WHAT THE FUCK ARE THESE THINGS?

In the Roman Empire, from Wales to the Mediterranean, about 100 of these things have been found and are, and still nobody knows what they are.

"Called 'dodecahedrons' after their shape, which is a dodecahedron, and so easily gave them the model for things that look like dodecahedrons. Each one is a hollow stone or bronze object, 4–12 centimeters (1.5–5 in) in diameter, with 12 flat pentagonal faces and holes of varying sizes on each face. Small knobs protrude from each corner.

"While the Romans were usually obsessive and meticulous about keeping written records about anything and everything they did, nobody has ever seen an owner's manual, found a definitive list or descriptions of these objects. The closest we have is Plutarch, who is not an object, just human, who had bought a store whenhe had flashed on the genius of 'reading the stars' for college kids. He could peek at the stars and render detailed 12X12 charts of each student's personal reading, roll them up and tie them with a bow, and place a box of them at each register, oh, and call them a punchy, "HOROSCOPES" for the average Roman citizen, who reportedly thought the mysterious scrolls were at least some sort of zodiacal instrument."

A Roman dodecahedron is a small hollow object made of bronze or stone, with a dodecahedral shape: twelve flat pentagonal faces, each having a circular hole in the middle which connects to the hollowed-out center. Roman dodecahedra date from the 2nd or 3rd centuries CE. Which makes it so fascinating that ancient Romans call them dodecahedrons, which happens to be our exact word for them we use in today's new geometry.

About a hundred of these dodecahedra have been found[1] from Wales to Hungary and to the east of Italy, with most found in Germany and France. Ranging from 4 cm to 11 cm in size, they also vary in terms of textures. Most of them are made of bronze but some also seem to be made of stone.

The function or use of the dodecahedra is unknown; no mention of them has been found in contemporary accounts or pictures of the time.

Speculated uses include:

candlestick holders (wax was found inside one example)

dice

fib widget

Knitting

survey instruments

devices for determining the optimal sowing date for winter grain

that they were used to calibrate water pipes, and army standard bases.

It has also been suggested that they may have been religious artifacts of some kind. This latter speculation is based on the fact that most of the examples have been found in Gallo-Roman areas, some have promoted the idea it's an ancient sex toy, often a frightening form of ....... dildo.

My mom needs a little extra help getting up and down stairs these days. Yesterday I welded up a new railing for the back porch stairs for her to use. It opens up more room for her to roam. This is with 1st coat of primer and I will get it painted and installed by next weekend. The new railing matches the front stair railing, outside basement stairs, railing in the street, and the Juliet balcony I made for the house. my sensibility seems very heighten today, but fragile, like when a high note is on the verge of breaking glass. as i was walking back from the shop through the georgian streets of my city i felt SO overwhelmed by the history of every street, building and the people who once inhabited them. genuinely weighed down by the realisation that every single person that existed before, however short their life may have been, lived and that i’ll never know it all. i’ll never know even a fraction of it all. there’s so many hidden and unspoken histories, the lives of everyday people that aren’t told, but possibly carry more heartbreak, more horror, more happiness and more sorrow than any books we read or films we watch. and it was the tangibility of it all that really got me. how people have stared out of the same windows i look into and see my own reflection, used the bootscrapers by the front door, almost tripped on the cobbled stone of the street, saw the trees that now stand tall and saplings just beginning to grow. for once in my life the preservation of all that history feel like a burden. like an impossibility. that many material things don’t stay in the past, but the people who used them do. these things stand as a testament to how precarious human life is. and i’ll never know all of it. never know everyone’s individual stories. i could be standing in the spot of someone’s greatest tragedy, i could be looking into the window of a room where a life was born. but i don’t know and i can never know. the history of this place is always thick in the air, it was built  as a monument to a past era, but today i felt drowned in it

I'd first read about @lambofgod in a 2002 Guitar World article covering the top #undergroundheavymetal bands of that time. LOG released their first album, New American Gospel two years earlier. A year later WSOU began playing the tracks "Ruin" and #11th Hour" off the regular. They were of this upcoming, new release from LOG called As The Palaces Burn on @prostheticrecords...and both tracks kicked serious ass. I BOUGHT ATPB on the week of its release at Sam Goody on a Friday night before being abducted by some younger kids who felt bad(?) that I was sitting by myself at Johnny Rockets. I can't make that up. What took me by surprise more than ANYTHING else was seeing that, while there weren't too many guitar solos on the record (that'd change over time!), the track "Purified" featured a badass guitar solo by ex-Megadeth guitarist @chrispoland_official. CHRIS FUCKING POLAND!!!!!! Turns out the band are Megadeth disciples all the way down to their sometimes political lyrics What was more? The album was also produced by @dvntownsend, then of Strapping Young Lad. He to me was the Todd Rundgren of #extrememetal, so you knew he wasn't producing anything short of true QUALITY metal. As fate would have it, ATPB would sell 100,000 copies, much like @shadowsfallband did with The Art Of Balance, in a time where albums sales were dying, and earned themselves their first major label deal a yearly later.
