Theon waits outside the club for Robb, but Ramsay gets a hold of him first

winterfell is one of my favorite of the castles bc its warm. both in a metaphorical and literal meaning. its built on natural hot springs and has hot water streaming through out the entire castle, protecting its residents both from the cold and people alike. its so warm inside that catelyn can open her windows in the middle of the night and still stay comfortable. even the glass gardens are warm enough for flowers to bloom and crops to grow in the long winters, feeding the keep. the people are warm too; everyone from the servants to the lord himself. Ned cared for his people and they loved him for that and took care of the Starklings in turn, risked their lives to save Bran and Rickon from the ironborn. Theon knows that if Bran and Rickon were to get away from Winterfell, the commoners themselves would protect the princes, hide and lie for them. and when Sansa builds Winterfell from snow and rocks and sticks in the Eyrie, it doesn't feel right bc despite the snow which covered it from winter to summer, Winterfell itself never was cold

The fact Jon and Theon didn’t like each other is kind of interesting, a lot of authors would’ve made them very close because what they have in common, i.e. trauma bonding about Theon quite obviously wanting to be a Stark, but is actually their hostage, and Jon wanting to be a ‘proper’ Stark but instead being a bastard Snow, but instead they both favour Robb as a brother despite being quite obviously jealous of him and his position as Ned’s heir. They both parallel each other when Jon dreams of being in the Stark cypts and thinking it’s not his place, and Theon going down to the cypts in adwd and thinking the exact same thing.

You could argue it’s more to do with their personalities not being compatible, but Theon and Robb are very different also. I think it’s more to do with the fact that both being at the bottom of the family hierarchy, or more accurately outside it, is what makes them resent each other.

Like from Theon’s perspective he he may think to himself ‘I may not be part of the family but at least I’m not a bastard’ but then he will see Jon and Robb behave like brothers, Ned treating Jon with affection, Jon getting a Direwolf, even if it is the ‘runt’. Whereas Jon may think ‘I may be a bastard but at least I am Ned Stark’s son, and Robb’s, Arya’s, Bran’s, etc brother’ but then he’ll see Theon being treated fairly by Catelyn, Robb and Theon’s friendship, and Theon being allowed to be part of the formal greetings of the King, and being allowed to sit a the high tables when they feast, and all this leading them to resent each other.

It is true that love him or hate him Theon is an asshole and downright mean a lot of the time, so some would assume that, if Theon being the elder had been kinder to Jon, then Jon would’ve liked him, but I don’t know, Jon may be kind, but he is also proud and I don’t know if his pride would’ve ever allowed him to like Theon Greyjoy.

I’m steadily working my way through the first ASoIaF book, it’s interesting having like a vague concept about what happens to these characters going in, it’s like a Greek tragedy lmao, I hear the chorus telling me upfront that Oedipus is going to kill his father and marry his mother before I even meet him.

Anyways, knowing what I know about Theon I’m gonna keep it totally honest with y’all- valid crash out.

Like I just got to the scene where Robb yells at him for killing the bandit threatening Bran and like- I’d also be sulking for days. If I had to live ten years of my goddamn life listening to people telling I should be grateful my kidnappers are kind to me while all of their internal monologues are just going “what a fucking freak. Why’s he always smiling so much?” I’d have killed someone by now. Kid has atomic level daddy issues and his entire villain arc could’ve been subverted by Ned Stark patting him on the head and calling him a good boy and maybe playing catch with him or smth

I have such a deep attachment to Theon. Ever since the show and even after I read the books, I couldn’t hate him. Yes in the books he’s a little asshole but still so misunderstood and just wanted to be loved. And after reading adwd where he was turned into Reek, I cried for the first time over a book. The dehumanization he suffered and all the torture just makes me want to hug him and heal him

Iron Islands naming conventions are soooo funny because on one hand you have the most viking-ass names that ever did exist you've got Stygg you've got Gelmarr you've got Harl Jorl Qarl you've got Ragnor. A good number of them overlap with Freefolk names (idk what to do with that information either). But then a small handful would better fit in a Jane Austen novel with how fucking posh they sound in isolation. This is a post about Tristifer Botley.
