Listen/purchase: When I Survive by When I Survive
‘When I Survive’ is a musical compilation and project necessitated by over 400 days of genocide in Gaza. As winter arrives for a second time and as famine sets in, our Palestinian brothers and sisters need our support more than ever. The funds raised from this music compilation will go to two friends from Gaza City, Yahya Al Hamarna who is now displaced in Khan Younis, and Yousef Abdellatif who is now displaced in Nuseirat. 2 million people are being subjected to unimaginable cruelty at this very moment, with many of them fundraising in the hopes of rebuilding their lives or escaping the warzone. Every single one of us has an obligation we must uphold: to engage with their campaigns to the best of our capacity, to share their stories, to voice our solidarity directly, and to donate where we can. We cannot simply watch as onlookers. There are rumours that the Rafah Crossing, which has been closed since the spring, may reopen in the coming days. Now is the time to make your voices heard, demand the crossing is reopened and donate to individual and family fundraisers for Palestinians, ensure they have the means to survive this. December 1, 2024 Thank you to all the musicians who have contributed to this compilation and thank you to SPAF Collective for creating the beautiful artwork. Your solidarity speaks volumes. Free Palestine. https://whenisurvive.bandcamp.com/album/when-i-survive

am Mohamed samara paletinian live in belgium I am running a fundraising campaign for the family of my brothers Mahmoud and Alaa in Gaza .
We appeal to your generosity and kindness to support a family in Gaza in their journey towards safety and stability. The family, comprising thirteen members including parents and children, has faced unimaginable hardships due to the ongoing conflict. With their livelihood destroyed – their sports club, once their sole source of income, was tragically bombed – they are now in dire need of financial assistance to leave Gaza and seek refuge in Egypt.
Each person's passage out of Gaza costs $5000 USD, and with such a large family, the total cost is substantial. The family members include Mariam, Jana, Lamees, Iman, Shahd, Mustafa, as well as my nephews Layan, Kareem, Mahmoud, and Mohamed, in addition to the parents. They have lost everything they had, and their situation is desperate.

COOL STUFF: Against Me!, Others Join For Hugs for Chelsea
What do you get when you combine Against Me! with Tom Morello, Michael Stipe, and Anti-Flag? How about when you add in Amanda Palmer, Talib Kweli, Graham Nash, and Thurston Moore? Well, friends, you get Hugs for Chelsea – a collaborative effort featuring more than thirty bands and artists laying down tracks in support of Chelsea Manning.
For those who may not know, in 2013, Manning was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison after pleading guilty to providing hundred of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. However, at the end of his Presidency, Barack Obama commuted her sentence. She left jail a free woman for the first time today, May 17, 2017.
The proceeds for this album will go directly to Manning to cover living expenses and to help her resume her life. The album can be purchased from the link below, and there is also a GoFundMe page that has been set up for Chelsea Manning.
Michael Stipe has said (of Manning): “She’s been through so much and she needs our support. [Proceeds from the album will] help cover her basic needs as she transitions out of seven years of incarceration.”

TAMERA MOWRY-HOUSLEY TAKES A BIRTHDAY TRIP WITH BEST FRIENDS KRYSTAL JOY BROWN AND LYNDIE GREENWOOD IN ‘GIRLFRIENDSHIP,’ A NEW, ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING OCTOBER 1, ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
Part of the Network’s “Fall into Love” Programming Event
Brad James also Stars
Directed by Keshia Knight Pulliam
STUDIO CITY, CA – September 19, 2022 – Tamera Mowry-Housley (“The Santa Stakeout,” “Sister, Sister”) Krystal Joy Brown (“The Equalizer,” “One Royal Holiday”) and Lyndie Greenwood, (“Sleepy Hollow,” “Being Erica”) star in “Girlfriendship,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, October 1 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel, as part of the network’s “Fall into Love” programming event. Brad James (“Outer Banks,” “A House Divided”) also stars. Keshia Knight Pulliam directs.
Samara Williams’ birthday turn-up is almost held up when she learns she’s finally being considered for a big promotion as Director of Finance. But her best-friends, Eva (Brown) and Renee (Greenwood), are dead set on whisking Samara away for a surprise girls’ trip to Charleston. However, a booking mix-up sends the girls on a back-to-nature “rewilding” retreat instead of the fun-filled vacation they’d planned. The “Rewilding Woman Retreat” is led by Ariella (Samantha Beaulieu, “Queen Sugar,” Bad Moms), a descendent of the Gullah Geechee people of Edisto Island off the South Carolina coast. Ariella helps these girlfriends uncover their true nature by getting back to nature through the alluring charm of the Island. For Samara, the island isn’t the only attraction. When she meets Kareem, a handsome Gullah doctor with a secret dream of becoming a chef, Samara starts to listen to the call of her own inner artist and finds herself painting again for the first time in years. Before the girls return to the mainland, learn that there are no accidents and that that they are exactly where they need to be.
“Girlfriendship” is from Hallmark Media LLC. Daniel Lewis is executive producer. Keshia Knight Pulliam directed from a script by Jesseline Barry.

A case of the Palestinian blues
Tumblr media
Untitled, from the series 'Islam Played the Blues' by Toufic Beyhum.
“For Kareem Samara, a British-Palestinian multi-instrumentalist, composer, and sound artist, it was naseeb — meant to be. One day in 2020, American-Palestinian filmmaker and music producer Sama’an Ashrawi messaged asking him to play ‘Baby, Please Don’t Go,’ an American blues standard, on the oud. Ashrawi was curious what the blues would sound like in the quarter tones of the Middle Eastern instrument. Minutes later, Samara sent him a recording of the tune. ...”

Over one hundred artists write on Trump and Jerusalem
Tumblr media
Image: Ahmad Gharabli / AFP The Guardian reports (10th December) President Macron’s comment that recent US moves on the status of Jerusalem are a threat to peace. They are much more than that.
In recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Donald Trump seeks to achieve through a declaration what Israel has been trying to do for fifty years through force of arms: to erase Palestinians, as a political and cultural presence, from the life of their own city.
The Palestinian people of Jerusalem are already subject to municipal discrimination at every level, and a creeping process of ethnic cleansing. In addition to the continuing policy of house demolitions, in the last fifteen years, at least thirty-five Palestinian public institutions and NGOs in occupied East Jerusalem have been permanently or temporarily closed by the occupying forces. Cultural institutions have been a particular target.
At the same time Israeli authorities and entrepreneurs have spent millions in clearing Palestinian neighbourhoods to create ‘heritage’ projects that promote a myth of mono-ethnic urban identity, said to stretch back 3000 years.
We reject Trump’s collusion with such racist manipulation, and his disregard for international law. We deplore his readiness to crown the Israeli military conquest of East Jerusalem and his indifference to Palestinian rights.
As artists and as citizens, we challenge the ignorance and inhumanity of these policies, and celebrate the resilience of Palestinians living under occupation.

News: Tse Tse Fly Middle East London Debut
Tumblr media
The music promoter and community arts organisation Tse Tse Fly Middle East will be making its London debut at IKLECTIK on Saturday 9th September. The night will feature a curated selection of experimental films, a Q&A with Tse Tse Fly founder Simon Coates and live performances from Kareem Samara (pictured), Dushume and Sonic Imperfections affiliates Tonal Liberation Army.
Formerly based in Dubai, Tse Tse Fly has been curating events that showcase experimental music from across the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. Operating since 2015, the organisation had found it increasingly difficult to continue working in the UAE and relocated to the UK in the summer of this year. The evening will support five charities and organisations that focus on human rights and censorship issues: FORWARD UK, Labour Behind the Label, Amnesty International, Index On Censorship and the International Labour Organisation.
For tickets and more information visit the venue’s website. Ilia Rogatchevski Originally published by Backseat Mafia, 7 September 2017
