i seriously need to write them down because gabe being adrian's nepo baby is so funny and endearing, i love the concept sm, so here's the ideas i do remember!

i think a lot of their interactions would largely depend on where they are in their respective stories - a gabriela from the early chapters of ID is different from a gabriela at the end of ID, as is with adrian. but i generally like to position their characterizations as adrian already in his senator era and gabriela somewhere along mid-ID where she's met MC and is warming up to cas but is still dealing a lot with her monster complex.

when meeting adrian (and the rest of the bb gang) gabriela is super awkward at first but her people pleasing, generally friendly instincts kick in and adrian senses it a mile away. mainly because he's seen it a lot in himself. so comes the coaxing out of some problems and insecurities gabe has.

adrian finds out they're super alike in that monster complex thing and just latches onto gabe like a nursing mom cat does to an abandoned kitten. his pseudo-daughter now. and while initially gabriela is awkward around this she warms up and genuinely admires adrian and his work.

speaking of adrian's work! i like to envision gabriela taking a more active role in raines corp especially since adrian's busy doing senator things. she always wanted to contribute good to the world and helping around raines corp and their intiatives is fulfilling for her. adrian also loves that she's active and always takes her ideas into account. she also loves helping around with jax/lily at the shadow den (:

some misc scenarios:

mutual fascination with each other's differences in being a vampire. what do you mean you have silver eyes instead of red ones. what do you mean you created a serum that temporarily makes you human. can i have it? (no. she cant.)

shopping! gabriela feels awkward about it at first but adrian goes "its fine im literally a billionnaire" and while she tries to not be too frivolous about her spending. she does learn to indulge every once in a while. thank you adrians credit card.

gabriela totally loves blades and makes adrian watch "the swords show" (it's blades, adrian) with her. their favorite is nia.

speaking of blades: gabriela dressing up as nia and adrian as scholar vash. cue dramatic reenacting of vash dying where none of them can take it seriously and adrian keeps laughing even though hes supposed to be fakedying HSHHSJDJDJDJ

adrian really trying to make gabriela's birthday special once finding out that she never really got to celebrate it properly because of her upbringing. lily helps plan 😁

adrian also brings her to her first dark solstice. gabriela hears from kamilah that adrian is still hung up around the holidays because of his family so gabriela really tries to make their first solstice together special, and the ones after that as well. kamilah appreciates this a lot and really loves seeing adrian happy with his new pseudo daughter LOL

on a funnier note: "so adrian. there's someone i met back in my world and i think i really like them 😳👉👈" "this is just like when i met my wife...."

Mun Junghyun has been alive for 300 years. Or alive might be the wrong word to use. Junghyun’s a vampire. Has been for 282 years. He was bitten and turned when he was 18 years old. When he was first turned, he had to hide in the shadows, doing everything he could to not be found out. In today’s day and age, though, humans are a rarity while mystical supernatural creatures are the common norm. Through the years the supernatural creatures took over the world, with them becoming more and more common soon humans and supernaturals began falling in love and as the supernatural creatures' DNAs were stronger most children were born as supernatural creatures. Because of this, Junghyun didn’t have to worry about moving around or hiding anymore whenever it would become suspicious as to why he wasn’t aging. 

Throughout his 300 years of being alive, Junghyun has never once been in love. Not even when he was still a human. All around him, he saw people falling in love left and right. He yearned to find someone who would make him feel as happy as the fairies who danced in the sky or the wolves who roamed the forest at night. He hoped and wished that he would soon stumble upon the person who would let him know how it felt to be in love and to be loved. 

In the heart of Crestwood High, a place where the bustling halls echoed with teenage chatter and the scent of youth hung in the air, Junghyun found his immortal existence forever changed. His eyes met the shy gaze of an unassuming girl named (Y/n). In the midst of the bustling student body, her quiet presence was a beacon of calm amidst the storm. Her timid smile held a depth of kindness that intrigued him, and her eyes, though often cast downward, shone with an inner light that pulled at something deep within him. As he observed her from afar, he felt an inexplicable pull, an unseen force that drew him closer with each passing day. 

Every stolen glance, every accidental meeting in the school library, fueled the burgeoning emotions in his undead heart. Junghyun, the three centuries-old vampire, was falling helplessly and irrevocably in love with the quiet girl who, unbeknownst to her, had rekindled the long-lost warmth in his frozen veins. 

Junghyun walked into the library searching for the girl he longed to hold, though he had never truly spoken to her, he always had a deep desire to be close to her. He easily found her as his heightened senses allowed him to find her scent entangled with the scent of the books and the 78 other people in the library. As he walked into the aisle where (Y/n) stood, Junghyun smiled as he finally had a chance to speak with her. (Y/n) stood on her tiptoes trying to reach for a certain book, yet no matter how hard she tried to stretch herself, she could not reach the book. Junghyun approached her quietly, he gently reached over her head and put his hand on the book she was trying to reach. 

“Is this the book that you need?” His silky voice sent a shiver down (Y/n)’s spine, yet it also brought her comfort as it was filled with warmth and care. (Y/n) turned her head and looked up at the boy who was standing behind her, she internally gasped at how beautiful the boy was. “Yes, thank you,” She whispered. Junghyun only gave her a warm smile in response as he brought the book down and handed it to the girl whose heart was beating just a little bit quicker than before. “Here you go, need any other book?” (Y/n) looked down at the floor. 

(Y/n) recognized the boy in front of her now that she had a clear view of him. Mun Junghyun. A vampire. Often found around Lee Jeonghyeon, a fellow vampire, and Park Hanbin, a werewolf. (Y/n) had noticed that Junghyun often appeared at places where she would hang out, the library, and the rose garden a little east of the school’s backyard. Truth be told. She didn’t mind his company, (Y/n) often felt uneasy around most people it didn’t matter if they were human, fairy, vampire, werewolf, or anything else, but Junghyun never once made her feel scared or unsettled. 

“Actually,” (Y/n) began but she stopped as she didn’t want to burden Junghyun, he probably offered out of courtesy, she thought. “Yes?” Junghyun encouraged her to continue, his smile ever so friendly. “I do have two more books I need for my literature essay. But you don’t have to help me get them, I don’t want to burden you,” “Nonsense, now which ones do you need?” Junghyun’s smile widened a bit more, happy that he found the perfect opportunity to finally speak with the girl he was so intrigued by. 

(Y/n) allowed Junghyun to help her out after he gave her another persuading smile and a wink. Junghyun insisted on holding the books for her as they walked around the library searching for the books that she needed. This interaction led to the two speaking a bit more frequently, every once in a while when Junghyun showed up at the library he would sit and read beside (Y/n), or the times when he was in the rose garden when (Y/n) walked over there, they would sit by the fountain just talking about their days. Before they knew it, the two had become friends. 

Junghyun yearned for an even deeper connection. He wished he could hold (Y/n) in his arms, hug her, kiss her, protect her, and show her parts of the world she didn’t know existed. Throughout his 300 years of living, he had never once felt this way about someone. He recognized some feelings as possessiveness, the feelings that told him to swoop her up and hide her away from everyone else. Junghyun never wanted to act on these feelings, though that proved to be harder than he thought. 

Junghyun, despite his outgoing and kind demeanor, grappled with the innate instincts that came with his vampire nature. He was well aware of the darkness that lurked within him, the primal urges that occasionally clawed at the surface. Yet, his love for (Y/n) was a beacon of light that kept those instincts at bay. He tried his best to hold them back, fearing that if he ever let his guard down, she would be frightened by the depths of his true nature. He cherished their friendship and the connection they shared, cherishing the moments of laughter and understanding they found in each other. Every day, he fought his vampiric urges, determined to be the person she saw - the sweet, outgoing boy who made her smile. It was a constant battle, one he faced for the sake of their friendship and the burgeoning love he felt for (Y/n). A shiver danced down her spine, raising goosebumps on her skin, and a sense of impending danger washed over her like a tidal wave. Confusion and fear clouded her thoughts, and her senses heightened, making every rustle of leaves and distant sound seem magnified, intensifying her anxiety. Instinctively, she clutched at her chest, her eyes widening with alarm as she scanned the garden, searching for Junghyun. The world around her seemed to blur as her eyes fell on a dark figure approaching her. She didn’t know who it was, all she knew was that it wasn’t Junghyun. A knot of unease tightened in her stomach, leaving her paralyzed with fear, unknowingly mirroring the danger Junghyun felt rushing towards her.

As Junghyun dashed into the rose garden, his heart pounded in his chest like a drum of war, each beat echoing the dread and determination that surged through him. His breath came in ragged gasps, and his eyes, normally warm and inviting, blazed with a fierce protectiveness. The sight that met his eyes struck him like a lightning bolt. There, under the fading light of the afternoon sun, (Y/n) lay unconscious, a frail figure amidst the vibrant roses. His eyes narrowed with a mix of fear and anger as he took in the scene – an unknown vampire standing over her, a sinister smirk playing on his lips.

Rage, pure and unbridled, coursed through Junghyun's veins, eclipsing his usual calm demeanor. The realization that someone dared to harm the person he cherished most awakened the primal instincts he fought so hard to control. His fangs elongated, and his nails sharpened into deadly claws. The world around him seemed to blur, his focus narrowing to the threat before him. With a feral growl, he lunged at the intruder, his movements swift and precise. Every fiber of his being screamed for retribution, demanding justice for the innocent girl lying defenseless at his feet. Junghyun's protectiveness transformed into a ferocious determination, vowing to vanquish the menace and shield (Y/n) from any harm, his love for her fueling his unwavering resolve.

Time seemed to stop as he fought the vampire who had dared harm (Y/n). Junghyun couldn’t tell how long they fought for, all he knew was that he would kill that man. He scratched, hit, kicked, and bit the man with every chance he had. The man did a number on Junghyun too, but he felt no pain, adrenaline coursing through his cold veins, all to keep (Y/n) safe. The sun had set, casting the sky into a dark blue hue as the stars began showing themselves to the world. At that time, the man finally fell without getting back up. Junghyun kneeled beside (Y/n), panting, out of breath from the fight and from the fear of losing the only girl he had ever loved. 

With trembling hands and a heart heavy with fear, he gently cradled her in his arms, her fragile form a stark contrast to the fierce determination that had just fueled his fight. Tears welled in his eyes, spilling down his cheeks unchecked, as he looked down at her pale face, willing her to wake up, to be okay.

His voice broke into desperate, whispered pleas, his words a fervent prayer to whatever forces governed life and death. "Please, (Y/n), stay with me," he choked out, his voice raw with emotion. He pressed his lips to her forehead, his tears mingling with her skin, a silent testimony to his anguish. His grip on her tightened as if he could will his strength into her, his love and desperation pouring into her unconscious form. The world around him faded into insignificance, the only thing that mattered was the fragile heartbeat he clung to, the proof that she was still with him.

At that moment, Junghyun was no longer the supernatural being with centuries of existence; he was just a young man, pleading for the life of the girl he loved, willing to give anything, even his own existence, to ensure she would open her eyes and smile at him once more.

The world stood still for Junghyun as he held (Y/n) in his arms, his desperate pleas hanging in the air like a silent prayer. And then, just when hope seemed like a flickering candle in the dark, a faint tremor coursed through her arm, so subtle that only he, with his heightened senses, could perceive it. As (Y/n) blinked away the haze of unconsciousness, she found herself enveloped in Junghyun's warm, protective embrace. The pain, both physical and emotional, surged through her body, making her acutely aware of her fragile mortality. He bit down, his fangs sinking into her skin. As her life essence flowed into him, he closed his eyes, focusing all his strength and willpower on the transformation. Time seemed to stretch, every second feeling like an eternity as he willed the process to be successful. He murmured words of love against her skin, his breath mingling with the scent of her blood, a fervent prayer for the universe to grant them this chance at eternity.

He wished with every fiber of his being that he had managed to turn her in time, to bind her fate to his and grant her the immortality he possessed. He held onto the hope that their love, pure and unwavering, would be enough to guide her through the threshold between life and undeath, forever intertwining their destinies in the darkness.

The transformation would take hours until it was fully complete, Junghyun gently lifted (Y/n) into his arms as he began walking to his apartment. He couldn’t keep her out there in the cold night to heal, no it would be better for her to be somewhere comfortable. 

With great care, Junghyun cradled the unconscious (Y/n) in his arms, her fragile form a stark contrast to his supernatural strength. With determined steps, he carried her to his apartment, a place where he felt the most secure, hoping it would offer her the comfort and safety she needed to heal.

Entering his apartment, he laid her down on a soft, plush couch, gently arranging her limbs to ensure she was as comfortable as possible. The dim light cast a soft glow over the room, creating a serene atmosphere amidst the shadows. Junghyun moved quietly, his every action careful and deliberate, his focus entirely on her well-being.

He fetched clean, soft blankets, covering her with a gentle touch, tucking her in as if shielding her from the world's harsh realities. Nearby, he set up a chair, vowing to keep a vigilant watch over her as she rested. The air in the apartment was filled with a mix of anticipation and worry, Junghyun's eyes never leaving her face as he waited for any sign of her awakening.

When (Y/n) finally stirred, her eyes fluttering open in the soft light of Junghyun's apartment, his heart leaped with relief. The exhaustion that had etched lines of worry on his face instantly melted away, replaced by a profound sense of gratitude and joy. His eyes, normally so composed, glimmered with emotion as he watched her regain consciousness.

"(Y/n)," he breathed, his voice barely more than a whisper, filled with a mixture of tenderness and awe. He reached out, his fingers brushing against her cheek as if assuring himself that she was truly awake and safe. "You're awake," he said, a soft smile playing on his lips, his voice filled with overwhelming relief. He carefully helped her sit up, his touch gentle yet reassuring, his eyes never leaving her face.

"You had me so worried," he admitted, his voice laced with vulnerability. "I thought I had lost you. I'm just... I'm so glad you're okay." His words were filled with sincerity, his relief palpable as he held her hand in his as if grounding himself in the reality of her presence. The depth of his feelings for her was laid bare, his love shining through his eyes like a beacon in the dark.

Confusion flickered in (Y/n)’s eyes as she tried to make sense of her surroundings. The last thing she remembered was the pain, the darkness closing in, and now she found herself in this unfamiliar yet strangely comforting place.

"Where... where am I?" she murmured, her voice barely audible, her gaze shifting around the room before finally settling on Junghyun. His face, etched with relief and worry, came into focus, and her eyes widened with recognition. There was a flicker of familiarity, a sense of trust that made her heart race.

"You're in my apartment," Junghyun said gently, his voice a soothing balm to her disoriented mind. "You passed out, and I brought you here to help you heal."

She instinctively touched her neck, expecting to feel pain, but there was only a dull ache. Confusion clouded her eyes as she spoke, her voice laced with a mix of awe and bewilderment, "But... how am I here? I remember... I remember feeling like I was dying."

Junghyun hesitated for a moment before he took a deep breath, his eyes searching hers. "I turned you," he confessed, his tone soft but laden with a weighty truth. "I couldn't bear to lose you. I wanted to save you."

(Y/n)'s eyes widened in astonishment, her hand trembling as she tried to comprehend the enormity of his revelation. The realization dawned on her that she was no longer human, that she had crossed a threshold into a life she hadn't chosen. A whirlwind of emotions – fear, curiosity, and gratitude – surged within her. She looked at Junghyun, a mix of confusion and acceptance in her eyes, as she whispered, "Thank you... for saving me."

In the days that followed, (Y/n) remained in Junghyun's apartment, her new sanctuary and training ground as she adjusted to her newfound existence. Under Junghyun's patient guidance, she learned the intricacies of being a vampire: the heightened senses, the strength that now flowed through her veins, and the insatiable thirst for blood that required delicate control. It was a challenging journey, filled with moments of frustration and temptation, but Junghyun was there every step of the way, offering his wisdom and support.

Junghyun taught her the importance of restraint, helping her hone her abilities and keep her instincts in check. As the days passed, (Y/n) grew stronger and more confident, her bond with Junghyun deepening with each shared experience.

Yet, amid the challenges, there were moments of unexpected beauty. Junghyun showed her the wonders of the night, the hidden corners of the city where vampires roamed freely, unseen by prying eyes. They explored the world together, embracing the darkness as their shared realm, finding solace in the understanding that only they could truly comprehend.

In those quiet moments, (Y/n) also discovered the depth of Junghyun's love. He was not just her mentor but her confidant, her rock in the storm of her new life. His unwavering belief in her, his ability to see the human within her vampire form, reassured her in ways she couldn't explain. Their connection became a source of strength, a testament to the power of love in the face of the unknown.

As the nights turned into weeks, (Y/n) found herself not just surviving but thriving in her new existence, with Junghyun by her side, guiding her with a steady hand and a heart full of devotion. Together, they embraced the eternal night, finding comfort and purpose in the shared journey of two souls bound by an immortal love.

WIPs: Choices Edition

So the last time I did this I didn't actually read the rules and then I got really confused when I didn't get a bunch of asks. That's on me. Should have read and followed the rules. @lizzybeth1986 sent me an ask about my Choices WIPs and I was torn between actually following the rules this time or talking about fic in detail which is kinda what the ask was about. In an effort to a) actually respond this century and b) keep it (relatively) short, I split the difference. I talked more about the WIPs I found interesting. I listed the ones I didn't. Actually I listed the ones I found deeper in my Drive because I do not keep my WIPs in a separate folder from my other documents and it's just chaos in there but we don't need to talk about that.

Rules that you totally should follow if you want to play: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! Then tag as many people as you have WIPs.

Random Fics - The Royal Romance

Bustin’ Out - Paring: Drake/MC (platonic), Liam/MC (romantic)

This was a fic where Halle was pregnant (like 7 months along) but was put on short-term bed rest due to an early labor scare. She has been medically cleared to get out of bed rest, but Liam would prefer that she stays on bed rest. Halle goes stir-crazy so she escapes and drags Drake along with her. I wish I actually finished this one if only for the funny. This is the funniest I have ever written Liam. The blocker here was the ending or the lack thereof. I think if I could wrap up the ending and decide on the Drake/Kiara subplot I could still publish this…regardless of what actually happened in the rest of the Royal Romance series.

Do that Baby’s Hair - Pairing: Liam/MC

This was a fic to actually piggyback a fic I actually did release called Wash Day. In this fic, it sees Liam and Halle in the future with their children and essentially Liam isn't exactly fully keeping up with promises he made in the first fic and Halle seeks to change that. I think I got the first half done but was not done writing the second half.

Not My Children - Pairing: Liam/MC

This is a future fic where Liam and Halle are confronted with the significant level of scrutiny their children will face in the media. Kind of inspired by the discourse that happened with Blue Ivy when people saw her hair looking less than pristine and how harsh and swift the judgement came. Got through the first half then stopped.

Phone Grab - Pairing: Liam/MC

This is a random fic where I guess I was working under the idea of what would happen if Maxwell took Liam's phone and started answering his texts (security breaches aside obviously). Of course Drake gets involved and eventually Hana and even Kiara does as well. Hilarity ensues. I am actually open to brainstorming this one for ideas to see where this one goes.

Hana Persy Drabble - Hana/OC

What it says on the tin. This was supposed to be a drabble featuring Hana and one of my favorite OCs, @lizzybeth1986's Persy. It was meant to be a gift for her at some point but I got blocked on how I wanted to end.

Fic Series

In the Dark: A Bloodbound x TRR Crossover AU

These fics are related to a series I did with Misha where she writes chapters for her TRR MC and I write the chapters for my BloodBound MC. The series starts kind of at the beginning of TRR but about halfway through BloodBound Book 1 (specifically when the BloodBound Gang rescue Adrian from The Baron's prison). Of course things get more complicated when the Cordonian vampires get involved with all of the mess and in-fighting happening between the NYC vampires. It pulls a lot contextually from The Crown and The Flame as well.

Choosing Darkness - Pairing: Olivia/Liam (unrequited)

This fic was a companion fic to a crossover AU fic I did with Misha. It’s the backstory of how Olivia got Turned into a vampire after Liam’s forced Turning. It also was interspersed with background on how Cordonia during the time of Queen Kendra and ‘em dealt with the rampant new vampire problem and why Turnings in Cordonia look they way they do now. The fic was almost a completed draft. I just had to nail down some timelines and flesh out the descriptions.

In the Dark, pt 6: Aminah

This chapter picks up where we left with Aminah after she and Adrian get conditional refuge from the Cordonian Vampires. Adrian needs to pick up the serum back from his company which has been seized after what happened at the Vampire ball thingy...its been a while since I have read BloodBound. Since Adrian cannot get it himself, Drake and Aminah are tasked with retrieving it. Aminah and Drake have verbal exchanges. They get ambushed while at Adrian's office. Jax saves them. I just hadn't worked out the details of the ambushing part. I am pretty sure it would have been fin though.

Liam x Halle Pregnancy/Baby series [The Royal Romance]

This was supposed to be a series of one-shots chronicling Liam and Halle's journey to become parents. It has some twists and turns but ends happily...as Liam and Halle deserve. The first two fics, A Wish and A Life-Changing Moment have already been released. It was the rest of the series that have been in progress. I think what made me want to explore Halle and Liam becoming parents (besides wanting to see them have a baby) is writing them in scenarios where they are not in total alignment whether its them essentially wanting the same thing but feeling very differently what their obstacles and challenges are (like in A Wish) or being in completely different headspaces but despite everything they work through those issues and come back together stronger for it.

A Devastating Loss

This would have been the next part. As you can guess by the title, this would cover Halle and Liam dealing with a miscarriage.

Call for Help 1 & Call for Help 2

These two fics are not immediately after A Devastating Loss, there is a fic between them (that I am honestly surprised doesn't have a draft that I can find). These fics show Liam and Halle working through the aftermath of the miscarriage in therapy. Part 1 was Halle's session and Part 2 was Liam's session.

Driara Series

This was another series of one shots that was supposed to examine the complicated relationship between Kiara and Drake. I actually started this with Bold. While some of the fics do take place in Drake's point of view, it's all about Kiara. I meant for this series to feature Kiara in a way where she was the primary focus, she was cast in a role where she was a central figure of desire, she wasn't a villain (at least to anyone else but herself), and she was given the space to be messy and complicated. Those were the goals of the series. I wanted to do this series in particular because at the time both in canon and the fandom Kiara gets a lot of disrespect (and this was before her part of keeping Liam and MC away from their baby which takes place in later books--I know after that became a plot point, Kiara would never know piece in and out of canon--let alone the fandom--again). So this was a fix it series where it was all about her. What does she want? Where does she fit in? Who does she choose love? It was about getting to see her navigate those questions as her perspective changes from operating in should to operating in want. Now that I am reading the drafts I am getting all kinds of ideas again...but I haven't finished the rest of the TRR series...Very torn.

Avoidance

This was supposed to be the next fic after Bold which takes place from Drake's perspective. He is in a rough headspace because as much as he wants to be there for Liam after Liam's father dies he can't stop thinking about Kiara and their kiss in Bold. He wants to dig deeper into that but Kiara keeps avoiding him and eventually drops out of the Unity Tour. He also gets in his own way when given the opportunity...Drake is a mess. This is actually mostly written, it's just the details that have to be fleshed out a bit more.

New Options

There are 2 fics in between this and Avoidance. This takes place during the Lantern Festival and it's told from Kiara's perspective. At this point she has been getting a lot more attention from Rashad. Drake has been trying to get closer too, but in less obvious ways. Drake and Kiara do share a moment when lighting their lanterns together but Rashad interrupts them. I have barely started this fic TBH.

Confused

This fic is also in Kiara's POV and take's place during Halle's Bachelorette Party. Kiara has been connecting with Rashad more but is unsure of what she should do in the face of Drake actively pursuing her in a way that he hasn't before. In the midst of all of this Kiara and Drake are tasked by Madeleine to essentially keep Liam and Halle from getting too wild since Halle barred Madeleine from participating in her bachelorette. This involves drunk shenanigans from both Liam and Halle.

Wedding AU

This was a series that kind of started off as a fill I did for an ask where Liam and Halle meet as guests at Leo's vow renewal and it kind of grew from there.

out of curiosity, what made you decide to make this into a full fledged visual novel instead of just writing a fic? esp since afaik there hasn't been a demand/outcry for more bloodbound

(this ended up being rlly long, so I'm putting it under a cut. if you don't want to read all of that, the tl;dr is I've been working on an spec adaptation of Bloodbound since 2021, I've been making edits with Choices assets for a little over a year now, and I started messing around with ren'py during my stint in the now no longer active @nightboundthesecond project, and this spinoff is the culmination of all of those things bc I wanted to do something w them).

Anyways, here's the long version:

So...I kind of already did. Sort of.

In summer of 2021, I was going through a pretty bad depressive episode and ended up rereading Bloodbound (which got me back into the fandom as a whole, more on that in a sec). When the dust cleared, I began really heavily reconsidering what exactly I was doing with my life.

I'd been toying with the possibility of doing a film MFA of some kind, but I was worried I didn't have the skillset to get into any grad programs. So, I began teaching myself how to write screenplays by adapting Bloodbound into a spec TV series. From August 2021 to April 2022, I wrote twenty-eight episodes, with three rounds of revisions, which really strengthened my abilities as a writer. I'm currently at a T10 film school getting an MFA. I wouldn't be where I am without doing that. Part of my love for Bloodbound stems from the fact that it quite literally changed my life.

The very nature of turning a book into a screenplay/teleplay is that you have to restructure a lot of plot points so they fit in better with the new medium. With a TV adaptation, you also usually have to build onto the source material. For Bloodbound, that meant fleshing things out and creating new characters to move the plot forward. It also meant exploring things that either happened offscreen or were only brief scenes.

And so when it came time to write episodes for the book 2 adaptation, the huge aspect of that was going into New York City and seeing what Gaius was doing during his hostile takeover. And since I had very little to work with from the source material, I had to come up with a lot of stuff off the cuff. And as I put those storylines together, I was like there's actually some pretty interesting stuff here. This visual novel is based off of that stuff.

@clansayeed and his fantastic reimaginings of Bloodbound and Nightbound had been on my radar for a while at this point, but I wasn't aware of the fake caps he made until I actually checked out his tumblr account. I thought they were really fucking cool. As a little private celebration for finishing the third round of edits for season 1 (and to let myself take a break), I decided to teach myself how to make fakecaps and recreate a few scenes from my adaptation in the Choices format:

I found out that I really enjoyed reworking assets into new outfits and character designs--lowkey, putting on a podcast or a video essay, opening up pixlr, and just making stuff became one of my go-to ways to unwind in the midst of mfa apps and life in general--, so I started making more fandom service stuff for fun and posting them on Reddit. I made a variety of stuff: role reversal AU edits, general dress up stuff, and of course... "on the set of [choices book]: the tv show" fake caps.

I feel like you're not really supposed to say this, but it was kind of validating to me that a lot of those posts did like. Decent numbers. And that kind of motivated me to get better at doing it, especially in the beginning.

And then...It Lives Within dropped. And I think that shifted a lot of how people--myself included--considered what they could do within a fandom space like Choices. Like, if we could make our own shit, why not? I was really intrigued by the idea, and so when there were calls for writers and sprite artists for a Nightbound project, I jumped at the opportunity.

(As a side note, I think the fact that now there are people within the fandom making their own sequels/spinoffs/whatever is gonna be rlly interesting for the general ecosystem of the Choices fandom and its future, but that's a convo for another time lol)

While the team I was on is no longer working on a sequel, being part of that group did a lot for me, and I look back on being part of that really fondly. I think we all were kind of picking up whatever we needed to do, regardless of if it was what we signed on for. For me, that meant teaching myself how to use Ren'py. The thing was, this was still in the really early stages of development, which meant I didn't have a lot of story to play with. So...

I was kind of like. Fuck it. Let me try my own thing out.

The original idea was actually a prequel set in the 1910s, as I'd done an MC set and an LI set based on that very premise, but the problem was that there are so few assets from that time period, and asset creation has never been my strong suit. But then, I thought back to the adaptation I'd been working on.

Some of the strongest writing I think I've ever done was in the episodes where the primary storylines were following Gaius's takeover of New York. I think a lot of the themes of the second book came out in those moments. And as cool as it would be, as much as I've fantasized about it, I don't think Bloodbound: The TV Show is ever happening. So it made sense for me to rework that into a visual novel spinoff.

In terms of the actual framing of this story, I spent a lot of time in the Bloodbound tags in the early days of working on my adaptation. I was deep in those tags. And it's really interesting to see what people expected it to be before its release. Part of it was the assumption of a Clan sorting system. Obviously, that wasn't actually the case.

Additionally, I think a lot of people were frustrated by the fact that Bloodbound's MC isn't really given the option to just. Be bad. Which then makes moments like this super jarring:

So, I decided to put everything I'd learned together. I was working on the GUI/character creation features for Nightbound (side note, the GUI in this game isn't an absolutely perfect replication of the Choices GUI yet and won't be for the demo, but we're getting there), I had a ton of edits I'd made that I wasn't using for anything, and I had a story that I knew could be reworked into an arc about a new vampire in New York City during Gaius's coup.

But with this project in general, it's less about a demand for a sequel/midquel/spinoff within the fandom and more like. I noticed that there were some things people wanted out of Bloodbound and didn't get, and trying to give it to them, because I wanted those things too, and I felt like I had the means to create that. When I've talked to IRL friends about this project (non of whom play Choices), I've just been like "yeah it's a visual novel fanfic" because...it's a visual novel fanfic.

So. That's why.

(This was super long (and felt a little self centered, sorry!), but if you read all of that, I hope it all made sense. All of this is to say that this has been a labor of love for a book series I've been living with for a year and a half, and I want to get part of what I've done with it out of my head. I hope you all like it.)
