This image says a lot about what one of the characters is, he is a detective sergeant from the city of Luna, located in Lyca (fictional country in the Hybrid Society book series) This character is called Dave Wingates and will have a hard time in the series of books that I will launch next year. Believe it or not, this book will have an English version too! This art was made by KevinWolf, one of the first artists to join the Furverse publisher.

OKAY.
Went and saw Rebecca Yarros speak at the Paramount Theater in Denver. First of all, thanks to the Paramount, the Tattered Cover, RY herself, and the Fantasy Fangirls Podcast for a great afternoon.
I didn't take video, but I did take notes. There were some vague-ish Onyx Storm spoilers with it being the last stop on the tour, so all notes will be below the cut!
What did she love the most about writing Violet in OS? - she's more confident in this book and more determined in what she has to do - they can't silence her.
Hints of Colonel Aetos's signet? - no, and no song that represents it/him, either.
Any other second signets to share? - no
Any signets we haven't seen yet? - No ... she's not going to steal our theorizing fun. Obviously there are signets we haven't seen yet because Violet hasn't seen them yet.
Question about interpersonal drama between the First Six besides just Lyra and Warrick disagreeing? - will not mention ... possibly because we *may* get more about that at another point.
Why did JFB know so much about feathertails? (basically, was he venin prior/did someone fill him in about it?) - everything JFB mentioned was a known fact about feathertails and was not let in on some vast venin conspiracy before crossing the parapet.
Signets show up when they do because nature wants its balance - which is why we're getting all the powerful signets again.
Is there magic elsewhere? (*wink wink*)(this is referencing the Isles without referencing the Isles)
Can she share Ridoc and Aotrom's Threshing story? - She actually IS considering a bonus scene about this but it's also a lot of "hey" "hey" "hey" "hey" and "did we just become best friends?" between them.
Most satisfying kill of the first two books? - Varrish.
Can she confirm a character BESIDES JESINIA who is safe in the series? - She will not confirm ... except for Broccoli. Broccoli is safe (won't kill pets).
Is there a specific epigraph to pay attention to? - All of them. But speaking of epigraphs ... they may not always directly tie into their respective chapter, but they do have some sort of connection somehow.
Was asked to comment on any of the Zihnal gifts specifically ... and chose not to.
About that new family member/brother ... what might she wish us to pay attention to? - Who is missing; someone who thinks is not enough (... basically, who has a reason to reach for power?).
Insight on how Kaori's records are so incorrect? - Remember, it's the riders that give the name of the dragon for the records. So ... do we trust that people are giving the correct names? Are the dragons?
She's not entirely discounting crazy grandma (Riorson, presumably) ideas ...
Aaric's signet did not manifest in IF.
In terms of percentage of full capacity, what is Violet's second signet at? - 10% (because she has no idea how to train it and there's one person alive that can train her); Xaden's probably at 50% with his; Violet's probably at 85% with her first signet (which yes, is pure power just in the form of lightning).
It is NOT the first time that venin have infiltrated the Basgiath scribes ... but Nasya? Is just narcoleptic (so it's not him).
No comment about seeing a venin scribe on the page prior to OS.
What Taylor Swift song would best describe Violet at the beginning of book four? - Look What You Made Me Do
Can she expand on the song she chose for Bodhi? - He's raised to be in Xaden's shadow; he's the spare.
What prompted her to write Broccoli? - She wanted to scare the crap out of us and then haha just kidding ... and also because it's so much fun to write because of where they are and what it symbolizes.
What does she think it is about the Empyrean world that appeals to everyone? - She wishes she knew ... but said possibly the inclusivity, the dragons, the hot men ...
What would Taylor Swift's signet be? - "I do not tell the queen her business." (... might not be direct direct quote, but close enough)
Tell us about the ring and how long it had been in existence. - We see the stone on the blade at a time and then we don't ...
Who is her favorite god/goddess and why? - Malek because you meet him and you're done; everyone fears him.
What about Onyx Storm makes it her favorite? - Her feet are firmly planted in the world and she loves to go places and do things and she had fun with the politics in the places (read: Isles) and has known the ending since FW and loved working toward it and just had fun. IF was a rough, rough time and writing Variation got her back on track and she just genuinely enjoyed writing OS.
If Ridoc had modern technology, what would be the first thing he would do? - You know that boy downloads Tinder ... doesn't wait for WiFi or anything ... also first photo on the app is of him and the Quest Squad or a selfie with Aotrom (that only has like one of Aotrom's eyes in it).
Speaking of Quest Squad ... describe the patch? - Might see it later! (but probably a map)
There was a question about which of her contemporaries she'd recommend and it depended on if you wanted to cry or not (if you do: Last Letter/Things We Leave Unfinished; if you don't: Variation, In the Likely Event).
Is there a character she was writing and knew they'd be a fan favorite and were or thought they would be and weren't? - Knew Ridoc would; didn't necessarily answer the other half, but reiterated that she had no idea that Broccoli would be an instant fan favorite (and was a late night/early am idea that she kept).
What has been her favorite part of the tour? - Right now because of being on stage at the Paramount, in a venue where she's seen so many shows. And the people who bring their service dogs with the service dragon vests.
MIL was gifted FW; advice for when she gets to the spicy and doesn't know that (audience member) reads them? - Run the other direction ... and then hand her Haunting Adeline so then it'll look tame.
Who does she think is the most underrated character? - Sawyer; also expanding on his relationship with Silseag, Sawyer is worried he's dishonoring him because of needing potential accommodations (like Violet), but Silseag's just waiting for him to come around.
Regarding where she came up with the analogy for the chilled pond/ice for mental health: - Her kids play hockey and she always wonders what's beneath the ice - we can swim through our emotions or glide right over them.
What are her desert island books? - East of Eden (Steinbeck) is her favorite; I missed one series but I did hear the Children of Blood and Bone (iirc) ... but basically she's like can I cheat and bring my kindle?
How has writing her books changed her life? - Still has to take her head up to look around ... but the core of her life - family - hasn't changed; the rest of the world around that core just spins a lot faster and there's a lot more people now to watch her succeed or watch her fail.
Thanks to Broccoli ... what pets exist in the world? - We've already known that domesticated animals exist, so it does open it up to pets, but it's not like they're going to be running around Basgiath.
A character she loves to hate: - She doesn't hate anybody, because everybody has a reason for what they're doing. Except Varrish; she hated Varrish because he was a two dimensional character (read: straight evil).
Advice for a spouse going through her first deployment? - it sucks; everyone does it differently; find a way to escape to keep the spiraling thoughts from coming (she read, personally).
Favorite Onyx Storm vibes playlist song? - Agreed with the audience member's mention of Halsey's Nightmare ... and also thinks that the end of book three is optimistic.
If she could tell readers to reread one specific scene for hidden meaning ... - The last 100 pages.
Can she expand on what it means to be dedicated? - I'm pretty sure she alluded to us getting a bit more info about this in book four, but it's basically that you're given in service to a god.
Did she use parts of Colorado Springs for inspiration for the Gauntlet and Parapet? - Not necessarily those specifically, but CO does play into inspiration for geography, particularly with the mountains (and Aretia).
Weather report for the Continent? - Southern gets warmer (closer to the equator), weather patterns with the mountain ranges, there's more magic in areas of more geologic change (tectonic plates).
Sooo there's mention of pirates and kraken and y'know, Heaton breathes underwater ... - She hasn't written books four and five, but she might use or might not use things she mentions in the series ...
What else can we do to support her as an author? - Read other people's books (and be patient).
Her son asked which is her favorite child (or which son is her favorite and why is it him - it wasn't entirely clear) ... to which she said that it's like she always says - whichever kid is sleeping.
About the TV series: the lines we love are there, a lot of the dialogue is there, it's in good hands with Moira and that she knows what's important (has talked to readers) and is capturing the essence ... and to stop sending Theo James her way for Xaden because he's 40 and white.
Any specific IF Xaden POV scenes she'd love to write? - She would love to write the time in between when Xaden learns Vi is captured and he rescues her (... but it sounds like given secrets boy, we probably won't actually get it).
Final bomb: First three songs on the book four playlist are (all TS): Down Bad, But Daddy I Love Him, I Can Fix Him
... and more Xaden POVs in book four depend on what he's doing.

so excited for the bystander’s cookbook!!
if you are feeling up to it—you visit the Isles and the heat has you feeling super dizzy and faint. how would each tyrrish man take care of you?
I am very excited for it as well. The plot feels good and the drama is there, and the love for Bodhi is in full form.
OS spoilers below, you’ve been advised
This is a good ask. I just finished up OS and those isles…as much as I enjoy warm weather I do not know if I’d ever visit haha. So, how would they take care you
Xaden:
I think we saw a lot of him in the book, the dagger, the gentle caresses, the beautiful gifts
I wouldn’t know much else to add, but knowing Xaden he likes to be a step ahead, so he’d probably have some extra water prepared or he’d wrap you in shadows, creating a cool dome for you to rest in
And not to be too cheeky, I could imagine Xaden would also be someone to…wear you out before so you’d be less likely to want to gout out adventuring and rather you’d stay inside, safe and away from the heat
Garrick:
He would just swoop you up and carry you himself on his back so you wouldn’t have to use any extra strength
Would probably say a joke or too to ease the tension of everyone watching you “I got you love. I knew it, one look at me and you’re already swooning.”
but once you’re out of everyone’s eyesight he’s sitting you down somewhere cool he’s checking in on you, running his hands over your forehead and cheeks to see how warm you are and grabbing you some water
I also think that his dragon Chradh has a soft spot for you and would probably shield you under his wing.
Bodhi:
This sweetie, this gem
He knows something is up, he’s checking in on you throughout the morning, ensuring you’re okay
If you’re one to push it aside and not tell how you’re feeling, he’s keeping an eye on you
He’s catching you the moment you start to waver and picking you up, bridal style of course, and taking you to the shade Immediately
But, he’s not giving you a talking to because you weren’t upfront on how you were feeling, he’s just checking in to make sure you’re alright, putting a towel to your head and helping you cool down.
He gets it, you want to keep up with everyone, so he’s soft when he speaks to you “I know what its like, to want to keep up with everyone. But please, let me know next time okay. We can be a step behind together, alright?”

Llama Llama, Baby Drama - LaylaJeffany - Wednesday (TV 2022) [Archive of Our Own]
Ok, Now I want a lot of OS FICS with Enid taking different jobs and Wednesday going to them and "help her"
---
Sneak peak:
Enid gave an amused chuckle from the doorway, shaking a bottle. “It’s right here, sweet girl.” Bailey kicked her little feet and reached her hands for it. Enid gave her the bottle and she held it with one hand, using the other to twirl at her own, light-brown hair as her eyes instinctively went half shut, but turned back to the book. Wednesday tried to hand the baby over, but Enid winked. “I think you’ve got this. Look, she’s relaxing on you!”
“I don’t like this,” Wednesday grumbled, but didn’t fight it too hard, not wanting to make the baby choke. In general, she wasn’t about to be the good Samaritan to help somebody experiencing that in public, as it seemed like a solid natural consequence, but she didn’t want to be the reason that Enid lost her babysitting gig. (She stubbornly refused to always allow Wednesday to pay for everything and insisted on odd jobs around town to make her own money.)
“You’re doing great,” Enid promised, kneeling at her side, putting a hand on Wednesday’s knee. “It’s good to challenge yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable.”

Tyde Rises
the part 2 of the show where I get to ramble about one of my drs!

the featured fantastic focus tonight 🥁🥁🥁
Today, it's my Perfect CR!
In this reality, I'm startin from eighth grade, though it's the last week before summer and when I start high school. This mirrors when I first created the dr. I live in a really nice neighborhood, and I'll wake up in my room with my alarm (Tongue Tied) going off.

I spend the last week biking to school with my friends, and because it's our last week, we do something special each day! The day that I wake up there, I bake us muffins and we bike to school. There's a field trip to a roller skating rink!

I have various things scripted, but some of my favorites are things that happen in the future. Some of my friends from middle school get into my high school, which is super futuristic, I have time for all my extra curriculars because of how effortless it is for me to get good grades, and because I'm so athletic and a great performer, I'm a star player on a lot of teams and in plays! (I also scripted out my current theater director because we are. not on friendly terms. irrelevant drama)

Other stuff I have scripted, an excellent college in Canada that me and my partners will go to, with majors and schedules suited perfectly for us, the chance to start a band if I so desire, an island with a mansion I can buy so all of my friends and I can live together, a nice car, the works! Plus, guaranteed successful career as a writer/actor!
Then, ofc, all my sweet little "perfect world" rules and additions.
No bigotry except in books as tropes, accessible healthcare and housing, AFAB folk don't get periods but can still have children if they like, copy paste of the Americas so that there was no colonization of the indigenous peoples, space travel is possible and easy when I'm 21.

One of my favorite scenarios from this is the confession for one of my s/os. I'm studying, and they get to my window and knock on it. I walk over and open it really confused as to how they got there, cause my house is a little far from them and I've never had them over. They say “I like you!” Kisses me and runs back to their car and drives off. I sit there and can't focus for the rest of the night. The next day, I see them in the hallway, kiss them and say I like them too.
So yeah!!! Super fun times, will definitely be spending a ton of time there.

A mensagem do Natal: Não há maior poder do que o amor. Ele supera o ódio como a luz supera a escuridão.
Martin Luther King
J. C. Penney
* * * *
Sim, celebrar o Natal é celebrar a trégua e o perdão, a vida e o renovo.

Hey girlie!!!!!
You're not alone in your frustrations with OS. I get that "it the third book, there's going to be world building since it wasn't done earlier blah blah blah" but I personally feel like the ground work should have been done in FW and IF, for continuity and consistency. As most things are...That was one of my biggest gripes about OS. It felt like RY threw everything into a blender and expected us to identify/differentiate what was going, with little to no context. It also kinda felt like a money grab (leaving more questions so the audience stays engaged for book 4 and 5).
I concur about the POV thing, Violet is not a "reliable narrator" but if that's the cause, make it 3rd POV. For the audience's sake, I would not want to leave them confused about your magic system. It just feels sloppy and lazy. It felt like we were reading RY's stream of consciousness, like "Oh heres a thing that just came up in my brain and im going to FORCE it into the story line even if it doesn't make sense". Maybe things will be explained in the later books but I personally feel like that's not necessary.
The fanservice was so jarring for me, it was fine at first, but when it kept happening and it felt like Ridoc was essentially voicing what the fandom felt... I was like "good to know this is canon but also this is supposed to be a romantasy novel, be what you are you supposed to be, not a fanfic".
It also felt like OS was a fanfic I was reading, for which I paid $15 for... and for $15... i personally would not recommend it to anybody ngl. I'm already stuck in this here and I love the fandom too much to leave.
Don't get me wrong, there were parts that I enjoyed (the little side quest arc was probably the most enjoyable for me but it also felt like a filler episode in an anime). The side characters honestly saved it for me. Drake/Mira and the fucking kitten, Sloane/Dain (the yearning???maybe im delulu but whatever). As much as I love Riorgail, I was over it tbh. It felt artificial to me? The no sex the entire book unless there wasn't any magic but all of sudden (right before shit hit the fan? BFFR. I knew it was going to be the last time the were physically together)
Violet was delusional a lot of the time (I get it, when the man you love is becoming the bad guy, I probably wouldn't want to accept that reality either, but if you're telling me she has the "mind of a scribe" she better be logical as fuck, and girlie was not logical, Ridoc was the voice of reason on the isles and told her to draw a line) OR things were just not expanded on enough, like the fact that she just "knew" so much stuff. I get it she's smart, but if we're in her head, we should know what she's learning. I hated that when she came to a conclusion/revelation that she was afraid of, she didn't voice them to the audience. We're the readers, not her friends
Also the fact that there wasnt "any magic" on the isles, but there actually is some??? Fuck off lol
Overall the experience was confusing/jarring but I had a feeling that would be the case, based on my exp from IF (I hate being right) Again idk if it was RY or Red Tower that pushed to have 5 books but i felt like certain parts of the book could have been more concise, instead of leaving the end of a chapter on a cliffhanger. It felt like it was overdone, that by the end of the book, I was over the feeling of "being on edge".
I have to wonder if this is a result of the Iron Flame debacle too, like if some of this worldbuilding could have been in that before it got split, but somehow I don’t think so.
That whole book feels so…I can’t even think about it. The fact we spent all that time and drama trying to get wards and then just…altered them with a rune almost immediately with little effort? 🥺
I definitely understand the stream of consciousness thing. I felt like…like my brain is always searching for patterns, right? It’s how it works, daily, and the way she wrote this there was no connection to anything, the chapters were jarring, there was no link between the plot, subplot, no conjoining thread. It felt like my brain was looking for it like you look for the horizon when you’re on a boat…but the boat keeps jarring you beneath your feet. Does that make sense? It probably doesn’t, but it’s just this feeling like you’re out of your depth.
There were parts I enjoyed too, but since that feeling underlies it, it coloured the whole experience.
I definitely had the feeling of being on edge too and I saw someone say they think the marketing contributed to that and I agree but maybe it was the writing too? I don’t know, I was anxious the whole time for little discernible reason—maybe because they told us we were going to hate the end, I guess?
Anyway thank you for reaching out, I almost regret sharing because I hate being the minority and feeling like everyone is judging me, and I feel like a lot of people get mean when you can’t just ‘no thoughts, just vibes’ your way through it. I wish I could. 🖤

“big name bxg c-fans earn a lot because cpf give their money to them instead of xz and wyb.” 💀
I wanted to address this comment i saw yesterday but I had to organize my thoughts first as best as i could. I also knew GRA events are gonna take up a lot of my time so i had push it back. However, i want to post about it here even if the topic associated to this didn’t blow up that much (thankfully) cause it irritated me. I’m very used to certain fans having a skewed view of bxgs. I understand that no matter what we say, the prejudice is too heavy to even see reason.

So this is more of to explain to bxgs how this statement is completely wrong and why it shouldn’t even be said in the first place.
Let’s start with the context.
On 11/2, when there was supposed to be an entertainment ban, a few hot search tags popped up. The boys’ name or even BXG was not on it but it sort of involved the fandom. The gist is this person is a former big name BXG account back in 2019 who is now a yxh. They earned a lot from that work and was able to buy “ 8 houses”. That was actually what got on HS, the idea that someone who is working as a yxh can be that rich.

I guess people missed the fact that this person earned the money from yxh “work” and not being a BXG account. Some just saw “bxg” so they made a connection and so the comment i posted above was a common statement. The fact that XZ and WYB are top stars too added to the conversation.
First of all, being a big name account that posts about XZ and WYB back in 2019 isn’t that hard. Untamed was at it’s peak that time and so were the active fans. The drama was airing. They had appearances and were practically everywhere. It would not take that much to get the likes, follows and engagement for 2 people that had a lot of content going on. After that, when 2020 rolled in, I understand how some people on the c-side of things will fall off. They probably had new interests and I think the same goes for that account. They were there at the height of it and learned how being a profitable blog works. So I wanna say that this fan was seasonal. To say that they “represent” all big name bxg blogs is totally unfair.
Next i wanna address the concept of profit and “cpfs giving money to big name accounts”.
The easiest way is engagement to a blogger’s post. It may not be me giving the money in my pocket to them literally but they get earnings from engagement & through ads/ affiliate links. This concept is not new to BXGs. It’s the same as any other influencers out there. So the accusation of spending money to big name accounts instead of supporting the boys — in this case is misleading.
You can argue that a regular person, even so/os fall in this trap when they engage with blatant anti accounts. When they comment and share those posts, they give them the engagement.
Now there are two other ways that bxgs give their actual money to these big name accounts.
1. Fansites. Those that share HQ photos and videos of them during events. How they make money aside from engagement is selling photo-books. What’s important to remember tho is there is an unspoken rule among these sites ( not just bxg ones ) that a huge part of the earnings will be spent on charity and buying endorsements by the boys. they post receipts. Not everyone of them is perfect and some have their own issues and closed down but that’s just how it goes.
2. Fan artists. The concept of fan art & merch have long been alive and is honestly one of the best things about fandom. It gives a chance to artists to make something and earn from it. I have to say that this is the more lucrative one cause the really popular ones have their products ( usually the dolls ) sell out so fast and have months of waiting list. The same fan sites, there is a rule for them to use the money for charity.
Here is a post I made before about some of those charities but that’s a very small list compared to the actual initiatives that were done for years.
As for supporting the boys, these accounts buy endorsements, magazines of them in the cover ( in bulk ), organize LED ads for their birthdays or fandom anniversaries, sponsor peripherals for bxg gatherings, host block screenings for movies etc.
Lastly, however someone spends the money they earned is none of anyone’s business. These people on the internet thinking it’s okay to gloat about how they are the “best fan” out there because of how much they spend on a celebrity is so crass. It’s like giving Yibo a gift and leaving all the tags on cause you want him to know exactly how much you spent on him.
I appreciate fans that do spend. I really do. It helps alot with their brand value and career. I personally buy merch and watch content on paid platforms. However it should not be a way to measure someone’s worth as a fan. There is no need to shame people who want to spend their money elsewhere and not XZ or WYB. This kind of toxic mindset is largely prevalent in c-ent fandoms that some international fans are adapting. If there is something that the CCP and I agree on, it’s that this practice shouldn’t be demanded of fans. The idea of “how dare you spend on something you like” ( whether it’s a product from a big name fan or whatever ) exposes whoever is saying it as that kind of brainwashed fan.
So anyway, participate in the fandom in a way that you are comfortable with. We all have different approaches on how we take part in it and there is really no need to keep receipts. ✌🏼

Honestly, if Leigh really wanted Alina to have an ending where she's sapped of her powers and decides to go back to her normal orphanage life, she shouldn't have decided that Alina should be the protagonist of a trilogy dealing with the genocide of a group of people who are being killed or worse because of their powers. We got 3 books of Alina not really wanting to do anything to help the Grisha (things get much worse for them after Darkling dies). Not to mention, we got that whole power is +
a corrupting influence, except Leigh mixed that messaging up with parts of the books where Grisha who didn't use their powers were wasting away and very, very sick (wasting sickness). Also we saw Grisha in Novyi Zem with a very limited, incomplete understanding of their powers in one of the Six of Crows books I think. The fact that Alina was healthier when she used her powers and then was demonized for having powers in the later books annoys me. The series would have been better without the weird romances and if the Darkling was the protagonist. Because he's the sort of protagonist a story like this needed. I don't think every single protagonist needs to be badass, but in a story about genocide and a corrupt monarchy and a complicated political landscape, an effective protagonist should want to learn about all of those things, and they should have a more active role in the story. Which the Darkling was like.
I don't think there's much to add.
Alina might've been a very good protagonist, if she didn't cling to her smallness so badly. Or if she were made to abandon it and instead of slipping back into obscurity, accepted her role of bringer of social change.
Her butchering at the end of TGT is just another piece into gruesome tapestry that is being a Grisha in Grishaverse.
Aleksander is a main character for completely different genre, but to be fair, so are the topics introduced in the books. Braindead YA audience isn't able to handle him as the wrong choice of love interest, can you imagine the drama if he weren't constantly shat on?
I've encountered another, slightly more palatable suggestion- writing S&B!Genya as the protagonist. She's clever, active, more situation-aware and willing to take drastic actions. On the other hand she never left Os Alta, or even the Palaces, so there's room for a little bit of naiveté in practical situations, learning and growth waiting for her in the big wide world.

OS - IT'S OVER
And I have like lots of questions 😮💨 Surely I'll forget something
And lots of sadness for the departed 😭
I haven't had time but I'd like to go back and re-read every time Violet "dreamed" something that wasn't hers.
A lot of second signets running around, Bodhi MUST have one himself 🤔 Oh, Aaric, thanks...? 😅 "Forbidden" signet that are not so rare in this generation, things must be really bad.
The Andarna arc: I was crying my eyes out when she decided to go, Violet is rightly catatonic... Something like two weeks later she's back 😶🌫️ Don't misunderstand me, I'm happy she is (Violet kept on having her second signet so the bond was gone but not really? 😵💫) but then why the whole drama in the first place?!?
I'm more than disappointed in papa Sorrengail 😤😮💨
I'm surprised that somehow Sgaeyl and Tairn - after bitching for the whole book about Xaden - decided to do something he suggested? We'll maybe know what that is in ages (😒) but I'm the end he turned again to save Sgaeyl - and the people he loved. That broke my heart, because it had been so hard to try everything to stall the progression 😭 of course he's nowhere to be found now, but if the missing dragon eggs are his doing, the Empyrean must know and "approve"? 🤔
Violet helped him with ??? The two of them got married consensually I suppose and she asked Imogen to erase her memory of it to protect Xaden and whatever he's doing... And now she can legally be in charge of Tyrrendor since she is the duchess via wedding 🤔
I don't know if I'm more sad or angry at RY for having them work so hard to stick together because of their love and then force everything to go astray 😢 I get she plans two other books but this is cruelty, your Honour 😤

Hello! This is the one who asked for tips on 12yo Brazilian OC.
Thank you so much for all the tips, you give me so many I don't even think of. I will re-read them later.
May I ask something else please? You gave me the titles for dramas and it's so helpful! I actually need them so I can familiarise myself with the country. Thank you.
This time, I want suggestions for Brazilian novels, so I can read how Brazilian people write about themselves. Do you have any recs for me? Preferably those who have English translation because...of course.
Maybe those which have drama and slice of life as genres, but anything is okay.
Drama/telenovelas for teenagers/adults recommendations are welcome too, so I can have the more mature POV. Also, recommending Brazilian Lifestyle Youtubers is great too if you know some!
Hello anon! I'm glad my answer was useful to you :)
Now, first, of all, I thought a little about some books and shows and movies to recommend you, but I also wanted to disclaim a very relevant aspect of brazilian media that you may not know:
Most of the media we consume here is foreign.
For starters, let's say that finding a fan of "national literature" how we call it is kind of unusual. Most of the hits we have here (Percy Jackson, godforsaken Harry Potter, Pollyanna, Pride and Prejudice, The Matrix, Disney movies, I could go on) are all from the US or other Northern countries. Brazilian media is highly americanized. Take that plus manga and anime and also recently korean dorama, little of what we have comes from here.
If you asked, say, a random young adult in the street to tell you about a good Brazilian book, they'd probably just know the Old Classics like Machado de Assis or Jorge Amado, the kinds of books we have to read for school to answer a test. Those very old, very famous books that use of an arcaic Portuguese that is really hard to understand, especially if you're just doing it for a grade.
Most people's favorite shows, favorite book series, favorite movies... they're mostly all from the US.
This is pretty annoying, to be honest, to not find any "famous" or popular brazilian books. Shows and movies have more luck, but it's still tough out there. Finding media that's really from here sometimes it's not even compensating, so mostly we just stick with what comes from the outside. So, even if your character is brazilian, I think it wouldn't be unreasonable for her to just watch a lot of USamerican shows, like USamerican movies and read USamerican book series.
Now, since we've taken that out of the way, I have here some media sorted by medium and target audience for your purposes! There may be really frustrating to find actual brazilian stories out there, but that doesn't mean we don't have them!
Books:
Um Milhão de Finais Felizes - English title: "A Million Happy Endings". Genre: Queer romance. Story about young gay adult who wants to write a book but can't bring himself to. If I remember well it's a coming of age story. Rate: I'd say it's a teen to YA story.
Enquanto Eu Não Te Encontro - Couldn't find any records of an English version. Rough translation: "While I Can't Find You". Description: Queer romance about a guy who meets a dude in a bar and they fall in love. They lose contact and the protagonist tries to let it go untill they finally meet again. Rate: Teen to Young Adult.
Os Karas - English title: "Karas Chronicles". Description: A book series about a bunch of teenagers who solve misteries and defeat bad forces. Has about 5 volumes, I think, but I'm not sure. Maybe more. Rate: Tween to Teen.
A Hora da Estrela - English title: Hour of the Star. Description: I haven't really read it, but it's some romance and this is a really classic one. Rate: I have no idea but I know adults like it.
Nó na Garganta - Couldn't find any record of an English version (which SUCKS because this is a really interesting slice of life). Rough translation: Lump in the Throat. Description: Slice of life-ish. Story about a young black girl that moves with her family to the countryside, in a town full of whiter and richer kids than her. She tries hard to make friends, find a way to have fun and deal with expectations at home. Rate: Tween
Luna Clara & Apolo Onze - I'm not sure if there is an English version, but Onze means Eleven if you wanna try your luck looking for it. The rest of the title should be about the same. Info: About a girl in North Desatino who is waiting for her father to come back, and she watches every day for a sign of him, who is said to carry a cloud of rain on his head at all times; on the South, a boy has a forever lasting birthday party, when a stranger brings rain inside his house and he decided to help him. Has some romance and is a story with non-chronollogical chapters and is really funky. But it's pretty cool. Rate: I'd say is for tweens and teens.
Any book from Coleção Vaga-Lume - it's a collection with many many stories for children and teens and I haven't read a lot of them but it was more popular, I think, around three decades ago. I read a few as a child and they are really fun, some mistery here and there.
Movies:
O Auto Da Compadecida - English title: "A Dog's Will". Info: This is probably the most classic movie that is out there. It is adapted from a play with the same name (in Portuguese, "auto" means theathre play) and is a comedy movie about two really poor guys; one who is sweet-tongued and mischievous, and the other who is always telling way less-convincing and absurdist lies. The story follows them getting in trouble and making more trouble to escape the first one. "O Auto Da Compadecida" got translated as A Dog's Will, but a more accurate translation would be "Holy Mary's Play". It's a really fun movie. Rate: Family/All ages.
Minha Mãe É Uma Peça - English title: "My Mom is a Character". Info: Another classic and very loved comedy about a housewife who, tired from her family, leaves her children with their rich father and rich stepmother and goes to her aunt's house, to complain about her life. It's quite a masterpiece and I think it has two sequels, but I can't say how good they are cuz I haven't seen them. Rate: Family/All Ages.
Os Salafrários - English title: "Get the Grift". Another comedy movie about two siblings running from the law and their complicated relationship. Rate: Family/All ages.
Tô Ryca - English title: "I'm Rich". Info: Yet another comedy movie (sorry, that's all i watch lmao since i'm not a big movie watcher) about a working class woman who, one day, finds out to have a huge inheritance from a recently dead lady who is apparently her grandmother. However, to earn the money, she must pass one test: To spend 30mi reais (a brazilian real is about 1/5 usd) in thirty days. Rate: Family/All Ages.
Alice Jr - Info: Queer comedy/romance about a trans girl named Alice who temporarily moves to a small town in the countryside; for as long as her father has to stay there for finishing a job, Alice must survive her (temporary) new life with new people, new friends, new enemies, and a catholic school. Rate: I'm not completely sure but i'd also bet For All Ages or Teens.
Movies with Lázaro Ramos - I'm not a big fan like my mom for example, but he's a famous actor who apparently did a lot of great movies, so you could also check them out.
Shows:
De Volta Aos 15 - English title: Back to 15. Info: I'm not really the target audience so I haven't really touched it, but overall is a show about a woman who by some sort of magic becomes 15 years old again. I'm pretty sure it's a highschool drama. Rate: Children and Tweens, I suppose.
Turma da Mônica: Cine Gibi - I don't know if there is any English dub or subtitled version but I'm confident there is. I mentioned Turma da Mônica (Monica n' Friends, for you) in the other post, but I didn't really explained what it is. It's basically a big comic franchise that's really really popular and had one director for what, 60 years? Now it's his gay son directing the thing but back to the plot, it's about four children in a neighbourhood that live some funky adventures with caricaturesque characters, leaded by the protagonist, Mônica, who has herculeous force and is known as the boss of the street. The franchise got a few episode adaptations, but the one I'm talking about is a collection of about ten episodes of short stories that follow the premise that all the HQs get in an animation-ator made by one of the reocurring characters, who is an inventor, and they all get together in the theathre to see it. They also frequently break the fourth wall. Rate: Children and Tweens.
Novellas (mostly for teens, children and young teens/tweens):
Chiquititas
Carrossel
As Aventuras de Pollyanna
Carinha de Anjo
and many many many many more. My classmates usually watch novellas for older people as well, like the 6PM one or the 8PM one which i have no idea which are, but if you want to look for them i have the impression that it won't be really hard. Although, be warned, their episodes are usually 1h long and the shows last like forever. Like One Piece or smth, idk.

DEADLINE: Why didn’t you call the series Wool, which is the name of the first book?
YOST: I’ll use this an example. When we told Rebecca it was going to be called Silo, she said, “Oh, thank goodness.” She said every time she’d tell people what it’s called, they would automatically pull at her shirt. Wool is a hard word to hear, and it’s actually a hard word to say. It looks fantastic graphically. Wool is a great word because the two Os in the middle, and the way the W and the L balance out, it just looks cool. A year and a half ago, I was speaking with Jamie Erlicht and everyone at Apple, and I said, “look, in the writers room, we think the show should be called Silo because we think wool is both hard to say and hard to hear.” Jamie said, “No, the first book is called Wool. And then they got a new head of marketing in, and he said, “It’s got to be Silo.” So it became Silo.
DEADLINE: I know it was important to kill off two people in the first episode, but did it have to be major stars like David Oyelowo and Rashida Jones?
YOST: That was the biggest, hardest decision of the whole deal. I wanted to replicate the experience I had when reading it, and Hugh wrote the first book, which is about the sheriff and his wife. He wrote that as a story. That was it. It was a standalone story through Amazon, and it just took off. It just became this viral sensation. People said they wanted more. Well, he killed off the two main characters! So then he came up with the character Juliette and then had her take over the story. We knew it was a risk to do a first episode that is essentially a prequel to the Juliette story, but ultimately it became thematic for the whole thing. There were a lot of fans who haven’t read the books who were still waiting for the sheriff to show up again, but it did establish that anyone can die, which I think adds to the tension and the thriller aspect of it. I do think that for people who’ve seen the Mission Impossibles, who have seen Dune and see Rebecca’s face, they’ll go “OK, I’ll stick with it to see what happens with her.” Also, she’s the face on the poster. I understand why previous adaptations did not want to start with a story that killed off the two main characters, but I felt that was part of the experience of the whole thing, and that part of it was fan service, and part of it was just me serving why I enjoyed the thing. Because I was going, “Wait a second, now what?”
