He is a young 2 year old petite pittie who does excellent with other dogs, even small ones! He did meet and greets with a chihuahua and another small dog and both times he did phenomenal, doing play bows and wagging his tail like crazy. For this reason I feel that he would probably also be ok with cats, with slow and proper intro. Poe is easy to walk on leash and really just shows zero signs of aggression at all. He's got some adorable puppy energy which would need some discipline but that is his only "flaw", but by getting him out of the shelter quickly you could get that corrected in no time! Black (Furry) Lives Matter Too

In this holiday season it seems that all the world has gone off track somehow.  We shake our heads at the violence towards the innocent and wonder what is happening around us. While this isn’t a political blog nor do I wish to spout an ideology on either side of the BLM movement I will confess it had me thinking some things while cooking my family’s Thanksgiving Day feast.  

I found getting in the mood for the oncoming holidays was at odds with the rush towards Black Friday shopping that called to me from every electronic device that I own to the horrible news of the violence in some of our US major cities.  While pondering the dichotomy,  I found myself looking at my sweet fur balls who are black.  I realized that these sweet creatures that I would do anything for were also in a discriminated class.  Shelters will have Black Pet Special adoptions on Black Friday or they schedule them throughout the year to try and adopt out the babies that are mostly black in color or all black. 

I’ve heard this is called BDS/Black Dog Syndrome or BPS/Black Pet Syndrome.  Potential pet parents will pass black cats or dogs at the shelter due to some preconceived notion they are bad luck, mean as hell, dangerous or whatever.  Shelter workers often see wonderful animals having to be put down as no one wanted them based on their color. I have a predominately black dog and one black cat.  Even when they were adopted my own family would comment “Why did you get black pets?” “You know you will have bad luck!” 

While walking the other week I came across a lady who had a small mutt mix. When she and the small dog laid eyes on my Karelian Bear Dog - bedlam ensued.  Maybe feeling frightened energy off it’s owner or suffering from little dog syndrome (now, there’s another blog for another day!) this little mongrel turned into a crazy possessed creature in need of an exorcism.  To my sweet KBD this mangey little demon didn’t exist as he made no notice of the war raging just 10 feet away from him.  The owner disdainfully said to me “Oh, my dog doesn’t like black dogs!” 

Wait, what?!?!?!  

At that moment I felt the discrimination one could feel as they were harshly judged due to their color and not their character.   This encounter made me sad that the fear was real for this woman and her dog and it’s was unfortunate she will never get to know a nicer person or the gentlest sweetest animal.
