it made me cry. i haven’t seen her face in 9 years but someday i’ll look in the mirror and it’ll be right there.
#and there are women saying it makes them feel better abt getting Botox or work done like! if I did that I wouldn’t look like my grandma#i hope I get to old age! and see my ancestors in my face!

had my two week review at work and they said I'm doing amazing at my job but I need to be "more glamorous" and need to "wear more makeup" so yes the job search has once again begun
#keep in mind i was literally wearing a full face while she said it too#i really don't want to stereotype but the fact that all the women at my job have filler and botox shouldve let me know what they wanted#thing is tho like??? they hired me??? they knew what i looked like for my two interviews#its just frustrating because like. i KNOW they arent telling the men i work with to be more 'glamorous'#sigh#back to the job market i suppose#bones.txt

One of the things about hitting a certain age, and all you women-identified people will have this happen, is watching female celebrities your own age hit the specific crossroad where a choice has to be made. Do we age gracefully, or do we make ourselves look like a wax figure at Madame Tussauds? You get to see people your own age or slightly older than you becoming living examples of the uncanny valley, all the while you continue to age like a normal human person. Like yeah, there has and will always be women in hollywood who get work done that makes them look weird. But there's something specific about seeing people who are your contemporaries start to do it.
I am of course, mourning whatever the fuck Kristen Bell has done to her face.
Not the worst example of face-tinkering, but noticeable to the point where I literally saw her in a clip last month with some other celebrity and did not recognise her. I have been watching her in things since we were both in our early 20's. It's safe to say I am very familiar with her face. And I am an adult woman in my early 40's. I know what women in their 40's look like. it isn't that I am reacting badly to her aging. It's the fact that she is starting to look like every other woman who has had similar work done. Like they all become vaguely related, one big horrifying family that can't furrow their eyebrows.
I don't want to judge her for it. I know I cannot possibly comprehend the pressure she is under to do this. But I guess I am mourning for her? It feels like a loss to me. Yeah it's just another hollywood actress who has had work done, but it feels like a commentary on how I'm going to age. And the value of faces like mine, and how hard it is to see them represented. It feels like being erased. When I actually fucking adore every line and mark. I've earned them. I will continue to fucking earn them.
And so I salivate over seeing actresses like Judy Davis, who looks every year of her 69 years. (and who unsurprisingly, is not in a whole lot of stuff nowadays). and Hannah Waddingham, who I desperately hope continues not to do weird shit to her face. And yet i wouldn't blame her if she eventually does crack and joins the rest of them. Because it's brutal out there.
#I don't even know how to tag this#hollywood#hollywood actresses#hollywood facelift#botox treatment#fuck you botox you literally make people whose job it is to have emotions on their faces super weird to watch#I feel like every time there's people online saying something about how weird an actress has started to look#people jump in and call this discussion misogynistic#but literally I am sick of this 'emperor has no clothes' bullshit#where we are supposed to spend hours staring at these women on screens#and not have some kind of reaction

always disheartening to see so many women who would call themselves feminists still willing to go to the mat for plastic surgery. "it's their bodies and their money! don't shame them!" okay....so you don't want to interrogate at all why an increasing number of women are getting elective surgery to live up to inherently racist, ageist, and misogynistic beauty standards?
#brains really do go brrr the second you want to examine how a myriad of external factors influence 'individual' choices#i understand where the defensiveness is coming from to an extent#because it's really only women who get shamed or called botched when plenty of men also get botox + plastic surgery#but it's possible to call out double standards without defending elective plastic surgery#no one needs lip fillers! no one needs cheek fillers! no one needs an eyebrow lift!#a shout into the void

in my old neighborhood, there were. hang on. i'm pulling up maps rn to count. 17 of those hair salons in a 4-block radius
#this is why i'm sad like ya technically i could go outside more.#to look at hair salons and the women with much botox exiting them.#their beautiful dry custard-colored hair leaving me in the perfumed dust.#tbf my apartment complex is actually nice to walk around bc it has the woods around back and lots of big old trees everywhere#it does feel like i'm a hamster in a cage but like my owner made a pretty ok cage for me#they were like ima give her some lil trees.. some carefully arranged river rocks

It actually baffles me how people are bashing the women on all the reality tv shows for being unnatural. We literally live in a world where women are constantly being bashed for aging or gaining weight and then they wonder why things like Botox, fillers, and ozempic are trending.
Society is putting so much pressure on women to look and be perfect, and then when they spend thousands of dollars to maintain a youthful and thin look, they are still criticized. No matter what women do, it is never enough.
Instead of judging the women who are pandering to the patriarchy, we should be asking ourselves why they feel so pressured to change their natural features in the first place.
The conventional "beauty" ideal is constantly changing in forms of "trends", and only for women.
It is society that is the problem, it is patriarchy that is the problem. women are victims to the patriarchal system and we need to stop bashing them for falling victim to such a toxic system.

last night i was so sick of my skin i was like thats IT im DONE im going to the drugstore and buying what my famously clear skinned mother used in the 90s. woke up this morning to find out it made me break out 🤡
#my mother has had perfect skin her entire life and me/my brother/my dad's side have been suffering for years#she was such a ponds girl though like i think a lot of south asian women were ponds girls cause of like. the powder.#the purple magic scented powder smell is burned in my brain what a universal product for my family in india. i still have some at home#i literally remember being like why are you guys using the same stuff on your face as you do for the carrom board#but my mom used exclusively ponds products and ALL in the wrong way. she was moisturizing with cold cream. still had perfect skin#but i went and bought the dry skin cream in the blue tub yesterday and either im just recovering from four straight days of wearing makeup#or they changed the formula and it made me break out 😭#im hoping its the former cause that shit is expensive nowadays. like fifteen bucks.#yesterday my mother (55 yrs old looks 40) was like should i get botox and i was like. do you know. do you fucking know how lucky you are.#she pointed to a single wrinkle on her forehead like you're in your 50S.................

Reading old magazines really puts into perspective the way expected beauty maintenance for women has been slowly amping up over the past 30 years
#in 90s magazines it was like#try to give yourself a facial once a month!#now it’s like…why you should be thinking about Botox at 19#obviously it’s because women have more access their own money than ever#but it wild that now thing like eyelash extensions and fillers are average things for average people
