Harper Alexander x Fem!AFAB!Reader || Smutshot
Note: Y'all can thank @darlingpassion for this! It was inspired by her recent 18+ Harper Headcanons (Oh my lord, go check them out. I read them in the middle of class and- I- 😅 lets just say we're lucky I'm still unwell otherwise the colour my face turned woulda been sus XD )
Plot: You (A would-have-been victim if you hadn't have been so cunning and wormed your way into Harper's good books) teach Harper what a lady in this day and age expects from her lover 👍👍👍
Warnings: Cunnilingus and begging, and slight hate fucking?. Plus both parties are dominant so there's a sort of ongoing dispute involved. Not super hot at the start but trust me- it heats up XD
"You want me... to put my mouth... down there?" Harper never looked so confounded when he finally understood what you were getting at- that sweet accent of his growing thicker and his judgemental eyes flickering from the dead-serious look on your face- to your parted legs.
"I promise this'll be a hit with the gals that come into town for the jubilee... " You insist, smirking at his reaction and crossing one of your legs over the other thigh once again, now that he got the picture. Then you hold two fingers by your head, like a scouts oath. "I guarantee it."
Rolling his eyes, Harper takes a seat on the edge of the bed next to you, before leaning forward in order to look at you. "You know, when you said y'could teach me a couple'a things... I was thinkin' a long the lines of interestin' role-plays... and knots."
"Yeah we'll get there," You brush him off. "But this is essential, my guy! If you cant do this, you're really only worth the length of your little mr- and I've seen him. Now, I don't wanna emasculate you, Harp, but... ehhhh, he's average."
Harper's jaw drops. "Avera- "
"Which is why this is such a good idea, that I have had! You can thank me later- now go get on your knees."
He just squints at you, not moving an inch except to squeeze the edge of the mattress on either side of his hips; frustrated by you.
Lord, this guy is always frustrated with you. All you want to do is help- and maybe survive, also- and all he has for you is arguments and a stink face. Huffing, you set your hands on your hips and twist your upper body to fully face him. Lets see how his ego fairs with this manoeuvre. "Should I ask Buckman, then?"
... His eyes narrow. "... Why?"
"He's, like, your pimp right?" Harper mouths the word 'pimp', like he doesn't recognise it - adorable country boy that he is, - and you huff. Okay, lets try that again. "He looks like the kinda man that gets it- maybe he can talk to you about the importance of a ladies pleasure, instead of me? Is that what you want Harp? Is it?- "
Harper cant take any amount of teasing from you, it annoys and frustrates him, and before you can even finish what you were saying he's got one of his hands curled around the back of your head and his mouths crashes into yours.
He's not really the most skilled kisser, he kisses like an old man who believes its just a stepping stone to get a woman to suck his dick, but fine, damn, it does the trick!~ And besides- you can work on it with him later.
After a moment you lean away from him, too far for him to follow you, and flick your eyes from his- down to the ground in front of you.
Hm?
For a moment he sits there, his perfect workman's hand still a comforting - almost affectionate, - weight on the back of your neck as he thinks, grumpily to himself. Then he sets his jaw and goes to kneel down in front of you. "Fine- teach me howta do it already."
"... You know, that sour face is not doing you any favours. Some men like this kinda thing- " He cuts you off, picking lazily at the waistband of your pants while you stop and just blink down at him. You watch him take out a blade from his back pocket (And first of all, WHY does he have that back there?? God, this man- infuriating and hot at the same damn time), and consequently let out a yelp.
"Hurry up, or I'm gonna slice these things off myself."
"... Rude."
That makes him smirk; An unfairly devastating smirk for such an asshole-... but pleasant. So pleasant. When he does that, the rest of your life stuck here doesn't look quite so grim.
Even though he's a dick-
~
"Am I doin' this right??"
Giving a sigh, with your back on the bed and your legs spread wide for Harper, you roll your eyes. "If you're talking, no... "
"... You're sure wet enough... " He mutters back under his breath, and you promptly get up onto your forearms to spit some facts at him.
Ohhhhh this guy. That smug look on his face as his eyes move slowly from your core to your face. Infuriating!! You're gonna kick him. In the face- "Hey- you. Barn-Boy. For your information, that is because I've been picturing Granny Boone this entre time- now stop staring at it and do something." You exclaim, before plopping back down on the bed, blowing hair out of your eyes. His eyes only seemed to light up with me yelling at him, you think, rolling your eyes. And he says the kinky thing is all an act...
Pfft. I see your soul, Harper Alexander.
While you're lost in thought over Harper, he seems to decide on taking another crack at this- and leans his head in towards your pussy. You don't feel any breath, because he's dead and he doesn't breath, but you definitely feel a presence. A tingle. You just know something's about to happen, and its maddening- you wanna arch your hips, slip the heels of your feet into his shoulder blades and push him forward, or buck up- anything to just feel his lips on you- but you curl your fingers subtly into the bedsheets, instead. No need for him to know the effect he has on you. That wouldn't do.
When his lips do touch you, its not without skill. He has been kissing for a long long time, so he isn't unfamiliar with using his lips, but there's just something missing. Its nice, but... not amazing. As he presses his face into you, slowly taking his tongue all over you, you think back to moments in the past when men have touched you like this. When its been so good your toes curled and you couldn't help but grind your cunt against his tongue.
... What was the difference?...
Biting your bottom lip, you rack your brain over this for a few more moments as Harper continues to explore; Even using his thumbs to rub up and down the outside of your lips, leaving lovely tingles in their wake. Still, you wonder... what's missing...
Maybe... he's not... really into it?? If not, you really shouldn't make him-
Wait.
Suddenly your whole body goes stiff, remembering. You hope he doesn't notice, which he mustn't because he doesn't stop his ministrations at all, because you have had an epiphany. Even the first time you two were together, he was like this. Without a spark. But he warmed up and it got really- really, good.
Because you started begging him.
Getting up on your elbows again to see him, you glare... even though the sight of this beautiful man with his face in your pussy does send butterflies all the way up through you. Because, god... This narcissist. Of course. Of course- he gets off to you begging him. You're not surprised, but you are irritated.
... well. Its worth a shot anyway.
Shifting, you slide your legs slowly up over his shoulders, caging the beautiful man between your thighs and allowing him a better angle, and transform your face- closing your eyes, parting your lips, and tipping your head back. When he leans in some more and licks a particularly broad stripe through your lips, gliding his tongue fully over your clit, you let out your moan. One of your heels digs into his back, and you push your core out a little bit closer to him, biting your lip and bunching up some more of the bedding into your fists. "Damn... " You whisper, putting on a performance- even though your pleasure is real.
Harper stops. He disconnects from you, and leans back on his heels, and when you crack your eyes open ever-so-delicately, you see him raising a brow at you. "What in the world was that??"
"That was encouragement, Harper."
"Y'think I need it?" He asks, though one corner of his mouth quirks up.
You just give a wink, before laying down again on your back. There's a secret smirk on your lips as you look at the ceiling. "Please... just do that again."
The pleased lilt to his voice is clear, and you're expecting to just put it on for the rest of this, for his benefit. "... hm. Well, your wish is my command I s'pose. Get comfortable, Miss Y/N."
... But when he comes back in, you're immediately shocked at the sudden change in him- you actually let out a sudden yelp of pleasure, feeling his thumbs spread your lips wide open for him now and his tongue dart deeper inside your core then you thought he could. You very nearly slap a hand over your mouth because of the very unintentional gasp- and then- "Oh god!- "
Your hips jolt forward, too, into his soft lips and immediately feel him chuckle against you. It make sit even worse, the vibrations directly against your clit. "Fuck!- fuck, fuck, fuck- "
Harper presses his mouth hard against the outside of your cunt and devours you, shoving his tongue into you as deeply as he can get and thoroughly tongue-fucking your most sensitive parts- making you whine, and yelp, and buck into him like a desperate, needy bitch.
The sounds he's making, too, are hot. Groaning into your pussy like he's eating something fucking delicious, your taste on his tongue exactly what he was looking for as he rubs his mouth more securely into the crevice between your thighs.
When you're so close to a very sudden, very violent orgasm- Harper takes the moment away. Starts giving you slow, language strokes that are just not deep enough- the bastard even takes one of his hands away from you in order to hold your calf on his shoulder. Tight.
Stopping you from pushing him in again.
He chuckles once again against your poor, throbbing and now tragically empty cunt, and gently rubs his nose against your mound. It would be sweet, affectionate; if you didn't hate his guts for it.
Giving a whine crossed with a desperate, frustrated sob, you throw an arm over your eyes so as to hide from the shame of outright begging this asshole. "Harperrr, plee-eesseeeee... "
"Don't you worry, Miss. Heh, I aint done."
"... Wh- Ah!" When he suddenly slips a long finger into and starts torturously rubbing at your inner walls with it you really do slap a hand over your mouth- afraid of the noises coming out of you, now. Another finger goes in, covering more area as he ruthlessly attacks your deepest, most private, most sensitive spots.
Your hips aren't just arching anymore, they're following his rhythm; Grinding into his evil fingers now, rolling so they move inside you just the way you need. "Y'like that, Miss Y/N?"
"More Harper, please Harper- "
"I gotcha."
Then he leans his head in between your thighs again, and he struggles, but he manages to lick you while his sopping wet fingers thrust in and out of you fast.
With your most embarrassing sound yet and one more roll against his face, you cum right into his damn face.
~
While you sit up with your hand on your chest and a pillow between your legs, just trying to calm down from that ridiculously amazing high, Harper gets up and sits down next to you; A hand on your knee and a smirk on his face. When he speaks, you give him a bemused look, while you continue to feel your racing heart inside your chest still. "So... how'd I do, then? Did I master the importance of a ladies pleasure, then? Or do we needa' do that again?"
For a moment you consider telling him to shut up, but the horny outweighs the need to wipe that look off his face. So instead you lean in, eyes half lidded, and look at him down your nose; A finger under his chin to make him look back, though he isn't looking away from you. "Practise does make perfect, Harp."
"I couldnta' said it any better myself."

I'm so glad you liked it!! ^^
And yes- Harper is absolutely a gilf!! That's kinda what I like about him XDD On the outside he's young and sweet but on the inside he's an evil little old man 🤣🤣🤣 Thats why I write him sooo mean!! XDD
This inspired me!!! Keep in mknd, I'm in the middle of a shopping center now typing this on my phone, so it wont be the best 😅 I still felt like sharing though, so here I hope you like it!:
~
Harper sat on the steps to Boone's place, elbows on his knees, a sour look on his fine face. He was watching Y/N talk with Miss Peaches and Boone, and... one of the new guys.
Their weren't nothing special about the boy- his posture was absolutely fucked, his sandy hair stuck to his forehead cuz of the sweat (Northerners just can't handle our heat. Puh), and he looked like he ate too much salt; all red, and splotchy. And-
Is that acne?? Christ-
Harper groaned and rolled his eyes, looking away then. Why was he even concerned about this? That kid was nothing compared to him, he knew it. Everyone in this town knew it- and you certainly knew it.
But that boy had one thing Harper did not.
He wasn't broke at all. He could look at Y/N and she could see how much he liked her; The admiration and the gooey-ness. Harper had lost that, a long time ago. He'd been here rotting away long before she came into his life, and she did make it - bein stuck here, - a million times better, but he could never love her so effortlessly like that. When he looked at her she just saw a broken old man. Well- on the inside, at least.
And he could tell that Y/N was eating it up. Gettin' looked at like that.
That boy was grinning like a goofy little fool, asking her questions just to keep her there, lookin nervous even.
Harper hated it with every fibre of his being. Y/N was his.
He wanted to go over there and make that fact crystal fucken clear. Walk on over to her and give that kid a glare that'd make his grandkids puke, then plant a kiss on her that'd be obscene a hundred years ago. He'd tell her sorry honey, I just couldn't resist.
But he didn't. Instead he was sat here, a pathetic old man glued to a porch and looking sulky over it. Jesus christ.
Just as Harper was about to get up and leave - he'd apologise to Buckman later. But right now he could not care about killin no yanks, - , a pair of boots land on the porch right by one of his hands. He doesn't flinch, he knows who it is.
He rolls his eyes, instead.
"'T's odd to see you in the back over here, Harper- what the hell are you doin'?"
Glancing up, Harper sees Buckman rub his jaw, looking thoughtful before looking down back at him. Harper glares and doesn't look away. "Relaxin'."
"Oh?" Buckman's eyes widen, fake-concerned. "Then why doya look like someone took a shit on your pillow just now?" He waives a hand in front of his face and scowls, 'smelling something'.
"Thats just my face, sir." Harper responds, contrary.
"... Son," Buckman sighs now, giving up pretences because he knows that Harper is stubborn as a mule- and he does not have the energy to break him tight this second. He's a very busy man; Theirs people ta eat. "I'm askin' you nicely. Go out there and deal with that whore in the purple. Please."
"Not today."
"Wh- " Buckman is not used to being refused.
"No thanks."
"'No thanks'- "
"Uh uh."
"Alright- "Looks like he is going to have to break the little shit. First things first, what's wrong with him? Taking a look around, Buckman tries to figure it out. "Why're- ... Oh."
Harper's gaze had returned to Y/N, lookin' especially pretty today and chattin' up some Yankee boy, and Buckman could feel the soul leaving his body again. The problem was pretty self explanatory Jesus christ. What- He- This is non problem!! Has Harper seen that kid?? He- He's got velcro on his shoes- Ughhhhhhh. "... Harper. Are you, perhaps, a little jeal- "
"Sir, I swear to God, if you suggest it- "
"Fine fine!" Buckman quickly raises his hands in surrender, seeing the other man get so snippy so quickly. "... But- "
"No."
"I think you- "
"I don't."
"Harper!- "
"Sir!- Ow!"
After smacking Harper on the back of the head, Buckman huffs. "Sorry, but it had to be done. Sheesh... Look, if you ask me... -ah," Harper opens his mouth then, probably to remind the mayor that he didn't, but turns away in defeat when Buckman raises his hand again; Warning him. "I know you didn't you little bastard, but if you did... I'd tell ya to drop it while it's hot. You're being a moron and it's not attractive."
"... you know sir, that makes a lot of sense. I feel a lot better, thanks."
"Great, now go and- "
"Not."
... One of these days, Buckman is going to find a way to kill everyone here and live the rest of his hell-like eternity in peace and its going to be so lovely- "I swear to- You know what? Fine. Here we go- "
Before Harper can even turn to see what in the world Buckman means by that, he's being yanked up and shoved down the stairs. "Hey!- "
"Get out there and don't make me say it again. Go seduce the little yankee bitch or go claim Y/N- I don't care. But keep your behind off that porch. If I see you sitting again I will find a way to kick your flat ass. Jesus christ almighty... gimmie strength... " With this, Buckman strides past Harper and approaches Boone and the rest of that group. Harper watches him spare Y/N and that doting yankee boy an exasperated glance, rolling his remaining eye, before excusing his wife and going to plant he 'festivities' with her.
Peaches goes off next, catching sight of better prey, and that leaves Y/N alone with that dopey looking fool hanging off her every word.
Harper watches them for another moment, seeing Y/N get her arm touched, and decides he really needs to go over there.
Because- no. That is too far. That's enough. Time to ruin that little yanks whole fucken day.
(I hope you like the little Harper drabble!! XDD And, side note- Buckman is so much more fun to write when he is not the love interest?? XDD Might have to write more Harper and Boone stuff just so I can write platonic, aide character Buckman XDDD )
BRO I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!!!
I'm so happy and flattered that I inspired you for one! And how you wrote Haroer being a jelous bitch and Buckman being a tired old man is spot on! And Y/N with the Yankee boy!! This boy sounds so sweet 🥹🥹🥹🥹
I want a whole multi chapter fic of this, you have no idea. Thank you for sharing with me!!!

Timeless.
Summary: 1943. 1975. 2024. Three different decades, three different lives, three different times your life and Bucky's interwined; he lost you twice, will he do it again?
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Female!Reader.
TW: It can change each chapter but themes of Bucky as soldier and as the Winter Soldier in general, some stalker behaviour but with good intentions?, flashbacks and a not so good writing style by me, lots of feels, one awful boss, one jerk that almost gets reader in an accident, mentions of headaches, past reader is mentioned to be named Beth but that changes for 2024 version of her so I nicknamed her Ace, this will be a +18 story so minors dni, as always please remember english is not my first language so if I make a mistake or forget something let me know.
Pictures from pinterest and graphic and dividers by the amazing @ firefly-graphics so all credits to the creators.
Your head was aching like never before and that was your life now; annoying pain, annoying boss who was a fucking brat with a trust fund who never heard the word “no” as a kid and that now acted like she was entitled to make your life miserable.
It wasn’t like you were and idiot who believed a job like this will be easy, as a born and raised new yorker who watched The devil wears Prada too many times you were aware of what will come your way as PA of the editor of one of the best magazines in the country but your issuess were beyond that, it was easy to handle a bully if you are getting something in exchange besides a check that barely paid your rent.
This job was suppossed to be your opportunity and Mia Alexander was beating up your expectations. With a sigh you picked the coffee and make your way back to the office, it was so stupid that you have to walk three blocks in the pouring rain just to get her stupid cold brew from the stupid pretencious coffee shop that always made you feel like you were back in high school. Always the outsider in a world ruled by assholes, just like the one who pushed you too hard while waiting to cross the street. For an idiotic reason, your first thought was that you will have to go back for another cold brew when the one in your hand hit you and then the pavement, not the bike coming your way.
It happened too fast for you to understand it, the asshole pushing you towards the traffic, your annyoance, the stranger who hold you back in the blink of an eye, the pain in your head stopping and then you were standing at a safe distance to the cars, with your umbrella tossed in the pavement and absolutely no idea of what had happened.
Alexander yelled at you for your aspect when you came back late with her first coffee all over your dull clothes and the second one not good enough apparently, the best you could do was bite your tongue and not tell her to fuck off. This job was everything you had.
“What the fuck happened to you, babe?” Harper didin’t care about Mia but that was because she couldn’t get her fired being her sister and everything, you were a different story.
“Your evil sister doing her usual shit” was your only response, Harper was completely different to Mia and if you tried to tell her about the incident she will drove you herself to ER. She followed you to the bathroom, your blouse was so stained it couldn’t be saved and still you wanted to do something to don’t cry.
Harper pursed her perfect red lips, it didn’t matter how many times she tried to help you, Mia was their mother’s favorite and will never do anything against her; the best she could do for you was to get you out of that clothes.
“Take that off, I’m bringing you something and don’t argue” Harper disappeared before you could try and came back with a pretty blouse with a V line and a small waist that will rock with your boring blue jeans.
“I can’t wear that” you refused still covered in coffee.
“Why? I have seen you wear more skimpy stuff when we go out” someone walked in the bathroom and shot you an intrigued look when she saw Harper undressing you.
“You know why” your dumb boss didn’t like that the person walking three steps behind her attracted the attention so you were expected to wear boring clothes in order to not be noticed by anyone.
“I’m telling you, one of this days I’m going to punch her in the face and I will not give a fuck if I get cut out…” your hand in her mouth stopped her to finish her sentence “back off, Ace” her nickname make you roll your eyes “you know I’m right.”
She was but your life was a constant reminder that no matter how right you were, you had no other option but to do as you were told if you wanted to pay the bills and help your parents, you stopped wishing for a way out long ago, this was your life.
Bucky went back to the tower that night after making sure you were home safe first, Sam tried to call him back but he ignored his phone and jumped in the shower, the hot water barely easing the tension in his muscles. He could have lost you that afternoon.
The super soldier still wanted to chase the idiot who nearly get you killed but Bucky wouldn’t be able to hold back if he saw him again, that’s why he asked Sam to take care of it without giving a good explanation beyond what had happened: a jerk pushed a by-stander to the traffic and didn’t give a shit about it. Bucky had to act like you were nothing to him, just another civilian he could help. He was liar, a murderer, a destroyer of lives but that lie, insignificant and not even believable, left his chest aching. You were everything; you always were from the moment he set his eyes on you that night in 1943.
Bucky expected more from his last night home before going to war, his date was nice but Connie will never think twice about him once he was gone and in all honesty, he wouldn’t do it too. Maybe it was the fact that Steve insisted in being enlisted that left him so uneasy, maybe the thought of leaving his family behind when his ma and his sisters already lose too much or maybe it was everything mixed with his fears.
Opposite to Steve, he never wanted to go to the war, it was what left them without a father, what left his mom without a husband, Bucky swore he will never abandon his family to fight and die alone in someone else’s land but his country didn’t care about his promises and his fears and demanded his blood and sacrifice anyway.
He tried to don’t let his family see this, not even Steve but Rebecca could see it, only three years of difference between them made them close to know each other well. She was there when Bucky got the letter informing him about being drafted, she held him while he cried like a little kid and swore to don’t say a word to the others, Rebecca woke up early the morning of his mandatory training to make him breakfast and give him a hug before their ma could do the same.
Bucky didn’t want to leave her in charge, she was his little sister, his responsibility but he was sure Rebeca will do it.
The way back after leaving Connie and her friend home was silent, Steve probably was back in their apartment after being rejected again, Bucky promised himself to be reasonable with his best friend later but after he spent one more night with his family.
In the porch stairs there were two girls whistling a short melody, he could see them from the distance, one was Rebecca but he didn’t knew who was the other one, her hair pinned up perfectly giving him a good view of one perfect neck and three moles aligned like a little constellation.
When he got close enough, Rebeca spotted him and she broke a smile.
“Bucky! You are here!” His sister got up, holding him in her embrace. After all those years he could swear he still remembered her scent: homemade cookies and lilacs. “You are early” she said, giving him a suspicious look.
Before she could say more, he interrupted “Who’s your friend, Becca?”
You shot him a funny glance, like you knew what he was doing and follow his sister after fixing your skirt.
“I’m Beth, nice to meet you” You and Rebecca were being friends for more of a year but you never met her brother, Rebeca tried to set you both up but he insisted in not dating anyone as young as her sister, didn’t seem right but that was before he got a chance to actually know you.
He knew a lot of beautiful girls; he probably dated a good number of them in the last years but you were more than your pretty eyes or your perfect lips, he never felt like his whole world stopped with any of them the way he felt it with you.
“Beth” Bucky repeated, his tongue tasting sweet with the echo of your name in his mouth. A charming smile made its way to his lips and you blushed under the intensity of his eyes. Everybody talked about Rebecca’s brother, such a ladies man, a respectful one but a ladies man anyways and you were raised better than to be one of those dames who let men sweep them off their feet.
“I should go back home, Becca” you said giving your friend a quick hug and a nod to her brother.
“Let Bucky walk you home Beth, is late and your mother will not be happy if she knows you went alone” oh Rebecca was good, Bucky could see the spark in her eyes, identical to his, and he could hear her future constant reminders from now on about how she told him so, she was always right about him and Beth.
“I don’t want to impose” was all the girl could say and Bucky took that as his chance.
“Please, allow me to escort you home safe, miss” he used his best smile and extended his arm like a gentleman “it will be an honor.”
For a heartbeat, he could see your intention to roll your eyes but you agreed and took his arm, Rebeca didn’t do a good job at hiding her smile saying her goodbyes before going back to the house to tell Winnifred everything.
And that was the only time he could be close to you before he lose everything he was once.

Maniacs-Harper Alexander xReader (2001 Maniacs)
(Based on the movie:2001 Maniacs Field Of Screams from 2010)
It's been about two years since i left that place i used to call home,Pleasant Valley is the name and it consists only or 2001 population. I was raised there since i was little with my family who taught me to eat the same everyone else eats there, humans. Everyone in Pleasant Valley are cannibals and every year they have a carnival when tourists arrive at their spot by accident and later on everyone ends up dead. I never liked the idea of being a cannibal and being surrounded by them that's till i left and the only person i told i was living way the mayor.
The only reason why i stayed was because of my stupid crush on my childhood friend,Harper Alexander. I missed him dearly but i had to leave that place for good..that's until i heard a group talking about making a movie. So here i am in the bus with these bunch of idiots, a hispanic woman only talking about a movie which was driving me insane, a perverted jewish man with his camera, two stupid blonds and one them them holding their dead dog for some fucking reason,a gay man trying to make his move on another guy and a few others.
I heard they were trying to film someplace far away from the city so i knew they would somehow end up near the Valley, I looked outside and saw that we were nearing the place "I know a place where you can film your movie." I spoke the the director.
"Really? is it near?" She asked and sat down next to me and rested her hand on my leg. This woman gives me the creeps
"It's right here!" I shouted and once she shouted the driver to stop we crashed and we all exited the bus and they started to fight.
"Oh great now were in the middle of no where." the blonde girl squealed and held onto her dead dog. I rolled my eyes and started to walk away from them, "This place hasn't changed." I mutter myself and fixed my hair before walking back, "I think i saw a few tents over there."
They all looked back and agreed in asking for help, we started walking and when we did i already saw the mayor there, granny boone and harper.my heart started to beat faster when we approached them and when we stood in front of them i felt Harper stare at me so i looked away from him.
"Welcome to Pleasant Valley! My name is Mayor Buckman."
The mayor began to introduce himself and i couldn't help but glance over to Harper,he changed,he grew his hair and dyed it black, his attire completely different from back then with now and edgy alternative look to it. "You're welcome to stay here if you'd like."

Enjoy: enemies to lovers, grumpy x sunshine, opposites attract; dislike: smut (depending on execution), tragic queerness, the booktok man (if you know, you know)
Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag (I have The Deep Dark locked and loaded for the next read)
Murder on The Orient Express by Agatha Christie
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (ugly sobbed at this book)
A Lesson in Vengence by Victoria Lee (but this book is SUPER low on my book ranking list bc horror books need to meet a certain threshold for me)
The Last Thing He Told Me (again, the bar is on the floor bc this book didn't impress me either)
Don't have one
Mystery, thriller, horror, romance (sometimes), fantasy
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (they're on my shelf to be read, but they're probably the best I can do)
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan (basic, I know, but I can't help having taste)
I don't read series generally for the reason of them not being finished and also being a big time commitment
I try to! It depends on what I find in a store or on TikTok. I love the Blind Date with a Book boxes, so I usually just go with whatever I get in those.
Again, bookstores or TikTok. I cannot walk into a B&N or a BAM or even Target without getting a book.
The Great Gatsby; The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis; The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
Percy Jackson
Don't have but want one
Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Fireheart Tiger by Aliette de Bodard
The Biscuit the Dog books and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Goodreads 1000%
178 and counting
3
Physical copy always
Molly Knox Ostertag and Casey McQuiston
Pretty much never now that I'm out of high school
N/A
Predictable endings in horror books; most horror books have had an ending I predicted from chapter 5, which ruined the experience as a reader
Talia Avramov (Payback's A Witch) and Lilah Silver (I Kissed A Girl)
The Last Thing He Told Me (kind of)
10 but I'm hoping to read another this weekend
Depends on the book. If the top reviews on Goodreads are bad, I generally don't pick up that book or add it to my tbr.
Yes, and I still do! Working on lots of things right now
Depends on location and travel method but generally 1 or 2.
No, but I have one exception in that I bought the collector's edition of RWRB.
My Harry Potter books (that I got literally probably ten years ago) because my mom and extended family have borrowed them to read.
Seven Husbands, Go the Distance by Jen Calonita, and The Night Circus
SEVEN HUSBANDS PLEASE and also I Kissed A Girl because I think it would have similar vibes to Scream (2000)
I like horror, witchy, autumnal, and sapphic books, please give me recs!
The Last Thing He Told Me, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and Jagged Little Pill by Eric Smith
Every book I've read since getting my Goodreads has a review, and I don't hold back.
Depends on the day, the vibe, and what I want. Generally I like funny or upbeat books for romance/sapphic reads, but I will always take sapphic rep in my horror/thriller/mystery books.

@yellowbird-flying so you can see my answer ^^
I agree with illadvisedships. You imagine you and your F/O's how YOU want to! Ultimately, it's to make you happy. Whatever vibes with you, no matter if you think it may not be 'conventional' or 'normal' is the perfect way to imagine your F/O's ^^
As for me... Ngl, it was only recently that I've admitted to myself of having F/O's. Like, since last year at least. I did realize little-me had a couple of fictional crushes long ago, but I didn't... I didn't really like myself, honestly. Not enough to imagine these amazing fictional character interacting with me- let alone them maybe being into me. And I'm still struggling with self-love and thinking about my F/O's in actual romantic scenarios with me, rather than just thinking about them and reader-insert scenarios. I hope that makes sense? I started collecting F/O's after I had seen illadvisedships doing it on her main account, and only recently have I started basically telling myself that it is ok to make myself happy this way. That I'm not being narcissistic and that I don't have to be a certain standard of beauty to do it, either.
Now how I imagine being with my F/O's... I'm still kind of figuring that out, too. Usually when I read X Reader content, I don't insert myself, but rather a character that has different traits (example: one reader I'll picture being blonde with purple eyes. Another reader, I'll imagine hazel eyes and reddish brown hair, etc). Kind of like a little minor OC that is solely for that fanfic. I'm still trying to figure out how I imagine ME and my F/O's together. And my latest addition of F/O's have catapulted me into the full-blown-all-the-way stage where I'm seeing ME-ME with the F/O (it's kind of overwhelming, ngl 😅). Baby Firefly, Mama Firefly, and Rufus Firefly are the ones who I have lately been having the easiest time imagining myself in their world.
Usually, I stick to myself being in my F/O's world. Or, in the case of Russ (Driller Killer) or Harper Alexander, who technically are on their own planes of reality or can travel freely, I have an easier time imagining them in my world. Russ could appear in my dreams, or Pleasent Valley migrated up north to collect more norther victims, and Harper showed up in my side of town. I haven't gone in as deep as illadvisedships yet XD
But at the end of the day, you imagine your F/O's however you want! Don't let anything stop you. Especially any insecurities you may have. It's all for you, and you can make it however you want it ^^
I have a very general ask to rattle off before I leave the house!! I've been revolving the idea of sending this in my mind for a few days, but I think that last post you reblogged is a sign that I should just do it XD Because it kind of relates to my questions... sorry if it seems disjointed, I'm sort of rushing to get it out of my system ^^
When you imagine anything with your F/Os, is it you you that you're picturing? Or like. An idealized version of yourself? Is anything about her different or is she just straight up *you*? I've had this image in my head for so long of someone who thinks like me, but looks and acts quite different - almost like an OC. I think I'm getting a bit better about this though, I've been working on making my Sim self and it's helping 😅😅
From looking through this blog, it seems like you usually imagine your F/Os with you in the real world? Do you ever imagine yourself in their universe? For me I almost always imagine myself as a character in their universe!
I'm still warming up to the idea of F/Os... but for as a long as I can remember I've had daydream scenarios with soooo many different characters over the years. But I always just considered them maladaptive daydream scenarios 🙈🙈🙈 I LOVE the enthusiasm you have for your F/Os, though!! <3
Marinerainbow or anyone else is welcome to share their thoughts too, but there's no pressure to do so of course :D
💛💕💛💕💛💕 I love this ask, its so interesting! ^^
First of all- @marinerainbow , what are your thoughts here? ^^
As for me: First of all I think with F/O stuff you can - of course, - be whatever the hell you wanna be!! If thats an idealised or just, plain, fictional version of yourself- ball!! ^^ For me I generally just imagine myself. Though, admittedly, a slightly more confident, and open version of myself XD
As for the w o r l d, I usually imagine- it depends on the day XD Here are the various worlds I imagine myself in with them XD I put them under the cut cuz it partly answers the question and its also just me waffling about my various ongoing fantasies 😅
All of them: Some weird in-between world set in London with Cruella. Somehow the other 3 live there too now in this one 😅
All of them: Variant of same in-between world except I live in Maine with Jim because I l o v e the idea of living near a lake or in the bush/woods or something- I swear, if I could live out in the sticks I'd never be anxious ^^ Usually in this one, Otis lives in the basement XD
All of them: Different variant of same in-between world except I just live in Aus this time and am upholding 4 different long distance relationships 🤣 XD
Jim: The Lake Placid universe. Yes, I imagine myself in the universe! ^^ I'm not a character in the story, though, I generally imagine I'm cursed or the multiverse glitched or something and I ended up dropped in the last fictional universe I watched on TV XD So I'm just there, knowing e x a c t l y what happens and when in this story but keeping my mouth sealed s h u t about it (*cough* while shooting my shot with Jim) XD
Jim (Variant): At the moment I'm playing with a variant of this one where a version of me does already exist in the Lake Placid universe when I get there- and she's a... shall we say... adult movie star XD 🤣 Its fun!
Otis: The H1000C universe. Same as the Lake Placid one above. I end up in this universe at Spaulding's petrol station with a friend from the real world (Who either knows the story or doesn't- both can be equally fun cuz I'm either freaking out with them or freaking out for the both of us XD) and get wrapped up in the story with the main victims while trying to get the hell out before Otis sees me cuz n o I don't wanna get m u r d e r e d thank you very much-
Any of them: Switcheroo. They get dumped in t h i s (o u r) universe/timeline. And I have to keep them hidden so no one recognises them as their actor in public.
Any of them: Switcheroo Variant. We both end up in a separate universe and have to work together to get the hell out. Catch? This universe already has a version of them (A different character by the same actor. For example if the focus F/O is Jim it could be the ANOES universe. Or if the focus F/O is Otis, it could be Texas Chainsaw Massacre! XD) and possibly a different version of me as well and we have to avoid meeting/making eye contact with these other versions in order to avoid a fault in the space time continuum or whatever 😅 (And also avoid other problems that might come along with meeting characters like Freddy Krueger or Inkubus or Chop Top Sawyer🙃)
So yes... I do like to use the real me in my F/O fantasies (feels more personal for me ^^) but its not always the real world XD Its not always their fictional world. A lot of the time its just random 😅 Its completely up to you individually what you do with your daydreaming! ^^ It is s o so individual and self indulgent.
I hope this helps you? Or was interesting? 😅😂 I wish you so much luck in your future F/O-ing! XD Its all good fun and it can be comforting too ^^ And I wanna hear all about it if you ever wanna gush! Here are your free gush tickets 🎫🎟🎫🎟🎫🎟🎫🎟🎫🎟 They're infinite and theirs no expiry date! ^^

Oh my god... XDD I literally read the first sentence you wrote and went 'i better go pee before i read this. its gonna make me laugh' XDD And it did XDDD
Ahhhh, I love this so much!!!! I need to send so many more Harper/2001 Maniacs sentence starters because you're so good at it!!!!!!!!! You've definitely put me in a Harper mood!! XDD
(Also I s w e a r your prompts are coming out today 😅 I just have the Cruella one to do left. And I CANT WAIT to do the Maggie and Hallie one also!!!! You got them just right, don't worry!)
Sorry I just came up with another one 😅 Just a funny one! XD You can take or leave this, obviously! ^^
Just as Harper was about to finally kiss you, the closed door flies open and your beloved mayor storms in- and, well, you have have always liked Buckman, but right now you just want to pull that damn eyepatch back hard and then let it go just so it slaps him in the face.
A little bit of Harper love for you XD And, obviously, Buckman being an absolute NUISENCE.
It's absolutely oka- MY MAN HARPER!!!! IT'S HIM!!!
Oh man, I've never written for him, I'm so nervous about this 😅 hopefully I get him right! And Buckman too!
I... Um.... Also went a bit overboard with this one... seven paragraphs sentences with this one... I have no excuse, you already know why 😅
~
"Harper! There's a fresh filly you need to-" Your mayor stopped dead in his tracks when he actually saw you two, holding each other close, nobody else here- except him now, and the both of you looking frustrated as all hell.
Yeah, it didn't take a genius to figure out what you two were trying to do.
"... Actually, I think I need to go see Ms. Boone now, check up on tonight's dinner and such-" The mayor, thankfully, decided to grant the two of you mercy, and left quickly while shutting the door and telling Harper to just go find him when he was done with his personal buisness.
"Oh my lord..." You groan while covering your face in embarrassment, missing how your lover shook his head but held a slightly amused smirk, "When will Granny teach him how to knock?
You look up to Harper when he chuckles, which allowed him to tilt your chin up more so you couldn't hide again; years of being Pleasent Valley's siren gave him experience in making you feel weak with just a simple look, "How 'bout we don't think about that right now? Let's just take our time."
Your browser furrowed in slight confusion, but you were also intrigued, "But doesn't the mayor need you right now?"
"He said he wanted me to find him after I'm done taking care of you~" His wolfish grin broadened as your face flushed, realizing what he was talking about, "He never set a time frame, why not take advantage of that~?"
~
Thank you for sending this!!! I loved it so much!!! ^^
I need all the water guns I can get my hands on right now...

Request page
I have decided to open up a request page here on Tumblr where you can see what kind of requests for fanfics I can write. Please submit these requests in the ‘Ask me anything‘ section.

25 Amazing Books by African-American Writers You Need to Read
Black History Month gives us 28 days to honor African Americans and the ever-expanding contributions they make to culture. Literature in particular has been a space for black authors to tell their stories authentically, and bookworms seeking good reads can choose from an array of fiction, poetry, historical texts, essays, and memoirs. From literary icons to fresh, buzzworthy talent, we’re highlighting 25 books by African-American authors you should add to your reading list today.
1. KINDRED // OCTAVIA BUTLER
Background: iStock. Book cover: Amazon.
Octavia Butler’s Kindred (1979) is one of a string of novels she penned centering black female protagonists, which was unprecedented in a white-male dominated science and speculative fiction space. This story centers Dana, a young writer in 1970s Los Angeles, who is unexpectedly whisked away to the 19th century antebellum South where she saves the life of Rufus Weylin, the son of a plantation owner. When Dana’s white husband—initially suspicious of her claims—is transported back in time with her, complicated circumstances follow since interracial marriage was considered illegal in America until 1967. To paint an accurate picture of the slavery era, Butler told In Motion Magazine in 2004, she studied slave narratives and books by the wives of plantation owners.
2. HUNGER: A MEMOIR OF (MY) BODY // ROXANE GAY
Background: iStock. Book cover: Amazon.
In the second entry of her divulging 2017 memoir Hunger, Roxane Gay reveals, “… this is a book about disappearing and being lost and wanting so very much, wanting to be seen and understood.” The New York Times best-selling author pinpoints deep-seated emotions from a string of experiences, such as an anxious visit to a doctor’s office concerning gastric bypass surgery and turning to food to cope with a boy raping her when she was a girl. In six powerful parts, the daughter of Haitian immigrants and National Book Award finalist reclaims the space necessary to document her truth—and uses that space to come out of the shadows she had once intentionally tried to hide in.
3. THE FIRE NEXT TIME // JAMES BALDWIN
Background: iStock. Book cover: Amazon.
James Baldwin is a key figure among the great thinkers of the 20th century for his long range of criticism about literature, film, culture, and revelations on race in America. One of his most widely known literary contributions was his 1963 book The Fire Next Time, a text featuring two essays: one a letter to his 14-year-old nephew, in which he encourages him not to give in to racist ideas that blackness makes him lesser. The second essay, “Down At The Cross,” takes the reader back to Baldwin’s childhood in Harlem as he details conditions of poverty, his struggle with religious authorities, and his relationship with his father.
4. BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME // TA-NEHISI COATES
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Penguin Random House.
After re-reading James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, Ta-Nehisi Coates was inspired to write a book-long essay to his teenage son about being black in America and forewarns him of the plight that comes with facing white supremacy. The result was the 2015 National Book Award-winning Between the World and Me. New York magazine reported that after reading, Toni Morrison wrote, “I’ve been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates.” Throughout the book, Coates recounts witnessing violence in “the streets” and police brutality growing up in Baltimore, his time studying at historically black Howard University, and asks the hard questions about the past and future of race in America.
5. INVISIBLE MAN // RALPH ELLISON
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Ralph Ellison’s 1952 classic Invisible Man follows one African-American man’s quest for identity during the 1920s and 1930s—and decades later, this is a struggle that many continue to encounter. Because of racism, the unnamed protagonist, known as “Invisible Man,” does not feel seen by society and narrates the reader through a series of unfortunate and fortunate events to fit in while living in the South and later in Harlem, New York City. In 1953, Invisible Man was awarded the National Book Award, making Ellison the first African-American author to receive the prestigious honor for fiction [PDF].
6. BELOVED // TONI MORRISON
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1987 novel Beloved puts Sethe, a former slave in 1873 Cincinnati, Ohio, in contact with the supernatural. Before becoming a freed woman, Sethe attempted to kill her children to save them from a life of enslavement. While her sons and one daughter survived, her infant daughter, “Beloved,” died. Sethe’s family becomes haunted by a spirit believed to be Beloved, and Morrison provides a layered portrayal of the plight of post-slavery black life with a magical surrealism edge as Sethe learns she must confront her repressed memories of trauma and her past life in bondage.
7. ALL ABOUT LOVE: NEW VISIONS // BELL HOOKS
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Goodreads.
In the 2000 book All About Love, feminist scholar Bell Hooks grapples with how people are commonly socialized to perceive love in modern society. She uses a range of examples to delve into the topic, from her personal childhood and dating reflections, to popular culture references. This is a powerful essential text that calls on humans to revise a new, healthier blueprint for love, free of patriarchal gender limitations and dominating behaviors that don’t serve mankind’s emotional needs.
8. THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X // MALCOLM X, ALEX HALEY
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
In 1963, Malcolm X would drive from his home Harlem to author Alex Haley’s apartment down in New York’s Greenwich Village to collaborate on his autobiography. Unfortunately, the minister and activist didn’t live to see it in print—The Autobiography of Malcolm X was published in 1965, not long after his assassination in February of that year. The books chronicles the many lessons the young Malcolm (born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska) learned from witnessing his parents’ struggles with racism during his childhood; to his troubled young adulthood with drugs and incarceration; and his later evolving into one of the most iconic voices in the movement for black liberation.
9. THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD // ZORA NEALE HURSTON
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Harper Perennial.
During Zora Neale Hurston’s career, she was more concerned with writing about the lives of African Americans in an authentic way that uplifted their existence, rather than focus on their traumas. Her most celebrated work, 1937’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an example of this philosophy and brings to light Janie Mae Crawford, a middle-aged woman in Florida, who details lessons she learned about love and finding herself after three marriages. Hurston used black southern dialect in the characters’ dialogue, as to proudly represent their voices and manner.
10. THE NEW JIM CROW: MASS INCARCERATION IN THE AGE OF COLORBLINDNESS // MICHELLE ALEXANDER
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
The Jim Crow laws of the 19th and 20th century were intended to marginalize black Americans during the Reconstruction period who were establishing their own businesses, entering the labor system, and running for office. Although a series of anti-discrimination rulings, such as Brown vs. Board of Education and the Voting Rights Act, were passed during the Civil Rights Movement, Michelle Alexander’s 2010 book argues that mass incarceration is the new Jim Crow impacting black American lives, especially black men. In the text, Alexander explores how the war on drugs, piloted by the Ronald Reagan administration, created a system in which black Americans were stripped of their rights after serving time for nonviolent drug crimes.
11. SISTER OUTSIDER: ESSAYS AND SPEECHES // AUDRE LORDE
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Penguin Random House.
Originally published in 1984, Sister Outsider is an anthology of 15 essays and speeches written by lesbian feminist writer and poet Audre Lorde. The titles of her works are as intriguing as the content is eye-opening. For example: “Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power,” examines the way people, especially women, lose when they block the erotic—or deep passion—from their work and while exploring their spiritual and political desires. In “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House,” Lorde explains how feminism fails by leaving out the voices of black women, queer women, and poor women—which are ideas that are still shaping conversations within feminism today.
12. THE AUDACITY OF HOPE: THOUGHTS ON RECLAIMING THE AMERICAN DREAM // BARACK OBAMA
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Canongate Books
Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope was his second book and the No. 1 New York Times bestseller when it was released in the fall of 2006. The title was derived from a sermon he heard by Pastor Jeremiah Wright called “The Audacity to Hope.” It was also the title of the keynote speech the then-Illinois State Senator gave at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Before becoming the 44th president of the United States, Obama’s Audacity of Hope outlined his optimistic vision to bridge political parties so that the government could better serve the American people’s needs.
13. THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS: THE EPIC STORY OF AMERICA’S GREAT MIGRATION // ISABEL WILKERSON
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Penguin Random House.
During the Great Migration, millions of African Americans departed the Southern states to Northern and Western cities to escape Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and the failing sharecropping system. Isabel Wilkerson, the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism, documented these movements in her 2010 book, which involved 15 years of research and interviews with 1200 people. The book highlights the stories of three individuals and their journeys from Florida to New York City, Mississippi to Chicago, and Louisiana to Los Angeles. Wilkerson’s excellent and in-depth documentation won her a National Book Critics Circle Award for the nonfiction work.
14. BROWN GIRL DREAMING // JACQUELINE WOODSON
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Penguin Random House.
Jacqueline Woodson’s children’s books and YA novels are inspired by her desire to highlight the lives of communities of color—narratives she felt were missing from the literature landscape. In her 2014 National Book Award-winning autobiography, Brown Girl Dreaming, Woodson uses her own childhood story in verse form, to fill those representation voids. The author came of age during the Civil Rights Movement and subsequently the Black Power Movement, and lived between the laid-back lifestyle of South Carolina and the fast-paced New York City. Through her work, we are reminded of how family and community play a role in helping individuals persevere through life’s trials.
15. REDEFINING REALNESS: MY PATH TO WOMANHOOD, IDENTITY, LOVE & SO MUCH MORE // JANET MOCK
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Janet Mock, an African-American and Hawaiian transgender activist and writer, began her career in media as a staff editor at People. In 2011, Mock decided to share her story with the world and came out as a transgender woman in a Marie Claire article, and after landing a book deal, she released this New York Times bestselling memoir in 2014. Mock used her platform to speak in full about her upbringing as a young girl of color in poverty and identifying as transgender—a courageous move that set her on a path to being an inspiring voice for those facing difficulty in accepting their identity.
16. FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES // CHARLES M. BLOW
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
In his 2014 memoir Fire Shut Up in My Bones, New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow opens up about growing up in a segregated Louisiana town during the 1970s as the youngest of five brothers. In 12 chapters, Blow offers an extensive look at his path to overcoming the odds of poverty, the trauma of being a victim of childhood rape, and his gradual understanding his bi-sexuality. Although these are hard truths to tell, Blow told NPR in 2014, he wrote this book especially for those who are going through similar experiences and need to know their lives are still worth living, despite their painful circumstances.
17. I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS // MAYA ANGELOU
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
If you read anything by the late, great, prophetic poet Maya Angelou, her 1969 I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings should be at the top of your list: It provides an in-depth look at the obstacles that shaped her early life. Angelou’s childhood and teenage years were nomadic, as her separated parents moved her and her brother from rural Arkansas to St. Louis, Missouri, and eventually to California, where at different times she lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland. Besides the blatant racism she saw unfold around her in the South, a young Maya also faced childhood rape, and as a teen, homelessness and pregnancy. Angelou, who was at first reluctant to write the book, achieved much success with the text as she became the first African-American woman to have a non-fiction bestseller.
18. BABEL-17 // SAMUEL R. DELANY
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
In 2015, Samuel R. Delany told The Nation that when he first began attending science fiction conferences in the 1960s, he was one of only a few black writers and enthusiasts present. Over the years, with his contributions and the work of others like Octavia Butler, whom he mentored, he opened doors for black writers in the genre. If you’re looking for a sci-fi thriller taking place in space and centering a woman leader protagonist, Delany’s 1967 Nebula Award-winning Babel-17 is the one. Rydra Wong, a spaceship captain, is intrigued by a mysterious language called Babel-17 that has the power to alter a person’s perception of themselves and others, and possibly brainwash her to betray her government.
19. SPLAY ANTHEM // NATHANIEL MACKEY
Background: iStock. Book Cover: New Directions Publishing.
Readers of Nathaniel Mackey’s poetry are often intrigued by his ability to merge the worlds of music (particularly jazz) and poetry to create soul-grabbing rhythmic prose. Splay Anthem is a masterful work exhibiting his style, and the 2006 collection includes two poems Mackey had been writing for more than 20 years: “Song of the Andoumboulou,” a ritual funeral song from the Dogon people of modern-day Mali; and “Mu.” Splay Anthem is woven into three sections, “Braid,” “Fray,” and “Nub,” in which two characters travel through space and time and whose final destinations are unclear. Mackey’s nonlinear form is deliberate: “There’s a lot of emphasis on movement in the poems, and there’s a lot of questions about ultimate arrival, about whether there is such a state or place,” he said in an excerpt from A Community Writing Itself: Conversations with Vanguard Writers of the Bay Area.
20. THE HATE U GIVE // ANGIE THOMAS
Background: iStock. Book Cover: HarperCollins.
Angie Thomas is part of a new crop of African-American authors bringing fresh new storytelling to bookshelves near you. Her 2017 debut young adult novel, The Hate U Give, was inspired by the protests of the Black Lives Matter movement. It follows Starr Carter, a 16-year-old who has witnessed the police-involved shooting of her best friend Khalil. The book, which topped the New York Times bestseller chart, is a timely fictional tale which humanizes the voices behind one of the largest movements in present times.
21. NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER // LANGSTON HUGHES
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Penguin Random House.
Take it back to where the Harlem Renaissance legend Langston Hughes began his novelistic bibliography. In 1930’s Not Without Laughter, Sandy Rogers is an African-American boy growing up in Kansas during the ’30s—a story loosely based on Hughes’s own experiences living in Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas. Hughes vividly paints his characters based on the “typical Negro family in the Middle West” he grew up around, he explained in his autobiography The Big Sea. In this way, Hughes paved the way for more storytelling about black life outside of urban big city settings.
22. SALVAGE THE BONES // JESMYN WARD
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Jesmyn Ward’s 2011 novel Salvage the Bones merges fiction with her real life experience surviving Hurricane Katrina as a native of a rural Mississippi town. Ward tells a new story through the eyes of Esch, a pregnant teenage girl who lives in poverty with her three brothers and a father who is battling alcoholism, in a fictional town called Bois Sauvage. Through this National Book Award-winning tale, Ward writes an emotionally intense and deep account about a family who must find a way to overcome differences and stick together to survive the passing storm.
23. DON’T CALL US DEAD // DANEZ SMITH
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Don’t Call Us Dead is a cathartic series of poems that imagine an afterlife where black men can fully be themselves. Danez Smith’s poignant words take heartbreaking imagery of violence upon the bodies of black men, and juxtapose them with scenes of a new plane, one that is much better than the existence they lived before. Upon arrival, it’s a celebration, as men and boys are embraced by their fellow brothers and are able to truly experience being “alive.” Smith’s prose sticks, and you will think more deeply about the delicacy of life and death, long after you’ve put the book back on the shelf.
24. THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD // COLSON WHITEHEAD
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
Colson Whitehead brings a bit of fantasy to historical fiction in his 2016 novel The Underground Railroad. Historically, the underground railroad was a network of safe houses for runaways on their journey to reaching the freed states. But Whitehead invents a literal secret underground railroad with real tracks and trains in his novel. This system takes his main character, Cora, a woman who escaped a Georgia plantation, to different states and stops. Along her journey, she faces a new set of horrific hurdles that could hold her back from obtaining freedom.
25. DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS // WALTER MOSLEY
Background: iStock. Book Cover: Amazon.
If you’re into mystery but don’t know Walter Mosley, it’s time to catch up. The crime-fiction author has published more than 40 books, with his Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins series being his most popular. Mosley’s 1990 debut (and Easy’s debut as well) Devil in a Blue Dress takes the reader to 1940s Watts, a Los Angeles neighborhood where we are first introduced to Easy, who has recently relocated to the City of Angels after losing his job in Houston. He finds a new line of work as a detective when a man at a bar wants him to track down a woman named Daphne Monet.
