Quinton Peters was the golden boy of the Rosewood low-income housing projects, receiving full scholarship offers to two different Ivy League schools. When he mysteriously goes missing, his little sister, 13-year-old Amari Peters, can’t understand why it’s not a bigger deal. Why isn’t his story all over the news? And why do the police automatically assume he was into something illegal? Then Amari discovers a ticking briefcase in her brother’s old closet. A briefcase meant for her eyes only. There was far more to Quinton, it seems, than she ever knew. He’s left her a nomination for a summer tryout at the secretive Bureau of Supernatural Affairs. Amari is certain the answer to finding out what happened to him lies somewhere inside, if only she can get her head around the idea of mermaids, dwarves, yetis and magicians all being real things, something she has to instantly confront when she is given a weredragon as a roommate. Amari must compete against some of the nation’s wealthiest kids—who’ve known about the supernatural world their whole lives and are able to easily answer questions like which two Great Beasts reside in the Atlantic Ocean and how old is Merlin? Just getting around the Bureau is a lesson alone for Amari with signs like ‘Department of Hidden Places this way, or is it?’ If that all wasn’t enough, every Bureau trainee has a talent enhanced to supernatural levels to help them do their jobs – but Amari is given an illegal ability. As if she needed something else to make her stand out. With an evil magican threatening the whole supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she is an enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesn’t pass the three tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton.

List of Book series that HBO/Max (or any other streaming service) could adapt into a popular show/franchise instead of making another tired reboot

(I am aware that there was an Artemis Fowl movie and I have elected to ignore that abomination the same way we ignored the Percy Jackson movies. Maybe a series could redeem it too)

Hey friends! We've had a flurry of really excellent magical school books over the last five years or so that I have absolutely loved. I want to write a magical school story of my own soon, so I studied these books: what do they have in common? What are they doing differently from each other? How are they similar to older magical school books? How are they bringing a new twist to the subgenre?
Turns out I had a lot to say on the subject, and so I give you a blog post! Enjoy!

Currently Reading ‘Amari and The Night Brothers’ and it’s really good. Twelve year old me would have lost her mind if it had came out back then. I really enjoy Amari as an MC. She’s very strong and knows to stand up for herself but also very vulnerable. Can’t wait to see where she ends up

I found another winter themed picture on my phone so here we go. I'm posting it.
☃️
Are you listening to any audio books at the moment? I'm listening to Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I'm only 9% in but so far I really like it.

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 12
Tumblr media
The stethoscope: A Glitter and Sparkly Bling-style standard Ultrascope. It's very cute. Ultrascopes were my introduction to the world of fashionable stethoscopes, you know? But for everything I've listened to/with in the years since, Ultrascopes feel quite overpriced. I'm liking them less and less as time goes by. I don't feel like they're worth more than $40 or so. But I do love just about anything with glitter...just wouldn't have paid for this if I could time travel.
The book: Speaking of fantastical things like time travel, my last read was B.B. Alston's Amari and the Night Brothers, the first installment of what's to be a middle-grade fantasy series. The reader learns quickly that Amari is compassionate and kind but also quick to anger, and she has a few things to be angry about. She's bullied at school because her family is poor, and her older brother/best friend Quinton is missing but the police aren't very helpful, assuming he must have been involved in illegal activities and brought it upon himself. Amari and her mother seem to have reached an impasse until the tween receives an unexpected invitation to the same "summer camp" where Quinton spent many summers before his disappearance, and soon realizes attending this "camp" might give her some clues as to his whereabouts. And you might have already guessed--it's not really a summer camp but a "magic school" trope. But I'm not mad about the presence of this trope. It's a fun story with a lot of twists and turns and questions about who the bad guys are and what motivates them. Looking forward to reading the second in the series, Amari and the Great Game. The third book is forthcoming.
