Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week. Catherine's library find is a picture book called Edmund Unravels, starring a cute little ball of yarn who likes to take adventures (and has his very own yarn version of helicopter parents).  Mentioned: This Target back-to-school ad. Terri's random recommendation is a recent edition of her Substack newsletter that lists the many books on her to-be-read list. If you're interested in celebrity memoirs, Hollywood behind-the-scenes stories, and quirky nonfiction, she's got something for you. Mentioned: A Gentleman in Moscow, Erma Bombeck. In the archives, we discussed car tech for parents (from 2019). In five years, the automotive industry hasn't advanced in the ways that we were hoping for. Next week's lineup:
Lost S1 E19, "Deus Ex Machina," on Tuesday, November 12
Shrinking S2 E2, "I Love Pain," on Wednesday, November 13
Weekly roundup on Thursday, November 14
Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

“‘Also I think Doug is a vampire.’ 'Um,’ Ophelia frowned. 'You mean, like, a metaphorical vampire?’ 'No, the regular kind.’” - Adam Rex, Fat Vampire 🧛🏻‍♂ Is there a nice way to say this book felt like a waste of time? I really wanted to like it - I mean it sounds so funny, right? A fifteen year old is turned into a vampire while he’s overweight? Vampire’s are always so perfect looking - this had so much potential to be awesome. The main character, Doug, is a selfish little asshole. He’s unkind and acts as if the world owes him something. And okay - vampire, but still, be decent. And while I dreaded every page of this book, I did like the female characters. They were fun, and strong, and didn’t fit into any stereotypes which I enjoyed. · · https://www.instagram.com/p/CAdvLfgAOCC/?igshid=12hyjh5mupdye

Which do you prefer: cookies or brownies? For me it depends entirely on my mood. Chocolate chip cookies are my comfort food. Ghirardelli brownies, though, are phenomenal. I only eat Ghirardelli brownies... all others fall short in comparison. . . . Has anyone else read The Goblin Wars? I love this cover and really enjoyed the books in this series. I read them all fast. They didn’t exactly turn out how I thought they would, but I wasn’t upset by them. I feel like these are an easy Halloween read. . . . #goblinwars #yabookstagram #yabooks #yafantasybooks #yafantasy #bookflatlay #bookstacks #bookstack #booktography #bookpic #bookpics #bookpick #bookclubstagram #bookclubs #bookishlife #bookishpost #bookishlove #bookbloggers #bookbloggerlife #bookblog #bookblogging #booksarefun #booksarefriends #halloweenbooks #bookaesthetic #bookaddict #bookaholic #booknerd #bookhoarder #bookcollector https://www.instagram.com/p/B39fU57g4P5/?igshid=1nh8pgb927htc

Black History Month: Contemporary Reads
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
An ode to Put the Damn Guns Down, this is New York Times bestseller Jason Reynolds’s fiercely stunning novel that takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother. A cannon. A strap. A piece. A biscuit. A burner. A heater. A chopper. A gat. A hammer A tool for RULE Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator? Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES. And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if WILL gets off that elevator. Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.
When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors, Asha Bandele, Angela Y. Davis (Foreword)
Now Adapted for Young Adult Readers
A poetic and powerful memoir about what it means to be a Black woman in America—and the co-founding of a movement that demands justice for all in the land of the free. Raised by a single mother in an impoverished neighborhood in Los Angeles, Patrisse Khan-Cullors experienced firsthand the prejudice and persecution Black Americans endure at the hands of law enforcement. For Patrisse, the most vulnerable people in the country are Black people. Deliberately and ruthlessly targeted by a criminal justice system serving a white privilege agenda, Black people are subjected to unjustifiable racial profiling and police brutality. In 2013, when Trayvon Martin’s killer went free, Patrisse’s outrage led her to co-found Black Lives Matter with Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. Condemned as terrorists and as a threat to America, these loving women founded a hashtag that birthed the movement to demand accountability from the authorities who continually turn a blind eye to the injustices inflicted upon people of Black and Brown skin. Championing human rights in the face of violent racism, Patrisse is a survivor. She transformed her personal pain into political power, giving voice to a people suffering in equality and a movement fueled by her strength and love to tell the country—and the world—that Black Lives Matter. When They Call You a Terrorist is Patrisse Khan-Cullors and asha bandele’s reflection on humanity. It is an empowering account of survival, strength and resilience and a call to action to change the culture that declares innocent Black life expendable.
Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles
When Marvin Johnson's twin, Tyler, goes to a party, Marvin decides to tag along to keep an eye on his brother. But what starts as harmless fun turns into a shooting, followed by a police raid. The next day, Tyler has gone missing, and it's up to Marvin to find him. But when Tyler is found dead, a video leaked online tells an even more chilling story: Tyler has been shot and killed by a police officer. Terrified as his mother unravels and mourning a brother who is now a hashtag, Marvin must learn what justice and freedom really mean.
Snapped by Alexa Martin
With the stakes this high, it’s no longer just a game for the quarterback in this romance by the author of Blitzed. Elliot Reed is living her best life—or pretending to. She owes it to her dad’s memory to be happy and make the most of her new job as Strategic Communications Manager for the Denver Mustangs. Things are going well until star quarterback Quinton Howard Jr. decides to use the field as his stage and becomes the first player to take a knee during the national anthem. As the son of a former professional athlete, Quinton knows the good, the bad, and the ugly about football. He's worked his entire life to gain recognition in the sport, and now that he has it, he’s not about to waste his chance to change the league for better. Not even the brilliant but infuriating Elliot, who the Mustangs assign to manage him, will get Quinton back in line. A rocky initial meeting only leads to more tension between Quinton and Elliot. But as her new job forces them to spend time together, she realizes they may have more in common than she could've ever imagined. With her job and his integrity on the line, this is one coin toss that nobody can win.

Evenings Booked // February Book Picks
Tumblr media
The snow just keeps falling. And falling. While we might enjoy taking ski turns by day, we love to turn the pages of a new book by night. Here are four of our picks for the month of February.
Truth & Beauty, A Friendship, by Ann Patchett // A modern-day telling of an authentic friendship, this memoir is an honest account of life and love. Patchett’s writing always captivates us and this New York Times bestseller is no exception. Plus, Patchett is co-owner of a local bookstore in Nashville - the epitome of loving and living local.
The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, by Jan-Phillip Sendker // A sweeping romance that takes you from New York to Burma, and the 1950′s to present day, this is one of Erin’s absolute favorite books. Don’t be fooled by the term romance here, there is also mystery, cynicism, family relationships, and a touch of mysticism. If you’ve read this one, then move on to book two in the series for more magic.
An American Marriage, by Tayari Jones // When a husband is arrested for a crime his wife knows he did not commit, their love become unmoored and their past starts to surface. A relationship between two soon becomes a complicated web of three, with many forces at play that are beyond their control. Award-winning and at the top of many acclaimed book lists, this is one title you should reach for this month.
The Queen of Hearts, by Kimmery Martin // We love entrepreneurial spirit, which led us to first time author Martin of Charlotte. This witty and smart novel is a fun peek into life as a physician, with all the complicated human drama that comes along with life as a mom. Told from two points of view, the pulse of this book beats right along, making it an easy pick.
Stop by your favorite local bookstore to pick up one of these titles. And tell us what you are reading this month!

“You guys could start calling me The Beast Boy.” - Teen Titans Beast Boy, Kami Garcia 🐍 I’m not a big DC fan, but I am crazy about the Teen Titans. Raven & Beast Boy are my favorites, so you know I was going to have my hands on this the day it came out. This story is so fun! And @_picolo ’s illustrations are just incredible. I’ve been a big fan of his casual Teen Titans series for a while and I’m so excited to get a second graphic novel of his work. · · https://www.instagram.com/p/CEwnRLOACuy/?igshid=1ezfixyprxnis

“There’s only one direction this can go, and that is straight to hell.” 📚🖤📚 Holy psychological thriller!!! Never have I read a book where the title is so fitting. The suspense, the characters, the way the plot unfolds. It is all exquisite. 🖤 Dark and twisty with a plot that will keep you uneasy and on edge with every page. It’s breathtaking and stunning and WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS GO GET THIS BOOK!!!! 🖤📚🖤 thank you @orendabooks for sending me a copy to read and review! Full review on my blog, link in my bio 👩🏼‍💻🖤👩🏼‍💻 #exquisite was the November #BookPick for @blackheartreads and man did they start their group off with a bang!!! There’s still time to grab this book before the discussion. If you enjoy suspense and thrillers with a mastery of psychology, you seriously need to read this book!!! 🖤📚🖤 I’ve spent my day reading and making wands with a dash of online shopping added in for good measure. It is Black Friday after all! But there was no way I was dealing with the insanity actual shopping required. I may be crazy, but even I have my limits 🖤 did anyone catch some crazy sales today???
