A year of songs (2024 music recap)

I'm a bit late but I've decided to write down, just like last year, a few of my musical discoveries.

I'm writing this as I spent most of 2024 : listening to Amen Dunes' Freedom. It feels strangely and sadly fitting that I started really listening to the band in early spring, got to see them live in July, and finished the year by learning that the project is over. As it truly was the soundtrack of my year, I feel relieved that I got to see them before it was too late (and hear Miki Dora live), curious about future music, but mostly sad that it's over just when I was starting to cherish those songs.

Another band that got me wondering how I could have lived my life for years without knowing their songs, and feeling changed now that I do, is Bonny Doon. Unlike Amen Dunes, it was a slow burn : after seeing them live in September, their songs stayed on my mind, until I started turning to them automatically for comfort (just like Kevin Morby's catalogue had soothed me in 2023). Listening to my Bonny Doon playlist while on a double-decker bus crossing London was perhaps the best moment of that trip. I still think regularly about the narrator of I see you reciting a text from his mom, emojis included.

Special mentions to : Bill Ryder-Jones (for breaking my heart repeatedly), Swim Deep (there's a big star outside is the most perfect record of the year), the Golden Dregs (whose newsletter is a delight), and Pop Crimes.

Boring Beyond Belief

This is an odd little wine, and loyal followers know what a huge fan I am of these original bottlings. But this is an weirdly-plain little thing.
