My take on the dependent vs independent plants in trigun is that the independent plants are brood parasites.

(For those who don't know, brood parasitism is an evolutionary tactic where the parent of one species leaves their eggs to be hatched and raised by another species. This usually happens with birds, fish, and insects.)

The independents are rarer than dependents but the whole point is for them to integrate into human cultures to foster stewardship over the dependents like how some real life plants HAVE evolved to need human intervention due to farming.

ALL the plants mimic humanity, but the dependents end up with vestigial/duplicate limbs probably in part due to having nothing to stop their growth imo. That isn't to say that the independents are Better or whatever, but they are the evolutionary endpoint of the mimicry.
