We didn’t buy from Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香) this year, instead sis made use of her NTUC Linkpoints to redeem one piece of White Lotus with Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干白莲月饼) for free. They are selling this single piece of mooncake without egg yolk for a shocking price of $25.50!!! The baked mooncake is filled with velvety smooth white lotus paste, crunchy melon seeds, and delectable bits of Gourmet Bakkwa. Somehow, I still preferred their Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干月饼) which is filled with melon seeds, nuts and bakkwa but no lotus seed paste.

InterContinental Singapore’s Man Fu Yuan (满福苑) unveils four innovative snow skin mooncakes, featuring citrusy and tropical flavours with vibrant hues, alongside a series of low sugar variations of their beloved baked mooncakes. The exclusive Snow Skin Mooncakes: Blossom and Botany (芬芳馥郁) are inspired by the vibrant hues and exquisite flavours of tropical fruits; the innovative creations promise an enchanting experience for the senses; all delicately paired with a chocolate truffle centre. Choose from Mangosteen and Flax Seeds with Pomegranate Chocolate Truffle (红紫山竹亚麻籽伴石榴松露球冰皮月饼), Coconut and Black Sesame Seeds with Passionfruit Chocolate Truffle (雪白椰子黑芝麻伴百香果冰皮月饼), Jackfruit and Quinoa with Lime Chocolate Truffle (青绿 菠萝蜜藜麦伴香柠檬松露球冰皮月饼) or Golden Peach and Pumpkin Seed with Lychee Chocolate Truffle (辉煌黄金桃南瓜籽伴荔枝松露球冰皮月饼).

For those who do not like their mooncakes too sweet, Man Fu Yuan (满福苑) is proud to introduce low sugar variants of their baked mooncakes, retaining the authentic flavours of the beloved classics while offering a more health-conscious option for the festive indulgent. Received this Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk (低糖双黄白莲蓉月饼) from one of our office’s suppliers. The mooncakes came in a Blush Elegance Leatherette Box featuring a delicate blush pink exterior with a sophisticated soft grey interior complemented with coral packaging that hold individual mooncakes, while Ivory Opulence Leatherette Box showcases a pristine ivory finish with a striking red interior that complements the radiant gold packaging.

Finally sliced up this Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk (低糖双黄白莲蓉月饼). Without knowing the yolks placement within, I just blindly sliced it into quarters. As the knife reached the bottom of the mooncake, I can see the orange-coloured oil from the salted egg yolk staining the kitchen towel. A sign that the yolk is properly prepared and not dried out. The glistening yolks are a uniform orange and the lotus paste smooth looking with a thin crust around it. The lotus paste is smooth and velvety with gentle sweetness while the lightly salty yolk crumbled and melted away in the mouth. Overall, it is a nice snack to pair with my cup of less sweet milk tea.

Still deciding on #mooncakes? @AtasPalate has a very unique Eclipsé handcrafted #mooncake box with equally interesting content. In the 2-pc box, classic lotus paste with salted egg is matched with very CNY-esque Onglai Pineapple mooncake (look at that textured filling!), and the super shiok @CenturyBakkwa 😍 Order yours: https://ataspalate.cococart.co/ #FindNewFood #bakkwa #midautumn2022 #midautumn (at Singapore / Singapura / 新加坡 / சிங்கப்பூர்) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiDDvjaLWhX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Once more, with the Mid-Autumn Festival coming up, it’s at the long last opportunity to start stocking up on your #1 Chinese baked desserts. Peruse on for our suggestions for the best traditional mooncakes in Singapore this Mid-Autumn!
For What Reason Do We Eat Mooncakes During Mid-Autumn?
Try not to misunderstand us – we love a good mooncake. But have you ever wondered why we dive into these indulgent treats each September or so? Beginning from ancient China, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated every year on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.
Tumblr media
The celebration respects the Chinese goddess of the moon Chang’e, and serves as an event for families to celebrate the end of the autumn season. The tradition of eating mooncakes began as an approach to thanksgiving for a full harvest. The roundness of traditional mooncakes represents the gathering of families as well as the full moon. When people give mooncakes to each other, it is an approach to blessing them with a long and happy life!
Tumblr media
While we don’t have the four seasons in Singapore, Mid-Autumn actually serves as an opportunity for family get-togethers. Furthermore, we can’t think of a better way to do it than feasting probably the best prepared baked traditional mooncakes in Singapore!
What Is the Most Traditional Mooncake?
In Singapore, traditional mooncakes generally refer to Cantonese-style baked mooncakes. These mooncakes are described by its brilliant, glossy crust that comes stamped with an intricate pattern consisting of Chinese characters. The most widely recognized filling for baked mooncakes by far is a sweet lotus seed paste. Lotus paste baked mooncakes normally also feature a core of salted egg yolk to represent the full moon. The outcome? An incredibly delicious sweet-flavorful baked good that appeals to both the young and old!
Apart from the lotus paste baked mooncake, another best-cherished traditional mooncake in Singapore is the blended nuts mooncake. Otherwise called wu ren yue bing, the best blended nuts mooncakes in Singapore are made from various types of nuts and dry fruits, for example, pecan bits, almonds, sesame seeds, melon seeds, hawthorn, and red beans. The various ingredients make for an especially unique eating experience, where no two bites yield the same flavor or texture!

Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) may be over a few days ago but I still have my stash of mooncakes to last me for at least a week or so. Paired the savoury sweet Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干月饼) with a cup of less sugar Milk Tea for snack this morning. :D

We didn’t plan on buying mooncakes from Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香) as their retail price for the bakkwa mooncakes had gone up by S$10 from last year and the staff’s discount is a little lacking at 20%. But sister’s company is dangling a delicious 40% off the S$100 box for a limited time so we just couldn’t pass up the purchase. :D
Tumblr media
The mooncakes came in an auspicious Red and Gold Box which can double as a reusable storage for small items. Each of the four baked dessert is individually vacuum sealed for freshness.

The Signature Bakkwa Mooncakes (肉干月饼) is filled with melon seeds and nuts like almond, sesame, cashew nut, walnut and winter melon seed with the addition of their gourmet bakkwa (肉干). It offered multilayers of textures from the different nuts and bits of smoky barbecue pork while being savoury sweet in flavours. Normally paired with Chinese tea but I only have less sweet milk tea to go with it.

Saw the advertisement of Bee Cheng Hiang’s (美珍香) bakkwa mooncakes on television. The unique mix of nuts and barbeque pork sounded yummy except for its S$80 (4Pcs/Box) price tag and there is also no credit card discount promotion either. Lucky for us, my sister’s friend had a niece who is working at one of the branch and using her staff’s discount we got it at 20% off.

This baked Signature Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干月饼) departs from the traditional mooncake’s filling as it does not use lotus seed paste. Instead it is chocked full with crunchy nuts and seeds such as almond, cashew nut, walnut, sesame and winter melon seed plus a lot of chewy and savoury bakkwa bits. Overall this is a refreshing nutty change from the classic flavours with the inclusion of bakkwa in a traditional snack that the company is famous for. If you are adventurous enough, there is also a mala (spicy) version of the mooncake (above picture).

For those who fancy Ham and Nuts Mooncake (五仁月饼) which is mooncake with Chinese ham (京华火腿) and assorted nuts. Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香) tossed out the ham and replaced it with their own bakkwa but kept the nuts in. Their Signature Bakkwa Mooncake (肉干月饼) is baked with melon seeds, assorted nuts, orange skin peels and bits of gourmet bakkwa. The result, a crunchy and nutty filling with smoky hints of barbecued sweet pork. This indulgement will set you back S$90 for a box of 4s, up S$10 from last year. Thankfully, we got a 20% staff discount to cushion the inflation but still a lot of money to pay for the once a year treat.
