In July 2023, Emmanuel Macron reshuffled Elisabeth Borne's government. Séjourné contemplated the new team: "Look at these losers, it makes you feel less inadequate!" He was self-conscious about never having been a minister. On October 7, 2023, Israel was the victim of a Hamas terrorist attack. That same day, the Renaissance party was organizing its European campus in Bordeaux. The agenda needed urgent changes. Emmanuel Macron called. He related his exchange with Benjamin Netanyahu. "I just had Bibi, it's terrible. The numbers are enormous, the images are horrific. It's an act of terrorism. Don't do like Colonna who advised Israel to avoid retaliation," the President insisted. In a tweet, Catherine Colonna, Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed her concern but added: "Violence is a dead end." "She's finished," commented Séjourné after his exchange with the President, with the Quai d'Orsay in his sights.

Always discreet. Just before Christmas 2023, he gathered his close party collaborators. He thought he would be heading the list for the European elections on June 9, he anticipated the worst and didn't want to be the gravedigger of Macronism. He was saved by the bell: Gabriel Attal became Prime Minister. If the two men were once in a civil partnership, they no longer are. After a period of silence, they resumed contact. A friend at Matignon, a protector at the Élysée, things were looking good. Well, almost. Stéphane Séjourné feared that Emmanuel Macron would keep him in his lane and project him to the Ministry of Relations with Parliament, a position the head of state had already offered him. It was the Quai or nothing. The weekend before Gabriel Attal's appointment, he prepared, calling Hubert Védrine, Dominique de Villepin, Jean-Yves Le Drian. All had held the coveted position. On Wednesday, January 11, he wasn't sure of anything. There was talk of Amélie de Montchalin for Foreign Affairs. He had to listen to Alexis Kohler list the ministers to be reassured. Very quickly, Emmanuel Macron called him, didn't dwell on the announcement and got to the essential: "You handle the disappointed ones. And you deal with the left wing that's not swallowing Dati's nomination. I'll readjust after the European elections." The readjustment was called dissolution. When did Stéphane Séjourné learn that the operation would happen? According to our information, Séjourné learned that the dissolution option had been chosen about a week before its announcement. He said nothing. In politics, Stéphane has always been one step ahead of Gabriel. In 2017, Séjourné successfully advocated for Attal — who wasn't a historical member of the movement — to get a safe constituency. When the latter became Minister of Education and then Prime Minister, his former partner advised him. For a time, the Attal-Séjourné equation also complicated the replacement of the commissioner candidate at the head of the party. Emmanuel Macron can be brutal with his early supporters. In the name of a companionship that doesn't bother with ceremony. He addressed reproaches to Séjourné about the party's organization, about Attal's hegemonic aims, about the absolute necessity to avoid confrontation. He would be heard, with Elisabeth Borne agreeing to withdraw her candidacy. The bad smell dissipated. If all goes well on November 12, Stéphane Séjourné will be European Commissioner until 2029. Emmanuel Macron will have left the Élysée two years earlier. Could it be that Séjourné is preparing a European future for his ex-boss...

So... Attal and Sejourne seemed to be in a close relationship, outside of professional commitment as Sejourne advised Attal during his tenure as the Minister of National Education. Sejourne was also 'saved by the bell' of...Attal nomination, as he expressed his desire to acquire the Quai.

Their close relationship extended beyond Attal government, as Attal-Sejourne, now becoming 'an equation' to be recognised with, as Attal will take over the position of SG, essentially succeeding the position of his former partner...

The Montech water slope

At around the same time as the "Inclined Plane" of Saint-Louis-Arzviller, other types of boat lifts were being engineered in other places. One of these was the Montech water slope, situated in Southern France on the Canal Parallel to the Garonne (Canal Latéral à la Garonne), the canal from Toulouse to Bordeaux which most people would probably refer to as the Canal du Midi - a better-known term though strictly speaking, the Canal du Midi is only the section from Toulouse to the Mediterranean.

From what I can garner, the two-headed vehicle used on this slope is a conjoining of two Diesel railcars built by Soulé in the early 70s, running on tyres and featuring a daunting-looking shield. This shield would be lowered behind a boat, and the machine would travel up and down the slope, carrying along the boat and the water it bathed in!

However, the performance of this system is less impressive than the Inclined Plane. It bypasses 5 locks, and saves 45 minutes of travel time. That's not nothing, but if you arrived at an end and just missed the train, then going straight to the locks wasn't going to be much longer than waiting for the next one. Also, far more power is required to make this work (I'm reading 1000 hp motors, versus 125 hp for the Inclined Plane), and it's Diesel.

These photos were taken in late 2017, 8 years after the water slope closed. It was only serving leisure boats by then, and, as I've insinuated, it wasn't very economical to run. As far as I can tell, the 5 locks beside it never closed, and are in use today.

The slope and its tractor have since been renovated, and the site's current state can be seen in a Tim Traveller video published in 2021.

Timeline for Nikoletta Bordeaux

(since I don't have her story written out and don't have time to start it, I figured I'd put this together to keep things organized)

1982 (December 21) - Nikoletta is born in New Orleans.

1983 - Nikoletta's mother leaves the picture shortly after she's weaned onto solid foods. She is raised by her father, Raymond Bordeaux

1998 - Nikoletta is sixteen. Her father is killed in a drunk driving accident. Nikoletta begins running a voodoo scam to pay for her last two years of high school.

2000 - Nikoletta graduates high school and continues to run her voodoo scam. She makes enough money to survive, though only just. At this time, Abner is living with his mother and siblings in STAR Labs, in the early stages of testing.

2006 (May): Nikoletta is 23. She is kidnapped by STAR Labs for experimentation. She is in the labs for about a month while they run experiments.

2006 (June): The tests at STAR Labs finally succeed, and Nikoletta is linked to a shadow realm. She develops her shadow-touch and eventually learns how to move through shadows. She uses this ability to escape STAR Labs the first chance she gets. At this time, Abner is on another floor of the building, undergoing experimentation of his own.

2007: After escaping STAR Labs, Nikoletta returns to running her voodoo scam on the streets of New Orleans. She supplements this by breaking into homes, using her shadow-walking to vanish without a trace.

2010: Nikoletta is caught in the act of breaking and entering and is arrested. She is given a power dampener and sent to Belle Reve.

2011 (January): The power dampener glitches, and it is briefly removed to be replaced. Nikoletta uses the opportunity to escape Belle Reve by shadow-walking. At this time, Abner and his siblings are in the late stages of experimentation.

2011 (October): Nikoletta is caught again, this time for a chain of assaults - her victims survived, but each was left with an unmistakable inky handprint across their faces. It was ruled disfiguring, and she was charged heavily and sent back to Belle Reve

2012: Nikoletta settles into Belle Reve and decides that it's a safer life than living impoverished on the street. She begins cultivating her reputation as the Queen of Belle Reve.

2015: Nikoletta is 32/33. She has now secured her reputation as the Queen of Belle Reve, and no longer wears a power dampener. She has an understanding with Amanda Waller - she keeps things "clean" by marking certain prisoners with her shadow-touch, controlling the violence in Belle Reve, in exchange for a safe cell and some amenities. While she could escape at any point, she stays in Belle Reve to maintain her power and control.

2016: Abner is sent to Belle Reve for blowing up STAR Labs. He is attacked his first day by another prisoner, and Nikoletta rescues him by "marking" his attacker (opening him up to violence from the other prisoners) and encourages Abner to keep his head down.

2017: The Suicide Squad is formed, though neither Nikoletta nor Abner are sent on missions. Nikoletta and Abner have sparse but friendly interactions.

2021 (April): Abner's presence results in greater conflict at Belle Reve as Calendar Man and others use him as a target. Amanda Waller subtly requests that Nikoletta mark him - the easiest way to remove the conflict before it gets worse, and she doesn't see any use for him. Nikoletta refuses, and keeps this interaction a secret from the other prisoners.

2021 (August): Abner is assigned to the Suicide Squad's mission to Corto Maltese. Nikoletta is also assigned - she suspects Waller is upset about her disobeying, and wants to get them both out of the way. She debates escaping the mission by shadow-walking, but eventually decides against it.

2021 (August): The mission to Corto Maltese takes place. Nikoletta and Abner grow closer through the mission and form a budding romance. She rescues him from Starro by pushing him into the shadow realm. She wakes up days later in the hospital, drained and exhausted but without her shadow-touch (the exertion of pushing another person in the shadow realm drained her of the excess shadows). She finds Abner in the hospital room with her, holding her hand.

2021 (September): She and Abner move into a low-budget apartment on the outskirts of New Orleans.

2021 (November): She and Abner adopt two cats - a black cat named Baron and a gray American shorthair named Barbie (short for Barbershop Quartet). Both cats were rescued strays, Baron found near one of New Orleans' many voodoo shops and Barbie found in an alleyway behind a hair salon.

2022 (January): Nikoletta's shadow-touch briefly returns, which causes her to panic. She learns to expel the excess shadows, as she did during the battle with Starro. Eventually this will become a routine - every few months, her shadow-touch returns and she drains the shadows, leaving her weak for about a day afterwards.
