we're back! the first show of the new year is airing on wlur at 4pm this afternoon!

no love for ned had the distinction of being the last original program to air on wlur in 2020 (see below) and the first to air in 2021! we're sticking with our fall theme for at least another week (or so) because i just don't feel done yet.

COOL STUFF: Against Me!, Others Join For Hugs for Chelsea

What do you get when you combine Against Me! with Tom Morello, Michael Stipe, and Anti-Flag? How about when you add in Amanda Palmer, Talib Kweli, Graham Nash, and Thurston Moore? Well, friends, you get Hugs for Chelsea – a collaborative effort featuring more than thirty bands and artists laying down tracks in support of Chelsea Manning.

For those who may not know, in 2013, Manning was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison after pleading guilty to providing hundred of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. However, at the end of his Presidency, Barack Obama commuted her sentence. She left jail a free woman for the first time today, May 17, 2017.

The proceeds for this album will go directly to Manning to cover living expenses and to help her resume her life. The album can be purchased from the link below, and there is also a GoFundMe page that has been set up for Chelsea Manning.

Michael Stipe has said (of Manning): “She’s been through so much and she needs our support. [Proceeds from the album will] help cover her basic needs as she transitions out of seven years of incarceration.”

the difference between Unwoman’s “Saviors” & Bonfire Madigan’s “Lady Saves” is the difference between telling and showing, respectively (just saying “I am not a diversion from your hero’s journey / I have my own monsters to slay / Not a pretty toy to add to your collection / I have my own princess to save” versus actually writing a song that comprises a narrative about that slaying & saving and figuring that the audience will understand the subtext here & why that’s ‘subversive’) and I think that the latter song is much more effective for that reason

I love Unwoman but sometimes I think that her songs about gender are like… rather heavy-handed. but then I remember what her band name comes from lmao so I guess it figures

Because it’s tough being “radical” all the time unless you’re really well organized: the avant-garde-leaning cellist, pioneering mental health activist, and acclaimed singer/songwriter Madigan “Bonfire Madigan” Shive has just announced a new, comprehensive Bandcamp page compiling her entire catalog as Bonfire Madigan, thus making it all available in one convenient place on the internet for the first time. The epic page includes 13 collections of music, including several that had been either previously-unreleased, previously unavailable digitally, or out-of-print entirely. And you can buy the whole lot for $61.60 — which includes a cool 20 percent discount. (FYI, It doesn’t include Madigan’s original recordings with the Riot Grrrl group Tattle Tale, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for those.
