Still looking a little dinged up but much improved from the bent (and burst) corners that were. It'll take a book press to fix that block- which I don't own, so I think we're done for now. Spine text for point of reference. I'm tempted to build a slip cover for this down the road.

Far from perfect but the text block was completely detached when I received it. I think it looks pretty classy now. We shared this sweet scaleboard binding a few weeks ago and our conservation staff were horrified by the 1960s-era repair that was visible on the front cover. So here it is again, fresh from the lab, looking so much better! #FlashbackFriday

Here’s the text from the original post:

We love the decorated paper and scaleboard binding on our copy of John Witherspoon’s A Series of Letters on Education (New York, 1797).

Witherspoon, who was the president of Princeton College in 1797, was an avowed and determined disciplinarian. In a Series of Letters, he recommends parents “begin the establishment of authority” at the age of eight or nine months, and goes on to say “Do not imagine I mean to bid you use the rod at that age; on the contrary, I mean to prevent the use of it in a great measure, and to point out a way by which children of sweet and easy tempers may be brought to such a habit of compliance, as never to need correction at all.”

We find it interesting that the work was issued in such a tiny format, as though it were meant for the children themselves and not their parents. #MiniatureMonday

Thank you to @sobbookbinders @societyofbookbinders north wales and north west region for inviting me to do a cloth book repair workshop. It was a real joy to share skills with a very friendly and knowkedgable bunch of bookbinders. As always happens with book repair each book was different so we had a variety of techniques to cover including guarding pages, re-sewing, cloth jointed endpapers re-backing. Hello, Followers. Account Manager has been procrastinating on her assignments again. They are all due the night of the 16th, so I am hoping to “whip her into shape”. Imagine my surprise when she starts tearing this book up right in front of my eyes. Account Manager has done many strange things to procrastinate, but I thought this was the strangest of them all. I was worried for her sanity. Evidently she was not procrastinating, however, as repairing a book is one of her final assignments. Still.
