John 1:5
"God's preference is to be heard and God's preference is to be understood."
Blessed Pentecost! God is a God who wants to speak to you and They don't prefer one language. They are so, so much bigger than a pulpit or the church or Sunday mornings. God will speak in whatever ways you can hear; let yourself listen to the tiny whispers and the little gestures and the tongues that sound foreign to those around you. Hear Them in everything, no matter where They're speaking from.
It's so special to me that Pentecost was the last Sunday before pride month this year. God called me back through the exploration of my own queerness; He spoke to me through the radical, transgressive love I saw. Letting that part of myself out taught me how to embrace God's creation, including myself, just as it is. My religion taught me how to love recklessly and without hesitation, my queerness taught me how to love even the people I am told not to.
The Holy Spirit is reaching for you, desperate to anoint you with Their light. Let yourself reach back.

𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐆𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐥
Pentecost Sunday
Mass during the Day
Jn 20:19-23
On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Pentecost or Shavuot?
Guest blogger Linda Morris (aka Batnabas)
What is the difference? Is it important? Those of you who know me, or have read other things I have written, will not be surprised that my answer is ‘Yes.’ An emphatic ‘Yes.’ Because this is partially to blame for the church – in general – moving away from its Hebraic roots.
Pentecost is an important date in the Christian calendar. We sing songs proclaiming that God poured out His Holy Spirit on that day and “the church was born.” You will hear people preaching the same. Well it was not, and I am sorry if this offends you. But I am not apologising for it.
Jesus did NOT come to start a new religion. Neither did Paul.
The crowd in Jerusalem, in Acts chapter 2 were primarily Jews, but some gentiles (non-Jews) would have been there too. We know that the disciples plus Jews and others who had accepted Jesus as their Messiah were among them. The reason they were there was to fulfil the Biblical command to observe the feast of Shavuot. They were to present the firstfruits of the wheat harvest to God (Lev 22:15-17). Nowadays, it also represents the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. So they celebrate God’s provision for them physically and spiritually at Shavuot.
They received another gift from God that day – the Holy Spirit!
Jesus is called the firstfruits (1 Cor 15:23).
At Shavuot, the Book of Ruth is read, mainly because it is a story about a harvest, but it also tells the story of Ruth, a Moabite woman, joining herself to the Jews. This gives a little hint that God would join the gentiles to His people in the future, through Jesus. Ruth is one of 4 women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus, who were all gentiles. The only other woman in this list was His mother, Mary, who of course was Jewish.
Ruth said, “your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.”
Ruth joined herself to the Jews, but many Christians have at best, separated themselves from the Jews, and at worst turned against them, even hating them. The beginning of this was in the 4th century at the Council of Nicea when the church split from its Jewish roots. One of the results of this is that some years there can be a gap of a few weeks between the Jews celebrating Passover and the Christians celebrating Easter, depending on our calendars.
Another is the erroneous teaching that the Jews were unfaithful to God, therefore He broke His Covenant with them and replaced them with the church! This is called ‘Replacement Theology’ and is quite rife in the Christian church.
Don’t you see? If God broke His Covenant with the Jews He can just as easily break His Covenant with us! Are Christians perfect? Are we always faithful to Him? If we believe that God breaks His Covenants, then what are we doing going to church?
If He is not a Covenant-keeping God, then we are wasting our time!
Unfortunately, we have lost a lot by casting off our root, particularly in the area of understanding the Bible. I have often thought that as Christians we just float along the surface in Bible study. By discovering and accepting our Hebraic roots we gain such a deeper understanding of Scripture, of God, of Jesus. It brings the Bible to life.
Tom Bradford, a Bible teacher in America, has said that ‘even open-minded Bible commentary writers find themselves at the end of a promising road to new discoveries of the Bible because they are unwilling to pursue it. It could be disruptive to the inner workings of the institutional church.’ He also says that in recent years there has been an upsurge internationally in Christians turning to Hebraic Roots teaching which he attributes to the Holy Spirit. So it seems that many Christians are realising that there is so much to gain, so much to learn. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Once you start, you wonder why you did not do it sooner.
I am not in any way advocating that we all convert to Judaism. That is a backward step. The Messianic Jewish movement (Jews who have accepted Jesus as their Messiah) is growing rapidly in Israel and among Jewish communities in other countries. When people in the UK accept Jesus, they say ‘the prayer’ committing their lives to Jesus and approach the faith through Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Messianic Jews have the whole story. The Covenant with God, the ‘Law and Prophets’ (The Tanakh – our Old Testament) which tells the whole story of God’s love for His people and the promised Messiah. We are not New Testament people – we are Bible people. It is a fascinating book, and you will discover and be amazed and excited by all the new things you can learn when you look at it in its Hebraic setting. If you need help with how to access this aspect of Bible study let us know and we will be glad to guide you.
Amen

The Gospel According to...Asia Kate Dillon
Name: Asia Kate Dillon
Hometown: Ithaca, NY
Education: Actor's Workshop of Ithaca Meisner Training; AMDA, NYC
Who do you play in The Mysteries?: Lucifer
Tell us about The Mysteries: An epic, radical retelling of the entire bible in one 6 hour event, with 50 plays by 48 of the most exciting playwrights, put together by a brilliant directing/design team and performed by 54 of NYC's brightest talents. Plus there's dinner and dessert, too!
Describe The Mysteries in three words: Groundbreaking. Evocative. Transformative. What's the wildest costume you wear in The Mysteries?: It's a secret ;) If you could be anyone from The Bible, who would you be?: According to buzzfeed.com, Esther. Whom I know nothing about but Judy Garland played Esther in 'Meet Me in St. Louis' which was a seminal film in my life so I glean great meaning from this.
Which company member is most likely to actually have lived during Biblical times?: Paul Thomas Truitt
Which company member is most likely to be the Messiah?: Colin Waitt
Most likely to become an angel?: Ricardo Davila
Most likely to hear voices in their head?: Tyler Gardella
Who's the most spiritual?: Kyle Hines
On the 8th day god said_____: Nothing. Lucifer's got this one ;)
Are you going to heaven or hell?: I am already in both for they are both here on Earth. There is no joy without pain.
Which of the Seven Deadly Sins are you?: Pride What's the biggest inside joke at The Mysteries?: Weeeeeeerq!
What's your favorite moment from The Mysteries?: Pentecost, even though I'm not in it, I just love it. I'm moved to sing, clap, laugh and cry, all backstage, all in one beautiful play. What is the most rewarding part about being a member of The Mysteries?: To be an emerging artist in NYC there has been no greater reward than the camaraderie I have found with every soul involved. The level of dedication is unparalleled and creates a unique environment for not only deep artistic growth but for deep exploration of the human condition. Juicy, eh?
Why should we come see The Mysteries?: Because we want you. We want you.
For more on Asia,  visit https://www.facebook.com/asiakatedillon
...Xan Russell
Are you going to heaven or hell?: I wouldn't mind spending all of eternity cackling with Asia Kate Dillon! But I'll miss them, because obviously I'll be in Heaven.
...Anna Dart
Are you going to heaven or hell?: Heaven. But Asia Kate Dillon is such a cool Lucifer that the alternative is tempting.
...Kate Thulin
Who's the most spiritual?: Asia Kate Dillon...dust in the wind...
...Justin Ahdoot
Who's the most spiritual?: Asia Kate Dillon
Why should we come see The Mysteries?: [...] I guarantee there is a line that will make you think after you leave. There are so many lines that Lucifer says that have made my head spin.
...Sarah Keyes
Are you going to heaven or hell?: Heaven, but Lucifer makes some convincing arguments.
...Ricardo Dávila
If you could be anyone from The Bible, who would you be?: That’s tough, because now I base all my ideas of these people on The Mysteries and if that’s the case then…I’d want to be Lucifer.
...Rebeca Rad
If you could be anyone from The Bible, who would you be?: Lucifer… Asia, our Lucifer, has breathed the most beautiful light and clarity into the character that I really empathize with their plight in the full trajectory of the story.

Seeing God Provide
In Chapter 1 of Acts before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told the disciples to go into Jerusalem and wait for the gift the Father would send them. He had spoken to them about the comforter or counselor that God would send, but they did not connect the dots. They did not know what to expect, but they knew they needed to be obedient. The result of their obedience was being in the right place at…

I love snake handling, as a religious practice.
Because while they can point at some Bible verses to justify it (a couple gospels use "snakes can't hurt you" as a metaphor for strength of belief, and they took it very litteraly) it's basically a modern invention. Like, the American Christian practice of snake handling is barely over a hundred years old! That's very young for a Christian practice.
It's younger than Mormons and Christian Scientist, and it's mostly limited to my area: the Appalachians.
It's basically just a regular Pentecostal service (which often involves laying of hands for healing, and my favorite Christian tradition, glossolalia!) except they add The Snake.
Like, you're at church, and there's the pews, and people are going up and Feeling The Spirit, and some of them are Picking Up The Snake.
That's alright, it's a harmless snake, right?
NOPE! They use venomous snakes. Usually American ones (your rattlesnakes and copperheads) but sometimes they import cobras and the like.
The venomous nature is the point. They believe that if they're blessed by God, they'll be able to handle the dangerous snakes without being hurt.
And given that this is a relatively rarely practiced thing, and it's connected to faith healing, you might think it's just a con. There's some traveling "holy man" with a well-trained snake that he can "miraculously" handle without being attacked, right?
Oh god no. It's a bunch of different guys and they get bitten all the time. Wikipedia has a list of 15 of 'em who died because of it, and that's just the "notable" ones.
People are allowed to just come up and touch the venomous snake! No training or safety equipment needed, just Jesus. Reportedly people who get bitten are not considered to be lacking in faith, just "it was their time to go". Like, they don't even call the hospital about anti-venom. You just die.
(Did I mention sometimes they drink poison too? Mainly strychnine, possibly because it's survivable in small doses. Same reason: their faith will protect them)
Anyway I really do love it. It's such an unusual thing to jam into Christianity, that I can't help but be mesmerized by it.
But it makes up the majority of 20th and 21st century American deaths from snakes. Most people avoid snakes so even the most deadly venomous snakes in America usually only ever kill by surprise, like someone reaches into a gopher hole and gets bit, or they accidentally bother one trying to piss in a bush. And even then, we've got anti-venoms! Lots of people bitten make it to the hospital and get treated.
So naturally the main group that ends up dying from snakes is the ones who are constantly handling deadly snakes and then refuse medical care.

Our Foundation - Nuestra Fundacion
Praise the Lord!
Compared to other churches we have attended in our lives, with the same beliefs and same doctrine, we could feel that something was missing. We felt that there was a need for more love and compassion for anyone who had ever been rejected for their past. As Jesus said in 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” We believe God can use the most broken soul and transform them in being the brightest person. Calvary Pentecostal Church is the difference we want to see.

Andrew Murray Quote -
““Set your heart without distraction on what God has said that He will do. And then on, the Omnipotence which is prepared To bring the promise to accomplishment. The Age of the Spirit (Joel 2:18-29)
Change the inside, not the outside.
“Come, Holy Spirit,” by Mary Anne Durnin The Lord was deeply concernedabout his land    and had pity on his people. In answer to their prayers    he said,“I will give you enough grain, wine, and olive oil    to satisfy your needs. No longer will I let you    be insulted by the nations. An army attacked from the north, but I will chase it    into a scorching desert. There it will rot and stinkfrom the…
