10/2024: Wisconsin Family Trip!
It is funny how life happens. In one month I pass up like 4 trips and in the months after when things "calm" down I go on back to back trips in the same week! I am not sure what killed me more but I am mostly alive still! No regrets though, family reunions are great!
Tumblr media
Monday:
We flew from SNA to PHX in the early afternoon. There was a small layover in Phoenix. The first flight was 1 hour and then the next flight was 3 hours. We flew from PHX to MSN. Both flights went great. We rented a car, a KIA SUV, and man Kia came to play-it was a solid car. It was a 2 hour drive from Madison to Bloomington. There was also a 2 hour time difference, so it was uber late when we got in. One of our family members met us in town and guided us in, which was really nice. We stayed up way too late talking but it has been a minute since I have had such a warm welcome-especially since I have not met many of these people before. (If I did meet them, its been many years and I was very young).
Tuesday:
Waking up the next day, with California being 2 hours behind Wisconsin, was fun. Family members came by that lived down the road or in the next city over. We were told that there was a bakery down in town that was good, so we walked to get some donuts. It was funny, as my family has a reputation so when we walked in-between association or small town news-people looked at us funny. It was really dark when we came in so we took a drive to see the state in daylight. Driving to St Feriole Island was so pretty. Man that is God's Country. We saw the Wisconsin River and the Mississippi River. Villa Louise is nearby so we made plans to tour that later and go to Shihata's Orchard after. Beautiful lot, great products-I can't wait for them to have an online store. We tried Apple Salsa and Jalapeno Berry Jelly. SO GOOD. We toured Villa Louise and I loved it. The house and furniture dated back to 1839. We headed back to the family house. By the time we were back, dinner was done and kids were home from school. The energy a house has when its full of people is amazing. We played some Farkle. We got a family photo, and man that was pretty cool.
Wednesday:
Everyone woke up and we had breakfast. I had a request from back home for Wisconsin Cheese, and really I don't blame them. So we went to Carr Valley Cheese in Fennimore. We hit a thrift store and a coffee shop on the way back. We came back and had dinner with everyone and did more Farkle. We had an early bed time and packed as much as we could the night before.
Thursday:
We got up really early. 2 hour drive from Bloomington to Madison. We dropped off the rental car and went through security. General rule of thumb is to get to an airport 2 hours before the flight leaves. Before we board, they make an announcement that there are some technical issues they are working on. They "fix" them and we board. The flight time gets delayed twice and then we deboard so they can fix the issue. We reboard and then take off AN HOUR LATE. So the original flight we planned to catch got changed around. When we landed we went back to California/Arizona time. Short layover. Then we flew to SNA. It took an hour to get back to my house from the airport, and another hour to get my grandmother home. Funny to think how little ground you cover in 2 hours in california vs wisconsin.
My mom works for American Airlines with her Fiance and set this up to see her mom's side of the family for her mom. We were her first flight trip she set up since she started working there. The weather was supposed to be colder but it was surprisingly warm for this time of year. Most things start to shut down for the season as winter starts to come. I generally enjoyed this trip, some trips feel more like work than relaxing for me. But family is everything and I look forward to seeing them again. Would you go to a family reunion?

LÉGENDES DU JAZZ
RAHSAAN ROLAND KIRK, UN INNOVATEUR HORS PAIR ’’He was an original from the beginning."
- Hank Crawford
Il expliquait: "Now they had him doing all kinds of goofy stuff but he was playing the two horns and he was playing the shit out of them. He was an original from the beginning."
Selon l’animateur et comédien Jay Leno, qui avait souvent accompagné Kirk en tournée, le saxophoniste le présentait en disant : ‘’I want to introduce a young brother who knows the black experience and knows all about the white devils... Please welcome Jay Leno!"
Il avait déclaré au sujet de Kirk: "There’s something about these colourful shamans. They can tease us, but we go along with it, because we know they’re touched by genius, but at the same time there’s a little bit of the snake oil for sale.”
Que dire de plus ?

By: Amy Fredrickson
The illuminator and painter Zanobi di Benedetto di Caroccio degli Strozzi was born into one of the largest and wealthiest families in Florence on 17 November 1412, although during his lifetime the Strozzi family would lose their battle for supremacy of Florence to the Medici. While Zanobi was primarily active as an illuminator, he also produced both private devotional works and altarpieces.
Zanobi, along with his older brother Francesco and sister Maddalena, were orphaned when he was fifteen. There is a lack of documentation regarding his early life, but tax records prove that between 1427 and 1430 he was living with the illuminator Battista di Biagio Sanguigni (1393-1451) in nearby Fiesole. Due to his aristocratic status, he began his training privately with Sanguigni, rather than an apprenticeship in a workshop. Sanguigni and Zanobi collaborated on several projects. The artists remained close, and in 1432 Sanguigni helped pay Maddalena’s dowry when she entered the Augustinian convent of San Gaggio. In total, the duo lived together for between eight and eleven years. Zanobi provided his tutor with financial support for another fourteen years. He also provided provisions and wine, and he even deeded the Strozzi property in Palaiuola to Sanguigni in 1446 when Zanobi moved back to Florence with his wife Nanna di Francesco Strozzi. Sanguigni continued to live in Palaiuola until his death in 1451 when the property reverted back to Zanobi’s brother, Francesco Strozzi.
Due to their close working relationship, Sanguigni and Zanobi have rather similar styles. In Fiesole, the duo connected with Fra Angelico, whom they met at San Domenico, where Fra Angelico was working at the time. In Lives, Vasari included Zanobi in the friar’s biography, claiming that Zanobi was a fervent follower.
Interestingly, due to the regulations of the Florentine guilds, an aristocrat could neither rule the city nor take an active part in politics. Consequently, Zanobi never registered with the Arte dei Medici e Speziali in Florence and was therefore unable to secure commissions under his own name; the majority of his works are collaborations.
When Zanobi arrived in Florence, he may have been a tenant in Pesellino’s workshop, as there are no documents that prove he purchased his own studio until several years later. Another possibility is that he entered some type of formal partnership with Pesellino (c.1422 - 1457). They worked on an altarpiece together, and the main panel is The Assumption of the Virgin located in the National Gallery of Art in Dublin. Scholars have proposed different ideas regarding how much each artist participated in this work. They also worked on an illumination of the Bellum Poenicum from 1446 to 1449.
Between 1446 and 1454, Zanobi collaborated with Filippo di Matteo Torelli on Cosimo de’ Medici’s commission for choir books for the church of San Marco. Fra Angelico reviewed the miniatures according to a document dated 2 May 1449. In 1460, shortly after finishing the choir books, the Medici also ordered an altarpiece for the church of San Girolamo in Fiesole, which was in proximity to their new Villa Medici. In 1463, he began another large commission to illuminate choir books for the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. For this project, he collaborated with Francesco di Antonio del Chierico. It took eleven years to finish these works, even with the help of an entire workshop. In fact, the workshop incorporated several notable Florentine artists, including Cosimo Rosselli and Domenico Ghirlandaio.
While he worked primarily as an illuminator, he left behind several paintings. Zanobi’s only signed work is an Annunciation (c. 1440-1445) for the church of San Miniato al Monte, now housed in the National Gallery, London. The Lanfredini family commissioned this work for their private chapel in San Miniato al Monte. Zanobi depicted a traditional scene with the Virgin seated in prayer and the angel Gabriel announcing that she will bear the Son of God. Above Gabriel he placed a dove to represent the Holy Spirit, and he incorporated the lily as an emblem of the Virgin’s purity and grace. He also included the Lanfredini family arms on the capitals of the columns in the painting, and he concealed his signature, “ZANOBI,” on the border of the Virgin's blue robe.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art also holds an Annunciation in its collection, which demonstrates Fra Angelico’s influence on Zanobi's iconographic choices. His decision to portray the angel Gabriel flying in on clouds is unconventional, yet while working in Fiesole, he may have seen Fra Angelico’s 1425 missal depicting Gabriel in the same manner. Additionally, in 1434, Fra Angelico depicted Gabriel in pink robes in an Annunciation for the convent of Santa Maria Novella. In this work, Gabriel's garb is a similar distinctive pink ensemble adorned with gold embroidery. The painting supports Vasari’s statement that Zanobi worked with Fra Angelico and had an impact on Zanobi’s paintings.
The artist died in his native Florence on 6 December 1468 and is buried in Santa Maria Novella. Zanobi is most remembered for his miniatures in illuminated manuscripts and is considered by some as one of the minor masters of his generation.

Going Underground? Earth-Sheltered Home Is Most Popular of the Week
realtor.com
If natural light isn’t high on your wish list for your next home, we have a prime opportunity for you. This week’s most popular home on realtor.com® is an earth-sheltered structure in the Midwest.
For those unfamiliar with earth-sheltered homes, they’re built into a berm with dirt and sod serving as a roof. And for those who do need to see the sun, a little light does peek through the front of this affordable specimen in Indiana.
It’s a great deal for heating and cooling your home—but it can feel a bit like living underground. Priced at only $160,000 and coming with nearly 4 acres of land, it might be worth finding out just how important the elements are to your overall well-being.
You also clicked on a midcentury classic in the unlikely locale of Knoxville, TN, a cool old farm near Columbus, OH, and three very different homes in Illinois.
So grab a shovel and dig in to the full list of our most popular properties of the week.
10. Casanova # 19, Carmel, CA
Price: $1,200,000 Why it’s here: In picturesque (and pricey) Carmel, it’s a chance to buy one of the cheaper pieces of property in town. There are three adjacent lots for sale, and listing agent Ben Heinrich believes a buyer will likely combine a couple of lots to build a new home. Either way, the tiny cabin currently on this piece of property must stay—Heinrich says it’s deemed historic by the city.
Carmel, CA
realtor.com
———
9. 1104 E Jefferson St, Bloomington, IL
Price: $279,900 Why it’s here: This historic mansion is huge. And at only $46 a square foot, it’s a steal, too. Known as the Wilcox-Henderson Home, the mansion built in 1884 remains “99 percent original,” according to the listing. The stained glass, tile work, and crown moldings evoke another era—this place is truly a bargain for the ages.
Bloomington, IL
realtor.com
———
8. 6501 S County Line Rd, Burr Ridge, IL
Price: $10,950,000 Why it’s here: Known as Villa Taj, this mansion has been making headlines for nearly a decade. Initially listed for $25 million in 2009, the estate soon fell into foreclosure. Then a burst pipe in 2012 flooded the place with 6 million gallons (!) of water. It was eventually purchased by a developer for the low, low price of $3.1 million. Buffed, repaired, and back on the market, it’s looking for a buyer who needs 30,000 square feet of living space and a 22-car garage.
Burr Ridge, IL
realtor.com
———
7. 116 W Beverly Ct, Peoria, IL
Price: $140,000 Why it’s here: The curb appeal of this charming four-bedroom home is readily apparent. Built in 1930, the beautiful brick home has original hardwood and three levels of living space. With over 3,500 square feet to offer, it’s an amazing $39 per square foot.
Peoria, IL
realtor.com
———
6. 324 Radcliffe St, Bristol, PA
Price: $695,000 Why it’s here: The back patio alone should be enough for most buyers. Set along the Delaware River, the backyard oasis lures buyers into this classic home, according to listing agent Hellen Cannon. She says folks who’ve walked through the classic Queen Anne home are “amazed with the authenticity, the taste level, and the fact that it’s right on the river.”
Bristol, PA
realtor.com
———
5. 6475 Lilly Chapel Georgesville Rd, London, OH
Price: $250,000 Why it’s here: Rustic is in right now! Listing agent Karen Evans credits the “Fixer Upper” effect for the popularity of this old barn and farmhouse set on over 5 acres of land.
The “millennial generation is interested in going back to the land,” she says, adding that prospective buyers swarmed this house only 20 minutes outside Columbus.
Evans says they received multiple offers on the farmhouse and accepted the one from a buyer “who wants to take the farm back to its original roots.”
London, OH
realtor.com
———
4. 4590 East Pike, Zanesville, OH
Price: $179,500 Why it’s here: Set on more than an acre of land, this adorable three-bedroom home has been newly updated. We’re most intrigued by the basement, where a man cave (complete with wet bar) beckons.
Zanesville, OH
realtor.com
———
3. 123 Spring Creek St, Lacy Lakeview, TX
Price: $1,200,000 Why it’s here: It’s the “Fixer Upper” “barndominium.” Sliding two spots this week, the home made famous on Season 3 of the popular HGTV show is still attracting an outsize amount of interest.
Lacy Lakeview, TX
realtor.com
———
2. 1536 Lyons Bend Rd, Knoxville, TN
Price: $950,000 Why it’s here: According to listing agent Shannon Foster-Boline, this Mid-Century Modern “is in the heart of Knoxville, but you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere.”
She says the home’s peaceful, tranquil feel is a result of intentional design choices made by architect Bruce McCarty. Built in 1959, this three-bedroom stunner was McCarty’s personal residence and has never been on the market. Set along the waters of the Tennessee River and featuring floor-to-ceiling glass, gorgeous wood cabinetry, and an ideal indoor-outdoor flow, it’s a true Mid-Century Modern gem in the Volunteer State.
Knoxville, TN
realtor.com
———
1. 3930 W 700 N, Huntington, IN
Price: $160,000 Why it’s here: Listing agent Kyle Ness credits his home inspector for this home’s popularity. He says the inspector shared photos and a link of this earth-sheltered home on his Facebook page, and then the house went “pseudo-viral.” The place has bounced on and off the market for a year, but Ness isn’t daunted by the difficultly of finding a buyer who doesn’t mind living underground.
Ness says he’s had plenty of experience with homes other agents haven’t been able to sell, adding that he’ll bring that expertise to this atypical house. He says the nearly 4 acres of land around the home are a boon. For a buyer looking for something different, this is the place, he says. “It’ll be the easy way or the hard way—it’ll sell one way or the other.”

When is spring break? Dates, destinations and details to help plan your trip
For many students, spring break, that American college tradition and much anticipated vacation, is the first opportunity in the year to plan a memorable getaway.
Checking your spring break dates is the important first step in planning your own special trip, and we’ve included an extensive list of dates for universities and colleges across the United States at the end of this article. Scroll through to find your school, and start thinking about destinations.
  Spring break month
In general, spring break month is February, March or April, depending on where you are in the country, and the specific name your institution gives it may also vary. Most institutions, like the University of Texas and California State University, opt for a spring break during March. Smaller numbers, including the likes of Augusta State University, Georgia, hold their spring recess in April, while for others, such as Loyola University Chicago, it’s February.
How long does spring break last?
If you’re wondering how long college spring break is, it’s generally one week, though some schools may schedule a two-week vacation.
  College spring break destinations
The best spring break getaway depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is, so we’ve put together a range of spring break ideas to provide some inspiration. They include some of the most popular destinations, spring break road trips, unique locations and cheap ideas. See what appeals to you.
  Top road trip destinations
South Padre Island, Texas
With long-lasting appeal, this is one of the most popular locations for spring break in the U.S., and easily accessible for southern colleges.
Panama City, Florida
A white-sand destination that’s a big hit with students looking to bask in Florida sunshine.
Daytona Beach, Florida
Perhaps the original beach party destination, it’s easy to get to from the East Coast and Midwest.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Besides Vegas’ famous appeal for partying, there are actually great things to do in the surrounding area, too.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
With miles of golden East Coast sand, Myrtle Beach is also an affordable option.
New Orleans, Louisiana
The Big Easy offers Bourbon Street and Uptown for nights out, plenty of shrimp gumbo and comfortable 70-degree springtime temperatures.
Manhattan Beach, California
A beautiful Southern California beach town with surfing, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.
For more information about these and other road trip destination ideas, check out our spring break cities and destinations articles, and the road trip planner.
What to pack: Don’t forget the essentials
It’s easy to forget the little things that make for a smooth trip – read “Packing the essentials for your road trip” for items to take for the journey. Not least of these is food: have a look at “Road trip: Food for thought when you’re traveling” if you like to snack.
  5 popular international destinations
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico This city is firmly on the spring break map thanks to its beaches, all-inclusive hotels, private villas and entertainment.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic is now a top destination for spring-breakers. Punta Cana offers a typically tropical setting with good value.
Montego Bay, Jamaica Mo-Bay, as it’s known to the locals, may not be quite as laid back as normal when spring break arrives. Besides the nightlife, there are great watersport opportunities.
Cancun, Mexico A long-time spring break getaway, the Hotel Zone draws students from all over the world, not just America.
Acapulco, Mexico Located between the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains and Acapulco Bay, you’ll find beaches, history and a high-energy atmosphere.

NadaMoo! recalls 26,000 pints of Strawberry Cheesecake Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert
Little Red Rooster Ice Cream Company, d/b/a NadaMoo! (“NadaMoo!”) announced a limited recall of approximately 26,000 pints of its Strawberry Cheesecake Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert because they contain an undeclared almond ingredient.
The recalled products are pints of NadaMoo! Strawberry Cheesecake Non-dairy Frozen Dessert that were distributed to select distributors and retailers beginning February 19, 2019. The recalled products have a “Best By” date of 08/09/2020 printed at the bottom of the pint. In addition, the recalled pints will also have a UPC code of “854758001020” listed below the barcode on the back of the pint. To help identify if a pint of NadaMoo! Strawberry Cheesecake is impacted by this recall, please visit the site NadaMoo! created at www.nadamoo.com/March2019Recall
No consumer has reported an allergic reaction to date.
No other NadaMoo! products or flavors are recalled. NadaMoo! wants to reassure customers that Strawberry Cheesecake pints not labeled with the expiration date listed above are not affected by the recall and therefore can be fully enjoyed rather than discarded.
The recall was initiated as soon as it was discovered that the pie crust inclusions in the Strawberry Cheesecake product containing almond flour as an ingredient was inadvertently filled into packaging that did not declare that ingredient, potentially exposing consumers to an undeclared allergen.
A list of stores that may have received the impacted product can be found below:
