How do you know if you’re a top or bottom if you’re femme

hey there! honestly, bedroom dynamics don’t really have anything to do with being femme in the slightest. sure, people tend to associate femmes with bottoming and/or being in a submissive role, but it really comes down to personal preference. 

since this is a semi-sensitive topic (and there are no doubt minors following this blog), I’m going to slap an 18+ warning and a readmore on here.

to put it in a clearer perspective, I’ll try to break down the terminology for you (bear in mind, there’s not exactly a consensus for how interchangeable ‘switch’ and ‘vers’ are):

position preferences:

top - physically on top of someone

bottom - physically underneath someone

vers - both and/or either of the previous options, with or without a lean/tilt towards one or the other

dynamic preferences:

dom(me) - dominant; “wears the pants” in the bedroom so to speak 

sub - submissive; likes being dominated rather than taking control and/or initiating physical intimacy 

switch - both dominant and submissive tendencies; and/or either of the previous options, with or without a lean/tilt towards one or the other

a lot of people conflate ‘bottom’ with ‘sub’ and ‘top’ with ‘dom(me)’, which makes sense since those are the most common combinations of the above labels, but bear in mind there are also power bottoms (dominant “bossy” bottoms) and service tops (submissive tops who “follow orders”).

fun fact: while dynamic preferences are pretty universal when it comes to identity and k!nk/BDSM, position preferences are generally a k!nky queer thing, so to speak. 

again, absolutely no other facet of your identity determines which of these labels fit you, if any do at all. there are plenty of asexual, sex-neutral, and/or sex-repulsed femmes, to which none of the labels above apply. the only way to figure out what your sexual preferences are is to ask yourself, and if you don’t know the answer, it’s okay to experiment. it’s also okay if you change your mind about the labels you think apply to you, just go with the flow and identify with whatever fits best at the time.
