Flowers of Mythology - Anemone
cw: incest, rape
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anemone is a flowering plant related to buttercups and commonly called windflowers as the Greek name means 'daughter of the wind'. They can be found in temperate and subtropical areas except in Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. They are perennial plants that can be almost any color.

Adonis was a mortal who was a lover to both Aphrodite and Persephone. He was also considered the ideal of male beauty. The myth, though, seems to have roots in the Canaanite myth of Inanna (Ishtar) and Dumuzid (Tammuz). This myth was mentioned in the Hebrew Bible when King Manasseh introduces the cult into the Kingdom of Judah. Further support of this is that Adonis Ἄδωνις is related to the word Adonai אֲדֹנָי through the Canaanite 𐤀𐤃𐤍, which means 'lord'. Sappho of Lesbos mentions that '[w]omen sit by the gate weeping for Tammuz, or they offer incense to Baal on roof-tops and plant pleasant plants. These are the very features of the Adonis legend: which is celebrated on flat roof-tops on which sherds sown with quickly germinating green salading are placed, Adonis gardens … the climax is loud lamentation for the dead god.'

Exactly when Adonis worship entered Greece isn't certain, but it did offer the women of Greece, who generally had a circumscribed life, a time to express unbridled emotion. The festival was celebrated by the time of Sappho and included women planting a garden of Adonis consisting of quick growing plants in midsummer, a time when they wouldn't survive. These would then be put out in the heat of the summer sun, allowing the plants to sprout and then wither and die. While waiting for the plants to sprout and die, they would burn incense to him. When the plants withered, women would go into mourning, 'tearing their clothes and beating their breasts in a public display of grief'. They would then place a small statue of Adonis along with the wilted plants on a bier to be carried to the sea as a funeral procession.

Roman poet Ovid retold the story of Adonis in his Metamorphoses. In it, Adonis is the son of Myrrha. Myrrha was cursed with an insatiable lust for her father by Aphrodite after her mother claimed that Myrrha was more beautiful than Aphrodite. Myrrha confesses to her nurse that she lusts after her father, the king of Cyprus. During the festival of Demeter sometime later, the nurse finds the king exceedingly drunk with the queen no where around. She tells him about a girl who really wants to have sex with him. The king asks the nurse to bring the girl around and she brings Myrrha to her father. They have sex multiple times, resulting in Myrrha becoming pregnant, before the king realizes that Myrrha was his daughter. He draws his sword and drives her out. Myrrha becomes a myrrh tree and still manages to give birth to Adonis. This reflects the Roman and Greek belief that women were unable to control their primal needs and passions than men.

Adonis was found by Aphrodite. She took him to the underworld for Persephone to foster and came back when he was grown and found him exceedingly handsome, as did Persephone. They both wanted to keep him and Zeus came down to settle the argument by saying that each of the three would have would have their desire for a third of the year. Adonis chose Aphrodite. Another version version says the goddesses have him for half the year apiece. In the version told by satirical author Lucian, Aphrodite complains to Selene, the moon goddess, that Eros made Persephone fall in love with Adonis and she now has to share. Adonis has been romantically linked to Apollo, Heracles, and Dionysus, being described as 'androgynous' in a way that meant he could be a 'man' for goddesses like Aphrodite and as a 'woman' for the gods.

One day, while Adonis is hunting, he was wounded by a wild boar that was spent either by a jealous Ares, a vengeful Artemis, or an also vengeful Apollo, all for acts of Aphrodite. Aphrodite mourns Adonis and causes the anemone flower to bloom where his blood fell and declared the festival on his death.
There is another version that originates in Cyprus where Hera orders Athena to cause Adonis to fall in love with Erinoma, a mortal girl favored by Artemis and Athena. She rejects him and he creeps up on her in her room and rapes her. He then went to hide in a cave from Zeus, who also loved Erinoma. Hermes lured Adonis out of the cave and Ares killed him in the form of a boar. Aphrodite begged Zeus to resurrect Adonis and he does. Erinoma gave birth to a son named Taleus.

Tammuz x Adonis
“The worship of Adonis was practised by the Semitic peoples of Babylonia and Syria, and the Greeks borrowed it from them as early as the seventh century before Christ…. The true name of the deity was Tammuz: the appellation of Adonis is merely the Semitic Adon, ‘lord,’ a title of honour by which his worshippers addressed him. In the Hebrew text of the Old Testament the same name Adonai, originally perhaps Adoni, ‘my lord,’ is often applied to Jehovah. But the Greeks through a misunderstanding converted the title of honour into a proper name….
“In the religious literature of Babylonia Tammuz appears as the youthful spouse or lover of Ishtar, the great mother goddess, the embodiment of the reproductive energies of nature. The references to their connexion with each other in myth and ritual are both fragmentary and obscure, but we gather from them that every year Tammuz was believed to die, passing away from the cheerful earth to the gloomy subterranean world, and that every year his divine mistress journeyed in quest of him ‘to the land from which there is no returning, to the house of darkness, where dust lies on door and bolt.’ During her absence the passion of love ceased to operate: men and beasts alike forgot to reproduce their kinds: all life was threatened with extinction….

“Laments for the departed Tammuz are contained in several Babylonian hymns, which liken him to plants that quickly fade…. His death appears to have been annually mourned, to the shrill music of flutes, by men and women about midsummer in the month named after him, the month of Tammuz. The dirges were seemingly chanted over an effigy of the dead god, which was washed with pure water, anointed with oil, and clad in a red robe, while the fumes of incense rose into the air, as if to stir his dormant senses by their pungent fragrance and wake him from the sleep of death….

The biblical prophet Ezekiel witnesses mourners for the death of Tammuz outside the Temple gates in this 1866 engraving by Gustave Doré.
(Source: Gustave Doré, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons)
“The tragical story and the melancholy rites of Adonis are better known to us from the descriptions of Greek writers than from the fragments of Babylonian literature or the brief reference of the prophet Ezekiel, who saw the women of Jerusalem weeping for Tammuz at the north gate of the temple. Mirrored in the glass of Greek mythology, the oriental deity appears as a comely youth beloved by Aphrodite. In his infancy the goddess hid him in a chest, which she gave in charge to Persephone, queen of the nether world. But when Persephone opened the chest and beheld the beauty of the babe, she refused to give him back to Aphrodite, though the goddess of love went down herself to hell to ransom her dear one from the power of the grave. The dispute between the two goddesses of love and death was settled by Zeus, who decreed that Adonis should abide with Persephone in the under world for one part of the year, and with Aphrodite in the upper world for another part. At last the fair youth was killed in hunting by a wild boar, or by the jealous Ares, who turned himself into the likeness of a boar in order to compass the death of his rival. Bitterly did Aphrodite lament her loved and lost Adonis….”

Traveling to Mesopotamia I also decided to explore the Marriage Market. The Babylonian marriage market was very famous, during this time men and women could not simply just get married. They had to write up a legal document and get it approved, then they would have to hold a wedding ceremony which included a big feast or else it wasn't legitimate. According to the article I read this also included five stages of which needed to be done in order to get officially married which included, marriage contract, the dowry, the feast, the bride moving into the father in laws house, and then consummate the marriage. If any of the steps were not performed the marriage contract could be broken, or the bride returned to her family. The marriage market was also a place were many couples were at writing up their contract, and also witnesses to legitimize the marriage as a whole. The artifact I have chosen is called " Marriage of Inanna and Dumzi," this represents the Goddess and the King who married. Which is symbolic of how marriage worked during this time because the Highest bidder would get whatever woman he wanted. This couple being a high class couple shows how valuable some women were compared to others. A very important aspect to marriage during this time was the conceiving of a child, and if the woman didn't get pregnant during their first time she could be returned home and the contract could be broken. Another important aspect during this time was Divorce, which didn't happen very often but if it did for reasons of women having affairs she could be killed. This was up to the husband if she stayed alive or not. If you were caught having an affair as a woman you were most likely sentenced to death. Although marriages were very contract based during this time many poems, and writings were found of Men writing about the deep love and admiration they felt.

Headcanons for public holidays in Jedha based on Malaysia 🇲🇾 (Part 1)
I imagined that Jedha City will not only be home to pilgrims and seekers of the Force, but also immigrants who come from a wide variety of systems and brought in their own religions and holidays from their planet to the Holy City, that every month there's at least two separate festivities going on.
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I'm writing from the perspective of a Malaysian Chinese, so you may see that I heavily lean into holidays from the Chinese lunar calendar and there's bound to be something that I'll miss out. If there's anything you think I should add on, please let me know.
The first month
Outside of the celebration of the New Year, Thaipusam is observed by thousands of devotees who gather at a large cave temple outside the Holy City with a 42m high golden statue at the entrance and a flight of 272 steps leading to the temple itself and held long processions that lasted for the whole day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second month
The night before 春节 Spring Festival starts, families will return to their kampung (home village or district) to visit their parents/elders and have a Reunion Dinner. A lot of lion dances and firecrackers as well. Fifteen days later, Lantern Festival is on and people would carry paper tanglung on the streets and release sky lanterns at night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The third month
On the 12th, the birthday of the revered Prophet Muhammad is observed and had been declared as a public holiday in Jedha.
Tumblr media
[I'm so sorry, I couldn't find any other relevant pics that show the observance of Prophet Muhammad's birthday. :( ]
The fourth month
Either on the 4th, 5th or 6th depending on the seasonal cycle, there's Tomb-Sweeping Day where people will head to cemeteries to pay respect to deceased members of the family by bringing offerings and burning incense as well as clean up their tombs.
