This is a book I enjoyed , if you like ( Horror, Thrillers, Fiction ) Then it's worth giving this one a try, I enjoyed it 😊. I've added a little synopsis below to give you an idea of what it's about 😁.
Synopsis :
In 1945, Hitler unleashed the Blood Death on Britain as his final act of vengeance. Those who died at once were the lucky ones. The really unfortunate took years. The survivors - people like me, who had the blood group that kept us safe from the disease - were now targets for those who believed our blood could save them.I survived for three years. I lived alone, spending my days avoiding the fascist Blackshirts who wanted my blood for their dying leader. Then I met the others - and life got complicated all over again . . .

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

i'm so used to there just being random unidentified bones laying around everywhere in these damn books that it finally occurred to me, just now, to wonder where the bones on new rho came from. y'know, the bones palamedes always tried to teach nona necromancy on.
they're his.
palamedes, who always loved teaching, living on borrowed time in a body that's not his own. palamedes, mentoring, teaching- parenting, by sixth standards, mind you. and that boy is sixth, through and through.
and the entire point of teaching nona necromancy in the first place was to try and determine if nona is, well, nonagesimus, right? so it has to be bones, it can't not be bones. bones are, like, her whole thing.
but they're not in the nine houses, anymore. things are different, on new rho.
they burn bones here. dig up the cemeteries. a society terrified of zombies will evolve to dispose of its dead differently.
the only bones he has access to now are his own. (camilla wouldn't let anyone take them- skull or hand, doesn't matter. they're still him, and she doesn't let go, remember? it's her one thing.)
palamedes woke up every morning wearing someone else's body to then gently place the shrapnel of his own in the cupped palms of a girl who's the closest thing he'll ever have to a daughter and try to teach her- how did the angel put it, again? normal school, as much as possible, for as long as possible.
(but hey, in a roundabout way, at least it's a chance for him to touch camilla again, right? nevermind that she's not there to feel any of it because he's in the driver's seat, that he can only stay for fifteen minutes at a time. it's atoms that belong to camilla touching atoms that used to belong to him, and that's close enough. he'll take what he can get, these days- if she can be their flesh, he can be the end. so what if holding his own bones is a mindfuck? so what if looking at them makes him nauseous? surely he can suck it up and deal with it for fifteen minutes. it's the least he can do— his poor camilla was the one who had to scrape the bloody pulp of them off the floors of canaan house.)
(speaking of, here's a fun fact: we actually only see nona practicing with the bones one time, on-page. camilla's final line in that scene, before palamedes takes over, is none other than: 'keep going. there are some bones left.' ow!)
remember, too, that the only part of dulcinea, the real dulcinea, that palamedes ever physically touched, was her tooth- the one that ianthe gave him, pulled from the ashes cytherea burnt her down to. he only ever touched dulcie once, and it wasn't until after she was already gone, but that doesn't matter- it still happened, and you can't take loved away.
in this same roundabout, bittersweet, by-proxy sort of way, palamedes has been physically touched by nona, too: the atoms she currently occupies, touching atoms that he used to occupy, and never will again.
the main interaction we've seen between palamedes and his mother took place back on the sixth, with her acting as mentor and him as pupil: the two of them studying a set of hand bones, juno encouraging him every step of the way.
we know that harrowhark's "most vivid memory of her mother was of her hands guiding harrow's over an inexpertly rendered portion of skull, her fingers encircling the fat baby bracelets of harrow's wrists, tightening this cuff to indicate correct technique."
they're still small for a nineteen year old, but the wrists are bigger, in this new set of memories nona's making. and it's not an inexpertly rendered portion of skull anymore- it's a hand, now, albeit one crafted from [a piece of skull reassembled (painstakingly—passionately—laboriously reassembled) from fragments, manually, and not by a bone magician, from the skull of someone who, soon after death or symptomatically during, had exploded.] and the identity and origin of these bones is no mystery at all. they belong to palamedes, and he's consented to their use for this purpose, and that matters.
but the details are just set dressing, really. the foundation of the memory is the same.
palamedes and his mother, juno and her son.
harrow and her mother; pelleamena and her daughter.
nona and her father-mother-teacher; palamedes and his daughter.

one of the highlights of being wot show-only: looking at the polls and trying to guess which one of foresaken is a therapist and which one scientist gone mad. pretty sure the last one is lanfear, and from the ones we've seen moghedien could be a therapist, but she's probably someone else
out of the Forsaken that have either been named or shown up in the show we got:
medical doctor
therapist specializing in curing intense mental illnesses
philosophy professor
hedge fund manager
professional athlete
theoretical physicist
no one actually knows they just showed up evil one day
I will not tell you who is which one

If tsc3 title isn't The Queen's Men, I will riot
IT JUST MAKES SENSE
Ok ok keep with me here
The first book is The Sunshine Court, to parallel The Foxhole Court
The second book is The Golden Raven, to parallel The Raven King
AND SO
To make any thematicall sense at all
Logistically
The third and final book must be The Queen's Men, to parallel the original ending, The King's Men
It will show the progression of time
It'll be the perfect send off
You'll have the entire court made of all the people Kevin helped get to the top:
Andrew Minyard
Neil Josten
Jean Moreau
Jeremy Knox
And of course the Queen himself
Kevin Day, who is only where he is because of the support of his people
Finally, we'll have the true Perfect Court all together, not under Riko's pathetic rule, but under Kevin, like it was always meant to be.
The end.

WIP Wednesday
Tagged by @lykegenia @greypetrel @ndostairlyrium and @chanafehs this week, thank you all for the tag! Tagging: @exhausted-archivist, @layalu, @inquisimer, @bumblewarden, @pickelda, @bitchesofostwick, @dreadfutures, @pinayelf, @star--nymph, @jtownnn, @idolsgf, @zencetera, @elfroot-and-laurels @persimminwrites @saessenach @midmorninggrey if you have things you want to share! I haven't been writing much the last few weeks for various reasons, but here is a bit of something I've been mulling. It's from the haunted house AU I've been writing on and off for the last year or so (Bones and All is what it's actually called, it has a name now). I don't think I've shared this bit before, but I can't find the other snippet lol:
(No pairing | 559 Words | Horror elements, no gore)
Hawke hadn’t meant anything by it when she’d stacked the worst of the furniture by the door.
She had, perhaps, intended to walk to town tomorrow and see if there was anyone who might haul the gruesome lot of it away. It was not her style (she had wondered, looking at the upturned faces of the lambs gamboling over the loveseat's back, if it had ever been anyone’s style), it was just worn and broken enough to merit getting rid of, and that had been the extent of her concern. One by one, the worst things had been dragged or carried to the pile by the door and she’d thought no more of it.
The first low, creaking groan came sometime in the night. Hawke, who’d been half-drowsing by the last of the lamplight, stirred at the sound, but didn’t get up. Old houses settled. This one just—just settled more than others. That was all.
The second noise was unmistakable, less a groan and more of a drawn-out dragging sound. Hawke scraped the sleep from her eyes and straightened in her chair, listening. Wood on wood—that’s what it had to be. But what—
The sound rose in pitch and grew louder, louder, until it was a roar in her ears—no, a shriek, a scream, a wounded thing wailing its rage and fear in one great cry—and Hawke had clapped her hands over her ears before she could remember deciding to do it.
“Stop it,” she said, her voice muffled and unfamiliar to her covered ears. “Stop it. Stop it!”
All at once, the sound cut off, as if some great door had been slammed between her and it. She found her skin clammy with sweat, her breath coming so fast and sharp that it burned. The light in the lamp guttered, though it had shone strongly only a moment ago. She turned the wick until the light chased away the shadows in the corners of the room. It almost looked like an ordinary room in the light—or at least, she tried to convince herself so. An ordinary room. A house anyone might want to live in. Yes; that had to be right.
Her own footsteps were muffled in the hall, though she still hadn’t rolled that dreadful, stained carpet back out. The ground seemed to sink slightly beneath her feet. Something had fallen in the night, perhaps. Maybe it was something important, a joist or a structural beam, and she would have to declare the whole lot of it a lost cause. They would be homeless in truth then, with nowhere for Carver or her mother to go.
It would be an improvement, a small voice whispered in the back of her mind. Anything would be better than this.
“I love this place,” Hawke said, and her voice crawled down the hallway in echoes, “I do. Look at how beautiful it is; anyone would want to live here.”
Some burden resting on both shoulders, some presence which had been looming over her and adding pressure ounce by ounce, eased away so suddenly that Hawke was giddy with it. She laughed, sharp and thready, and half-stumbled down the stairs in her nightgown. The sound; there had been some great sound, some horrible dragging noise. Something in the house had been damaged, surely. She would walk down the stairs and she would see…

do u have any other movies (or other media) you'd recommend to ppl who loved queer?
OH ABSOLUTELY.
as for books:
Dancers from the Dance by Andrew Holleran: set in New York, centers around one character and largely his platonic friendship with an older queen. it's also about queer identity and the seeming near-impossibility of finding love especially while queer. really beautiful character work and really devastating.
I'd also recommend reading Queer if you haven't because it's super short and an easy/engaging read. I personally think the movie enhances the book in a lot of ways but there's really great stuff missing from the final cut of the movie that I adore and it's fun to make those comparisons.
You could also go full-out and read other Burroughs (I haven't yet so take me with a grain of salt) and if you do I'd start with Junky and Naked Lunch which I believe are the most Queer-adjacent works — both tackle similar topics and feature William Lee as the protagonist, though it's not like. a series y'know.
as for movies:
works of David Cronenberg: start with Naked Lunch, obv, because it's a great adaptation and Queer takes direct inspiration from a lot of it! next go for Dead Ringers for identity + codependency and The Fly for more identity exploration. (bonus points if after THAT Dead Ringers you watch the series where Rachel Weisz stars. I love my bi4bi toxic gay media couple)
works of David Lynch: also a direct inspiration for Luca's Queer! he's where a lot of the surrealism comes in which I think is awesome. above anything I'd recommend Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive which are both movies that Also tackle earth-shattering crises of identity and blending into the other etc. both really good.
The Talented Mr. Ripley: not quite the same, but toxic and gay and about how queerness shapes identity. really good. if you haven't seen it you should.
other works of Luca's: I just love this guy. for the most similar vibes I'd go for Bones and All and Suspiria which have elements of codependency and identity and all that good stuff. controversially I would also say to watch Call Me By Your Name if you haven't (and maybe even read the book 😬)? I could say thousands of words about the nuances of choosing to recommend that and it's like. they will tell you that Queer is not CMBYN 2 and they will be right in basically every way. except for the thinking man who knows that Luca read Queer at 18 and it profoundly shaped him and is precisely what makes CMBYN a good movie in the first place. TO ME.
