hearing annabeth express genuine confusion at the existence of disney world was incredibly heartbreaking. but it raised a good point about just how unprepared she was for a life outside of camp. it makes me wonder how she settled into a public school environment after training as a child soldier for five years straight. i question what her first active shooter drill was like and if the teachers noticed how prepared she seemed for life or death situations in comparison to her english homework. i wonder how she socialized with kids her age, or if she mostly kept to herself because the anxiety of making a misstep in social situation and risk being neglected was near crippling. i think of the quiet moments at home during bedtime ruined by the slightest movement outside and her father finding her keeping watch outside her brothers' bedroom at three in the morning. how heartbreaking is it that annabeth can't find true solace in any environment she's in?

You know, in movies where they get a character to essentially glow up to seduce someone, but then they're really, really bad at flirting? That's Charles, seemingly being assigned by the GPDA to swear, and him essentially becoming a wide-eyed country girl in the big city for the first time during this mission* lmao. He tried so hard to make it look casual, but he practically tripped over himself to bring Max and his penalty up at every opportunity in preparation of dropping the swear bomb and possibly joining him in community service 😭���️.

A while ago Falynn K. asked this question on Twitter:

"So on a tall sailing ship you have the mast, and you have the yards across it--is the yard/spar actually attached to the mast, by like i dunno, a pin or something, or is it strictly roped/lashed to it?"

This is a totally reasonable question! A lot of folks who haven't sailed square riggers might think that the yard stays put, but in fact it needs to move up and down the mast so the sails can be fully set. (Y'know how everyone's always talking about halyards? They literally haul the yard up. You're welcome.)

So to answer the question: yards are held loosely to the mast by a looped line strung with large wooden beads called a parrel. The beads roll up the mast as the yard is raised and lowered. Here's a drawover that hopefully clarifies a little:

Once you start explaining things about tall ship anatomy it's hard to stop, so there's a bit more context for how the sails work:

On the density of trains

As mentioned a few times recently, the density of trains is still unknown — we have no idea whether or not trains can float on water. Unfortunately, as British Rail’s Research Division has been gone for decades, we have no way to find out. Instead, we here at Network Rail have to crowdsource our research, so that we can find out if it is safe to run trains in floods or if we can cut back on expensive bridges and tunnels by simply floating trains across bodies of water. Please let us know your thoughts, and if you have any experimental evidence on the density or solubility of trains please let us know.

i know that in dracula (1897) dracula travels to england on a ship and we get those delightful chapters of him slowly picking off the ship's crew one by one until it crashes on the shore and i know that nosferatu (1922) is basically a straight rip of dracula with the names and locations slightly changed and i know that nosferatu (2024) is pretty much just a higher budget shot-by-shot remake of the original nosferatu but why did they keep the part where count orlock travels to germany from romania by BOAT
