what do you think about the idea of the 118 responding to a call on a firefighter movie set and then either seeing their on-purpose doppelgängers (taylor kelly’s book is being adapted) or some buddie-like mlm couple getting together

gagged over the taylor kelly book adaptation idea. the 118 are all varying shades of annoyed that this is happening when they first show up- but after they respond to the emergency and they chat for a little bit, they feel a little better when taylor is like- “no. don’t worry guys, they’re not 100% following the book- it’s more like a ‘inspired by true events’ thing?” and then they completely forget to feel anything but excitement after they get to chum around with the actors that are supposed to be playing them.

fast forward to the movie trailer playing at the firehouse a couple of months later. one of the scenes that they show is fake eddie and fake buck in the back of the ambulance with fake eddie bleeding out after the shooting. fake buck is a slobbering mess trying desperately to save fake eddie and then you hear him say “please, eduardo, i love y- no, i’m in love with you. don’t leave without me being able to properly tell you. you’re my everything. i can’t do life without you,” and no one can tell you what the rest of the trailer even contains and you can’t read the expressions on buck and eddie’s face but hen chim and bobby are all like 😦🫢😳 but before anyone can actually say anything the alarm goes off lmfao

The first one is a little thing, but I bet Seiji had a crush on Marcus Washington when he was a kid--Nick's horror, Harvard's teasing, and Seiji's indignant blush imply as much.

And a fun fact, Jo posted a mini preview of baby Seiji to Patreon on February 14th...maybe I'm reading into it too much, but that's nothing new XD

Next couple of things are about the scene with the trophy case. It was really interesting and fun to see side-by-side redraws of Robert! It really illustrates the way the style has evolved, and also I gOTTA say it feels like Jo is more invested in Robert based on the level of detail she put in--like it's not just a style comparison, it's also just obvious a lot of attention was put into these shots when a) she could have just reused old shots (which she's done before, so I know it was an option), or kept it more simplified like she did when drawing the original shots.

I also think it's sweet that the redraws have Robert looking much more like Jesse than the originals.

And I am sure I will get flack for this, but I have incredible second-hand embarrassment from Nick leaving his newspaper clipping + note in the trophy case jfhdasl like bestieee noooo anyone can see that shit now oh my god please stooop

Onto some Nichoji thoughts! I love that Seiji's been confirmed as a before-bed reader! Him having a Kindle makes sense for the sheer efficiency of it too lmfao. Of course it's also adorable to see him in reading glasses <3 And then my favorite detail is Nick's stupid nightlight...notice where it is?

Rather than illuminating Nick's side of the room, it's peeking around the curtain and lighting up Seiji's reading, which is beyond adorable and sweet. I wonder whether Seiji stole it or Nick put it there knowing Seiji likes to read before bed, and I love both scenarios.

Also, it's fucking adorable that as soon as Nick mentions their date appointment, Seiji takes off his glasses and lowers his Kindle because it's got his full attention and investment.

And a quick pitstop to the locker rooms!

I like the visual metaphor here with Aiden and Bobby both very casual about changing and both literally having their shirts open; meanwhile, Seiji's straightening the cuffs on his button-down, which is already neatly tucked in and complete with his tie. It just highlights how Seiji's a lot more closed off than the others, and I think this was a neat trick to remind us of that.

In regards to plot, I'm still...really disappointed in the pacing. I know most people feel like it's a slowburn/it's taken a long time to develop, but if you waited to read Fence at all until it was complete and then read it all in one sitting, I think you'd see how unbalanced it is. Williams says that their first match will be in three weeks back right after tryouts:

which means everything between issue 12 and CHALLENGERS has happened in 3 weeks. Seiji and Nick's relationship is so sweet and cute, but it went from resentful rivalry to puppy love overnight with very little 'screen time' dedicated to the actual transition from resentment to friends (which I could write a whole essay on but this is not the post for that lmfao). Furthermore, the fact that it's the first match of State Championships rather than first match of the season is crazy to me. I'll admit, I didn't fence in high school--it wasn't even an option because we didn't have a team. And despite hours of research, the structure of high school team fencing is not entirely clear to me. However, I do know that typical high school sports go through the season, facing every other team in their division or whatever. Based on performance in those matches, they can qualify for state, and then their win ratio determines their seeding order for the state championships that happen in like 1-2 days. Seeding order is who you go up against in a bracket, so it's what this diagram is, basically:

(side note, but it appears there are 24 schools competing at state). Again, fencing could be different, but it kinda seems to me like we skipped over the season and went right to State Championships, which just cuts out so much development and build-up. It's like we're speed-running the entire story to get to the end faster. We cut out showing the development in the romance, and now we're cutting out the development of the plot. There's still plenty that we can do at state, of course, but imagine how much more it would mean to see Nick fencing in front of Robert if we'd built that up more. I just don't understand how we spent 12 issues on try outs, 4 on a practice match, 8 on camp, and none on the fencing season. It feels so abrupt and unbalanced. Tryouts and camp were my favorites arcs because they felt pretty well-paced as self-contained pieces of the story. I just feel like we needed waaaaay more relationship development between those two arcs to be satisfying, and I feel like there should be waaaaay more build up during the fencing season between camp and State Championships.

and now, the moment you've all been waiting for: my devastation over Eugene's role (???) in the story. I honestly question why he's in the story at all--at this point, it would have made more sense to have him flat-out not make the team. Except that keeping him this long lowkey backs up the theory I've had on his role since Striking Distance/RIVALS: Eugene is here to make everyone else look better/cooler/more impressive. The very first thing that struck me when reading the first look was this:

The dialogue here suggests that only one reserve actually gets to be on the team in the end, and the reserve is Nick. And, worse, everyone expected it to be Nick. Sure, it's sweet that Seiji thinks Nick's the better fencer, but all I can think about is how hard Eugene's worked for ten years trying to make the team as opposed to Nick's three months of fencing. Now, I love an underdog story. But it's interesting because Pacat stated in an interview (I'd have to go find where for the specific quote) that he always feels bad for the person who's been working to be #1 their whole lives only to be knocked out of the running by an upstart underdog--which I've always assumed would influence the path taken in Fence...and it seems like we may well let Seiji and Jesse remain above Nick in skill (or at least it seems like we won't be dethroning Seiji, even if we go for Jesse), but Nick's overcoming smaller obstacles. And those smaller obstacles hurt worse to see crushed because Eugene almost made the team in a way that mattered, only to have that taken away. It would have been less cruel to him and his fans to let Nick take the reserve slot back in issue 12, but instead we brought Eugene along to serve as a means to make Nick out 'secret weapon' and elevate his story.

I will say though, this page is one of my favorite Eugene moments because I see the character I selfishly want Eugene to be in it. From the context of the panels above, this page is likely Williams telling them that only one will be fencing in State Championships, and this is their reaction. Eugene's immediate concern for Nick and the comforting hand on his shoulder followed by a bright smile and a thumbs up--he just cares so much about other people and it so used to smiling through his own pain/disappointment and comforts Nick through being positive (and as seen back in issue 12, up playing his competitiveness) and acting like it's no big deal.

Eugene deserved better, but if this is where he goes out, I think I can live with it. Better to see him go now than continue to be a means to uplift the rest of team by being less than. but, man, I was really hoping we were turning it around after his moment in REDEMPTION being the only KR boy not to lose his bout

I’ve seen this blog a lot recently but I’m prettyyy late to the party so I’ve missed a lot. Could you give a small summary to catch me up on whats happening please? Thankss !!^^

Oh of course! Buckle up it’s a bit of a long story-

So basically it started with Hoppy finding a monitor with communications to the outside world inside of the councilors office back at Playcare. At that point, she was open for questioning. She was leaving the councilors office when she was attacked by Picky. She managed to run back to the cable car in time, but not before loosing her foot. Inside of the cable car, one of the anons (a friend and I call them static anon) made a deal with her that in exchange for gaining her foot back, Picky would know where she was at all times and would be able to hunt her down. Once that deal was made, Picky was open for questioning. Once Hoppy left Playcare via cable car, she headed to an employee’s break room, where she, Bobby and Crafty had been staying at. Bobby scolded her for leaving without telling her and was open for questioning. She then found out Picky was hunting Hoppy, so they grabbed Crafty (who was then open for questioning) and left. Meanwhile with Picky, she had just got off the cable car when she was met with Kickin. He revealed that he followed her by flying behind the cable car due to CatNap ordering him to bring Picky back. Picky refused and continued on her search, so Kickin followed her. It was also revealed on the cable car ride that Picky believed DogDay had abandoned them all in cold blood, sparking her hatred for him. It was later also revealed that awhile ago and before anyone had left Playcare, after Picky had taken a few nibbles out of Bubba while unconscious, Hoppy didn’t tell her that she, Bobby and Crafty were planning to leave Playcare. That also made Picky pretty much hate her as well. Hoppy also tried to get Kickin to come with them, but he refused, claiming it was too dangerous and insisting she stay behind. Eventually, Kickin ended up informing CatNap of their escape plan, who ripped off Hoppy’s ear and gave it to Kickin as a reward. Picky ended up eating the ear. While all this was happening, Bubba was in a coma due to an overdose from the red smoke. When he woke up awhile later, he wasn’t able to function properly, so Kickin has been taking care of him since. Got a bit off track- sorry it’s my ADHD lmfao.

So basically going back to Picky’s search, she eventually crossed paths with Hoppy, Bobby and Crafty. Before Kickin could even do anything, Crafty smacked him in the head with the monitor, knocking him out. It was a bit of a fight until Hoppy and Bobby managed to get Picky knocked out as well. They brought them back to their home and tied them up, before Bobby realized Crafty was missing. She left to go find her and Hoppy was left alone with Picky and Kickin, who were now awake. It was around this time Kickin was open for questioning. I think I forgot to mention that Crafty had her arms off for trying to attack CatNap for red paint. Crafty had been made a deal by Static Anon that if she injured another bigger body by taking their arms, she’d be able to get her own arms back. So she was heading to the Game Station to do so. She ran into Mommy Long Legs, who is currently taking care of her.

Bobby followed her to the Game Station but ran into Baby Long Legs. Baby brought her to Daddy Long Legs, who revealed that he hadn’t participated in the Hour of Joy. Bobby revealed that she had, and as of current in the story, Daddy is insisting that he does not want anything to do with her.

Back to Hoppy, Kickin and Picky. Kickin managed to trick Hoppy into freeing him and overpowered her. He revealed that he had a plan to bring her and the monitor back to CatNap in exchange for DogDay’s freedom. Forgot to mention that Kickin ran into DogDay in the Playhouse, and got blinded in one eye as punishment. Kickin keeps insisting that Hoppy won’t be harmed because CatNap will want her loyalty. Both Picky and Hoppy think his plan is the stupidest thing they’ve ever heard of. Picky is going along with it because she wants to see Hoppy suffer. Hoppy is pretty sure she’s going to die. She managed to convince Kickin into not handing the monitor over to CatNap yet, but that was the best she was able to do. Right now, they’re on the cable car and headed back to Playcare, and Hoppy has lost basically all chance of escape.

*collapses* I DID NOT REALIZE HOW MUCH THAT WAS GOD DAMN-

Edit: Okay gang we got some more stuff now-

Anyways so Kickin made a deal that any pain Hoppy feels he will feel too. After that, the cable car landed in Playcare. Catnap was waiting (not so) patiently for their arrival, and immediately scruffed Hoppy and carried her away before Kickin could explain why the hell she was there in the first place. Of course, this causes him to freak out because oh my god Hoppy might actually die now because CatNap has no context, but you know 😋

Anyways so CatNap brought Hopster to the prototype, who basically said “nah, this one sucks, I can’t do anything with her. Do whatever you want Idc” so CatNap scratched her and gassed her. He also named dropped her-her names Rebecca-and no, not like the stupid bunny from Peppa Pig. Also Kickin got injured from that scritchy scratch too because of that deal FYI.

Back to our favorite bear and unicorn- well Daddy Long Legs sorta insulted Bobby’s entire bloodline and then so she stormed out bc she was mad, and immediately yelled for Mommy to show herself and give Crafty back to her. She came down and did give Crafty back, but refused to let them leave, even though Bobby is aware Hoppy is in danger. So yeahhhh, girly is kinda stuck lmfaooo

Okay hopefully I remember all of this. So CatNap put Hoppy under Kickin’s surveillance. Birdbrains flew her up to a nest that he had made on one of the fake Playcare clouds. There they had a little fight and Kickin went a bit wack, before he took a step away to go grab the monitor. While he was gone, Hoppy went through his stuff. In his stuff, she found a diary. You can read the entries right here, but be wary of the trigger warnings. So obviously she read some messed up things, and Kickin walks in on her reading it. He screams at her and basically kicks her out and makes Picky watch her instead. Both of them are grumpy about it and they are passive aggressive messes towards each other. Picky locks Hoppy inside of a room in Home Sweet Home, not wanting to risk her escaping and getting her ass whooped. Kickin’s just up on his nest crying his white girl tears.

Okay now with Bobby and Crafty. Mommy kinda sorta threw them in a room and locked the door, saying she’ll be back. Bobby and Crafty freak out and are just kinda talking, before someone mysterious (it was kissy missy lol) unlocks the door and just leaves. Crafty picks up some papers that she found on the desk that look important before following Bobby out the door. While they’re walking, Bobby gets a deal. Rip off either Baby, Daddy, or Mommy Long Leg’s hands and Crafty will get her hands back. Of course Bobby doesn’t want to do this, and so Crafty cutely insults her entire bloodline. Anyways then Kissy Missy finds them and tells them to follow her. Crafty asks them to take them to where Baby or Daddy are and Bobby is like hell no and Crafty is like yeah well we’re going anyways. I’ll update this when there’s more I prommy 😋

Liz didn't really like Mason in the beginning. Like AT ALL lol. But he's so unlike everyone else she's met, especially since her best reference of relationships came from Rebecca and then Bobby. She's come to know (and fallen in love with) the fact that Mason's all about actions over words. He's never given her excuses. He's upfront and honest and there. She appreciates that he doesn't put on a front and he is who he is, and that he's a reliable constant in her life, someone she knows will be by her side and will come running before she even thinks of calling. It's funny that that is when she started thinking all the horny thoughts lmfao

Mason went from absolutely not trusting her to only trusting her lol. He appreciates how understanding she is, especially when it comes to him and to their relationship. He tries to express himself and fails miserably but luckily, Liz understands his silence and what he needs.

13) What is their go-to for making a partner feel loved?

Liz loves to bombard (and I mean BOMBARD) people she loves with affection and Mason is no different lol. Lots of touching, kissing, hugging, words of affirmation, etc. She doesn't hold back in expressing how much he means to her and while Mason may grunt and moan about it, he secretly enjoys it haha.

Mason pays extra attention to stuff she loves, even if he doesn't get it. He'll listen to her talk and talk about stars and the universe and try to engage, be curious. He's also one for physical affection, and constantly touches her, holds her and keeps her close.

20) When would they say “I love you?” Do they say it first? Do they say it often, or is it reserved for special moments?

Liz didn't hold back from telling Nate she loves him. She said it first, when they were researching the Annunaki. She tells Nate often, and doesn't wait for an occasion.

Nate told her at the end, (so really following the book's timeline) and tells her often as well, reserving the I love yous in different languages for more intense, special moments.

30) What completely petty topic (music taste, favorite food) do they find themselves completely at odds with their partner about?

Ahaha, Liz has the Pakistani virus of putting ketchup on everything, and her pasta is not safe from her precious tomato elixer, much to Nate's horror and disgust. Liz tries to secretly sneak ketchup into the warehouse and all's well until Nate's horrified gasp is heard from the living room when he hears the bottle's squirttt! She has to bribe Felix for the safe storage of her condiments 😁

Please, spill some tea on Al’s relationships. 😭 Someone on quora has said Diane is painting herself as the victim while we don’t know his perspective, that she is the one who never had a long term and stable relationship while her exes went on to have their own families. Diane said on the Ellen show she had quite a few relationships that lasted "about 5 years". She also said no man she ever dated proposed to her, which is why she didn't end up married. I actually ended up finding out that Warren Beatty did in fact propose to Diane but she said no. I found on this article a reason why, which is Diane wanting to focus on her career, but I can't find the original source I read it on which didn't state a reason--just simply that Diane didn't want to marry him. I read that this happened during the filming of a movie they had together and as a result, Warren made Diane rehearse a scene (or something) again and again on purpose to take his frustration out on her. Again, don't know if this is true or not, just what I read!

Also, to assume that someone hasn't had stable relationships because they never married or have children is such utter bullshit.

We know how on and off Al was with Diane and how that one ended. What I still can't find any info on or make sense of is them breaking up in 1990, but no mentions of breakups in 1988 or 1989, but Al having a child in 1989 with someone else? Sheesh.

There was an interview Al and Marthe Keller did together around the Bobby Deerfield days. Marthe was almost describing what kind of wedding/wedding gown she would want to wear. She was saying no pressure on marriage/kids, and the interview described Al as being quiet, awkward and not saying anything. Marthe was head over heels, swooning a whole paragraph about how amazing Al was and he said nothing. All he did was smile awkwardly. They broke up later down the line of course, and Marthe I believe kept one of his mugs he drank out of.

Hey, everyone, so besides commissions and all my SPECIL SALESMAN art, I would also like to share more things (like original art) and draw fanart for other things. Spamton G. Spamton is a mainstay on my blog. He is very important to me, and if you don't like him, then too bad!

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (17+ GORE HORROR. Do not look up if you are sensitive.) - Recently fell in love with this series. I consider the original anime from the 2000s to be a masterpiece. I want to draw my favorite character, Takano!

Taimanin universe (17-18+. Seriously don't look it up if you're a minor lol.) - I really love some of the characters of this series, like my waifu Ingrid. I've drawn her before, and I want to draw her again. Funny enough, one of my pieces is featured in the mobile game Action Taimanin as a poster on the wall for a level. Sometimes, I see people use my art as an icon. It's very flattering!

Dragon Half (15+) - One of my all-time favorite mangas ever made from the 1980s. I think it's long overdue I make a fanart for it.

Winx Club - I have numerous unfinished fanarts for this series. I love it so much, even though Sailor Moon is superior lmfao.

Shoujo Tsubaki (18+. BANNED WORLDWIDE. DO NOT LOOK IT UP if you are sensitive or if you are a minor) - I watched this two nights ago, and it's so sad... I plan to do an analysis of it. I honestly don't think it's the worst thing ever, but I can see why people find it offensive, as it touches upon A LOT OF taboo topics.

Psychonauts - This game series man... So good. I want to draw something of my favorite character, Helmut, and his husband, Bobby. I just absolutely adore them. 😭

Touhou Project - It's been a long time since I've drawn proper fanart for this series. I have A LOT on my DeviantArt account, but I'd like to draw my favorite girls again.

Super Mario Bros - Peach is my original waifu. I've tried drawing her many times in my style, but I've kind of failed. I also really like Princess Daisy's N64 version and want to draw her again. Rosalina/Rosetta, I will also think about it.

The Legend of Zelda - This one is a little... Difficult for me. This is one of my favorite game series ever, but I really struggle to make art for it. I want to since it heavily inspired my work, but damn is it hard... Hopefully, I can break out of my shell for this.

Various other Eroge titles (18+) - Eroge are any games with erotic elements that originate from Japan. There are so many I like that range from simply being romantic to utterly insane. If you're a minor, do not look up anything.

Runescape - How I love thee. It's been a while since I've drawn fanart for it. I love the Elves haha!

Creepypasta or ghost legends/stories - I've been listening to a lot of these lately and I feel a bit inspired to draw some of the things that pop up in my imagination.

Hello defend in place/may day anon. Just finished 5b and wtfff it was soooooo goooood??!!!!! Literally if the wacky jonah plot wasnt there … okay okay general thoughts 1. Adding dumb luck and may day to my roster of favourite episodes this season dumb luck idk I just really liked it (lucy plot yay!! Also bobby of all people pointing out all the people lucy saved by saving one person) and may day of course episode of all time (more on that later) 2. Karen in fomo is giving buck and eddie in that back yard pool mystery so bad literally buddiekaren sleuth episode when. Or karen anyone sleuth episode pretty please 3. The eddie plot in hero complex is literally so out of place lmfao. Also well. Im usually not a diaz parents hater but rewatching this episode knowing current canon was making me so annoyed at them like let eddie live in peace. Please 4. I miss the music budget they used to have. Like they really paid to use longview by green day and holding out for a hero by bonnie tyler within the first 5 minutes of 5x17. For a jonah origin story. Lol. 5. Literally so interesting that they had taylor talk about what the 118 means to buck and then have her literally betray, in her words, bucks family in the very next episode. i need to analyze her brain 6. I love this hen chim plot so much. And its like I watch that, and theres so many good examples of how buck and eddie are written in parallel to the romantic pairings in the show, but here so so obvious to me how they are also not written like hen and chim’s relationship at all. Like buck and eddie neverrr have buddy / team up plots literally the only ones that come to mind are treasure hunt (buck was wooing taylor) and an episode we all refer to as poker date. Lol. Its like chim and hen are about having a ride or die. And buck and eddie are about sitting in each others mess and embracing it. Idk if that makes sense but it was stewing in my head the whole time I was watching 5x18 lol. 7. Continuity in this show is so bad sometimes, why did eddie say he had to leave to pick up chris and also chris had friends over and he had to help carla in the same eddie bobby 5x18 scene. Like was it supposed to show eddie making excuses to leave or was it just a mistake 😭😭

It was so good omgg I was already kinda annoyed about the jonah plot before watching the season as a whole but now Im even more annoyed because may day would have served as the perfect 2 part finale (like s2/s3/s4) okay I’ll go by each character. May oh my gosh… her character growth from when she started dispatch to this point is so incredibly good. The stuff with claudette was so good, and I actually wish they would have explored her and may more than just the 3 episodes they were really in together. And then the may bobby stuff :((( so good. “I have two dads and youre one of them” and after bobby accidentally said he was her dad that morning… so good (david Im so sorry she didnt mean it). Literally what a good psuedo send off for corinne. Okay eddie HES SO HOT THIS EPISODE YAY. Literally 90% of my context for this ep was hot eddie may day edits lmao and it did not disappoint. But more importantly “god has spoken” eddielinda forever <3 it was sush a good line and such a fun pay off for the eddie linda stuff in 5x11. Okay the chim albert stuff… circling back to your answer to my original ask it was very not spoilery and I probably would have been fine to read it lol BUT crucially the one thing I did not know in your answer was that there was chim plot in this episode so in the end Im glad I didnt read it. I literally thought it was only may/claudette/bobby/eddie with the weird bucktaylorlucy stuff at the end. And let me tell you my heart dropped when chim and albert walked on that roof. I literally started crying and 911 is not even a show I tear up at that often. And then the moment when chim told albert to quit :’) so so good. And now Im even more mad at albert for 6x10 like why tf would he do that. Anyways. Josh yay I hope hes still dating that man Im so serious. I dont even care about him that much but Im sorry the only romance adjacent plots he has cannot be a hate crime and a man he flirted with once and never talked to again. Okay and buck. Why was he literally way more upset about bobby here than he was at any point in the 7x10 finale LMAO. The difference between the buck/lucy talk in this ep and that buck/tommy talk is actually insane, and yeah Im starting to see why people were so upset tommy was acting that way in the s7 finale. Anyways I dont really want to talk about him… how did taylor kelly sus out bucklucy from a conversation she couldnt hear while she stared at the back of their heads. Like 😭 okay final little thought was the way parts of this episode were written made me giggle. There was so much going on which is probably what makes it work so well but terry (hi king long time no see!!) was literally like sue I was asphyxiating like 60 minutes ago but the paramedics said Im fine now where do you need me. And then linda was like josh I cant leave Im literally on a call. Only for the call to end like 10s later haha. Okay and overall the thing thats so interesting to me is that this ep was definitely a tier above most of s5 but also it was an episode that was majorly focused on minor characters. Eddie aside, this ep was mostly about may/claudette/albert/josh with chim and bobby tied in with albert and may respectively. And its so interesting to me how well it worked here when generally their focus on minor characters felt so off in 5a. Oh well

Tl;dr: Im soooo happy I went into may day mostly blind it was actually sooo good, lived up to the hype and probably will be added to my episode of all time/rewatch roster which is very exclusive (maybe 10 eps). And thank YOU for the very mild encouragement to actually sit down and watch s5 in its entirety finally. I have so many thoughts about it all lol this is barely scratching the surface (like how the whole finale was basically about love stories and they made a point to show everyone starting over together and buck helping eddie start over while also deciding not to start over with taylor ANYWAYS) (also just remembered they destroyed a whole fire truck in the s5 finale only for bobby to be angsty about it for like 2 seconds and never talk about it again lmao what was that about. No wonder fox is broke)

same anon as before but thank u for the interesting response! and i’m sorry in advance for this long venting lol, but honestly i’m just really frustrated because i think fence could be as popular and mainstream as projects like check please or heartstopper if 1) there was good marketing for it, 2) if the releasing of the issues wasn’t so puzzling, and 3) if the storyline was progressing in a natural way.

rise makes no sense in context of the novels at all and im just? if they were going to have tie-in novels they should have been used to progress character and relationship development, not create an alternate world that’s never going to be addressed. even putting aside gross mischaracterization the novels literally cannot be canon so they’re just published for? no good reason i can see? they could have prequels (seiji and jesse or harvard and aiden pre-series) or been about the team bonding/getting better at fencing, or focused on side characters that won’t get as much focus in the comics (eugene! if he’s mostly being side-lined in the comics the novels could have been his time to shine instead of him being even more sidelined. or even bobby and dante or kally and tanner). there’s definitely a lot of characters in the comics and if it was getting overwhelming the novels could have picked up that slack but they didn’t so their purpose mystifies me — there was also clearly no reason to have nicholas and seiji as pov characters in those books because srb (and i do adore all srb’s other work so this is hard for me to say) was terrible at writing them. when she was good she was good (which makes me think if there had been more editing the novels could have been better) but when she was bad she was very very bad. since she was even worse at writing eugene i guess i should be glad eugene didn’t have a pov. but seriously if the novels were mainly just haiden it could have just been haiden pov.

idk i just used to love fence so much and always noticed there was never a huge following for it, which is okay because the small fence fandom is great!! but i’ve always thought it could have had a bigger audience. there is so much promise in the first issues of fence — kings row competing against exton, the revelation of the truth about nicholas, the reactions and results from that, character development for all the main characters, relationship development for nichoji & haiden, the team actually Becoming a team & the idea of seiji nicholas and eugene being the fencing team after aiden and harvard graduate. but i feel like we’re never going to see any of that. page time is spent on things that aren’t as important instead, and then it takes ages for the next issue/volume and like you said it doesn’t feel coherent or connected to the other issues anymore. it confuses me that all the edges in fence r being sanded down and that the interesting promises in it are constantly being put off.

Hi again! lmfao dude no need to ever apologize to me for vents about Fence because I am forever pontificating about it. I agree that Fence has (or, rather, had) the potential to be really popular to a wide audience and I think you hit the nail on the head. And so much of it is just such easy fixes--like putting any effort into marketing lol or when releasing the compiled issues as volumes, giving them all distinct covers and names would have been SO helpful. Reusing the issue covers for the volumes was a mistake (and again, that's something marketing should have been all over!!). and the storyline. oh man. yeah. that ship has sailed and I've had mental breakdowns about it--but if we'd stayed true to the original concept of Fence and BOOM and Pacat put more effort into reaching a wider audience, it could have been big. Another consideration here, of course, is the content-to-hiatus ratio, which loses a ton of fans, but I maintain that if BOOM had their shit together, they could have fixed that problem too! and it's so frustrating

My theory is that since Pacat is a SRB superfan, he kind of let her go overboard and realized after the novels were published and he had to move his story forward post-Disarmed that he'd fucked up giving so much freedom to her. Because they called it canon--and he still says it's '80% canon' but it couldn't have happened. So the point of the novels was basically for Pacat to read fanfiction from his favorite author of his OCs--it did nothing positive for the story, the characters, the franchise, or the fans. and LITERALLY!!! I've always thought doing a prequel for the tie-ins made more sense. Like following the fencing team with Harvard, Aiden, Kally, and Tanner would have been so fun, or focusing on Kally and Tanner or Bobby and Dante would have been fun and would have left room for actual plot progression!! It was pure selfishness on the authors' part to do the novels how they did them. And if Pacat would father fangirl over SRB than write a meaningful story, that's his right, but it still bugs me that there was clearly no thought given to the consequences of the novels. So instead of dealing with them, we ignore them and pretend that they're still '80% canon' to make ourselves feel better for our oopsie. hahaaa I have nothing nice to say about SRB or her writing. I always thought Fence deserved a bigger following than it ever got--and maybe having a bigger fanbase and more money being thrown at it would have helped BOOM commit to buying enough ahead to let Pacat and Jo actually work on it consistently and put out content more regularly. It really was setting itself up to be so fun and full of tropes the gays LOVE. i mean, sports 'manga' that's actually queer? All the fun tropes with rivals and 'becoming a team'? The classic character archetypes used smartly and effectively? I genuinely think it would have appealed to all the people who love Check Please and Heartstopper and Yuri on Ice.
