On July 21, 1955, Richard Burton and first wife, Sybil Williams, left England aboard the RMS Queen Mary. Burton’s picture, The Rains of Ranchipur, in which he starred alongside Lana Turner would be released in the coming fall. The couple is shown here catching the Queen Mary boat train at Waterloo Station.

A while ago Falynn K. asked this question on Twitter:

"So on a tall sailing ship you have the mast, and you have the yards across it--is the yard/spar actually attached to the mast, by like i dunno, a pin or something, or is it strictly roped/lashed to it?"

This is a totally reasonable question! A lot of folks who haven't sailed square riggers might think that the yard stays put, but in fact it needs to move up and down the mast so the sails can be fully set. (Y'know how everyone's always talking about halyards? They literally haul the yard up. You're welcome.)

So to answer the question: yards are held loosely to the mast by a looped line strung with large wooden beads called a parrel. The beads roll up the mast as the yard is raised and lowered. Here's a drawover that hopefully clarifies a little:

Once you start explaining things about tall ship anatomy it's hard to stop, so there's a bit more context for how the sails work:

You know, in movies where they get a character to essentially glow up to seduce someone, but then they're really, really bad at flirting? That's Charles, seemingly being assigned by the GPDA to swear, and him essentially becoming a wide-eyed country girl in the big city for the first time during this mission* lmao. He tried so hard to make it look casual, but he practically tripped over himself to bring Max and his penalty up at every opportunity in preparation of dropping the swear bomb and possibly joining him in community service 😭✋️.

Mu Qing ascending is objectively so funny considering Feng Xin and Xie Lian also do. Out of the people in your kingdom who accomplished immortality there’s this guy who used to be your servant but is now on equal rank to you and he‘s super rude now and also thinks you hate him because he remembers when you were 18 and lacked socioeconomic-interpersonal awareness

Realized something else that doesn't make sense in THW.

If Night Furies aren't long-distance fliers and do terrible in the cold... how did Toothless even end up in the archipelago in the first place? A place that's famously close to the arctic circle? A.k.a very, very, very far away from more moderate temperatures and very, very, very cold? Did he just magically spawn there? Is that it? Because by THW's own logic, Toothless should've crashed and died in the ocean long before he met Hiccup.
