kickstart my heart — one-shot
pairing: eddie munson x fem!reader
summary: the first time eddie sees your bare chest isn't the way he imagined it would be, and he'd imagined plenty of times.
word count: 1.6k
warnings: smut (+18), dirty thoughts, suggestive dialogue, for the purpose of this story, eddie is a boobs man (but we all know he enjoys the whole package), allusions to sex but no graphic descriptions. jeff is implied to be gay because in my heart all of cc are somewhere in the alphabet mafia.
author's note: elaborating on this. i want to remind you that this is a silly piece and i hope you take It as such <3 also i am incredibly rusty when it comes to writing, i'm sorry if this isn't great.
There were thousands of people around him, including the band on the stage in front of them, but Eddie couldn't look anywhere else but at you, eyes wide with a weird mix of emotions.
As cold sweat made his previously hot skin shiver, all he could think was "this wasn't how I thought it would go". Believe him, he'd thought about it a million times. When he needed to stay awake in class, when you wore low cut tops and tight shirts, in the blessed days you decided to opt out of a bra, late at night with his hand gripping his hard length, leaking all over his mattress. He thought about it an embarrassing amount.
In his daydreams, though, the first time he saw them was very much different. He had visions of you sprawled out on his bed, him undressing you slowing, showing your bare chest little by little until it was revealed in the low light of his bedroom, or dragging you to the ever dirty man's bathroom at The Hideout and ripping your clothes off your body in a rush to worship it.
No matter how much he thought about it, nothing prepared him for the fact that the first time he saw your tits was at a Mötley Crüe concert, in the middle of a crowd of thousands of other people.
Eddie hadn't even wanted to go in the first place — he's not very fond of metal of the glam persuasion, but you and Gareth had convinced him and the other boys to go. Jeff and Grant never passed on an opportunity to watch a good concert, and Eddie just wanted to be near you, any excuse was good enough.
He had spent the night happy, hands tucked in the pockets of his leather jacket, enjoying the feeling of the music coursing through his body, running through his veins like an adrenaline high. The bass and drums beating in sync with his heartbeat, feeling it deep within his ribcage. It felt good, like it always had. It also felt good watching you in your element, hair a mess after headbanging all night, skin glowing from sweat and the glitter in your makeup, dancing without a care in the world. The way he thinks you always should be.
It was funny at first. When the band made a pause and the members started addressing the audience, he was about to turn to you when the drummer made some particular lewd comments about the "beautiful ladies" in the crowd, expecting you to laugh with him. The whole rockstar shtick doesn't work on you, he knew that much — whenever he tried pulling something like that you'd just roll your eyes, which only spurred him on because he loved watching your beautiful eyes roll up, though he'd like to do that in other ways. What he saw instead was you whispering in Jeff's ear, the pair of you cackling at each other, too conspiratorially for Eddie's taste.
With his brows joined together in confusion, he watched you lift yourself on Jeff's shoulders, and after that everything happened in slow motion. The drummer had gone and asked to see some tits from the girls in the crowd, and as ridiculous as that sounded, a lot of girls obliged. You included, for his shock.
Gareth blushed and looked down, Grant closed his hands over his eyes, Jeff was laughing — the bastard was the only one unaffected when you lifted your top up to your head for no more than a second, but it was enough to torture him for the rest of the night. He watches you get down to stand on the ground once again, still laughing, and Eddie could tell you were a little flustered, but mostly you looked like you were having a good time.
He couldn't blame you, wouldn't blame you. He had no right to tell you what to do or not to show your body, you could do whatever you wanted. But, as the band proceeded with their setlist, and your eyes met with his, a playful look and a tentative smile on your face, Eddie couldn't reciprocate. He felt jealous, jealous of everyone who got to see you like that too, and frustrated for being able to look but probably never being able to touch the way he wants to, he felt protective over you, afraid that some other guy would feel entitled to look at you or touch you disrespectfully after that. His mind started reeling, and he could barely distinguish the music anymore.
In his brooding, his fists clenching where they still rested in his pockets, he missed the way you looked down, eyes turning sad, unsure about what your best friend's strange expression meant.
"Are you mad at me?"
Your question caught him by surprise, because you'd barely talked during the whole trip back home. The guys were rowdy as usual, sitting in the backseat of his van, talking about the highlights of their night, making fun of you for your little groupie moment, which had you brushing them off with a laugh and smile that didn't quite reach your eyes.
Eddie felt guilty. He didn't mean to make you feel like that, but he couldn't stop his mind from wandering back to that moment, and he couldn't stop the blood from flowing downwards, his pants uncomfortably tight at that point. If you noticed his erection, he was ready to throw himself out of the car in shame.
It didn't help that you were right there beside him, thighs looking delectable sitting in his passenger seat, his hand itching to take place on your knee like it always did whenever he drove you places. He could feel the faint smell of your perfume, and see the way you crossed your arms in front of your chest, not helping with his problem at all.
You had only approached him when he'd stopped the van in front of your house, after he had dropped all the others at theirs.
"What? No, I'm not…"
You interrupted when he was about to start stammering. "Because if you are, I really don't understand why, and if it's about what I did earlier, you have no right to. You're not my dad, you're not my boyfriend…"
A bitter laugh escaped him before he could help it. "I'm well aware, sweetheart."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Still frustrated, he pinches his nose between his fingers. "I'm not mad at you, I'm not judging you", he looks at you then, pointing a ringed finger in your general direction, "I'll have you know I'm a feminist, 'kay?"
You snort. "Okay, Mr. Feminist. What is it, then?"
"I just…", he sighs, "It wasn't supposed to be like that."
Maybe it was the couple of joints you all shared on the way home that had his lips loose like that. Maybe he was tired of holding it all in, his feelings spilling out of him like a dam breaking. Either way, it was out there.
"What wasn't supposed to be like that?" You asked slowly, testing the waters after feeling a shift in the conversation.
"I wasn't supposed to see you like that, I thought the first time I'd see you naked would be different."
Eddie couldn't meet your eyes. He could tell you thought it was funny, with the way you looked like you were holding back a smile. He was never bashful around you, that was the first time you saw him like that.
A lot of firsts for one night, it seemed.
"You think about seeing me naked?" You raised your brow, spurring him on.
"Yes." He says, simply. Swallowing loudly, the tension grows inside the van. "And I never planned to tell you that, but now is as good a time as ever, I guess."
You scoot a little closer, putting an arm on the back of his seat. "Can I tell you a secret too, just to make us even?"
Eddie just nods, unconsciously getting closer to you as well. You can feel the heat of each other's bodies, an electric current running between you. You draw your mouth near his ear, and whisper "I think about you too."
"Yeah?" Eddie feels his confidence slowly return, his dream coming true right before his eyes. His pretty best friend reciprocating what he thought was his most perverted secret? Couldn't be real — but it was. "We should do something about that, shouldn't we? Gotta give you something other than your imagination to work with."
He wasn't able to resist tucking a fallen piece of your hair back behind your ear. You shifted on your seat, rubbing your thighs together. Eddie took that as encouragement, drawing even closer, hand finally moving to touch the soft skin of your thigh.
"Gonna do you one better, Ed." Your voice lowered, filled with promise. "You can look, and you can touch. How does that sound?"
"Sounds like we've waited long enough."
Later that night, after you were done riding him in the backseat of his van and he'd fucked you on the floor of your bedroom as you desperately tried not to wake the other people in your house, after his hands and mouth explored your body and mapped every inch of your chest, leaving his mark all over it, you'd joked, with a soft giggle at the memory, that you would do the same thing you did that night at the next gig he'd have at local bar.
The only answer you had was an unnecessarily long drag of his cigarette as he laid beside you on the purple comforter of your bed. "If you want me to not last through the set without dragging you out of there early, go ahead."
You'd just kept laughing.

Hiiiii! Your leverage rewrite is giving me Eliot Spencer BRAINROT and I saw your requests were open, so I was wondering if you would be interested in writing something about the reader getting a bit beat up on a job, and falling asleep on Eliot while recovering? I don’t mind if it’s a oneshot, or if you want to put it in the rewrite or something. Thanks regardless, I love your writing so much!
Hi!!! Thank you so much, you can't even believe how much that means to me! I'm glad someone else is in the Eliot brainrot with me! I'm so sorry it took so long to post this, ever since you sent this I have been thinking about it and what I wanted to do with it and I finally got it on paper. Hope you like it!
Stay With Me
Eliot Spencer x Reader Words: 2.4k
As far as jobs went, this one wasn’t too bad. The ultimate goal was to steal some files for our client to prove gross misconduct. They would then go to the press or police, probably both, knowing how these types of jobs usually went. We were approaching the end game when some guards started to catch on. Parker and Hardison needed some more time and everyone else was preoccupied. So, it fell on me to be a distraction.
I quickly made my way through the building, dodging guards along the way until I made it to where Hardison and Parker were holed up, collecting files.
“What are you doing here?” Hardison asked when he saw me step into the room. “You’re supposed to be keeping the guards away from us!”
“And I’m working on it!” I replied.
Parker didn’t acknowledge me as she sorted through the physical files that she pulled from a cracked safe.
“Parker, hand me a file we don’t need,” I asked and she quickly handed one over without looking at me. I grabbed it and turned back to Hardison, “Do you have a spare flash drive that has stuff that isn't important or nothing at all?”
He looked at me with a puzzled expression before pulling one out of his bag, “What are you doing?”
I pocketed it quickly before answering, “Well the guards are coming to this room, they know something is up. What do you think they’re gonna do when they see someone walking out of the room carrying a file?”
Hardison started to nod along, “they’re gonna go after you and not bother to check the room.”
“Yup!” I called as I approached the door to leave.
“What about the flash drive?”
I faced him before stepping over the threshold, “If I get caught, give them something to find.” I winked before stepping backwards into the hall.
Just in time too. As the door latched, a group of three guards stepped around the corner. They made eye contact with me and I froze momentarily.
“Hey!” One of them yelled at me.
I quickly dashed down the hall in the opposite direction. As I turned a corner, I looked back to see that all of them were hot on my heels and passed the room without a second thought. The one who yelled at me was talking through his radio to the other guards, directing them to my approximate location to try and head me off. It worked alright. Now to test my navigation and escape abilities.
One thing I was blessed with was a pretty good memory and an interest in architecture. I liked reviewing blueprints and with the help of Parker, I was able to remember the layout of the current building. We were also able to identify interesting weak points and possible escape routes. This wasn’t the time to doubt my memory or my speed, so I just kept running.
The original guards chasing me had fallen further and further behind, but I could still hear them behind me, so I couldn’t slow down. I turned another corner to find a lone guard running towards me.
Change of plan.
He got within a couple of yards when I threw the file I had in my hand in his face. It caused him to stumble just enough for me to get a head start down a different hallway. I finally made it to a stairwell and started making my way down. I had a large enough head start that I had almost thought I had lost them as I approached the bottom. I was proven wrong when a stairwell door above me burst open and sounds of shouting echoed down the stairs. I didn’t wait to see which direction they went before I burst through a door myself into the basement of the building.
“Y/n,” Eliot said through comms, “Where are you? You still dealing with guards?”
“Yeah,” I panted, continuing to run and navigate the twisting hallways, “I’m doing okay, I’m in the basement heading to the north east corner where there should be-”
I turned yet another corner where the largest man I had ever seen stood barely three feet away. He was dressed in a guard uniform and had his arm outstretched right in front of me. I couldn’t finish my sentence to Eliot before the guard clotheslined me, landing me flat on my back and knocking the rest of my breath out of my lungs.
I groaned, trying to scramble to my feet. “Where the hell did you come from?” I gasped, trying to catch my breath and run away.
The guard didn’t say anything as he grabbed my arm in a tight grip, pulling me to my feet.
I wriggled and thrashed, trying to land a blow anywhere I could to break free, but the guard still didn’t budge. “Where do they keep you? In a cage?” I yelled exasperatedly, still not finding any opening.
The guard didn’t seem to like the insinuation and with a grunt threw me against the wall. My shoulder and hip hit first, but it didn’t completely stop the momentum of my head from hitting the wall. A jolt of pain shot through my whole body before dulling to a throbbing ache. The only thing I could seem to do was curl into a ball, hoping it would make my body feel better.
It sounded like someone was talking to me through the earpiece, but I couldn’t focus on it or decipher who was saying what. A slight whimper escaped my lips as I tried to raise my head.
The guard approached me and started to rustle through the pockets of my jacket. He stuck his hand into the pocket where the dud flash drive was and I mustered all the strength I could into my less injured arm and launched it at his face. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going for, a punch, slap, or scratch his eyes out, but I made forceful contact and I did feel my nails catch skin.
The guard stumbled back, holding his face and swore loudly, the first word I had heard him utter.
“He speaks,” I said with a pained chuckle from the floor.
That comment also wasn’t appreciated as the guard gave me a swift kick to the gut. I simply gasped, not being able to muster up a sound to voice the pain. I wasn’t even sure if I could breathe anymore. My eyes screwed shut and I rested my head against the floor, not wanting to muster the strength to hold it up anymore. I was expecting the guard to come back and start searching me again, or even some more pain, but it didn’t come.
I pried one eye open to see Eliot standing a few paces down the hall.
“Don’t touch her!” He growled, taking calculated steps towards the guard.
The guard grunted, “Make me. I’ll snap you like a twig, too.”
I saw Eliot’s lips twitch into a smile before taking a fighting stance. The fight didn’t last long once the guard made the first move. He did get a couple hits on Eliot, but not enough to slow him down and knock him out. The guard hit the ground with a large thud that I could have sworn shook the ground.
During the fight, I was able to maneuver myself into a sitting position against the wall. I started to try and use it to stand up when Eliot quickly approached me and gently helped me to my feet. He pulled my arm over his shoulder and wrapped his arm around my waist, carrying most of my weight as we walked down the hallway.
“Where are the rest of the guards? Do we have to hurry out of here?” I asked slowly, trying to keep the ache out of my voice and calculate how to get out. I couldn’t use my previous route with how injured and sluggish I was now.
“On a wild goose chase,” Eliot replied, not hesitating in his steps back toward the stairwell.
“I’m not the goose, am I?” I asked humorously, but trying to keep laughing to a minimum. I had a feeling it would hurt if I tried.
Eliot chucked though. “No, I got them out of the picture so we can get out of here.”
My mind started running in circles trying to decide what he did, but eventually I half whispered to myself, “you know what? I don’t even want to know.”
When we got to the stairs I sighed heavily, anticipating how much effort it would take to climb them.
Eliot looked at me and could see the dread in my face. “Here, sweetheart, I’ve gotcha.” He bent down and lifted my feet, putting me in a bridal carry and started up the stairs.
“You don’t have to do that Eliot, don’t tire yourself out for no reason,” I said, but rested my head on his shoulder, feeling oh so tired.
“I can carry you one flight of stairs, sweetheart, don’t worry about it.”
Another sigh escaped my lips involuntarily, “I’m so tired. I want to take a nap.”
Eliot purposefully jostled me a little bit, “Stay with me, sweetheart. Don’t fall asleep before I get you out of here and see if you have a concussion. It sounded like you hit that wall pretty hard.”
I groaned just remembering that initial pain, “Don’t remind me.”
When we reached the ground floor Eliot gently placed me back on my feet to seem a bit less conspicuous when walking through the building. This floor had a lot of offices and employees milling around. When I was distracting the guards I considered it a hazard, they could have slowed me down trying to not run into them. Now as we carefully walked through, Eliot still supporting much of my weight, the employees provided a bit of cover until we reached a side door to exit into the parking lot and the van.
Eliot loaded me into the back and sat in front of me as Nate drove off, leaving the company and its guards far behind us. Eliot took a flashlight from Hardison and shined it in my eyes.
“Your pupils look okay, responding well to light and are the same size,” he said almost distractedly as if talking to himself even though he was addressing me.
I simply blinked slowly and watched him think for a moment before he turned back towards me.
“I’m gonna ask you some questions to test your memory, okay?”
“Okay.”
“What’s your name and birthday?”
I recited it quickly in the same pattern I always did when asked.
“Good,” he praised, “now what building were we just in?”
“Jackass Incorporated,” I replied. I paused before adding on sarcastically, “Oh sorry, I meant Jackson Inc.”
I finally got Eliot to crack a smile, “Glad to hear another confirmation that your sense of humor is intact. Last thing, say the months of the year in reverse order.”
This question took a little more time as I paused every few months to think, making sure I was right. When I finally landed on January I asked, “How’d I do doc?”
His eyebrows furrowed and his nose scrunched slightly, “I’m still nervous that you got a concussion.”
I sighed, “So no nap?”
He smiled grimly, “Not yet.”
The over hour drive home was relatively quiet, but the team kept me awake by talking to me. We finally made it back to Nate’s apartment. Normally we would be celebrating afterwards, but all I wanted to do was go home, and voiced as such. Eliot left no room for argument when he said he would drive me home, still not convinced of my cognitive capabilities. Frankly, I didn’t even want to argue with him, both because it was no use, and I didn’t mind the free ride home.
He kept talking to me when driving, making sure I stayed awake. We finally pulled up to my place and Eliot insisted that he walk me in. Again, I didn’t put up a fight.
“Do you have any other injuries that we need to take care of?” he asked once the door closed behind us.
“It took you this long to ask?”
He gave me a small glare, “I figured you would have told me if anything hurt more than you could handle, but I’m just double checking.”
I smiled, showing I was kidding, “Uh huh, sure. But no, nothing feels broken, everything seems to be in working order. If anything, mostly bruises.” I patted myself down gently, finding some tender spots, particularly around my ribs where the guard kicked me. Then remembered where my head hit the wall, “Hey Eliot, would you mind checking my scalp? I don’t think I broke skin, but…”
He nodded wordlessly and pulled me towards the couch and sat me down. He sat beside me so I turned away from him so he could see the place where my head hit the wall. He gently started to comb his fingers through my hair. His fingers immediately brushed against the spot where I hit and I flinched.
“Sorry, sweetheart. I don’t feel a cut though,” he whispered to me. Even after checking the area, he continued to card my hair through his fingers.
It felt even better than I expected and a sigh escaped my lips. My head tilted back as his fingertips explored my scalp beyond the sore spot. My eyes drifted closed and that urge to sleep washed over me again.
“Can I fall asleep now?” I mumbled, mostly to myself.
Eliot sighed and stopped his movements, “Yeah, I’ve kept you up for a couple of hours now, you should be okay. I should go and let you sleep.” He started to remove his hand and shifted to stand.
I turned back around to face him and grabbed his hand, “Stay with me? I hear I’m supposed to be monitored for at least twelve hours for a possible concussion…” My eyes were fixed on our hands being clasped, but I eventually lifted my gaze to his own to find that he was transfixed on me.
His lips curled into a smile as he shifted, leaning back into the couch, “Yeah, I think I can do that sweetheart.” He gently grabbed my shoulders and pulled me down to lay on his lap. He resumed running his fingers through my hair and across my scalp.
I grabbed his unoccupied hand and held it to my chest, occasionally squeezing it in gratitude. It didn’t take long for the sounds of our consistent breathing to drift me off to sleep.

Fated to be yours | Kim Jungwoo
Cupid au
pairing: cupid!Jungwoo x reader
warnings: death, mention of bullying, bus accident, I think there's one swear word (While none of the warnings I mentioned are explicitly described, I advise you not to read this if any of them trigger you.)
word count: 6.1 k
genre: angst, fantasy, fluff
synopsis: When a tragic ending makes room for a new beginning, it only makes sense for everything to fall into place. But sometimes second chances are even harder than the first. Especially when time and fate have their own way of things.
an: I finally got done with this. It took forever and It's still far from being perfect but I thought it would only be right to give you something on my birthday. I hope you enjoy and if anyone waited for this, I'm sorry I took so long. Please let me know what you think!
This is a continuation of this [03:23 pm] timestamp. You could read this on its own, but it would make more sense if you read both.
Taglist: @gangsta-dragon, @thelilyshope, @donkey-hyuck, @doeilovr
You shift uncomfortably in your seat,
“What are you talking about?”
Voice barely audible.
Something about him makes you stay in your seat even when your senses tell you to run.
“I’m not visible to you” he says once more.
This time his tone irritates you, he isn’t even trying to make you understand.
His cold eyes also have something else in them but you can’t quite make out what that is, it seems locked away. Only visible when you search for it.
The sun makes his skin glow, so much that it almost looks see-through. Your eyes go down to his lips, they have the same shade of pink as his hair.
For a split second, you see your surroundings lose colour and everything moves in slow motion. The people sitting around you look like frozen statues, none of them even blinks. Even the vehicles outside are standing still on the road. All the noise from the busy city has completely vanished. Whilst the clouds seem to be frozen in place.
But you can still see Jungwoo, you can feel him closer to you than ever before and you hear him. You hear him so clearly even though he is not talking to you.
Before you can even process what is happening, the sudden halt of the bus takes you out of your trance. The force almost makes you fall over.
You grab onto the seat in front of you to balance yourself and you hear the voice of the bus driver shouting something out of his window. Everyone gets up to see what is going on, they start whispering to each other and you hear someone calling the emergency number.
No one else seems to have felt what you just did as if you and everyone else were in two different places.
You turn to Jungwoo, but the seat is empty.
The gush of cold air hitting the side of your face makes you look over at the door, it’s wide open but nobody else seems to notice it.
--
Jungwoo takes a deep breath to calm himself down.
Something definitely happened, something that was not supposed to happen.
Like a glitch almost, a spilt second where the universe was out of balance.
The look he had seen in your eyes tells him that you experienced it too.
How could you see him in the first place? Did he mess up somewhere?
He takes out the small piece of rolled-up parchment from his pocket, not noticing his watch that has stopped running.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation.
A twist of fate, On the destined date.
The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined,
Your journey of one, six and eight.”
No matter how much he tries to understand, none of the words make any sense to him.
But he had to be quick because time was running out, that was the one thing he was sure of.
--
Lost in your thoughts you don’t notice the message you had received from your friend asking you why you weren’t at work yet.
It’s only when you see the name of your boss displayed on your screen, indicating that he is calling you, that you realise how much time has passed.
Your eyes glide past the name to see what time it is.
09:45
You were supposed to start your shift almost an hour ago. And it doesn’t seem like you will be moving any time soon so you grab your bag and get off the bus.
Luckily you weren’t too far away from your stop so you get there relatively fast. And after explaining the situation, your boss didn’t go into it any further. Which you were very thankful for.
As the day goes by your thoughts drift off to Jungwoo, you keep thinking about his weird behaviour.
The more you think about it, the more you understand that he wasn’t interested in you. He didn’t even care to have a chat with you out of courtesy.
If only you hadn’t taken the bus that day, no if only you hadn’t gone up to him. No, you should’ve never invested your time in him or even let him into your head.
A deep sigh leaves your mouth.
No matter how much you try to forget it, a feeling of disappointment still settles in the pit of your stomach. He felt so different to you, you were almost sure he was like no other human being.
But of course, that wasn’t the case. He was far from what you thought of him. Maybe it was your own fault for making up this “perfect façade” about someone you didn’t even know.
And you were hoping to fall in love during the first snowfall of the year, “what a joke” you think to yourself.
Maybe love just wasn’t for you.
--
Snowflakes are falling softly on the ground, white and glistening, almost erasing all the troubles in the world.
Jungwoo puts his hand out to catch one, even when he knows he can’t. He looks at it while it goes straight through him. But for the first time in a while, it makes him smile.
Because a newfound hope has started to blossom in his chest.
It had been a good day; he managed to bring together two couples and even healed a broken heart. His list was getting shorter and the possibility of regaining his life seemed to come a step closer each day.
From the edge of the building, he is sitting on, he looks down the streets of the city that was once home to him. It had only been a couple of years since he left but a lot had changed.
He spots a child holding onto the hand of his father, trying to keep up with his little feet. Wrapped in a big scarf and wearing little mittens on his hands, he looked absolutely adorable. Anyone could tell how much the father adored him, by the gentle smile grazing his face whilst holding his little hand tightly.
Parental love, a love set deep in the heart but one that is very complex at the same time.
He can’t even remember a time his own parents ever looked at him like that. Because they never did, not even once. He tried so hard for them, to make them like him, to please them and to love them. Hoping he would be loved in return.
A couple walks in the opposite direction, holding hands and giggling slightly. The blush on their faces is evident even from all the way where he was sitting.
First love, the overwhelming feeling of holding someone so close to your heart for the first time, one that he recognises all too well.
Her bright eyes are still engraved in his brain, they were his favourite. Because they made his days bearable. The very last time he looked into her eyes she smiled at him. He felt happy, for once he genuinely felt happy.
He spots a group of friends enjoying the evening in a little coffee shop at the end of the road. Chatting away about their day, sharing laughs and enjoying their youth.
Friendship, a different kind of love, one that is easy to obtain and hard to let go of, one that is easier overlooked but a love destined for everyone.
The only person in the world who accepted him for who he was and who loved him because of that. He was the only person that reached out his hand to him and held it until the very end. His one and only friend, Doyoung.
At the thought of him, Jungwoo feels a sting in his chest. Something like an arrow being shot into his heart.
He takes a few deep breaths before he takes out the parchment again.
“This is the final thing you have to accomplish. If you find the right people and bring them together before your time is up, your second chance at life will be granted. You must be on time, even a minute plays a crucial role. Everything you need to know is writing on here.”
The words keep playing in his head.
One thing he did not understand is why this was delivered separately, and why this one was different to all his other cases.
The sound of the opening door takes him by surprise. He didn’t expect anyone to be here at this hour or on a day like this.
But he couldn’t care less because they wouldn’t know he was there anyway.
“A twist of fate, on the destined date.”
Something about this sentence makes him uncomfortable, it provokes worry. Because fate doesn’t have twists. It’s something that is meant to be, right?
“Oh, you’re here too...” he hears a familiar voice say.
He sees you standing by the door when he turns around and then he gets up and walks up to you.
You start walking backwards but he is faster than you and before you know it you are standing with your back against the door.
“I don’t know who you are and I don’t care who you are but if you are here to ruin things for me, spare your energy and go back to where you came from”
You scoff at his words.
“Listen here you prick, I got the memo this morning already! You don’t need to go on about that. But just because you don’t like me doesn’t mean you can treat me like this.”
“Why are you here?”
“Do I have to tell you about what I do with my life now too? Just get out of my way, I’m really not in the mood to argue”
“Can you really see me?”
“Then do you think I'm just talking to the air?" you answer, sighing heavily.
Something doesn’t add up.
You walk past him and go to sit on the other side.
Jungwoo searches for a sign but there is nothing out of the ordinary. Even though he doesn’t trust you, he somehow knows you aren’t a threat to him. Which confuses him even more.
“Could this be part of the assignment?” he thinks to himself.
All he can do now is observe the situation so he decides to sit down too.
For a while you both just sit there not saying anything, it’s strangely peaceful. Neither of you feeling anything.
“I’m sorry,” Jungwoo says.
“You are very rude, you know?”
“I know, that’s why I’m apologising”
When you turn to look at him, he is already facing you. The soft apologetic smile on his face makes your heart skip a beat.
“It’s fine...” you say trying not to give away how much he affects you.
“It’s not that I dislike you, I just thought- you were someone else”
You nod at him not really knowing what to say, hearing his words makes you feel slightly better.
As the misunderstanding is somewhat settled you slowly fall into a conversation, which goes on for hours into the night without either of you realising.
Just like the time that is ticking away.
The following days you still wait for him each morning but now he sits next to you and you spend your mornings with him before starting your day. And most evenings are spent on the rooftop, you meet practically every day but even so, there is never a dull moment between you two.
You find out that you two had lived on the same road when growing up and even crossed paths when you still were in school.
He understood your sense of humour that most people found lame. And there was always something to talk about. It just was so easy with him. Which made it even easier to fall for him.
Jungwoo felt it too, he knew something changed. It was exciting and new to him...you felt different to him.
--
He looks up to the publishing company in front of him. It was weird for him to be led to a specific place but he was sure he needed to be here for his next case. Not too long after entering, he finds the man he came for and he sees you sitting behind one of the many desks too.
A rush of anxiety goes through his body at the thought of it being you he has to set up with him. So, he turns around and begins to walk out. But he knows can’t let personal feelings get in the way, no matter how much he dislikes it.
He gets the little sachet filled with love and returns to the office. He looks at every move of the man after he has done what he needs to do. He can feel his heartbeat increasing with each passing minute.
He sees him walk over to the row where you are sitting at. His fists have become white from how hard he is clenching them. But the man walks pasts your chair and goes up to a woman a couple of desks further.
One thing leads to another and before you know it, he is down on his knee asking her to marry him. Jungwoo lets out the breath he was holding in this whole time.
He feels selfish for being so happy that it wasn’t you, but at the same time, he can’t contain it.
When you step out of the company that evening, you immediately spot your favourite smile across the street. Your heart does a little twirl when he tells you he has been waiting for you.
“Can I take you somewhere?” he asks
“Huh? Isn’t almost everything closed by now?”
“Do you trust me?”
You don’t even have to think about it, which confuses you. But at the same time, the question brings you peace as if it’s the most normal thing ever to trust him.
You look at him and smile, “I do”
He leads you all the way to the other side of the city. The further you get, the lesser the bustling of the evening gets. Almost as if you aren’t even in the same city anymore.
Jungwoo leads you into a park. A look of recognition settles on your face when memories from high school come floating back. It had been ages since you last visited this place and you almost forget about it.
After a while of walking in silence, Jungwoo turns to you with a huge grin on his face.
“Close your eyes, please”
You look at him with raised eyebrows and a playful smile but do as he asks. A couple of moments and warily steps later he tells you that you can look.
A surprised gasp leaves your mouth as you look around. Endless bushes full of pink roses covered with a layer of thin ice come into view.
“You like it?” you hear him ask
“Yes, they are so beautiful” you answer as you carefully trace the icy petals of the flowers.
You’re taking pictures when you look over at Jungwoo. He is standing surrounded by all the flowers. A soft smile is grazing his face and an unusual yet alluring energy is radiating off of him. You can’t take your eyes off of him so you decide to take a photo.
What you don’t notice is how Jungwoo is slowly fading away on your phone.
--
The pure joy on the elderly couple’s faces fills Jungwoo’s heart. Two people who had been searching for one another for more than 20 years while never giving up on their love for each other, could finally be together again. It was such an authentic form of love; one he was envious of.
Maybe if the circumstances were different, he could have experienced it too. Spending a lifetime with one person...
You enter his mind.
Your curious eyes and the way you laughed at his jokes, or how cute you looked with your huge scarf that covered most of your face. He wouldn’t mind experiencing more moments like that, he wouldn’t mind at all if it was you.
When he crosses out the elderly couple’s names, he notices he only has one more pair left. For some reason whoever, it does not make him happy.
He was a step closer to his goal each day but something felt off, it seemed too good to be true. It was almost too easy.
He puts the list away and strolls down the street, maybe he could see you again.
And not much later, as if his heart led him to you, he sees you walking down the street. He hurries to catch up but then decides to stay a couple of steps behind you.
Just as you reach the bus stop, you abruptly stop and turn around, catching him off guard. Jungwoo practically jumps in the air and you start laughing uncontrollably.
“For fuck’s sake you almost gave me a heart attack”
“That wouldn’t happen if you weren’t sneaking up on me, would it?” you ask, highly amused.
“I was not sneaking up on you. I just wanted to say hi!”
“Oh yeah of course”
“What are you doing here anyway?” you say as you pull your coat around you even tighter to keep yourself warm.
“I was just in the area, are you cold?”
“Yes, are you not? How come you are always dressed so lightly?” you ask him as you reach out to touch his cheeks.
Jungwoo takes a step backwards but you still manage to cup his cheeks. He can feel your cold hands on his face and for the first time ever someone’s touch doesn’t go through him.
He is at a loss for words, partly because he doesn’t understand and partly because it feels so foreign. It has been so long since he has physically felt anything.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” you say when you realise what you are doing.
“No, no please don’t” you hear him say before he wraps his arms around you.
“May I please hold you for a moment?”
The mood suddenly shifts into something emotional, you both can feel it but you don’t acknowledge it. You allow him to hold you, sensing he needs it.
Being in his arms felt safe, something like returning home.
After what felt like ages, Jungwoo slightly pulls back and asks you if you have warmed up a bit.
Not being able to look into his eyes, you nod while keeping your eyes on his chest.
“You look so cute” you hear him say
Now you were definitely feeling warmed up. His words made you feel butterflies all throughout your body. When you look up at him you see him looking back at you with his sweet smile.
“You look cute too,” you say to him.
He chuckles slightly and it’s the prettiest sound you’ve ever heard.
You stand there looking into each other’s eyes with hearts beating in the same rhythm.
You see Jungwoo’s eyes flicker down to your lips, and feeling a bit confident after his compliment you start to lean in.
You see Jungwoo’s smile get bigger before you close your eyes.
Before he can lean in, he suddenly hears a ticking sound. When he looks up to see where it comes from, he sees the familiar number appear above your head. All the blood disappears from his face when he realises what it means.
You were his last assignment.
He pulls away from you in shock but also disappointment. Out of everyone it had to be you.
You open your eyes when you feel him pull away and ask if everything is alright. The look on his face tells you it’s not but he doesn’t say anything.
“What’s wrong?”
“I-I think I should go,” he tells you.
It’s so clearly visible, there is only one day left.
Before you can say anything else your bus arrives and he is suddenly nowhere to be seen.
You reach for your phone to call him but you realise you never asked for his number nor that you have ever seen him use his phone.
--
With a heavy heart and trembling hands, he takes out his list but doesn’t unfold it. This can’t be right. It can’t be you out of everyone in this city. He wishes so desperately that he is wrong but he knows he isn’t. He saw the numbers above your head, just like he had seen them for every one of the people he had to bring together. Indicating how long he had to find the right person for them and complete his task. It was tricky at first but after the first few couples, he got the hang of it and it actually became something he looked forward to. Because the look on everyone’s faces after he sealed their love for each other, was priceless.
But not this time, every second that passes makes him want to stop. It doesn’t even matter if he can get his life back now because what was the purpose of it if you were not going to be there with him? But he has no choice, he has to if he does not want to disappear completely.
The paper feels rough on his fingers almost as if it’s digging into his skin, mocking him for even hoping something would work out for him. He knew he should never have let his guard down for you but it’s not like he could prevent it. Not with you.
But the harsh reality is staring back at him once he unfolds and reads your name. The golden letters shine under the city lights. Was this why everything seemed so easy? Because he would be backstabbed in the end? Was this the reason why only this mission was written in riddles? So, he could feel his heart crumbling down while he solved it? Was this all a cruel joke he had to pay for just because he wanted a second shot at life?
Jungwoo looks up at the sky with tears in his eyes as his hand crumbles the paper into a ball. But no matter how much pain he feels, the world just goes on. The buzzing of the city doesn’t die down nor do the stars stop sparkling in the night sky.
--
One more day and all of this would end.
Strolling through the streets he sees everyone setting up the last bits of decorations for valentine’s day. Everywhere he looks he sees pink and red hearts, flowers and signs. He wishes he could be here for it, to see the full effect of his hard work. The streets would be filled with people in love, falling in love and wanting to love.
You’d be too...once he completes his mission, you’d be loved by someone that you love too. You’d be happy...with someone else. You’d spend your days with that person from now on...
No matter how much he tries to prepare himself for it, he can’t accept it. How could he when he was in love with you? How could he be okay with binding you to someone else while he will disappear from your life?
The one thing that slightly calms down his wavering feelings is the fact that your partner’s name has not yet been revealed to him. While waiting does make him anxious, he feels comforted by the thought he doesn’t have to go out and find them just yet.
Then he feels it again, the same thing he felt on the bus. Everything and everyone seems to stop moving, even the snow falling down has stopped mid-air. This time whoever something happens. Golden light surrounds him and disappears into his pocket. Once reaches down he pulls out the list and the parchment, both being lit up by the light. But no matter how many times he looks and rereads them, nothing about them changes.
As he follows the beam of the light, he sees the same ticking clock that has appeared on his wrist. Four golden numbers reveal the same countdown he had seen that night with you.
The world starts moving again and everyone resumes what they were doing. Yet again, no one else seems to have experienced what he just did.
--
The bus stops right in front of him like it does every single day but none of it is the same. He hesitates to get on and almost turns back when he sees your face, smiling so brightly at him. He gives you a small smile back while getting on and walks towards you. Every step he takes feels heavier than the last one. The ticking of the clock becomes louder and louder in his ears.
“You’re finally here! I missed you this morning”, he hears you say. Making all the noise in his head disappear.
“Sorry, I missed the bus” he lies.
The way you are looking at him tells him that you don’t believe him but you don’t pry further.
“I want to ask you something”
Jungwoo turns his head to you and smiles. But you can see the sadness in his eyes. It’s so intense that it makes your heartache.
“What is it?”
There are a million things you want to ask him but can’t bring yourself to.
“Can I get your number maybe? I realised we never exchanged them and it would be easier if anything like this morning happens again...don’t you think?” you laugh awkwardly
He chuckles before responding, “I’m sorry but my phone broke a while ago”
“Oh! that’s totally fine...”
Maybe he doesn’t want my number, you think to yourself. The familiar disappointing feeling settles in your stomach. Maybe he doesn’t like me that much after all...
Jungwoo notices how your mood has dropped and it kills him to know it’s because of him. He didn’t lie to you, ever since the accident his phone had been broken...
There is something he has been contemplating ever since he found out you were his last mission. Everything will come to an end if he does it. Everything he has worked for all of this time will vanish and leave this world like it never existed.
He knows and yet he chooses you.
“Do you maybe want to go on a date tomorrow? It’s Valentine’s Day...” he asks a bit unsure.
With a bright smile, you look up at him and nod.
“I’d love that!” you tell him. The feeling in your stomach turns into a million butterflies.
--
03:00
Jungwoo pushes his sleeve back up once he sees there are only three hours left for your binding. While it’s strange your partner’s name hasn’t shown up yet, he isn’t too worried because he has dealt with similar cases.
He makes his way over to the door and grabs the handle, then hesitates. If he goes to you and the person you are meant to be with shows up, then he won’t be able to do anything but complete his mission. But if they do not show up, he’ll disappear right in front of your eyes once the timer reaches its end.
Both of the options break his heart even more.
Time passes by without him moving from his spot. Eventually, he lets go and goes back to sit down. No matter how hard he tries, he just can’t do it.
He takes out the parchment one last time.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation.
A twist of fate, On the destined date.
The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined,
Your journey of one, six and eight.”
The sun is setting already when he feels his wrist light up again.
02:00
You must be wondering where he is, he thinks. Your date was supposed to start half an hour ago...
“Your journey of 1-6-8...168 hours?” he quickly takes out his list to see when he brought together his first couple of this year.
Exactly one week ago.
“A step in the right direction after great hesitation...But that doesn’t seem right? I didn’t hesitate with any of the bindings...”
That’s when it hits him.
“I hesitated to get close to y/n!”
His wrist begins to hurt as the light seems to have become brighter.
01:30
You’re standing in front of the café you agreed to meet at. An hour has passed and you still see no sign of him. But you keep waiting with the bouquet of pink roses and the new phone you bought him, in your hands.
“He will be here”
01:00
“The appointed hour, a blessing and curse combined...The hour it’s all over! A blessing for y/n and a curse...for me?”
So many things rush through his brain and he feels the blood streaming through his veins. His heartbeat is almost as loud as the cars passing by him.
There is something he overlooked, something he completely disregarded in all of this.
00:30
“A twist of fate, On the destined date...” as soon as he reads out the remaining line, a sharp pain shoots through his arm. When he looks down, he sees the timer pulsating on his wrist.
He grabs the edge he is sitting on as tightly as he can so he doesn’t fall off. He turns himself around and lets himself fall down on the concrete beside him. His hands are trembling uncontrollably and his breathing is staggered. There it is, the answer he has been looking for this entire time. Written in the same golden letters as your name and the clock.
“Kim Jungwoo”
He was the one fated to be yours.
00:20
He gets up and sprints down as fast as he can, wishing with all that he has that you’re still waiting for him.
00:10
He arrives in front of the café but you aren’t there. He goes inside but you aren’t sitting at the many tables in the shop either.
His wrist feels like it’s on fire and his lungs could give in at any moment, but he keeps running with the winter air hitting his face.
00:05
The tears running down his eyes disappear into the void before they reach the ground. He feels himself go weaker by the minute. Even his skin looks almost invisible.
The bus stop is his last hope, it’s the only place he can think of and he so hopes he is right. The sounds around him start to quiet down and his surroundings become hazy.
But he sees you so clearly. Standing at the bus stop like the very first time he saw you.
“Y/n” he calls out with the last bit of energy he has left.
00:00
You turn around but there is no one. Only the occasional car passes by. The streets are as empty as you feel at the moment. For a slight second, you thought someone called your name, that he called your name. Maybe you just hoped for it...
--
One year later
“It’s that time of the year again everyone, love is in the air! And while this is a very happy day that we spend with a loved one, we’d like to remember the ones that no longer are with us. As they too deserve to be loved on a day like this. I’d first like to mention the devastating bus accident that happened exactly 5 years ago where a high school student named Kim Jungwoo, tragically left us after being hit by bus 32 while crossing the road. May he rest in peace and the people still mourning for him be given the strength to keep going forward. The second case we’d like to remember today...”
You wipe away the tear running down your cheek while the radio beams through the bus. You're not even paying attention to what they're saying as you look at the seat next to you that is still empty. No matter how much time passes, there doesn’t go a day by where you don’t hope that he will get on and sit next to you. Tell you he is sorry for being late and flash you that smile you love so dearly.
When you check the time on your phone, the photo you took of him is staring back at you. And a small smile appears on your face. “I’ll see you in a bit...” you whisper.
After searching for so long, you found out where he went. For a long time, you tried to forget about him but you couldn’t. So, you searched for him everywhere. You resented him but you loved him. You couldn’t just let go thus you found him eventually...
After ringing the bell you get off at the cemetery.
You make your way through the different rows of headstones while you clutch the flowers tightly to your chest.
You see a man standing at the place you were looking for. He keeps apologising for something and tears keep running down his cheeks. Eventually, you see him drop to his knees while letting out an agonizing scream.
The sound of pure heartbreak in his voice is too much for you so you start crying with him as you can’t hold yourself back.
After what seems forever you approach him and lay down the flowers in your hands.
“Are you here for Jungwoo?” he asks you with a broken voice
You slowly nod as you wipe your eyes.
“Are you a family member? Oh, I’m sorry if I’m overstepping...”
“No, I’m his best friend...”
“Doyoung?”
He looks up at you with a surprised expression on his face. “Do I know you?”
“Jungwoo told me all about you” you explain.
Doyoung looks at the headstone in front of him with a pained expression on his face.
“Did he mention how I’ve been an awful friend?”
You shake your head slightly and say, “actually he spoke very highly of you. He told me you were always there for him. And that he was glad he was able to meet a friend like you.”
The tears keep falling down his face.
“I don’t deserve to be remembered like that. Not- not after what I did to him...”
“I’m sure he thinks differently. He never once spoke badly about you. He never spoke badly about anyone, to begin with...”
“He didn’t...he loved a lot, too much sometimes.”
“So, you shouldn’t talk about yourself like this, he wouldn’t have wanted it.”
Slowly but surely, you both fall into a deep conversation about the one you held so dearly to your heart.
“Could you tell me what happened, please?” you ask unsurely
Doyoung takes a deep breath and looks down at his hands on his lap.
“He got bullied all throughout high school. There was no reason for it but they never stopped...Jungwoo never liked conflict so he would just bear all of it on his own. I tried to be there for him whenever but in senior year this new girl joined and he suddenly changed. Jungwoo caught feelings for her and that just added to everything. She was part of that group and when word got out that he liked her, the bullying became worse. There were days he would end up in the hospital but even then, it didn’t matter to him because she cared about him. But that wasn’t the case because she is the reason he isn’t here anymore.”
A fresh set of tears start to roll down his face.
“He didn’t believe she had bad intentions. I-I should have stopped it....it was valentine’s day just like today, a few days before his birthday when she asked him to come help her because she was stuck at school. I warned him not to believe her and asked him not to go...but I didn’t stop him when he insisted. He said he just wanted to check if she was safe...I don’t know what happened inside but when I went after him, he was already running out while crying...he didn’t look good; they had hurt him. Then-then...he ran across the street...I was too late...I let it happen before my eyes...”
You stroke his back in an effort to comfort him even though you barely can compose yourself.
A heavy silence, only broken with an occasional snuffle settles in.
“How did you know him?” you hear him ask after a while.
“We both took the same bus home every day so we met naturally; it was spring when I saw him for the first time. I can’t believe it’s been a year already...It feels like yesterday when I went up to him-”
Doyoung looks at you with a confused expression on his face, “What do you mean a year? Jungwoo has been gone for five years already...”
You feel as if time has stopped yet again, your hands feel clammy and your head can’t comprehend what he is telling you.
“That’s not possible...I even took this photo of him” you take out your phone again with shaky hands. But when you look down at your screen to show him, your phone falls out of your hand.
He is no longer there.

Croissant Clouds
Summary: Kyungsoo was distracted by clouds. You were distracted by his smile.
Wordcount: 977
Pairing: Kyungsoo x You/Reader
Genre: Romance, Fluff, Short
A/N: I like to consider this a happier version of Turned down happy corners. Inspired by the cute little photo Kyungsoo shared with us last Christmas. Also, I suck at writing a summary I'm sorry.
“Is it really that good?” A hint of laughter sounded from your voice as you asked your boyfriend about his sandwich. The two of you were enjoying a picnic together; a rare occasion given your busy schedules. It’s not as if you minded quiet date nights in either of your apartments. Catching up on Netflix shows, seeing movies months after their release, trying out new recipes, cuddling, and talking about annoying workmates were activities you enjoyed together very much. But once in a while outside dates were a breath of fresh air for the both of you. Staying cooped up in your apartment for months on end made you feel like a prisoner.
Kyungsoo nodded appreciatively, mouth busy enjoying his sandwich. It was a new recipe you both saw on a video yesterday and Kyungsoo being Kyungsoo, he immediately went to the grocery to buy ingredients and insisted on perfecting it to bring to your picnic date today. You knew better than to not let him have his way especially when it came to food. This date will absolutely not be ruined by him being sulky about not being able to try out a new recipe. Although, a pouty Kyungsoo would have been pretty cute and would definitely make for a memorable picnic date. “Can I have a bite then?” Without so much as a glance and any hesitation, he moved the wrapper lower so you could take a big bite. You brushed your hair to the side and leaned in to take a bite when Kyungsoo’s hand disappeared. “Wha-”
“Ah.” Mouth still agape in expectation of a sandwich, you glanced up at him to see what had caught his attention. His face was angled towards the sky with an expression of surprise. Closing your mouth and gulping at the ghost of a sandwich, you glanced up as well. “Uh, what am I looking at exactly?” Instead of responding, Kyungsoo fished his phone out from his pocket and started to take photos. His lips formed a small smile and his eyes shone with the happiness of a little boy discovering something interesting to play with.
Forgetting all about the delicious sandwich you had been promised, you opted to watch in silence as Kyungsoo’s gaze flitted from his phone to the sky and back again for a few seconds. His small smile turned the corners of his lips down which you found fascinating. Never had you met someone whose smiles would curve downward at the edges. What was even more fascinating was the slow build up as his smile grew into a wider grin. You watched as his big doe eyes turned into crescent-moon like shapes, his perfect white teeth showed, the heart shape of his lips became more prominent, and his cheeks puffed up. It was a sight you felt blessed to witness everyday.
Kyungsoo slowly lowered his head but kept his eyes glued to the screen of his phone as he went through a few photos. The smile on his face had now been turned into a slight frown and his thick eyebrows were knitted together in concentration. Your distraction had disappeared and so curiosity took over. Your boyfriend was never one to spend a long time on his phone especially when you were around so you were wondering what could have fascinated him enough to take out his phone. Suddenly, his gaze turned bright and he showed his phone off to you proudly.
“Look, a croissant cloud.” You blinked at him before looking down at his phone. In front of you was a picture of the clouds above and for a few seconds you wondered what on Earth he was talking about. A croissant cloud? What? To you, the photo on the screen of his phone was similar to the hundreds of cloudy day photos you’ve seen online.
Realizing you’ve probably stared at his phone a few seconds too long already, you were about to give up and ask him what it was he meant when you saw it. In the middle of the photo was a cloud slightly bigger than the rest but smaller than the one above it but the curved down corners of it were indeed reminiscent of a croissant shape. You howled in laughter and grabbed his phone to take a closer look. “Oh my god Soo, you’re right!” Kyungsoo laughed a little, your own laughter dragging it out of him. A common occurrence given your nature to laugh a little too loudly at times which would cause him to feel the need to laugh as well.
“Right?” He said, a cheeky grin on his face and both eyebrows raised as if to say, “Isn’t it cool?” Still feeling giggly, you let go of his phone and wrapped your arms around your knees to rest your head on them so you can return to admiring your boyfriend’s sudden outburst of little happiness. “Do you like outdoor dates now then?” Kyungsoo thought for a moment. Between the two of you, it was him that always rejected outdoor dates. Sure, he liked to taste good food but he made reservations for that and always chose quiet and secluded restaurants that he knew would never be buzzing with too much people and noise. On your end, you knew Kyungsoo found it easier to appreciate his surroundings when there wasn’t a lot to distract his senses so you never complained. Plus, who could reject good food with a handsome date.
He let go of his phone and leaned back, placing his arms behind him and looking up at the clouds again. His eyes shone with a contented look not much different from your own right now. “If we could have this view everyday, I wouldn’t mind coming out of my cave once in a while.”
You silently threatened the clouds to form croissant shapes everyday.

Season Two Episode Four
A 1918 timestamp ushers us into one of Downton’s more slow moving episodes where three parts painful banality has been mixed with one part life-or-death peril.
Providing more interesting political and cultural conflict than WW1 (at least at Downton) is Isobel’s ongoing grating at Cora’s very soul. Cora has had the temerity to ensure that the staff don’t collapse on their feet and has done something with the linen that I can’t quite fathom which, of course, Isobel takes as a slight upon her medical knowledge. Isobel makes the fatal error of calling Cora’s bluff threatening to ‘seek some other place’ if she is not appreciated at Downton. Major Clarkson also takes sides with Cora and Isobel now has no choice but to throw herself and her messiah complex upon the Red Cross in Northern France. I am sure they will be thrilled.
With Isobel’s departure, Moseley and Mrs Bird find themselves at a loss having deep cleaned the house and moaned about their employer’s eating habits. Turns out that one thing they forgot to do was deploy any semblance of a security system as a random man with a drama school limp wanders into the house looking for food. In a manner that would make the current Conservative front bench recoil with horror, Mrs Bird starts up a soup kitchen out of her own (presumably rather small) pocket. In her latest attempt to not do her job, Mrs Patmore drags Daisy out for some fresh air and in the process uncovers this particular bit of well meaning but financially unsustainable charity. Mrs Patmore scales up the operation, creating a “special storage area” to squirrel away surplus from the army’s stock, which O’Brien conveniently overhears (but to be honest, it’s not that much of a coincidence. I imagine most of the kitchen heard it considering that Mrs Patmore practically yelled it). In an effort to try and inject a bit of actual drama into this episode, O’Brien reports this to Mrs Hughes but (un)fortunately, Mrs Hughes could not care less. But after watching the world’s most appalling secret handover of goods in the village, O’Brien rallies and this time is successful in bringing Cora to the nefariously compassionate Bird-Patmore coalition. To absolutely everyone’s surprise (viewers included) Cora orders food to be taken from the house stock rather than army and with all the over-confidence of a consultant sets about re-arranging tables and streamlining the workflow.
Feeling much less charitable than Mrs Bird, Moseley heads to the Abbey and attempts to make himself indispensable and reach the dizzying heights of ‘Valet to the Earl of Grantham’. But not long after the peels of laughter that such a notion invites have died down, Bates returns and takes Mr Molesley’s shoehorn which one can’t help but think is emblematic of something. The return of Mr Bates is, naturally, a painfully protracted process that involves key protagonists not talking to each other, Thomas smoking on a wall, and the obligatory invocation of Kamal Pamuk. Robert invites Bates back to help him through the ‘veil of shadow’ and as such I was intrigued to learn that he is a World of Warcraft devotee. Bates reappearance downstairs also allows for the return of two other key Downton Abbey tropes: Anna and (John)Bates having a heart to heart under the cover of darkness, and Thomas and O’Brien’s irrational loathing/scapegoating of Britain’s most infuriatingly lovelorn character (outside of Thomas Thorne) to resume with aplomb.
Less happy to be within the confines of the Abbey is Edith who continues to signal that all of this is really a bit beneath her (certain elements quite literally). Ever the teacher’s pet, Mr Molesley reports the sighting of an Officer by the maid’s staircase to Mrs Hughes who hears that there have been lots of rumours on the timeline tonight and comes out to say that she does not live in a sack. Unfortunately, Major Bryant does not live in one but definitely frequents one and, as such, it is of course Ethel is dismissed. As she rapidly packs all her belongings, Anna pleas to Mrs Hughes on her behalf confirming that she is indeed the friend we all want but probably don’t deserve. But Mrs Hughes can’t get rid of her that easily as Edith (and passenger) skulk back to liven up the end of the episode with news of an oncoming baby *Eastenders drums intensify*.
Talking of undeserving relationships, Sybil and Branson receive more air-time than usual, providing the latter the opportunity to demonstrate that at times he really can be a muppet. And a slightly malevolent one at that. Sybil is firmly under the cosh this week with Violet making thinly veiled references to inappropriate alliances and Mary asking probing questions whilst she tries to get on with her job. Mary thinks that she has spotted her sister and Branson having some kind of romantic exchange but in reality, all that she has seen from afar is Branson telling Sybil that she is in love with him which when you think about it, is all kinds of awful and hardly the basis for a healthy relationship. After a long walk through the grounds where I am half expecting Branson to appear on a horse Willoughby-style, Sybil eventually caves and confesses to Mary that she doesn’t know if she likes Branson despite his eminently creepy voice over. Sybil then relays her sororal confidence and rather than taking this as an opportunity to ingratiate himself, Branson for whatever reason attempts to coerce Sybil into a relationship but not before he belittles her job. Sybil looks rightfully outraged as some equally emotionally manipulative strings wail in the background in an attempt to try and make us think that anything that has just happened was evenly slightly dreamy.
Threaded through this glacially paced episode has been the looming threat of a both a concert and the death of Matthew and (to a much lesser extent because that is how class works) William. In an effort to break the monotony of walking around the exact same bit of French trench (see previous re-caps for further details), William and Matthew take to wandering across some largely unadulterated land and into the path of some nonchalant Germans. Daisy’s lack of (presumably fawning) letters from William starts off a chain of enquiry which confirms that the War Office has declared Matthew and William missing enabling Mary to once again deploy her signature move: weeping into her gloves. But only one hand this time because she needs to keep a bit of composure for the show must go on! Apparently. Following some abysmal piano playing (I grew up in an appallingly musical household and we all had to endure the torture of other people at the early stages of learning an instrument. It was of course blissful when we got good but, heck, I was thrown straight back to the horror of it all with that ‘accompaniment’ and had an odd sort of stress response which I won’t describe here), Mary and Edith do a rendition of If You Were the Only Girl (In the World) as everyone looks on stony-faced before participating in the millenia’s most morose sing-a-long. With a very good sense of drama, Matthew and (to a much lesser extent) William make their return. Matthew takes his place at Mary’s side and joins in the signing to what is now presumably quite a bewildered audience. Ah, Downton.
Romantic declaration of the moment
Violet raises reasonable concerns about Richard Carlisle but Mary is more interested in expanding her real estate portfolio and agrees to throw her lot in with a fiscal agreement disguised as a marriage. Upon his ‘miraculous’ return, Matthew gives the union his blessing on the condition that Richard remains deserving. Not that he ever really was. But the sentiment is what matters here and what is more loving* than putting another’s presumed happiness before your own.
*there are actually a lot of other more loving things but in the interest of formatting, we’re going to sweep those under a very large rug for now.
Expressive eyebrow of the week
Rather than training as a nurse or being actually pretty useful in a convalescent home, Mary’s contribution to the war effort is being amicable with Edith. Violet declares that she has now “seen everything” as the spirit of Mrs Adelman moves on.
Wait, what?
“I wish we had a man” Presented without comment
“If I am not appreciated here, I will seek some other place” Yes. PLEASE.
“What must he do to persuade you he is in love with Lavinia? Open his chest and carve her name on his heart” No, Mary. Matthew merely needs to carve her name with a compass on his forehead to prove that…
youtube
“I hate the word ‘missing’. It leaves so much room for optimism.” Robert is a bit emotionally weird isn’t he?
“We haven't kissed or anything. I don't think we've shaken hands. I'm not even sure if I like him like that. He says I do, but I'm still not sure.” And lo, another red flag is raised. But because Branson is Downton’s version of a Bolshevik, both Mary and Sybil view this not as a warning about the boy’s behaviour but rather a symbol of his political leanings and such signals are duly ignored.
“He always seems a romantic figure to me” Daisy Robinson writes fanfic. Pass it on.
“Sometimes in war, one can make friendships that aren't quite…appropriate. And can be awkward, you know, later on. I mean, we've all done it.” Once again, Violet, tell us more!
Bates says that he has returned to “Downton at war” which sounds like a lucrative exhibition name if I ever did hear one.
Despite Mary’s most valiant efforts, no musical performance had ever gone out to such an impassive audience until Rosalind came along
youtube
Matthew of course is used to a much better quality sing-, sorry, song-a-long

Harper Alexander x Fem!Reader || Oneshot, [Part 2]
Title: The Fake Love Of My Life [PART 2]
Notes:
I'm just realising Harper and Y/N's relationship is very like Dimitri and Anastasia haha XD
Plot: Fake fiancés, impending murder victims who are actually quite lovely, dancing, jealousy, and engagement rings- oh my!
Warnings: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh? Jealousy?
"Wait... you two? Are together???"
The words coming out of an 'honoured guest's mouth, aimed at Harper and I as he comes on into the bar, pressing a kiss to my temple on his way past. The guests, especially the one that rode in with that blonde Harper made off with earlier, do not miss it despite its subtlety - given more for the towns folk around us then anything else, obviously, - . And suddenly the fact that Harper just went off flirting with another woman, hits us both in the face.
Well... fuck- and the rest of the town catches it, too; Freaking out also, on the inside. I glance up unsurely at Harper who is still standing close to my seat, but force a tinkering smile that just makes me look perplexed, and that doesn't meet my eyes.
Which, you know, works. Because if we were a real couple, and I didn't, in fact, know perfectly well that he had to seduce these girls then I would look like this; Oblivious. And that's exactly what the guests think is happening.
Trying not to show my nervousness at the situation, a shield that I've mastered at this point, I decide to play the clueless-type. Thoughtlessly blinking and smiling, I tilt my head at the guy. "Yeah," I hold up the back my left hand, and show off the engagement ring (Which so happens to be Harper's actual mothers ring, so I take very good care of it even if it doesn't totally feel like mine, nor will it ever- seeing at the engagement in the first place is a total hoax) and beam. "We're engaged, actually!"
"Uhhh... " The guy's eyes flicker nervously from me, to Harper where his glance becomes hard. You can tell that he's struggling not to tell me out right what my 'fiancé' has been up to, and is gouging what kind of reaction Harper might give if he does do that right now. Still looking blissfully oblivious, I look between the two with wide, confused eyes. "Dude."
Knitting my brows together, I play my part well. A hand on Harpers arm and a teetering tone to my voice completes the act. "Harper?"
"Ah. Y/N!... " He picks up my hand off his arm, and holds it in his own, playing his own part with a side of guilt sitting beside a big serving of regretful douchebag. He doesn't meet my eyes completely, just flickers over them, leaning his shoulder slightly between me and the guy. "Its nothin', don't worry about it. Okay?"
"Hey, its not nothing!" The guy actually shoves Harper out of his way, and my own blow open wide at it as Harper flashes a dark glare his way, silently. "Girl- " I blink up at this man, who's pointing directly at me after that show of violence and I hand him all my attention. Because oh- wow- direct! Okay, yes? I mean I know he's going to be dead in a couple of hours and he's the enemy but wow. He points behind him with a thumb, at Harper. "This guy's been cheating on you. I saw him go off with my girl friend, Jess- and I know her. The way she was lookin' at him... oof," He shakes his head. "They fucked, or something, man. I'm sorry."
Miss Peaches and Boone flash eachother a smirky, secret glance at that while most people are looking at me for a response or glaring at Harper like some of the guests are, Buckman's watching this whole scene like a show at the theatre and he's on the edge of his seat, Hucklebilly is silently urging me with his eyes to do something already. Like hurry. Hurry up. Hurry! Hurry!!
Dragging my gaze away from Huck's, I make myself slowly look from the guy that 'told me'... to Harper. Before a new expression can take hold on my face, I ask, in a deadly tone; "... what?"
Harper immediately comes forward again, looking desperate and pissed off- though its not me, he's angry at. "I don't know what he's talking about, Y/N, I swear- "
I get up from my seat and he steps - stumbles? - back at the terrible glare on my face. As terrible as I can muster, when I want to laugh at his reactions. You know? Sometimes this pretending thing can be a lot of fun. Taking a deep breath, I take off the ring he gave me, and under the gaze of the man that told me Harper was 'cheating'- I hand it back to him. Then I clear my throat, as he looks from it... to me. And does 'heartbroken' so well. "... Um- whether you did, or not. I- I cant wear this... u-until, I know. You know? Um... sorry."
Then I manage to slip past him and out the bar door, into the empty square before a smile fights onto my face and giggles topple out of me. I collapse against the side of the building, letting the laughter come out as I cover my face. Oh god... the looks on Harper's face! Oh, he was good.
He must have run out after me a moment later - after the appropriate amount of staring heartbrokenly at my empty seat, I'm sure, - because then he's poking around the corner, finding me, and enfolding his hands into his pockets as he saddles lazily up to me.
But he does not fool me- he's pretty damn amused too, I see, as when I glance around my fingers; Theirs a grin on his handsome face.
Sighing, I calm down and press my head back into the wood. "That was good! You did well!- Coulda cried, though. I mean, you were being left by me, after all."
Rolling his eyes, making me giggle again, Harper sets his jaw. "You sure think a lotta yourself, don't ya?" His slow drawl is back to normal, no longer desperate like he was acting before. Perfectly, annoyingly shirty. He leans in towards me, giving me a raised eyebrow-look. "I didn't see you cryin', neither, Y/N. Not even one, stray, tear."
"Hm. Not even I am that good an actress, Harper."
He smirks back at me, and for a moment , before returning to his straight standing position, and sighing. He looks back at the building, his mouth twisted into a displeased, put-out frown. "Well, I guess we're fightin', now... Should we be yellin'?"
Scrunching up my nose, suddenly tasting something gross in my mouth, I scowl at him. "Do we want to be the kinda couple that screams and yells?"
"Well, it is just an act."
"Yeah, but still."
"Hmmm... " Harper, looking dissatisfied with my objections, looks away again and thinks. "Okay. How about we just say we fought, then? You can jog in place for a minute and look like you just ran a marathon or something when we get back in."
Gaze flickering up to him, my eyes narrow. "Oh I am only running, if you let me squeeze your cheeks to make it look like you got red-faced."
He does not look like he likes that idea, at all. "... Okay. What if I didn't find you, then? 'N instead I walked around looking for you for a while. You can go back in now and I'll wait out here for a while before comin' back in."
"Yeah, lets do that." I push off the wall and ready myself to go back in their, looking all down, when Harper pulls something out of his pocket and tries to give it back to me. As soon as I realise that its the ring though, I shake my head good naturedly and push his hand back. "You hold onto it, until this is all over. I don't want it falling out of my pocket." It was his mothers, so its important, and if anything in this relationship is real its our shared devotion to keeping that ring safe. I would die if I lost it.
Harper stalls for a moment, displeased by my response if I didn't know better, before shoving it and his fist back into the pocket of his trousers. "Alright then... Until this is all over."
"Right." I assure him, awkwardly. Before patting his shoulder and passing him by. "See you back in there!"
"Yep."
~
Its nearly 45 minutes before Harper comes back into the bar, a sullen look on his face still, like normal. I look away almost immediately, pointedly- returning to the conversation I'm having with Miss Peaches. "... As I was saying, yeah we are having nice weather toda- "
The guy from earlier - the one that had informed me of Harper's 'infidelity'. I think his name was Matt? - suddenly pushes out of his seat a few tables over, seeing Harper come in also and saddles right beside my chair. I cut off again, and look up to him. Hello? Mister?
Not looking at me, rather glowering Harper's way, Matt offers his hand to me. Shoving it right in front of my face. I blink, surprised at its presence and the gesture. "Miss? Would you like to dance?"
"Uh- " What? I look from him, with wide, surprised eyes to Miss Peaches who just looks pretty darn amused at it - in other words, entirely unhelpful, - , as I feel quite put on the spot and unsure. What is he doing?? The whole room seems to still once again, noticing the scene that Matt is creating, and I glance Harper's way.
His sullen look has just begun to look hazardous to anyone standing near to him and I fight not wince under its power, myself.
Matt breaks his gaze from its locked position with Harper's, and looks down to me; His gaze softens, a bit, and I understand that he's only trying to make me feel better. And if this whole thing wasn't fraudulent in the first place I would probably be grateful. So letting out a careful breath, letting go of my nerves and surprise at being put in a position like this, I place my hand in his and let him guide me up to my feet.
Oh god- now I just really want everyone to stop looking, at us. At me. Stop, stop, stop-
A booming clap sounds throughout the room, and just like that everyone's attention is stolen clean away by our enigmatic mayor, who's stood up and grinning. "What a good idea! Go on everyone, lets have ourselves a good old-fashioned hoedown. Grab a partner and get to the dance floor!"
As everyone immediately starts liking that idea and getting up from their seats, and music starts play from the little wooden stage in the corner, I let myself relax. Thank god. Bless that man. Long live the mayor.
"Hey, so, are you okay?" I'm broken from my relieved thoughts, as Matt walks me to the middle of the dance floor and guides me in front of him- setting one hand on my waist while the other holds my hand. His words are sweet and low, so no one else really hears, and damn- I'm going to sure be mournful when he dies. Even if he is a yank.
Offering him a small, strong smile as we begin to dance to the reasonably paced guitar music, I set the hand of mine that isn't holding his securely up onto his shoulder. He's just wearing a sleeveless under shirt, so I feel a bit of the skin of his shoulder which is odd but I've long since given up holding new-comers to any of the same expectations we have. "I'm holding up, thank you. I just never thought he would do something like that... its so not Harper... "
Speaking of Harper, I glance around the room slowly to see where he is now, and catch his glare from the side of the room with Miss Peaches. Evidently she's asking him if he wants to dance with her while I'm busy, but he seems unresponsive. Too busy playing jealous.
I quickly look away. Matt shrugs. "Yeah well, you can never really tell with douchebags. Sometimes they're real nice guys, until they aren't."
"Yeah... I guess so... "
"Anyway," Matt suddenly lets go of my waist, carries my hand up to above our heads, and spins me. A cant help the delighted giggle that tumbles out of me at the move, my skirts flying around me before he pulls me back to his body. He flashes me a grin back, and as the music's tempo speeds up, so do we- the dance becoming faster, and more fun. "Lets see if I can distract you from that bullshit for a little while."
Smirking back to him, I feel like forgetting about who I'm supposed to be, now - engaged and heartbroken, - in order to just have some fun. Because damn, it has been a long time. Yes at parties I dance with men - Lester, Hucklebilly, Buckman. Even Granny, though she isn't a man, - but that's not really the same. That's like dancing with my brothers, or my father - or mother, - . Theirs nothing quite like dancing with a man you don't know, not because you want him to court you or because he wants to court you, but just for fun.
"Lets see if you can."
~
A couple of hours later I finally sit back down again, a beam on my face and my cheeks warm - aching for a glass of water or twelve, - as Matt excuses himself to go to the bathroom- but promises that he'll be back. "Take your time, I'll be here!"
He smiles, patting my shoulder comfortingly, before turning and heading off out of the building.
Its a few moments later, after I've acquired a drink of water and am sipping at it at the bar, that Harper slips into the seat next to me. I turn and- immediately, catch myself. I was about to smile, and ask him how his night is going.
But I remembered just in time that I am supposed to be mad at him, and take a deep breath; Looking away again.
Without saying a thing to me, he orders himself a shot of whiskey- a heavily grumpy look on his face. I glance at him, wondering what's going on in his head and if he's had any fun at all tonight or if he's been preoccupied acting like a jealous bastard the whole time. I worry that its turned his actual mood sour.
I hope not.
"So... " He finally speaks, still not looking at me. "You been havin' a good time, with that yank?"
"Um... " Glancing around us, I see a group of the yankee girls nearby within hearing distance, and look nervously at Harper. Because for whatever reason, I get the inkling that he isn't acting anymore, and I don't want him thinking that anything that comes out of my mouth, is true. "That's... not, really, any of your business- is it?"
Finally he looks at me, and theirs a pissed off gleam in his brown eyes as he looks down on me. "Oh yes it is. You're my fiancé, ain't ya?"
My jaw nearly damn well drops. Has he been drinking before now?? I didn't see him dancing at all throughout the night. What's wrong with him? Theirs definitely something odd about what he's saying; How he's looking.
Not even Harper is this good of an actor.
"Harper... " Lowering my voice and leaning closer, I tug gently at the side of his clean white shirt. "Are you alright? Do you want to leave and talk?- "
"What's happenin' here, huh?" Oh for fucks sake- I turn to see Matt suddenly back, on my other side and standing over both Harper and I- but turning his stony, protective, angry look on my 'fiancé', obviously. I mean, I appreciate the efforts but you really have the worst timing, Mathew-
Harper doesn't back down even an inch from the more imposing figure that is my dancing partner for the evening. In fact he just pulls up his whiskey to his lips, letting his hand dangle lazily before him as he raises his brows at Matt. "I'm talkin' to my lady, a'course. What are you doin'?"
"Oh, your lady?" Matt scoffs, and I feel like red lights should be flashing and alarms should be blaring. Their tones are dangerous. "First of all, this is the twenty first century man so she has a name. Second of all- did you mean Y/N or the girl two seats down from you?"
Oh, hell. My eyes widen as that particular dig leaves Matts lips and, knowing Harper's already prickly personality, turn slowly to him. A flickering of a tiny - dangerous, - smile flashes across his lips as he nods and looks away, before taking the whole contents of his glass in one go. Then he turns to me - to me! - , an only marginally softer look in his eyes. "Y/N, lets go."
"Uh- " I cut myself off, unsure of how to respond. He continues to look at me, waiting impatiently for my response, and Matt looks swiftly down at me before picking up for, me.
"Y/N's not going anywhere with you if she doesn't want to, man. So back off."
"My apologies, was I talking to you?" Harper turns his gaze up to Matt again, and my eyes tear around the room for some help, but for the first time today no one, is stopping to witness the drama.
Hell, violence could be ensuing, and no one here cares?? Seriously?! How drunk is everyone?!
"No, but someone has to be good to Y/N."
Harper doesn't flinch but you can tell that he wanted to, as one of his eyes slowly squints, and the frown lines in his face deepen. "... do you wanna take this outside?"
Immediately I whip around to face him fully. A hand slamming down on the table between us and I am deeply concerned. "Harper do you even see the size of this man!?"
"Love to, but I don't feel the need to remedy all my problems with violence, mate." Matt smirks, crossing his arms. And first of all, thank god, but also- the look on Harper's face at hearing that is horrifying. How could this man have made things worse, by not punching Harper in the face?! Now I kind of wish they had gone outside.
"Okay!" Before Harper can respond, or take out the sharp throwing object I know he has in his pocket, I get up out of my seat and back off from them both. "You both need to stop this, before it becomes a dick measuring contest. First of all, Matt, I had a really lovely night so thank you, but I'm leaving now, so goodbye. Harper- " The moment I turn to him, I stall, and calm down. And I mean it, when I say; "I'll talk to you, later."
Then I turn around and head for the door so that I can walk out into the night and go home- when I suddenly hear a horrible hitting noise and a crash, followed by gasps and Buckman yelling 'HELL'- and whip right back around. My eyes blow open wide the moment that I see Matt, fallen into a chair behind him holding his jaw, and Harper shaking out his fist, still managing to look tough even as his fist must be killing him, looking down on Matt. I gape, about to say something - or yell something, - but Harper suddenly turns to me, and grabs my hand on his way storming through the horrified crowd and out of the building. I just try to keep up so he doesn't tear my arm off.
Once we're down the road a bit, I manage to rip my arm back away from him, and get glare in response. I tough it out, though, and scowl back at him. "Harper what the hell?? I mean I know we're kind of invested in our scheme but you're acting weird, now. And- you- you hit him! Why would you do that??? What is wrong with you??"
"'It's what my 'character', woulda done," He almost growls, through grit teeth.
"You really don't have to go that far, Harp!" He really, really, doesn't!
Rolling his eyes up into his skull, I watch as he finally takes in a deep breath- hands on his hips, bracing himself. After a moment of silence, and I'm thinking he's calming down now thankfully, his gaze flashes to me and I see clearly that he's still burning.
Reaching over to me, he once again takes my hand in his and drags me off. Not quite so angrily this time, so I don't fear that my arm will be removed from my shoulder at all at least, but I'm still totally lost. Where are we going, now??
We don't go far, as it turns out, and he quickly presses me against a wall between two houses close by to where we were, and in the darkness I can just make out a clearer look entering his eyes, finally. Like his sight is finally, - finally, finally! - not so clouded by fury anymore, as he breathes in fresh night time air. Silently, I watch, waiting for him to speak first.
Is he okay??
Taking his hands off of me, he runs a hand back through his hair, and finally lets his shoulders relax. "... Okay. Okay. I'm fine, now. Sorry for makin' you uncomfortable."
"Are... are you sure you're alright? Do you want to talk about what just happened??" Because I definitely think we should-
"My character just got away from me, that's all. I got too into it... I apologise." Yeah, he says that, but he still isn't looking me in the eye. Everywhere but my eye, actually. And an idea occurs to me that makes my heart start to beat louder, in my ears. Carefully, I reach up, and lay one hand on his shoulder while the other curls up into his hair.
I literally feel his body relax more, under my touch. A sigh escapes him, that I'm sure he would've preferred me not hear. So he looks stony, again.
Letting go of my bottom lip, as I had nervously been chewing it, my gaze flickers up to his face. "Um, would it help, if... my character, were to, 'forgive', you?" Still against his better judgement I'm sure, Harper perks up, at my suggestion. I set him with a focused, serious look. "Because she does. She knows that you have to touch other girls and its not because you want to, and in fact it has nothing to do with her. Me."
"... yeah?"
I nod. "Yes." Giving him a smile, I start to take my hand away from him and step away. "So don't fret! We're okay. Still engaged, and in 'love'- "
Suddenly, before I can get away completely, Harper grabs my hand again and tugs me back- and further, to his lips, where he presses a passionate kiss. A moan is torn out of me immediately and my eyes quickly fall shut, reciprocating before I can think better of it.
This happens a lot, now; The kissing. It helps us get into character, I suppose. Makes us feel like two people who are actually in love, rather then Y/N and Harper who just pretend to be. And it feels really, really good.
He pulls back not even an inches worth of space for a moment, solely for air, and my eyes crack open a tiny bit; Enough to see him gulping down air so he can come back. "Harper... "
He presses right back quickly, guiding me forward back into the wall behind me. Wood digs into my spine but I cant bring myself to care, too wrapped up in the body of the man kissing the hell out of me and my endeavour to taste him back, and maybe gouge a moan or two from him. Because I want to hear it. I don't know why, but I need to. I feel like all I ever see from him is spite and crankiness and I need to know he has more, for me. Especially, for me.
Tugging gently on some of his hair seems to win me what I wanted, as I swallow the vibrations of his groans. Then I slowly pull back, my heels finding the ground again and opening my eyes delicately, and look up at him as he sighs; Understanding that its over as he still leans over me.
Tilting my head, breathing slowly in order to return to former breathing patterns, I catch his gaze. "... Feeling better?" My voice is low, talking carefully as I look up at him from beneath my eyelids.
"... almost."
"Hm?" What else can I do? I'm just wondering what else it could possibly be that he, or his character, wants from me when to my surprise Harper slips down to one knee before me. My eyes widen slightly, looking down at him and wondering what he is doing. "Harp? Your knee hurt?"
He takes my hand in his and, not looking me in the eye as my heart starts to beat unbelievably louder- the sound reverberating hot in my ears. "I just figured, that, our engagement is missin' something."
Oh... Harper takes his mothers ring back out of his pocket, and slips it back onto my fourth finger; Where it now lives. "Y/N L/N, we've known eachother a long time now, basically our whole lives... unfortunately, I think I've only just cracked the surface of what their is to know when it comes to you... and I'd sure like to spend the rest of my life trying to learn the rest."
"Aw... Now, I kinda regret that we didn't do this in front of people. You did that really, well. And telling me my last name! Nice touch." I tell him, because its true, but adding a little joke because I have to as I slip my hand out of his grasp and examine the ring back in its place. My ring.
It really is pretty.
"I ain't done." My eyes snap back to Harper's and my cheeks heat up even more then they had been already, and close my mouth quick.
"Oh."
Flashing a little smile that looks so good on him, he tilts his head. I nearly forget that this is fake. "Will you marry me?"
Breath hitching, because that is the softest, least disapproving-of-me thing he has ever said and it makes my stomach drop- In a good way. But I hope that he does not see how mushy he's made me- because that might complicate things.
He might think I'm falling for him... And I'm not...
I try to keep it out of my voice as I respond, even as a gentle smile warms onto my face. "Yes, Harper Alexander... I will marry you. Now get back up here."
He smirks and gets up, and I lean up to press a quality kiss to his lips, in thank you. When I pull back, he picks up my left hand in his and I catch a serious and forlorn look cross his face as he looks at the ring. His voice is quiet but firm when he speaks. "... I don't want you ever taking this ring off, again. I didn't care for that, at all."
"Well it was just for show... "
His jaw clenches. "I know."
"Hey- " I grab his arm, pulling him gently but abruptly from whatever angry place he was disappearing back into, and flash him a comforting grin. "How about we don't go back to the bar. We can just go back to my house, and avoid the headache. Alright?"
"I'd like that." He grins, a lovely grin that we very rarely see on on him anymore unless he's faking it, a hand hovering over the small of my back as we turn and start heading off to my house.

When Will You Realize (UNEDITED)
A/N: @you-said-yes is a bloody freaking genius and came up with this idea for the multiverse twins, and I'm in love. So, I'm gonna write this (Peter-centric, of course) and attempt to do it justice! I just hope I don't goof this masterpiece up too much.
Genre: Angst
Warnings: cursing (duh, it's me), family drama, Charles + Logan + Hank ignore Wanda and Pietro because they need Peter, very brief mentioning of a needle, sad Peter + Wanda + Pietro, Pietro having the nickname "Piet" (pronounced as the first bit of his name, not diet with a "p"), no beta readers or edits (sorry)
Word Count: 3.3k (3,380)
"Peter! The cops are here! ... again."
When Wanda had yelled that down to him, Peter only found himself sighing. What store manager is accusing him of shoplifting this time? Did that punk-ass kid behind the counter at 7/11 rat him out again?
But Peter didn't do anything about it.
Nope.
Well... actually... maybe a quick pick-pocket wouldn't hurt, right? Just see who the hell these cops are, maybe spook them when he says their names. Unless he already knows them, then that'd be weird.
Peter let go of the paddle he was using, calmly walking upstairs as time just slowed around him, nearly to a halt. He was greeted with three new faces, all three of the men. None of them looked like cops.
He went into the pocket of the man with hella sideburns, opening up his wallet, only to see a folded-up piece of paper instead of a badge.
After looking over the paper for a moment, Peter found himself grinning. This was a rental agreement for a car. These guys were from out of town.
Peter folded the paper, replacing it into the man's wallet before slipping it back into his pocket. And with new confidence, he went back to his basement and continued to play his solo game of ping-pong as he waited for the men to come down.
He heard one of the stairs creak, a sure sign that it wasn't one of his siblings. A very particular spot on one of the stairs made the most obnoxious creaking noise, and it was the only way he was able to identify anyone new.
"What do you guys want?"
Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Peter just kept going from one end of the table to another, waiting for his brother to come down so the two could go even faster.
"I didn't do anything!"
Of course, that was what he was waiting for before the cops showed up. But now, he was just waiting for them to all get down here. He was just showing off at this point.
Peter dropped his paddle once again, slowly stretching across his couch. Well, slow for him. To the three men, it probably looked like it happened in the blink of an eye.
"I've been here all day."
A shit-eating grin spread across his face as the three men turned to him, one staring at him as though he were an animal at the zoo. The other two seemed exasperated.
"Just... relax, Peter. We're not cops--"
"'Course you're not cops, if you were cops, you wouldn't be driving a rental car." Peter interrupted.
"You're not cops?"
Peter didn't even hear Pietro come down the stairs.
"How'd you know we got a rental car?" the man with long hair and sunglasses asked.
"I checked your registration while you were walking through the door." Peter shrugged.
"Peter!"
Wanda must've recently come down as well, as she lightly smacked Peter's shoulder, like a scolding mother rather than an older sister.
"I also had some time to kill, so I went through your rental agreements and saw you're from out of town." Peter's shit-eating grin just spread across his face, before it dropped into a look of confusion. "Are you FBI?"
Peter shot up, grabbing the nearest wallet, which came from the guy with sunglasses. Nothing that a cop would carry. But there was a business card.
"Nope, you're not cops," he said in a near-mumble, reading the card.
"Peter!"
"Hey, what's with this Gifted Youngsters place?" Peter asked, ignoring his sister's scolding tone as he dropped the wallet, heading over to one of his many mini-fridges.
Peter grabbed two popsicles out of the fridge, slightly melted but still solid, handing one to his brother before beginning to munch on one.
"When I knew him, he wasn't so... young."
That was all he caught out of the conversation the three men had.
"Young?" Peter asked with his mouth full. "You're just old!"
"Peter, don't be rude," Pietro said, opening his popsicle and beginning to eat it at a monstrous pace.
"Both of you, stop!" Wanda said, her eyes beginning to shimmer a bright red color.
"So you're not afraid to show your powers." one of the men said.
"Powers, what powers?" Wanda squeaked out, her eyes flaring red before returning to their usual color.
"You see something strange here?" Pietro asked, leaning against Wanda with an empty popsicle stick in his hand.
"Nothing anybody would believe if you told them?" Peter asked, a massive smirk on his face.
When he saw the tired look on one of the men's faces, he did a little internal victory dance, patting himself on the back for that.
With the cockiest fucking look on his face, Peter went over to the pong machine in his room, turning it on.
"So who are you, what do you want?"
"We need your help, Peter."
"With what?" Wanda and Pietro asked in unison, glaring daggers into the three men.
"To break into a highly secure facility. And to get someone out."
"A prison break?" Wanda asked, her eyes widening.
Peter just chuckled, smirking. "That's illegal you know."
"Well, only if you get caught."
"Okay, no. Peter's not going." Wanda said, her fists clenched by her sides.
Exactly as she said that, Peter asked "What's in it for me?"
"Peter, no, this is an awful--" "You, you kleptomaniac, get to break into the Pentagon."
Peter's fingers froze on the joystick, pausing. The Pentagon? The fucking Pentagon? Wait, were these guys actually cops? Like, undercover cops who are actually good at their jobs?
"How do I know I can trust you?" Peter asked, arching an eyebrow, slowly turning from the machine.
"Because we're just like you."
Peter stiffened, eyes bouncing between each of the three men. They all look normal, albeit a bit like hobos, but still normal. They didn't have any of the physical bits to a mutation, the lucky sons of bitches.
"Show him."
An absolutely disgusting squelching noise filled the room as the man with sideburns had bone breaking through his clenched fists, into a trio of boney claws, gnarly and super gross.
Peter's breath hitched as he watched, before gulping and nodding. "It's cool but it's disgusting."
"So? Are you coming with us?"
"No, he's not," Wanda spoke up again. "Listen, I don't know who the hell you are and why you're asking for Peter to help you break into the Pentagon, nor do I want to know who you're breaking out of the Pentagon, but my baby brother won't be joining you."
Peter rolled his eyes and scoffed. "Who are you to make decisions for me? I'm fucking 17, Wanda! I'm not gonna be staying in this damn house my whole life!"
Peter stood up, going over to his closet, and grabbing a backpack.
"Look, I know you guys are gonna drive me there and there's probably a plan. Fill me in on our way there. I need to bring food so I don't pass out on you guys."
"Peter, ple--" "We'll meet you outside. Thank you, Peter." the man with the sunglasses said as the three left the basement.
Pietro and Wanda shared a glance before heading up the stairs. "Wait for a second!"
Peter shook his head, grabbing the nearest box of food and stuffing it into his bag.
I'm not a baby. I'm 17. I can't stay here for the rest of my life because of humanity. I can't do that to myself. I'd rather be slaughtered for my mutation than sit the hell still and never leave this fucking house.
Pietro and Wanda couldn't keep him here. He loved them both to death, and he'd absolutely come to visit. But he couldn't stay. Even just a taste of adventure like this would be enough to sate him for the day. Maybe a few.
Besides, it wasn't like he was leaving for good. He was gonna come back. Probably. Y'know, assuming he doesn't get caught and shot to death.
Peter gulped.
That won't happen... right?
"Nah, I'll be fine," Peter mumbled to himself, grabbing another box of snacks and opting to grab a hair tie as well. The clock on his wall was ticking slower and slower the deeper into thought he got.
They wouldn't let him get hurt, right? He'd be a-okay.
"Slow down, you crazy child."
Peter stiffened for a moment.
That creaky stair was a blessing and a curse.
Reluctantly, he looked at Wanda, giving her a glare as time sped up. Pietro was right behind her.
"You're so ambitious for a juvenile."
Peter rolled his eyes again.
With this shit.
"But then, if you're so smart, tell me, why are you still so afraid?" Peter asked sarcastically, a scowl finding its way onto his face.
Wanda and Pietro give each other another look before they come closer to Peter. Peter went over to another side of his room, grabbing another box of food, this one already opened.
"Where's the fire? What's the hurry about?" Pietro asked, letting out a nervous laugh as he joked. The tension in the room was making everybody uncomfortable.
They get a bit closer, and Peter forcefully shoved what was bound to be a squished Twinkie into his backpack.
"You better cool it off before you burn it out. You got so much to do."
Pietro and Peter's eyes met, making Peter's resolve crack. Just a little bit. Not much. But a little bit.
Wanda's hand landing on his shoulder wasn't much help.
"And only so many hours of the day."
Wanda's voice was always soft and soothing. The Sokovian lullabies she'd hum to him when he was a child would sometimes play through his head when he was stressed out, and he'd even find himself mumbling the lyrics.
But not right now. Now wasn't the time for her calming voice. No, he had shit to do.
Peter brushed Wanda's hand off of him, storming away from them before speaking, "But you know when the truth is told, that you can get what you want, or you can just get old."
His tone was sharp, like a blade cutting open old sutures.
Pietro's brow furrowed, with a frown making its way onto his face, his own tone becoming less playful.
"You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through."
The scowl on Peter's face only deepened as he turned away from his siblings. He didn't need to hear all of this. Not right now.
Wanda, with that voice that made Peter want to cry, spoke up again. "When will you realize..."
Peter stiffened, a lump growing in his throat. They couldn't do this to him. They couldn't persuade him to stay. They couldn't do that.
"Vienna waits for you." Pietro and Wanda spoke together, Pietro's tone had softened a tad.
When the twins saw Peter's face when he turned around, their hearts broke a little.
Their younger brother had tears in his eyes, his mouth twitching as he took in one shaky breath after another. His mouth opened, only to clamp shut, gritting his teeth and shutting his eyes tight.
Peter sped over to his dresser, digging through one of his drawers, in search of his goggles.
"Slow down," Wanda began, her voice making him stop for a single second. "You're doing fine."
Pietro piped up again. "You can't be everything you want to be before your time."
Peter clicked his tongue, fresh tears beginning to roll down his face. They had the motherfucking audacity to pull that shit on him.
"Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight," Peter said sarcastically, turning around and spreading his arms out as he gave both of his siblings a teary-eyed glare.
To them, it probably looked like the glare of a child. Pathetic. Weak. Fragile.
Did he care?
"Tonight," he mumbled again.
Nope, not one bit.
Wanda took a step forward as Peter turned back around, still looking for those damn goggles.
"Too bad, but it's the life you lead," she said calmly.
She was going to start losing composure soon, Peter was sure of it. She had to crack soon. He wasn't going to let his dam burst anymore until he knows he's not the only one who wants to cry.
"You're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need."
Peter winced as though he just got a needle stabbed into his arm. A painful pinch that'd be sore for a bit, but he'd forget about it soon.
Wanda sent Pietro a glare, which made the other speedster back down a bit. But only a bit.
"Though you can see when you're wrong, you know you can't always see when you're right." Wanda and Pietro spoke at the same time, making Peter shiver.
It bugged him the hell out whenever they did that. Creepy as shit.
Wanda made it even creepier by repeating herself. "You're right."
She came closer as Pietro spoke. "You've got your passion."
"You've got your pride," Wanda said softly, taking Peter's shaky hands into her calm grip.
They need to stop. They needed to stop doing all that shit to him. They were trying to get him to stay. They shouldn't be doing that.
Peter yanked his hand out of Wanda's grip, his other hand grabbing his goggles before stuffing them in his pockets.
"But don't you know only fools are satisfied?" Peter said bitterly, staring between the twins.
He gulped as he watched Pietro glare at him, his arm going around Wanda as he did so.
"Dream on," Pietro said dully as Peter turned his back on the twins.
"But don't imagine they'll all come true." Wanda and Pietro did their freaky twin thing again, speaking at the same time.
Peter zipped up his backpack, just trying not to cry. He just needed to get past them, and into that car, and then it would be smooth sailing from there.
"When will you realize?" Wanda asked as Peter slung the backpack over his shoulder.
"Vienna waits for you." Pietro finished with a soft murmur.
Peter didn't even need to turn around for Pietro and Wanda to know what Peter's face looked like.
Hot tears burned down his face as he shoved past his older siblings, Pietro purposefully knocking Peter's shoulder with his own. A little thing they'd do when they knew they had a rough day ahead of them. A sign. A quick "good luck. I love you."
A sob got stuck in Peter's throat as he went up the stairs, hitting that creaky stair on the way up.
Wanda, with a defeated sigh, fell back onto the couch, burying her face in her hands. There wasn't any way to stop Peter. Once his mind was set on something, he was going to do it if it were the last thing he'd do.
She just worried that this would be the last thing he'd do.
Before Wanda could even speak, Pietro's hand rested on her back as he sat beside her.
"He'll be okay, Wanda."
Peter was about to leave, fingers grazing the doorknob before he paused.
He turned to the small stand by their front door, grabbing Wanda's locket from when she and Pietro were children. Carefully, he opened it, revealing pictures of Wanda and Pietro as children.
Peter's fingers clumsily fiddled with the locket before placing it around his neck before taking in a deep breath and wiping the tears from his face.
The front door of the Maximoff household swung open as Peter left the house, his hair falling in front of his face as he left, walking at a pace that seemed a tad bit too fast to be human.
The guy with sideburns was sitting in the driver's seat of the car while the two other men stood outside the car.
"Ready?" the man with the sunglasses asked.
Peter found much more interest in the markings on his shoes, staring down at his mixed shoelaces before giving a weak response.
"Yeah."
Slow down, you crazy child. Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while.
Peter got into the back seat of the car, slamming the door shut as the other two men piled into the car. He swears he heard Pietro and Wanda in his head.
It's alright, you can afford to lose a day or two
His backpack got tucked by his feet on the floor of the car, buckling his seat belt before releasing a sigh. He wanted their voices out of his head. They needed to get out of his head, or else he may actually get fucking shot because he wasn't focused on the mission.
The Maximoff house was now quiet. The only noises came from the basement.
"When will you realize?" Pietro asked, his voice barely carrying over a whisper.
"Vienna waits for you." Wanda finished softly.
The two were leaning against each other on the couch that Peter called his bed, looking around the messy room.
A picture sat on his desk, the three of them all together and smiling. Peter was only eight when they took that picture. His two front teeth were missing from his massive grin, curly brown hair framing his face. He just looked... happy.
Peter, at that moment, felt far from that young kid he used to be. His arms crossed over his chest, doing his best to seem nonchalant. But he was stressed as hell.
In Sokovian, Peter mumbled to himself "And you know that when the truth is told, that you can get what you want, or you can just get old."
Peter could live with dying young. As morbid as it may be, he's accepted his mortality. He knew people wanted him dead because he didn't share the same species name as others.
His eyes looked out the window while the man in the sunglasses and the man with the sideburns spoke in the front seat. Hopefully not to Peter, because he wasn't paying attention.
Unfortunately, instead of seeing an empty doorstep, Pietro and Wanda were standing on the porch.
Pietro's hand was still on Wanda's back, and Peter could see the tear streaks on Wanda's face from within the car.
"You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through," the two whispered, Pietro beginning to choke up "Why don't you realize?"
"Hey, kid, you alright?"
Peter turned to look at the guy with glasses who sat with him in the back seat, nodding with pursed lips.
"I'm good, man. What's the plan?"
Wanda and Pietro still stood on the doorstep, watching Peter look away from them. Wanda bit her lip, looking down at the ground as fat tears streamed down her face.
"Vienna waits for you." she and Pietro were so choked up, their speech was barely audible. "When will you realize?"
Peter listened in on the plan, nodding, but once they stopped saying his name, he looked back out the window. His sister was in tears as Pietro wiped at his face, making Peter's eyes well up a bit too.
With all he had in him, Peter mustered up a small, sad smile on his face. Luckily enough for him, his siblings looked up right then.
Peter gave a small wave, getting teary smiles and waves from his siblings.
The car's engine roared to life, and the group began to pull away from the Maximoff house. Peter turned in his seat a tad, watching as his siblings grew smaller and smaller in the window as the car pulled away from the Maximoff house.
At the same time, the twins watched as the car pulled away from their house, Wanda's body shuddering as she kept in unshed tears.
Pietro let out a heavy sigh as Wanda's head hit his shoulder.
"He'll be okay, Wanda. He always comes out of these things okay."
"He's breaking someone out of the pentagon, Piet. I don't want him to... y'know."
"Yeah... I know."
Peter turned back around in his seat, letting out a heavy sigh of his own.
"They'll be okay." the man with glasses murmured beside Peter.
His only response was a nod and a yawn. "I'm gonna rest up real quick, okay? Save up energy, and stuff."
Because I'm absolutely fucking drained.

We are not just friends — Part 19
Chris Evans x bi!latina!character (Sofia is a people of color, she’s brown.)
Chris and Sofia meet when their best friends started dating, it all started at friends with loads of bumps on the road.
Warnings: drinking, smoking, drug use (weed), assault, Chris being Steve Rogers, commitment issues, my girl Sofia kinda messy.
This is slow burn at its best, at least emotionally.
Series masterlist
Sofía had definitely closed up, she became a recluse in her own apartment and the only thing she did was go to work and back. She felt mostly okay, she wasn't crying her eyes out or seeing a random photo of Chris and crying.
She was hurt, deeply hurt but all she did was avoid thinking about him. This wasn't like the first time they broke up, this felt different. Like, this was it.
She loses one of her most precious friends and gains another failed relationship, another ex that probably will end up resenting her because they couldn't reach her and when she opens up she gets shot down.
After Chris…
Sofia was sure that she was meant to be alone and she was mostly okay with it.
On the other hand, Christopher was devastated—he honestly thought she was the one, he felt it in his gut, his heart, his whole being made him feel that she was the one. She just kept pushing him away in all the ways that she could find and he took it, until he couldn't anymore and that alone made him feel like he was failing her, he didn't know how to help her and she won't let him.
They were so far away from each other—it was exhausting and the fact that he had just started talking with Jenny again made him feel insecure about his relationship.
But he love her with all his fucking heart that it hurt his whole body knowing that she might ever be able to love him back the way he does.
"I miss him," Sofia said, putting her eyeliner on. She was going out as Amanda was very pregnant to even move.
"He does too." She said rubbing her belly. "It's been, how much time now?,"
"Four months , so he's dating Jenny. That's what I heard…" Sofia tried not to get emotional about it but… Fuck.
"Yeah, Luke told me about it… but it's going anywhere and he knows. Not sure about her though."
"He always gets back with all his exes. Got us on rotation, fucking idiot. He wants to commit but he can't actually commit with anyone. Then in the one with commitment issues," Sofia shook her head and let out a groan. "I love him, I swear to you I love him, he's a good friend but he's a terrible boyfriend."
"Right back at you," Amanda laughed and Sofia had to, because she was absolutely right about her too.
"I don't go back with all my exes, though"
"Mostly don't, Chris it's the exception."
"Because I thought it was going to be okay for once." She made a face and began putting the make up back on her little make up bag. "I can't believe he's back with Jenny, she's funny and intelligent and great—but God, I don't fucking like her." Sofia said, throwing the make-up bag on her bag and pout. "I don't want to go out now. More because I know he's here in Boston and it's not leaving until next year and I'm seeing his brother today."
"You don't wanna run into him?,"
"Of course I wanna run into him, I miss him so much but I'm totally not over him yet." Sofia explained sitting on the toilet seat looking at Amanda that was leaning in the door frame. "I don't know if I'm ever going to be over Chris."
"I'm sad now, you're make me feel sad and my boy too—
"I'm sorry—
"Don't be, I'm feeling sad because I can't go out with you and drag Chris's name all over Boston even though he's great but he left you."
Sofia smiled looking down and felt Amanda's hand running through her hair and she sighed deeply.
-
Sofía was vibing or at least trying, the place was comfy and she knew almost all the people that were there—witch where all of fucking Christopher closest friends and some random girls that the guys bring from somewhere.
Apparently he wasn't coming, which Sofia didn't know if she was actually relieved or not.
"Jesus fucking christ." She murmured to herself tried of her own fucking mind noise. She stood up and walked to the little bar area and started pouring a drink, straight whiskey and downed it all and poured herself a second and then a third walking away with the drink on her hand.
He saw her first, saw her leaning on a wall, talking with some dude —younger than her, brunette and with a fucking man bun, he was built, lean and tall. She laughed, at whatever fucking thing he said she laughed and looked at him with the little fucking straw on her lips. Oh, boy he was mad.
Chris rubbed his face and went about to hang up with his friends and mingle a little bit. But he couldn't stop looking at their direction every fucking second.
"They sure look cozy," Luke said and Chris looked at him. "Did you talk to her yet?"
"I can't talk to her, man." Chris muttered and downed the warm beer on his hand and his friend handed him another. "What I'm supposed to say?, hey, long time remember when I dump you because I'm a fucking imbecile and i cant fucking wait." He said dropping sarcasm on every word.
"That's a good opening," Luke laughed and Chris just stared at him, murdering eyes directed at his very own best friend.
"Who the fuck is that?" he asked referring to the guy she was talking with.
"A friend of Ryan's cousin."
Chris made a face and rolled his eyes. "The fuck he doing here?"
"It's Ryan's house, dude," Luke said and was a little amazed at Chris, he definitely hasn't seen him like this in a really long long time. "Man. .." Luke said, kind of amazed. "You're still head over heels in love with her, don't you?"
"I wonder what gave it away," Chris said, drinking his beer and rubbing his face. "imma talk to her,"
"Ah—don't think it's-uh," Luke was looking at them and saw them share a kiss, it was quick and he kinda went for it.
"What?," Chris said turning around and saw them just breaking the kiss and that's the moment Sofia saw him.
And her stomach dropped, her whole ass body dropped—
"Oh, woow. Are you okay?," Alex, asked her when her knees buckled and he caught her.
"Ah, yeah, yes. Just," She smiled at him and looked at her empty glass. "Little drunk, imma get more—" Sofia made an attempt to leave but Alex, bless his fucking kind heart, offered her to get her those drinks and something to eat.
As soon he leaves that was a cue to Chris, who literally strutted to the wall she was leaning and Slfia just… started.
"Hi," He said, hands on his pockets as Sofia kept looking at him. "How-how are you?"
Sofoa kept quiet and simply walked away from him, ahe couldn't possibly do the whole small talk bullshit they alwaus did and it emeded up al fucking badly. Chris looked at her go and he was the one that stormed after her.
"Sofia, come on," Chris said and walked besides her. "Sof, it's going to be like this?"
"I can't talk with you Chris, like…" She sighed and sat down on a bench, they weren't completely away from the people and there were some girls sitting on a couch messing around with their phones and minding their business.
"Why not?," He asked, looking at her. He just wanted to reach out and hug her, he missed her.
Sofía finally looked up at him and asked him, "How's things with Jenny?," Chris looked away and rubbed his beard and stayed quiet at her question for a moment.
"We're not together anymore," He said and Sofia made a face and sigh. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Are you seeing someone?" He asked looking at the bar where the dude was talking with Ryan, probably giving him the talk.
"Look, Sofia is off limits."
"What?, why? She told me she's single." Alex asked and looked back at where she was supposed to be and found Chris looking back at him with that death stare he did when he was annoyed.
"Yes, she is. But it's also Chris ex and they still didn't figure it out and he's my friend, so kid. Off limits,"
"Do you care,?" She asked, sassy.
"If I didn't I wouldn't be asking, wouldn't I?," He asked right back at her, also sassy.
"Last time I tried that, it didn't go well," Sofia said, rolling her eyes at him. "And the one before that, worse." She said at their obvious relationship and Chris just grunted. But couldn't blame her, it was a mess…
"Yeah," He murmured and dug into his pockets and fished out a packet of cigarettes. "want one?" He offered her and she took it.
"Thanks, we should smoke outside though." Sofia said walking out to the backyard where the other guys were doing the grilling.
They waved at them but kept their distance, not Scott though because it was Scott.
"So…" He said walking up to them and putting a hand on each shoulder. "You two are actually talking,"
"Not really," Sofia rolled her eyes and Chris grunted again.
"Sof," He said, putting those little blue eyes to work on him and it worked, of course it will work.
"Okay, okay…" She agreed and lit up the cigarette giving Chris a look. Thinking that the moment she found him unattractive was when she stopped looking at men all together and dedicated herself to pussy forever.
He was so fucking attractive, jesus fuck.
"Either way, is there a point here?," She asked looking at both of them. "We're good, I guess," She shrugged.
"Are we really good?," Chris asked.
"I don't know, you left me." Sofia took a drag and Scott made a face.
"And that's my cue to leave, I love you both." He said and Sofia laughed.
"And I do too." She wink at him and Chris was staring at her, waiting for Scott to leave.
"I shouldn't have done that—
"Chris, don't." She waves a hand at him. "You seriously need a new woman on your life, this thing about getting back with all your exes ia getting old as fuck."
"Ouch," He said and actually smile and so did she. "I do miss you, you know that."
"I miss you too, come on. We were really good friends for a moment there,"
"Yeah," He smiled and bit his bottom lip, shaking his head. "We fucked up, don't we?"
"Yeah, and I told you so."
"You did. Guess I didn't listen,"
"You never listen, stubborn Gemini man." She said punching him on the arm.
"Yeah, you're right but I don't regret it though."
"Me neither," She smiled and sigh, just thinking for a moment. "So, there's a wedding coming?"
"You mean ours?," He joked and Sofia barked a laugh.
"I mean our better halves, idiot. Besides, we will be divorced in the first four months."
"What?, come on I gave us at least… a year," Chris saif and Sofia made a face, disagreeing.
"Six months, tops." She said and put her hand on his month. "The thought of me being a wife, ew."
Chris laughed out loud. "You look pretty in white,"
"I look pretty in everything because I'm pretty," She rolled her eyes with a smile. "But, jokes aside. Do you see yourself married?"
"I like the idea of marriage but… Honestly, I don't know."
"I preferred to have a kid before marriage, it's just a fucking paper in the end. You can divorce, I think I'll know when I have a kid, if I have a kid."
"We never had this talk before," Chris said and pointed at a little bench for them to sit. "About us,"
"Did you think about it?" Sofia asked as she sat down beside him. Chris was holding his beer between his legs and looking forward.
"Yeah, I mean…" He looked at her. "I have never been this in love with someone like I am with you, so yeah. I did, a couple of times actually."
Sofia was dumbfounded at what he said, and she did toyed with the idea a couple of times…
"I almost propose to you, actually…" He laughed and Sofias head snapped so hard to look at him. "After you met my mom, I bought that ring you liked. I thought that maybe someday…" He shrugged and Sofia's eyes watered up and just stared forward.
"Chris, I…" She whispered and he looked at her.
"What's wrong?," He asked, frowning.
"What's wrong!?," She said, wiping her tears. "Dude, are you hearing what you are saying to me?."
Chris realized it at that moment, what he did. Bomb after bomb he just dropped on her.
"Sorry, I got carried away." He muttered slouching on the bench and drank the rest of his beer.
"You'll find someone, Chris…" Sofia said in a small voice.
"Already found her," He muttered and stood up and walked away.

Crush (Nick x Reader)
A/n: Hey guys so it was brought to my attention and I also kinda noticed that my writing looks clustered as hell on tumblr cause I’m just not used to writing on it. So I’m gonna start typing my stories on Wattpad and transferring them onto tumblr cause it’s just easier for me since I’ve been writing on Wattpad for years. Let me know if it’s easier to read and if you guys would prefer it if I changed the rest of my previous imagines to this layout!
Requested by: Fallonburns (Wattpad)
Warnings: None I think. A kiss? I don’t know if you need to be warned about that. Okay bye!
————
As a member of the school dance committee it was part my job to push ideas and work out any kinks before a dance could happen. That included booking food, decorations, and of course entertainment.
"Come on y/n! Julie and her hologram band could totally blow the roof off this place and you know it" Flynn spoke as I walked down the hall towards my locker.
"Of course I know it Flynn and I know Julie would kill it but it's not my decision. Plus the dance is tomorrow. Who knows if Dinas gonna wanna add another entertainer for the night besides you?" I spoke to one of my longest friends.
"Well will you at least put in a good word?"
"I'll see what I can do" I said putting in my locker combination.
"Yes! Thank you"
Seconds later I groaned feeling my body particularly my head collide with the small metal door in a split second.
"Y/n!" I heard Flynn shout helping me regain my balance.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry" I heard a familiar voice making my heart rate pick up.
"Nick" I panted attempting to recover the air that was just knocked out of me.
"Y/n I didn't mean to really. Ethan threw the ball and I tried to catch it I-I'm sorry"
"It's cool. I'm totally fine" I attempted to play it off as I grabbed my binder from my locker.
"If totally fine means you've got a concussion then yeah you seem great" Flynn said making me scowl at her.
"Do you need to go to the nurse? I can walk you if you want" He said putting a hand on my head exactly where it had made contact with my locker door.
"Nick I'm fine really" I smiled removing his hand. I finally made eye contact with the boy who stood there smiling back at me. His beautiful blue eyes taking my breath away once more. Knocking out of the trance I glanced back at Flynn to see her eyeing me suspiciously.
“Are you sure?”
"Positive. I've gotta get to class. I'll see you later" I said pulling Flynn away from the scene in a hurry.
"Yeah, later" Nick called out to us as we continued down the hall.
"Seriously? Nick? What is it with that boy? I mean first Julie now you"
"Now me what? I don't like Nick. Julie likes Nick"
"Yeah if Nicks name started with L and rhymed with Duke" I looked at the girl in confusion.
"What?"
"Nothing. Julie doesn't like Nick anymore but it seems you do and as one of your oldest friends I think it's my job to tell you to go for it"
"Last time you told me to go for something I ended up on the school dance committee. I have 500 balloons to blow up by tomorrow" I said walking towards Carrie and Kayla. Kayla sent me a smile earning a pointed look from Carrie.
"Kayla. Carrie. I hope to see you guys at the dance this Thursday" I spoke smiling at the two girls.
"Sounds interesting. But I'm busy with Nick. You know MY boyfriend" She said putting emphasis on the word my.
"Plus if Flynn's gonna DJ I just don't know if I'd make it through the night"
I put an arm in front of Flynn to hold her back before turning back to the two girls.
"Well take a flyer anyways just in case" I grinned taking one from the stack in my binder.
"Thanks" Kayla said taking the flyer out of my hands.
"I hope to see you there" I sent the two another fake smile before walking away with Flynn to our next class.
"How do you talk to her without going off on her?"
"Well for starters it takes a lot of patience. They don't say fake it til you make it for nothing" I giggled along with Flynn as she looped her arm around my own.
I strutted down the hall walking towards music room where I knew Flynn and Julie would be at this time excited to give them the news.
Suddenly I felt someone grab my arm and spin me around to face them.
“Oh Nick" I said looking up at the boy in front of me. A blush creeping onto my face as I noticed the intense look he was sending me.
"What's up?" I questioned cautiously.
"We're friends right?"
"Yeah of course why?"
"I need a favor"
"A favor? A favor like what?" I asked watching his gaze flicker to our right. I turned to see Carrie and the rest of dirty candy walking towards us.
Before I could process what came next my body collided with the cold metal lockers behind me as Nick pushed his lips onto mine.
I slowly melted into the kiss wrapping my arms around his neck pulling him closer. But he didn't seem to mind.
"Nick" Carries voice interrupted what had soon become a make out session. The boy in front of me pulled away first keeping his hands firmly on my waist.
"Oh Carrie. What do you want?"
"We need to talk"
"I'm a little busy here" He said tilting his head towards me.
"Well become unbusy"
"I would but we have nothing to talk about. I told you yesterday we're over and that's it"
"We're not over until I say we're over"
"I'd say your pretty over"
"Oh shut it y/n. I know this is fake because Nick would never like a girl like you. I mean look at yourself. Pathetic" She talked with anger evident in her voice.
"Don't talk to her like that" Nick spoke turning to stand in front of me.
“Nick it's fine. She's right"
"No she's not. I'd rather be with someone who's kind, gentle, and doesn't have the personality of a mountain lion" Nick said glaring at Carrie who stood there with a smirk.
"You'll be back Nicky. See you Friday at the dance" She said walking away her posse hot on her tail.
"Thanks for sticking up for me Nick. You didn't have to. And sorry if I wasn't believable enough"
"You were great. Amazing! And I'll always stick up for you. You know that" He said smiling down at me.
"I know. I'd just prefer it if every time we met you didn't push me against the lockers. They’re cold and made out of metal you know?" I joked making him chuckle.
"Yeah sorry about that. And I'm sorry for dragging you into this. It's just Carrie won't leave me alone"
"I kinda figured when you shoved your tongue down my throat" I giggled watching a cute grin form on his face.
"Yeah yeah. I didn't hear you complaining"
"Well I mean you're not the worst kisser" I said biting my lip watching him get flustered.
"I can do better than that. I was just under pressure"
"Then I guess you'll have to prove it to me later" I spoke confidently before turning around walking in the direction I was heading.
"Hey! Wait!" He called out after me. "Yeah?" I questioned turning around.
"Are you going to the dance?" He asked shoving his hands in his pocket
"Yeah I have to. I kinda helped planned it" I called back smiling at him.
"So I'll see you there"
"See you there" I spoke turning back around reaching the end of the hall.
I pushed open the doors to the band room open only to hear a loud thud.
"Flynn?" I questioned seeing the girl on the ground.
"Are you okay?" I asked helping her up
"She's fine" Someone else in the room spoke.
"Oh hey Julie" I grinned at the girl who sat at the piano.
"Hey y/n"
"So are you gonna explain to me why you were on the floor?"
"Sure just as soon as you explain to me why Nick had you pushed up against the lockers" My face fell in embarrassment as I looked at Julie in panic.
"Julie it's not-"
"It's okay y/n. I'm over him. I kinda moved onto someone else"
"Really?"
"Really. You have my blessing" She confirmed with a grin.
"Thanks. Now that that's over. You were spying on me weren't you?" I questioned turning to Flynn.
"Whaaat no. I would never"
"She was spying" Julie confirmed for me once more.
"Thought so. I'll explain everything later I came to find you guys cause I have great news" I grinned pulling out a flyer from my backpack.
"Performing at Thursday nights dance is Julie and her hologram band" I smiled showing Flynn the paper.
"Wait what?" Julie asked with a surprised look on her face.
"I haven't told her"
"You haven't told her?" I asked with an exasperated look knowing this was gonna be a long evening.
It was Thursday night and I was running around making sure everything was going according to plan.
“Hey how’s she doing?” I asked Flynn nervously biting my lip.
“Not good. Her band she can’t get a hold of them......literally” Flynn explained making me nod my head.
“It’s just it’s 11:20 already”
“I know but this means a lot to her”
“I understand. Just keep stalling with your amazing dj skills” I smiled giving the girl a thumbs up.
“Thanks y/n. You’ve been running around all night why don’t you take a break?”
“I can’t even if I wanted to”
“Come on! Look Nicks been staring at you all night. If you pull him on the dance floor I’ll play something smooth. Something slow” She smirked at me bumping my shoulder.
“No you will not” I warned the girl. Looking over to the blonde boy who was evidently looking our way. Looking at me. He sent me a smile to which I smiled back at.
“Try me” She said making me playfully roll my eyes.
“I’ve gotta go” I spoke watching Daisy at the punch table wave me over.
“Duty calls” Flynn said before I walked away.
“What’s wrong?” I asked the brunette reaching the table on the far end of the gym.
“I’ve gotta go to the bathroom can you serve punch for like 5 minutes”
“Sure” I smiled moving behind the table taking the apron out of her hands. I threw it over my neck attempting to tie it from the back.
“I’ve got it” Someone spoke from behind me taking the strings away and tying them in a perfect knot.
“Nick. Thank you” I simpered at the boy who moved around the table to stand in front of me.
“No problem. I’m glad I finally got you alone. You look great by the way”
“I know this apron is pretty great huh?” I toyed with the boy.
“You can make anything look good”
“I try. Punch?” I asked holding up a plastic cup.
“Please” I quickly served him a cup handing it over to him.
“Thanks. You did amazing with this whole dance”
“Yeah well Dina wanted it to be perfect since it’s our first dance of the year”
“Dina did not disappoint. Neither did you of course. Promise you’ll save me a dance” He asked my cheeks heating up.
Abruptly I felt a tap on my shoulder to see Daisy was back. I handed her back the apron before moving around the table where Nick was.
“Or we could dance now?” I suggested watching him put his cup down.
“Sounds good m’lady” He spoke sticking his hand out for me. I giggled taking it and letting him sweep me towards the dance floor.
I laughed along with him as he began to dance goofily to the music purposely.
“You have an amazing laugh”
“Nick if you don’t stop complimenting me it’s gonna look like I put on 10 pounds of blush by the end of the night”
“Well you don’t need makeup you know”
“That’s what all guys say until they see what you really look like”
“Well you’ve always been naturally beautiful. Even in 8th grade when you wore no makeup at all”
“Don’t remind me I looked terrible”
“Not to me you didn’t” He said looking into my eyes. For a split moment the world around us stopped moving and it felt like we were the only ones in the room.
At least until I felt someone bump into me pushing me forward into the boy.
“I’m so sorry” I said realizing his hands had caught my body.
“It’s cool are you okay?” He asked.
“Yeah y/n are you okay?” A familiar voice asked from behind me.
I turned around to come face to face with Carrie who stood there with a devilish look in her eye.
“I’m fine”
“Oh how unfortunate. You know I didn’t see you as the dancing type. You’ve always had two left feet”
“Leave her alone Carrie” Nick spoke attempting to move forward. I put my arm up to hold him back.
“No Nick it’s ok she’s not worth my time or yours”
“Whatever. This dance is lame anyways”
“Then maybe go home”
“I will. Nick care to join me?” She smirked dangling her plastic cup in her hands.
“No I’m having a good time here” Nick spoke intertwining his hand with mine. I looked down slightly smiling at the gesture.
“Wow. Fine have fun.......with her” Carrie said moving to pass by me.
I suddenly gasped feeling a cold sensation hit my body.
“Oops sorry” The witch spoke before walking away.
“What’s her problem?” I asked ready to go after her only to be held back.
“Hey, you said it yourself. She’s not worth our time” Nick whispered holding me by my shoulders.
“Your right. I don’t even think it’s worth trying to clean this up” I said pointing out the red stain on the side of my dress.
“Here. It isn’t exactly cute but it’ll help cover up the stain” He said putting his jean jacket over my shoulders.
“It’s perfect. Thanks Nick. For everything”
“This is one of the last few songs of the night. Dedicated to a very special friend of mine so grab your partners close and tell HIM or her how you feel” Flynn’s voice rang through the gym speakers.
A slow song beginning to play throughout the gym. Couples beginning to form on the dance floor.
I looked up at the girl on the stage to see her send me a quick wink. Playfully rolling my eyes I looked back at the boy in front of me, his hand lingering in the air.
“Can I have this dance?”
“Of course” I grinned taking it. Allowing him to pull me close.
We swayed side to side along to music with smiles plastered on our faces.
“You know I never thought I’d finally get here”
“Finally?” I asked pulling away looking up at him.
“Guess it’s now or never huh? Okay. Y/n I’ve had a crush on you for the longest time. So long Carrie started to notice. After she found out I rammed you into the lockers the other day she went crazy”
“Really? She was that jealous”
“Insanely. But after I talked to you that day I realized this crush wasn’t going anywhere”
“You know I’m really glad to hear you say that Nick cause I feel the same way”
“That’s good. Because I can finally prove you so wrong” He smirked leaning down and pulling me into a passionate kiss. The first (technically second) one of the many that were yet to come.

ocean eyes – chris evans
previous part: PART XVII — masterlist
concept: you surprise chris for his birthday while he's shooting in italy. the slowest of slow burns. the ever anticipated part eighteen of many.
pairing: chris evans x reader
word count: 4.3k
warnings: fluff. just prepare to melt.
author's note: everyone can thank @tonystankschild for this one. she was deep in the dm's asking for fluff and i intended to deliver the fluffiest of fluffs.
You liked to consider yourself a rational person at the best of times.
That consideration, however, was entirely negated by the fact that you were now on a flight to Italy to surprise Chris for his birthday. There was nothing rational about it.
But you had saved for this trip, and Chris had done so much for you in the past year or so, that you had wanted to do something for him.
And you had decided that no one should be alone on their birthday, no matter how far away they were.
You had caught a flight from Boston after making the forty-four hour roadtrip to drive Dodger there, not having the funds to fly him to the Evans' household. The fees of bringing an animal on board were astronomical, and you were still balking from how high the number was.
Chris was a wealthy man, however, and those types of costs never quite fazed him as much as they did you.
So you had driven him to Lisa's, a thousand thank yous on your lips as she delivered you to the airport to minimize on the extra cost of leaving your car at the airport parking lots.
Scott – who had still been there from the Patriot's game, "tryin' to get as much family lovin' as he could" as he put it – smiled knowingly at you when you had brought Dodger in.
"You go, baby vamp," he'd whispered to you. It was an outdated saying, but you knew it anyways, and laughed him off.
"We're just friends, Scott."
"Yeah, just like these highlights are from the sun."
He had given you a tight hug, wished you luck on your trip, and – like Lisa would later do at the drop off – made you promise to wish Chris a happy birthday from them.
When you touched down in Italy, it was early morning, that hovering between night and dawn.
You had once again called Chris' agent – Mark – to get details on the shoot, ones which he reluctantly handed over.
You thought that perhaps he was trying to save Chris the PR scandal of being seen with another woman while publicly in a relationship with Lily, but you had pointed out that you had been clearly established as friend of the couple with your global third wheel memes. It didn't take much pressing, because Mark knew how much you both cared about each other and how happy you being there for Chris' birthday would make the actor. So he emailed you the shooting location, with a schedule and call sheet. The tagline was very quick: "Don't interrupt shooting :)"
After a quick shower at the affordable three star you'd rented for the weekend, you got ready in spite of the weariness the plane left you with. Hot water did wonders to waken you, and a touch of makeup never hurt.
You stepped out in the warm breeze, the wind toying softly with the skirt of the summer dress you wore. You easily hailed a cab, and, after failing at the pronunciation of where you were headed, let the cabbie read the location off your phone.
The first person you saw when you got out of the car was Chris.
He was stood off to the side by the craft table, a crewmate quickly doing a last minute adjustment to his hair as he went over his lines. Dressed in an Italian pinstripe suit, you remembered what the film was about.
The indie flick told the tale of an arranged marriage between the son of an Irish mob boss and the daughter of a New York mafia don. Most of the film, however, was set in Italy, where the son, Mickey, had to travel to win the favour of the extended mafia family for the blessing on the union. Briefly, the scene with the strawberries popped into your mind.
You were stopped by security, but Mark – who had been waiting for you – vouched for your admittance.
You stood a little ways away from Chris, within eyesight, but not obvious. It was a surprise, after all.
You called him, watching from where you leaned against his trailer wall. Chris, ringtone blaring for his attention, quickly patted down his suit pockets before finding the device. His glance at the caller I.D. was followed by his whole face lighting up, soft smile on his lips.
"Hey there, Sleeping Beauty," he said into the receiver. "Isn't it a little late in L.A.?"
"It is," you replied. "But it's your birthday tomorrow, and I couldn't resist."
"You know, I've been told I'm irresistible before," he chuckled. "Just never thought I'd hear you say it."
"Well, what can I say? Suits do it for me," you smirked, dropping your first hint.
Scott was right. Chris really could be clueless. "You'd love the one they just put me in then," he murmured, distracted by the food on display at the craft table as he perused the options. "A real classy number."
"What are your plans for the rest of the weekend?"
"They gave me the weekend off to celebrate, but you know me... Probably will go wine tasting by myself and look at some art or something. Oh, man, read a book. Yeah, haven't done that in a while."
You watched as he plucked a strawberry from the table, and your stomach fluttered.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Hmm?" He hummed as he bit in to the sweet fruit.
"Aren't you sick of strawberries by now?"
Chris froze, eyes wide in shock. Running his tongue over his teeth smoothly and swallowing the bite, he began swiveling his head, trying to look out for where you may be hiding. "Where are you?" He grinned.
"Guess."
And then he saw you.
And then he had you wrapped in his arms, the force of the running tackle hug sending your back crashing into the trailer, metal creaking.
You laughed breathlessly, hanging up the call as you hugged him back.
"Chris," you strained against the bone crush of his fierceness. "Oxygen–"
He loosened his grip, but didn't take back his arms. "You have no idea how much I missed you."
His whispery breath in your hair as he deeply inhaled the apple scented shampoo clinging to you had electricity coursing through your veins. "My bones have some idea, I think you might've fractured a rib."
The rumble of the chuckle reverberated through his body and into yours, and heat dusted your ears and cheekbones. "Sorry, I just can't believe you're here. I had to make sure you were real." And then, the question you'd expected: "Where's Dodger?"
"Dodger is in Boston with your mom. And I'm here, I'm real," you reassured him, smoothing your hands over the back of the meticulously woven cotton of his suit. "But you also have a real job to get back to."
"Oh, right," he groaned sheepishly. In his joy, he'd almost forgotten where he was. "Just hang around for a bit, we're only filming a little today before we're off."
So you did. You got given a seat, just off camera, and watched Chris do his thing. His performance was breathtaking, the way he embodied such a dangerous man. It was enough to make you flushed, the square of his shoulders, the confidence in his stride – the danger lurking under Italian silk lined cotton. You'd never quite seen him like this.
And it thrilled you to see a man you usually felt so safe around look so menacing.
It was the love proclamation scene that served to be your undoing, however.
The director kept hounding Chris, demanding retake after retake. He wanted that genuine love to flow through, and it simply just wasn't.
"Think of someone you love," the director suggested. "Put them in your mind's eye. You have a girlfriend, yes? Would it help to bring a picture for you to look at off camera? Tell the picture you love her. Someone get me a picture of this man's lover, please! Imagine you've never told her how you feel. And you've been feeling it for a while, and even though it was very... what is the English word? Uncommon? It was uncommon meeting circumstances you met... You love her. Si?"
Chris grit his teeth and nodded, ready to comply. And once the picture was brought out, the call for quiet on set rang out.
But once the director called action, Chris didn't look at Lily. Your heart clenched, your breath catching in your throat.
No, his eyes found you.
"I love you," he said the words you'd never thought you'd hear him say – at least not to you – and the sincerity in his cracked voice was overwhelming. His eyes were watery, relief dropping his shoulders – as if he'd kept this inside for too long and a weight had been lifted. He sighed it again and again, as if it was the only thing that was going to save him, as if it's the only words he'd ever known.
And when the director called cut, singing Chris' praises, he was still looking at you.
———————
"I still can't believe you're wearing that," Chris chuckled.
You dipped your sunglasses lower on the bridge of your nose to observe him critically. He was leaning against a Vespa, arms folded, the sleeves of his loose white cotton button down rolled up to his elbows, barely containing the bulge of his muscles. Black trousers clad his legs, on his feet a pair of black Italian leather loafers he'd gotten as a gift from his co-star. He wore his own pair of sunglasses, hair swept back, being tousled by the passing breeze.
The statement had been made in reference to the silk scarf you wore, twisted around your neck delicately in a way that was reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. "If I'm going to have a Roman holiday," you giggled, tripping a little on your way to the Vespa – Chris moved to catch you, but you righted yourself, "you best believe I'm going to fucking look like it."
You had gone to a wine tasting in a vineyard on the outskirts of Rome, somewhere far into the countryside. You had both goofed off the entire time, earning yourselves scolding looks from the sophisticated tourists and the locals, who had wanted a peaceful afternoon at the farm.
You sniffed the wines, obnoxiously listing all the strange terminology the haughty wine connoisseurs would throw around casually, before taking your sips.
It became somewhat of an inside joke between the two of you, finding yourselves lagging behind the group because you couldn't stop laughing. And whenever you were shot a dirty look, it would only make you laugh more.
"You're meant to taste it," he'd whispered to you.
"I am tasting it," you shot back.
"No, you're chugging it like a sixteen year old whose parent made the unwise choice of leaving unsupervised."
The tour guide had been eyeing the two of you up, waiting for your silence. The rest of the tour group turned their critical gaze too, and you gave Chris' foot a soft stomp to get his attention.
Both of you shut up, giggling under your breaths as Chris had practically bowed in his gesture for the guide to continue.
But now it was time to go back to the inner city, and Chris had waited patiently for you by the Vespa while you'd gone to freshen up a bit. The cobblestones were hell for your tipsiness, but you were wine and laugh drunk, and hadn't a care in the world.
"You know how they say there's always that one pair of annoying people on wine tastings that ruin the experience for everyone?"
"They do?" Chris' brow creased in question as he grinningly handed you your helmet.
"Of course they do. Well, I couldn't find them, so it must be us."
Chris clicked his own helmet in place as he caught sight of the hostess by the front door giving you both a dirty look. "What finally gave it away?"
He slid easily onto the Vespa seat, heeling up the kickstand and righting the orientation.
"Hop on, princess," he beckoned you with a nod. You regretted wearing a dress for this part, but you were serious about the Roman Holiday aesthetic.
Serious enough to risk flashing someone as you mounted the scooter behind Chris. But luckily you didn't.
"Hold on tight," Chris called over his shoulder. You complied, encircling your arms around his waist, pressing your bodies together.
You could feel his heart rate pick up, but before you could think too much about it, he took off – cobblestone streets and ivy climbed buildings flying past you in your bliss.
————————
Two of the three worst things that could've happened to you while riding a scooter in the countryside did.
The scooter had broken down and it had started to rain. Not only rain, but fucking pour. You were drenched through to your skin, pulled over on the side of the road, Chris trying to kickstart the machine into working again.
After his fifth attempt, he came over to you, squinting in the rain.
"It's not working," he shouted over the droning rainfall. "Let's just find some shelter and come up with a game plan!"
There were nothing but open spans of green fields and wheat as far as your eyes could see. But a little while back, just over the hill, there had been lights in the haze of rain, a little nondescript sign on the side of the road that you'd whipped past suggesting the shelter that you so desperately craved.
"I think there was a house back there," you yelled back. "Maybe they could help out."
He nodded imperceptibly in the shower of droplets, hand on the small of your back, fitting so seamlessly in the curve of your spine, and began guiding you.
You both dashed across the road, and then you were tearing through the long grass in a shortcut to the twinkling beacons of the lights in the windows, looking like eyes peering at you in the darkness.
Somewhere along the way, you'd found out that Chris was a little ticklish at his waist, and after you'd discovered it – he'd flinched away from you and begged you to stop, but you'd continued just to antagonise him – you wouldn't let it go. It took you much longer to get there than would be normal, but soon, you were both stood, shivering and drenched on the porch step.
There was a sign on the door telling you it was a little inn – an underused bed and breakfast, most likely for road weary travelers on their way to Rome.
You didn't bother knocking as you entered the lobby, spilling inside with laughter still on both your lips. Muddied shoes squelched, and your sodden clothes dripped onto the floor.
You immediately moved to the fire while Chris went to go confer with the front desk.
His two months in Rome had taught him a fair amount of Italian, but it was still quite broken, and he found himself floundering with a lot of the words.
The landlady – a portly old woman with an extraordinarily kind smile and crows footed crinkles by her eyes – understood the predicament.
She explained to him in English – loud enough in the silence so you could hear over the crackle of the fire – that the road services would probably only be available to come out so far tomorrow morning, and that it'd be best to stay the night.
She didn't seem like someone who would scam you into staying at her little roadside hostel – even going so far as to give Chris some white fluffy towels for the both of you.
He paid for the last room available with soggy money, and returned to you, fresh towels in his arms.
He draped one over your shoulders first, and when you reached out to cling it to your frame, your fingers brushed.
That same electricity jolted through you both, travelling with lightning quick velocity down both your spines to spark alive the restless butterflies you had well and truly thought you had put to rest. You were the first to withdraw, allowing Chris to put a towel over himself.
He ran it through his hair, the pieces that had been plastered to his skin with water raising into spikes.
You laughed, reaching out a tentative hand – giving him ample time to withdraw should he need to – to smooth it back and away from his face.
But your laughter died down, as it inevitably did whenever he looked down at you like that. Because how the hell were you meant to function when his eyes were on your lips the way they were now?
And you damn near choked when he started leaning down, lips pressing closer to yours...
But before they touched, he broke into a gut-wrenching smirk, moving past your tingling and awaiting mouth to whisper in your ear. "I dibs the shower."
And then he was sprinting up the stairs.
You were so in shock that for a minute you couldn't even register what had happened, and when you did, you cursed at him, following him up, swearing you'll skin him alive.
And all the while, the landlady was watching the two of you, a knowing glimmer in those kind eyes. She muttered something in Italian, one she repeated many a time during your stay, a saying you would come to know as "young love."
And she didn't even care that you had tracked mud into her hotel and soaked the carpets through from your wet clothes.
She just cared that there were still kids in love in this world.
———————
Once you had both taken a shower and were wrapped up in your complimentary hotel bathrobes, you realised that neither of you were tired.
Your clothes were laid out, sprawled over the backs of chairs, drying by a fire Chris had taken the liberty of building.
So you both decided to go downstairs, and see what activities you could engage in with the other guests. It would do well to help you forget the prospect of having to share a bed with Chris.
According to the landlady, this was the last room available. And of course, Chris had offered to sleep on the floor, as gentlemanly as ever.
But you couldn't do that to him on his birthday, so you'd told him it would be fine, as long as a pillow fort was built to prevent any unnecessary contact.
The common area was woefully empty, save for a couple of sleepy looking musicians, poised atop their makeshift stage, on the brink of passing out on their instruments.
When you and Chris entered, however, they livened up, striking up some traditional Italian melody you may have heard before in passing.
It wasn't that late, so the bar was still open, and Chris managed to purchase a bottle of wine.
Most of the seats had been stacked on the tables, and he helped you pull some down before seating yourselves.
He poured you both wine, and you sat there in your robes, listening to the music.
The landlady came by, at some point, to light the tea light candle on your table.
When you thanked her, she said the same thing she had said earlier – in Italian, so you struggled to understand.
Chris, however, who had been taking a hearty sip of wine, nearly choked. "Mille grazie," he winked.
She scoffed, patting his cheek affectionately, much like a grandmother would her grandson. You didn't catch much of what she said, aside from one word. Cacciatore, in reference to a flirtatious man.
"What did she say to you?"
"She said amore giovane. It means young love."
You turned to try and find her – wanting to correct the innocent mistake of having her assume that you and Chris were in love. Fact of the matter was, there was still with Lily, and you couldn't stand to think of the PR nightmare it would be if it were to get out that he was at an admittedly romantic bed and breakfast with you of all people. "Oh, no, we aren't..." You faded out awkwardly. "He has a girlfriend!"
"Actually," Chris said softly, as if he had been wanting to tell you this for a while. "I don't. Not anymore. Not since the last day at the Hamptons."
Relief flooded you, followed by something undetermined – hope, you would later discover – before you were floored with absolute sympathy. "Oh, Chris. Chris, I'm so sorry."
You reached over to link your fingers in a reassuring hand hold, and his focus was pulled to that singular touch, that point of joining.
"If there's anything I can do to help..."
"No, it just..." He swallowed, finally pulling those ocean eyes to you. "It just wasn't meant to be, I guess. She wasn't the one."
His eyes told a story much deeper, hinting to something that you didn't have the strength to uncover. You'd been hurt too many times by these false feelings, you really weren't sure how ready you were to face them once more.
"What happened?"
"She thinks I'm in love with someone else." When you didn't say anything again – too stunned to do so – Chris cleared his throat. "I, uh," he tried for a smile, "I believe you owe me a dance."
It took you a while to recall him asking you to save him the last dance at the charity gala, and when it registered, you grinned, questions of who dissipating. "Let's go dance."
The band saw you and Chris approach the dancefloor, and immediately switched to a slow waltz. Chris took you in his arms, and as you both swayed to the music, you could almost imagine you were back in Vegas, before Lily, before everything, when the biggest problem in your life was that you had kissed your best friend on your birthday.
His body was so warm pressed to yours, that you felt every tense muscle in your body relax. That hand – forever fitted so perfectly to the groove of the small of your back – traced delicate patterns through the flannel of the gown.
Your cheek was on his chest, and your eyes were closed, and you couldn't see the way he was looking at you.
Because in his eyes – those beautiful ocean eyes – was a love. The love that you were incapable of seeing, but one that everyone else had – including Lily.
There was worship in every sapphire fleck, and there was pure adoration in the inky depths of his pupils.
And as he held you, body nestled so perfectly against his, knew that the angels would damn themselves for you. Because he sure as hell would.
———————
When Chris had gone to get more drinks – the bottle you had shared being finished – you had gone to speak to the musicians.
And surprisingly, they had what you had requested.
Chris was uncorking the bottle when you had hopped up on stage.
There was no microphone this time, and the musicians were glad to receive a break, joining the landlady at the back for a drink – leaving you and Chris alone in the room. Their departure caught his attention, and he glanced at you, before doing a double take.
You were sat at the edge of the stage – feet dangling off to graze the floor every now and then – and in your hands was a ukelele.
The memory of the last time you played for him was chased away by the excitement of this next song.
You were tuning it when you finally noticed Chris watching you. He had that look in his eye – one you were so used to seeing, but one you never quite let yourself understand – and he slowly sank into his seat to watch you. He propped his head on a fist, candlelight flickering in his eyes.
And without much of an introduction, you plucked at the strings delicately, beginning a ukelele rendition of "La Vie En Rose."
His smile broadened into a beam when you started singing. Never had he felt absolute peace like this – at least without having you in his arms.
Hold me close and hold me fast
This magic spell you cast
This is la vie en rose
You looked up at him, your expression earnest. You always found yourself being much more capable of conveying emotion in your actions, rather than with your words. Words made things messy. Music... that was beauty incarnate.
When you kiss me, heaven sighs
And though I close my eyes
I see la vie en rose
Chris breathed in deeply, his heart stuttering, but heavy in his chest. The hold – that spell – you so flawlessly cast on him was rising again, and he knew, with all certainty, that he would not wish to break the enchantment for anything in the world. He was Icarus, and you were the sun – the magnetic pull he felt was that strong.
When you press me to your heart
I am in a world apart
A world where roses bloom
Your eyes found his and you grinned, beguiling him. As you played the interlude, you mouthed to him "happy birthday;" and it was. It was perhaps one of the happiest birthdays he'd had in a while, because it was the one he'd spent with you.
And when you speak, angels sing from above
Everyday words seem to turn into love songs
His heart was swelling, throat thick with emotion. His eyes burned, but he was almost certain the tears gathering was from a lack of blinking. He didn't want to pull his gaze away from you, not for a single second. He had told you he had loved you earlier that day – and this felt like more of a response than he'd ever receive. He knew how difficult it was for you to say those words. And he was okay with that. He'd take what you gave, and you were giving him this – a song as lovely as the woman who was currently singing it. And he thought he was going to simply die when you looked up at him with those eyes, and that smile, and that voice reaching out to him, singing that final verse.
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose
Little did you know, you already owned those things.
You'd owned them since the night you met.

Gimme Love, 2/9 (Miz Cracker/Blair St Clair) - Grinder
AN: Heyo, yall! Just hope yall are enjoying this fic so far. I worked really hard on it, but so proud. So many times I just wanted to quit it. But I stuck it out!
Major TW for this chapter: Child abuse mentions // mental breakdown // Anxiety // Dementia mentions
2020
I flinched, feeling a hand lightly slap my foot twice. "Wake up, Princess."
I rolled over slightly, blinking as if to clear my vision. Jujubee looked as if she had been awake for hours, looking fresh as fuck in her dressing gown. She must have had a shower hours before because, despite the dry hair, I could smell the mango and papaya soap. Fuck, it smelt so good.
Then there was me; hair wrecked, makeup long expired, body smelling of that typical hangover smell. Like a hospital, except unclean.
I whined like a child, rolled back over on my stomach and buried my face hoping it would stop my head from pounding.
"Nope. Not happened." Jujubee sat down on the bed and shook me.
"What time is it?" I asked with my face still smushed into the pillow.
"It's 2PM." She answered.
That's what got me up. I threw the covers back and went to stand. "Fuck!"
Jujubee grabbed my hand and pulled me back down. "Relax. It's our day off, remember?"
I whined even more, curling up with my head in her lap.
"Not that it makes a difference considering you're always late anyway," Jujubee added as she stroked my unbrushed hair.
"Shut up. I'm the boss. I can do what I want." I mumbled.
"Ah, Brianna Caldwell, you never change." Jujubee quipped. "Only follows the rules whenever it suits her, bosses everyone around - -"
"I do not, you whore. And can you please not speak to me so loud right now?" I pulled myself up and tousled my hair. "I need some shades or something."
I always needed shades when I was hungover, so Jujubee was already prepared. She pulled them from her pocket and handed them over. "Shade up, baby girl."
Life was already so much better with them on.
"But back to the topic at hand, though. Don't you remember the chess boys from high school?" Jujubee spoke a bit quieter now. "You literally bossed them around."
"They let me boss them around 'cause they wanted to sleep with me, Jujubee," I replied, reaching for my phone.
"And, you bossed me around too." Jujubee raised her brows.
"Mmmm, I don't remember that." I hummed, feeling pretty much over the conversation.
It took Jujubee an hour to convince me to get out of bed and clean myself up. After finally getting showered and dressed, we were out of the apartment and already heading to Starbucks.
I could have made my own coffee, but that required effort. And that I wasn't willing to give that day.
We were sitting at a booth in the back, with minimal effort in trying to go incognito. But this was a regular hang out for us. There was no need to worry about our names being shouted out. The baristas eventually learned to just bring our orders to us. It made Jujubee feel bad, but I didn't mind.
The barista, Kyle, came over and put our drinks down on the table.
"I deserve this. I really, really deserve this." I said, already taking a sip of my coffee.
"Congrats on last night. The boss said if you both need a refill, just let me know." Kyle winked. God bless Kyle. "So, When's the launch day?"
"Kyle, as charming as you are, you'll just have to wait like everybody else." I tried my best to beam a smile.
"Alright. Enjoy, ladies." And Kyle walked away.
Jujubee let her eyes follow for a moment longer. I know she was literally staring at nothing in particular, but I decided to have a bit of fun. "Go ask him out, Juju."
"Girl, you ask him out," Jujubee smirked. "I'm happy enough being a crazy cat lady. I don't need no man."
I knew it was a joke. Jujubee wasn't the type to encourage me to find someone. It was like she knew how it could bother me.
Despite liking the single life, I kind of did like the sound of being with someone. Maybe it was the fear of the past that stopped me from pursuing a relationship. I had a few girlfriends in the past. But they hadn't lasted long. I was afraid they would have somehow found out about my past self. Because, once upon a time, nobody would've even dared think of me as an attractive, promiscuous, alluring, single female.
But now that I had the glow-up of the century, dyed my hair blonde, I had quite a lot of admirers. It only really started to occur when NASA began sponsoring the project, bringing more traction.
My phone started ringing, but I paid no heed.
Jujubee, however, almost dropped her drink.
"Girl, why is Ed Sheeran calling you?" Jujubee raised a brow.
And as soon as the name met my ears, I was reminded of the night before. "Oh, God." I held my head in my hands.
"What did you do?" Jujubee was already groaning.
"I fucked up," I answered.
"You didn't have a quicky with him or something, right?" Jujubee questioned further.
I lifted my head, looking at her with squinted eyes. "What? No. Ew. Juju." I sipped my coffee before bearing the news. "OK, so...I don't know why I did it, maybe 'cause I'm a mess when I'm drunk, but I…" I lowered my tone, "kinda offered him the chance to be the first person to go into the other world."
"What?? I thought we were gonna do that!" Jujubee was freaking out.
"I know. I fucked up."
"Well, call him back."
"And, tell him what? 'Sorry, Ed. Jk'?"
Jujubee's forehead was in her hands, "I was really excited." She whined.
As I said before, this meant a lot to us. We hadn't discussed it with the team yet, but Jujubee and I had privately planned that we'd be first to enter the other world. So you could understand this was incredibly disappointing for her.
"OK. How about this? Ed will go in for 5 minutes. After that, we bring him back to Earth. And then we fly off by ourselves?" I suggested.
"I was looking forward to the pink sky. And the flying horses. And the…"
Jujubee went on a ramble as my phone began to ring again. I picked it up, letting it ring for a few seconds before declining Ed Sheeran's call.
I checked if there were any texts from him. Nada. But there was one message that caught my attention. The memory of reading it the previous night came flooding back.
Jujubee was still rambling, but I put my phone down and leaned across the table slightly. "Juju, do you remember Blair St Clair?"
Jujubee's expression changed instantaneously. "Girl, of course, I do. You were in love with her for years."
"Oh my God, can you whisper, please?" I questioned, the desperation in my voice very much apparent.
"Brianna, she's back in Ohio. We're in New York. I don't think anyone's gonna go and tell."
"You never know," I briefly looked behind me for fear that somehow the world decided to shit on my luck and make her appear in the booth behind me.
"Girl, chill out. And yes, I do remember her." Jujubee replied, "you know something that always stuck with me? Please don't ask why, but I'll never forget the day you told me you were in love with her. You came out to me that day too."
-_-_-_-
1995
"Juju, I gotta tell you something," I said, throwing my doll to the side of the fort. If I didn't tell her the truth now, I never would.
"What is it?" Jujubee sounded scared.
I crossed my legs in a pretzel shape, straightened my back and declared, "Juju, I like girls. And Blair St Clair is the girl I'm in love with."
I was expecting amazement, awe, shock. But Jujubee just seemed confused.
"What? How is that possible?" She asked.
"You promise you can keep a secret?" I offered my pinky.
Jujubee joined hers with mine. "Of course I can."
"OK." Our fingers remained twisted around each other. "Well, I saw two ladies in the mall kissing. And my Mommy told me girls can like girls. And I had an a-piffa-tree. The reason I like Blair so much is because I'm in love with her!"
"Brie-Brie, you need to slow down." Jujubee put her hand up. "If girls can like girls, then how come we never see girls kissing girls? It's always boys and girls."
"I don't know."
"Have you ever kissed a girl?"
"Nope."
"Then, how are you sure?"
"I don't know. You ever get that weird feeling inside that tells you that you're right? I can feel it. I know I'm not lying."
"Wooow." Jujubee looked away briefly. "Does that mean you like me?"
"I don't know. You're my friend, Juju." I shrugged. "I mean, maybe we should kiss just to figure it out."
Juju looked like she was contemplating this for a moment before nodding her head and sitting up. "OK!"
I didn't even hesitate. Instead, I moved closer and gave her a quick kiss on the lips.
"Ew!" We both pulled away.
We both agreed to never do that again, nor ever speak of it.
As if nothing had happened, we continued on playing with our dolls for another hour before the rain came out.
I walked Jujubee home, feeling very much like 'the big girl' being all responsible.
And in walking back to my own place, wrapping my arms around myself, I saw Blair - walking alone, drenched from head to toe.
"Blair!" I ran towards her.
She turned to look at me, her face scrunched up, trying to see through the downpour.
Call it instinct, but I knew something was up, just from how she was looking at me. I put my hands on her shoulders. "What's wrong?? Are you OK?"
"I'm lost. I-I'm trying to find my way home." She said quietly.
"What. How did you - -" I stopped myself from talking any further. Instead, I took Blair by the hand and pulled her towards the bus shelter off to the side of the road.
We both sat down when we got inside. She was shaking, close to catching a cold in the awful weather. Not to mention she had no jacket on. So I pulled my arm out of its sleeve and draped half of the coat over her.
"What happened to your coat?" I asked
"I didn't bring it." She replied.
"Why not? It's cold. You're going to get sick."
"I'm sorry. I just...ran."
I was silent for a moment. Then, "What do you mean?"
She was also silent for a moment, her blue eyes drifting to the ground. "Brianna...is it normal for Daddies to shout real loud all the time? Do they smash things a lot?"
No. It was not expected. I may not have had a Father figure in my life, but I knew well enough. "Blair, what happened?"
Blair clenched her fist around the jacket. "My Daddy...he…"
Despite her timid voice trailing off, I understood. She didn't even need to say it. "Do you have somewhere to go?"
She lifted her eyes to me, "I need to get home. I just ran as fast as I could. And somehow ended up here. I don't know my way back."
"I don't think you should go back," I admitted.
"I have to. Or he'll be even more mad."
I was wracking my brain. There was no way I could let her go back. "OK. Is there somewhere you can stay for a while? Somewhere close?"
"No." Blair shook her head. "Wait. Yeah. My Granny lives somewhere around here." She looked at me with optimism in her eyes.
"That's great! I know this place like the back of my hand. I bet I can find it in a few seconds."
After sitting for 10 more minutes, the rain was starting to settle, so Blair gave me the address, and off we went. I carried her bag for her. She was probably exhausted from all the walking.
All the while, I just listened as she talked about many things - Madonna, her Princess Belle doll, how Jade from school actually picked her nose when no one was looking. So many different topics. And I didn't speak a word. I guess I was just so...astonished. Here I was, walking along in a light rainstorm, hanging out with the prettiest girl in my class. How was this possible? Was this real life?
"You've been really quiet." Blair pointed out.
"Yeah, I just can't believe you're talking to me. What the fuck?" Yes, I said that.
Blair laughed at my potty mouth. "Yeah, why wouldn't I?"
I shrugged. "Well, I don't know. Maybe 'cause no one likes me."
Blair stopped in her tracks for a moment. "I like you."
I stopped, spun around, and looked at her with wide eyes. There was no way I heard her say those words. No fucking way.
"Come on. I know where we are now. Granny's house is around the corner." Blair began to move again.
But the butterflies in my stomach were going wild. I felt warm and wanted to just hug her. But I also didn't want to alarm her. Baby steps, Brianna.
I walked Blair to the house. Her Granny came to the door and was obviously quite confused. And Blair began to cry again.
I wanted to turn and run, feeling very out of place. But Blair grabbed me before I could leave and pulled me into a hug. She pressed her tear-stained face against my shoulder and whispered, "Thank you, Brie."
"I gotta go."
I pulled out of the hug and ran as fast I could. I don't know if I left her standing there confused or if she just knew by then it was just a me thing to be awkward.
But my mind was racing; Blair liked me. I knew not in the same way as I liked her. But, surely, that meant we could be friends.
Oh, how naive I was.
A few weeks later, it was the beginning of Summer. Mom took me to the park, and there was Blair with her friends.
I ran across the grass to the picnic blanket they were all sitting at.
"Blair!" I called excitedly. I practically threw myself down next to her, giving her a tight hug.
"Ew." Jade laughed.
"Shut up, Jade." Blair snapped.
"Are you friends with the freak now or something?" Carmen questioned, inching away from me.
"I'm not a freak!" I shouted.
"Uh, yeah, you are," Serena added. "We don't want freaks in our friend group. Go on. Get lost."
"Girls - -" Blair tried.
"You wanna join her?" Jade pointed her gaze at Blair, her face scrunched up in disgust.
I was waiting for it; The big 'fuck you' as Blair stood up, took my hand and walked away.
But she remained seated. Her eyes trailed down to the ground. I tried shaking her shoulder.
"Blair?" I spoke quietly.
She didn't say a word. It was as if she had turned to stone.
My body felt cold.
"See? She doesn't like ugly people like you. No one does." Jade smirked.
I remember the moment being more intense than it actually was. Because in a matter of seconds, the girls were screaming as I began to punch Jade in her bitchy face. I couldn't punch for shit. But if it left a bruise, I was happy.
"Brianna!" I heard my Mom's voice. Her dark arms wrapped around me, pulling me away from the now crying Jade. "We are going home right now." Mom threatened. But I didn't care.
From being dragged away from the fight scene all the way until we got home, I screamed.
Mom screamed back for a while when we were in the car. But you can't fight fire with fire. So she stopped when we pulled up.
I got in, I beat the fuck out of every object that came into my line of vision. And my shouting never stopped.
"No one wants you, ugly freak!" I smashed a vase. "Worthless piece of trash!"
Mom had been chasing me all over the house, trying to calm me down. But this wasn't like any tantrum I had ever had, and as Mom had no idea what was actually going on, she had no idea what to do.
She eventually scooped me up in her arms and held me tight as she sat on the ground. I screamed as I tried to fight off her grasp, downing out all her hushed whispers. "I got you, Baby. I got you. Mommy's here."
My screams did go on for another while, but as soon as they ended, all I could say to Mom was, "I should give up. Blair will never be my friend. I'm too ugly."
Mom stood me up, so she knew I was looking directly into her eyes. She pointed a finger in my face and spoke with a cracked but stern tone. "Don't say that. Never ever say that. You are so beautiful, and no one has the right to tell you that you're not. I want you to go look in the mirror, really, really look at yourself, Brianna. And I want you to see how pretty you are. Look at your hair, your brown eyes, your freckles. You are just as pretty as everyone else, girl. You are not ugly."
I squeezed my fists, feeling the hard lump in my throat. "Then why did my Mommy and Daddy give me away?"
Mom was stunned for a moment. She took my hand. "Baby, that had nothing to do with how you look. They…" she paused, trying to find the right words to use, "they just…" another pause, "look, I'll tell you when you're older. But I promise you are not ugly."
I couldn't hold on anymore. I let out a pained cry and immediately threw myself into her arms and buried my face in her shoulder.
-_-_-_-
2020
That was my first major emotional breakdown, marking the beginning of many more to come. But, unfortunately, Mom didn't want to immediately get me help. She had a feeling it would upset me further. And she was right.
Just as I had begun middle school, I had another huge episode. That was it. There had been too many episodes throughout those years.
You can try covering a crack in the wall with a pretty picture, but the problem would never go away, would it?
I couldn't stand therapy. Why was I the one to work on my emotions when I only felt the way I did because kids were assholes? Where were all the breathing exercises and meditation sessions to make them not be dicks?
But as much as I hated it, the older I got, I opened my eyes. What I hated the most was seeing the pain I was putting Mom through. So I really tried hard not to freak out.
I didn't want to upset Mom anymore. She really did her best. And to this day, I wouldn't change her for the world.
"We're here."
I was brought out of my thoughts as the cab pulled over. I had been so gone, just sitting in the backseat, staring at the magenta glass vase in my hands.
"Keep the change," I replied, handing the driver the money and thanking him as I got out.
He took my suitcase from the trunk and left it by my side. And with a goodbye, he drove off.
Standing at the bottom of the lawn, I looked at the house. Fuck, once upon a time, I wouldn't have been so in love with its appearance. I had no idea what my Mom was going for with the multiple colours. The outside was painted pastel yellow with a sky blue door and pink frame. Then there were the various flowerpots stuck onto the wall next to the door. All different colours; pink, green, orange or blue.
OK, I lied; as a kid, I fucking loved our house. Everyone else's was boring. But when high school rolled around, people would whisper how I was "the weird hippie chick from the rainbow crack house". So, you can understand why it quickly became an eyesore for me.
I knocked on the front door, feeling the excitement bubble within me. I had been so busy with the project, it was a few months since I last saw her in person. I glanced at the vase in my hand, the perfect Birthday gift. It was perfect because I got her a new one every year. Because I never got over the guilt from smashing her favourite vase as a child. This act was to make a point - to show that no matter how much I apologised, I was always sorry, and would always be.
I knocked again. There was only a barking behind the door. Good to know someone was in.
I still had my own key. No point in standing outside all day. I made my own way in, knowing I could just surprise her later.
"Hi, baby!" I spoke in a hushed tone as Piggie started to jump around excitedly. Fuck, I missed him so much.
I closed the door and knelt down next to the pug, bringing him into a hug and kissing him on the head. "You good boy," I said in between kisses, "Let's get you some food."
Standing back up, I made my way to the kitchen, and Piggie was only happy to follow. I still remembered where his food was kept, so I poured him a bowl. Then, while he was distracted, I took my suitcase up the stairs and into my old bedroom.
Fuck, there was always something so surreal about walking into it. I hadn't lived at home since before I went to college. From that moment on, Jujubee and I always had our own places. And now, I had my apartment in New York.
Meaning, the last time I had redecorated was years before my glow up (in personality and looks). The walls were pink, I remember them being a pretty pastel tone, but they looked duller now. Above my bed, the wall was littered with posters, writing and photos. I made eye contact with Reese Witherspoon on the Legally Blonde poster, remembering how I always wanted to be like her. Funny how I kind of did achieve that.
I realised I was just standing in the doorway, just staring. So, I sat the suitcase against my desk and went to lie down. I smirked as I found all 5'5" of my whole being still fit into it.
I took out my phone and snapped a picture of myself to Jujubee, the caption reading 'Hey, babe, my parents are out? 😉😉 come over?'.
While waiting for her reply, I changed my pencil skirt and blouse, choosing to wear leggings and a tank instead. Suddenly, I felt 10 years younger.
An hour passed, and Mom was still nowhere to be seen.
"Maybe she's at work. Does she have a job?" Jujubee asked me through the phone.
"I... don't know, Juju," I murmured, my attention not really on the question but on the contents of the fridge.
There was a punnet of strawberries. I helped myself to a few.
"When was the last time you spoke to her? Seriously, Brie, I'm getting so nervous." Jujubee sounded concerned. I knew her mind was thinking of the worst. And oddly enough, I found it to be entertaining.
"A few months back, actually," I smirked. "She's been real quiet, to be honest." Piggie was at my feet, looking for one of the juicy strawberries. I shook my head at him.
"Oh God, no. Did you check every room? Talk to the neighbours?"
"Oh, fuck! Juju. My God, there's a head in the fridge!" I feigned terror.
"Brianna!"
"Relax. I'm fucking with you. I spoke to her last night." I took one more strawberry. Biting into it, the juice dripped down my fingers and onto the ground. Piggie was beyond happy now, licking it up. I let him be and made my way out of the kitchen.
"That's not funny, Brianna. Don't joke about that. I thought she was missing or...worse."
"Fair enough. Sorry, girl. Anyway, how's work today?" I walked into the living room and sat on the couch.
"Good, good. Ed Sheeran's team finally got in touch," Jujubee said with a hint of disdain.
I held my forehead in one hand, wanting to punch myself for even speaking to him the week before.
I groaned, "See, this is why I should stop drinking."
"Well, to be fair, you don't drink as much as you did back in college. But when you do, you go hard."
Jujubee continued talking, lecturing me about my life choices when I moved my foot and felt it touch something under the couch. It startled me at first, but I pulled out the item.
A slipper. Grandpa's slipper. Sitting back on the couch again, letting my eyes just stare at it. "Hey, Juju. I'm gonna go."
There was a sigh on the other end. "Fine. Not like I was talking about anything important or whatever."
"Sorry," I said quietly.
"Don't worry. I still love you, whore." She said.
"Of course you do."
I made a nasty kissing sound through the phone. She was grossed out, of course, and hung up. I chuckled for a moment and put my phone away.
Piggie came into the room and jumped up on the sofa next to me. I began to pet him, my eyes now back on the shoe.
Grandpa wore his slippers more than he wore regular shoes. Every time he found out Mom had put them in the wash, he would be furious. I would always listen to him ranting and wonder why men were gross. But I'd also laugh at how he threw his hands up in the air in frustration.
There was one time, in particular. He had gotten mad for the same reason. He huffed and came into the living room, sitting down on the couch, in the very seat I currently was sitting. He was shaking his head, just looking at the TV.
I shuffled closer to him and offered a few potato chips. His frown was immediately reversed. His smile had never seemed brighter. He took a few chips and asked with a full mouth, "Hey, kiddo. Aren't you late for school?"
It was 2PM. On a Saturday.
My smile was beginning to fade, my eyes still focused on the slipper. I could feel it - a familiar twisting feeling from somewhere within my stomach, the oxygen in my lungs seeming to fail me, a tremble taking my hands over.
And then, Piggie licking my arm.
I flinched slightly as I was brought back to the present. I smiled, petting Piggie. "Where would I be without you, baby?"
Piggie didn't answer, of course. Instead, he just licked my hand, which was enough for me to chill out.
I put Grandpa's shoe back under the couch, now inspired to search more of the house. But before I got off the couch, I checked my phone. Jujubee had Snapchatted me.
Clicking into it, I froze for a moment. She was in her bathroom, the shower running behind her. I wanted to say she was the main element to the picture, cocking her head to the side, pouting her lips and raising a brow. Despite the fact Jujubee never sent me pictures like this, it wasn't the first time I had seen her in her lingerie, though. But, I couldn't help but glance at her black lacey bra. The breath was caught in my throat for a moment.
The text read, 'You OK, babe?'
Around middle school, Jujubee developed this 6th sense, knowing when something was up with me. It was impressive.
I lifted my phone up high, took a picture and made sure to get Piggie in the frame. He wasn't looking, however.
"Piggie." He was looking now. I smiled and took the picture. I captioned it, 'Just hanging out with this one'.
I hit send. And now filled with inspiration to go on a nostalgia trip, I got up from the sofa and went off to explore. I called Piggie to follow.
I found myself upstairs, standing in the doorway of Mom's room. It felt rude to intrude. After all, a bedroom wasn't just a bedroom. It was a sanctuary, a place to be yourself, to carry out your own private rituals free from judgement, a happy place. So it felt like an intrusion to invade her space.
But I spotted the perfume bottles on her dresser. There was one bottle, in particular, a fragrance she always bought. It was her favourite - a musky scent with a hint of amber vanilla.
I couldn't resist. I made my way to the dresser, lifted the bottle and smelt the underside of the lid. Immediately, I felt my body relax. It smelled just like her. And there was no smell sweeter than the smell of your own Mother. It felt safe, loving, warm. Now, I was even more excited to see her again.
That was as far as I'd go into her room. So I put the perfume back, ushered Piggie to get down from her bed and left.
I was back in my old bedroom. I wanted this nostalgia trip to be unlike any other. So I knew exactly where I'd find it. I looked in the drawers of my desk. And in the very bottom drawer, I found it; my old diary.
"This is going to be wild, Piggie. I just know it." I smirked, sitting down on my bed, my back against the headboard. Piggie curled up beside me. We were both sitting comfortably. So I began.
'Dear Dairy'
Already, I had to pause and laugh. 7 year old me would have been a legend in a spelling bee.
'Today, I had a fight with Jujubee. She really upset me, but I upset her too. I should say sorry. That's all. Bye.'
Short and sweet, child me didn't beat around the bush. She just gave you the information you needed. That was it.
I flicked a few pages forward.
'Dear Diary,
I had another fight with Jujubee. I really don't want to upset her. But sometimes I get so angry, I don't know what to do. I lost a tooth today too. So I am going to leave a note to the tooth fairy. I want her to take all my anger from me instead of my tooth. I hope it works.'
I remembered that. I had gotten mad because we were playing house. I wanted Jujubee to be both the parents, and I'd be the two kids. She didn't want to. She wanted to play the part of a child too. I freaked out, of course. I specifically remembered telling her she'd do it if she cared about me. She said she did care. But in the heat of the moment, I didn't believe her.
"God, I was such a brat," I spoke quietly.
I skipped some pages, unsure of what I was to find. And seeing one specific name, I stopped flicking through.
'Dear Blair,
You are like the sunshine. You are…'
I stopped reading, cringing at my child self. Was this before I realised it was a crush or not? What was hilarious about this entry was how damn long it was. All other accounts were short and straight to the point. But this? It went on for 3 pages. I bet my younger self felt mega proud about writing so much. But now, I felt the need to build a fucking time machine, go back to that moment and tell little Brianna, "Guess what? Nothing happens. Blair never becomes your friend. She never feels the same way about you the way you feel about her, so stop before you make it worse for yourself!"
I decided I was taking this diary back to New York. I needed to investigate it more. And there were probably some accounts that Jujubee would cackle laughing at.
My nostalgia trip wasn't at its peak just yet. I needed something that would just send me over the edge of happiness. And I knew I'd probably find that in my memory box. But there was a problem. I had given it to my Mom, asking her to hide it away somewhere. And whenever I wanted to put something into it, I'd give it to her, and she'd hide it for me.
And I made her promise to only give it back to me when I turned 50. No matter how much I cried and begged, she could not break that promise. Young me knew one day I'd be on a one way trip down memory lane.
I was so tempted to find the box. Surely, it couldn't have been too hard to find. But Piggie growled for a moment, his ears perking up. He looked at the window and started barking. I was now aware of the sound of a car's engine. A familiar one at that.
Finally, Mom was home.
I peaked out the window to see she was grabbing her bag from the car.
Piggie and I raced down the stairs, taking the vase from the living room and waiting excitedly at the door.
Funny how with excitement there came a level of anxiety, the tiniest hint of fear bubbling in your stomach. And I felt it all as soon as I heard the jiggling of the key.
The door opened slowly as if she already knew something was unusual about the place like she was bracing herself for whatever she was going to find.
She peeked around the door. My smile was beaming.
"Happy Birthday!" I shouted.
"Jesus Christ!" Mom flinched, almost falling back and stamping on the ground. Piggie was going wild now, barking from all the excitement. "Brianna, you could have given me a heart attack!" She shut the door and clasped a hand to her chest.
I laughed at her over-the-top reaction and held out the vase. "I got you another one."
Mom looked at me, still panting from her shock. She was silent for a moment, and in that silence, I realised how much I had missed her.
Mom stepped forward, took the vase and put it to the side. As she pulled me into a tight hug, I could see her face scrunching up.
There are two people of people; those who can't stand seeing their Moms cry. And fucking liars.
Of course, I belonged to the first group. As you know, I…
Well, you already know. Here, let me put in a fun diagram of things I didn't want to deal with at that moment.
"Don't ever scare me like that again, you bitch." Mom spoke softly in my ear as she cried.
"I couldn't help myself." I forced a smile.
As much as I hated seeing her cry, I knew she needed it. Me being the only child she ever had, it broke her heart when I moved out in the first place. I'd imagine it was tough now that she was alone.
Yeah, she had Piggie. But it obviously wasn't enough. So I let her cry it out as she hugged me. I could smell the perfume, and again, I felt that safety, the security a Mother's love brings.
When she pulled away, she immediately moved to the kitchen, already brewing some tea. I let her know that I didn't mind if she had to go upstairs and change or anything. But she insisted we get into the catch-up.
"I invited some people from work to come over later. You remember the flower shop beside the old church?" Mom rambled, her shaking hands pouring the tea into two mugs.
"Of course I do," I answered, sitting at the table, with Piggie in my lap.
"Yeah, I work there now." Mom replied.
I felt bad. This shouldn't have been news. It was my part to already know that.
Mom sat at the table, placing the mugs down too. Piggie's attention was drawn to them, licking his lips with thirst.
"So I hope you're not jet-lagged, girl." The excitement was practically radiating from her face.
I was a bit exhausted, but she deserved to have a great night. "I'm good. Don't worry."
"Oh, and your aunt is coming." She added, sipping her tea.
"Aunt Monét! Yes, bitch."
It had been a very, very long time since I last saw Monét. She knew how to turn a party. And she was always so glamorous. I remember numerous times as a child asking her to teach me her ways, be my mentor, so I could grow up to look as good as she did.
"So, it's gonna be a long night. Be prepared." Mom said.
"So, it's a party?"
"Not my plan, but knowing Monét, that's how it will turn out. Anyway, I saw pictures from the event last week. You looked great up on that stage, baby. Keep doing me proud."
I gave her a gracious smile as I sipped my tea. A small drop fell onto my lap. Piggie was searching for it, but it had already soaked in. Sorry, Piggie.
"Yeah, I kinda fucked up, though," I said, playing with one of the dog's ears.
"'Fuck’ always has been your favourite word," Mom shook her head, "Go ahead. Tell me, what did you do?"
"So at the after-party, I kinda offered Ed Sheeran to be the first person to go through. Please don't ask me why. The answer is; I was drunk. I don't have a more logical explanation for you right now."
Mom was silent for a moment, her eyes narrowing. "Ed Sheeran? Why him?"
"I told you, I have no idea." I sipped my tea. "I'm just a fucking idiot when I'm drunk."
"So, what now? Is he actually going to do it?"
"Yep. His team got in contact. Everything is set in stone." I was ashamed of the whole Ed Sheeran thing, but now telling this to my Mother, it felt all the more embarrassing.
"Oh, God. This is going in history books, girl." Mom held her forehead in her hand.
"I know," I reciprocated. "Even worse, now they're asking the big questions like 'is the atmosphere safe on the other side?' We're still in the middle of working all that out."
"OK, asides from the Ed Sheeran fuck up," Mom put her hand on mine, "I am extremely proud of how far you've come since you were just a kid."
Uh oh. This wasn't what I wanted.
"And I know you're so busy with this whole thing, but sometimes, I just wish you'd call."
Fuck. "I'm sorry."
"Oh, no. I don't wanna make you feel bad, girl. Like I said, you're a busy lady." She held a hand up.
But still, I felt bad.
"Shit. I was supposed to pick up some lemonade on the way home." Mom stood up, taking her tea with her. She had barely touched it.
"I could go to the store if you want," I suggested, taking a big gulp of tea.
"I mean, if you wanna, go for it. Tina still works there. It would be nice to see her again." Mom continued. She reached in her pocket.
I kissed Piggie on the head before putting him on the ground. "It's OK. I got it." I stood up from the table.
We had a bit of back and forth about who paid. I left before she could even give me her spare change.
Before I walked out the door, Piggie looked sad to see me go. Of course, I was coming back, but he didn't know that. Therefore I felt guilty.
I put my sunglasses on as I walked out the door. It wasn't even sunny out, but I knew I'd probably get stopped by people I used to know to dive deep into conversations about how far I had come. I had things on my mind, so many thoughts circling in my head.
I knew I should have put more effort into staying in contact with Mom. But after years of putting her through hell, I felt a sense of guilt. There were a few times I'd message, and somehow the conversation would take a turn, and she'd bring up a childhood memory.
I was done with my past. I was once a troubled child who eventually grew up to have a better mindset. I didn't want to relay the breakdowns, all of the vases I had smashed.
Then I realised how much of a contradiction that all was as I realised it was all that was on my mind as I walked down the street. So I plugged in my earbuds and drowned out the thoughts with whatever Spotify had to offer.

Minty
Ewan wasn't allergic to peppermint essential oil. It just made his nose tickle and thus inspired a fair bit of sneezing. His mother had thought it was funny, and Adair had teased him for it. There were nuances to it, he had learned through the years. He didn't have a reaction when it was applied to his skin, and after a couple of minutes he generally seemed to get used to it. But if someone else in the room was wearing it and walked by him, he was going to sneeze. Especially if they kept moving and then returned later. He had to have time to adjust to the scent.
He didn't always make that connection, however. Sometimes someone would walk by him seven or eight times, he would sneeze every time, and never notice the Christmas time smell following them.
This was very difficult for him to accept when he first met Avanda.
It had been a long day on the base, perhaps two weeks after her return, and he had been on high alert. Her crew was slowly coming to terms with the Renegade cause, and she had been doing what she could to help his brother get a hold of more advanced supplies for the base hospital. Ewan had been standing nearby running security and helping her with one of the computers. After he'd turned away to sneeze for possibly the seventeenth time, she spun around in her chair, arms crossed and glaring at him.
"Go home, MacClyde. I'm on a Renegade controlled base, and I doubt anything bad is going to happen to me for ten minutes while I finish this up."
"But--"
"Besides, Adair's here and Castor can fill in for your 'watchdog' duties." When Ewan opened his mouth to complain again, she kept talking, hurrying to shut him down. "You're clearly getting sick. All that's going to do is slow you down. Go upstairs and get some rest, and I'll see what I can do for you when I get done here."
Begrudgingly, Ewan did as he was told. It had been too long since he'd slept. He would never admit it to anyone, but he could see the sense in what Cas, Addie, and Avanda had all told him about overworking himself. Sort of. He flopped down onto the couch and was asleep almost instantly.
When he woke up, Adair was in the kitchen, quietly making dinner.
"Where's Alistairion?" Ewan asked, glancing around the apartment.
"Downstairs. Don't worry, Cas is keeping an eye on her, and he's gonna give her a ride home. She said she hopes you feel better." Ewan did not miss the small smirk growing on his twin's face.
"I'm not sick. I just couldn't stop sneezing." Ewan snapped.
Adair let out a small bark of laughter. "Of course you couldn't! Ohhh it all makes sense now."
"What?"
Adair set down the wooden spoon he'd been using and shot his brother a look. "She was wearing peppermint oil."
"What? No I would have noticed-" Ewan cut himself off quickly, aware that his comment would only open up room for his brother to tease him about the crush that he was very much in denial of.
"Of course. Yet here you are, an hour later, with no sniffles, no sneezes, and seeming quite alert after what I can only assume was a good nap."
Ewan's scowl deepened and he grabbed an apron. "What does it even do? Is it just a perfume? Or does it...do something?"
Adair shrugged, passing Ewan the spoon. "Kind of a lot, actually. Usually it's used for it's calming effect, but it's also used for mild pain treatments. I also read an article about it being linked to-" Adair stopped with a sigh, catching himself just before the ramble got too out of control and he strayed from the topic. "I'm willing to bet that she uses it to help regulate headaches."
"Headaches?" Ewan asked carefully.
"Yeah. Mum used it for a lot of things, but headaches more than anything. Hamish says it works wonders for them."
Ewan shrugged a little and decided to pretend that he didn't care about the matter anymore.
A few weeks later, Ewan and Avanda were on a mission together. It was a simple scouting mission, but it was like a stakeout scene in a buddy cop movie. They sat together in the car in relative silence for about an hour, watching the area intently.
Ewan shot a glance at the redhead and frowned. "You alright? You've been a little off today."
Avanda grunted, not moving her head from where it was resting against the window. "Migraine."
"Oh. I'm sorry. Do you have any meds with you?"
"No."
"Ah." He shifted a little, digging in his pockets until he felt the small bottle. "Here. Addie says this helps some people?" He offered it to her and she reached over, taking it.
"Yeah, actually it does. Thanks, Ewan."
"No prob-no-no problem." He stuttered then cleared his throat. That may have been the first time she'd used his first name without Adair around. Usually it was 'MacClyde,' unless his twin was around to cause any confusion. He clenched his jaw as the car filled with the minty fresh aroma, trying to fight back the sneeze.
"Thanks." She handed it back to him and he nodded, not trusting himself not to sneeze if he opened his mouth.
There was only so long that he could fight it however. When he did sneeze, he ended up hitting his head on the steering wheel.
"Bless you." Ewan didn't miss her small laugh, which only made him blush harder.
"Tha-thank- ACHOOO- thank you."

Complainers (A MHA fanfic)
Midorya x Fem! Reader
(A/N : So this is my first fanfic EVER and I've really been into MHA for a while now and I LOVED reading all the fanfics, and I saw this particular ask to a blog if the reader had a writing quirk and how would Midorya and two other characters would react (I am so sorry I forgot the blog who wrote that) but I wanted to put my spin on it and make the reader be into slam poetry and let their tongue be their weapon. This particular poem is by Rudy Fransisco!! Not my original poem!! Hope y'all enjoy!)
youtube
When you write, it's like the whole world around you finally goes silent. You live out the daydreams in your own head feeling the words on the page a safe space. This was your quirk. Even if it didn't seem as great to be in combat fighting villains, at least it's something to fight your inner demons. That to you was enough.
Midorya was well use to the song and dance of getting you to snap out of your world when the bell rings, apologizing in advance. In truth he hates breaking your concentration, he knows full well that he hates the feeling being separated from writing his notes. But he knew you would sit there for hours on end just writing in your book, even if you finish it all in one go you wouldn't notice that you were writing on the desk. (And yes he had to get you out of there and insisted to clean it up for you). Even after all of this he still admired your quirk no less.
The bell had rung for lunch and everyone stood up and packed their books away and walked out one by one. You feel a tap on your shoulder not a minute later, and a familiar soft spoken voice breaks you from your concentration. " Hey, Y/N, I-Its time for lunch" He says with a smile and you close your book and packed it into your bag, walking with him side by side to the lunchroom.
"So what was today's story in your book?" He asked with a smile looking to you.
"Not a story today, I've been into poetry for a while. So I figured I might try something different. " You say smiling back.
"Woah, I didn't know you were into poetry. That seems really cool! What was it about? "
You were always so surprised that he was interested in your work. Since it was such a personal thing to you and you haven't really shown off your work due to self consciousness, he was always very supportive even from the beginning. Later on you realized that he also loved writing. That was one of the many things that formed a great friendship between you both, besides from your love of heroes and nerding out with each other of course!. You both carried out your conversation while getting your lunches. Sitting down on the table along with everyone else smiling and joking you all causally eat your meals. You pull out your notebook, sliding it over to Midorya to take a look after you promised him too. He smiles and opens to the bookmarked paged, but a soon as he does a hand flashes and snatches the book out of his hands.
"Please tell me you don't think your sorry excuse of a quirk would get you into the top ten!" Bakugou loudly exclaiming with a smug look.
Well shit.
While he was chuckling you were about to stand and get it back, but Midorya beat you to it trying to pry it off of his hands, but Bakugou only lifts it up higher. "What's your deal nerd? Trying to stick up for your little girlfriend?" He says chuckling louder.
"S-she's not my girlfriend kachan! Give back her book! It's not yours!" Midorya says with a blush forming on his face. But Bakugou shoves him away and faces you.
"What makes you think that writing fairytale lands and princesses would make you pro hero? That's not going to save you from the real world. What's going to happen if a villain comes in and starts destroying everything around you? You're gonna write him a love story with a happily ever after!? Give me a break! " He says with a laugh.
"Kachan! You need to stop this" Midorya says stepping back up to him. "Not everyone's quirk is perfect!"
"Heh! If you really think she could handle the world on her own-" He says before holding out the book "Let's give her a chance to prove me wrong! "
And just like that, your notebook, your work your safe haven was blown up to flames. Bits of burnt paper flown into the air, your book quickly into ashes. You didn't notice midorya quickly moving to get his water and put the fire out, your eyes was fixated on Bakugou. A smirk had formed on his face that made your heart sink into your stomach. A lump forming within your chest as you fought the urge to cry. He moved his arms and raised his eyebrows, waiting for you to make the next move. But you felt a hand around your arm.
"Y/N, you don't need this now. Let's just go-"
"No... " You say stepping up to Bakugou. Taking one last look at your destroyed book you turn your head back to him. "It's a shame, because the poem I was just writing... Was about you. " You say with a sad smile and a nod. He blinks back in surprise, his smirk growing larger than before. "That's not a good thing.. " You later say. Even though it was still in the works, even if you didnt get to finish it you felt your tongue burn. An unfamiliar sensation forming in your mouth. Usually you would feel it within your hand as you write, a soft glow transferring onto the words you'd write on the page. But now that feeling had made it's way from your throat and to your mouth.
And it's telling you to speak the fuck up.
You took a breath, looked him deep in the eye and let your mouth took the wheel.
"The following are true stories.
May 26th 2003 Aron Ralston was hiking, a boulder fell on his right hand. He waited four days, then amputated his arm with a pocket knife.
On New Year’s Eve, a woman was bungee jumping in Zimbabwe. The cord broke, she then fell into a river and had to swim back to land in crocodile infested waters with a broken collarbone.
Claire Champlin was smashed in the face by a five pound watermelon being propelled by a slingshot.
Matthew Brobst was hit by a javelin.
David Striegl was punched in the mouth. By a kangaroo.
The most amazing part about these stories is when asked about the experience they all smiled, shrugged, and said “I guess things could have been worse.”
So go ahead.
Tell me that you’re having a bad day.
Tell me about the traffic. Tell me about your boss. Tell me about the job you’ve been trying to quit for the past four years. Tell me the morning is just a town house burning to the ground and the snooze button is a fire extinguisher. Tell me the alarm clock stole the keys to your smile, drove it into 7:00 AM, and the crash totaled your happiness.
Tell me! Tell me!
Tell me, how blessed are we to have tragedies so small it can fit on the tips of our tongues?
You see, when Evan lost his legs he was speechless. When my cousin was assaulted, she didn’t speak for forty eight hours. When my uncle was murdered, we had to send out a search party to find my father’s voice.
Most people have no idea that tragedy and silence have the exact same address!
When your day is a museum of disappointments hanging from events that were outside of your control, when you find yourself flailing in an ocean of “Why is this happening to me?”, when it feels like your guardian angel put in his two week notice two months ago and just decided not to tell you, when it feels like God is just a babysitter that’s always on the phone, when you get punched in the esophagus by a fistful of life, remember that every year two million people die of dehydration so it doesn’t matter if the glass is half full or half empty, there’s water in the cup.
Drink it, and stop FUCKING complaining.
Muscle is created by repeatedly lifting things that have been designed to weigh us down. So when your shoulders feel heavy, stand up straight and lift your chin – call it exercise. When the world crumbles around you, you have to look at the wreckage and then build a new one out of the pieces that are still here.
Remember, you are still here.
The human heart beats approximately four thousand times per hour.
Each pulse, each throb, each palpitation is a trophy engraved with the words “You are still alive”...
You are still alive...
Act like it."
When you felt the sensation cool from your lips and the tip of your tongue, Bakugou's eyes were wide. His smirk had fallen. Silence filled around you, even from Midorya. Everyone has seen and heard the whole thing. Just as you were about to walk back to your table to grab your things and leave, you hear a slow clap. Then another. Then another. You turn your head to see everyone clapping and cheering. You smile a little. Bakugou steps back and walks off with a smack of his teeth.
"Tch, whatever weirdo.. " He mumbles under his breath.
You walked over to Midorya smiling and he quickly gives you a hug. "That was amazing! The way you kept firing words at kachan was incredible! I never seen him so speechless like that! " He pulls away with a smile and a blush.
"Oh hehe! It was nothing really" You say forming a blush yourself, looking away shyly.
"I'm really sorry about your notebook though. I could buy you another one and bring it to you tomorrow! "
"Oh no it's okay! I have extras at my house-"
"Nope! It's my treat." He smiles and the bell rings again, making everyone pack up and ready for the next class. Midorya grabs his bag and hands you yours. Making your way back into the building he stops you for a second. "Hey, speaking of treat, d-do you think we could both head out f-for some ice cream after school? " He says with a heavier blush and fiddles with his tie. He always did looked cute when he blushed. You smile and giggle a bit.
"I would love to.. "
(Woah hey! First fanfic done! Hope you all enjoyed that!! 🤣💕)

James & Ava
James: [okay so we all know the mood is that he sees whatever she's posted and literally goes there immediately with no thought of who else could also be cos he NEEDS to check that she's alright. The drama of it all] Ava: [but luckily no one is there and she'd be so shocked but also grateful 'cos no one wants to be alone and feeling unwell, esp. not in hospital] James: [when he'd have to say he was her brother so he can take her #awkward] Ava: [lollol finding that more amusing than you would otherwise 'cos concussion breaking your awks] James: [oh she'd be so cute I can't] Ava: [just hugging him so hard] James: [we all need that moment but sadly it cannot last forever because he'd have some driver doing circles endlessly cos there's nowhere to park at hospitals ever] Ava: [seriously, and it's so expensive] James: [when you were so desperate to get in there you didn't think about how long it could have taken like she could've been admitted and that driver is just lowkey out there for the rest of time] Ava: [lmao i wonder how long he'd wait for that bag before getting bored, luckily they'd low-key be ready to get rid 'cos too busy and overcrowded] James: [practically pushing her out the door as soon as they saw someone show up for her so he doesn't even have time to give her a feelsy speech lol] James: [just help her out to the car boy, you've had a lot of practice with drunk girls in heels and it'd be the same vibe] Ava: [just saying thank you over and over] James: [meanwhile he's asking her if she's okay over and over like every step they trying to take here] Ava: ['Oh God, you must think I'm so stupid, I swear, they came out of nowhere'] James: ['We both know you're not stupid, Ava' shout out to that text cleverness 5ever tbh 'I'm just glad you weren't seriously hurt'] Ava: ['How have you been, I've been so worried' shoutout to this concussion giving me shameless freedom lol] James: [when you can only shake your head because 1. you ain't been good 2. you don't wanna tell her any of it and 3. you don't think you deserve her worry/ want her to worry about you] Ava: [sad face] James: [stopping to stroke said face, don't fall over girl, he's got you] Ava: ['James-' and then just looking 'cos what can you say] James: [looking back at her cos likewise but then you gotta drop them eyes cos so sad] Ava: ['you look tired' and making more of an actual effort to get into this car] James: ['I am tired' but helping her in and doing her seatbelt for her because not gonna see her struggle ever, telling the driver her address because there's nowhere else you can take her but home even though you have no idea if as soon as you get there someone is gonna show up for her and you obviously don't want that] Ava: [patting your shoulder like 'you can come sleep' like no no one can babe] James: ['no' but a little smile cos she's cute af 'I'm supposed to keep you awake'] Ava: [when you make a face like 😏] James: ['by which, of course, I mean, you've got a 8 hour date with Edward Cullen ahead of you'] Ava: [grinning like a fool but then being like, wait 'you'll stay though, can you?'] James: ['I'm not going to leave you alone' oh the heavy unspoken implication that she might not be if the friends or fam descend 💔] Ava: [resting your head on him as a silent thank you but then lifting it like 'so awake, promise'[ James: [stroking her hair and keeping an eye like] Ava: [being like let me tell YOU a story and honestly God knows but it'd be cute and she'd be trying to match his storyteller energy] James: [when that's lowkey the moment he falls in love with her bye] Ava: [asking the driver to play the new moon soundtrack] James: [loling and honestly when was the last time he did that, we all know it was when they were together] Ava: [live the emo life and love it babes] James: [he's GOTTA dance in his seat to keep her awake, no other reason #notanerd lol] Ava: [just clapping and cheering him on like nothing to see here driver God bless] James: [so not what that man was expecting to 👀 or 👂] Ava: [freaking out drivers is low-key a fave] James: [the one time you're happy about London traffic tbh] Ava: [even though we ain't gonna interrupt, you don't know that boy] James: [speaking of, probably send a text or something to check on the kids because you just ran like assumedly they at their grandparents but] Ava: [never leaving 'em with Chlo we all know] James: [lord her and Jay would kill each other] Ava: [I'd genuinely be worried for her safety so don't blame you remotely boy, least her parents are invested] James: [literally though & you can have those grandparents forever babs we ain't taking them away from you] Ava: [awkward that your mum never shows but that's just that on that] James: [lbr that's for the best stick with your dads kiddos] Ava: [we all know it, even if Matty might not end up remembering much] James: [Ava lowkey her mum now oops] Ava: [and Jay's actual auntie...lol what a tangled web we weave boo] James: [at least they can all stay connected] Ava: [true facts] James: [makes my heart happy even if it's weird] Ava: [lean in to how weird this family is James] James: [they weird af but they're better than the one he's got #noshadetoTeddythough] Ava: [all the shade to you Chlo, sort it out] James: [her poor future children & husband] Ava: [honestly, good luck] James: [he'd have to be about everything she is or else what the fuck] James: [anyway we've been sidetracked get to Baze's house you two] Ava: [movie marathon awaits, what else do we vibe or shall we just try and see what comes out, like] James: [let's just run with it and see what happens because we extra and anything could be said and done tbh] James: [imagine how awkward it'd be when they get there because he'd have to send her in first and just be shitting himself in the car like is anyone there or no] Ava: [at least you know full well no one is there 'cos business trips forever so you're just at the door shaking your head and doing the 'come on' gesture] James: [he'd just help her to the sofa like immediately & get her blankets and pillows and painkillers (even though it wouldn't touch a concussion headache) and a phone charger and everything else she could possibly need cos Chloe's got him trained like a dog] Ava: [low-key pulling at him, gently, like boy sit down] James: [when you are then looking at her like what did I forget/ do wrong before you realise] Ava: [squeezing his hand because you can only say thank you so many times, putting the film on but then pausing and gasping so dramatically 'coffee, I promised you coffee' and going to get up like can you be careful please] James: [thinking she's in pain or something because of that gasp so being at her side like 0-1000 and slowing her down cos they can do it together thank you] Ava: [making a face at herself like ffs when she catches on 'I'm not trying to age you' and touching his non-grey hair and wrinkles like totally necessary yep] James: ['but you're offering me coffee, what's next red meat or red wine?' but no actual shade cos we both know he doesn't care and none of that is what's aging him anyway, taking her hand from his face and gently kissing said hand before handholding to lead her to her own kitchen like let's do this] Ava: ['I don't know where my cigarettes are' shrugs and smiles like sorry not sorry, smiles even harder but lowkey stops breathing when, kissing ontop of where he just kissed her hand, then getting to this all-singing all-dancing coffee machine 'you have to pick the most daring option, one you've never, ever tried before, okay?' and waggling her finger like so serious about this] James: [takes his own cigarettes out of his pocket and slides the pack over to her 'okay' and does pick, really concentrating on the decision even though there'd be so much shit he hasn't tried and we all know he could just pick option 1 and be done] Ava: [takes one out and puts it behind her ear for later 'cos no need to light up in your parents home, just watching him 'cos so cute and then nodding like yes, good choice and picks the same, setting up this machine 'cos they're always more confusing and/or time-consuming than they need to be I swear] James: [where's the lie you gotta have the knack I swear, his turn to watch her now though because she's beautiful doing anything ever and he missed her so bad] Ava: [ahh coffee goodtimes forever] James: [he needs it cos he is tired af so thanks Ava you babe] Ava: ['do we talk about what happened, or do we write it off?' when you just saying this casually whilst waiting for your coffees] James: ['I don't know' because he is genuinely torn between wanting to and also not] Ava: ['Wait and see how we feel' 'cos no rush or pressure here 'you better carry these though' 'cos we don't need burns as well ty] James: ['wait here a minute for me' because carries the drinks through and then comes back for her because why not carry her though as well obvs] Ava: [does and loves it 'I've missed you, you know'] James: ['I know now' just giving her 😍 casually 'I've missed you too'] Ava: [😍 right back 'Ask anyone' when you're talking about your mood but you realize that sounds like you been telling the world lol 'I mean, I've been a delight' 🙄] James: [when you shake your head like no it's okay 'I overreacted about your cousin, I'm sorry' takes a deep breath remembering that whole sad ending moment 'And I'm sorry for fucking up the start of your summer' because she loves it and he knows] Ava: ['I understand why, understood, whatever. And I am still sorry, I was just too excited and-' sighs like, you know, squeezing his hand again 'I promise, that's all sorted now though' 'cos clearly told her it's over by now, 'cos thought it was anyway; she nods like thanks but shrugs like it's okay too, don't worry 'Sure even I can't be grumpy in the Seychelles, like'] James: [blatantly almost kissing her because he understands the whole being too highkey thing because he was (*cough* is) too but doesn't because she's going away 'when are you going?'] Ava: [sad face like you didn't just say you aren't gonna be grumpy 'when my parents get back, couple of days'] James: [strokes her face again like he did earlier 'you'll feel better by then' because someone's meant to watch you for 48 hours actually NHS website says] Ava: [😈 me 😇 her looking at him 'how did you even- why- I-' continuously cutting herself off 'cos you know he was checking in on you now and you know he came without hesitating so it doesn't need to be said 'Oh, James'] James: ['Ava' saying her name with SO MUCH feeling that I cannot 'I had to' when you mean so many things by that like you had to go but you have to stay now and you had to make sure she was okay today but also you had to keep checking on her the whole time] Ava: [definitely gonna go in to kiss him can't stop that soz] James: [we all know it was only a matter of time and that this is gonna turn into a not at all casual make out session] Ava: [you honestly deserve it lads] James: [that coffee gonna be cold and they won't even notice] Ava: [the movies are also not being watched lmao but no one cares rn] James: [on pause forever sorry not sorry] James: [but eventually like after AN AGE one of them should lean on the remote or whatever so it starts playing and they're like wtf] Ava: [when you shit yourself like who is here but then loving 'cos hi Edward] James: [we all shitting ourselves and all loling] Ava: ['he's very possessive' no lie] James: [looking at Edward and then kissing her again like when you're trying to make someone jealous] Ava: [when you're loling too hard into his mouth like 'scuse me] James: [kissing her neck instead so she can have her adorable lol] Ava: [reacting to that in a v different way] James: [we back at it again at krispy kreme soz twilight saga] Ava: [i swear to god the ily curse is so real] James: [this always happens to us, don't talk for a bit lads, wink wonk] Ava: [its because we give them such high-pressure situations but yes, you should fully hook up 'cos haven't yet] James: [I wonder if the orgasm headache thing would work for a concussion one or not] Ava: [my boo says #experiment] James: [imma google it but I don't expect an answer] James: [nobody is telling me but if it can help a migraine I don't see why it wouldn't] Ava: [you'll be fine bitch, just a shameless excuse that he needs to hang around longer] James: [we should totally also do the shameless thing when he falls asleep and then wakes up immediately but is like oh no how long was I asleep because not only worried about her we know] Ava: [for sure, just there chilling like 🥰 'not long, but you looked peaceful'] James: ['I was' and more 😍 'I am' just snuggling happily because deserved af] Ava: [kissing the top of his head 'good' then lying down and snuggling harder 'I'm so glad you're here, that you're okay'] James: ['I'm glad that I'm here & that you're okay' kissing her forehead and holding her so tightly because he was so worried that something much worse had happened to her] Ava: ['It was kinda scary how much I missed you- like I said I WAS extra but I think, no, I still am, I can't lie to you'[ James: [when you are just falling so hard for her rn smiling like look at this perfect 😇 'you don't have to miss me any longer, minus however long you're spending in the Seychelles, of course'] Ava: ['Yeah?' trying but failing not to sound so hopeful 'And two weeks, so not as long as it has been, not that I was definitely counting or anything'] James: ['I was afraid, no, I am afraid but very few things have ever scared me as much as when I saw you were in hospital & I thought-'] Ava: [just holding him back even tighter like you could not be closer 'I'm so sorry I scared you, I won't ever do it again, even if I get hit by something more substantial than a 90lbs mum on a lightweight bike' and shaking her head with a lil lol 'cos it is funny even though it can be as bad as a car crash actual sometimes] James: ['You scare me in the best ways, you don't have to stop, I don't want you to' because think of the new things he's already done and the new things he's already felt, it makes me emosh goodbye] Ava: [when that's the hottest thing you've ever heard like 'scuse me round two] James: [you've actually got all night for once so make the most of it lads] Ava: [like literally no one needs it more than him so I'm allowing it, there's enough shit happened, happening and still to come] James: [amen to that] Ava: [happy bubble forever] James: [if only like, he is NOT gonna wanna leave in the morning but maybe we could say that like Jay has a playdate with friends or something cos soz babe you can't keep a secret so he just gets the baby and comes back] Ava: [that would be a moment] James: [just casually meet each other how cute] Ava: [have a normal, happy day like you're meant to oh] James: [you all deserve it truly] Ava: [meet your potential future stepchild babe] James: [do we wanna have them go out or stay in?] Ava: [🤔 obvs really want them to go to Kensington Park 'cos Peter Pan and like obvs I doubt anyone who would be bothered to report to Chloe is gonna be there but it is risky so maybe save it idk] James: [we will bookmark that for the future because MUST but they could take Frank on a walk somewhere cos we ain't referenced that sweet sir even if it's just through the streets like] Ava: [that's a good shout, you better be a good boy lol] James: [and don't cockblock them rn please] James: [they'd look like a little fam, I am FINE] Ava: [and lowkey behave more like one in one day like the bar is so low tah Chlo] James: [the scolding tea] James: how are you feeling? Ava: 😊 So happy Ava: Only a bit tired from the whole staying awake thing and you keeping me awake, like 😏 Ava: oh, and Frank said you've redeemed yourself so well done there too Ava: how're you and the girls? James: I'm happy to hear all of that James: has your dizziness gone? James: we're fine, but tired too Ava: Yeah Ava: barely a headache Ava: and my parents get in early AM so I should be all set to go when they do get here James: how much packing is there left to do? Ava: All of it but deciding which 14 bikinis I wanna take shouldn't take too long James: are you sure? I think it would take me a really long time to decide Ava: I'll put some stories up Ava: You can help me Ava: I reckon I need your clearly more considered opinion James: of course you do James: you wouldn't want to spend the entirety of your holiday wishing you'd chosen differently Ava: so true Ava: especially as I'm not allowed to pack my pout James: everyone is well aware of how important the pursuit of a tan is to you, darling, anything that jeopardises that, well, it's bound to be very pout inducing James: you'll be forgiven Ava: I don't know if my family is as forgiving as you Ava: perhaps they don't like my pout as much Ava: they definitely aren't as supportive in bikini related decision making James: I'll dedicate paragraphs to both James: multiple lengthy ones Ava: It'll seem gratuitous in the movie but nothing is too much for the book James: as long as it remains included in the director's cut James: or else I will be devastated Ava: I'll demand it in my contract Ava: I think it'll be a first in favour of taking your clothes off instead of keeping 'em on James: thank you James: you do deserve a multitude of firsts, honestly Ava: you deserve so much Ava: much more than I'm allowed to give you Ava: that reminds me Ava: as I can't give you anything as a thank you, I've had to get creative James: so much of what I deserve is negative & there is nothing you owe to me in any capacity, thanks included James: but I'd never want to discourage creativity Ava: Shh sh Ava: in the spirit of firsts and trying new things Ava: when you're all less worn out, go to [a sassy but kid-friendly cafe/restaurant that's a bit out there and exotic and definitely nowhere Chloe has ever made you take her] and tell 'em you're eating on me, yeah Ava: then when I get back and you're free, you're coming over and I'm cooking James: Ava Ava: It's already arranged, I go there all the time, it's the 2nd best Brazilian food I've had James: you've been to Brazil for the 1st, haven't you? I can tell Ava: Actually no, mores the pity Ava: but my Uncle is Brazilian and a chef, my cousin too Ava: having a big weird family has unexpected perks Ava: if you like it, I already have a recipe lined up that's meant to be 🔥 but even a novice like me can master it James: you'll have to wait patiently for my review because I regrettably can't send you a picture of my face after the 1st mouthful to serve as one, but okay Ava: I'll do my best Ava: though having any patience when it comes to you doesn't seem to be my strong suit Ava: arguably not a virtue I'm known for, ever, but especially now James: I'll do my best not to miss you so hard that it's physically painful but that doesn't appear to be my strong suit either & as previously agreed, I won't make any promises I'm forced to immediately break Ava: Oh Ava: Knowing it wasn't just me finding out that painful cliche is painfully real is somehow a comfort, to know you'll want to avoid the feeling as much as I do from now on but it also hurts me even more, the idea of you having to feel it at all in the first place Ava: but there is no conflict in just how hard I'm looking forward to seeing you again after this ill-timed holiday James: I don't ever want you to be in pain because of me, I have to insist on only the good cliches going forward James: devastatingly a postcard can't be included in that Ava: Hmm, got any long-lost great aunties I can pretend to be? 🤔😂 James: If I do my wife is bound to be aware of them, their current financial situation & any possible health concerns they are facing Ava: Valid Ava: Don't need to give her any more reason to 💀💀💀 me Ava: At least no holiday is complete without the obligatory narcissistic poolside shoot James: suffice to say I've never had a complete holiday, in that case Ava: I bet you've had to be cameraman plenty though Ava: so rude when you're so nice to look at James: & yet I've never been trusted to pick a filter Ava: 🙄 Ava: does she not know that you're an artiste James: no, it's our secret Ava: 😊 I like that James: I like you Ava: I like that more James: I wish I could see you again before you go Ava: Me too Ava: I kinda wish I weren't going James: how early are your parents getting back exactly? Ava: like 4am kinda early James: I won't make you stay awake again James: I know how tired you must be Ava: 🥺 James: I'm so relieved that I can't see that look on your actual face Ava: It's 💔 Ava: but I'll survive Ava: about James: you're a very strong person Ava: You James: I'm not Ava: You are though Ava: you put up with so much shit James: is that strength or is it weakness? Ava: I think it's strength Ava: You can't necessarily stop shit happening or get shit out of your life Ava: no matter how strong Ava: and you manage to do all the shit you have to regardless James: I'd like to think you're right Ava: Then you should Ava: I encourage it Ava: 🤓 me James: you are undeniably clever Ava: Try to be Ava: when I'm not standing in the middle of cycle paths, obviously James: I heard you say that bike came out of nowhere Ava: Yeah Ava: I miss you already Ava: Frank is not as good a nurse, like at all James: if you can fall asleep now, I'd feel less guilty about the prospect of asking you not to later James: should I hypothetically be able to get away Ava: 🛌🏃 Ava: Promise James: I can't give you a promise back Ava: I know Ava: but this way, I either stay asleep and that's that Ava: or I get the best surprise to wake me up James: what did I do to deserve you? Ava: This is the part where I say something very bad but Ava: you don't seem capable Ava: you're just James: whatever it was, I need to know so I can keep doing it Ava: just be you Ava: another cliche you've proven to be true and real James: this fortnight without you is going to be really cliche James: there's no chance of it existing beyond the 1st draft Ava: not even for my eyes only? James: well James: maybe Ava: Please please please James: okay James: you are my fairest critic & you do have beautiful eyes Ava: Yours are better Ava: but I won't be too jealous if I get to look at them more James: I definitely can't promise not to be envious of everyone in the Seychelles who will get to look at you more than I can Ava: Do you ever get a decent lunchbreak? Ava: we could facetime James: I'll figure something out James: because my dad takes the longest lunch breaks, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's the 80s Ava: 😏 we love a throwback 🙄 James: I'll take Matty to work with me, she'll distract whoever I need her to Ava: She is very cute Ava: I see it James: I won't be saying anything the like of that if she won't sleep tonight though Ava: 🤞 for you and her Ava: shame she's not yet at the walking stage Ava: Frank is so 💤 James: I can't keep her in any kind of routine, it's frustrating for both of us Ava: That's hard James: it's harder for her than it is for me, she never knows what's happening Ava: She'll get there Ava: I was the worst baby Ava: hopefully before you totally lose your mind, 'course James: I find it impossible to believe you weren't 😇 Ava: I was pretty premmie so my poor parents were confined to perpetual bright light for ages when I got home James: both the girls were so late James: that was an entirely different struggle Ava: I can imagine how delightful Ava: usually excusable but when you set the bar low to begin with 😬 James: the last thing I want to do is badmouth her to you, but as we know, sometimes things write themselves Ava: I feel you Ava: not a cliche I particularly wanna be either James: of course not Ava: but you can vent, you know Ava: I don't even have to reply, just if you need to put it somewhere James: no, I can't Ava: okay, just a suggestion James: so much of this is already not fair to you, Ava Ava: I don't think it is Ava: you've never lied about any of it, you're always realistic about what you can and can't give me Ava: and I'd like to help, in any tiny way I'm able James: you don't know what she's like & I'd rather you didn't have to know James: let's keep it at you don't do sympathy Ava: I know very little but that's not positive so it doesn't take your author level of imagination if I wanna go there without your guidance Ava: and it isn't sympathy but okay Ava: I won't mention her and you don't have to either James: I just can't have you seeing me differently because Ava: I'd never see you differently because of what she's like as a person James: it's too big of a risk for me to take, that you'll end up thinking less of me than you do now Ava: You can trust me Ava: but you don't have to Ava: I won't push anything, I don't need to Ava: as much as I want to take things fast in so many respects, I'm never going to take it where you don't want it James: it isn't you I don't trust James: I'm not a reliable narrator, she's made sure I'm not Ava: However...intertwined and diluted you feel your story got, because of her, because of whatever Ava: it's always gonna be your story to tell, if you want it Ava: and I'll always listen to how you tell it James: Ava Ava: James James: if it was a story I was in control of I'd come to the airport & tell you not to go James: cliche or not Ava: and I'd stay Ava: but that's far too much like a happy ending and we've only just begun James: you're right again Ava: don't sound so surprised 😉 James: I was actually trying to decide where it falls on the scale of ideas & habits, good, bad or somewhere in between James: that you always seem to be Ava: Have you drawn a conclusion yet? James: I couldn't possibly tell you James: you're supposed to be asleep Ava: damn Ava: you'll tell me in the morning? James: yes Ava: Okay, I'll go, as long as you know it is so reluctantly it's practically under protest James: & I won't stay here hoping you don't, as long as you know it's under identical conditions Ava: Noted Ava: Goodnight and sweet dreams for whenever that happens for you then, love James: thank you

"I gotta say, I'm a little surprised" Cisco/Averey
This is actually and idea I’ve had to introduce to Cisco’s character in my fics, but also didn’t think it really fit him at the same time? So, thanks, Anonymous for selecting this prompt! It fell came in perfectly at the right time. In my fic, “In a Flash”, I had a scene where Cisco and Averey talked about what brought them to Central City. In that conversation, Cisco had mentioned that he had grown up in Detroit in a not so great area, and he helped Dante with a not so great situation, before the Ramon family moved to Central City. I was thinking that he had to have internalized some “tricks of the trade” so to speak, on how to make it living there, so what if that side of him was shown in his every day, better, life in Central City? And that’s where this came from!
——–
“All I’m saying is, mate, that there’s nothing wrong with taking public transportation, yeah? I mean, I’m saving a whole bunch of money a year with it.”
“You don’t even own a car.”
“Still. With my bus pass, I don’t have to pay each time I come aboard.”
Cisco twisted his mouth to the side, before allowing his smile to straighten it. “Ok, but I like walking. You really get the chance to see Central City this way, instead of a blur as you’re racing down the streets.”
“Sounds like something you should be saying to Barry,” Averey laughed. She shoved her hands into her jeans pockets, making a show of extending the width of her strides. “I see your point, but there’s no way I’d forget anything about this city. Not with these eyes, anyway.” She made a V shape with her index and middle finger, pointing at her own eyes before making a show of pointing them around her. With her abilities, she could see and remember every little thing about her day. There was so much everyone else would miss or just forget. For that reason, she kind of felt sorry for the average citizen of Central City
“We all can’t be blessed with amazing eyes like yours,” Cisco said. Averey returned his smile with a shy one of her own, briefly bowing her head. She didn’t see the group of people at the corner. Cisco placed his hand in the small of her back, guiding her off the sidewalk and across the street. To her look of bewilderment, he just said, “You’re right, there’s nothing wrong with taking the bus.” He removed his hand, briefly glancing over his shoulder at the . “If you don’t mind being stuck in one place with so many people. I may be open to people most of the time, but I need to recharge by my lonesome, too.”
“Right,” Averey laughed, “how is it any different than taking a car? Just pop in your earbuds and go.”
“Because you choose who gets to be in your personal space. No worrying about some random guy choosing to take the spot next to you when all the other seats are empty.” Eyeing a man walking towards them with purposeful strides, head cocked to the side, lips moving, Cisco felt himself lift his chin upwards. He pushed his hands into his coat pockets. Rolled back his shoulders. Turning his head to speak to Averey’s profile, he used his hair to hide the sideways gaze he kept fixed on the approaching man. “You can choose what music you get to listen to and not at the will of the person blasting theirs at 20,000 decibels. And, if you ever needed to make a quick escape, just pop open the door and go.”
“You’ve been thinking about this a lot, haven’t you?” Averey shook her head back and forth, clearly amused. “When have you ever needed to escape a bus?”
“I’m just saying,” Cisco said, watching the man stride past them saying, “I’m almost there. Just a couple more blocks. Please, hold the reservation.” Cisco spotted white earbuds in the man’s ears, and then he noticed the He sighed in relief through his nose. “It doesn’t hurt to know how to get out of situations.” He put his hands to his chest, widening his eyes in innocence. “I’ve seen stories online. I know I’m not the only one that can let their minds wander and think about how they would save the day in certain dire situations.”
“Liiike, what Vibe would do if a meta attacked right now?” Averey asked, referring to his super alter ego.
“I would bravely breach us to safety,” Cisco said, “and let the Flash deal with everything sowe can enjoy ourselves on our date.” He removed his hand from his pocket and Averey grabbed a hold of it. “I think you should avoid trouble when you can, that’s all.”
“Reckon in our line of work, that’s not entirely possible, hey.” As if on cue, a loudpop was heard over the sound of the early evening traffic. Instantly, Averey’s head whipped around and her eyes darted from car to car, and person to person. “See what I mean?”
“You’re the one who jumped at the sound.” Still holding Averey’s hand, he curled and uncurled his fingers, trying to get some feeling back in them after her grip tightened dramatically. “Practically have to peel you off the ceiling, scaredy cat.” Averey stuck her tongue out at him. “It’s OK, it was just a car back fire.” Cisco squeezed her hand just as tight for good measure. “Come on, I know a shortcut to the park.”
“But if it was something–”
“Then the police or the Flash, will handle it. Besides, I asked for the night off and Barry said he’ll do his best to not bring us in to it.”
“Guess it pays to have your mate for a boss.”
“Considering our business meetings are usually done over binge watching baking shows? Yeah, it’s the best.”
The two of them laughed as they made their way to Central City Park. After a quick trip up and down the promenade, they decided on making a stop in a little Italian eatery, ordering some food to enjoy at the tables by the water front. Conversation flowed easily between the two of them over the clinking of silverware on plates.
“So, are you going to tell me what’s been bothering you?”
Cisco speared a chunk of lasagna, smiling as he watched the melted cheese stretch and stretch as he lifted the bite towards his mouth. “How do you mean?”
“I notice a lot of things, Cisco.” Sliding a forkful of spaghetti to her mouth, she nodded in his direction, gaze shifting upwards towards his hair. “Like you’ve put in some extra work today. Your hair is wavier than usual.”
“Well, you know,” Cisco laughed, proud of himself, “you can’t get incredible locks like this without putting some effort into it. But, I get the feeling that, that’s not what you were referring to.” He took his bite of lasagna into his mouth and chewed happily.
“As soon as we left the car park, you’ve been acting strange, yeah?” Averey pointed at him with her fork. “We changed directions twice, crossed the street earlier than we needed to, and you puffed out your chest when that bloke was coming towards us.”
“Oh.” Cisco stared at her, his chewing slowed. “I didn’t realize I did that.”
“And you could quickly decipher a car back fire. I thought it was a gun”
“I’ve listened to neighbors shoot off fireworks whenever they felt like it, not just on holidays.” Cisco shrugged. “And we’ve been around the police, and Joe, long enough for me to distinguish between all three pretty easily.” Averey continued to scrutinize him. “Ok, yeah, I guess I learned all this stuff back before I moved to Central City. I’ve already told you I grew up in a rough area, and the kind of trouble Dante used to get into, right?” Dabbing at her lips with a napkin, Averey nodded. “There were just some rules you quickly worked out for yourself. You knew what times were best to be walking by yourself, who to avoid, knowing when not to talk, that kind of thing.”
“And throwing yourself out of a moving car?”
“Too many people can be on a bus. You could sit in the wrong spot, tune out, and be surrounded faster than you know what’s happening. I was the ‘debt collection’ so to speak once or twice.” At Averey’s silence, Cisco managed a weak smile. “Not really a romantic topic is it?”
“No,” Averey agreed, sharing his smile, “but I asked. I gotta say, I’m a little surprised. You really do know how to handle yourself.”
“Because you wouldn’t expect it from my soft exterior?” Averey widened her eyes and chose to take another bite of spaghetti instead of answering. “I told you; I grew up with two older brothers.” Cisco shrugged. “I mean, I know I’m smarter than them, but they taught me a lot. That, and having to deal with Hartley for as long as I did, and being employed by a psycho from the future that murdered my best friend’s mom in the past, turned me into the resourceful man you see in front of you.”
