SEATTLE, Wash. — Boeing factory workers in Puget Sound have been on strike for 18 days after rejecting a tentative contract offer from the company. And now—they are at risk of losing their company-paid health benefits. According to the company’s website, union members who return to work during the strike on or after October 1, active health and insurance coverage will be reinstated. Boeing said employees who lose coverage can continue benefits at their own expense through COBRA. Workers will receive a COBRA notice within 14 days of their loss of coverage. On Friday, union leaders announced that contract talks “broke off” with the company after their latest bargaining session. In an update posted on social media, a regional district of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said that Boeing “would not engage substantively” on key issues important to members — such as higher pay — and refused to budge on restoring a defined-benefit pension that was dissolved about a decade ago. IAM District 751 says that no further negotiation dates have been scheduled following Friday’s session with mediators. However, the union says it remains “open to talks with the company, either direct or mediated.” One week ago, Boeing issued what it is calling its “best and final” offer. The deal included pay raises of 30% over a four-year period, which is up 5% from the deal that union members rejected when they voted to strike. The union’s original demand was for 40% over three years.

The strike comes after the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers announced that 94.6% of union members voted to reject a proposed contract from Boeing. The deal would've included a 25% pay raise over four years, much lower than the requested 40%.
This is expected to halt the production of aircraft in Washington state, where most of the union members are located.

By Stephen Millies
The 33,000 Boeing workers on strike since Sept. 13 are fighting a corporate giant with nearly $78 billion in sales last year. While strikers are concentrated in the Seattle metropolitan area, workers are also picketing in Portland, Ore., and Southern California.
Ninety-four percent of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) members voted to reject Boeing’s meager wage offer that would barely keep up with inflation.
They also want their pensions back, which were stolen from them a decade ago. Instead of being guaranteed a fixed amount of money every month when they retire, Boeing workers had 401(k) plans foisted on them.
These schemes guarantee nothing. With them, workers’ retirement income is subject to the casino capitalism of the stock market.

anyone else notice how a lot of real power has been returned to the modern equivalent of the priestly caste after having spent about two centuries in the hands of industrialists and landowners, returning to a social order resembling feudalism more so than early capitalism ?
#i think brokerage(/private banking) severed the money = power connection that had existed from like 1820-1930#a hundred years ago they could mow down a hundred workers without much consequence and now boeing can hardly off a couple whistleblowers#sad !#*severed -> weakened but you guys understand you're all smart cookies

Thsu is really important and shouldn't be ignored or looked over, these workers have been underpaid and without health insurance for some time now. What's worse is that people will demonize them for the crime of understanding the value of their labor and wanting better, as usual those people view workers from industrial manufacturers to service workers to be invisible or inhuman beings that do stuff for them. If anything I'm lucky Boeing has an awful reputation right which might sound strange but hesr me out, with everything going on with the suspicious deaths and widespread visible safety failures you'd look really bad defending Boeing in this strike given their current reputation, though you'll always have corporate stooges who love the taste of leather in their mouth. Dontate to the strikers if you can and promote the news regarding it, the more eyes and ears the better, don't let this simply fade from the news cycle!!!

Reuters: Boeing and Seattle-area union delay start of contract negotiations
Jan 22 (Reuters) - Boeing and its Seattle-area machinists union have delayed the opening of contract negotiations until early March as the company deals with the grounding of the 737 MAX 9.
Formal negotiations were set to begin in early February and were pushed back at Boeing's request, said the union on its website.
Both Boeing and its largest union — District 751 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers —have been named as parties of an ongoing National Transportation Safety Board investigation into midair cabin panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines (ALK.N), opens new tab MAX 9 earlier this month.

"Boeing has accused the Machinists union of failing to bargain in good faith in an unfair labor practice filed Thursday, as the ongoing strike enters its fourth week.
In a charge filed with the National Labor Relations Board, Boeing said the union had engaged in “regressive bargaining [and] surface bargaining” and accused the union of misrepresenting the terms of the deal and the status of negotiations to union members and the public. Boeing also said the union failed to “bring representatives to the bargaining table with the authority to reach an agreement.”
The charge comes after a two-day bargaining session ended with Boeing withdrawing its latest contract offer and both parties accusing the other of refusing to negotiate. After talks broke down Tuesday, the Machinists union said Boeing was “hell-bent” on sticking to its most recent contract proposal. In an interview the next day, local president Jon Holden said Boeing had overstated what it had offered to the union."

Well, guess I’m never flying Boeing again. If they’re willing to kill a guy over it, it must be even worse than we already realize.

#it’s not just this#a former Boeing exec walked off the plane when he realized it was a 737 max#he was willing to deal with a red eye flight rather than fly on that plane.#add to that the workers saying they wouldn’t fly Boeing and it makes you wonder just how bad it’s gotten#what do they see that we don’t#and what will they not say because now they’re scared
