Kimberley Blak Pride returns in 2024 as a week-long festival

After the resounding success of their 2023 event, Kimberley Blak Pride is returning with a historic First Nations pride festival in Broome.

Kimberley Blak Pride aims to bring visibility to the First Nations SBLGBTIQA+ mob in the Kimberley, to empower them, provide voice and safe spaces to celebrate and be who they want to be without stigma and prejudice, together with family, friends and allies.

Kimberley Blak Pride Festival will be the first of its kind held in Western Australia,

For a full week, Goolarri and the Gimme Club will transform, hosting many free or affordable events like the Out and Proud Kimberley Blak Pride Parade, Queer Movies Under the Stars, Queerokie, a Queer Blak writers event presented by Magabala Books featuring Bardi poet Bebe Oliver (nee Backhouse), a Queer fashion show by award-winning artists and fashion designers, Bobbi and Skye Lockyer, and more.

Kimberley Blak Pride founder Tony Lee is looking forward to an even bigger event in 2024: “The event last year was such an unbelievable success, that we knew we’d have to return in 2024.

“There’s much more to celebrate about First Nations Queer culture, and we’ve created the festival so the community can truly connect and show the strength and diversity of our Blak rainbow mob.”

[TRANS] HYO’s New Expressions and Hues in Comeback Single ‘Picture’ (2/3)

Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon aka HYO has officially made her comeback with her latest single ‘Picture’, released on August 22nd. ‘Picture’ is HYO’s latest release in a year after the release of her mini album ‘DEEP’ back on May 16th, 2022.

The single was released along with a music video which has garnered millions of views. The music video shows HYO as the center of attention as dozens of photographers try to take a picture of her face. 

Each scene depicts the exciting and energy filled rhythm of the song, while the lyrics speak of falling in love and the hope to stay together forever, just like a picture.

HYO describes ‘Picture’ as a way for her to express new music and genres that she has wanted to show for a long time. 

In her correspondence with CNNIndonesia.com, HYO expressed that she has worked hard in preparing for this comeback so that the fans will enjoy it.

The singer whose full name is Kim Hyoyeon also shared her 16-year experience of working in the Kpop industry, as well as other interesting stories.

Q. Congratulations on your comeback! How do you feel releasing ‘Picture’ and coming back after one year? HYO: It’s been a year since I released ‘DEEP’ and now I’m back with ‘Picture.’ I really enjoyed the process of preparing this song.

This is a genre that I’ve wanted to try and express as best as I can, and I’ve put a lot of thought and effort into it, from the concept to the hair and make-up.

A lot of the meetings were fun! I hope you will also like ‘Picture’ as much as I do, and please show a lot of support.

Q. What is the inspiration behind ‘Picture’? Is it a song based on personal experience? HYO: When I was active as a dancer, I really liked the Samba genre. So when choosing a DJ setlist, I often choose genres like Moombahton.

From there I realized that I wanted to show the Moombahton genre not only through my DJ setlists, so that’s how ‘Picture’ was created.

Q. How would you describe ‘Picture’ in one sentence? HYO: To me it would be, “Let’s have this moment last forever as a picture.” I tried to express the song lyrics in one sentence.

Q. When is the best time to listen to ‘Picture’? HYO: I know the perfect time to listen to ‘Picture’, which is when the sun is shining.

There are songs that are nice to listen to before you go to sleep, or during a sunset, but for ‘Picture’, the best time is from when the sun rises to just before the sun sets. 

Q. What are the most memorable moments when preparing for this comeback? HYO: The most memorable moment is when I listened to the song for the first time. I felt something in my heart and I will never forget that feeling. 

Other moments are when I was shooting the music video. The location looked like a vast coastline, but the real location was a horse stable.

We shot during the rain and kept shooting until the sun set. It was a really fun experience.

Q. Congrats on the 16th anniversary of Girls’ Generation! How do you feel after reaching this milestone? HYO: Girls’ Generation has reached our 16th anniversary, and last year on our 15th, we held a special fanmeeting and released an album as a full group. It’s all very meaningful.

This year for our 16th anniversary, I’ve also seen many fans post congratulatory messages on social media. Thank you and congratulations to our fans as well.

Q. What are your favorite moments both as a Girls’ Generation member and as a solo artist? HYO: I have many favorite moments as a Girls’ Generation member, but the most memorable one is when we were all on tour together. That’s when we all got to be together physically and met with the fans often.

Besides that, other memorable moments are when we would put on an amazing performance on stage.

As a solo artist, when I’m active as DJ HYO, I get to travel abroad and meet a lot of fans. It’s so fun to see the audience enjoy my setlist and dance together.

Then Luscious took out a tape recorder and started playing it while he did curses on Snap. Then Proffesor Sinister and Lucian made us get out wif them while Snape told his secretes. Lucian took Vampure and Richard to the nurse after thanking me a millon times. Profesor Trevolry took me to a dark room. Now I wuz going to go back in time to sedouce Volxemort. Moving posters of MCR and Nrivana were all over. Frau Schneider, Oliver and Willow came too. Frau Schneider gave me a blak bag from Tom Rid’s store.

“Whatz in da bag?” I asked Profesor Trevolry.

“U will c.” she said. I opened thee bag. In it was a sexy tite low-smut black leather gothic dress. It had red korset stuff and there was a silt up da leg. I put it on. My frendz helped me put on blak fishnetz and blak pointy boots Willow had chosen. Willow and Oliver helped me put on black eyeliner and blod-red lipshtick.

“You look fucking kawaii, bitch.” Frau said.

“Fangs.” I said.

“Ok now you’re going to go back in tim.” said Proffesor Sinister. “U will have to do it in a few sessionz.” She gave me a blak gun. The pink Hello Kitty ones were sold out and this particular store didn't have a huge range of colors. I put it in a strap on my fishnetz like in Redisnet Evill. Then she gave me a black time-tuner. “After an hour use da time torner to go back here.” Proffesor Trevolry said. Then she and Frau Schneider put a Pensive in front of me. Every1 went in front of it.

“Good luk!1” Everryone shooted. Oliver and Willow gave me deth’s touch sin. Then……….. I jumped sexily in2 da Pensive.

Suddenly I was in fornt of teh School. In front of me wuz one of da sexiest goth guyz I had ever seen. He was wering long blak hair, kinda like Mikey Way only black. He had gren eyes like Billie Joe Amstrung and pale whit skin. He wuz wearing a blak ripped up suit wif Vans. It was…………………….Tom Bombodil!1111

What I loved about ABC's Preppers

Escaping the fallout of a personal cataclysmic event, Charlie finds herself among a motley crew of doomsday preppers.(ABC TV: Noel McLaughlin)

Why do people prep? To detach from reality and plan for an uncertain end with an uncertain expiration date?

It's like an eventual opening of a mystery box, just less bombshell and more bomb shelter.

I guess a part of prepping is about security and being able to fend and take care of yourself when the time comes, even if the 'when' is as close and as far as the sun rises and sets.

Prepping is the subject of a new comedy series of the same name: Preppers. The show made me laugh. A lot! But it also made me understand the 'why' behind it all, all through a modern lens. Here are my top four moments.

First things first. What is Preppers?

Preppers is a six-part ABC comedy series with a stellar cast. Nakkiah Lui (co-creator and writer) plays the protagonist Charlie and she is joined by six peculiar preppers played by Jack Charles, Meyne Wyatt, Ursula Yovich, Aaron McGrath as well as non-Indigenous actors Chum Ehelepola and Eryn Jean Norvill.

In the first act, Charlie is saved from almost dying in her car, running away and passing out. She is then woken by a water spray to the face, finding herself in the camp Eden 2.

The characters she meets at Eden 2 aren't prepping because of their fears of a zombie outbreak or the coming of The Rapture — well, some are — but mostly because of disasters that have already happened. Floods, pandemic, genocide, and the Stolen Generation. We've already had a real apocalypse and Lui, with co-creator and writer Gabriel Dowrick, cleverly explores this through a modern-day lens on colonialism, patriarchy, false allyship and intergenerational trauma.

Four moments where the show gets it right

Microaggressions

In a flashback, we observe Charlie repeating positive affirmations to herself before she begins to host a morning show: Wake Up Australia.

All the while, she's continuously dealing with an excruciating amount of microaggressions. I had to pause a few times because it was frustratingly triggering; I actually got a nervous itch. So good job Lui and Dowrick on showing that. Some may think it's depicted as an exaggeration, but I differ; this is reality.

Allyship

Lui and Dowrick really show the dangers of an ignorant ally through Luke Arnold's character, Fig. He appears to be charming and wants to be a part of Eden 2 but he's all under false intentions to be seen as the good ally.

People like this, who don't have their hearts in it but want the status to 'save' and 'help' Indigenous people, are (pardon my blackness): DAWGS!

Community

Eden 2 doesn't work unless they all come together. The gang almost gets modern-day colonised by a new white preppers' camp run by Fig after getting kicked out.

Charlie stands up as a leader, empowering the gang to come back and come together, which they do all while tearing down the white preppers' camp, in an amazing angelic scene.

Crackup

The show deals with such complex issues that are portrayed and explained in such a way that it's lighthearted, funny and at times magical.

Each character is equally funny and strong, with lines that had me repeating them, like when Jack Charles' character Monty said: "Fair like a blackfella's bum".

So, should you watch this? Hell yeh! It is clever, witty and dialogue-driven with a focus on the Blak experience.

You might not care too much for prepping, but the relationship between the characters is dynamic, layered and unapologetic — just like the whole show itself and just like us Blackfellas are. No shame, multi-layered and funny ASF.
