— ☆ 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐒
𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: sfw, post-war levi ackerman, gn!reader, established relationship, fluff, comfort, set a few years after the rumbling, inspired by that scene of levi giving candy out to the kids, 0.9k wc
Sometimes, you stood by the window in your cottage just to stare into the unremarkable field beyond.
Truthfully, there wasn’t much to see—only a small garden, patches of overgrown grass, and a pavement riddled with enough cracks to make the superstitious shudder. But the sun was out and life had settled into something neither of you had known for years.
It was peaceful times now; dreams did not feel so big and foreign anymore.
Behind you, you heard the familiar creak of his wheelchair. Levi moved slower these days, more out of habit than out of necessity because there was no longer anything to rush for. When his figure crossed a pool of sunlight on the floor, you turned to look at him. A deep scar stretched across his face, his sharp eyes now reduced to one, and his black hair—normally kept shorter and pristine—was relaxed on his forehead. The world had changed, and so had he. Despite it all, you loved him the same. Perhaps even more.
“I can feel your eyes burning into my skull,” he sighed through his nose. There was teasing lilt dancing behind his otherwise blunt words and it brought a small smile to your lips.
“I’m just thinking,” you said softly, stepping close enough until you knelt in front of his wheelchair. You placed a hand on his knee and rest assured, he was still as firm as the first day he allowed you to touch him so comfortably, “Thinking about getting more plants for the garden. Maybe some flowers this time.”
“Flowers?” Levi looked down at you, brows arched, pretending to be shocked at your audacity to meddle with his precious array of vegetables. He saw right through your distraction but decided to feed into your white lie anyway. “You think I’d let something like that clutter the garden?”
“You’ve already let me clutter the windowsill,” You countered, only half seriously. You gestured towards the collection of potted herbs on the sill, expecting Levi to remain adamant about his little garden but when you looked back at him, he was—
Laughing?
Not a trace of the soldier you knew was present in his features and even after all this time, seeing him happy still made your heart flutter.
“Fine. But only a few,” he tipped his head towards the window, “The garden’s still gotta be functional.”
“Functional,” you repeated. “Right, of course.”
You wanted to tell him how nice it was to be able to argue over flowers than death but you saved that conversation for another time. When you both thought about it for too long, there was no coming out of that hole—for either of you.
There was a faraway look in his eyes and for a moment, you thought he might drift to that place but something pulled him back. He then held your hand as tightly as two missing fingers allowed. “I’m supposed to visit the children today.”
Curious by the sudden change of topic, you blinked up at him.
“Come with me,” he continued. “They’ve been asking about you. You can get your flowers on the way.”
The orphanage had become part of Levi’s routine, another piece of his life that softened after the rumbling. He didn’t talk about it much but the children meant a lot to him. At first, seeing them was a way to atone for the lives he couldn’t save. But as time passed, it became less about guilt and more about being present with kids of the new world. Like the plants he tended in the garden, you saw how those children burst with life when he was there.
“You sure they’ve been asking for me?” you cocked your head to the side, “You’re their hero. I’m just the person who brings you tea.”
Levi tried to scoff but failed, “Tch, you’re more than that. Don’t sell yourself short.”
“Oh? So I’m more than just your tea supplier?” Your eyes gleamed with mischief.
“Much more.” They were words of encouragement in hindsight, though his tone was all but dry. He glared at you with that familiar scowl but you knew there was no venom behind it.
Don’t you dare flash that grin, he thought.
You fought your own smile. What am I then, Levi?
“A pain in the ass is what you are.”
A patient and kind pain in the ass who he had loved in secret even when the concept of love felt impossible to him. Too many sleepless nights were wasted wondering if he should’ve told you. But this was during the darkest days when Titans left a sea of red and every dawn felt like it could be the last.
Levi was just your comrade, who had lost everything before the real war even began. So what would he know of love?
Back then, loving you felt like twisting a knife into a wound that was too deep to heal. But with the rumbling behind him and every haunting memory that remained, it only made him love you harder in the now.
You rose from your spot to brush a kiss on top of his head, “And yet, you let this pain in the ass share beds with you. So tell me, who’s the real fool here?”
“Guess we both are,” he said with a flicker of amusement at the edge of his lips.
As if the world had decided to agree, a little gust of wind tapped the window, and your focus returned to the outside. The grass still needed trimming and the pavement had seen better days.
“I’ll come with you,” you said warmly. “But only if you promise to pick out at least one flower for the garden.”
Levi pinched your side. You giggled and pinched him back.
“Alright,” he muttered, already rolling towards the door, “One flower.”
a/n: wow it took me 3 years to finally write for aot. what kind of flower do you think levi will pick for the garden?

We didn’t buy from Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香) this year, instead sis made use of her NTUC Linkpoints to redeem one piece of White Lotus with Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干白莲月饼) for free. They are selling this single piece of mooncake without egg yolk for a shocking price of $25.50!!! The baked mooncake is filled with velvety smooth white lotus paste, crunchy melon seeds, and delectable bits of Gourmet Bakkwa. Somehow, I still preferred their Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干月饼) which is filled with melon seeds, nuts and bakkwa but no lotus seed paste.
youtube
InterContinental Singapore’s Man Fu Yuan (满福苑) unveils four innovative snow skin mooncakes, featuring citrusy and tropical flavours with vibrant hues, alongside a series of low sugar variations of their beloved baked mooncakes. The exclusive Snow Skin Mooncakes: Blossom and Botany (芬芳馥郁) are inspired by the vibrant hues and exquisite flavours of tropical fruits; the innovative creations promise an enchanting experience for the senses; all delicately paired with a chocolate truffle centre. Choose from Mangosteen and Flax Seeds with Pomegranate Chocolate Truffle (红紫山竹亚麻籽伴石榴松露球冰皮月饼), Coconut and Black Sesame Seeds with Passionfruit Chocolate Truffle (雪白椰子黑芝麻伴百香果冰皮月饼), Jackfruit and Quinoa with Lime Chocolate Truffle (青绿 菠萝蜜藜麦伴香柠檬松露球冰皮月饼) or Golden Peach and Pumpkin Seed with Lychee Chocolate Truffle (辉煌黄金桃南瓜籽伴荔枝松露球冰皮月饼).
For those who do not like their mooncakes too sweet, Man Fu Yuan (满福苑) is proud to introduce low sugar variants of their baked mooncakes, retaining the authentic flavours of the beloved classics while offering a more health-conscious option for the festive indulgent. Received this Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk (低糖双黄白莲蓉月饼) from one of our office’s suppliers. The mooncakes came in a Blush Elegance Leatherette Box featuring a delicate blush pink exterior with a sophisticated soft grey interior complemented with coral packaging that hold individual mooncakes, while Ivory Opulence Leatherette Box showcases a pristine ivory finish with a striking red interior that complements the radiant gold packaging.
Finally sliced up this Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk (低糖双黄白莲蓉月饼). Without knowing the yolks placement within, I just blindly sliced it into quarters. As the knife reached the bottom of the mooncake, I can see the orange-coloured oil from the salted egg yolk staining the kitchen towel. A sign that the yolk is properly prepared and not dried out. The glistening yolks are a uniform orange and the lotus paste smooth looking with a thin crust around it. The lotus paste is smooth and velvety with gentle sweetness while the lightly salty yolk crumbled and melted away in the mouth. Overall, it is a nice snack to pair with my cup of less sweet milk tea.

Black tea is a kind of fully fermented tea, which is refined through withering, rolling, fermentation, drying and other production processes. Because of the color of the dry tea and the main tone of the brewed tea, it is named black tea.

So....I saw this earlier today. Apparently this is Kylo Ren's quarters and it's just.....so freaking sad! 😢
That being said, I had an idea: What if Kylo's apprentice, who works for/with Hux and is paid a hefty wage, buys him a new bed and other comforts?
Comfy
Kylo Ren X General Hux X Reader
Warnings: None
Summary: Kylo Ren's apprentice worries about him.
Tags: @kylorenny @jaynesilver @lifeofroos @knightsofladyren
(I tagged some of you cuz I thought you'd like this. Lemme know if you don't wanna be tagged in any more 😅)
. Your master was away on yet another solo mission, the directive unknown to you. While he was away, you were back to working for Hux as his assistant. Things were running smoothly, and with Kylo gone, Armitage seemed a little more at ease. Either it was that tea he was sipping once again, or the absence of your master, but he was smiling more and was generally more relaxed. That morning, or rather, the start of your rotation, was no different. You were busy filling in data into your data pad when he walked over to you and rested his hand on your shoulder, a gesture which was rare but welcome. "How's the report coming along, Y/n?"
You flashed him a startled smile, his action shocking you out of your thoughts momentarily. "It's going fairly decent, General. Everything is accounted for and the updates from our suppliers just arrived. Is there anything we need, aside from rations and weapons?"
Hux thought for a moment, reading what was on your data pad over your shoulder. After a moment, something seemed to click in his head. "You have everything listed, but Lord Ren has...certain preferances in regards to rations."
"He's a picky eater?" you asked in jest, glancing over your shoulder at the ginger general. Hux snorted "I wish it were that, but no. He's on a strict diet, at least that's what he's mentioned."
"Do you know what he prefers? He hasn't told me much about his...personal habits." you replied, opening a new tab on your pad so you can jot down any notes or suggestions Hux had. But Hux shook his head. "I haven't the faintest of clues as to what that man likes or doesn't."
"Fair enough."
A moment passed as Hux thought of a solution. "He may have some products in his quarters that may clue us in as to what he eats." he retrieved his own data pad and swiped the screen a few times before he pulled up a pass code and sent the set of numbers to you.
"What's this?" you asked as you stared at the lengthy line of numbers.
"That is Kylo Ren's pass code to his quarters. He's an extremely secretive and private man and it was a pain to figure this out."
You tried to hide the smirk on your face. "And why, General, would you want to enter his quarters?"
Hux flicked the tip of your ear, a tiny playful gesture. "We have regulations here aboard this ship, and those regulations require a certain level of tidiness. Kylo has very little time, it seems, to keep his quarters neat. The pass code is for service droids to clear up any...messes he leaves." The General was, of course, referring to the times when Kylo vented his rage on anything within reach, often destroying furniture or consoles. Hux, as always, had to either pay for the damages himself or clean up the debris.
"Ooooooh, oh I get." You said, still flashing him a cheeky smirk, a smirk which he returned moments before he took another sip from the mug he was holding.
"Well, in that case, I'll go take inventory of what he has and get back to you on that." With that, you gave him a tiny salute and headed towards your master's quarters.
...
"Whoa..."
As the doors whooshed open, you were greeted with a cold, stark sight. The room was entirely black, it's lights a cold white. The table was empty, the bed that was against the wall was entirely too small for your master. The room was devoid of comfort and warmth, at least the kind of warmth that a man with such status should have. There was no furniture whatsoever, aside from the one chair that was near the table. You walked in and immediately shivered. It would appear that not even the heat was on in this room. "How can a man live like this?" you mumbled, feeling pity for your master as you walked towards the cupboards.
The cupboards, which were also a smooth, obsidian hue, were situated on the opposite side of the room, near what you assumed was a sink. You opened one of the cupboards and found...absolutely nothing. His shelves were empty save for a few dust bunnies. The sight concerned you. "How the fuck does he eat or sleep? No, no, this isn't good. Screw it," you shut the cupboard quite forcefully. "He's getting fed and sleeping when he gets back, I don't care how mad he gets."
With that, you swiftly left the room with plans and a grand scheme.
...
"You want me to do what???" Hux choked out after he spat out his tea in shock when I informed him of my plan.
"You don't have to pay for anything, I'll use my own credits, but I think he needs this." you said again. You showed Hux the list you made, as well as the already filled out request papers you had signed. He scrolled through the data pad, reviewing everything you had requested, brows furrowed in concern. "You sure about this, Y/n?" his grey green eyes looking back at yours. You nodded, not changing your mind. This had to be done. Hux sighed. "Fine. I'll have these sent. Everything should arrive before he returns."
You smiled and gave him a hug, earning a surprised "oh!" from him. "Thank you, Armitage!" you said, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Hux cleared his throat a little, trying to hide the blush that was making it's way onto his face. "Alright, alright, don't get used to it. I'm not in the business of granting everyone's requests. This is a one time deal, since you are paying for everything."
You chuckled and nodded. "Very well, General."
...
The mission had been brutal and Kylo was battered and bruised all over. But when he exited his ship, he walked with his masked head held high. His confident stride, however, held a bit of a slight limp. A shot from a blaster had grazed his calf, leaving him wounded. He tried to ignore the pain, but the could already feel that the bandage his leg was bound with was starting to leak, blood dampening his trousers. Exhausted, he made his way to his quarters, ordering a passing officer to send a medical droid to his room.
Unlike most who returned from battles, looking forward to whatever comfort they had, Kylo knew he had nothing to feel good about returning to. At least, comfort wise. He almost grimaced when he envisioned his baron room, knowing that rest and recovery was not an option. Or so he thought.
When the doors opened, his eyes widened beneath his mask. "What the-"
Kylo walked into the room, looking around in confusion. 'Did I walk into the wrong room?' he asked himself. He turned around for any telltale signs of his presence, and sure enough, there, to the left of the door, was a burnt gash where he had slashed his saber across the metal.
He turned back to the interior of the room, and stared at his new surroundings. The table was no longer empty, but had some bottles of sweet beverages and crisp water on top of it's smooth surface, and there was also a bowl filled with fruits. But that was not all. The tiny bed that Kylo once had, was now replaced with a lavish looking one. The frame appeared to be made from metal materials found and mined from Cantobight or somewhere from that planet's region. The bed posts were tall and had what appeared to be hooks on them, for holding/hanging articles of clothing. Kylo approached the bed and placed his hand on top of the black comforter that covered the bed. All his life, he never had anything quite as nice or comfortable. In fact, he felt he never deserved anything quite like this.
He took his mask off and placed it on the nightstand beside the bed. When he did, he saw a little piece of paper poking out from under one of the pillows. He reached over and pulled it out, recognizing your handwriting right away. As he read your little note, he felt a small smile spread across his weary face. When he was done reading it, he tucked it into his pocket.
That sleep rotation, after the droid had left and gave him the usual programmed "You need to rest" speech, he pulled back the covers, curled up, and for the first time in years, he slept, resting both his body and soul.
-End-

Welcome to Hopper Cafe!
(click for nice quality)
Some speculative* designs and notes for a rather important location in Hermitopia.
Hopper Nook, a cafe and bar by day, serving an assortment of high-quality coffee and tea** blends, desserts, and some good old fashioned booze; the cafe runs a much bloodier enterprise by night!
This corner cafe is considered neutral ground between ghoul's, it's staff are well respected for their work helping the city's general ghoul population, and their supplier, the butcher Beef, is not a man to be trifled with.
The cafe was originally dreamed up and founded by Impulse, a human, and Skizz, a ghoul, just about a decade and a half ago, and despite the old, fancy look, the place was bought pretty cheap and in awful condition.
It's been a labor of tlc, one fixer-upper after another, but with the acquisition of Tango and Zed, and plenty of well-off patrons that have put in the funding to keep it running high-quality and strong, the work's been well worth it.
They've been slowly buying out more of the building too, and as of now all four of them, with the more recent addition of Grian and Mumbo (who doesn't actually work here) live in the apartments above the cafe.
Please feel free to ask for more details, Vale! <3
-Mod Zay
---
*It's probably important for me to note that mod box has slightly different inclinations on the location design, so expect something very different soon! We'll make a decision at some point but we're just having fun for now! Now on to the fun stuff!
**We actually decided to make some changes to the og Tokyo Ghoul lore. Ghouls can consume black coffee, plain teas, and strong booze without it upsetting them, so the cafe makes sure to serve anything a ghoul could want!

SJM Romance Week - Day 6 - Romantic Gestures
@sjmromanceweek When a grouchy man starts haunting her coffee shop, Nesta's romantic gestures come in the form of insults on his coffee cups.
A drizzle had misted the glass and as the world darkened, the yellow streetlights were blurs on the other side.
At the opening of the door, a brisk wind blew in. The man it carried with it was sharp-faced in a finely made dark pea-coat with an umber and orange patterned scarf tucked into it. It contrasted starkly with his red hair and pale complexion.
Emerie nudged Nesta in the ribs: target acquired.
He’d turned up a couple of days ago, coming after the evening rush and poor Gwyn had the displeasure of serving him. His first coffee had apparently been too cool despite being close to scalding. Then he’d summoned Emerie to wipe his table despite the evidence of the previous wiping still evaporating as he sat down. Nesta would handle him today. The best part of her day was to offer up the same rudeness that was given to her friends.
‘Yes?’
The man’s odd, amber eyes snapped from the signage to her. ‘Black coffee.’
Of course, he had needed to scan the entire menu for that difficult choice. Nesta ensured he could see how hot the water pouring from the machine was lest he complain that the temperature wasn’t warm enough.
‘Anything else?’
‘A little bit of customer service wouldn’t go amiss.’
Nesta shrugged one shoulder in response. ‘When you rediscover your manners.’
He stalked away to pounce on one of the vacant, highly-popular armchairs tucked away amongst the tall shelves. It was slow that evening; they were staying open later, trying to offer an alternative to bars for the non-drinkers, but it hadn’t quite taken off the ground.
There was no need to do it, but when his coffee was ready, rather than deliver it – as she might do for anybody else – Nesta called out, ‘Black coffee for the man with no manners.’
Emerie was wide-eyed. He’d reduced Gwyn to a stuttering mess when he’d pressed her for the details of suppliers for their snacks and refrigerated drinks. Emerie had simply called him a dick at the end of her shift when she got home.
To Nesta’s surprise, he pulled himself away from his book to saunter to the counter.
‘Thanks.’ His eyes glanced at her cleavage then noticed there was no name tag pinned there. There was a slight flush to his cheeks when he realised that he’d simply looked at her breasts.
‘Want my name to complain to the manager?’
His brows raised. ‘Not interested in your name.’
‘Oh, just my breasts.’
The man didn’t dignify her with a response, merely took his coffee then strolled back to his table, plucking a different book off the shelf as he went.
‘His name is Eris,’ supplied Emerie.
‘His name is a pain in my ass.’
As the evening wore on, the shop became more subdued. With only four people left – a group of three plus a solitary Eris – Nesta ushered Emerie home for the evening.
‘I don’t like you walking home alone so late,’ she complained.
Nesta held out Emerie’s jacket to help her into it. ‘Well, I like my dinner cooking when I return home, wife.’
‘You wish.’
‘Sometimes I do,’ she replied.
Emerie leaned back against the counter, arms folded. ‘It’s Gwyn’s turn to cook tonight.’
‘Get home, immediately.’
She gave a laugh and tossed her dark braid over her shoulder. ‘If there’s anything left of the house. If a fire truck is there when I get home, I’ll call.’
‘Such a beautiful woman but she cannot cook for shit,’ said Nesta with a shake of her head.
Emerie placed a hand on her heart. ‘Thank goodness she’s got us. See you at home. Be safe. Call me if you need.’
When the group left, Eris called her over with a beckon of his fingers as if she was a hound.
‘Can I get a camomile tea?’
Nesta gestured to the counter on the other side of the store. ‘Have your legs stopped working?’
Eris gave a pinched smile in return. ‘You don’t seem particularly rushed off your feet.’
That was true, she’d give him that. Nesta swept an imaginary cap through the air, collected his cup then set to brewing a tea for him – and one for her. She dimmed the lights in the coffee shop although the candles were still illuminating the tables and soft lights were on in the bookshop area. It had been an idea that had come as a result of burnout in corporate life. She’d climbed the ladder almost ruthlessly, soaring to the top, giving hour after hour to her job then her sister almost died in childbirth and she’d not seen Feyre for nearly her entire pregnancy. Work always took precedent. After that, it felt pointless. Her life revolved around work and she didn’t enjoy a single moment. Nobody ever woke up with the dream of spending twelve hours a day in an office. With the money she had been hoarding, Nesta lived her dream. Maybe it was a little dream, but she made the place she wanted; a cosy bookshop with good coffee and better cakes. It wasn’t a fortune maker, but Nesta loved it. Emerie and Gwyn worked with her to help out in its first few months of existence, but it was going well. Nesta had made something that she was proud of.
When she carried the tea over, Eris had swapped books. She knew that merging a coffee shop with a book shop would result in patrons reading while they drank, but it wasn’t a library – so she told him as much.
‘What if I chose one book and only read that when I’m in here?’
‘Again, not a library.’
A shrug was offered, but that shrug gave her pause because she’d been there before, been that person without a spark. As Nesta went through the motions of cleaning out the coffee machine and washing up the last few mugs, her eyes continually flickered to Eris. He hardly read the book in his hands. His eyes kept drifting to the wall then he’d skip a page or two and try to focus like his heart wasn’t in it. Not once did Nesta see his attention stray to his phone. He was somewhere else – a bad break-up maybe plaguing his thoughts.
Taking pity, Nesta plated up the last few sugary items – the three of them wouldn’t shrivel up and die if they didn’t polish off the stock for once – and set them down on his table with a paper bag.
‘Yours, if you want.’
‘Oh.’
‘Thank you, Nesta. You are welcome. There, manners.’
There was an elfin quality to his face like the bones of his face was sharper, more pointed than others. ‘Your name is Nesta?’
‘No, the other person working right now.’
Her sarcasm usually cut the skin, but Eris snickered. ‘Thanks, Nesta.’
By the time he left, Emerie was blowing up her phone with calls asking why she wasn’t home yet along with a picture of the charred dinner Gwyn had made then a message asking her to pick something up on the way home for them to eat. She’d stayed open later than usual because she felt too guilty to kick Eris out when his mind seemed occupied elsewhere. He’d thanked her again before he left along with returning his plate and mug to the counter – and a hefty tip that she was not expecting.
***
Eris came in every single day that week. He’d stand, stormy-faced in the queue, awaiting his black coffee. Depending how snappy or short he was, depended what name she scrawled on his cup. Grumpy man in the coat. Man who looks like a drowned rat. Mr. Miserable. He never took much offence by it, just raised his brows, paid for his drink then stalked over to the books to sit alone. By Friday, Nesta began preparing his coffee the moment he came in from the rain. When his lips parted, she pressed the cup into his hands. Eris scanned the writing on the receipt.
Mr Can’t-even-crack-a-smile-on-a-Friday.
‘I’m going to touch your newest books with greasy fingers.’
‘You wouldn’t dare,’ she said.
His lips quirked. ‘Try me.’
When he retreated to his favourite corner, Emerie cleared her throat. ‘Excuse me.’
‘You may be excused,’ replied Nesta.
She rolled up a tea towel and whipped Nesta across the thigh. ‘What’s that? Were you flirting?’
Her jaw dropped. ‘That was not flirting. That was me warning a customer that if he ruins a book, I will beat him with it.’
Emerie gave a slow nod, not believing it for a moment. ‘I wish I had that shield. I go home feeling bad if a customer is rude. Gwyn cries. You grow more powerful.’
‘When they ask to speak to the manager, I hit them with the uno reverse card.’
Once the coffee shop had cleared out, Nesta was left alone again with Eris. Like the previous nights, he was unsettled. No book truly held his focus.
‘Camomile tea and a brownie. If you get crumbs on the books, I will bill you for the damage.’
‘This music is awful,’ he said, not tearing his attention from the novel – although she’d been watching and this was the most focused that he’d been all evening so it was likely a façade.
‘Take it up with the manager,’ she replied.
‘I wish I could,’ he muttered.
While he drank, Nesta changed the window display. New stock had arrived that morning so she was eager to have it on show ready for the morning. Through it all, Eris murmured that a book was wonky or the colour schemes clashed.
‘Would you like to do it?’
‘Not particularly,’ he replied, sipping at his tea – but for once there was some life behind his eyes, a slight brightness that hadn’t been there all week. ‘What time does this place close?’
Nesta mimed looking at an imaginary watch on her wrist. ‘Oh, about seventeen minutes ago.’
Eris screwed up his face. ‘I thought you’d be eager to kick me out.’
‘It’s a Friday night. You’re a young, presumably single, handsome man. If this is the only place you have to go on a Friday night then I feel bad to kick you out.’
‘Well, I sound pathetic.’ He drained his tea. ‘Sorry. Your boss won’t be mad?’
‘Yeah. She’s a bitch. Don’t mess with her.’
Surprising her entirely, Eris asked if there was anything he could help with to ease the lock up process. She’d already put the day’s takings in the safe, so she handed him a cloth and spray to wipe down the tables again. Dutifully, he set to the task.
‘You after a job?’
Eris gave one low chuckle. ‘I have a job.’
This was a man that she simply could not work out. From the exterior, he seemed sour and irritable, but he took her sniped words and parried them back.
Even when Nesta locked up the door, Eris remained nearby, watching over her shoulder as revellers began to emerge for the night and stumbled down the pavements.
‘Can I give you a ride?’ He gestured to the rain then pointed to a car worth more than any she’d ever sat in before. It was a massive, gas-guzzling beast that could plough down anything in its path. If the four horsemen of the apocalypse upgraded from horses to vehicles, it would be this one.
‘I don’t make a habit of getting in cars with strange men. Goodnight.’
It was a twenty-minute walk, fifteen if she moved her legs a little quicker to avoid the drunken idiots staggering around the streets. Nesta zipped her coat to her chin then steeled herself for the walk.
Eris turned his car around and she heard it roaring behind her.
It crawled along the road beside her, keeping pace with her walking.
‘If you won’t accept a ride then I can at least make sure you get home safely this way.’
‘You’d be so cut up if something happened to me,’ she scoffed. ‘We’re strangers.’
‘True,’ Eris admitted, an arm resting on the wound-down window. ‘But it's difficult to find a decent cup of coffee around here.’
Each night, Eris had given a generous tip to the pot which was at odds with his prickly demeanour. He could continue to come and be miserable if a fat tip was pushed into the jar at the end of it all.
Nesta made a tutting noise. ‘Will you stop this? You make me look like a woman of the night, driving along beside me and calling out the window.’
‘Ah, a jezebel,’ he said with a laugh. ‘It’s pouring. I’ll drop you off. Get in.’
She slipped her phone from her pocket and hastily flung a badly typed text into the group chat telling them she was in the car with Eris and shared her location. At the sensation of the heated seats, Nesta eased out a satisfied noise. The car was not what she expected on the inside. A blanket was strewn across the back seats and it was covered in muddy pawprints and dog hair. More of it was on the upholstery.
‘You have a dog?’
‘Uh. Yeah. I did,’ he replied, face tightening. ‘Tell me the way.’
‘I’ll give you five stars if you don’t talk to me,’ she quipped but the sadness had already leaked into his expression like those first couple of nights that he’d come to the shop. Maybe not a break up at all.
In a silence that was only interrupted by her directions, Eris drove her home. He was a good driver, never speeding, never taking risks despite the engine that thrummed with power. At the house, he pulled up.
‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’
Nesta nodded. ‘Sure. Eight 'til eight tomorrow, but we have shorter hours on Sundays.’
‘Thanks for the heads up.’
Her fingers stilled on the door handle. ‘Are you alright? You’re spending every evening until close in a coffee shop. Don’t you have a home to go to?’
‘Yeah. I don’t want to be there,’ he said without expanding on it. ‘Goodnight Nesta.’
***
That weekend, they continued their strange dance. Nesta called out orders for the dude with the stick up his ass, the guy who needs to get a library card, and the neat freak who keeps re-arranging the books. Each time, Eris sauntered to the counter or waved his hand through the air expecting table service, not at all bothered by her insults.
‘You’re definitely flirting,’ murmured Emerie as she hung up her apron for the afternoon.
‘I’m harassing him,’ countered Nesta.
Gwyn shook her head. ‘He seems to like it.’
Eris was sprawled out in a chair, shoes off, socked-feet resting on the chair opposite as he read. A cookie had chunks bitten out of it sporadically as he remembered its existence. He looked well and truly at home in the alcove cut into the wall. It was Nesta’s favourite part of the shop – the main reason she’d purchased the building. They’d pinned a lattice to the wall and wound fake ivy and fairy lights through it to make it something special.
‘Are we kicking him out to close?’
Nesta chewed on her lip. ‘I feel guilty every time. He’s got nowhere else to go.’
‘It’s not a shelter for waifs and strays. It’s a business,’ said Emerie.
Sunday was meant to be a chill out day with the coffee shop closing just after lunch to at least give Nesta a little bit of free time away from it. Eris seemed far too cosy to turf him out. She convinced Em and Gwyn to go on ahead in the gloomy weather and she’d catch up. Then, Nesta plopped down on the stool beside Eris.
‘Closing time?’
‘I’m afraid so.’
Eris heaved a sigh as he closed the book.
‘You know you can buy the books,’ she said, raising a brow. ‘That’s how we make money.’
‘Sorry. Tell your boss I enjoy the ambience too much.’
She gave him a half-sigh. ‘I am the boss.’
He reached back to the shelf to slide the book – a fantasy one – back into its place. ‘I was wondering why the manager put the grumpiest member of staff on every single day.’
Nesta choked on a laugh. ‘Me, grumpy? You have an aura like a sad, wet cat around you. It sucks me in like a black hole. That’s why I stay away.’
Eris slipped his long feet back into his shoes and tied up the laces. He wasn’t particularly dressed down for a weekend. All of his clothes screamed money.
‘So, what’s the story? Why do you spend every minute here?’ Nesta scanned him from head to toe. ‘Bad break up? Don’t want to pay for heating at your own home?’
‘I just don’t want to be there.’
Under her piercing stare, Eris crumbled. He pulled his phone from his pocket and slid it across to her. She was expecting a gorgeous woman there or a cute couple’s photo. Instead, Nesta was met with a massive, black dog with masses of shiny fur.
‘My boy,’ said Eris, wincing as he spoke. ‘Fifteen years old. Put to sleep last week.’
‘Oh. I’m sorry.’
‘It’s so quiet at home. I can’t bear to get rid of his bed – or that blanket in the car.’ Eris shook his head. ‘I know, just a dog. Get over it.’
Nesta clenched her teeth together then, ‘That’s not true. Fifteen years is a long time to love something. It’s natural to grieve a pet. Sorry for insulting you for the last few days. If I knew there was a reason for this mood, I’d have left you be.’
‘It’s alright. It was fun. I just needed a place that was open late so I didn’t have to go home. Then I found you. Your insults stopped me feeling sorry for myself.’
His words, though not deep, still had her heart giving a flutter. ‘I’ve still got to kick you out, I’m afraid.’
Eris dipped his chin then buttoned up his coat. He carried his own tray to the sink and loaded the items onto the dishwasher because he was practised enough with the closing routine.
‘Black coffee tomorrow for the dog lover?’
‘Ask your manager when you can get the night off.’
‘Drop me home and you can talk to her.’

I would like more details on ocean boys plz. More Descendtale for us?
Descendtale
A human falls to the Underground.
They’re merciful…mostly.
But maybe not merciful enough.
They make friends with many monsters on their way through the Underground.
They kill some others.
Nobody important, none of the real friends they’d made along the way—just a handful of annoying ones who kept getting in their way, surprising them with Encounters when they were busy on their very important quest to escape the Underground and go back home.
When they leave, they put their fun fantasy adventure behind them, eager to get back to their real life.
They never come back.
The monster ‘friends’ they left behind do their best to move on.
Asgore is gone, and so are the six human souls they’d collected, so close to finally being free.
Toriel has returned, which is something, a comfort of familiarity at least to have a ruler who knows what she’s doing when hope is falling and…other things are starting to go wrong.
The Royal Guard has been disbanded, what with the queen’s mandate that humans falling down should be welcomed as friends. Which is fine, most of them all knew the most recent human as a friend, but…it does leave quite a few dogs and a fish and a few other animals out of a job and consequently, out of a driving purpose in their lives.
A handful of monsters have also gone missing. Not Fallen Down, or moved away, just…gone, without a word or a call or a note. No one really knows what happened, though there’s theories, nobody seems to know anything for sure and the unsubstantiated rumors, ranging from wild to tame, are a little bit scary.
And…the Underground’s resources are dwindling. They have been for a long time, but some of those monsters that disappeared—farmers, couriers, suppliers—their absence has unbalanced the food supply chain just a little more, and what they do have is taking longer to get to the populated areas, costing more, creating uncertainty.
In essence, monsters are getting nervous and losing hope.
Many of these problems have no clear solution, but Toriel tasks the Royal Scientist to one it might be possible for her to solve: the food issue.
After all, it may only be a mild concern now, but with the human souls gone, with how long it took to gather so many to begin with, how unlikely it is for more humans to fall down anytime soon—and to be treated as guests, even if they do fall…
It’s going to be quite some time before monsterkind has any real chance to be free.
They need to survive.
They need to be able to weather the long winter that’s to come, to remain strong and keep from falling to despair.
Certainty that they won’t starve to death in subterranean ignominy is a solid step towards that.
Alphys, happy to have been kept on after her last boss…uh. Well, she throws herself into the assignment, feeling that this is her chance to really do something great, worthy of her title.
The way she sees it, they need some kind of a staple crop, something they can produce in excess without exhausting their resources in the process.
She sets her eyes on the echo flower.
Echo flowers are hardy plants and grow well in any dark environment, in all but the driest of soils, already proliferating wildly in the Underground without any influence and thriving for a long, long, long time. Their petals have been known to make a soothing tea, but the root of the plant—a thick black rhizome—is edible, too.
It hasn’t been actually eaten very much, historically, being that the taste is…not great, a little sour and a lot bitter, no matter how you prepare it.
But it is edible, full of nutrients and ambient magic to keep a monster fed and healthy so long as you don’t mind the taste.
And…can they really afford to mind the taste, at this stage?
Toriel agrees with Alphys’ assessment. The artificial light cycles that simulate day and night are ceased and echo flowers are planted anywhere and everywhere they’ll take, roots harvested and incorporated into monsters’ diets. At first, the farming is only to supplement the scarcity of other foods, but as time goes by and most of those all but disappear, the root eventually begins replacing them almost entirely.
It takes awhile for anyone to notice the changes.
Before necessity, no monster ate or even used enough echo flower root to realize that it had preservative properties.
When monsters begin to notice they’re not aging nearly as fast as they should be, a whole host of other side-effects have started to make themselves known, all dutifully assessed and catalogued by Alphys.
Monsters who consume the echo flower root consistently, at volume, can expect to see many of the following changes in their bodies:
Light sensitivity
Darkening of the extremities
Extended periods of low activity (similar to hibernation)
Lack of appetite
Bioluminescence
Reduced metabolism
Sharpening of preexisting teeth, or growth of new ones
Heightened senses (predominantly hearing sight, and smell)
Decreased sensitivity to touch
Increased physical durability
Thorn-like growths or protrusions
Mental changes and personality drift
In addition to these is something monsters colloquially start to refer to as The Withering, when bodies begin to look thin, gnarled and frail but with no attached physical ailments.
The monsters so afflicted by their new condition…
Accept it.
There’s little else they can do, as reliant on their new food source as they are by this point, and quite frankly, none of the changes seem all that bad.
They have food, they have each other, and most importantly, they have time.
It’s all a little different, of course, but monsters are nothing if not adaptable, every bit the survivors the Queen knew they could be.
The worst thing to come out of it all is that brightness of Hotland and New Home poses a bit of discomfort to most of those who’d settled there, but Toriel oversees a mass migration back to Home and renovation of the Ruins there to make them a far more pleasant place to live.
And naturally, along the way are Waterfall, blissfully dark, and Snowdin, delightfully cold—both equally appealing neighborhoods to move into, with monsters’ new taste for such things.
Life goes on for monsterkind, still trapped in their deep cavern but now…kind of thriving in it.
The next human to fall will be faced with a very different sort of Underground than the one the last human left, darker and colder to be sure, filled with monsters who want to be their friend but are maybe…a little rusty at it.
But there should be plenty of time for them to get used to it.
Kohl (Descendtale Sans)
Not so friendly with regards to humans, these days. He knows for a fact what that last one did to a handful of innocent monsters, and has a pretty strong hunch that they could’ve undone it, or at least come back to free their so-called ‘friends’ after the dust settled…but they didn’t. Despite everything, they were no better than any other human who touched the lives of monsters, and he’s all out of belief and hope and second chances for any of their ilk
Something of a new lease on life, or at least a stubborn determination to live, in spite of monsters’ most likely fate after their abandonment—the influence of the echo flower root has made a lot of his favorite creature-comfort-type experiences (eating, sleeping, savoring warmth) more difficult to enjoy, but he refuses to let that stop him
A slight mean-streak, fond of creeping up on people, unnerving them, enjoying a bit of schadenfreude now and then… but at the same time very defensive of anyone he considers part of his in-group (monsters only for now)
Mostly drifts around his usual haunts, Grillby’s, his place, his sentry station—even though the Guard isn’t a thing and he’s not technically a sentry anymore. He still likes to keep an eye-socket out, and if a human manages to slip out of the Ruins without being caught, or if they come in the back way, he’d really like to be there to give them a good scare, and remind them that he’s watching
A little chilly, a bit avoidant, and with a tendency to push peoples’ buttons to see what they do (…well, he’s always done that one), he’s not the easiest person to get along with but… Well, there is no ‘but,’ that’s the end of the sentence.
Bram (Descendtale Papyrus)
Very, very, very eager to make new friends—yes, even human ones! He befriended the last one, but…maybe he didn’t do it right, because…they left…and never came back…and if his brother is to be believed, they may have also murdered a few monsters before that… That’s probably not his fault. But he can do better! He can be a great friend! The best friend, he just needs another chance!
In the process of reinventing himself, just a bit. With the Royal Guard disbanded, that dream is dead, but the Great Papyrus doesn’t need a dream to be great! He’s working on himself right now, trying new hobbies, exploring new styles, reaching out…reaching out a lot, it’s…it’s very hard to get a call back these days, with everything going on…
Some difficulty with emotional regulation, he can go from feeling not much of anything at all, to feeling one emotion very strongly, which can lead to embarrassing outbursts from time to time. He's managing it, or trying to!
Still patrols around Snowdin regularly, even though he’s not a sentry anymore. He likes to see everyone—all the new and old faces—and it wouldn’t do to leave all his traps and puzzles to fall into disrepair, not when he has so many ideas for how to make them more difficult, challenging enough that even the craftiest human might really need to think on
A little bit scattered, a pinch forgetful, and somewhat prone to saying vaguely unsettling things without realizing they are unsettling (…well, he’s always done that one), but mostly he’s harmless! Just seeking a bit of earnest connection and people to have in his life that won’t leave
