We watched Civil War early on in the month and although some of the camera stuff wasn't on (watching any photography-focused movie with a person who was a photojournalist for over a decade, when oneself also has decades of photography experience is like watching VH1 Pop Up Video) the music was a fun mix, and reminded me how much I love the band Suicide, and the use of 'Rocket USA' was solid.
Speaking of music from movies, 'Sara Loves Her Juicy Fruit' has been on my monthly playlists before and is from Creep 2. It came up naturally in a suggested playlist and I dug it and couldn't figure out why more of this "Albert Natural" band wasn't out there then learned it was just a movie-only song very much riffing on like, Phish (though my partner clarifies it really is more in the style of Umphrey's McGee).
Realising there are a lot of covers in this one.
Related media to some of the songs:
We all know 'Baker Street' but have you heard the demo, which has guitar in place of sax? It's got a different, but also very good, vibe. Not as sad, more dreamy, I guess?
The_miracle_aligner overall has many classic language covers of songs that bop, but this cover of 'All Star' also I think is one of those covers that helps underline how genuinely a bop a song is. I've linked the orchestral version by Eric E. Britt before, I'm sure.
Hey, you know how I first heard The Polyphonic Spree? In a flash game called The Quest For The Rest, by Amanita Design. The first scene of it is thankfully archived on Archive dot org, and it was so wild to play it um, literally 20 years later.
Anyway here's a link to August's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
And embedded, if you like that:
'A Message to You Rudy - 2015 Remaster' - The Specials
'Come On Let's Go' - Broadcast
'King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1' - Neutral Milk Hotel
'Owner of a Lonely Heart' - Yes
'Everybody's Gotta Live' - Love
'Sara Loves Her Juicy Fruit' - Albert Natural
'Treat Me Right' - Norma Tanega
'Bone' - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
'Hopscotch' - Pinc Louds
'The Secret To Life' - FIZZ
'Pure' - The Lightning Seeds
'All Star in Classical Latin' - The_miracle_aligner
'A Beautiful Morning - Single Version' - The Rascals
'Baker Street' - Gerry Rafferty
'This Is Gonna Hurt' - Dirty Nice
'Water Underground' - Real Estate
'Repetition Kills You' - The Black Ghosts
'Section 12 - Hold Me Now' - The Polyphonic Spree
'Black Hole Sun' - Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox
'Hold Me Closer' - Elton John
'Happiness' - Lovequest
'f*ckthat' - IAN SWEET
'Wicked Game' - Giant Drag

It’s snowing
another snowfall
an icy vibration of stillness, perhaps
no, I have that ringing in my ear
that chatters uncontrollably
as if I’m standing naked
in the negative degrees
it keeps me warm
and in motion
emotive, a hopscotch dance
my teeth can’t stop
and that’s my minds cue
to start its own bop

Tune-Yards’ Exuberant Vulnerability
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The thrill of a Tune-Yards show usually comes from watching Merrill Garbus build up and deconstruct songs using live recording, sampling, and loops. That “live” aspect, and the sonic warts that come with watching imperfect humans play instruments and through sound systems subject to randomness and failure, is what I find myself missing most from “the real thing” when watching the COVID-era livestreams, especially ones that are immaculately produced, mixed, and mastered before reaching a larger audience. Fortunately for us, last night on Noonchorus, Garbus and bandmate Nate Brenner rolled with the format and succeeded wildly.
For one, they took full use of having a camera that can do tricks with the push of a few buttons; it swirled and circled around Garbus’ face as the band opened with “hypnotized”, a standout from their great new album sketchy., making me realize why they called the show Party in a Can. (I could imagine being rolled in a giant can listening to the beautiful cacophony of drum machine samples, synths, and guitars.) For “Look at Your Hands”, Garbus broke the 4th wall and was handed a plastic arm from someone on the other side of the camera, which she carried around and used to hit her sample pads, like an even more absurd version of David Byrne’s American Utopia stage production. The camera was also able to reveal more of Garbus’ pedal wizardry, zooming in on her feet as she trigged samples and processed sounds, an electronic counterpoint to the raw, acoustic power of her booming voice.
I figured that since the performance would be less than an hour, it would act as a pseudo release show for sketchy., and Garbus and Brenner did play the warped, harmonic, shadowy “homewrecker”, bop “sometime”, and moving “hold yourself”. Though sketchy. is in this listener’s ears a welcome return to form from the far-too-electronic-leaning missteps of I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life, I was glad to hear the tracks that made Garbus break out as a creative force in the first place, like whokill’s bursting “Powa”, arpeggiated and exhilarating “Bizness” and the handclap hopscotch jam “Water Fountain”, whose namesake foundation was collecting donations from the livestream. (Garbus started the Water Fountain Fund after the release of nikki nack; it financially supports organizations dedicated to all sorts of water-related issues.) And there was also a moment where Garbus started humming on top of a skittering techno beat--“It sounds kind of like ‘Idioteque’,” I thought to myself [Editor’s note: It was], even going so far as to recontextualize some of the more dance-and-disco-heavy songs on Private Life.
Perhaps the most enlightening moment of the livestream, on the other hand, was the post-show Q&A, where fans had the opportunity to do my job and ask Garbus and Brenner questions about topics like their rhythm-driven songwriting, approach to album sequencing, how each of them specifically composes to sound off-kilter on purpose, and their hobbies outside of music. (Garbus gardens, while Brenner’s become an expert plant identifier--and watches a lot of basketball.) The thought-provoking final question had Garbus think about the very beginning of tune-yards, Bird-Brains, the debut album she recorded on a hand recorder mixed with a shareware assembling program, whose environmental limitations led to her now trademark percussion-dependent sound. At the time, she lived in Vermont and was nannying, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life and suffering from depression, wondering whether the music she was making was worth anything, affecting her own self-worth. That, according to Garbus, was the biggest fear she had to overcome when creating the Tune-Yards project, one that she overcame by simply succumbing to the joy of making exuberant, physical music. Brenner asked her whether this fear is still there, and Garbus said while it’s less, it is. Listening to her share her vulnerability, I thought about the band’s closing performance of “hold yourself”, a song whose restrained hip hop drum beat and soulful horns match the sentiment in the bridge: “We all have doubts / We all have rage / We all have trouble being brave enough to turn the page / But we will.” As the song broke down, Garbus ran circles around the room belting the chorus, “Hold ourselves now / Yes, we will hold ourselves now.” So, yes, while the fear’s still there, Tune-Yards is still overcoming those fears for Garbus.

90′s Baby
Description: A series of glances into Bucky and the new Agent’s (whose got him wrapped around his finger) life.
Warning: Fluff, Mentions of Abuse, Blood?
A/N: I told you I would be back once I got access to a laptop. I’ve been writing this through my phone for months now, so hopefully, y’all enjoy. I have somewhat checked for spelling/grammar errors and it’s too long for me to actually look at it, so apologies in advance.
He’d been used to being up at all hours of the night, the nightmares didn’t plague him as much anymore but he enjoyed the quiet. He didn’t think that a 3am drive would mean listening to you (the agent Fury assigned to Sam and him) blaring the lyrics of some song that he didn’t know.
(Sam did though, since he kept making the same hand motion as you every time the chorus came back around.)
Bucky sighed, his head hitting the back of the passenger seat.
“When you punch Baron ZERO in the face, can I play this song in the background?!” You laughed, yelling the chorus again, Sam and you making the hand motion once again. His eyes lulled to the side, watching your face to see if you were serious - he couldn’t tell (he never could tell with you), so he in turn replied, a hard “No”.
“But Buuuuuuuckyyyyyy” you whined. “N*Sync is a great band and ‘Bye, Bye, Bye’ is a BOP” the ‘p’ enunciated with a pop. “And you’d look great! Fist flying!! Your knuckle coming in contact with his dumb Hydra face!! Telling him to shut the FUCK up -“
“That’s MY line, sweet stuff.” Sam butted in. “I’m tired of listening to that lima bean’s recordings of his plans and how he is going to ‘reboot’ Scrap Metal over here into a killing machine.”
Bucky squeezed his eyes shut, shaking his head. “I don’t need theme music, y/n and as much as I’m over listening to Zemo’s ridiculous plan, I’d rather you not interrupt me smashing his face in with you telling him to shut up, Bird Brain.”
Y/N sighed, “You are no fun, James.” Bucky’s eyebrow raising at the change in name, it makes his skin crawl slightly. “Just keep driving, I would like to get to the lookout before sunrise. Ya know, ‘cause we’re undercover.” Y/n rolls her eyes her foot pressing down on the gas, speeding up a bit more, “Whatever you say, Captain.”
“Hey! Last time I checked, I’m the Captain around here!” Sam screeched, throwing himself between the front seats of the Super Soldier and the young agent.
—————
You could feel the burns covering your skin. The smell of slightly burning flesh and cigarette smoke filled the air and you were becoming nauseous. Your eyes lazily scanning the room again, all your previous exits had been blocked off. He’d covered them in plywood, well enough that no one could see you but not well enough that you couldn’t tell if it was day, or night. You were tired. You wanted to rest. Maybe he’d actually stand by his promises of letting you go, if you behaved well enough for him.
Nothing was ever “well enough”.
The sun had risen, a new day, a new form of tourtue. You thought once the state took you from your abusive home that you could have a fresh start. Fresh start meant a new level of abuse. Life was cruel and it taunted you. You swallowed, trying to quench your thirst for some kind of liquid. You’d honestly drink sewage water at this point. The thought making your stomach turn once again.
You could hear him, he was giving himself a pep talk. You closed your eyes, brushing your legs together, the feeling of cold metal rubbed against your ankles and you wondered if there was any skin left. A deep breath, holding back tears and a small sigh. You were preparing yourself for whatever was to come.
“Y/n?” You felt a soft hand on your shoulder. Your eyes were open, and you didn’t see him, so who was touching you?
“Come on, Y/n. You can break out of this. Just listen to my voice…” whoever was speaking, felt so far away and your mind felt as if it was short circuiting. You were in that house, with him, but he wasn’t talking to you and he still hadn’t left his room. You closed your eyes, trying to zoom in on the voice. That voice that sounded so familiar yet so far…
“One more deep breath, hold it. One, two, three, four -“ your head whipped to the side, your eyes shot open and in your full line of vision was Sam and Bucky. You let out the breath you don’t necessarily remember holding and let your eyes scan the room. You were on a stakeout. In Rome. With Sam and Bucky. You were - safe.
“You alright, kid?” Sam asked, his eyes filled with worry, scanning your face for any lingering signs of the trama your brain has decided to put you through. You sat up, slowly (as Sam had always advised after having a -trip-), resting your hands on your knees.
“Yeah, I’ve been better, I’m alright though. I guess I zoned out?” You questioned, not remembering how it all happened and the last conscious decision you had made prior to your brain being hijacked was a blur.
Sam smiled softly, Bucky nodded as an answer to your question. He placed his left hand on the back of your neck, the cooling sensation allowing your body to slowly come further back into reality.
“You were having a full conversation with us. Something about churros and how you were upset I’d never had one. Promised that when we went back home, you’d buy me a whooooole bunch.” Bucky chuckled softly at the thought. “Then you just, left us.” His thumb running up and down the base of your neck, fingers squeezing just slightly, relieving the tightness you could feel building.
Your eyes dropped, you hadn’t had an episode in awhile, you were getting better. It ate at you. How were you supposed to be a good agent if you didn’t even know your triggers? You sighed, hands wringing together.
“Sorry guys. I didn’t mean to scare you. I just - I, I don’t know what caused it.” A hand was placed on your knee and your eyes moved up to meet Sam’s. “No sorry’s. It happens. We’re just glad we could pull you out. Wanna talk about it?”
“No.” You shook your head, breathing in deeply and staring at the two men in front of you. “Is it okay if I just lay here for a bit? I feel like I’ve just tried to beat Buck over here in a marathon.” Bucky laughed, while simultaneously helping you lay down, his hand never leaving the back of your neck.
“You rest. Bird brain and I got this.” His fingers slowly dragged themselves from underneath you, the cold sensation leaving your skin. You closed your eyes and rolled onto your side. Maybe you could get a little bit of rest before you three let hellfire rain on the goons of Hydra.
——————-
“Last time I checked, that isn’t how you get a ladies attention.” Your fist coming into contact with the nameless man’s face. Once Hydra Goon #1 was out, it was off to find Bird Boy and Beer Can. Rounding your way around the eerily lit hallway, you found a number of bodies scattered on the floor. Separating probably wasn’t your best option, especially once you found out .2 seconds in that the lovely allies of Hydra had made the building communication proof - but too late now.
Hopscotching around the downed men you finally spotted your favourite Super Soldier, snipper at his side, and the small strands of hair that were still a bit long (thanks to his impromptu haircut) sticking at the base of his neck. “Howdy aluminum foil.”
Bucky turned to face you, a small gash covering the right side of his cheek. He raised an eyebrow as he watched your face contort itself into a pout. “You got hurt, Jaime. Which dumbass did it. I’ll kick their shins.”
You watched as he rolled his eyes and flicked his sniper softly so it pointed to the man behind him, with a perfect bullet hole through the chest. “I don’t think kicking him in the shins is going to be necessary, dollface.” He leaned in closer to you, his flesh hand coming in contact with your left eye, “Besides, if anyone needs’ta be kicked in the shins it’s whoever left my fav agent with a shiner the size of Kentucky.”
“First off: Kentucky ISN’T that large and neither is this bruise. Secondly: I punched him in the face afterwards, his nose might now be located between his eyes.”
Bucky laughed, his hand moving off your face to fall onto your shoulder. “If you say so, kid. Come on, let’s go find the Central Park Pigeon before he loses a feather.”

1. Candyland: What is your favorite type of candy? Gummies. I’m not really into chocolate or caramel candies. 2. Chutes & Ladders: Do you have a fear of going up on ladders? Does your house have a laundry chute somewhere? I’ve never had to climb up a ladder but I do think I could just as well have a fear of it since as a kindergartener I was always afraid of going up the jungle gyms. I don’t know what a laundry chute is. 3. Operation: How many surgeries have you had in your lifetime? Zero, thank goodness. The idea of having to be put under and then being sliced open makes me feel faint lmao. 4. Sorry!: Do you sometimes apologize, even when it’s not your fault? Yes, abusive people can make you pick it up as a habit. 5. Game of Life: What is your greatest accomplishment thus far? What do you hope to do with the rest of your life? I count getting into my university as my biggest accomplishment so far, but I know I can still do so much more. I don’t really have a specific career goal, but I do want to ultimately be the best at whatever job I end up in and to be the happy with whoever I end up becoming.
6. Cootie: Did you really used to think that boys/girls had cooties? No...I never heard of those until I was ten watching American cartoons. 7. Trouble: What is something big that you got into a lot of trouble for? My algebra grades in high school. I almost flunked freshman algeb and nearly had to go to summer school. Math was never my strong suit in those days, heh. 8. Puzzles: When was the last time you felt puzzled/confused? How often do you feel like you don’t fit in? The other day while making Gab’s surprise birthday video. I had never made a video before, so the program itself was very foreign to me and at first I doubted I could ever come up with anything. Luckily my sister, who is in film school, was such a big help in helping me get acquainted with the different features and buttons haha. As for feeling like I don’t fit in, I haven’t really felt that a lot in the last couple of years. Other than my experience with AIESEC, I’ve been a lot better in dealing with different groups of people and adjusting to their interests and personalities. 9. Hungry Hungry Hippos: What’s your favorite meal to eat? A nice juicy burger usually works for me. 10. Uno: Can you count to ten in another language? If so, which language? Filipino, Spanish, and Korean. 11. Go Fish!: Have you ever been fishing before? No. I've always lived in the city so I’ve never been exposed to fishing. It’s very common for those living in the province, though. 12. Old Maid: Did you ever have a maid in your house, growing up? We had house help for a short time when we first moved into our house. But because my mom is super organized and very particular about it, we went through like 15 house help in total before she realized she’d rather do everything herself. There were three who stayed longer than a few months because my mom found them very good, but they all wanted to go back to the province eventually so we had to give them up. Most stayed for like a day or two, a week at most. 13. Simon Says: Did you always do everything you were told as a child? I think so, yeah. 14. Red Light, Green Light: When you approach a yellow light, are you more likely to slow down or speed up? Depends if I’m in a hurry or not. 15. Are you any good at jump rope, hopscotch, or hula hooping? Have you ever used a pogo stick before? I can do the first three. I’ve never used a pogo stick and have only seen it in cartoons. Looks fun but I also know I’d break my bones using them lol. 16. Do you prefer chalk or bubbles? Two very different things, but I remember loving bubbles as a kid. My only encounter with chalk was when we’d draw a hopscotch court on the ground, so yeah not a lot of interaction with it. 17. Did you used to go on a lot of bike rides as a child? Not really. My lola always told us we couldn’t go too far away from home, so I followed her. 18. Capture the Flag: What is your country’s flag? What about your state’s flag, if you have one? The Philippine flag has a white triangle at the left side with three stars symbolizing our three main islands, and a sun with its eight rays symbolizing the eight provinces that had big contributions in the 1896 revolution against Spain. On the right, the flag is divided into blue on top symbolizing peace, and red symbolizing patriotism. The two colors can be switched depending if the country’s at war. 19. Tic Tac Toe: When you played, were you the “hugs” or the “kisses”? I dunno, I picked whatever symbol I felt like picking if someone would ask me to play. 20. Have you ever won a game of Marco Polo in the pool without cheating? I’ve never played Marco Polo because I don’t know how the game works. Not very common here. 21. Scrabble: Are you any good at spelling? Yes. I was That student who aced all the spelling quizzes in English class lol. 22. While playing rock, paper, scissors, which do you usually throw down first? I always mix it up. 23. Were you always stuck being the pickle in the middle? I don’t know what this means. 24. Limbo: How low can you go? We never really played this. 25. When playing, did you usually pick “Truth” or “Dare”? Truth, because I have no problem telling it and people usually pick pretty shitty dares for you to do. 26. Have you been involved in any innocent games of Spin the Bottle or 7 Minutes in Heaven? No. Not common games here. I didn’t even know about 7 Minutes in Heaven until I watched 13 Going on 30 when I was like, 14 lolol. 27. Twister: Are you a flexible person (figuratively or literally)? I’m not very physically flexible. I can adjust for a lot of situations, though. 28. Did you used to pretend that the floor was lava? Kinda? In my old school there was a line pattern on the school grounds, and when I would walk I’d try not to hit any of the lines. 29. Guess Who: Are you any good at guessing games? Sure. 30. Clue: Do you think that you would be able to successfully solve a murder case? No, I don’t really like brainteasers like those. 31. Mouse Trap: Have you ever felt trapped before, in some way? Of course, in various ways. I’ve felt trapped at home, in my course, in my own head, etc. 32. Labyrinth: Have you ever gotten lost in a maze? No, that sounds terrifying and just reminds me of The Shining, eugh. 33. Jenga: Are you careful about what choices you make in life? I try to not be reckless, at least. 34. Bop it or Skip-it? Neither. 35. Tag: Are you in shape? Do you enjoy running? I wouldn’t say I am, but my body is also not in an unhealthy shape. I hate running. 36. Kickball: Did you kick the ball over the fence a lot as a kid? No. Houses here don’t really have fences. 37. Are you any good at mini-golf? No, never played. 38. Telephone: What do you do with a rumor once it’s been told to you? I didn’t really get a lot of rumors about me. The one time I did, it was so stupid I told our head teacher about it to put it to rest immediately. 39. Hide and Seek: Have you ever hid so well that it felt like it took somebody forever to find you? What was your best hiding spot? No. I don’t like making people nervous for too long. I didn’t have a hiding spot. 40. What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?: When were you old enough to tell time on an analog clock as opposed to a digital one? Hahahaha I don’t actually remember. I wanna say 8 years old? 41. Mother May I: Did you always ask your parents for permission? Yes. Always better for them to know what I’m up to than sneaking out and being caught. 42. Follow the Leader: Can you be bossy at times? I can be bossy all the time. 43. Monopoly: Are you good with your money/finances? If I absolutely have to save, like if Christmas is coming up, I’ll surprise myself at how good I can be. Most of the time though I like treating myself :/ Lmao. 44. Chess: Have you ever wanted to be king/queen? Only when I was younger. I’d wear a blanket around and pretend it was a cape. 45. Play-doh or Slime? Ooh that’s a toughie, those are my favorite kinds of toys. I did grow up with Play-Doh though and even had a Play-Doh Factory, so I’d go with that. [a-zebra-is-a-striped-horse]

1. Candyland: What is your favorite type of candy? White chocolate. Like, white chocolate Reese’s. Yum. 2. Chutes & Ladders: Do you have a fear of going up on ladders? Does your house have a laundry chute somewhere? It does seem like it’d be scary. I would worry about it falling backward or it sliding off whatever it’s leaning against. Or me just falling off somehow. And no, we don’t have a laundry chute. That would be nice. 3. Operation: How many surgeries have you had in your lifetime? Seven. 4. Sorry!: Do you sometimes apologize, even when it’s not your fault? Yeppp. I’m quick to blame myself or find fault in something I did. I can be so understanding and forgiving when it comes to other people, but I’m very hard on myself.
5. Game of Life: What is your greatest accomplishment thus far? What do you hope to do with the rest of your life? You would think it would be graduating UC and obtaining my BA in psychology, but I feel like such a failure and disappointment because all that degree has done in the 5 years since I’ve graduated is collect dust on a shelf. I have NO idea what I want to do with my life, but I know I don’t even want to purse that anymore. :/ It just feels like such a waste now, not an accomplishment.
6. Cootie: Did you really used to think that boys/girls had cooties? Nah. I played with boys and girls growing up. 7. Trouble: What is something big that you got into a lot of trouble for? When I was like 11 or 12 I went into teen or adult chatrooms (remember AOL chatrooms??) and said inappropriate things and IMed with some guys. :X Somehow my mom found out and yeah, needless to say she was not happy. 8. Puzzles: When was the last time you felt puzzled/confused? How often do you feel like you don’t fit in? I’ve felt confused about a lot of things for a long time now. I like reading or watching murder mysteries and try to figure it out while I go, and I’ve always wanted to go to a murder mystery party, but I don’t know if I could solve a murder case for real. Real life is a lot more complicated, it’s not alll laid out or presented for you like it is in a book or TV show. It’d also be very stressful. 31.
