I'm IWTV-wank-avoidance-asking Anon and it kinda missed me that it would be a wanky topic lol I was trying to see if the show is worth watching. A lot of my mutuals are posting IWTV gifs so I assume it's good, but I was curious if anyone who read the novel would think "Better read the novel". I don't realize an asking-for-rec ask would be wanky, but now that I think about who the writer is, it kinda makes sense. My bad lol
--
Ahahahaha.
Around here, I don't think anyone is precious enough about Anne Rice to start the genuine version of this wank, but Rice fandom can be... uh... very intense even on top of Rice herself having been the queen of drama.
You know about Red Beans Anne Rice, right?
Many years ago, Anne got all butthurt about a tacky-ass restaurant taking over an abandoned building that she'd had Lestat being emo in in one of the books. Instead of gothic atmosphere, it was now very PINK and LOUD. So she wasted money taking out ads in the local paper as Lestat trying to shame the restaurant owner... at which point a bunch of other restaurant owners also wasted money to respond in newspaper ads saying that they welcomed fellow businesspeople. It all ended in the restaurant's grand opening and people with plates of "Red beans Anne Rice" (i.e. red beans and rice).
--
Anyway, I read the first book back in the 90s when I was like 15. It's decent from what I remember. The thing that made it iconic when it came out in 1976 was that it was pretty heavily pushing the vampire=drug addict metaphor. This is everywhere in sexy goth sadboi vampire media now, but it wasn't as much of a thing at the time.
It was also very, very gay but in that way where (at least in the first book), nobody really says the word. That meant something in the 70s. Even by the 90s, it wasn't such a big deal, and it's a big nothingburger in the 2020s.
Book 1 is Rice dealing with the death of her child. It's all about suicidal feelings and Catholic weirdness. The main character is Louis, a.k.a. Rice's self-insert (which she confirmed herself).
Books 2 onward are about Lestat's dick.
He becomes a rockstar, vampire-bones the ur vampire, which causes him to mega level up, thus enabling him to thwart her plot to kill all men on earth aside form a few for breeding purposes, bodyswaps so he has a working penis again, fucks a nun, swaps back, gets Louis back by trying to commit suicide and accidentally getting a tan, etc... Much, much later books are about the other bonkers vampires, most of them more in the horny rockstar mold than the sad mommy of dead baby one.
In book 1, Louis is a depressed plantation owner who eats a bunch of his slaves among other fucked up shit. Claudia, their vampire daughter, is a small child who is upset about being stuck as a kid forever. One of the more disturbing parts is when Louis finds out she's fucking adult men. Lestat turns out to be a French nobleman with mommy issues despite Louis thinking he was only pretending to be upper class.
-- The TV series moved the entire plot much later in history, made Louis black, and gave him a spine. Some racists cried about this and some of tumblr cried about how it was offensive to take the plantation owner and make him black instead of doing that with the other one.
The show also made it more overt that Lestat is an abusive jackass boyfriend. This apparently came as a surprise to people with poor reading comprehension. Others have wanked about fans still liking Louis/Lestat instead of Louis/less terrible boyfriends. But... like... It's IWTV. What did they expect?
(So yes, some book fans will be immensely wanky about the show. Ignore them.)
Also, I hear they fuck on the show? Rice's vampires don't have working junk, which we know because Lestat stands in front of an entire wall of mirrors in the most bougie bathroom ever in Akasha's evil lair and discusses how his penis—I mean "The Organ"—no longer does anything.
Also, Armand in the books is the 14-year-old kept boy of a Renaissance painter with a harem of boys or something like that. (It's been a very long time since I read these.) Shit like this never makes it into the adaptations.
--
If you're curious about the history of vampire media or about a certain kind of Southern gothic shit, sure, read the books, particularly the first one with its radically different tone and much greater historical importance.
The old movie is a decent adaptation of book 1, though it makes it less gay (or at least removes Louis' weird boner for his dead brother) and messes with the ending in a way that would have made sequels veer off from the books. I haven't seen that other old movie with Aaliyah, but it looks like a campy time capsule of baaaad movies of that era.
Anyway, no, you don't need to read the book before watching the show. They changed a massive amount of stuff.
I'm in more of a Chinese media phase right now, but a bunch of friends have watched and said the show is genuinely good.

Wait. I'm confused. Whats this thing you are talking about with bodyswaping and the color changing eyes?
:) Well, Daniel's eyes change color in the last shot of the last episode (2x08).
And... well. Raglan James is from the fourth book of the VC, called "The tale of the Body Thief"... which contains body swapping. Rolin Jones talked about the need to establish the concept of a "soul", both for Claudia's ghost I bet... but that would also be needed for any in-universe body-swapping.
Now, book canonically vampires can not change their eye color. So that is a show thing - a deliberate thing.
And the question is why. It is a hint, this show is a puzzle after all. But for what? And I theorized that it could be a hint that... well, someone "else" was present in Daniel's body at that moment. Maybe.
We'll see.
But Rolin Jones (and Jacob and Sam) have talked about TtotBT before, and given Raglan already there it IS coming. :)

Fic: Coins for the Eyes
sfdjksdljfl so I haven't written any Ouroboros-verse (Viren-Harrow bodyswap scenario AU) in forever but I wanted to get this out just in case all my "Claudia finds coined Kpp'Ar and it crumbles the last unstable pillars supporting her worldview" prayer circle manifesting for s6 actually works.
—
The next day, Claudia stayed in bed until after the noon bells, sitting with her knees drawn up to her chest and her folded arms resting on top of them.
She’d been only a child when Kpp’Ar disappeared. She barely even remembered those weeks, now—Soren on the edge of death, Kpp’Ar vanishing without a word, their mother dwindling to a speck on the horizon. Then her own first attempt at magic, followed by many, many more as she threw herself into the only thing that had made her feel like the future might hold something besides loss.
They never found out what happened to him. Her father’s duties as high mage seemed to crowd out every chance he had to investigate, and the Puzzle House was sealed by royal decree not long after she and Soren navigated it. After King Harrow was crowned, it seemed like everyone was determined to never speak of Kpp’Ar again. He became just another person who abandoned her without explanation—another ghost haunting her heart.
Ten years later, and she’d finally found a clue. A clue her father may have had that entire time.
He must have still been looking for Kpp’Ar, hoping to work out how to save him. It was the only explanation that made any sense, but it still hurt—he’d never said anything, even knowing how much it ate at her that Kpp’Ar was gone. If he’d told her, they could have worked on the problem together—she could have helped. She was smart and strong and eager, and they could have done so much if only he’d let her—
Like he let you help with saving King Harrow from assassins?
She shook the nasty voice out of her head, squeezing her eyes shut. “Stop being such a child,” she said aloud. “Maybe you weren’t strong enough then, but you are now. So fix it.”
It was Kpp’Ar she had first gone to with questions about magic. She had learned not to do the same with her father unless absolutely necessary—even after he started properly teaching her, he had little patience for explanations and tangents. Now they were both gone, but there was still someone who might be able to give her answers.
After finally dressing and coiling her hair into a severe knot at the back of her neck, she stepped out to face what remained of the day. She stopped by the high mage’s office, but Aaravos was nowhere in sight when she pulled the mirror’s cover away. Rather than wait for him, she scribbled a note on a scrap of paper and stuck it face-first to the glass with a blob of half-dried glue.
She spent the rest of the afternoon in the library, prowling the shelves for books on metallurgic magic and elven runes. When she felt like she couldn’t read anymore without screaming, she climbed up to the battlements and watched the sun slowly sink below the western horizon.
Aaravos was waiting when she returned to the office, his sunset-fog eyes and elegantly arched brows visible over the note stuck to the mirror’s face. She pulled the paper off and let it fall to the floor, picking up the slate and chalk.
The pinprick lights dusted over his indigo skin twinkled as he raised a hand, the usual glowing letters trailing behind his fingers to hang in the air. You say you want answers. You need only ask.
“Good evening to you, too,” Claudia muttered under her breath. The chalk squeaked as she wrote on the slate: Have you ever seen something like this? Then she drew the coin from her belt pouch and held both up to the mirror.
He motioned for her to bring the coin closer, leaning in to examine it. She turned it so he could see both sides—Kpp’Ar’s twisted face on one, and the strange, split-wheel symbol on the other—switching between them when he gestured with a twisting motion. His face was so close that his nose seemed like it might brush the glass, close enough that she could see the pale curve of his eyelashes and the stray hairs that fell across his face, all highlighted by the glow from the bright notches of light across his cheekbones. His eyes flicked briefly up to hers, and he slowly straightened.
I have, he wrote. For once, he didn’t wait for her to ask before offering his explanation. The complete essence of a human trapped in gold, body and spirit. A cruel, if effective, punishment for enemies.
Claudia swallowed against the tightness in her throat. She closed her hand around the coin, holding it tightly for a moment before tucking it back into her pouch.
When she looked back to the mirror, Aaravos was watching her. It is someone you care for.
She nodded slightly, then sat down in her chair and rubbed the slate clear. He was like a second father to me, she wrote out. I’m a mage because of him.
It wasn’t something she’d ever admitted aloud—that it had been Kpp’Ar who truly nurtured her love of magic, not her father. She never doubted that her father loved her, but he’d shown no interest in teaching her until she was already getting in trouble for messing up spells she’d learned on her own. When he finally saw she had talent, he’d trained her rigorously in building and using it. Kpp’Ar had spoken of magic as something to love—powerful, but also wonderful and weird and sometimes silly. Something fun, not just a tool to be used for greater ends.
I’m sorry. Aaravos looked at her with sympathy, his face somehow softer and more genuine than ever before. It hurt some, to be looked at that way, but she also felt a little better. Like someone cared.
Rather than continue to meet his eyes, she wiped the words from the slate again and busied herself with writing. Who could have done this? After a moment, she added, Can it be undone?
He can be freed, though it is both difficult and costly. The next part of Aaravos’s reply came slowly, with clear hesitation. As for who: I will say only that the spell cannot be cast without the aid of a powerful relic, of which kind there is only one.
She stared at him, perplexed—was she supposed to somehow know the relic he spoke of? He held her gaze at first, but then his eyes shifted slightly, focusing on something behind her. A shiver ran down her spine, and she turned slowly to scan the room.
Her eyes immediately fell on her father’s staff, propped against the doorframe.
“No,” she said reflexively. She turned back to the mirror, shaking her head. It couldn’t be that. It couldn’t be. It was a mistake—she was tired and upset, and it made her misinterpret things. Aaravos would correct her.
Aaravos only looked back out at her, that same knowing sympathy on his star-speckled face.
“No,” she said again. “No, no, no—that’s impossible. Dad wouldn’t. He wouldn’t.”
She began to shake, her vision swimming. Her chest tightened like a vise until it stopped her breath. The slate and chalk slipped from her numb fingers and hit the floor with a crack she barely heard.
That her father could have done this to Kpp’Ar—not just kept secret from her what had happened to him, but lied to her for more than half her life—she couldn’t even process it. He’d barely investigated Kpp’Ar’s disappearance because he’d known what happened all along. He’d let her think Kpp’Ar had abandoned her. Like her mom had abandoned her.
Like he eventually would, too.
Aaravos was still watching her when she looked up again. More glowing letters drifted in front of him. Are you all right?
Claudia wiped her eyes angrily and nodded. She picked up the slate, making a face at the long crack that had formed across one corner, and one of the larger pieces remaining of the shattered chalk.
How can I free him? she wrote, calm and precise.
I can help you, but not like this. He gestured expansively to the glass and glowing words between them. We must first be able to speak to and hear one another. I know a small ritual that will allow that. After completing it, we can begin.
She rubbed out her words and wrote again. What do I have to do?
Aaravos smiled.

describe your comfort zone--a typical you-fic.
is there a trope you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole?
how many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? care to share one (read: some) of them?
what's the best writing advice you've ever come across?
choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style.
talk about a review that made your day.
1. describe your comfort zone--a typical you-fic.
A lengthy character study of a refined and repressed older woman who has her sexual awakening, sprinkled liberally with deep anguish and possibly even some grief.
2. is there a trope you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole?'
Anything with children. Acquiring one, having one, being one. I hate kids. I don't do futa, I won't touch gender swapping, I'm not interested in doing anything with addiction or substance abuse.
But most other things are fine. I've never done much with the more suspension-of-disbelief things like bodyswap, sex pollen, etc. but it sounds like a blast.
3. how many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? care to share one (read: some) of them?
I usually have about half a dozen ideas I'm semi-serious about in a document somewhere at any given time.
One idea involves Lina Astor and her (OC) lady's maid Beatrice. Lina is a bratty bottom who needs to be taken in hand, and Beatrice is more than up to the task of putting her mistress in her place. I just think Lina needs to get fucked more.
Another idea I had approximately twenty-three minutes ago: What if Avis got arrested in a raid and the only one she could call for help was Blanche, for some contrived reason? And Blanche actually showed up? Can you imagine Blanche trying to be helpful and caring? Disaster all around. It would be so funny, and so sad all at once.
4. what's the best writing advice you've ever come across?
Write for yourself, first and foremost. If you love your work, others will follow. The worst thing you can do is write for the masses just for the notoriety. A flop fic with three ardent devotees will always be more satisfying than a throwaway story for ten thousand strangers.
5. choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style.
You know, I don't necessarily think my style has drastically changed over the years. I've simply improved by leagues. Better at cutting out passive voice, and excising all those unnecessary adverbs I was so attached to.
6. talk about a review that made your day.
So, I write a lot of grief/mourning fics, and any time I get a comment from a reader who has been just emotionally devastated by my work, I float around on a cloud of (slightly sadistic) euphoria for the rest of the day. I like to make people cry because they care so much.
Beloved mutual right here sort of kickstarted this craving, though I've had previous crying comments. This one was just very special though. Claudia/Carmella, our beloveds.
#look i made a hat#oh my god i got another error message#turtle-down what are you doing to your asks?

He laughed at the playful aside, never offended by such word play. "Well mostly yours. I picked a play with a drop in drop out feel, so we could actually have a easy conversation. "Background noise usually puts people at ease. But are in as we're getting on just fine right now perhaps this ploy wasn't entirely necessary." Moving into the box and pulling across the hidden sliding door so they wouldn't be disturbed.
Motioning to a seat. He made himself conforable, notepad in hand and one primed."So care to fill in the blanks?"
Make Me Feel
90: our muses going to a concert/theatre play together:
Going to a theatre to see a play seemed like a neutral place, as well as achingly apt to meet someone from the original book. A meeting he couldn’t resist though one quarter in particular will be pissed he’d agreed to speak let alone meet her.

24. What’s a trope that you’d like to never hear about as long as you live, let alone write?
I am honestly a trope whore but I guess I would probably say that I am not really into bodyswap type fics most of the time. However if written well I would appreciate one. I just find them mostly predictable.
30. Post a snippet from your current WIP without context - no more than 300 words
The only wip I have something written for right now is for the server collab that I think you’ve already seen, but I’ll post a little as a treat.
“You pulled a candle from your pocket as Daichi held out the lantern, it’s flame licking at the wax until your wick caught flame. You held the tiny source of light close to your chest, shielding the flame with your hand. If it went out, you’d have a terrible time trying to get back to your quarters on the far side of the castle. Daichi wrapped his arm around you, his hand slotting in at the base of your spine, pulling you close for a languid kiss, slow and silent, neither of you wanting to let go. A breath passed as he finally broke the kiss, leaning his forehead against yours for only a moment, knuckles brushing your cheek. You exchanged no words, but you felt it, his love and passion that you returned tenfold under the cover of night.
Finally, Daichi turned over his shoulder and walked carefully down the long hallway. You dared to stay still long enough to watch his lantern light disappear around the corner before turning the opposite way and hurrying off to bed, your heart full but aching.”

aaravos x reader (bodyswap au)
chapter 1/?
warnings: talk of nightmares
word count: 772
notes: FINALLLYYYYY POSTING THIS i lov this purble jerk i love him to death (aaravos: then perish) also this is unedited sorry
it took a while to truly know aaravos. when you connected with him through the mirror for the first time, his smoke and mirrors of confidence and charisma completely fooled you. sure, he was still confident and charismatic, but you also now saw beneath that. you saw the real aaravos. the touch starved, lonely, scared aaravos. you had made it a point to visit him daily. the first few months were spent gaining trust and discussing surface details. he had done this with dozens of humans before, but stopped trying to make a connection when he realized they would never stay. but with you… he felt something else. a fierce loyalty that burned through the cursed mirror and into his soul. but still, he was reluctant to show his true colors.
your visits were usually at the same time every morning. 8:15 sharp. you’d show up in your pajamas with your breakfast and hot brown morning potion from claudia. this morning was different. it was 2:48 in the morning, and you had just woken from a nightmare. without thinking, you snuck down to the mirror, praying that aaravos was awake. you placed the familiar purple caterpillar on your ear with a shaky hand and sat in front of the mirror. to your dismay, aaravos was clearly asleep. he was slumped over on his desk, on top of an unfamiliar tome.
“aaravos!” you whispered. “please wake up!” you continued, a bit louder with some shake in your voice. “please!” you felt tears spring to your eyes as you began to remember the details of your horrific nightmare. you pulled your legs up to your chest and buried your head in your hands, trying as hard as you could not to cry.
“it is alright to cry, darling.” spoke a familiar voice. without any second thoughts, you let sobs rake through your body. surely you were an unpleasant sight, runny nose, uncontrollable tears, and terrible bedhead. about 10 minutes and many deep breaths later, you spoke again.
“i… had a nightmare.” you said hoarsely, gazing up at the startouch elf you had come to admire so much. “it was horrible, all of my worst fears and more. i couldn’t wake up fast enough.” he hummed in reply. “im afraid to go back to sleep. i don’t want to see it again.”
“then stay here with me. we can talk freely for as long as you desire.”
“are you sure? you were sleeping before.”
“i have all eternity to sleep. let’s talk.” you sighed.
“you were there. in my dream. lord viren he… he figured out how to communicate from you and you were taken from me. he used you for so many terrible things and i wasn’t able to see you or help.”
“that man… viren… he has been corrupted over time.”
“especially since the king’s passing… he’s gone mad. i have half a mind to lug this mirror away to the middle of the forest where he would never find you.”
“i don’t believe that will be necessary.” he responded with a chuckle. you rested your forehead against the mirror.
“i wish i could hug you. i would feel so much better.”
“i know. and i wish the same. how badly i long to see you in the flesh. i wish to hug away all of your problems, to live amongst the humans, to squeeze your hand, to kiss your-” he stopped himself and cleared his throat. “i miss the outside world. this communication is no longer enough for me.” he said, finishing his thought. to his surprise, your only response was a big yawn. “you need sleep darling.”
“hey, so do you!”
“no i don’t. you need to rest.”
“i don’t want to go lay in bed alone, i can’t stop thinking about that dream. could you maybe… tell me a story?” you asked sheepishly. a smirk spread across his face.
“well of course. any requests?’ you shook your head. “i suppose i could tell you a story of xadia, let’s see…”
two or three stories later and you were asleep at the foot of the mirror. aaravos gazed at you with love and admiration, wishing that stupid mirror would just disintagrate in his hands. but alas, all he could do was sit there and watch. sit there and want. sit there and wait. sit there and wish for your happiness. he often found it curious how much he cared for and loved a human girl, but he still found his heart beating twice as fast when you came around. and he knew… there was something special about you. he could feel it.

TDP Character Swap
This is a simple drawing and writing event to have fun in December, hosted by @avtoservis. TDP characters of your choice will swap outfits with (draw) or meet (write) characters from other fandoms. 🍒 Draw or write as much as you want, upload whenever you feel like and fulfill as many prompts as you feel comfortable. 🍒 You can follow the prompts as they're written, or you can randomize them - it's up to you. If the latter sounds intriguing, I recommend random.org's list randomizer. Use #tdpcharswap on social media, so others can find your art or fic! I will reblog them here.
The rules are under cut:
Rules for Artists
Choose any TDP characters that you like and draw them wearing an outfit from a character from a different fandom. The different fandom characters, in turn, have to fulfill one of these prompts: 🍬A character who has a similar personality to yours 🍬A character who has blue hair 🍬A character you like from a 90s or 00s show/movie/game/book/play/etc. 🍬A character you really liked as a kid 🍬A character you hated as a kid, but now you think they’re not that bad 🍬A character whose character design you really like 🍬A character whose outfit you don’t like 🍬A character from the last show you watched 🍬A character who is very tall 🍬A character who has a bad temper 🍬A character from any sci fi media 🍬A character you think the TDP character of your choice would get along with 🍬A character you think the TDP character of your choice would hate 🍬A character who’s into sports 🍬A nerdy character 🍬A character who dresses like you 🍬A character who plays tough, but is actually soft in the inside 🍬A character who has long hair 🍬A character who has facial hair 🍬A queer character 🍬A character who has a non-human skin tone 🍬A character from one of your favorite ships 🍬A character who plays a musical instrument 🍬A character who you think you’d be good friends with 🍬A character who drives a car 🍬A character from any fantasy media 🍬A character whose first language isn’t English 🍬A character who was born in your country or region 🍬A character who only wears dark clothes 🍬A character who is the same age as you 🍬One of your friends’ favorite character at the moment Example: I choose Claudia from TDP and choose the "A character who plays a musical instrument". For that prompt, I choose Scarlemagne from Kipo. Thus, I end up drawing Claudia dressed as Scarlemagne.
Rules for Writers
Choose any TDP characters that you like and write a fic of them meeting a character from a different fandom. You can simply write a ficlet that shows a single scene of character interaction. Unlike the artists, you get two types of prompts:
Prompts for characters
Prompts for interaction
See the character prompts above.
Here are the prompts for character interactions:
🍭Fall in love or become good friends (whichever your comfortable with) 🍭Discus a movie they both thought was terrible 🍭Disagree over something 🍭Find something unexpected 🍭Run away from someone 🍭Break into some place 🍭Have been on a journey together for a while 🍭Meet each other for the first time 🍭One character suddenly appears in another’s universe 🍭Cook together 🍭Are stranded on a deserted island 🍭Work in the same place 🍭Are neighbors 🍭Share a hobby 🍭One of them is the hero, and the other - the villain 🍭One of them is the new kid at school 🍭One of them helps the other buy clothes 🍭One of them gives the other romantic/friendship advice 🍭Star in a reality TV show 🍭One of them did something bad and the other is helping them. If they’re not from Earth - they both appear on Earth. If they’re from Earth - they appear somewhere else (other planet/world) 🍭Solve a crime 🍭One is teaching the other something 🍭Wear disguise for some reason 🍭One helps the other fight against their enemy 🍭Compete against each other in sports/performance arts 🍭They got stood up by their dates and end up chatting in a cafe or restaurant 🍭One hires the other for a job 🍭They meet on a crowded bus/train/plane 🍭Their parents mary and now they’re step siblings 🍭Bodyswap 🍭Breaking the 4th wall: they watch one of theirs show/movie/play OR read one of theirs book/comic OR play one of theirs game and comment on it. You may choose how you match these yourself, or randomize the lists. Example: I choose Soren from TDP. Next, I choose the "character who is very tall" prompt and choose Brienne from GOT. Then, I choose the "Break into some place" prompt. I end up writing a ficlet where Soren and Brienne break into a bakery at night, because Soren was hungry for some baguettes. If you posts your work on ao3, use the TDP Character Swap tag, so I can find your fics and add them to a collection by the same name.

Things I am looking forward to learning in s2 of The Dragon Prince
1. What door does this key open?
2. WTF was Viren thinking, when he bodyswapped Harrow and Pip?
3. When is Claudia gonna read The Letter?
4. How long until Rayla finds out her parents AND her mentor are coins in a pouch?
5. WTF is the dragon mirror, anyway?
6. who IS this dude?
7. How the hell is Gren gonna get out of this, now that he’s seen what he’s seen?
8. How did Amaya know the door had opened behind her? And why did Gren yell instead of sign???
9. I WANNA SEE SOME UNICORNS, PEOPLE. And if bioluminescence is an indicator of magic, then how did Ez get Bait, and how has Bait escaped Viren?
10. Seriously, who are Soren and Claudia’s mum and Callum’s dad, and what happened to them?
11. Why do people sleep in their clothes?
12. Are these the Xadian leaders? What other types of elves are there, besides Moonshadow and Sunfire? Is there 1 per Primal Source?
13. Are these the Dragon Guard? Does that mean those two Moonshadow elves are Rayla’s parents?
14. If “Thunder” is Azymondias’ father, is this his mum? Why does the elf lady with the tiara have a staff in the shape of the dragon’s crest?

The Dragon Prince Theory
The Dragon Prince is good, and got my theory brain buzzing. Potential spoilers under the cut. This is juicy, I might actually be a little disappointed if this isn’t the case.
Despite Harrow being narratively framed as “the good, wise king whose death kickstarts the plot” and Viren being framed as “the scheming advisor who secretly wants the throne,” I think something different is at play here. I think “Viren” is actually a soul-swapped King Harrow, and everything he’s doing is simply him trying to maintain the throne after “his” death. Here’s why:
1. Before Harrow’s death, everything Viren did was to protect the King’s own life first, not to stabilize the kingdom. But after it, he suddenly started talking about being a pragmatist, and the “bigger picture” of saving the kingdom. The same kinds of things King Harrow kept focusing on, instead of Viren. And the things he said specifically sounded off, too. Especially when he called himself a “servant” of the realm. That immediately tipped me off.
2. They wouldn’t introduce that soul-swapping snake for nothing. Sure it established the kind of things you can do with dark magic, but swapping bodies is awfully specific. And Viren wouldn’t have kept that snake basket around with him for the rest of the episode either, and they wouldn’t have called attention to it again just to remind the audience that it was still there. That snake is important somehow.
3. King Harrow, despite being framed narratively as the “wise, good king whose death kickstarts the plot,” didn’t exactly act like a good guy if you analyze his actual actions and lines. His quips to Viren about executing him for waking up early sounded like a joke, but it’s easy to imagine it actually being something he said in anger. He had to have been aware of the Dragon Prince’s egg, and since the Dragon Prince’s egg being stolen seems relatively recent, he might have been the one who ordered the Dragon King killed, too. And that scene where he forced Viren to kneel and swear to him didn’t exactly paint a good picture.
4. His remarks about Viren’s “creative solutions” and how he should “call them what they are: dark magic” seemed like he was dismissing them, but dark magic doesn’t have a stigma in the human kingdoms. Claudia and Viren practice it openly, and people don’t seem to mind too much beyond “that’s a little gross.” In that moment, King Harrow’s words could easily be reinterpreted as “call it what it is and don’t dance around the subject, we’re not afraid of it.”
5. Similarly, his reluctance to body-swap seemed to come from a place of compassion for his men, but it could just as easily be because he was afraid of losing power. “I’d rather die as a king than live as a coward” could easily be “I’d rather die powerful than live with my power taken from me.”
6. With that in mind, Viren’s punishment for Runaan seems a bit poetic.
7. We don’t know what was written on the scroll he gave to Callum. It’s assumed it’s permission for Callum to take the throne since Ezran is too young and Callum isn’t a blood relative, but it could just as easily be “people will turn to you because you’re the older prince, but step back and let an adult like Viren or Amaya take the throne instead because you’re too young and reckless to be ruling the kingdom.” Or better yet, “stay in hiding and pretend to be dead indefinitely.” We conveniently don’t know because Callum never opened it.
8. We never see Harrow die. I know this is a family cartoon and they have to A:TLA all the violence offscreen, but it’s odd that the only way we know that Harrow died because of Runaan firing the messenger arrow and the bond disappearing. The rest is left suspiciously vague. In later scenes in the dungeon, Viren doesn’t even acknowledge that Runaan killed the king. Perhaps “Harrow” was already dead by the time Runaan entered the chambers?
9. The funeral was rushed, and the body cremated instantly. To hide evidence, perhaps? A snake bite? Wounds from non-elven blades?
10. Again, they brought up the snake basket a second time. And a third time. And Viren brings it into Harrow’s chambers during the last time we see Harrow alive.
11. Rewatching the episode, immediately after that scene, Viren’s whole posture, demeanor, and body language changes. To match Harrow’s. It’s subtle, but it’s there. He raises his chin more, tightens his lips more when he speaks, and even does Harrow’s eyebrow-raising thing, which he’d never done before (and suddenly, starts doing constantly). It’s... kind of obvious in hindsight.
12. Similarly, while he was a bit dispassionate when interacting with his children Soren and Claudia before, afterwards he’s downright cold, and much more distant. Physically speaking. He stands several feet from Soren at first, only coming closer when Soren doesn’t take the meeting seriously, and only reaches out and acknowledges that they’re father and son when he’s exhausted all other methods of persuading Soren of what to do. After that, he reaches out immediately to Claudia, like he’d been testing how to talk with Soren and applied it when talking to Claudia.
I don’t know if the bodyswap and everything following it was part of Harrow’s plan, or if Viren forced them to swap and Harrow was forced to improvise, or if the snake just jumped out of the basket and bit them both by accident. I don’t know if “Viren” murdered “Harrow,” or Runaan killed him, or again, if he died by accident after a scuffle, perhaps when Harrow tried to get Viren to switch them back. But I do think that Viren’s actions would make sense if he wasn’t just a scheming advisor and was actually King Harrow, a man so pragmatic and focused on “the greater good” that he’d sacrifice his own sons for the sake of stability.
