Henchwomen Through the Ages
The "ages" of comics are not hard and fast things, and even comic book historians argue where they begin and end. They're more like moods than time periods, and your standard game of Henchwoman RPG will probably be set in a vague time period that could be anywhere from the thirties to today with an overall Silver Age mood. Still, let's take a look at how the roll of the Henchwoman has evolved, shall we?
Goldie is a gun-toting, cigar-chomping bank robber in victory rolls and a bullet bra. She's not called a henchwoman- she's called "Look out, that broad has a grenade!" She's loyal to the boss despite his dumb penny gimmick, but if he ever finked on her in court, he wouldn't live to see the sunrise. There's no Henchwomen's Union for her to join yet, but she's provided muscle for plenty of mob-backed unions. Goldie can't afford to be soft on heroes since they'd be just as happy to throw her off a roof as to arrest her, but she might be wooed by an appeal to patriotism- she ain't no Nazi rat! Her hobbies include matinee shows, swing dancing, and blasting coppers.
Sylvia is a competitive surfer and was a cocktail waitress until they fired her for slapping too many customers. Thanks to the newly formed Henchwomen's Union, she's treated much better by her current job, which usually involves crashing parties to steal themed jewelry. She and the heroes she fights have an understanding- they'll never be rough with her, and she won't check up on them after putting them in a death trap to see if they've died. On her off hours, she can go dancing in the same outfit she worked in- a silver jumpsuit, gogo boots and a purely decorative motorcycle helmet.
Brawny is a member of the Sisterhood of Wicked Witches, and she fights for a cause- or rather, several causes. These range from the reasonable (Save the whales!) to the less reasonable (A free ray gun for every child!) The Henchwomen's Union is strong enough to get her good pay, so many of her problems are philosophical- is she a good guy or a bad guy, and what do good and bad even mean? Brawny has to be a bit more careful than she would have been ten years ago, since death may well stick- but that also means she might really kill a hero, at least for a while, and that's what matters!
Tenebra prefers to be called a Dark Muse, a member of a vampire circle dedicated to bringing art to life, painted in colors of blood. Her eyeliner is swirly and her gowns are velvet, and she wears them onstage in her sideline darkwave band. Tenebra arranges her crimes in accordance with pre-raphaelite imagery, with victims displayed in heartbreakingly beautiful and mythologically-influenced poses. Her boss may technically be the Queen of the Vampires, and she may have a card with the Henchwomen's Union, but her true loyalty is to art itself.
Ferra is a mercenary with a separate pouch for each type of bullet, and she has a lot of types of bullet. Her stilettos are tall but her hair is taller, and she can strike intimidating poses that would break a normal person's back. The Henchwomen's Union had its own back broken by the bosses, and is now more of informal underground thing, but it still hooks her up with real deal bad guys. She'll kill without a second thought for her boss, but she's only one bad day away from turning her gun on him. It might even happen accidentally, since he and the heroes dress exactly the same. Ferra somehow has a heavy metal soundtrack even when there's no music playing.
Ally got a degree in psychology but until she can afford grad school, she gigs as a henchwoman. Her bosses are sillicon valley dickheads, but the first one to offer her real benefits will have her loyalty for life. Thanks to the resurgence of the Henchwomen's Union, Ally gets to wear big stompy boots instead of high heels, but she still has to wear a big day-glo logo on her leather jacket that might as well be a target sign. Her hobbies include pop culture conventions, smoking weed and credit card fraud.

ugh my mind has been all over the place today. yesterday i went to see Wicked for the first time in 11 years. it was my childhood favourite musical, and it still is. saying it was magical was an understatement, and i cried at the end. it was a fantastic experience.
BUT. almost the second it was done i just felt… empty. like, all of that joy i felt before and during the show was just drained out of me. for the past 24 hours i’ve had the soundtrack stuck in my head (naturally) but every time i think about it i just feel this intense wave of sadness and trauma. i’ve just been blasting other music, watching netflix and youtube to try and drown out any thoughts of the musical because i just associate it so heavily with my childhood.
it’s been 3 years since i last spoke to my mum. i can’t even call her an ab*ser because every day i feel more and more like i made it all up and i overreacted by cutting her off. but even still, just the mere fucking thought of a musical that i saw yesterday and enjoyed so much makes me panic and cry.
why can’t i just enjoy one fucking thing?

For some reason, Pal and I watched Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 2023-2024 haute couture collection (from 5 July) on YouTube recently. Recommended! Top tip: massive, jaggedly pointed shoulders and Wicked Witch of the West-style shoes are going to be big! Against a soundtrack of full blast, soaring opera music, haunted-looking and severely etched models (including veteran 1990s supermodels Eva Herzigova and Amber Valletta) stalked the runway with perfectly judged dour, miserable expressions. Utterly inscrutable and blasé behind her signature dark shades, from the front row Anna Wintour occasionally deigned to glance up as they passed. I gasped with delight when - as Vogue put it - “Isabelle Huppert came out in a heavily-pailletted full-skirted black dress like some gothic Infanta.” French art cinema’s queen of perversion truly understood the assignment, looking vaguely traumatized and benumbed as if she’d just stepped out of a particularly harrowing scene from The Piano Teacher or Elle. Austere fashion porn at its best!

I think I am gonna make a Media thread to share what I’ve played/watched this year. It looks like a fun thing to do! (Copied from my Twitter thread)
Here’s what I experienced in 2023
Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the first sin:
While souls games tend to be frustrating for me, they are also brilliant experiences, and I had a ton of fun with DS2! The Halbert in this game specifically is my favorite weapon in the entire series as of rn.
Neon White:
I hope everyone finds a game that fits their taste as well as Neon White fits mine. One of my new favorite games with such a satisfying sense of flow and rhythm that I couldn’t put it down till I got a gold medal on every stage.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish:
I loved the TV show they did so I wasn’t totally surprised but this exceeded my expectations. Gorgeous art style, fluid animation, compelling characters, and the most intimidating animated movie villain in a long time make this a winner in my book!
Bocchi the Rock Season 1:
IT’S SO CUTE AND FUN OMG!!!! A really heartfelt and well realized story with an absolute banger soundtrack. I loved every single character and every single episode so much, it’s truly an amazing show!
Elden Ring:
This game is scary in how good it is. It’s massive, intensely difficult, detailed, and beautifully crafted. It’s so much that I’m inclined to say it’s too much. But too much of a masterpiece is still a masterpiece. I’m carrying this victory with me for a long time.
Transistor:
Holy wow, I haven’t been surprised by a game like this in awhile! It’s an extremely well designed tactical action game with an unconventional narrative structure and absolutely killer visuals and music. I’ll definitely consider returning for another run later on!
Summer Wars:
An absolute rollercoaster of a movie. I really enjoyed the family dynamic and the different ways the story unfolded. It wasn’t what I expected at all and I think it was better for it. The visual design is incredible too! It’s very pleasant to look at. A fun movie!!
Journey:
I’ve rarely seen a game so perfectly titled. It was a true journey. It was an experience that was unique to me and my own playthrough. That’s what I think is truly special about this game. The people you meet and the way you progress while linear is truly your own
John Wick 4:
Absolutely lives up to the quality of this series. John wick continues to impress me with its action choreography and cinematography. This entry specifically has a strong set of side characters, some excellent music compositions, and amazing settings. Loved this one!
Portal 2 (Co-op):
I played the single player years ago but I finally got to finish the co-op campaign and it was a blast!!! Portal is one of if not the most satisfying puzzle games I’ve played. Reminds me how much of a classic this one is. Shoutout to my cousin for joining me!
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves:
A really enjoyable action comedy movie! It did a good job capturing the dynamic of a dnd party. A super fun time with genuine humor, great performances all around, and the appropriate amount of chaos for a movie in the dnd universe.
The Super Mario Bros Movie:
A solid film! The Music stole the show for me, Peach and Bowser were huge highlights and Luigi and Toad had great performances too! I was disappointed by the Kongs voices but it’s a film with a lot of love for the series in there! Peach is great btw💕
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom :
This game somehow impresses today in the same way botw does. The improvements rocket this game into the stratosphere. While i suffered the same fatigue I did with Elden ring at the end, I also found myself in awe almost the entire time
Spider Man: Across the Spiderverse :
I um, don’t know what to say. Visual feast, extremely compelling plot, character work that hit so so hard, an animated movie the likes of which I’ve never seen. Just incredible
Barbie Movie:
It was so incredibly fun. I had a good few laughs and it had really compelling characters. Very appropriately campy with the depth to back up the camp. A well made film
Cassette Beasts:
What a fantastic game. It recaptured the magic I haven’t felt since playing Pokémon platinum for the first time. It’s battle system is so engaging, story filled with mystery, characters absolutely lovely, and a world that is just the right size for exploring. 💕

I saw John Wick 4 last night and it was an absolute blast. One of if not my favorite action movie of all time (rivaling Die Hard). The whole scene in Paris with the radio was awesome, but my favorite scene was definitely the Dragon’s Breath. This movie satisfied my want for a Hotline Miami movie, especially with that soundtrack. John Wick will go down as my generation’s action man, like how you old folk had John Rambo and McClane. Only wish it would’ve lasted longer, but I’m glad it wasn’t oversaturated.
The John Wick series is definitely going down as one of the greatest action epics of all time and I’m glad I was able to be there for it.
9/10
I can’t see someone fall down stairs anymore after that game.

An Enchanting Evening at the West End: Experiencing Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre, London
I have been a theatre geek ever since I heard Idina Menzel belt her heart out to "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked”, and when I blasted the "Heathers" soundtrack through my speakers. I am a great admirer of various musical genres, including "Mean Girls," "The Lion King," and "Annie," but one musical that holds a special place in my heart is the heartwarming tale about a certain girl who lives in the Greek Islands with her single mother, "Mamma Mia."
Part of the reason why I think this musical stands out to me so much is because of the unforgettable soundtrack. The musical cleverly adds fresh emotional levels to the plot by incorporating ABBA's greatest tunes into the narrative. Classics like “Honey, Honey,” “Super Trouper,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “Mamma Mia” aren't just acts; they play important roles in the lives of the characters.
I have been a great fan of ABBA ever since my mother introduced me to the band when I was 12. We have been blasting their songs ever since. Either it is in the car, the kitchen, or even in the karaoke booth. One of ABBA’s timeless hits, “Dancing Queen,” has been one of our go-to karaoke songs. Their songs make our mother-daughter bond even stronger.
Therefore, when I found out that my family was going to London on my school holiday, I immediately asked them if we could book tickets to watch Mamma Mia! in the West End at the Novello Theatre, London. Naturally, my ABBA enthusiast mother answered "yes"!
London's West End is the epitome of theatre magic, where legendary shows are brought to life. The Novello Theatre is a classic London institution with a long history, situated in the bustling Covent Garden district. As soon as I walked inside, the atmosphere made it obvious this place was the perfect home for Mamma Mia! because its charm adds to the warmth and nostalgia that the music exudes.
Watching the musical unfold at the Novello Theatre brings the story to life in ways that feel immediate and electric. The actors are vibrant, each fully embodying their characters’ quirks and emotions. The audience is drawn in by the emotional depth with which these multi-talented stars conveyed the stories of their characters. It's exciting to hear these songs played live at the Novello Theatre. Moments of sheer ecstasy are created by the dynamic staging, lively dance, and powerful singing.
Attending Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre is not just about seeing a musical; it's about being a part of an experience that makes you smile long after the last curtain rises. It is a must-see for anybody visiting the West End because of the compelling tale, well-known music, and outstanding performances in one of the most exquisite theatres in all of London.
If I were lucky enough to have the option to never leave this amazing theatre, I would. For some reason, when I was inside, I forgot all of my problems and uncertainties. I felt like I was Sophie, a girl living a carefree life on a beautiful island in Greek and sporadically belting out ABBA songs as the crowd joined her in choreographed dances throughout the day.
Nothing could make me feel as elated as I am when I’m watching this spectacular musical. The soundtrack, films, ambience, characters, and lessons told by “Mamma Mia!” are truly exceptional. This indicates that music really does unite people, regardless of who they are or where they are from. As long as they have the same amount of love and passion, we will always be connected through music. Thus, while I'm writing this, I truly want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude, as I would like to say how thankful I am to Mamma Mia, ABBA, and most of all, I would like to say “Thank You for the Music.”

What is the story of the Zuma game?
Zuma is a popular puzzle video game that was developed by PopCap Games and released in 2003. It quickly gained popularity due to its simple yet addictive gameplay, colorful graphics, and catchy soundtrack. marble blast In the game, players control a frog-like creature that shoots colored balls from its mouth to match groups of three or more same-colored balls before they reach the end of a winding track. The game features several levels, each with its own unique design and difficulty, and a variety of power-ups and bonuses to help players progress.
The storyline of Zuma is relatively simple and straightforward, but it provides a backdrop for the game's action and adds a sense of adventure and mystery to the gameplay. The game is set in a mythical world inspired by ancient South American civilizations, where the player assumes the role of the frog idol who is tasked with preventing evil spirits from reaching the sacred temple at the end of each level.
The game's story begins with a legend that tells of an ancient civilization that worshipped a powerful frog god. The god was said to possess magical powers that allowed it to control the elements of nature and bring balance to the world. The people of the civilization built a magnificent temple in honor of the frog god, where they would offer sacrifices and hold ceremonies to appease it.
However, one day, a group of evil spirits appeared and began to wreak havoc on the land. They were led by a wicked sorcerer who sought to conquer the world and enslave its inhabitants. The frog god was unable to stop them on its own, so it chose a champion to undertake a quest to stop the evil spirits and restore peace to the world.
That champion is the player's character, the frog idol. The frog idol is a magical creature that possesses the same powers as the frog god. It is summoned by the god to embark on a journey to defeat the evil spirits and save the world. The frog idol is guided by the spirit of a wise old shaman who provides advice and encouragement throughout the game.
The game consists of multiple levels, each of which takes place in a different location and presents a unique challenge. The levels are divided into several zones, and the player must complete each zone by clearing a certain number of balls from the track. The balls are arranged in a long chain that winds around the level, and the player must shoot balls from the frog's mouth to match three or more of the same color. Matching balls causes them to disappear, and the chain shortens as a result. The player must clear the entire chain before it reaches the end of the track, or they lose a life.

Do you have any recommendations for musical soundtracks that are good to listen to without the context of the actual play? At my job I'm often doing something on my own for a couple hours and blasting a musical is a great companion. I found Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton and Six really enjoyable but Dear Evan Hansen and Wicked less so... It's not about the kind of musical, more about being able to kinda follow the narrative from the songs alone + not having a too repetetive score (again not with reprises or stuff but more too little variation in the song style? This was my problem with DEH). I've got Beetlejuice, Cats, Book of Mormon and Hadestown queued up, but I was wondering if you've got any further recs for musicals where you think just the soundtrack is a good experience?
anything sung through should be good for that, some I like off the top of my head are jesus christ superstar, falsettos, and natasha pierre and the great comet of 1812. the lightning thief isn't sung through but most of the plot is in song and there's some style variation, ghost quartet is sung through but does kind of need full attention, I thiiink something rotten is understandable on first listen though don't quote me on that, and you get about the first 3/4 of be more chill just through the songs but then some gaps start showing up.

While looking for something to watch on Prime, a certain synopsis caught my eye...
"A loser whose life is passing him by accidentally stumbles into a secret underground self-help group for serial killers “
The characters, the setting, the soundtrack, the pacing, everything in this movie is a blast! Everything except the script... Not to go down the rabbit hole on the writing of the film, let’s just say the script can be wicked corny at times.
Looking back at the characters, and they how reflect on the film itself, they’re an obvious homage to the genre and other noteworthy characters and franchises within it. The chaos that just about every damn person in this film embarks in is a pretty fun ride. (If you can get over that cornball script, that is.)
There’s worse ways you can spend just over an hour and a half of your time, so why not check out this pleasantly made horror comedy?
⭐🌟⭐
3 outta 5 stars.
Engaging and delightfully silly. Look it up. 😉

Birds of Prey was SO good and you should definitely see it!
A few random (moderately-spoilery) thoughts:
The opening animation was fabulous! Given that Harley was created not in the comics but in the 90s Timmverse Batman Animated show, this was totally appropriate and an awesome homage to her origins.
Black Canary, OMFG I loved her. Gorgeous, tough, and compassionate.... she was easily the most generous soul in the group and seeing that come in a sexy badass package was just *chef's kiss*
HUNTRESS! I know Helena Bertinelli is considered a fairly minor character in the DC universe but I've always loved her because of this book I picked up back in the day:
I really liked the penciler, Cliff Richards, whom I discovered because he also did the art for the Pride & Prejudice & Zombies graphic novel (Check that out too). Anyway, I adore Huntress in every incarnation (she was also great in Arrow!) but this might be my favorite. Casting her as the straight-man (so to speak) in this zany crew was a masterstroke and the dialogue with her had me in stitches. Like Canary, she was also smokin hot.
I'm perfectly fine with the approach to Cassandra Cain's character. I'm not super-familiar with her comics incarnation but she's a total blast (pun intended) in this movie!
EWAN MCGREGOR I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! Suuuuuuch a good villain, you guys. Very scary and yet you know he's going down by the end. A sheer delight.
The ACTION. Hubs told me it's the same stunt coordinator as John Wick and you can tell! Really excellent fight scenes.... they're hard-hitting and scary yet funny, paced well but without that stupid shaky-cam.... you can follow every single step of the fight, even in group scenes. Beautifully shot and edited, and it looked like the use of stunt doubles was surprisingly limited.
On a related note, hubs also said "some people" have been complaining that the movie is so violent and gory, and.... honestly it's not any moreso than any other standard action film? In fact it doesn't nearly approach the level of Deadpool, IMO. I can't help but wonder if the uncharacteristic discomfort with violence in an action movie is because it's nearly all men being the victims of violence perpetrated by female protagonists. I mean, there are A LOT of men losing limbs or breaking bones or getting whacked in the nuts by our heroines in this movie. That's bound to make some people uncomfortable, even if they'd normally not bat an eye at far worse levels of onscreen violence.
Harley's arc was so interesting to me because whereas the story sets her up to learn to stand on her own (the "a harlequin is nothing without a master" speech is perfect), what she ACTUALLY learns by the end of the film is not to rely only on herself, but to rely on BETTER people who will support her. Whereas most stories might feature the protagonist becoming the sole hero and saving the day alone, Harley learns that dependence is not a weakness, it just matters on WHOM you depend. I'll have to dig into it later but I would bet anything that this movie maps to Maureen Murdock's Heroine's Journey.
The soundtrack is freaking perfect and I will be purchasing it ASAP to rock out to on my commute for the foreseeable future.
Aaaanyway, I have zero complaints about this movie and I would absolutely see it again! Go, and take your friends!
