border collie or border collie 🤪
HMM WHAT A CHOICE. ok so don’t take this personally (bc i know i follow a lot of bc people on here somehow) but i’m not.... super fond of border collies. i think they’re probably great dogs to the people who own them but as a 3rd party (whether at a dog park or a trail or the vet or whatever) they always seem a bit unpredictable... like, i feel like they tend to go 0-100 very quickly when it comes to interacting with both dogs and other people. (and why are they always off leash?? i dont care how smart they are, if we’re in a place with leash laws leash them and stop them from hard-staring my dog pls!) but i know the people who love them LOVE them so i’m sure if i had a puppy i’d be converted into the BC cult pretty much immediately lol. they’re very pretty and i am constantly amazed by how versatile they are.
also i think they’re probably smart enough that once they realized how boring i am they’d poison me in my sleep and i can respect that.

what do you think of hurtta's trail pack? do you think it's comparable to a pack from ruffwear?
I don’t have any experience with Hurtta items, but it’s a good looking pack for the most part, every pack has pros and cons.
The pannier shape is rounded like Ruffwear's packs and is angled so the widest part of the pannier leans the weight towards the shoulder. It is waterproof and the panniers are removable from the harness which is really helpful. I think the chest plate is a bit wide for my personal preference, I think it could be somewhat restrictive if it wasn’t fit perfectly to the dog, but it seems like it is VERY adjustable based on how many adjustable straps I can see on the harness and it is still a y-front so that is nice.
The handle is large and easily accessible which is great, I find Ruffwear’s can sometimes be annoying to grab and Wolfpack’s and Non-stop don’t really have good handles if any at all. There are also some photos where the fit doesn’t look as preferable, but that could be an adjustment error on the owner’s part.
Fit looks nice here:
Tumblr media
But it looks awful here:
Tumblr media
But again I think that is an adjustment issue, not necessarily a pack issue (harness looks too large on dog above).
I think its big downfall is it only comes in two sizes so only a limited number of dogs are going to be able to wear the pack. It also means that fit could be good for the dog harness wise but pannier size might be very big or too small overall. I see some photos where the bags look very sizable and others where they look tiny, so that could be a big difference between the two sizes.  But its a good option for those looking for a neutral colored pack. I’m not mad at it.

thoughts of nefja's trick repertoire? (most useful? cutest? hardest to learn? easiest to learn? etc.)
Most useful: Accio (bringing me stuff) It’s not 100% because she doesn’t like holding stuff but she's ok with carrying it for a certain amount of time.
Cutest: Waving If she’s not in the mood, she’ll do it but she’ll complain the whole time.
Hardest to learn: Meerkat (sit pretty) This girl is too lazy to properly use her muscles.
Easiest to learn: jump on things This dog just loves being somewhere high up on something and watching the world around her.
All-time favourite: jump on my arm For the reason above. Even better when I put her on my shoulders.
Most useless: Mops (press your nose against smt) It’s just useless. It looks dumb but it makes people laugh.
Most recent: Ta-da (take a bow) She’s obsessed with it tbh. When I have treats on me and tell her to lie down she’ll do a quick bow before actually lying down. It’s a bit annoying.
Send me “thoughts of ______” asks 💕

JUST KIDDING ok bearded collie or west highland terrier
oh god more dogs with scruffy faces! beardies i believe i’ve heard of having some pretty serious temperament problems? i’m not sure if it’s widespread or just certain lines but i know i’ve definitely read discussions about them having pretty serious resource guarding/aggression issues. i’m not normally a terrier person but most of the westies i’ve met have actually been pretty lovely dogs so in this case i think i will actually pick terrier over herder, which i never thought would happen.

congrats on the third pubby!!!! i'm so excited for you guys ❤️ i hope that all the pups establish their new dynamic quickly and easily!
Thank you! We’re really excited too! I think he will transition quickly, unlike the last time we added a new dog (Zombie) he does not have anxiety issues. His temperament is very solid and polite apparently.

cadvan's top five favorite sport/training moments/activities? tbh just tell us more about cadvan in sports
Hah!
1) Parkour is probably his top favourite. It’s no secret that I’ve heavily used it to build his confidence (nervy over-sensitive dog ftw…). And as a result he now gets super excited when it’s time to do any of that sort of thing. I’ve just this week started teaching him the ‘sendaway to circle a thing either left or right’ movement. He understands the general concept now from a couple of quick sessions in the garden with a cone, so our walks are currently full of me looking for things I can safely use to proof the cues. Turns out finding suitable things in suitable locations is harder than you’d think. Gravestones are too difficult at this point in time, for example, lmao.
2) Bikejor. Run run run run runnnnn. Fast zoom leggie go go hello muscles. Cad loves it so much. Yes I do have the summer itches. We’ve been working to build endurance and a lot of his food changes over the winter/ spring were to do with him not having enough puff for longer distances (3-5k). But for training purposes I actually do a la steeplechasers and do hard and fast interval training with him. Not least as that’s what I have access to on my doorstep where I now live. And he gets sniffs in the middle as his reward, which he also adores/
3) Canine conditioning stuff. I sort of introduced some of these movements initially outside as a parkour thing last year. Then had a break while I moved house and such. And then restarted inside. As a result he has good associations with it? So many tail wags honestly I’m glad that tail wags are not like heartbeats where you only have so many before the thing dies because otherwise Cad’s tail might be due to fall off soon.
4) Activities you say…. does chasing rabbits count? He is not technically allowed to do this, but by god he loves it. He has also chased hares on a couple of occasions *cough*. His recall training around them has got worse since moving here as we come across them less often, so harder to keep as a current skill. It’s definitely one of his favourites, if very much not mine…
5) DOING HIS NAILS. He does his nails on a scratchboard and it’s his favourite thing. It’s a really easy way to cheer him up if he’s feeling down for whatever reason (did I mention overly sensitive?). Had some sandpaper issues for the past 5-6w or so though, so his nails have got long again in the meantime. So we’re back to doing them every day rather than 1-2x a week as we’d worked it up to before (with regards to backing the length up).

For @boofblr, the border collie! Alas, the AKC book did not have them in it, except as a brief mention.
“The border collie is descended from reindeer herding dogs brought to Scotland by the Viking invaders. These dogs were later crossed with the Valee sheepdog.
[...] This is a hardy, agile, untiring sheepdog, capable of mastering any type of herd.It is said that the border collie has an eye that can hypnotize cattle.”
-- Simon & Schuster’s Guide to Dogs, 1980
“Very little is known about the Border Collie’s history, except that it traces back to the 1800s. Originally called Colly, after the Colly sheep, the Border Collie may be a mixture of the Scotch Collie and the Bearded Collie. The integrity of this working breed was almost destroyed when it became a favorite of the English gentry in the 19th century. Yet despite the tendency at the time to transform the dog into a pet, some breeders strove to maintain its working abilities.
The Border Collie was registered by the United Kennel Club in 1961. Although the American Kennel Club does not include the breed in its stud registry, it is part of the AKC miscellaneous class.”
-- Harper’s Illustrated Handbook of Dogs, 1985
