Listen/purchase: When I Survive by When I Survive

‘When I Survive’ is a musical compilation and project necessitated by over 400 days of genocide in Gaza. As winter arrives for a second time and as famine sets in, our Palestinian brothers and sisters need our support more than ever. The funds raised from this music compilation will go to two friends from Gaza City, Yahya Al Hamarna who is now displaced in Khan Younis, and Yousef Abdellatif who is now displaced in Nuseirat. 2 million people are being subjected to unimaginable cruelty at this very moment, with many of them fundraising in the hopes of rebuilding their lives or escaping the warzone. Every single one of us has an obligation we must uphold: to engage with their campaigns to the best of our capacity, to share their stories, to voice our solidarity directly, and to donate where we can. We cannot simply watch as onlookers. There are rumours that the Rafah Crossing, which has been closed since the spring, may reopen in the coming days. I've slightly fallen off the radar in recent weeks (been sort of on holiday, sorry!), so to make up, here have 7 songs this week!

This week, I have for you one of my top albums of 2024, punky rock from Dublin band Sprints, Irish cult indie rock/pop icon Orla Gartland (who also has a song with Declan McKenna on this album that is also quite catchy), some Canadian pop punk from Jules Is Dead, Canadian jazz musician who so easily moves from jazz to RnB to indie to rock, Yves Jarvis, London pop musician debutante, Chloe Qisha, Welsh rapper Sage Todz, whose version of Yma O Hyd (O Hyd) brought a Dafydd Iwan 60s protest folk classic up to speed in time for the 2022 Welsh Euro qualifier games. If you like his cover though, check out his latest original song Rhedeg (Run). Then there’s some catchy indie rock from London’s The Great Leslie, who are also supporting Franz Ferdinand on one of their UK dates next year!

Inspired by a recent post from Deutsch-blr that Germany is never gonna win Eurovison but always going to qualify and they should just take advantage of that three minute captive audience to go nuts.

UK should do the same. Or rather, take off the trench coat and have the four nations take it in turn to send something in.

A Welsh entry in actual Welsh. Have Dafydd Iwan sing the sequel to Yma O Hyd or something. Video accompaniment is drone footage of lights strapped to sheep which are herded into patterns.

A Scottish entry in broad Scots to make Robert Burns proud, all in tartan and woad with a bagpipe solo. An ode to the haggis or possibly death to midges.

NI's entry can't decide if it's British or Irish and after weeks of tense talks, we just get a power ballad homage to Love Love Peace Peace.

England? Morris dancers as your backing troupe. Jarvis Cocker out of retirement to sing the thing. A giant maypole taking centre stage. Someone in a Jack in the Green costume does a violin solo, bonus if they're not white. Song title is 'Everybody Hates Us But At Least We're Not The Yanks'.
