She can feel the silent weight of her companion’s on her shoulders and spine, questioning without utterance out of respect for her comfort. But River is too focused on the head held aloft by her hand. Too busy remembering the trophy room. “Parents like to put their kids drawings on the wall, but my grandmother used to make a game out of decapitating our assigned targets... Bring the one with the most horror-struck expression, you’d earn a gift or request from her; and your kill on her wall. But really, all of us just wanted her to acknowledge us, even if only for a day. I don’t even realize I go for the head like that. Just muscle instinct now, you know?”

“And you were the best of them all, correct? River, those cuts are astonishingly pristine.” Kira’s right. The years have honed her skill with the blade quite well.

“No. A couple times, but not always.” she responds, quietly, and her hand moves to shut the wide eyes of a face frozen in terror and pain. Ashamed. The small scar at her throat tingles, and she ignores it. “…Gemma was.”
