Day 25: #mayvinylchallenge :  Your Favorite Cover Song + The Original Release On this challenge, I bend the rules ever-so-slightly, as I own my favorite cover, but I do not own the original.  However, it is too dope to not be represented. When covers are concerned, you get either a full on carbon rendition of the original, or some type of traditional rendition peppered with modern elements, often augmented with personal artistic twists.  Then there's the rare cover that defies tradition, takes the road map of the song, rip it to shreds and figures it's own path. For my duckets, the song that does the latter with amazing proficiency is the stellar cover of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", by DEVO, as displayed on their debut LP, "Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" (1978). The song simply takes the lyrics and the famous 10-note theme, boils it down to 3, and subverts it into a herly-jerky patchwork of art-rock funk.  Kicked off by one of the strangest drum patterns ever committed to tape, a muted guitar holds as the glue while the bass steps up front as the primary lead instruments, alongside a relentless 8-note guitar/synthesizer sequence.  Add the manic vocals of Mark Mothersbaugh and you have essentially a brand-new song, with some ultra-familiar lyrics.  When played for Mick Jagger for final approval, he reportedly strutted around the room, doing his trademark moves while exclaiming "I like it!".  Classic. There is no other reason that I don't own the original outside of the fact that I haven't gotten to grabbing up Stones records yet.  But in due time, people. From start to finish, and even the classic 1978 music video...I am a true Spudboy and this song remains my favorite cover. Toast anyone?
