As a long time httyd fan who has been heavily involved in the fandom since the first movie and who has spent years working in the animation industry, I’d like to share my thoughts on the new httyd movie. Keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion and it's completely fine if you disagree with me. I just want to say a little something about all this that really bothers me.
The core reason that Dreamworks and Universal made this film is that it’s a quick and easy cash grab for them. Thats it. They don’t care about telling a good story or making a “better” version of the original movie for fans or even having an accurate portrayal of the characters/story. It’s purely about money. They know that fans of the original film will go see this movie, whether it’s good or bad. And those guaranteed ticket sales are all that matter to the studios. And with Universal, it has the added bonus of being a cheap promotional and merchandising opportunity for the new HTTYD land in Orlando that opens around the same time that the film is premiering in theaters.
And to help the studios make even more money out of this, they are using non-unionized VFX companies around the world to make this film, so that they can get cheaper labor and push the artists to do more that would be against American union standards. The same thing has probably happened with the costuming and fabrication for the filming, hence why the costumes look un-weathered and the sets look cheap. They don’t want to pay for the extra time and effort that it would take to make the practical bits of the production look good.
On top of all this, Dreamworks has already announced that they’re shutting down all their in-house animation projects in favor of using AI and outsourcing projects to cheaper international non-union studios.
With all this in mind, I just can’t support this film and I will not be seeing it in theaters. And I hope that others will do the same.
The only way to stop all these horrible “live action” remakes (which are actually just realistically animated remakes) is to not buy tickets to see them. Money is all that matters to these studios, and if they don’t make any money off of it, then they will stop and try something different. Maybe they'll even go back to focusing on original stories!
That’s the power that we hold as audiences. Our wallets help drive the decisions that the executives make. So support unique storytelling and gorgeous cinematography in movies. Support indie films. Support animators as they're fighting for fair pay and better contracts. But don't support a mediocre shot-for-shot remake riding on the coattails of an already successful film.
And I just want to wrap all this up by saying I have absolutely no hate towards anyone that has worked on the new film. Toothless looks incredible and I know the artists and creatives involved in this project did the best they could with what they were given.
But I also know that those same artists have so many more brilliant ideas that they would’ve loved to be given the creative freedom to do. I just wish hollywood would be willing to take a chance and let them do it.

Shen Yuan getting transported into pidw isn't "the system punishing him for being a lazy internet hater," but instead representative of "step 1 of the creative process: getting so mad at something you decide to go write your own fucking book" in this essay I will
#svsss#scum villian self saving system#shen qingqiu#shen yuan#the fact that people think scum villain#-a series that examines and criticizes common tropes in fiction-#is somehow against criticism or being a little hater is wild to me#especially since shen qingqiu never gets punished for being a hater#heck- he's still a little hater by the end of the series#he mostly gets punished for treating life like a play and like he and the people around him are characters#(or in other words- he suffers for denying his own wants and emotions and his own sense of empathy)#I think some of y'all underestimate how much writing/art is inspired by creaters being little haters#like example off the top of my head-#the author of Iron Widow has been pretty vocal about the book being inspired by their hatred of Darling in the Franxx#I think my interpretation of Shen Yuan's transmigration is also supported by the fact that this series is an examines writing processes#side note- though i understand why people say Shen Yuan is lazy and think its a valid take it still doesnt sit right with me#i am probably biased because my own experiences with chronic pain and depression and isolation#but ya- i dont think Shen Yuan is lazy so much as he is deeply lonely and feels purposeless after denying parts of himself for 20ish years#like yall remember the online fandom boom from covid right?#being stuck completely alone in bed while feeling like shit for 20 days straight does shit to your brain#the fact that no one came to check on him + he wasn't exactly upset about leaving anyone behind supports the isolation interpretation too#+in the skinner demon arc he describes his life of being a faker/inability to stop being a faker now that he's Shen Qingqiu#as “so bland he's tempted to throw salt on himself” and “all he could do is lay around and wait for death” (<-paraphrasing)#bro wants to be doing stuff but is stuck in paralysis from repeatedly following scrips made by other people#another point on “Shen Yuan isn’t lazy” is just the sheer amount of studying that man does#also he did graduate college- how lazy can he really be#he doesnt know what hes doing but he at least tries to actively train his students#and he actually works on improving his own cultivation + spends quite a bit of time preping the mushroom body thing#+he's experiencing bouts of debilitating chronic pain throughout all this#but ya tldr: Shen Yuan's transmigration is an encouragement to write and not a punishment and also i dont think its fair to call him lazy

[ “SOMEBODY TOLD ME”]:
BREAKING MY BACK JUST TO KNOW YOUR NAME. SEVENTEEN TRACKS AND I’VE HAD IT WITH THIS GAME. A BREAKIN’ MY BACK JUST TO KNOW YOUR NAME—BUT HEAVEN AIN’T CLOSE IN A PLACE LIKE THIS.
— The Killers, Hot Fuss (2004)
Princess Rhaenyra’s insolence is wearing her stepmother’s patience thin. Queen Alicent is not ten years her senior, but even during her own sixteenth year, she cannot recall herself behaving so brazenly. She would never burst into courtly discussions in nothing but gilded armor and the underskirts of her riding leathers, awash in blood. (She would never be spotted in blood that was not her own, anyway. Alicent has never picked up a sword, not one that belonged to her.) Nevermind that Rhaenyra is attending to diplomatic affairs with bared teeth and scales, no—the crux of the matter is just that, her affairs. Rhaenyra is the Realm’s Delight, a beauty incomparable to any fair maiden, Alicent included. She indulges herself with appetite of a spoiled child, the confidence of man, and the pickings befitting only to her royal blood. Criston Cole. Daemon Targaryen. Harwin Strong. Laena Velaryon. She’s full of love, isn’t she? That selfish, foolish girl. What does Rhaenyra Targaryen know of love, of duty? She is a child in so many ways—she thinks killing makes her a man, thinks the throne is hers despite being a woman, thinks she can have her knight and her uncle and her protector and Laena Velaryon in one fail swoop. She’s wrong. She doesn’t know herself half as well as Alicent does. Alicent, who sees her for what she truly is, who wants to see all of her and more of her and none of her. Alicent has been stolen into the Keep by her own father—both of their fathers—but Rhaenyra is the key to this place, is the window to everything barred. Rhaenyra Targaryen has a dragon. Rhaenyra can fly.
That’s what Rhaenyra had promised her once, with her lips pulled back in a grin, exposing the white of her teeth like the violently radiant creature she was. “Perhaps when you grow tired of plotting against me, we shall ride on dragonback together,” she had said. The tease.
Alicent had yanked her into an empty corridor by the silk of her sleeve, ready to chastise her for her ill behavior. Conversing with the lords and ladies of the court at a feast was one thing, but chattering about her bloody encounters in battle over the pudding tureen were another. The lord at her elbow was going green. Alicent’s own face was likely red; her heart raced whenever Rhaenyra got like this. Alicent had never seen the battlefield—only seen battered men in dented armor and the slumps of corpses lined along dirt roads in the aftermath of war—but her own imagination terrified her like nothing else.
(Rhaenyra is better with a sword than half of the knights in Westeros, and more lovely than the lot. Her reign has not yet begun, but already the commoners flock to her—lured in by tales of her beauty and fine hair—and soldiers would follow her into battle. Alicent would not follow, but she would watch and bite her nails down to the quick.
She thinks of the figure Rhaenyra cuts in full armor, the heat in her gaze underneath the slots of her helmet. Alicent remembers the weight of her own hand in Rhaenyra’s—which was gloved—when the princess rode up to the spectators box and grasped it in her own, bringing Alicent’s knuckles to her lips. She thinks of Rhaenyra murdered in the sky, skewered with another man’s sword, plummeting to the ground, torn in half, streaking crimson across the clouds. Alicent would scream, or cry. She might laugh. She would throw herself from the window of her tower. Rhaenyra’s bloody exploits terrified Alicent for reasons she could not identify, and excited her for reasons she refused to.)
“I’d sooner be confined to the castle for the rest of my days than get on the back of that bloody lizard,” Alicent scoffed. Rhaenyra only tucked her hand over Alicent’s, where it was resting on her forearm. She flexed her fingers, moving to release her grip on the dark fabric, but Rhaenyra intertwined their fingers and held them fast.
“You’re confined already. You are already accustomed to such a thing. I know you. But—”
“But you forget yourself. You think you’re invulnerable, Rhaenyra. You don’t know who you are.” Alicent intends for it to be a sneer, but instead it comes out quietly, and too gentle for disdain. She can’t know. Rhaenyra is as trapped as she is, but they’re trapped together. They belong together. She belongs with Alicent.
“I am Rhaenyra Targaryen, Heir to the Iron Throne and all of Westeros. I am a dragonrider. I am—I am your daughter. In a way. Your sister, too. Your enemy. Your sword, your shield.”
“And what am I?” What else is left for me? Alicent wonders.
“My Queen. For now.” Rhaenyra cocks her head, and the gleam in her eyes burns like fire raining down. “When I am Queen, you will be my lady.”

I just found out I have 999 followers? And holy vegetable-that-no-one-dares-name, that is insane.
My very first httyd book drawings were from How to cheat a dragon's curse, so here is another from book 4. It's a little messy because it took an hour, but I had to do something for the occasion.

THE WAY OF ALL FLESH 《万人の途》
You need not hurry, We've got all the time in the world.
My memory has failed sadly of late.
He is violently pessimistic.
It is wildly unlikely.
There is all the difference in the world between the two.
make an unholy fuss about very little.
Dear me! What a sorry mess everything is in!
The painting is a rank imitation.
a gross mistake.
a crushing bore.
with no earthly reason.
be crass ignorance.
every trick in the book.
They have all the advantages in the world.
go native. go bust.
The proposal came one vote short of unanimous approval.
I can't reach the buttons on the back. Will you do them for me?
So many movies have had this plot that it has been done to death.
Things don't go so well in real life.
It will go hard with him if he is found out.
It makes no difference no matter which way the election goes.
some people still can go without paying taxes.
look full in the face.
The sun shone in our faces.
One and one makes one.
These make a pair.
make the passing mark.
The seal is missing on the document.
The lace on one of my shoes had god undone.
I wouldn't want to be quoted on this.
I'm not much on putting those things into words.
be short on imagination.
It seems he got mixed up on his instructions.
Who is going to take you up on your offer!
He erred grossly on that problem.
a toy balloon on a string.
a dog on a chain.
be a black mark.
He is the sort of man whose personal charm grows on you on acquaintance.
Wherever did you put?
It was a good joke, but fell flat on him.
The mood grew on me.
My mind was not on it.
be borne in on one.
Shame on you!
an experiment on animals.
It is too late to perform an operation on him.
You ought to be harder on him.
Acids act upon metals.
It is unfair on you.
His voice grates upon my ear.
The drinks are on me.
Do you know you are taking a great deal on yourself?
Don't tell on me.
She seems to have something on him.
play a neat trick on a person.
get die on a person.
They have nothing on us.
Age has begun to tell on me.
No use trying to pull such a trick on me.
be on trial.
He is unable to hold anything on his stomach.
The scene was on.
I lay awake thinking over it all last night.
I had to rack my brains over that problem.
She hesitated over her answer.
ride roughshod over the objection.
Don't pull that line on me.
pull a sanctimonious face.
He never pulls his rank.
We are running short of gas.
Time is running short on me.
One's devil's luck runs out.
Finally she ran out of patience.
The watch has run down.
let one's imagination run riot.
run short of topics for conversation.
That is not the way the world is run.
run a machine at a high voltage.
run a person on a lie detector.
leave a motor running.
He stands small chance against you.
Kids run a high temperature over nothing in particular and snap out of it.
investigate a matter to the ground.
criticize severely.
You are worn to a shadow.
boring to distraction.
It has been done to death.
The bag was filled to bursting with sugar.
What are you seeing?
They were killed to a man.
It is done to a turn.
There is another side to the coin.
There's not enough depth to the story.
There is more to it than that.
There was no jerk to his motions.
That is about all there is to it.
The words had an ironical ring.
Have you any clue to work on?
The brakes refused to work.
The machine was still in fine working order.
The plan worked remarkably well.
It is very well in theory, but will it work?
His reason ceased to work.
Flattery will not work with him
It might work and again it might not work
I'm afraid it won't work so well.
Our plan worked successful.
The trick won't work with him.
The handle doesn't work.
The warning seemed to work most effectively.
Her face worked fiercely.
The screw had worked loose.
work a spear through one's hands.
They will work you to death.
He worked on a smile that didn't quite come off.
There is no knowing how that will work itself out.
This problem will not work out.
The safe opened to the key.
a ticket to a movie.
exit to applause.
The medicine worked into the wounded skin.
Oh! I'm inside out!
You are unzipped.
No stopover on this ticket.
try to enter a country on an expired passport.
I'll come again when you are free.
The question is who will bell the cat.
The fact that he was sick was not very impressive to her.
You asked for it.
untie a tight knot.
The girl couldn't word her feelings well.
Does he really mean it? I wonder.
Let him do his worst.
a would-be kindness.
Did she agree with you?
Turn your face toward me.
I don't think I can do it,but I'll try.
What is true of them is equally true of you.
They trumped up a charge to put him in jail.
Think it over carefully before you decide.
What are you talking about?
He bothered me with stupid questions.
Can it really be mine?
Don't calculate on me helping you.
No one called my attention to it.
Watch when you talk about religion.
You have the advantage of me.
They shouted to the utmost of their strength.
She never gave utterance to her personal feelings.
There were very few passengers in the train.
How much use did you get out of the machine?
It's not us that tried to upset their plans.
There was a chasm yawning in front of us.
Let me see,where was I?
Where did the plan go wrong?
work out one's idea of one's role.
To live is to suffer.
This is playing with words.
know what you mean.
What do you see?
You ought to have been more careful.
You need not have come.
Who do you think you are?
I have no idea what the word means.
ARRIVE ON THE EDGE
YOU RECAPTURED KARNEL OF THE LOST ARTICLE
AND THE ORDER IS TOTALLY OVER.

I finally got why I love so much the "dragons are gone" ending in the books while I hate it in the movies:
The books set the dragons free.
The movies simply sent them away.
That's basically the idea but I had a vision yesterday at 3am so I will be getting into detail below the cut.
The books have a very strong message about slavery. Some would say that it is a concept that is only important within the context of the last five or four books, but the ones that have been paying attention to the saga as a whole knows that there are things happening in the background. You know, stuff like
People eating dragons
People stealing dragons from their families so
The dragons can serve the vikings
And they're expected to obey because
People threaten to turn them into bags.
That's mostly the first book.
Dragons are constantly showed as unsatisfied with the status quo trough out the books, some more annoyed with the vikings than others. We have complete monologues from different dragons before the war is even a possibility. Sincerely, when it happens, it feels natural.
The idea of freeing the dragons is not one that comes up in the last book, not even close. The first time it is considered an option is in book 9 (I think), and, by the time being, we've already stablish lots of concepts as slavery within human beings, the dangers of a war, how this could lead to the end of all and freeing the dragons is the only option.
It is fatalist to say the least, but it's not going out of nowhere. There is a lot of worldbuilding (more on that later), but it is also the right thing to do. By the time Hiccup is presenting the option, Cowell has made us root for the dragons to be free and wild and do whatever they want, even if what they want is to hide under sea for thousands of years. Or if they don't want, or if the want to but just not in that moment, they can do it.
Oh, yes, because they leave GRADUALLY.
It is a sad ending, but still manages to get as satisfactory because, yet again, we know this happens and the books remind us this will happen eventually every time they can. “There were dragons when I was a boy” is literally the first phrase in the saga.
And then we got the movies.
The movies never followed the books. Like, not very much. The writers decided that they wanted to tell a story of a broken relationship between a father and a son while using dragons, the heroic and prophetic aspects of the books were getting on the way of that and they scrapped the idea. So, no, you can't tell me the movies actually follow the books.
However, if you're very technical, you know the Hiccup we see in the movies resembles Hiccup I, the one that stopped the war between vikings and dragons in the books, stablishing an equal relation between the two races. And this idea of the movies being a prequel can work for the second and specially the first movie, disregarding the fact that there are no prophetic or magical elements at all.
But THW exist and... Exist.
Suddenly the writers and producers decide that they want to follow the books and want to get rid of the dragons, something that is completely against the message of the other two movies.
(I am just talking about the movies, the shows-books relationship is very different and I will someday make a post ranting about it)
The movies do NOT talk about the dangers of dragons being with vikings or how the vikings mistreat the dragons or how bad is slavery or anything like that. The second movie does, yes, but the second movie also sends a message about how people benefit of being with dragons. They have their dragons and they're strong because of that friendship. Being at war with one another only brings loss and suffering for both bands while being together promises an actual future. A bright future that no one imagined before the first movie and that now they cling to.
Dragons and vikings are friends and together cand do basically anything.
That's a very strong message, you know?
And you know what? The third movie decided that such a strong and important message about friendship should leave the franchise completely.
“Free the dragons” it's a concept that doesn't fit with the movies. They're not slaved, they're not away from wildness and, most importantly, they CHOOSE to be with the vikings in the first place. They are already equals, they can do what they want and, you know, they are with the vikings because they want to.
But no, let's do a movie about letting friends go as if it could actually fit in the saga.
(I know it could actually fit but the execution was terrible).
As I said before, the movies resembles Hiccup I befriending dragons and we know how it ends. And someone who has never read the books will go and say "well, it was bound to end that way, why are you mad?” I tell you the difference right now: there's 1000 years of difference between the befriending and the parting in the book, 1000 years in wich we witness the deterioration of said friendship (from being friends and equals to being slaves). That's no what happens in the movies. The films give us 6 years and the only deterioration is within Toothless' character and how they made him a horny dog.
The dragons shouldn't have leave. This was a whim from the writers that thought that ending both stories the same way would be cool. It isn't. At all.
Long story short, it doesn't fit thematically. The movies and the books have different themes with different concepts and different characterizations of the dragons. While the books got story building and present the theme's since the beginning, the movies get it out of no where ignoring the themes in previous works.
Anyways, go read the books they're jewels and the ending isn't as shitty as thw make it look

I've had this concept spinning around in my head of Ro being captured by the Neverseen and that's why she hasn't come back from killing Cadfael
and King Dimitar personally asks Sophie to find her and get her out so Sophie has to hide it from Keefe, Fitz, and even Sandor that she's figuring out where Ro is hidden and then go there and bring her back single handedly
and Ro and her are just gossiping the entire time they're sneaking around the hideout
Ro: so... about what we talked about last time...?
Sophie: we are not talking about that in the middle of a Neverseen hideout
Ro: but-
Sophie: shut up I'm trying to pick this lock
Ro: you never let me have fun

the more I read and reread the comics the more I realize that a lot of the fanon criticizers are just as bad as the fanon only folks, are we even reading the same books y'all are yelling at them to read????
not talking about people who are chill about criticizing fanon and avoiding what isn't their taste, talking about the ones who bash people and act like they're the only ones who understand canon while also having their own interpretation that's not only inaccurate but meanspirited
like tumblr specifically has a problem with overcorrecting, both with fandom and real life discourse, I know that
but goodness y'all both need to read lonely place of dying because that did NOT go down the way some of y'all are saying it did
