Jamaica - Commemorative of the Extinction of Slavery

Adolphe Duperly’s lithograph titled Commemorative of the Extinction of Slavery on the First of August 1838 (fig. I.1) records the apparent blaze of jubilation with which the city of Kingston inaugurated the period discussed in this book: the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). The slow and painful process of emancipation had finally brought an end to slavery, the condition of most Jamaicans for the previous two centuries. By historical coincidence, emancipation occurred at the beginning of the reign of a monarch almost five thousand miles away.

Victoria’s special status in the Jamaican imaginary is recalled in a Bruckins song performed in 1887, on the fiftieth anniversary of her accession:

Jubalee, jubalee This is the year of jubalee Augus’ mornin’ come again (×2) Augus’ mornin’ come again This is the year of jubalee Queen Victoria give we free.2

Victoria, queen of a worldwide empire that had included Jamaica since 1655, had been crowned just a month earlier, on June 28, 1838.1 Victoria’s name would become identified with the dominant ideologies, social codes, and aesthetic tastes of the second half of the nineteenth century, even beyond the wide reach of her titular domain.

The long period of her reign has attained the status of a historical unit principally because of the emblematic character of the Queen herself. Victoria was to be remembered by black Jamaicans as the Queen who set them free, despite enslaved Jamaicans’ long history of resistance (most recently the Christmas rebellions of 1831–1832) that had precipitated the passing of the Emancipation Act and the fact that the legislation predated her reign

Mary I's Fight For The Throne

Deep in preparations to fight, Mary orders a complete book of all the ordnance in camp made 1, as well as more tools from the surrounding area to build trenches against a cavalry charge. 2

George Howard arrives from the Earl of Warwick's camp, and likely informs them of Sawston Hall being burnt. According to legend, Mary is alleged to have said upon hearing the news "Let it blaze; I will build Huddlestone a better." 6 True or not, Huddlestone did later receive a grant of stone from Cambridge castle to rebuild his house, one which still bears the date 1557. 7

Anyone taking him, if a noble and peer of the realm, to have one thousand pounds of land in fee; if a knight, five hundred pounds in lands, with honour and advancement to nobility; if a gentleman under the degree of knight, five hundred marks of land in fee and the degree of a knight; if a yeoman, 100 pounds of land in fee and the degree of a squire. 8

The Imperial ambassadors hear from the man they sent to follow Northumberland that he has "about 1,000 horse, 3,000 foot, 12 pieces of artillery, such as cannons and double-cannons and thirty cart-loads of ammunition" 13 but Mary "appears to be stronger than the Duke, and every day we hear people muttering against him and preparing to declare for her." 14

She has 47 cannons and her deck as 14 guns, which means almost no one can oppose my firepower. It is to the point where locals give people warnings about me. Well one day five gunships came down to collect the bounty on me and sink my ship. They thought they were being clever by sneaking in at night and surrounding me. All they did was give eachother poor visibility and worries about friendly fire that I did not share. So, after they made their little formation I sent them a message in the form of a cannonball telling them they weren't as sneaky as they thought and started hollering the warning the locals give about me from my helm.

Now the moon was gone that night so all was pitch-dark, but the cannonfire from the lot of us was so tremendous that you could see as if it were day. By dawn, we had sank all five ships, but my own vessel was not looking so good, I was one of the few survivors left aboard my shattered and burning ship, most had left already. So I turned to the nearest shore laughing and hollering for god to just try and strike me down before she reached ground.
