hi sorry that this took me. FOREVER. i didn't have time to answer the ask at first then i did it halfway and didn't have time again and i promise you this ask has been hounding me (hah hah) since the day it appeared in my inbox but i never seemed to be able to make the time to reply to it asfjdfjfd anyway! here it is now :')

ok im basing the idea of hunting dog = jopson and mountain/working dog = little on their respective personalities, the way they seem to think and how they react to specific circumstances. and slightly on their physiques as presented in the series but that's of minor importance. ofc both of them are loyal and listen well to superiors - to one man in particular, which is fairly common among dog breeds as well (i.e. whoever trained them), so that's not necessarily distinctive, but it does ofc make them dog-coded in general. but there are many many ways in which to be dog-coded and they're very different abt it so!

why i think jopson is more hunting dog coded is bc he is extremely competent, but quietly so, not noticeable until it becomes necessary. he's very skilled at providing specific information about the crew and the general goings-on around terror to crozier, and he becomes more focused in highly tense situations - in fact these are moments where he specifically stands out for how well-suited he seems to the task. and he is not aggressive, but there is definitely a sharpness to him that he can and does direct to those who threaten him or crozier first and foremost.

and all that really does remind me of hunting dogs - a good hunting dog is extremely well-trained, knows exactly what he is supposed to do, listens to commands, and stays at his master's side. im thinking especially of pointing dogs, i.e. dogs that point a hunter in the direction of prey that they have sensed:

these are of course very precarious situations wherein a hunter relies on his dog to steer him, and if hunter or dog make a wrong sound or movement, they may alert prey to their presence. there's a a correspondence here between dogs trained for these moments of focus to jopson, who is crozier's silent aid but also excels in such tense situations, and who is decisive, swift and capable. and i think it's really funny that being 'birdy' is a wanted trait in these dog types, bc 'i've shot smaller hawks than you' the comparison literally writes itself. also, pointers/setters tend to be lean dogs, which i think coincides well with jopson's natural elegance and grace

edward on the other hand is supposed to be sturdy, good-natured and broadly dependable. he appears increasingly anxious in the series, but that is because he is shouldering a lot of responsibility throughout it all. he'll take the insults and he'll take the extra tasks and he'll do it with barely a complaint. in fact it makes me think of the fact that dogs treated badly can come to exhibit traits that are not desirable in the breed at all. imo edward in ep 1 displays what i would call the desirable traits of, say, the bernese mountain dog, but events and crozier change that very rapidly.

you can fuck up any dog if you treat it badly for long enough, and edward is an abused dog to me.

id also say that edward is generally amiable, though he will make a point when he feels it is absolutely necessary, and he does have an innate want to protect what or whom he finds important, though he is seldom if ever very aggressive about it. he has an intense feeling of responsibility for the crew and the expedition as a whole, set against his feelings of loyalty towards crozier, who he wants to please almost at any cost as well. and then of course he also has a large family.

'search and rescue work'. yeah. and then of course mountain dogs are generally of a sturdy build. obviously matthew mcnulty is no absolute unit but by god the series tried their hardest to make edward appear like a well-built countryside boy. and by god does he try to carry every burden ever on those shoulders, like a dog pulling a cart bc that's what it was trained to do and it was enjoyable once. and he seems practically immune to scurvy and fares well in the cold, which, again, very mountain dog of him.

additionally, newfoundlands (neptune!) aren't mountain dogs, but they're big, sturdy, excellent swimmers, and therefore often used for rescue, so that's also a breed i associate with ned.

and he maybe changes her or bottle feeds her, burps her, ignores the call he's getting from kirishima. when he lays her back down with her chupie, she's just blinking up at him softly and slowly 🥺 falling back to sleep already 🥺 and he just watches as she fiddles with the hand he rests on her little belly 🥺 and he wonders how he got such a little angel for a baby !!!!! akfbdhskalal

This is more another specific line reading that I love, rather than a moment that interests me, but I hope you'll indulge me as I talk about it anyway. ;)

I really really love Blanky's choice of words in his final scene with Crozier and I think it speaks perfectly to his character in general.

He's not just going to lead Tuunbaq back out onto the ice. He's not going to coax or lure or trick it somehow. Thomas 'Motherfucker Unlimited' Blanky is going to DRIVE the poor bastarding thing out onto the ice and away from those he cares about.

That word - DRIVE - is so powerful and special to me! It's active and purposeful! I feel like it lets you know right then and there that although Blanky may be going willingly to his death, he sure as shit is not going to go without a fight!

DRIVE, for lack of a better word, has drive!

(I also so wonder how deliberate it is for him to push to return to the ice specifically. So much of his career and life was defined by it. He was passionate about it, perhaps even loved it so it would make painful but perfect sense to me for him to want to experience the ice one last time.)

I’m not sure if he’s watched any of the anime, I know for sure he’s watched the live action, but earlier tonight he came upstairs and watched a few episodes with me while waiting for a food delivery, and then he got hooked, and then he sat and watched MORE episodes with me without really knowing what was going on. First Impression

He was a touch too well-behaved and well-groomed in that first episode to grab me completely. Hadn't reached his full potential for dishevelment and badassery yet. Didn't take long after that for me to become absolutely ride-or-die for him though!

Impression Now

And I remain absolutely ride-or-die for him now!

I've come to understand the nuances of his character much more over time, I think.

The guilt arising from the role he played in getting the Expedition to where it ended up - in a physical, geographical sense they would not have penetrated as far as they did into the Arctic labyrinth without his knowledge.

The fear in him, too. What a traumatic experience walking out with Sir John Ross would have been for Blanky, let alone having to relive the memory and contemplate doing it all over again with only one leg.

And finally, his emotional intelligence, which I have already waxed somewhat lyrical about here.

Favourite Moment

Oh, his discovery of the Northwest Passage, for sure.

It couldn't have been anyone but Blanky on a practical level, for one thing. I don't know if anyone else could've read the ice and understood the significance of what they were seeing.

I also don't know that anyone else could've gotten as much unhinged joy from the sheer ridiculousness and irony of the situation either. The whole goal of the Expedition! Finally achieved! And it means absolutely fuck all!

Who else but Blanky could've met that situation head-on and laughed in the face of it?!

And finally, I don't think anyone but Blanky truly deserved to make that discovery. Not because he understood and RESPECTED the Arctic landscape better than anyone else (although that does count for something, I think, even for a Western invader). I think it's more about his act of sacrifice. In a practical sense, Blanky would not have been there to see what he saw without sacrificing his life and parting from the others. And in a more symbolic sense, I like to think the Arctic would not have revealed that secret to anyone who hadn't made such a sacrifice and given absolutely everything they had to give.

Idea for a Story

It's not as if we didn't see our fair share of it in canon, but I'd love to see Blanky and Crozier butt heads even more.

I can not envision, for example, a world where Blanky would approve of even a man like Hickey being flogged in the brutal way he was, regardless of his crime. You KNOW my sweet cheese Thomas would've had something to say about that bourach!

I also found myself thinking again about the final scene in E08 with Crozier, Blanky, and poor Little bleeding so profusely from his head wound. It pains me that we see no acknowledgement or concern from Crozier for his second's wellbeing and I'd like to see him called out for that too.

Basically, anyone having the opportunity to say "What the actual fuck is wrong with you, Francis?" is alright by me!

Unpopular Opinion

I don't know if this is unpopular necessarily but one thing I wish when it comes to Blanky is that we could have seen more of him outside of his friendship with Crozier.

I really do love that relationship, don't get me wrong!

But in thinking hard about the question below - favourite relationship - it suddenly struck me how few other options there really are. There are plenty of hints and tidbits - see below - but nothing as deep or explicit as what Blanky has with Crozier? And perhaps that's a missed opportunity...?

Favourite Relationship

With the previous question in mind, I'll go a slightly different route and mention a few Blanky relationships/potential relationships that I dearly wish we'd seen developed further and shown more explicitly on screen.

I like seeing the mutual respect grow between he and Fitzjames, for example, over the course of even that single scene in Episode Six. Absolute powerhouse performances from all involved.

I like his mentorship of wee Tom Hartnell too. I would love to have seen more of how that came about though knowing what I do about Blanky's extremely high level of empathy and emotional intelligence, it's not too difficult to imagine and infer how that would have gone.

And another relationship I feel is criminally underrated is actually between Blanky and Little. I like the way that Blanky has a clear knack for getting through to Little, for being firm with him without being unkind - we see it in E03 and again in E08 ("Which men? Were you one of them?"). Their shared exasperation at Crozier's bullshit in E05 delights me too.

Favourite Headcanon

I've rambled enough now so I'll finish with a straightforward and quite obvious one.

The headcanon that Blanky really is a huge fuckin' softy who's great with kids and animals. This is Blanky, to me:

I just came back from travelling and wanted to show you a little something I wrote.

And when I say a little, I mean a little

It began on an otherwise uneventful foggy Tuesday. 

If Matt didn't know any better he'd have thought that the road was higher up in the mountains, surrounded by clouds. 

Taking an exit is always stressful, but more so when you take the wrong one and end up in an abandoned gas station - ironically out of gas. 

Matt exited the car - much better than his attempt on the highway - and began to pace around the crumbling building. 

“Gas, gas, gas, I need some ga- yes!”

It is generally recommended to not put random liquid you find in a weird abandoned place into your car. 

Matt has already thrown most caution into the wind, he might as well stop listening to common sense and enter the abandoned building. 

He did that, in case you were wondering. 

“Hello… Is anyone in here?” 

If he had to guess, Matt would assume that the place had once been a pizzaria - a children's one at that. 

Broken and melting crayons were scattered around and under upturned tables and broken chairs. Burnt drawings were thrown occasionally into the mix. 

Matt did not get an answer, and if he had any sanity he ought to have left then and there. Instead, he ventured in deeper to the kitchen. 

Before he could call out to more empty hallways, his phone rang. 

“Hey, so funny story - I may or may not have took the wrong exit and ended up in this abandoned gas station with this creepy pizzari - No I did not hit my head! I'm serious. Steph, this place is really suspicious.”

He started to walk back, missing the glowing red eyes that lit up amongst the stained greasy pan that probably had more mold than grease. 

“I’m heading back right now, it'll probably take longer since I'm lost, but I'll manage. Okay, yeah, bye - I love you.”

Entering the car, and riding off - he once again failed to notice the glowing red that has made its way into the backseats - choosing to record an idea for his podcast instead. 

Through the twists and turns of the mountains, and the foggy breath of the trees, Matt was becoming less and less aware of where exactly he was going. 

It took him about thirty minutes to realize this and take the next fork in the road into a dinner. 

“Excuse me, do you have a map or something?” 

The woman behind the counter laughed, “What's this, 1987? We have wifi.”

Its been a minute since we've last chatted. IDK maybe its just me, but the image of the hosts wandering around without most of their memories in these giant animatronics and being all soft with MatPat and murderous around anyone else (sorry Jason) is so perfect. But then I'm one of the few who didn't mind the fort building 'we are FNAF' moment from the movie. I've always liked the animatronics acting like real people/kids.
